Travel Guides

Flagler beach, the everglades, boynton beach, weeki wachee springs, dry tortugas, savannas preserve, map of florida's regions.

Northwest Florida has piney woods and some of the state’s most beautiful beaches. Pensacola, Fort Walton Beach, Destin, Panama City, Panama City Beach, and Apalachicola are well worth your time.

North Central

North Central Florida is rich in history, and abundant outdoors activities balanced with serenity. From the capital city of Tallahassee all the way to Gainesville, enjoy Southern charm.

Northeast Florida has natural wonders, tawny beaches, pioneer history, and big-city attractions in Amelia Island, Jacksonville, and St. Augustine.

Central Florida was practically built with fun in mind, starting with the theme parks of Orlando, Kissimmee and Winter Haven. It’s great for kids and adults of all ages.

Central East

Central East Florida, with Daytona Beach, Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach, is home to the space industry, top-notch birding, verdant parks, and the state’s top surfing.

Central West

Central West Florida offers the big-city lures of Tampa, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg, but is also home to magnificent beaches, wildlife, clear springs, and scenic rivers.

Southeast Florida radiates balmy temperatures, luxury, and Latin and Caribbean flavors. Miami, Fort Lauderdale, the Palm Beaches, and the Keys are for vacations you never outgrow.

Southwest Florida, and the cities of Fort Myers and Naples, spreads a welcoming blanket of sugar-white beaches and tropical warmth for all visitors, a comfortable blend of the classic and cosmopolitan.

FLORIDA CITIES

Select a region below to filter city results.

Places To Go

Floridians and those who visit enjoy a few common luxuries: no matter which florida city or region you're in, you're always within a few hours from the ocean, the winters are generally warm and fresh, and locally caught seafood and homegrown citrus is plentiful.  .

But that doesn't mean all  Florida cities  are alike. Each has its own unique history, identity and story to tell, whether it's a large urban metropolis or a small community built around its strawberry crops or cattle ranches.

Whether you're looking for big-city excitement and entertainment or small-town quiet and curiosities, the  best places to visit in Florida  are the ones tailored to  your  taste.

While  Jacksonville  is the most populated city in the Sunshine State, tourists often overlook its strengths as a vacation spot next to theme park-heavy  Orlando  or the beach-blessed coastal cities. But Jacksonville's parks, museums and historic sites are marvelously laid our and the  Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens  is an amazing attraction for visitors young and old.

There's also  Tampa , enjoying a revitalized downtown that includes some of the city's best restaurants, urban parks, bars and a Riverwalk that attracts joggers, bikers and couples out on a stroll.  Fort Lauderdale  is one of the  best places to visit in Florida  for those wanting a winning combination of beaches, shopping and dining.

For visitors looking for a more quiet  place to visit in Florida  that still offers plenty of activities, cities such as  Cape Coral ,  Gainesville ,  Fort Myers  and  Pensacola   offer the perfect getaway plans. All offer top-notch golf courses, cozy bed and breakfast inns and fabulous restaurants without the traffic of the big  Florida cities .  Palm Bay , the biggest city in the Space Coast area, has some of the state's best nature trails at the Turkey Creek Sanctuary but also has beaches and other attractions for both kids and adults.

Some prefer more off-the-beaten-path towns such as  Dunedin   with its tiny but charming downtown and nearby parks, the historic  St. Augustine  filled with old stone fortresses and museums or quaint  Mount Dora  and its fun shops and restaurants.

Tiny  Weeki Wachee  built its livelihood on its 70-year-old underwater  mermaid show  and its natural springs, and  Arcadia   is known for some of the best antiquing around, all concentrated within a few blocks.

Each  Florida city  has its own collection of  places to visit  and gems to offer, whether its secluded beaches, Spring Training baseball, roadside oddity attractions or award-winning golf courses. Pinpoint your favorites to create the perfect escape.

Planning a trip to the Sunshine State but can’t decide between beaches or theme parks?

Torn between surfing on the  Atlantic Coast   and  fishing   on the  Gulf Coast ? Wondering what there is to do near your secluded, romantic bed and breakfast? Checking out VISIT FLORIDA’S interactive  map of Florida  before you travel is a helpful starting point.

Whether you’re going on a weekend getaway, a spring break jaunt or a summer road trip, you’ll never run out of  things to do in Florida , a state packed with  nature trails ,  parks ,  boating docks ,  roller coaster rides ,  museums  and more.

Many visitors have a starting point in mind – say,  Daytona Beach  or  St. Augustine  – but then get curious about what there is to explore nearby, which is where our  Florida map  comes in handy. Others have a general activity they like to do while traveling, such as  camping  or trying unique  restaurants , and want to know exactly where the best Florida destinations are before booking a ticket or hitting the road. And speaking of roads, a trip from the top of the peninsula to the southernmost point is doable in a day or two. But why rush when you can take time to discover some of Florida’s hidden gems, weird roadside attractions, quirky beach towns, outdoor art festivals and wildlife rescue sanctuaries?

Check out some of the small-town, family-friendly events going on within an hour or two’s drive from  Jacksonville ,  Orlando   or  Miami   using our  map of Florida . Or hit some of the best campsites in north Florida, coolest natural springs in central Florida or most popular outlet malls among true bargain hunters in South Florida.

Browse the  Florida map  and take a detour off of Interstate 4 to check out some odd museums and parks, or break off from I-75 to do some nature hiking or wine tasting. Relax on a front-porch rocking chair and try fresh citrus juices at the Grove House in  Lake Wales  or make a day trip out of a stopover in beautiful  Naples   or the laid back  New Smyrna Beach .

If you’re anywhere near the  Everglades , swing over to Billie Swamp Safari on the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation, where you can learn the history of the Seminole Tribe or sample frog legs or alligator tail at the Swamp Water Café. It’s easy to hunt down some of the lesser known but most memorable Florida destinations by doing a little bit of map-scanning before you travel. Even the best laid plans should leave room for spontaneous adventure.

Our tourist maps

Sonia's tips, Journalist and Ethiopia expert

Éthiopia , often thought of as the cradle of humanity, has much to see: the breathtaking views of the wonderful Simian and Mount Bale National Parks, as well as Lalibela's and Gondar's ancient history promise you an incredible journey. Equally, the country's cuisine and coffee ceremonies should not be missed - two delightful ways to discover this unique country and immerse yourself among the locals. It's worth remembering that few countries combine such a wealth of history, landscapes and biodiversity. From the major places of interest in the north to the unsuspected treasures of the south, a stay in Ethiopia promises to be memorable. Discover our maps to plan your trip in the best possible way.

