First, let's talk about the haunted activity of Atchison. This town is located an hour northwest of Kansas City, Missouri/Kansas. It has been an attraction for paranormal hunters, brave tourists, and ghost-hunting extraordinaires. Since westward migration in the latter part of the 1800s, the town was a center for transportation and became a railroad hub.

Since the inception of these stately homes in the 19th century, bizarre happenings have occurred, and Atchison has been known for its ghostly sightings and paranormal stories. The town thrives on its seasonal haunted events, especially during the fall season. The most famous in this haunted heartland is the heartland ghost herself: the ghost of Sallie House.

The Sallie House Haunting

The most famous haunted house of all is Sallie's House, where people pay to visit for the day, and the most daring of the guests even stay overnight. The home belonged to Atchison physician Dr. Charles Finney, who had his office downstairs and his house upstairs.

One day, the story goes that a fearful mother knocked on Charles Finney's door about her 6-year-old daughter named Sallie, who was suffering severe abdominal pain. After arriving at the family's new home, the doctor quickly diagnosed Sallie with appendicitis.

Frantic that the organ would not be removed in time for the girl to live, the doctor began the surgery before the anesthesia was fully working. Her screams immediately ceased, and the girl died on the operating table. This true story has since gripped visitors and residents alike. It brings hundreds of interested people to Atchison every year to see the heartbreaking ghost story for themselves.

Sallie's House hauntings took hold of the public when a young couple (Tony and Debra Pickman) rented the home in 1993. Their dog seemed to growl at seamlessly nothing, but things began to quickly take a turn for the worse.

Gruesome attacks on the husband started, fires broke out randomly, and objects would move when the man came close to them. Tony Pickman had personal attacks against him, heard unexplained voices, had burnt finger marks from candles that somehow lit themselves, and felt random cold spots in the house.

Since then, the Kansas Paranormal Group began investigating the unexplained mysteries happening at 508 North Second Street. The paranormal investigators discovered that Sallie was not the only ghost in the home. Still, there was a middle-aged woman who seemed to be more angry and violent than Sallie.

If you are a first-time seeker of ghost adventures, Sallie House is not for the faint of heart. However, this home has been featured on multiple TV shows and networks, including the Travel Channel, A&E, The Discovery Channel, and the Syfy Channel. YouTube is also rife with amateur paranormal investigations of the Sallie House.

But don't fret if you don't have a television. Sallie House is open to the public for visitors and ghost hunters to discover the home for themselves. There are two ways to visit the Sallie House: self-guided tours and overnight stays. The self-guided tours are one hour long and cost $18/person. If you feel extra brave, you can stay the night at the haunted home starting at $125/person.

All attendees must be 18 years or older. Every guest must sign a waiver in case of personal injury (although nothing serious has happened since the Pickmans lived there in 1993). There's no waiver, however, to become a paranormal witness at the Sallie House!

Sallie House: The History of This Atchison Kansas Haunted House – You Can Tour It!

Sarah Paschall

Updated on November 24, 2019

Featured in almost every paranormal series and documentary in the history of the genre, the Sallie House is considered one of the most (if not the most) haunted house in America. Located in Atchison Kansas – at 508 N. Second Street – the home’s dark, mysterious history has both terrified and fascinated people around the globe. If you’re looking to add a bit of creepy to your day, keep reading as we take an in-depth look at the Sallie home, its reported hauntings, and the history and myths that made this location so famous, or infamous, rather.

The Sallie House

Built in the 1800s, this mid-century home has 3-bedrooms and 2-bathrooms. The 1,200 square foot residence was originally built for Michael Finney and his family, who would live in the home off and on throughout the generations until 1947.

Four members of the Finney family (at different times throughout the years) died of natural causes in the residence. The property had numerous owners after the Finney family, but none would be as memorable as the Pickmans, a young couple who purchased the home in the 90s and began reporting strange, sometimes violent, occurrences in the home that were beyond explanation. In the present day, the home acts as a sort of macabre attraction for those looking for a scare as well as a hub for paranormal investigators looking to catch evidence of spirit activity.

