Holly Robinson Peete on ‘The Journey Ahead,’ new beginnings and more

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The actress stars in “The Journey Ahead,” a new film on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries.

Holly Robinson Peete is back with a brand new project on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, and theGrio caught up with the actress to break down the new role, the new beginnings her character Madeline steps into and “evolving as a person.”

Premiering this weekend, Holly Robinson Peete stars in “The Journey Ahead” alongside Kaylee Bryant (“Legacies”) and Mark Humphrey (“E.N.G.”). The film follows Madeline (Peete), an aging Hollywood actress with little to no meaningful personal relationships and is dealing with some seriously bad luck. After receiving word she must travel from LA to NYC for an urgent medical appointment, she hires Sarah (Bryant) to drive her across the country. What unfolds is a story of unconditional friendship as the two women learn about each other, grow closer and lean on each other in their times of need.

TheGrio: I must first reiterate how much I enjoyed the film. I related to Madeline on so many levels throughout the film. In the beginning of Madeline’s journey, she had to make a tough choice that would stick with her for the rest of her life. How do you believe choices affect how we live our lives?

Peete: Choices have a lasting impact on our lives. We don’t often have the wisdom we need at the time to make the perfect choices. But you cannot be defined by those choices even though they do impact your life. I often wish I could go back and make better choices with the wisdom I have at my age now, but that’s not possible!

TheGrio: Madeline is the queen of materialism items! Queen of big purses, big glasses and sky-high stilettos. Do you think deep down Madeline was clear on what really matters, or do you think she was feeding a narrative of a larger-than-life actress?

Peete: Madeline was definitely feeding the narrative of what she needed to have in her life materialistically to fill the void of what she was missing emotionally. The houses in New York, Malibu, Beverly Hills, the purses, etc., all the trappings are things that she kept herself busy with to avoid other issues and emotions she has suppressed her whole life.

TheGrio: Health and wellness are paramount, especially in highly stressful jobs. Why do you think Madeline finally took time away to tend to her health?

Peete: It wasn’t until she got bad news about her health that I believe Madeline really paid attention for the first time to her mortality. Sometimes a health scare is the jolt we need to make us pay more attention to the importance of health because, without it, wealth means nothing!

TheGrio: For so many years, Madeline was putting everybody’s needs before her own—how reflective is this of women across the world? How important is community in these instances, and did Madeline have a true community?

Peete: Women always put themselves in the back of the line…especially mothers. I don’t believe Madeline had real true friends in her community. Her criteria was all the way off as it pertains to why people are important to her. This was part of her journey of discovery with Sara.

TheGrio: We love new beginnings at theGrio—It took a potentially life-changing decision for Madeline to make changes—how do you think her perspective changed once she received favorable news from the New York doctor?

Peete: Like most people, when Madeline got that scare about her health, she realized it was an amazing opportunity to pivot and refocus her life on what really matters. Because Madeline’s life was so charmed and full of material things she believed she could hide the fact that she was deeply unhappy instead of seeking a life with actual substance. I love that she found a new beginning despite the fact that she was resisting it with her whole heart!

TheGrio: Multigenerational conversations were incredibly evident throughout the film; what did Madeline learn from Sarah?

Peete: Madeline learned so much from Sarah. How dare Sarah teach Madeline lessons being half her age! When we get to a certain age, we think we know everything and we don’t think anyone who hasn’t experienced as much life as we have can teach us anything. Working with Kaylee was such a treat. She is wise beyond her years. She is the same age as my daughter and I asked her how I could understand and relate to my daughter better and she said, “try listening to her.” She overheard some of my conversations with my daughter and said I was talking over her and dismissive of her point of view (which, of course, is what my daughter tells me all the time). So I found Kaylee to be helpful to me—Holly–in the same way that Sarah was helpful to Madeline!

TheGrio: There’s a new “journey ahead” for Madeline—what is your wish for her as she begins to put herself first?

Peete: My wish for Madeline is that she establishes relationships that are based on honesty, trust and true friendship. My wish for her is that she releases the guilt that she has carried for so many years as a result of some choices she made at a very young age. Madeline has redefined what happiness means on this journey.