Éthiopia is without any doubt one of the jewels of the African continent. As interesting as it is magnificent, the country is replete with treasures that delight every visitor. A visit to the capital, Addis Ababa, is a must. The northern region is home to the majority of the country's tourist attractions, including the cities of Lalibela and Gondar as well as the Simien National Park. Equally, don't miss the east of the country where Harar, the country's most beautiful city can be found. In the very south is the pleasant city of Awasa. Exploring the Rift Valley, with its great lakes, national parks, numerous species of wildlife is equally indispensable.

Carte des régions ETHIOPIA

Overview of 5 tourist regions

The capital, addis ababa.

A stopover in Addis Ababa, the country's capital is essential. In fact, you'll probably pass through the city before exploring the rest of the country. The country's economic heart, Addis Ababa also offers a good overview of Ethiopian history and culture. The city is full of churches and museums as beautiful as they interesting. The numerous bars, cafés and restaurants also delight visitors. Ethiopians love to gather around a coffee, and this traditional ceremony should not be missed. Neither should the 'injera', the traditional local dish served with a variety of sauces. And don't forget to watch the traditional dancing, a unique and convivial event.

In the east, it's impossible to ignore Harar, one of the country's most emblematic cities. The fourth holy city of Islam, Harar is wholly apart, contrasting with the rest of the country. With its colourful narrow streets, the city has a unique charm. The ancient fortified city has many historical relics, for which it was awarded UNESCO world heritage status in 2006. Harar also has a particular link with France, as the famous poet Arthur Rimbaud spent his last years there. The French Ministry of Culture has built a house in his honour in this city which was so close to his heart. Close to Harar is Dire Dawa, Ethiopia's second largest city. This city also has close links with France, as it was built by the Imperial Company of Franco-Ethiopian Railways. Many French people lived there until 1974. It's hardly surprising the city has a slightly French feel about it. To the south east is the border with Somalia. Very far from the Ethiopia's principle tourist attractions, the area is mired in political conflict and offers little of interest to the visitor.

The north is probably the most interesting part of the country insofar as the majority of must-see cities are located there. In the very north of the country, in the Tigris region, is Axum, the ancient capital of the Axumite kingdom which includes a number of archaeological and historic remains. In the Amhara region is Simien, one of the country's most beautiful national parks, where you will find numerous endemic species of incredible fauna and breathtaking scenery. For a touch of history, a trip to the cities of Lalibela and Gondar are indispensable. Lalibela houses incredible churches carved into rock faces and Gondar is full of medieval palaces, castles and fortifications. Both are witness to a rich history that the Ethiopian people have preserved. A stopover in Bahar Dar is also necessary in order to see the famous Blue Nile Falls, a timeless place in the heart of the countryside. Finally, the Afar region in the north east is home to one of the country's greatest wonders. In the Danakil Desert is the incredible geological site of Dallol with its hot springs, geysers and impressive sulphur mountains. although this place does attract many visitors, it is nevertheless a dangerous place, notably for political reasons.

The Rift Valley and the South

To the south of the country, on the shores of the lake that shares its name, is Awasa, one of Ethiopia's prettiest towns. At 1,708 metres altitude, this town in the Rift Valley is the perfect weekend getaway for the residents of Addis Ababa. The architecture, slower pace of life and its lake are ideal for getting away from bustling life in the city. This is also the Rift Valley, one of the most emblematic places on the African continent. And for good reason. This geological formation of faults ands rifts stretches over 3,750 miles. It is an area rich in history and aesthetically impressive with its many lakes (Chamo, Abaya, Abijatta) and national parks. Travelling the Rift Valley is a journey back in time. Finally, in the very far south is the Omo Valley, at the heart of which is Mago National Park where desert, savannah and verdant mountains meet. It's an area that is ideal for walking, in a setting that is both surprising and sublime.

To the west are the regions of Benishangul-Gumuz and Gambela. The former is very close to Sudan and the latter is known as one of the poorest areas in Ethiopia, plagued by conflict. Due to the security risks, the very few tourist attractions and difficulty getting around, these are places of little interest to the traveller.

Attractions maps

Culturally and historically speaking, Ethiopia is probably one of Africa's richest countries. A trip to Éthiopia is also a guarantee of spectacular landscapes. If you love walking, you won't be disappointed by Simien National park which shelters numerous endemic species of animal, Mago National Park's surprising mix of deserts, Savannah and verdant mountains, and the Bale mountains with their breathtaking views. For a touch of history, Axum, Gondar and Lalibela are unmissable and classed as UNESCO world heritage sites. With their churches sculpted into the rock face, their historic remains and medieval castles, you could almost be in Europe. Said by some to be the most beautiful city in Ethiopia, the fortified city of Harar is als worth a visit. Walking through its colourful narrow streets is a real pleasure. Finally, the lakes of the Rift Valley will take you back in time to the birthplace of humanity.

Carte des incontournables ETHIOPIA

Routes and distances maps

If Ethiopia is an increasingly developed country, the infrastucture remains impractical for getting around. Between the terrible state of the roads, and the children and animals in the road, you have to be extremely careful. That's why it's highly recommended to hire a driver who knows the roads well. Hiring a car in Éthiopia necessarily includes a driver if you want to leave the capital. It's a recommended service as the driver will act as your guide and translator too. It is advisable to hire a 4x4 given the state of the roads. Buses are the preferred mode of transport for local people. Although they serve most of the big cities, they are infrequent, often overcrowded and journeys are extremely long due to the number of stops. It's a cheap alternative, but not recommended if you want to travel the country. The rail network is not at all well developed despite recent infrastructure projects. This is not a recommended form of transport. Given the distances between cities, flying will save you time. The national Ethiopian Airlines has a good reputation. Prices are reasonable, with return flights costing around 100 dollars. It is worth knowing that flights are cheaper if booked with a local travel agency. Finally, for getting around the cities, Addis Ababa in particular, taxis are clearly the best option. As a tourist, you should always negotiate as there are no fixed prices, and journeys are not metered. In other cities, don't hesitate to climb on board a tuk-tuk , the small blue three-wheelers which go absolutely everywhere. They are a very cheap and useful way to cover short distances.