Sallie House Haunting

Almost every form of paranormal activity has reportedly occurred in the Sallie House, which is why it has gained so much media coverage over the last 20+ years. Series such as A Haunting , Most Haunted Town , Unexplained Mysteries , My Ghost Story , Ghost Adventures, and  Sightings have all told the story of the Sallie House Atchison Kansas and the paranormal entities that reportedly inhabit it.

The activity has been so severe at times that some believe the hauntings may be demonic in nature or speculate that the Sallie House could be home to a supernatural portal where spirits can enter as they please. Regardless of what the home harbors behind its walls, one thing many can agree on – there are some very odd things going on in this haunted house Kansas City. People have reported seeing full-bodied apparitions (one being that of a young girl), mysteriously burning candles (some with traces of burnt fingerprints on them), and objects moving in thin air, while others have heard disembodied voices of women, men, and children at night as well as scratching on the walls and the sound of furniture being moved around. There have even been reports of physical attacks and possessions.

Sallie House History

Though the home is referred to in modern times as the Sallie House, there is no factual proof that a young girl named Sally actually lived in the house or died there. There is, however, an endless supply of urban legends surrounding the story of the residence – one of the more famous of them being that Dr. Charles Finney, the owner of the home at the time, was operating his office out of the first floor of the residence and attempted to perform emergency surgery on a little girl (Sallie) which would result in her death.

There are actually two versions of this story – one being that a woman rushed her ailing 6-year-old daughter to the home after the girl complained of severe abdominal pain. When Dr. Charles Finney discovered that the girl’s appendix was on the verge of rupturing, he opted to perform surgery on her at his residence and did not even allow time for the anesthetics to take effect before beginning the procedure. The little girl died on the table.

In another version of events, it is said that Sallie was born as a result of an affair Dr. Finney was having with an African housemaid. When the little girl became ill, the mother brought Sallie to her father, who would not allow for the girl to be taken to a hospital for fear that his extramarital activities would be exposed. Instead, he performed the surgery himself and she died due to the botched procedure.

While it’s true that the tragic story of Sallie could be nothing more than macabre legend, it still doesn’t mean that the Sallie House hasn’t seen its fair share of dark events, since it was discovered in the early 2000s that there was a pentagram drawn on the basement floor of the home as well as evidence of Satanic rituals taking place on the property. There was even a luminol test performed in the home that allegedly highlighted signs of blood spatter in the closet of the master bedroom as well as satanic sigils on the walls. A bloody sweater was also reportedly found in the attic.

The Pickman Family

Tony and Debbie Pickman were a young couple, recently married, and pregnant with their first child when they moved into the home on 508 North 2 nd Street in December of 1992. Happy and hopeful that this would be the perfect dream home to start their family, Tony Pickman and his wife had no idea that they were moving into what would turn out to be their worst nightmare.

The activity seemed to start around a month after the couple moved in and was far milder than what was to come. In the earlier days of their time at the house, the couple only recounts small things occurring, such as lights dimming, cold spots, toys playing on their own, and animals acting strangely.

After the birth of their son, the activity seemed to pick up a bit more, even keeping the baby awake at all hours. In fact, the couple discovered from a neighbor that the nursery lights remained on all throughout the night, even after the Pickmans switched them off so the baby could rest. Strange mold had even begun to form on various household items for unexplained reasons.

At one point, the couple even returned home to find that all of the stuffed animals Debbie had organized in the nursery were on the floor, forming a circle. At one point, after a particularly scary evening, the couple decided to spend the night at a family member’s house, but just as they were leaving, Tony Pickman began feeling a burning pain on his back and it was later discovered that he had sustained 3 mysterious scratches down his back.