TheGrio: What do you want viewers to take away from Madeline’s story?

Peete: I think viewers will find that there is a lot to take away from Madeline‘s journey in “The Journey Ahead!” Definitely one takeaway is the importance of being open to evolving as a person. Our journeys don’t end because we become a certain age or because a career ends. In many ways, that’s just the beginning! Continue on your journey!

“The Journey Ahead” premieres Sunday, Aug. 14 (9 p.m. ET/PT), on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries.

of Where Was Hallmark’s The Journey Ahead Filmed? Who is in the Cast?

Directed by Linda-Lisa Hayter, ‘The Journey Ahead’ is a Hallmark road-trip movie that revolves around Madeline, a famous actress, and a wilderness expert named Sarah. When her travel plan to New York from Los Angeles falls through, the former enlists the help of her assistant’s best friend, Sarah, to reach the Big Apple within 12 days. As both women of two different generations embark on their cross-country trip, they learn valuable lessons from each other.

The movie tells a heartwarming story of how people can learn from one another despite their differences and overcome their problems. Apart from its talented cast, ‘The Journey Ahead’ captivates the viewers with eye-catching visuals. Given the movie’s premise, it introduces the audience to various backdrops that help accurately convey the story. Now, if you are interested to know just where the Hallmark movie was lensed, here’s all the information you need!

The Journey Ahead Filming Locations

‘The Journey Ahead’ was primarily filmed in British Columbia, mainly in and around Vancouver, Squamish. The movie’s principal photography commenced under the title ‘The Road Ahead’ in April 2022 and wrapped up in early May of the same year. So, let’s dive in and know more about the details of the filming locations, shall we?

Squamish, British Columbia

Squamish, a town north of Vancouver, served as one of the primary production locations for ‘The Journey Ahead.’ The cast and crew utilized the Paradise Valley playground, just a few minutes northeast of town, to record a river-rafting rafting scene. Moreover, they seemingly lensed numerous sequences in the Brackendale Art Gallery on Government Road, as well as The Goat bar and the Squamish Farmer’s Market on Cleveland Avenue.

Squamish is highly popular among tourists for its outdoor sports facilities and is full of natural havens that provide breathtaking visuals for moviemakers to use. Surrounded by the Coast Mountains, Squamish provides beautiful hilly backdrops that one cannot help but be in awe of. Naturally, several movies and shows have held their shooting in the area to take advantage of the visual treasure that the region holds. Other movies taped in Squamish include ‘ Antlers ‘ and ‘Final Destination.’

Vancouver, British Columbia

Vancouver, British Columbia, also hosted the production unit of ‘The Journey Ahead.’ Popularly known as Hollywood North, the city has been used as a backdrop for several movies over the years. Vancouver’s non-descript skyline and well-developed infrastructure lend well to shooting scenes depicting cities worldwide. Hence, you may see the city in the background of several beloved movies, like ‘ Thor: Love and Thunder ‘ and ‘ Honor Society .’

Other Filming Locations in British Columbia

‘The Journey Ahead’ was also filmed in and around Harrison Hot Springs village in the province; it is named after Harrison Lake, located to the north of the community. The cast and crew of the movie traveled to the village and the lake to frame scenes for the movie. Additional sequences were taped near Mount Baker in the Waputik Mountains, located on the border of British Columbia and Alberta. Lastly, pivotal portions were apparently recorded near Vancouver in Burnaby and West Vancouver, a city and district municipality, respectively.

The talented Holly Robinson Peete plays the role of Madeline, a Hollywood star. You may know the actress from her work in ‘ Our Christmas Journey ‘ and ‘ Christmas in Evergreen: Bells Are Ringing .’ Kaylee Bryant essays wilderness expert Sarah in ‘The Journey Ahead’; some of Bryant’s other acting credits include ‘ Legacies ‘ and ‘ Santa Clarita Diet .’ Other cast members include Chanelle Peloso (Katie), Natasha Burnett (Rose), Ash Lee (Dr. Wiseley), and Mark Humphrey (Carl).