Road Travel America

Map of Popular 2024 Travel Destinations

On this website our staff reviews some of our favorite road trips and popular travel destinations across North America.

Our travel guides include first-hand experiences, personal recommendations, and original photographs from our trips.

We love traveling around North America, and exploring the many exciting places and destinations that the USA and Canada have to offer. We also enjoy being out on the open roads, like cross-country trips on Route 66 The Mother Road.

From the Beartooth Highway to the Blue Ridge Parkway , from Utah Scenic Byway 12 to the Trans Canada Highway, it is always a fun driving adventure.

Recent trips include driving the Going to the Sun Road in Montana, Trail Ridge Road in Colorado, and the Loneliest Road in America in Nevada .

In 2019 we made a return visit to Victoria BC , one of our favorite destinations in Canada, along with stays in Banff and Lake Louise .

This website also features travel information and reviews on the most popular national parks such as  Great Smoky Mountains National Park and other museums and monuments, such as Mount Rushmore . And be sure to check out our newly published Alaska Travel Guide.

Hopefully our travel experiences will be of interest and benefit to website viewers as they plan their travel itineraries for 2024.

Creating Maps for Tourist Guides

tourist guide maps

Whether it’s a metropolis like New York or the rugged countryside of the remote Highlands of Scotland: travelling to far flung places will always hold an allure for people. To make sure people find their way around these places, publishers produce a staggering amount of tourist guides. And what tourist guide would be complete without comprehensive maps to illustrate routes, points of interest and the like?

In this guide we will show you how to create the perfect tourist guide maps.

What to see on a tourist guide map

Points of interest, or short POIs, are places usually indicated by a marker on a map. In tourism, POIs are vital, as they show tourists where sights, gastronomy or lodgings can be found.

map for tourism

As with any map that should help people find their way around, the base cartography used should at least include the road-network and place-names, allowing people to see at a glance how to get there. Topography, that is hill-shading and the like, is only of minor importance in that regard.

Also, in order to quickly denote what kind of POI it is, signifying its role with the right icon is vital. In order to do this, make sure you use symbols which are commonly recognizable, like an airplane for airports, a burger for a place to eat, or for those more interested in liquid nourishment, a wine-bottle with a glass for places to drink.

tourist guide map

Hiking routes

Many tourist destinations are used by visitors to go out and enjoy nature. For readers to be able to find the best routes for hikes or walks, it is advisable to map out routes. As opposed to the above described maps for POIs, in these kinds of maps the inclusion of topography is most important, so visitors will see at a quick glance, whether they’ll be walking up-hill or along a plane that won’t test their fitness.

Taking advantage of Printmaps

map for tourism

Once our geocoding engine has converted the addresses to their respective coordinates, you can go ahead and change the type of marker, the colour, icon or their size. All POIs will be saved in a separate layer, so once you’ve downloaded your map in Photoshop format, you can open it up and fine-tune the positioning of your POIs.

But wait, there’s more

map for tourism

Using shapes will not only help guide the viewer’s focus to the area you want to show off, but will also remove areas you don’t want to be visible on your map, whatever your reasons may be.

Creating routes with a few clicks

Adding maps with hiking routes is a walk in the park as well. Our route editor not only lets you draw your routes free-hand, it also utilizes a wizard that magnetically snaps to existing roads, allowing you to literally create routes within seconds.

But that’s not all. If you have ever recorded your routes with a GPS-enabled device, you can upload these files – usually in GPX-format – to the editor and they will then be displayed on your map. Another great thing about it: You can upload as many routes as you want – and can fit on your map.

It is what you make of it

Crafting printable maps for publications involves more than just having the right geo-tools; it’s about leveraging your own designs and ideas. With Printmaps, you have complete flexibility, whether it’s choosing the type of cartography or selecting the features to include in your map.

But the customization doesn’t stop there. Once you’ve created and downloaded your map, the possibilities are endless. Want to enhance points of interest with additional details? Add your own logos, graphics, or text? Our maps are delivered in a layered PSD format, allowing you to modify every aspect, right down to individual points of interest.

Why not give our editor a try and discover how you can effortlessly transform your ideas into the perfect map tailored for publication?

Try Printmaps

Our map-editor lets you create printable maps worldwide in no time.

Ratings and Reviews

Extremely useful and detailed timesaver.

The Weekendest has saved me so much time with its detailed train position and arrival time features. Because of this app, I had the information needed to hustle to my train or make a connecting transfer, before a gap in service. The app is easy to use and gives me the info I need to travel quickly and smartly. Five stars, very well deserved!

Best transit app

Saw a posting on reddit about it. Then saw an article in one if the local papers. Im sitting on train now and want to know which stop to transfer at so I downloaded it. This app is best transit app the city has ever seen. Is the M train coming in three minutes or thirty? This app will tell you!

Super helpful for weekend subway travel

MTA has planned weekend and night service and this helped me find an easy way home when Google Maps was telling me to do all sorts of funny business. Saved 15 minutes of walking in the rain!

Over the same time frame, international travel should likewise ramp up to its historical average of nine billion nights. Spending on travel is expected to follow a similar trajectory, with an estimated $8.6 trillion in traveler outlays in 2024, representing roughly 9 percent of this year’s global GDP.

About the authors

This article is a collaborative effort by Caroline Tufft , Margaux Constantin , Matteo Pacca , and Ryan Mann , with Ivan Gladstone and Jasperina de Vries, representing views from McKinsey’s Travel, Logistics & Infrastructure Practice.

There’s no doubt people still love to travel and will continue to seek new experiences in new places. But where will travelers come from, and where will they go? We developed a snapshot of current traveler flows, along with estimates for growth through 2030. For the purposes of this report, we have divided the world into four regions—the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East and Africa.

Our analysis identifies three major themes for industry stakeholders to consider:

  • The bulk of travel spending is close to home. Stakeholders should ensure they capture the full potential of domestic travel before shifting their focus to international travelers. And they should start with international travelers who visit nearby countries—as intraregional trips represent the largest travel segment after domestic trips.
  • Source markets are shifting. Although established source markets continue to anchor global travel, Eastern Europe, India, and Southeast Asia are all becoming fast-growing sources of outbound tourism.
  • The destinations of the future may not be the ones you imagine. Alongside enduring favorites, places that weren’t on many tourists’ maps are finding clever ways to lure international travelers and establish themselves as desirable destinations.