Shortly after the attack, the Pickmans sought the help of psychic medium Barbara Connors who visited the home in order to get a better idea of what was taking place there. Her conclusion at the time was that a little girl (Sallie) was inhabiting the home and did much of her haunting to get attention from the family.

Upon Connor’s advice, the couple tried their best to embrace Sallie as a sort of ghostly daughter, but as time passed, the activity and the attacks on Tony continued. In one instance, during their child’s birthday party at the home, a doll even caught ablaze. Finally done with living in constant fear, the Pickmans moved out of the home only 2 years after moving in. In recent years, Debbie Pickman has admitted that she now believes Sallie was not the spirit of a lonely little girl, but rather a demon posing as an innocent child in order to gain the trust of the family.

Tony, Debra, and their children still live in Atchison, according to their Facebook pages.

This is especially recommended for new and aspiring investigators.

Who Owns Sallie House?

This is actually a tricky one since all the information regarding Sallie House seems to be more about its tenants than the owner, but according to the official Sallie House website, Les Smith Jr. has been the actual owner of Sallie House for over 20 years.

Ghost Adventures Sallie House

In the sixth episode of their tenth season, Zak, Aaron, and Nick from the Travel Channel’s popular paranormal series Ghost Adventures investigated the Sallie House with former owners, Tony and Debra Pickman. Some of the strange occurrences that took place during the investigation included Tony Pickman suffering welts on his neck from an unknown source, another guest being scratched on the arm, a guest psychic nearly fainting, the words “scratch Satan pain kept spirits” caught on the Puck device, and a teddy bear rolling on its own.

Sallie House Haunted

It’s impossible to give a Yes or No answer to the validity of spiritual activity in any allegedly haunted location. It really comes down to what you believe – for skeptics, bumps in the night and apparitions may be nothing more than optical illusions and natural sounds within the house, while believers of the paranormal would say its ghosts letting their presence be known. What most can agree on, however, is that there is some pretty compelling evidence that has come from this place. Numerous paranormal investigators have visited the Sallie House in hopes of finding something strange, and they do, more often than not.

If you’re still not convinced by all the evidence, why not book yourself a night at the Sallie House and see if there’s any truth to the stories!

Ghostbloggers: Visiting Atchison’s Sallie House

timtrudell Atchison , Kansas 1

The Sallie House. Mention this to almost anyone around Atchison, Kansas, and you’re likely to get looked in the eyes and asked if you saw anything. Considered one of the most haunted houses in the United States, the house has been featured on ghost hunting shows. Video purports to show toys moving by themselves. Men – not liked by the spirit of Sallie – have allegedly been known to have scratches randomly appear on their backs without warning. Voices have been heard. A radio in the house turns on and off by itself.

Poppycock? Is the house possessed? Maybe it’s a portal to the spiritual world? Paranormal experts believe the house to be haunted. The spirit of Sallie, a young girl, allegedly died in the kitchen. One story basically says a doctor ran his medical practice on the main level of the house, while the family residence was located on the upper floor. One night, Sallie’s mom brought her in for emergency treatment.

The doctor believed he needed to operate immediately. However, before the drugs could take effect, he started the operation. Sallie was awake as the doctor cut into her body. The young girl died a traumatic death, likely from a burst appendix. It’s believed that may be the reason why Sallie haunts the house, and the doctor may be a reason she can be violent toward men.

I’ve seen the Sallie House before, from the outside, on a previous Haunted Atchison trolley tour (during daylight). As part of a hosted trip of Haunted Atchison with other writers, I toured the house with a guide. The five of us – Travel with Sara , the HodgePodge Hippie team and our host/guide – entered the house at 508 N. 2 nd Street. It was dark, as we were taking a late night tour of the Missouri River town. Standing outside, we took photos of the house.

As I looked at my photos later, I noticed a sixth shadow to the far left of the photo. Remember, there were five of us. I figured it was the shadow of our host, but I could see her shadow against the house. This sixth shadow looked like a hand holding on to the corner of the house. A shadow of a tree limb, maybe?