'The Journey Ahead' on Hallmark: How Kaylee Bryant's role in Legacies helped her come out as queer

As far as the movie goes, 'The Journey Ahead' focuses on a woman named Madeline (Holly Robinson Peet) who is a famous actress and is agitated with her current lifestyle. However, when life throws a curb in Madeline's life she decides to take matters into her hand. When the young wilderness expert, Sara (Kaylee Bryant) shows up to take Madeline on a road trip across the states from Los Angeles to New York. This is a new experience for her, as the actress was scared to board a flight after a horrid experience. From the very start, you will see a shaky behaviour in Madeline which makes it very evident that she is not happy in her present life situation. Soon, we get to see how Sara's influence in Madeline's life helps her open up and be more comfortable and radiant.  They eventually become close friends.

Kaylee Bryant and Holly Robinson Peete's still from the Hallmark's show- 'The Journey Ahead' from Hallmark's official website

Hallmark's movies stand out especially for their storylines, and 'The Journey Ahead' is another gem added to that list of feel good movies. The best part about the movie is how it shows the journey of Madeline's personality change. It also highlights some important things in life which we often forget to prioritize, like checking in with our parents, live in the moment, and lastly accepting life as it is. The solid writing of the movie is really heart touching. The pace of the movie is really good, and so is the story building along with the journey of them accepting how they can never run from their past.

When it comes to representing the roles, Kaylee Bryant, is seen playing the part of a wilderness expert who was a little star-stumped when she saw Madeline as her client. Still, the way Bryant acted as a confidant and more importantly a friend to Madeline will make you want to call your friends up and talk to them. It also shows that people can be friends regarless their age. Holly Robinson Peete is also seen playing Madeline beautifully in 'The Journey Ahead'.

On the other hand, Mark Humphrey, and Chanelle Peloso has done a splendid job in their supporting roles.

Directed by Linda Lisa Hayter, 'The Journey Ahead' is definitely worth your watch. As the movie reflects the good writing, the actor's great performances will make you lose track of time. More importantly, the movie has scenes which will definitely make you well up and want to rethink about the bonds you have in your life. It makes you wonder how much time you honestly invest in those relationships, especially with your parents.

A Call to Excellence

Strength for the Journey Ahead

By Tim Kight on August 31, 2020

1 Corinthians 16.13-14 “ Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love .”

We live in difficult, challenging times. In the years to come, it is likely to get even more difficult and more challenging. Are you prepared? Do you have the strength and stamina to face the demands of life and work in a world that is caught in the grips of a descending culture?

As we saw last week, this passage admonishes us to “act like men.” It is a call to be spiritually mature. It is a call to do what grownups do. It is a call to act like an adult, not a child. The behavior of children is impulsive, impetuous, and immature. And it seems that our nation is awash in a flood of childish behavior.

As Paul says, an adult is strong. An adult does what is right, especially when it is difficult. The Lord calls us to be strong when it counts. How you respond is most important when the situation is most difficult. When you face a challenge, be an adult and step up. Don’t flinch. Respond with the strength that is found in Jesus. “Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.” (Ephesians 6:10)

Don’t be surprised when the storm hits; be prepared. If you aren’t prepared, you will be constantly caught off guard, stressed, and unable to live and work as God intended.  You will not experience the power and the peace the Lord provides.

“If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small.” (Proverbs 24.10)

In the middle of trouble, people will run somewhere for refuge. There are many pseudo-sanctuaries where people tend to hide from adversity: some run to another person, some to entertainment, a substance, food, complaining and blaming, etc.. But these are counterfeits, and only provide the illusion of safety. None of them can provide real and lasting shelter, so putting hope in them only adds disappointment and stress to the trouble that people are already experiencing.

Being a follower of Jesus means recognizing and trusting in the Lord as the true Source of protection, rest, and strength in the midst of the storm. Strength is found in the Lord. He is the shelter.