The bulk of travel spending is close to home

International travel might feel more glamorous, but tourism players should not forget that domestic travel still represents the bulk of the market, accounting for 75 percent of global travel spending (Exhibit 1). Domestic travel recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic faster than international travel, as is typical coming out of downturns. And although there has been a recent boom in “revenge travel,” with travelers prioritizing international trips that were delayed by the pandemic, a return to prepandemic norms, in which domestic travel represents 70 percent of spending, is expected by 2030.

The United States is the world’s largest domestic travel market at $1 trillion in annual spending. Sixty-eight percent of all trips that start in the United States remain within its borders. Domestic demand has softened slightly, as American travelers return abroad. 2 Dawit Habtemariam, “Domestic U.S. tourism growth levels off as Americans head overseas,” Skift, August 18, 2023. But tourism players with the right offerings are still thriving: five national parks broke attendance records in 2023 (including Joshua Tree National Park, which capitalized on growing interest from stargazers indulging in “dark sky” tourism 3 Scott McConkey, “5 national parks set attendance records in 2023, and the reasons may surprise you,” Wealth of Geeks, April 16, 2024. ).

China’s $744 billion domestic travel market is currently the world’s second largest. Chinese travelers spent the pandemic learning to appreciate the diversity of experiences on offer within their own country. Even as borders open back up, Chinese travelers are staying close to home. And domestic destinations are benefiting: for example, Changchun (home to the Changchun Ice and Snow Festival) realized 160 percent year-on-year growth in visitors in 2023. 4 Shi Xiaoji, “Why don’t Chinese people like to travel abroad anymore? The global tourism industry has lost 900 billion yuan. What is the situation?,” NetEase, February 12, 2024. In 2024, domestic travel during Lunar New Year exceeded prepandemic levels by 19 percent.

China’s domestic travel market is expected to grow 12 percent annually and overtake the United States’ to become the world’s largest by 2030. Hotel construction reflects this expectation: 30 percent of the global hotel construction pipeline is currently concentrated in China. The pipeline is heavily skewed toward luxury properties, with more than twice as many luxury hotels under construction in China as in the United States.

India, currently the world’s sixth-largest domestic travel market by spending, is another thriving area for domestic travel. With the subcontinent’s growing middle class powering travel spending growth of roughly 9 percent per year, India’s domestic market could overtake Japan’s and Mexico’s to become the world’s fourth largest by 2030. Domestic air passenger traffic in India is projected to double by 2030, 5 Murali Krishnan, “Can India’s airports cope with rapid passenger growth?,” Deutsche Welle, February 7, 2024. boosted in part by a state-subsidized initiative that aims to connect underserved domestic airports. 6 “India is seeing a massive aviation boom,” Economist , November 23, 2023.

When travelers do go abroad, they often stay close to home (Exhibit 2).

Europe and Asia, in particular, demonstrate strong and growing intraregional travel markets.

Recognizing this general trend, stakeholders have been funneling investment toward regional tourism destinations. An Emirati wealth fund, for instance, has announced its intent to invest roughly $35 billion into established hospitality properties and development opportunities in Egypt. 7 Michael Gunn and Mirette Magdy, “UAE’s $35 billion Egypt deal marks Gulf powers’ buying spree,” Bloomberg, April 27, 2024.

Europe has long played host to a high share of intraregional travel. Seventy percent of its travelers’ international trips stay within the region. Europe’s most popular destinations for intraregional travelers are perennial warm-weather favorites—Spain (18 percent), Italy (10 percent), and France (8 percent)—with limited change to these preferences expected between now and 2030.

Despite longer travel distances between Asian countries, Asia’s intraregional travel market is beginning to resemble Europe’s. Intraregional travel currently accounts for about 60 percent of international trips in Asia—a share expected to climb to 64 percent by 2030. As in Europe in past decades, Asian intraregional travel is benefiting from diminishing visa barriers and the development of a low-cost, regional flight network.

Thailand is projected to enjoy continued, growing popularity with Asian travelers. Thailand waived visa requirements for Chinese tourists in 2023 and plans to do the same for Indian tourists starting in 2024. It has aggressively targeted the fast-growing Indian traveler segment, launching more than 50 marketing campaigns directed at Indians over the past decade. The investment may be paying off: Bangkok recently overtook Dubai as the most popular city destination for Indian tourists. 8 “Bangkok overtakes Dubai as top destination for Indians post visa relaxation, reveals Agoda,” PR Newswire, January 18, 2024.

A McKinsey ConsumerWise survey on consumer sentiment, conducted in February 2024, suggests that Chinese travelers are also exhibiting high interest in international travel, with 36 percent of survey respondents indicating that they intend to spend more on international travel in the next three months. 9 Daniel Zipser, “ China brief: Consumers are spending again (outside of China) ,” McKinsey, April 8, 2024. Much of this interest is directed toward regional destinations such as Southeast Asia and Japan, with interest in travel to Europe down from previous years. 10 Guang Chen, Zi Chen, Steve Saxon, and Jackey Yu, “ Outlook for China tourism 2023: Light at the end of the tunnel ,” McKinsey, May 9, 2023.

Given travelers’ preference for proximity, how can tourism stakeholders further capitalize on domestic and intraregional travel demand? Here are a few strategies:

  • Craft offerings that encourage domestic tourists to rediscover local gems. Destinations, hotels, and transportation providers can encourage domestic tourists to integrate lesser-known cultural landmarks into their trips to visit friends and relatives. In France, the upscale hotel chain Relais & Châteaux markets historic properties that lie far from classic tourist sights—such as Château Saint-Jean in rural Auvergne—as a welcome escape from the bustle of Paris. In Mexico, the Pueblos Mágicos program has successfully boosted domestic tourist visits to a set of “magical towns” that showcase Mexican heritage.
  • Fold one-off domestic destinations into fuller itineraries. Route 66 in the United States is a classic road trip pathway, which spurs visits to attractions all along the highway’s length. Tourism stakeholders can collaborate to create similar types of domestic itineraries around the world. For instance, Mexico has expanded on its Pueblos Mágicos concept by branding coordinated visits to multiple villages as “magical routes.” In France, local tourism boards and vineyards have collaborated to promote bucket list “wine routes” around the country.
  • Make crossing borders into neighboring countries seamless. Removing logistical barriers to travel can nudge tourists to upgrade a one-off trip to a single attraction into a bucket list journey across multiple, less-trodden destinations. In Africa, for example, Ethiopian Airlines is facilitating cross-border travel to major regional tourist sites through improved air connectivity. In Asia, Thailand has announced its intent to create a joint visa easing travel among Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Source markets are shifting

The United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, China, and France remain the world’s five largest sources of travelers, in that order. These countries collectively accounted for 38 percent of international travel spending in 2023 and are expected to remain the top five source markets through 2030. But interest in travel is blossoming in other parts of the world—causing a shift in the balance of outbound travel flows (Exhibit 3).