As we entered the house, we were each required to sign a waiver. A waiver? For a house tour? Either this was a gimmick or we were about to get into some serious stuff. Oh, the stereo had been playing as we stood outside. Shortly after entering, it stopped. As we stood in the dining room, we looked around, as I believed we each subconsciously wanted (and didn’t want) to see something. Then, we moved on to the kitchen.

Sallie House history

It was in this room, our host told us, that Sallie fell victim during her operation. The room features a hospital slab and some props for dramatic emphasis. Then, I felt something touch my right ear. It felt like hair falling over my ear. Since I wear my hair short, it wasn’t mine. It also felt like it could have been someone – or something – touching their finger to my ear, too. As my wife can confess, I am very sensitive about people touching my ears. It happened a few times. I mentioned it to the others.

Moving to the basement, Thena from Hodgepodge Hippie may have had the right idea, stopping about halfway down the stairs, with one foot on a step up in case we needed to run. As we “investigated” the basement for spirits, we dubbed ourselves “Ghostbloggers” (patent pending). Matt, Thena’s husband, checked out a hole in one of the walls.

Soon after, Sara heard a noise. I recall hearing something, but it didn’t register. She thought it sounded like a nail being tapped on a metal chair. We all looked at the chair, assuming, I guess, it would move about or maybe hover a few inches above the ground. Nope. However, our guide had an EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) app on her phone. This app has been used by professional ghost hunters. It registers energy in the room and spirits will use that energy to form words.

Message from a spirit?

As we looked at the chair, “Closer” came across the phone. She stepped next to the chair. “Ill” came across. After that, the energy disappeared. As we looked at pictures on our phones, one of our team members noticed the outline of a face on the basement wall. That picture wasn’t on my phone. Very odd. However, we decided it was time to move on upstairs.

As we toured the top floor of the mid-1800s house, Thena’s phone randomly took photos. One was of a bed. Later, that photo was a blur, despite each of us seeing the bed pic.

After we left the house, we discussed what we saw and felt, as we tried to wrap our minds around our first known spiritual experience. Did we see a ghost? Did we actually have a paranormal experience? Can each item be logically explained? Perhaps. Perhaps not. That’s the difficulty of these types of experiences. Some people believe they’re open to the experiences, while others will flat out deny ghosts and paranormal life exist.

Spirits possible?

I left the Sallie House unsure of my beliefs. I wanted to believe what I thought we encountered, but I also hoped it wasn’t possible. I’m not sure why. I recall “dreams” so vivid that I can tell you that my Grandma Trudell sat at the end of my end one night in North Dakota and talked with me about life. Later, when my brother passed away, he visited me on his way to start his journey. He stood, looking like I remember from my childhood, with his wide-brimmed hat, trimmed with Native American art.

I recall my mom telling us about a house she and my dad lived in that was haunted. She said dishes flew out of the cupboard one night. They lived near a train track, so I thought maybe it was vibrations from a train, pushing them out on to the floor. But, she claimed they flew out of the cupboards. I don’t think my parents lived in that house more than a couple of months.

The after-life is truly unknown. We all have our beliefs, and I won’t mock someone for theirs. Did we have spiritual encounters at the Sallie House? I do know one thing: If I wasn’t a believer in the spiritual world before my visit to Atchison, I left closer to being one…and that had nothing to do with the Sallie House. A couple more experiences rocked my core (and I will share those in a later post).

Believe in spirits or not, but you can visit the Sallie House for a self-guided tour ($10 per person) on weekends through the end of October. Group tours can also be arranged. If you’re interested in trying an overnight stay, that can be booked, too (please note: People book a hotel room, too, just in case they don’t make it through the night).