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me … The Lord is the strength of his people.” (Psalm 28.7-8)

“O Lord my God, in you do I take refuge; save me from all my pursuers and deliver me.” (Psalm 7.1)

“He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:29-31)

The Lord calls you to himself, and he seeks to make you strong in the midst of the storm. He does not want you to faint on the day of adversity. Trust God and his strength. Act like an adult. Be strong. The storms are coming.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:9-10)

'Long, Treacherous Journey Ahead' For CT Family Devastated By Crash

W OLCOTT, CT — The community is coming to the aid of a family following a crash that left one teen dead and another critically injured in Wolcott.

The accident occurred Saturday shortly after 10 p.m. at 734 Spindle Hill Road. Police received a report that a vehicle had gone off the road and struck a tree and that the car was also on fire.

Two people were outside the vehicle and told the officers that there were still three more people inside the burning vehicle, police said.

Firefighters extinguished the flames but two people in the front of the vehicle were trapped inside and had to be extracted, police said. There were also three teens in the back seats who suffered injuries and were transported via ambulance to local hospitals, according to police.

A fundraiser to benefit the family was started by Jenna Dillon, who said her brother Jamie "was notified that his two sons were in a very tragic...car accident." She said it was a parent's "worst nightmare come to life."

Jenna Dillon wrote in the GoFundMe that Jamie's oldest son Alexander, 18, was the driver, and his younger son, Anthony, 17, was the front seat passenger.

Alexander was declared dead at the scene of the crash. Anthony was airlifted by LifeStar to Hartford Hospital where he underwent surgery and is still in critical condition in the ICU. Jenna Dillon wrote that he is "fighting for his life."

"I am asking for everybody’s help with funeral expenses for Alexander as he had no life insurance as well as for help with medical expenses for Anthony," she wrote. "It’s gonna be a long and treacherous journey ahead for all of us. If you can please keep us in your prayers and help in any way. On behalf of the entire Dillon family it will be greatly appreciated."

As of Tuesday morning, the fundraiser had generated $21,381 of a $35,000 target on 298 donations.

Go to GoFundMe to donate.

Wolcott Superintendent of Schools Shawn Simpson said in a statement, as reported by WFSB 3 TV, that two of the injured people in the vehicle are current high school students and all five teens have ties to the school district.

"Our sincere condolences and thoughts go out to those involved, their family, friends and the first responders," Simpson said, via WFSB 3 TV.

The crash is under investigation.

Willy Kambwala talks about growing up with a dream and managing to realise it...

"It was the first time in my life to be in England and at Old Trafford as well," he told Inside United , the official club magazine. "It was one of my dreams. Just coming on that day and being able to be in the stadium, watching the game.

"I know the result wasn’t what I expected, but the game was just electric. It was the first time I met the fans here at Old Trafford and they were brilliant that day. It just helped me to keep dreaming and say to myself: ‘Okay, one day: me too. I want to be there.’

"I think I was sat just behind the goal and it was so good, man. I'm going to remember it all my life."

Kambwala was never lacking in confidence and made his prediction to a team-mate, near the famous Trinity statue of George Best, Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton.

"I remember everything, you know?" he said. "It was just in front of the three legends’ statues, the front of Old Trafford, I just said like: ‘One day, I will be there.’ Everyone looked at me like: ‘Are you serious?’ But I remember, I’d just signed for Sochaux, but I was still playing for Les Ulis.

"Everyone was like ‘are you serious?’ and I was like ‘yeah, one day I will be there. I will be playing for this team, I will be playing in this stage and I will make everyone proud.’"

Hence, when United made a move for the centre-back, he had no hesitation in accepting the chance to switch to England.

"Just after Covid time," the 19-year-old recalled. "Sometimes, you hear some rumours and some things, but I was focused on the moment at Sochaux.

"When my agent came to say to me, after Covid, ‘Manchester is here, what are we doing?’ I just said: ‘Okay, that’s my dream to go. For the moment I stay focused at Sochaux, but we’re going to do everything we can do to go there, because it’s what I want to do.’

"I’m going to say I was excited, but I kept my feet on the floor because you never know what can happen in football. It was my priority to come here."

USWNT's Sophia Smith on ‘controlling confidence' ahead of 2024 Olympics

The paris games will be smith's first time competing in the olympics., by sanjesh singh • published june 4, 2024 • updated on june 4, 2024 at 8:41 am.

