Roglič vs. Remco: Race for the Tour de France Starts at Critérium du Dauphiné

Both evenepoel and roglič — who've only raced 18 and 12 days, respectively, so far in 2024 — are emphasizing progress over results this week at the dauphiné..

SAINT-POURCAIN, France (Velo) — Remco Evenepoel versus Primož Roglič — one of cycling’s marquee matchups — resumes this week at the Critérium du Dauphiné .

The two sparring superstars are both coming off devastating injuries, and return to racing Sunday with big question marks about if they’ll be ready to race the Tour de France  in top form.

Anyone expecting fireworks from two of the “Big 4” during the eight-stage, Tour primer at the Dauphiné could be in for a disappointment.

Both were quick to tamp down expectations as they each race for the first time since their high-speed crash at Itzulia Basque Country that also derailed Jonas Vingegaard .

“I must be patient and take each stage as it comes,” Evenepoel said. “If I have good results, fair enough, if not, too bad. I just hope to progress and reach a better level with each day.”

The Dauphiné typically would see both Evenepoel and Roglič swinging for the fences with savage, all-in attacks to win the prestigious harbinger of Tour success contested high in the French Alps.

Instead, both find themselves in a race against time to chase peak form in time for the Tour de France and the high-stakes clash with Tadej Pogačar for the yellow jersey.

Pogačar roared through the Giro d’Italia largely unrivaled, and is cooling his jets before an altitude camp ahead of the June 29 start in Florence, Italy.

Roglič: ‘It’s been awhile since I raced’

Primoz Roglič

Now all eyes turn to the eight-stage Dauphiné, and how the legs Roglič and Evenepoel will respond to race speed and thrills after nearly two months away from the action.

Both Evenepoel and Roglič — who’ve only raced 18 and 12 days, respectively, so far in 2024 — are emphasizing progress over results this week at the Dauphiné.

“It’s a while since I raced, so it’s nice to be back,” Roglič told FloBikes at the start line Sunday. “For me I just need to be a race situation with the guys. I have just a couple of racing days with the guys, so that’s important for this week.”

Of all the riders injured at Itzulia, Roglič perhaps came out of the April disaster the least damaged. Riders like Jay Vine, who only last week took off a neck brace, are still reeling from the injury setback.

Both Evenepoel and Vingegaard underwent surgeries, and the Danish two-time yellow jersey winner is skipping racing this month at the Dauphiné or the Tour de Suisse in favor of a highly controlled altitude camp high in the French Alps.

Roglič, who did not break any bones in the April spill, could be better positioned to leave the Dauphiné with some confidence in his legs.

“He’s back on track,” said Bora-Hansgrohe sport director Christian Pomer. “When Primož raced for the last time at the Tour of the Basque Country, he was in excellent shape.

“Beating Remco in the opening time trial despite the small incident he had, it was a great performance,” Pomer said of the Basque Country. “The big goal is the Tour de France and the Dauphiné is just a next step in his preparation.”

Evenepoel targeting TT test

Evenepoel

Soudal Quick-Step is echoing the sentiment that July counts more than what happens this week.

Evenepoel claims he hasn’t even reviewed the Dauphiné road book or studied the stages, but he is putting a circle around Wednesday’s 34.4km individual time trial, both as a chance to win a stage as well as to test his shoulder and his ability to carry weight and speed against the clock.

The Belgian superstar isn’t looking past the Dauphiné , but admits he has his eyes on larger prizes at the Tour de France and Olympic Games.

“When I crashed in Lombardia, we probably rushed my return a little bit,” Evenepoel said. “That’s why I think we need patience so as not to seek and find my best form today or next week, but to hope to find it at the Tour de France and towards the end of it. We have ideas for it to be the case.”

With Evenepoel and Roglič both perhaps keeping their powder dry this week, several other A-listers, including Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) and Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos Grenadiers), could be scrapping for the win.

Sepp Kuss — who could lead Visma-Lease a Bike if Vingegaard doesn’t start the Tour — and Matteo Jorgenson will also be riding for the win.

Denmark's two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard will not ride at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris after being overlooked for the final place in their road team in favour of Mikkel Bjerg. Bjerg will also ride in the individual time trial. Vingegaard had expressed his desire to race in Paris, but was not selected after suffering multiple fractures in a serious crash in April.