Haunted Houses in Atchison Kansas – Things That Go Bump in the Night

Atchison, Kansas is known as the most haunted town in the United States. I recently visited the town and explored some of the haunted sites. Here's what I found and what you need to know if you're planning to visit Atchison, Kansas. Atchison is a small town on the Missouri River, located about 50 miles west of Kansas City . Here's a rundown of the haunted houses in Atchison, Kansas, what it's like to visit, and what else there is to do in town.

I've never been super into ghost stories. My friend and I decided to stop and explore Atchison as part of a Kansas road trip and since this small town is on the map for all the haunted, spooky things, we decided to go all in and make haunted Atchison the focus of our visit. Aside from the ghost stories, this small, rural town is quaint and picturesque, with stunning Victorian and Gothic homes lining the quiet streets.

The Sallie House

Haunted Atchison Sallie House - Jill Robbins

The Sallie House has been touted as being the most haunted house in the United States. This unassuming-looking home should be at the top of your list of haunted houses in Atchison Kansas. The house was built between 1867 and 1871 by Michael C. Finney.

The house is named after a young girl named Sallie, who is said to be the ghostly presence haunting the residence. According to local lore, Sallie never actually lived in the house but died there after a failed operation for appendicitis. The home once belonged to an Atchison physician who had an office and examining room on the first floor. Sallie's mother brought her six-year-old daughter to the doctor's house and the doctor subsequently diagnosed little Sallie with appendicitis and decided to do emergency surgery on the spot. The doctor allegedly began operating on six-year-old Sallie before the anesthesia took effect, making her last moments before she died on the operating table very traumatic.

The paranormal activity that made the Sallie House famous started in 1993 when Tony Pickman and his wife Debra rented the house and moved in. The young couple was expecting their first child and it wasn't long before they noticed strange and sometimes ominous things happening in the house.

The spirits that haunted the house – there are believed to be more resident ghosts than just little Sallie – physically attacked the husband and set fires in the house. Other paranormal events  and strange phenomena witnessed by the Pickmans and visitors to the house include:

  • Video and investigative equipment that stopped working
  • Batteries that are full immediately and completely draining
  • Moving objects
  • Unexplained scratches or bruises on their bodies during/after visits
  • Physical touches
  • Mysterious coldness
  • Trained guide dogs refuse to enter the nursery

Visiting the Sallie House

Visits to the Sallie House are managed by Visit Atchison. Day tour reservations can be made online. Twenty dollars per person gets you a one-hour, self-guided tour. Visitors who sign up for a tour will receive an email with a door code before their visit. There are signs located throughout the house that give a little bit of the haunted history but the signs only reveal the most basic information, so I recommend reading up on the history of the Sallie House before you go, although if I had read much more than I did, I probably would have declined to visit!

My friend and I did a self-guided tour in August 2023. I'd read a little bit of the  house's history  before going and I was a little underwhelmed by the house's modest appearance. The Sallie House is located in a neighborhood of impressive gothic homes and I expected the “most haunted house in the United States” to have creepier curb appeal. On our drive through Atchison, we observed stately Victorian mansions with towers and Juliet balconies that fit my idea of a haunted house. The Sallie House was ordinary in comparison.

I punched in the code I'd received via email when I made my tour reservation and opened the door. There was an old-school-style pram with a creepy baby doll sitting in the front hallway that made me jump. There was another couple already on the tour and we all laughed at my skittishness.

The house was sparsely decorated in the style of the late 1980s and smelled moldy. We wandered around the first floor for a couple of minutes before heading upstairs.

We briefly looked in all three upstairs bedrooms and didn't touch anything. There are lots of children's toys in the bedroom that used to be the nursery – also rumored to be one of Sallie's favorite hangout spots –  and there are reports of the toys moving around on their own or battery-operated or mechanical toys activating by themselves. My friend said she had a funny feeling in her stomach and said she was ready to leave. I quickly agreed. The house had an unsettling energy, that's the best way I can describe it. I got a feeling of anxiousness on the upper floor, at the top of the stairs, between the nursery and the bedroom next to it, and dismissed it but I was more than willing to leave the house at my friend's suggestion.