Sometimes, soccer just boils down to confidence.

You could be the best player in the world, but if you're in a rough patch, a one-on-one opportunity may not be as easy as it seems.

For U.S. women's national team star Sophia Smith , it wasn't always easy to become the skillful player she is today. And that's because she let outside noise influence her.

"Everyone's not going to be happy with you all the time," Smith said in an interview with NBC. "People aren't going to like you. If someone said something about my game, like 'She's not good at this,' it would obviously take a toll on my confidence.

"Then you get to the game ... now I'm stressed when I have to finish because I want to prove people wrong."

The 23-year-old hasn't logged eight goals and six assists in 10 starts for the Portland Thorns in 2024 without changing her mindset.

It's excellent form to be in with the Paris Olympics swiftly approaching. Smith said understanding her strengths and weaknesses have played a holistic part.

"Now, I feel like I'm in a good place confidently to be like, 'I know what I can do, I know what my strengths are, I know what my weaknesses are,'" Smith said. "And that's not a bad thing, that I have weaknesses. It just means I have room to grow."

Smith credited her parents for helping to control her confidence, especially when it comes to blocking the outside noise she previously let filter in.

"Something my parents always told me was no matter what, you can't let someone else control your confidence," Smith said. "When you control that, other factors at least don't affect how you feel about yourself."

The 2024 Olympics in Paris will mark Smith's first time representing the USWNT for a chance at the prestigious gold medal, a result the team hasn't claimed since 2012.

There are no age limits in women's soccer at the Olympics, but the youngest USWNT player in Tokyo was then 21-year-old forward Catarina Macario. Smith was even younger, so making the squad at the time wasn't likely.

Now, though, Smith has several USWNT accomplishments under her name, from Concacaf W Gold Cups to the US Soccer Female Player of the Year award (2022).

Adding an Olympic gold medal next would surely boost her resume — and her confidence.

The 2024 Olympic soccer tournament begins before the Opening Ceremony in Paris on July 24. For the first time in Olympic history, the women’s final concludes the tournament on Aug. 10.

Venues for soccer at the 2024 Olympics include: Paris, Nantes, Bordeaux, Marseille, Nice, Saint-Étienne and Lyon.

Celebrating One Billion MSAL.NET Downloads

for the journey ahead

Den Delimarsky

June 4th, 2024 0 2

Just this last week, the Microsoft Authentication Library for .NET (also known as MSAL.NET) hit its first billionth download .

Screenshot of the Microsoft.Identity.Client library on NuGet.org.

Even if you don’t use MSAL.NET yourself, it’s likely that you’re familiar with products that do, including Visual Studio, components in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams, Bing, Microsoft Azure, Skype, and many, many more. Even other libraries, like Microsoft.Identity.Web and Azure.Identity , use MSAL.NET under the hood.

This extraordinary milestone underscores the widespread adoption and trust that developers across the globe have placed in our library for securing their applications.

The journey to one billion

The first build of MSAL.NET (version 1.0.303282006-alpha ) hit NuGet in March of 2016—just a little over eight years ago. Since then, MSAL.NET has been on a journey of continuous evolution and improvement, driven by our commitment to providing developers with robust, user-friendly, and familiar tools for authentication and authorization. With each release, we have strived to enhance its capabilities, fine-tune the library’s performance, and enhance the out-of-the-box security while empowering developers to build secure and modern applications across a broad set of .NET-supported platforms and scenarios. From seamlessly integrating with Microsoft Entra ID , adding native integration with authentication brokers , supporting a wide range of authentication protocols, and integrating newer services like Microsoft Entra External ID , MSAL.NET has become the de facto solution for developers who want to have a plug-in solution for token acquisition in desktop, mobile, web, and API applications.