North Americans’ travel spending is projected to hold steady at roughly 3 percent annual growth. US consumers voice growing concerns about inflation, and the most cost-constrained traveler segments are reducing travel, which is affecting ultra-low-cost airlines and budget hotels. Most travelers, however, plan to continue traveling: McKinsey research suggests that American consumers rank international and domestic travel as their highest-priority areas for discretionary spending. Instead of canceling their trips, these consumers are adapting their behavior by traveling during off-peak periods or booking travel further in advance. Travel spending by Europeans paints a slightly rosier picture, with roughly 5 percent projected annual growth. Meanwhile, the projected 12 percent annual growth in Chinese travelers’ spending should anchor substantial increases in travel spending across Northeast Asia.

Alongside these enduring traveler segments, new groups of travelers are emerging. Eastern Europe, India, and Southeast Asia are still comparatively small source markets, but they are developing fast-growing pools of first-time tourists (Exhibit 4).

India’s breakneck GDP growth of 6 percent year over year is bolstering a new generation of travelers, 11 Benjamin Laker, “India will grow to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2027,” Forbes , February 23, 2024. resulting in a projected annual growth in travel spending of 9 percent between now and 2030. Indian air carriers and lodging companies are making substantial investments to meet projected demand. Budget airline IndiGo placed the largest aircraft order in commercial aviation history in 2023, when it pledged to buy 500 Airbus A320 planes 12 Anna Cooban, “Biggest plane deal in history: Airbus clinches massive order from India’s IndiGo,” CNN, June 19, 2023. ; that same week, Air India nearly equaled IndiGo’s order size with purchase agreements for 250 Airbus and 220 Boeing jets. IndiGo later added an order for 30 additional Airbus A350 planes, well suited to serving both domestic and international routes. 13 “Airbus confirms IndiGo's A350 aircraft order,” Economic Times , May 6, 2024. The Indian Hotels Company Limited is ramping up its hotel pipeline, aiming to open two new hotels per month in the near future. International players are not sitting on the sidelines: seven hotel chains are launching new brands in India in 2024, 14 Peden Doma Bhutia, “Indian Hotels expansion plans: 2 new brands launching, 2 hotels opening every month,” Skift, February 2, 2024. including Marriott’s first Moxy- and Tribute-branded hotels in India and entrants from Hilton’s Curio and Tapestry brands. 15 Forum Gandhi, “Check-in frenzy: International hotel giants unleash fresh brands in India’s booming hospitality landscape,” Hindu Businessline , February 13, 2024. Development focus has shifted away from major metropolises such as Mumbai and Delhi and toward fast-developing, smaller cities such as Chandigarh and Hyderabad.

Southeast Asian travel spending is projected to grow at roughly 7 percent per year. Pockets of particularly high growth exist in Cambodia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. To capitalize on this blossoming source market, neighboring countries are rolling out attractive visa arrangements: for example, China has agreed to reciprocal visa waivers for short-term travelers from Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. 16 Julienna Law, “China launches ‘visa-free era’ with Southeast Asia. Will travel retail boom?,” Jing Daily , January 30, 2024.

Travel spending by Eastern Europeans is expected to grow at 7 percent per year until 2030—two percentage points higher than spending by Western Europeans. Areas of especially high growth include the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland, where middle-class travelers are increasingly venturing farther afield. Major tourism players, including the TUI Group, have tapped into these new source markets by offering charter flights to warm-weather destinations such as Egypt. 17 Hildbrandt von Klaus, “TUI develops Czech Republic as a new source market,” FVW, December 22, 2023.

Although the number of travelers from these new source markets is growing, their purchasing power remains relatively limited. Compared with Western European travelers (who average $159 per night in total travel spending), South Asians spend 20 percent less, Eastern Europeans spend 40 percent less, and Southeast Asians spend 55 percent less. Only 3 percent of the current Asian hotel construction pipeline caters to economy travelers, suggesting a potential supply gap of rooms that could appeal to budget-constrained tourists.

While acknowledging that historical source markets will continue to constitute the bulk of travel spending, tourism players can consider actions such as these to capitalize on growing travel demand from newer markets:

  • Reduce obstacles to travel. Countries can look for ways to strategically invest in simplifying travel for visitors from growing source markets. In 2017, for example, Azerbaijan introduced express processing of electronic visas for Indian visitors; annual arrivals from India increased fivefold in two years. Requirements regarding passport photocopies or in-person check-ins can similarly be assessed with an eye toward reducing red tape for travelers.
  • Use culturally relevant marketing channels to reach new demographics. Unique, thoughtful marketing strategies can help destinations place themselves on first-time travelers’ bucket lists. For example, after the release of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara , a popular Bollywood movie shot in Spain with support from the Spanish Ministry of Tourism, Indian tourism to Spain increased by 65 percent. 18 “ Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara part of syllabus in Spain colleges,” India Today , June 6, 2004.
  • Give new travelers the tech they expect. Travelers from newer source markets often have access to tech-forward travel offerings. For example, Indian travelers can travel anywhere within their country without physical identification, thanks to the Digi Yatra app. The Southeast Asian rideshare app Grab has several helpful travel features that competitors lack, such as automated menu translation and currency conversion. Tourism stakeholders should consider how to adapt to the tech expectations of newer travelers, integrating relevant offerings that ease journeys.
  • Create vibrant experiences tailored to different price points. Crafting lower-budget offerings for more cost-constrained travelers doesn’t need to result in giving them a subpar experience. Capsule hotels, in which guests sleep in small cubbies, began as a response to the high cost of accommodations in Japan, but they have become an attraction in their own right—appearing on many must-do lists. 19 Philip Tang, “24 of the best experiences in Japan,” Lonely Planet, March 23, 2024.