Overnight Stays at the Sallie House

Staying overnight at the Sallie House would be a big, fat no for me but if you're truly brave, you can pay to spend the night at the Sallie House. The price is $125 per person with a two-person minimum to stay in the house – if you can last – from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 a.m. The price jumps to $150 per person during haunted season, September and October. The maximum amount of people who can spend the night in the Sallie House at one time is 10. Guests must bring their own sleeping bags and pillows.

There's a long list of things overnight guests are not allowed to do inside the Sallie House, including sleeping on the beds, attempting to “cleanse” the house, using an Ouija Board, or going into the basement.

The McInteer Villa is one of Atchison’s most unique residences and has the outward appearance of a true haunted mansion.  Built in 1889-1890 by John McInteer, an Irish immigrant and pioneer businessman of Atchison, this large, impressive brick residence was constructed at an estimated cost of $14,000.  It's a gorgeous house and can be appreciated solely for its curb appeal, even if you have no interest in going inside.

John McInteer’s first wife, Alice died in the house in 1892.  He married his second wife, Anna Conlon, a widow with three sons, in 1895.  After McInteer died in 1902, Anna continued living in the home until she died in 1916.  During her ownership, the house was home to large numbers of her Conlon relatives, including many children.  From 1916 until about 1925, her brother, Judge Charles J. Conlon, a prominent Atchison lawyer, and his family made it their home.

The McInteer Villa was also a rooming house for 25 years. There have been nine documented deaths inside the McInteer Villa , including one suicide. Reported paranormal activity includes:

  • Lights flickering, figures are seen in the window when no one is inside the house
  • Disembodied footsteps
  • Doors opening on their own
  • The scent of a woman's powdery perfume and cigarettes
  • A feeling of unease on the second floor, as if they were being watched.

One of the creepiest reported phenomena is the rocking chair that one of the residents died in rocking by itself. I have been in the house and saw the rocking chair but it remained still. Overall, I didn't find the McInteer Villa to be all that scary, however, it is styled to appear as haunted as possible. There are skeletons outside – it was summer when I visited and a pair of skeletons wearing kid's pool floaties were lounging on the back patio. There's also an impressive array of macabre-looking wall art, menacing baby dolls, and framed obituaries of people who died in the house. If the house hadn't been styled so intentionally, I'm not sure if it would have had the same dramatic effect.

Daytime self-guided tours can be set up via this website. I couldn't get the online booking to work when I tried to book my tour but the owner, Stephanie Neal, responded promptly to the message I sent via the message form. Day visitors have full access to the house for an hour for $15 per person but may not go into the basement or take part in any serious ghost hunting. That's for the overnight guests.

As with the Sallie House, the truly fearless can spend the night in one of the most haunted houses in Atchison Kansas. The price is $300 per weeknight for up to 10 people and $400 on weekends. There's an extra $25 per person fee for extra guests, with a max of 15 guests per stay.  Guests can sleep  on  the beds but not  in  the beds and must bring their own bedding or a sleeping bag. Serious paranormal investigators may bring their video cameras and other recording and ghost-hunting equipment to see what they can discover. Ordinary folk who just like a little bit of scare are welcome, too.

Haunted or not, there are some gorgeous homes to admire.  The Haunted Trolley Tour  starts and ends at the Santa Fe Depot at 200 S. 10th Street and lasts about an hour. The tour is $10 per person and is not recommended for kids under 6 years. Book quickly – spots go fast.

Stops on the Haunted Trolley Tour include Oak Hill Cemetery, Jackson Park , the Gargoyle Home, and, of course, the Sallie House. Other stops and ghost stories are rotated in and out each year to keep things fresh and exciting. The Gargoyle House is a stunning private residence a few blocks from the Sallie House that has two gargoyles perched atop the roof. It looks like something that belongs on the grounds of Hogwarts and is a truly unique site you don't expect to see in rural Kansas.