A vibrant community ecosystem

The success of MSAL.NET would not have been possible without the incredible support and contributions of our vibrant community of developers, partners, and contributors. From providing valuable feedback and insights to actively participating in discussions, sharing best practices, and contributing code, the MSAL.NET community has played a pivotal role in shaping the library and driving innovation in identity management.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every member of the community for their passion, dedication, and commitment to advancing the state of identity management in the .NET ecosystem. Every single pull request, big or small, whether to our core code or documentation, makes this library better for everyone . We wouldn’t be here without our community. Thank you.

Looking ahead

Just because we’ve hit our first billion doesn’t mean it’s now time to stop. There is so much more to come. We will continue to listen to your feedback and invest in building features and capabilities that empower you, the developer, to be successful when it comes to authenticating users in your applications and services.

To learn more about all the goodness we have cooking for MSAL, check out our documentation . And of course, we can’t wait to hear your feedback about our library on GitHub .

Rezai: I want to inspire all the people in Afghanistan

Jawad Rezai tells FIFA that Afghanistan is set for a bright future as they face up to their latest FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Afghanistan's Jawad Rezai in action during a FWCQ on 21 November, 2023

Jawad Rezai made his debut for Afghanistan in November of last year

Australia-born forward, 22, is targeting maximum points in March double-header vs India

He has been speaking to FIFA about his desire to give "hope and belief" to Afghans

With his family having experienced a perilous refugee journey to Australia, during which an older brother was born at sea, Jawad Rezai was raised in an environment where little fazed him.

That unflappability has remained a hallmark of his character and extended, as he told FIFA, to making his international debut for Afghanistan in November as a 22-year-old, far from both the land of his birth and that of his ancestry.

“I wasn’t nervous at all, just excited when I heard the FIFA anthem as we walked on to the pitch. I was actually really confident and felt that I could score.”

Coming on as a second-half substitute, Rezai wasn’t able to help turn things around as Afghanistan lost 4-0 in that 2026 FIFA World Cup™ qualification match against Kuwait in neutral Saudi Arabia.

It was, though, touch-and-go as to whether he’d get on at all following an aborted debut five days earlier in Qatar.

“I’d actually received my first call-up a few years earlier but it was just at the start of the pandemic and didn’t happen so I was really excited for these two matches.

“We arrived in Qatar and I was warming up before the match when the team manager came over and said there had been some issues with my paperwork and registration and that I wouldn’t be able to play.

“I was then sweating the whole time before the match against Kuwait and was awake until 4am on the day of the match waiting for that paperwork to come through which, thankfully, it eventually did.”

With back-to-back defeats to start the second round of qualification, Afghanistan sit bottom of the Group A standings. But with two pivotal matches this month against India, Rezai knows how quickly things can turn as the nation bids to progress to the third round for the first time.

“Our aim is for nothing less than six points in these two matches, I’m hoping I can be called up and help the squad meet those aims because there’s such a huge amount of potential for football in Afghanistan.

“I tell you this is 100 per cent true, that if the right squad can be assembled, we will go to the Asian Cup and the World Cup within the next 15 years because we have such a lot of talent in the country.”

One of six siblings, Rezai’s parents hail from the central Afghan province of Daykundi, and on trips back to the country he has seen first-hand the passion for football, even if the facilities and the infrastructure are a bit different to those he experienced growing up in Australia.

“Where my parents are from there are villages surrounded by mountains, it’s several hours from Kabul, but all the children want to do is play football even if the surface is uneven or has rocks on it.

“Even though things were a bit different for me growing up in Australia, it was still all about football.

“We didn’t really have any phones or other kinds of distractions, so it was just football, and that’s why I always say I had the best childhood. Now I want to try and give back to others through football.”

for the journey ahead

That chance to inspire the next generation of Afghan footballers is what’s driving the young winger to try and bring success to his nation.

It’s been more than 20 years since the team has been able to play a home FIFA World Cup qualification match and, even with various political issues inside the nation, Rezai can see the unifying impact of the sport.

“A lot of people maybe didn’t have the same kind of opportunities that I had growing up so I want to inspire all the people in the country.

“Making my debut was a dream come true, I got goosebumps walking out for that match, and afterwards I got so many messages of support from people from all different backgrounds.

“Now I want to make sure I always play with energy and chase those dreams to give hope and belief to everybody in Afghanistan.”