The places you’ll go: The destinations of the future may not be the ones you imagine

The world’s top ten destination countries (the United States, Spain, China, France, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Italy, Thailand, Japan, and India, in that order) currently receive 45 percent of all travel spending, including for domestic travel. But some new locales are gaining traction (Exhibit 5).

A significant number of travelers are expanding their horizons, booking journeys to less visited countries that are near to old standbys. For instance, Laos and Malaysia, which both border Thailand—an established destination that is home to Bangkok, the world’s most visited city 20 Katherine LaGrave, “This is the world’s most visited city,” AFAR , January 31, 2024. —are up a respective 20 percent and 17 percent, respectively, in year-over-year international travel spending.

The world’s top ten destination countries currently receive 45 percent of all travel spending, including domestic-travel spending. But some new locales are gaining traction.

Several other countries that have crafted thoughtful tourism demand generation strategies—such as Peru, the Philippines, Rwanda, and Vietnam—are also expected to reap benefits in the coming years. Vietnam logged a remarkable 40 percent increase in tourism spending in the five years before the pandemic. Postpandemic, it has rebounded in part by waiving visa requirements for European travelers (while indicating intent to offer similar exemptions in the future for Chinese and Indian travelers). 21 Ashvita Singh, “Vietnam looks to offer visa-free entry to Indians: India report,” Skift, November 20, 2023. The Philippines has made a concerted effort to shift its sun-and-beach branding toward a more well-rounded image, replacing its long-standing “It’s more fun in the Philippines” tourism slogan with “Love the Philippines.” Peru is highlighting less visited archeological sites while also marketing itself as a top-notch culinary destination through the promotion of Peruvian restaurants abroad. Rwanda is investing in infrastructure to become a major African transit hub, facilitated by Qatar Airways’ purchase of a 60 percent stake in the country’s major airport. 22 Dylan Cresswell, “Rwanda plots ambitious tourism recovery,” African Business , July 28, 2022. Rwanda has also successfully capitalized on sustainable tourism: by charging $1,500 per gorilla trekking permit, for instance, it has maximized revenue while reducing environmental impact.

Tourism players might consider taking some of these actions to lure tourists to less familiar destinations:

  • Collaborate across the tourism ecosystem. Promotion is not solely the domain of destination marketing organizations. Accommodation, transportation, and experience providers can also play important roles. In Singapore, for instance, the luxury resort Marina Bay Sands partners extensively with Singapore Airlines and the Singapore Tourism Board to offer compelling tourism offerings. Past collaborations have included flight and stay packages built around culinary festivals and a Lunar New Year drone show. 23 “Singapore Tourism Board, Marina Bay Sands & UOB partner to enliven Marina Bay precinct,” Singapore Tourism Board news release, January 25, 2024.
  • Use infrastructure linkage to promote new destinations. By extending route options, transportation providers can encourage visitors to create itineraries that combine familiar destinations with new attractions. In Asia, Thailand’s tourism authority has attempted to nudge visitors away from the most heavily trafficked parts of the country, such as Bangkok and Phuket, and toward less popular destinations.
  • Deploy social media to reach different demographics. Innovative social media campaigns can help put a destination on the map. Australia launched its “Ruby the kangaroo” campaign in China to coincide with the return of postpandemic air capacity between the two places. A video adapted for Chinese context (with appropriate gestures and a hashtag in Mandarin) garnered more than 20 million views in a single day on one of China’s largest social media platforms. 24 Nicole Gong, “Can Ruby the kangaroo bring Chinese tourists hopping back to Australia?,” SBS, June 5, 2023.
  • Embrace unknown status. “Off the beaten path” messaging can appeal to widely traveled tourists seeking fresh experiences. Saudi Arabia’s “#WhereInTheWorld” campaign promoted the country’s tourist spots by acknowledging that they are less familiar to travelers, using a series of images that compared these spots with better-known destinations.

As tourism stakeholders look to the future, they can take steps to ensure that they continue to delight existing travelers while also embracing new ones. Domestic and intraregional tourism remain major opportunities—catering to local tourists’ preferences while building infrastructure that makes travel more seamless within a region could help capture them. Creative collaboration among tourism stakeholders can help put lesser-known destinations on the map. Travel tides are shifting. Expertly navigating these currents could yield rich rewards.

Map reveals every country's favourite summer holiday destination

Cicada map 2024: Broods XIII and XIX emerge in Ohio vacationer hotspots

It's not necessarily a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but it doesn't happen often. It's typically more than a decade between times when periodical cicadas emerge in full force in many portions of the country.

They're out now in nearly 20 U.S. states across the Southeast and Midwest.

These 17 states, which range from Oklahoma to Wisconsin to North Carolina and more, are seeing the trillions of cicadas emerging this year in a rare, double brood event.

The two broods this year, the 13-year Brood XIX located mainly in the Southeast and the 17-year Brood XIII in the Midwest, have not emerged together in 221 years and are not expected to do so again until 2245.

Thanks to warm soil temperatures and ideal conditions, cicadas from both broods have already made their way above ground and the emergence is already in full swing.

Here's where you can find cicadas above ground this year.

What do cicadas eat? Lifecycle, diet and biting habits explained

2024 cicada map: Check out where Broods XIII, XIX are projected to emerge

The two cicada broods were projected to emerge in a combined 17 states across the South and Midwest. They emerge once the soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, beginning in many states in April and May and lasting through late June.

The two broods  last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.

Traveling from Ohio or Northern Kentucky this summer? You may see cicadas

Are you an Ohio or Kentucky resident traveling to places like middle Tennessee or western North Carolina? Well then, be on the lookout for cicadas.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, both less than 300 miles from Cincinnati and under 400 miles from Columbus, are Ohio vacationer hotspots where cicadas are above ground this spring.

If you're eyeing a Lake Michigan getaway, you're likely to share the beach with some 17-year cicadas.

New Buffalo in Southwest Michigan, which is less than 300 miles from Columbus and Cincinnati and slightly more than 300 miles from Akron, has cicadas.

Likewise for Indiana Dunes in Northern Indiana — also less than 300 miles from Columbus and Cincinnati and a little over 300 miles from Akron. Northern Illinois, including the Chicago area, are also expected to experience 17-year cicadas this year.