The Green Man Theater

220 n 9th st, atchison, ks 66002  .

Green Man Theater Front Sign

The Green Man Theater, formerly a church, is inhabited by a few poltergeists. Image credit: Jill Robbins.

The Green Man Theater is the new kid on the haunted block in Atchison. The Green Man Theater was a church up until a few years ago. According to owner Charles Prokopp, who purchased the church and now runs it as a community theater, he discovered he was sharing the theater with poltergeists during renovations. He claims his tools would unexpectedly disappear while he was working and that he'd find them days later in a completely different place.

For $100 per person, you can spend the night in this 120-year-old haunted church.  The Green Man Theater  allows groups of two to six people. The owner, who lives on-site in the church's basement, prohibits Ouija boards, seances, and any attempt to cleanse the facility of the spirits he is on good terms with. As with Sallie House and McInteer Villa, overnight visitors must bring their own bedding, sleeping bags, air mattresses, etc.

There Are lots of Options for Haunted House Stays in Atchison Kansas

If you plan your adventure out right, you can stay overnight in the Sallie House, the McInteer Villa, and the Green Man Theater in one visit to Atchison, Kansas. If you visit in late September or October, you can snag a spot on the Haunted Trolley Tour, but you have to be on the ball and plan ahead – the trolley tour is very popular and sells out every year.

If you're interested in lesser-known haunts in Atchison, the tour is definitely the place to be. The staff at the visitor's center are also great sources of information on local ghost stories that don't have the same level of following and hype that the more well-known Sallie House has. Visit Atchison also has other  spooky-themed seasonal events , such as “Shocktail” parties and medium readings.

Where to Stay in Atchison Kansas

If you're traveling through the  Midwest  and want to spend the night in Atchison but not at a haunted house? You have options!

There's a centrally located  Holiday Inn Express  and a  Quality Inn  if you're looking for familiar franchises. Atchison also has a sprinkling of B&B and boutique-type hotels.

  • Hotel Eastin
  • Historic Charm Three-Bedroom Vacation Home

On my recent visit, I didn't stay overnight in Atchison. We spent the night in Leavenworth, Kansas, which is about 25 miles northwest of Atchison. If you don't mind a bit of a drive, Leavenworth is a bit of a larger town and has more amenities, restaurants, and choices of hotels. We stayed in the  Leavenworth Local , which used to be a Catholic high school. The rooms were well-appointed and comfy but the touches like the trophy case and gym were still intact and made for a fun, whimsical atmosphere.

Food in Atchison

If you're going to tour haunted houses in Atchison Kansas, you've got to keep up your strength! I recommend coffee or light bites at  The Sunflower Cafe . They serve coffee made from local beans, teas, and a variety of pastries and smoothies. On the day I visited, they had giant cinnamon rolls and some seriously delicious-looking quiche. The Sunflower Cafe also serves cocktails and wine and has a fun selection of gifts.

For a heartier meal, visit  Pete's Steakhouse , which has delicious Greek food as well as steaks, seafood, pasta, and a variety of handhelds and salads. Do not miss the Saganaki flaming cheese appetizer, which is flambeed tableside and served with pita wedges. Everyone you talk to in Atchison will recommend Pete's and there's a reason for that.

Other things to do in Atchison

While Atchison is most well-known for ghost adventures, it is also on the map for being Amelia Earhart's birthplace. Pay a visit to the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum . Visit in July and there's an entire festival dedicated to this aviation pioneer.

If you're looking for other non-ghostly activities, check out the Muchnic Art Gallery or the Evah C. Cray Historical Home . The Cray home is a beautiful old mansion with a gift shop in the adjacent carriage house for gifts and Atchison souvenirs. The Atchison County Historical Society Museum in the Atchison Visitor's Center is also worth a stop. The museum operates by donation only and has books on the town's haunted lore and other souvenirs and locally-made items for sale. And, there's a bar! I've always been a big fan of visitor's centers but this is the first one I've ever seen with its own  Whiskey Depot .

If you have questions about any of the haunted houses in Atchison, Kansas, the Visit Atchison staff is fantastic, well-informed, and fun to talk to. Whether you're looking for haunted mansions and ghosts or simply a fun adventure, don't write these small, rural towns off.

You, our awesome readers, had a few stories to share regarding your experiences with the Sallie House in Kansas, including:

“I have seen the episode on the TV show “A Haunting” about The Sally House; very scary. The storyline is that the owner was a doctor, who had an affair with the African-American housemaid, resulting in the birth of a child: a girl named Sally. When she was around six or seven, she became ill, and it was determined that she needed to have her appendix taken out – but the doctor didn’t want anyone to know about her. So, he refused to take her to the hospital, and she died. Her mother was very angry and attacked the doctor, resulting in her death. The doctor moved away, but Sally and her mother remain, as spirits, in the house. The mother is still grieving her child and is the one who supposedly attacks the visitors, but Sally is a happy ghost and tries to play with the children that move in. No families stay very long due to the vicious attacks (usually to the adult males). I suspect the doctor buried the bodies of Sally and her mother somewhere on the premises, or in the basement.”

“I have been to Sallie house when a friend lived there. The curtains caught on fire in his bedroom.”

“[I’ve] been scratched at the Sallie house.”

“I have been to the Sallie house. Never had anything bad happen to us physically, but have gotten some very interesting photos. Even one of who we believe is Sallie!”

Now it is your turn to sound off: Is Sallie House haunted or is it a silly urban legend?

Boris Pasternak's museum house

Guided tour of Pasternak's museum housein Peredelkino village

Pasternak’s “important achievement both in contemporary lyrical poetry and in the field of the great Russian epic tradition" was honored with a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. For many readers outside Russia, Pasternak is known mainly as the author of the touching historical novel Doctor Zhivago written in 1957. The novel as a whole communicates the haphazard, uncertain and chaotic quality of life caused by the Russian Revolution and the heroic case of quiet humanism demonstrated by a single person.

Pasternak’s translations of Georgian poets favored by Joseph Stalin probably saved his life during the purges of the 1930’s. However, the individualistic Pasternak was not suited to the Soviet artistic climate when art was required to have a clear socialism-inspired agenda and so Russian publishers were unwilling to print Pasternak’s novel. In fact, Doctor Zhivago first appeared in Italy in 1957.

Pasternak won his Nobel Prize the following year. Despite Pasternak politely declining his Nobel Prize quoting: “because of the significance given to this award in the society to which I belong”, the award nevertheless spread his fame well beyond Russia. He ended his life in virtual exile in an artist's community in Peredelkino village. His last poems are devoted to love, to freedom and to reconciliation with God.

Pasternak was rehabilitated posthumously in 1987. In 1988, after being banned for three decades, "Doctor Zhivago" was published in the USSR. In 1989 Pasternak's son accepted his father's Nobel medal in Stockholm.

Pastenak loved his house in Peredelkino, the house and surrounding nature featuring in his poetry. The poet considered the cycle of poems "Peredelkino", which he completed in the spring of 1941, to be his best work. The poet spent the first difficult months of the war in Peredelkino; he completed the novel "Doctor Zhivago" here, wrote the Lara poems and translated Shakespeare and Goethe. It was in this house that he learned he was to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature on October 23rd 1958. He died here on May 30 1960.

The house in Peredelkino only acquired the status of a museum in 1990, thirty years after the poet's death and a century after his birth. The museum has fully preserved the environment and atmosphere of the house where Boris Pasternak lived and worked. The director of the museum is Elena Pasternak, grandaughter of Boris Pasternak.