Where are the cicadas in 2024? App developed in Cincinnati tracks sightings

Adult periodical cicadas from Brood XIX are out in full force in states across the Midwest and Southeast, according to  Cicada Safari , a cicada tracking app developed by Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

App users have spotted them in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, southern Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Brood XIII has emerged in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana. The Chicago area and around central and northern Illinois and downstate areas around the cities of Peoria and Champaign are experiencing cicada mania, according to the tracking service.

Does Ohio have cicadas?

Ohio is  not  in the path of the two broods appearing across much of the Southeast and Midwest, according to the University of Connecticut. However, you might still spot either brood this spring as "some stragglers may pop up in the southwest of the state," according to Ohio State University's  Buckeye Environmental Horticulture Team .

Parts of southern and southwest Ohio will see the emergence of Brood XIV cicadas in 2025, per OSU's Buckeye Environmental Horticulture Team.

Confusingly, Brood XIII emerges every 17 years while Brook XIX resurfaces every 13 years, according to the  University of Illinois .

Will cicadas emerging this year fly to Ohio?

Ohio is not expected to see an onslaught of periodical cicadas from either Brood XIX or XIII, but some neighboring states will.

So will the cicadas be able to fly to Ohio? That's unlikely for two reasons.

First, cicadas are clumsy flyers, and their wings are not suitable for long distance travel, according to  Science News Explores .

Plus, periodical cicadas emerge only to molt, breed, lay eggs and die, all within a few weeks. They don't spend time looking for new territory. Cicadas typically fly less than half a mile from the spot where they emerge, according to the University of Illinois. So, 17-year cicadas from Abraham Lincoln's day have spread roughly five miles total.

What is a brood?

According to the  University of Connecticut , broods are classified as "all periodical cicadas of the same life cycle type that emerge in a given year."

A brood of cicadas is made up of different species of the insect that have separate evolutionary histories. These species may have joined the brood at different times or from different sources. These distinct species are lumped together under the brood because they are in the same region and emerge on a common schedule.

How long will the cicadas be above ground?

How long cicadas live depends on their brood and if they are an annual or periodical species.

The two periodical broods this summer are Brood XIX, which has a 13-year life cycle, and Brood XIII, which has a 17-year life cycle.

Once male and female periodical cicadas have mated and the latter has laid its eggs, the insects will die after spending only a few weeks above ground − anywhere from three to six weeks after first emerging.

That means many of this year's periodical cicadas are set to die in June, though some could die off in late May or July, depending on when they emerged.

The nymphs of annual cicadas remain underground for  two to five years , according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. These cicadas are called " annual " because some members of the species emerge as adults each year.

Why do cicadas make so much noise?

You'll have to thank the male cicadas for all that screeching. Male cicadas synchronize their calls and produce congregational songs, according to  Britannica , which establish territory and attract females. There is also a courting call before mating.

The periodical 13-year and 17-year brood cicadas are the loudest, partially because of the sheer number of them that emerge at once.

Claudia Sheinbaum projected to be Mexico's first woman president

By Kathleen Magramo, Maureen Chowdhury, Matt Meyer and Melissa Macaya, CNN

Mexico's expected president Sheinbaum pledges to govern all Mexicans "without distinction"

From CNN's Michael Rios

Claudia Sheinbaum addresses supporters in Mexico City on Monday, June 3.

Claudia Sheinbaum has responded to the announcement of her projected victory in Mexico's presidential election early Monday morning, saying her administration would govern all Mexicans “without distinction,” even though not everyone supports her policies.

“Our duty is and will always be to look after every single Mexican without distinction. So even though many Mexicans do not fully agree with our project, we will have to walk in peace and harmony to continue building a fair and more prosperous Mexico,” she told supporters in a speech.

She also spoke about the historical significance of becoming the first female president of the country.

Sheinbaum said her two rivals in the race, Xóchitl Gálvez and Jorge Álvarez Máynez, had called to congratulate her on her projected victory.

Sheinbaum, the candidate from the ruling party, received the most votes in Sunday's elections, according to preliminary results from the National Electoral Institute.

The Electoral Court must validate the presidential election, and if confirmed, Sheinbaum will start her presidency on October 1.

Sheinbaum's large margin shows power of Mexico's ruling party, CNN journalist says

From CNN's Kathleen Magramo

Ruling party presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum leaves the polling station where she voted during general elections in Mexico City, on June 2.

Even though Claudia Sheinbaum was expected to win during campaign polls, her large margin in the votes came as a shock, CNN’s Gustavo Valdes reports from Mexico City.

Sheinbaum might get up to 60% of the vote, which is even higher than outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador when he was elected six years ago, Valdes said.

Sheinbaum is the candidate for the ruling Morena party.

"That gives you an idea of the political power that López Obrador has amassed over the past six years," Valdes told CNN's Rosemary Church.

Valdes said voters told CNN that a woman president would help change Mexico's image of being a "macho" country, where patriarchal culture impedes women's advancements.

"Mexico has actually changed its laws to encourage and actually force the parties to have more female candidates. So so there's a very equal division of power between many woman in congress and the governorships," Valdes said.

Sheinbaum projected to win Mexico's presidential election, official preliminary results show

From CNN en Español

Claudia Sheinbaum waves to her supporters in Mexico City on June 3.

Claudia Sheinbaum is projected to win Mexico's presidential election and become the first woman to lead the country's government, according to preliminary results reported by the National Electoral Institute (INE).

Sheinbaum, the candidate of Mexico's ruling party Morena, won between 58.3% and 60.7% of the vote, according to INE's quick count, a statistical method that predicts the trend in voting from a random sample of polling stations.

Opposition coalition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez trailed Sheinbaum with between 26.6% and 28.6% of the vote.

The Citizen Movement candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez came in third place with between 9.9% and 10.8%   of the vote.

The Electoral Court must validate the presidential election. If it does, Sheinbaum will start her presidency on October 1.

Key things to know about Claudia Sheinbaum, who is projected to be Mexico's first female president

From CNN Español

Presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum arrives at her closing campaign rally at the Zocalo in Mexico City on May 29.

Claudia Sheinbaum, the former head of the government of Mexico City and candidate for the ruling Morena party , is projected to be the country's first female president.

Sheinbaum, a former climate scientist, entered the campaign as the favorite, according to February and March polls by Mitofsky, Parametría, and De las Heras Demotecnia, which placed her support between 49% and 67% compared to her political rivals.

Sheinbaum holds a degree in physics and a master's and doctorate in energy engineering. She has received several accolades for her academic career.

Born in Mexico City in 1962, she has two children and one grandchild. Her partner, Jesús María Tarriba, whom she met at university while both were studying physics, is currently a financial risk specialist at the Bank of Mexico.

In 2018, she became the head of government of Mexico City, the first woman elected to this position. Her desire to be part of Mexican politics began in 2000 when she was appointed Secretary of the Environment for the Federal District under Andrés López Obrador's administration until 2006.

Claudia Sheinbaum arrives at her closing campaign rally at the Zocalo in Mexico City on May 29.

In 2015, she became the first woman elected as the head of the Tlalpan borough, serving until 2017. In early 2018, she joined the government of Mexico City as head until June 2023, when she stepped down to run for the presidency with the Morena party, of which she is a founder, aiming to succeed her party colleague, López Obrador.

As part of her campaign within Morena, Sheinbaum is designated the coordinator for the Defense of the Transformation, whose mission, as stated on her LinkedIn profile, is to defend and promote the values of the Fourth Transformation of Public Life in Mexico, the central axis of López Obrador's policy.

Much of her life has been dedicated to university teaching, focusing on renewable energy and climate change. In 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), to which Sheinbaum contributed, received the Nobel Peace Prize.

Sheinbaum is not only the first female president in Mexico, but the first president with Jewish heritage, although she rarely speaks publicly about her personal background and has governed as a secular leftist.

Elected president will have to act quickly on crime and security issues, analyst says

Claudia Sheinbaum, presidential candidate of the ruling MORENA party, gives a thumb up after she voted in the general elections, in Mexico City, Mexico June 2.

Frontrunner Claudia Sheinbaum will have to act quickly on Mexico's organized crime and security issues if she wins the presidency, said Will Freeman, a fellow for Latin America studies at the Council on Foreign Relations.

"The biggest challenge facing the country does come from organized crime, the expanding territorial control of cartels and gangs, that will be something Sheinbaum will need to make progress on early," Freeman told CNN's Michael Holmes.

Freeman also said Sheinbaum would inherit a rising fiscal deficit, stemming from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's big spending campaign, as well as long term issues such as migration and climate change.

Sheinbaum is the candidate for the ruling Morena party under López Obrador, and Sunday's election is seen by some as a referendum  on the policies of the outgoing president.

López Obrador's popular social welfare has helped poorer Mexicans but his "hugs, not bullets” policy of not confronting cartels has not stopped criminal violence. Mexico’s  homicide rate  is among the highest in the world, and  more than 100,000 people remain missing in the country.

"It's stunning that the governing party could win re-election by a landslide as it seems... given the sweeping violence, the thing is the opposition didn't seem to put together a much more credible set of proposals about what they would do," Freeman said. "What scares me the most is that it could be that no political figure in Mexico go has a viable plan to reclaim security, to rebuild the state's control over all of its national territory."

Sheinbaum comes with a team from her time as Mexico City mayor that has a proven record on improving security but it remains to be seen if she can replicate that on a national scale, Freeman said.

Election officials postpone press conference on preliminary results

Mexico’s election officials postponed a press conference in which initial preliminary results based on a small percentage of the votes were expected to be announced, CNN’s Gustavo Valdes in Mexico City reports.

Claudia Sheinbaum has emerged as the frontrunner of the presidential vote, and reporters at her campaign headquarters say her team is gearing up for a celebration, Valdes said.

"Thousands of them are already in Zócalo, which is the main square in Mexico City, but there's nothing official," he said.

Mexico awaits confirmation of its first female president. Here's what has happened so far

From CNN staff

Supporters of Claudia Sheinbaum, former mayor of Mexico City and presidential candidate for the Morena party, celebrate during an election night rally at Zocalo Plaza in Mexico City, Mexico, on Sunday.

Mexico is awaiting for results confirming the win of its first female president, which would mark a remarkable achievement in a country known for its patriarchal culture.

The two leading presidential candidates are women: Claudia Sheinbaum from the leftist Morena party and Xochitl Gálvez , from the conservative PAN party, who is representing a coalition of opposition parties. The third candidate is Jorge Álvarez Máynez, who is representing the center-left Citizens’ Movement.

Their respective parties have made early claims of victory, even though official results have not yet been announced by the National Electoral Institute (INE).

Sunday’s election was the largest in the country’s history. Over 98 million voters were registered to cast a ballot in Mexico and more than 20,000 positions are set to be filled.

  • Vote counting: Polls began to close at 6 p.m. local time (8 p.m. ET) and Mexico's National Electoral Institute (INE) opened its preliminary electoral results program (known as PREP) on Sunday night, which is expected to be open for 24 hours. Official results have not yet been announced, though Sheinbaum emerges with an early lead. You can track the latest results here.
  • Security on the ballot: Violence has loomed large in this election, the bloodiest in Mexico’s history. Dozens of political candidates and applicants have been killed by criminal organizations  trying to influence  those coming into power.
  • Immigration concerns: Immigration is also another top concern for voters amid Mexico’s broader security crisis. Mexico is grappling with a surge of migrants and asylum seekers entering and crossing its own territory, while it contends with external policies on migration.
  • US watches closely: Mexico is a key US ally  on a range of issues, from trade to cracking down on drug trafficking to managing migration. US officials are closely monitoring Mexico's election results, as they prepare a border executive action that could be announced  as early as Tuesday.
  • Why Mexico matters: The US and Mexico are both heading to the polls this year, something that happens only once every 12 years – and comes at a time of transition in the relationship between the two countries. The neighboring countries have to cooperate and address issues spanning migration, the fentanyl and drug trade, and their tightening economic relationship.

Track preliminary results of Mexico's presidential election

Mexico's National Electoral Institute (INE) opened its preliminary electoral results program (known as PREP) on Sunday night.

The system captures results from each of the polling locations in the federal elections.

The PREP is updated in real time and is expected to be open for 24 hours, until 10 p.m. ET on Monday.

Earlier on Sunday, an official of the INE said that at some point in the evening they would report results from the "fast count," which is "a procedure to provide citizens with early and accurate information on election results."

Official results have not yet been announced by the the INE.

Here's a look at where things stand with about 25.4% of electoral records captured from the PREP:
