How to Visit Newfoundland's Iconic Western Brook Pond Fjord

Western Brook Pond Fjord

Things to do

There are some places so breathtaking in Canada, that even the best photographs barely convey the beauty and scale of them. Newfoundland's iconic Western Brook Pond Fjord located in Gros Morne National Park is one of those places. With more photos slowly popping up on social media, travel brochures, and websites of this picturesque location, everyone wants to know, "How can I get here?" Getting here requires some time and effort, but that only makes the views that much more rewarding.

If getting straight to the views is your top priority, book a flight into Deer Lake Regional Airport External Link Title which will put you just 30 minutes away from the park entrance. If you have a bit more time to explore the province and want to take the scenic route, land at St. John's International Airport and spend a few days exploring Newfoundland's capital city External Link Title before hitting the road. The drive from here is just over 650 kilometres to the entrance of Gros Morne National Park which can be done in one long day of driving (about 7 hours non-stop) or broken up into a leisurely two-day adventure with an overnight stop in Gander.

Once you've reached the entrance to the park, you'll start a scenic drive along the coast on Highway 430 passing the small coastal towns of Rocky Harbour, Lobster Cove, and Green Point until you reach the Western Brook Pond parking lot. From here there are a few different ways to explore the stunning fjord, depending on your time and the experience you're looking for.

Option 1: Hike down to the dock and enjoy the views from the water

Even the views from the dock are amazing

If you’re short on time, or just looking for a quick day trip, this is the option for you. From the parking lot follow the Western Brook Pond Trail approximately 3 kilometres across the gravel and boardwalk path as it makes its way down to the water. Once at the dock spend some time soaking in the views and exploring the side trails before making your way back to the parking lot.

Option 2: Book a boat tour and explore the fjord

Explore the fjord with BonTours

If you're looking to explore more of the Fjord, a boat tour with BonTours External Link Title comes with the added benefit of knowledgeable commentary and a few scenic stops along the water's edge. Make sure to reserve your ticket in advance online!.

Once you've made your way down to the docks, you'll hop on board the boat for a two hour tour of this spectacular glacier-carved, land-locked fjord. See waterfalls cascading 2,000 feet down the staggering cliffs and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. Be sure to have your camera charged and ready!

Option 3: Hike up to the top of the gorge

The Western Brook Pond Gorge

For even more adventure sign up for the guided hike option with BonTours External Link Title . This full-day, 12-kilometre journey to the top of the gorge requires a good amount of physical fitness and some hiking experience.

The day starts with a high speed shuttle boat taking 30 minutes to cross the fjord to the far end where you'll begin your hike. From there, you'll wander through pristine forest wilderness, cross river beds, and see waterfalls as you wind your way up the mountain. Finally after 3.5 to 4 hours of hiking, the top of the gorge is visible and the valley of Western Brook Pond opens up below you. This is the view you've been waiting for! Snap the selfie of a lifetime with a picture perfect vista behind you. After a rest for lunch it's back down the way you came and back across the fjord soaking in the views one last time. The total day out with Bon Tours is approximately 10 hours from start to finish, including the time to get back to the parking lot. Enjoy a hot shower, a good meal, and a cold drink afterwards -- you've earned it!

Option 4: The long range traverse

Great views along the Long Range Traverse

If you really want to get into the wild and have experience hiking in the backcountry, consider tackling the long range traverse. This unmarked route starts with the same BonTours boat shuttle mentioned above, and then covers 35 kilometres of hiking, usually taking 3-4 nights to complete. Advance reservations with Parks Canada External Link Title are a must for this trail as a quota system is in place. You will also be required to attend an orientation session the day before your scheduled departure and pass a backcountry skills and wayfinding test before being allowed to depart on the trail.

With that in mind, those who are up for the challenge will be rewarded with a sense of wilderness and some of the world's most jaw-dropping landscapes. Campsites with tent pads are set up at navigation checkpoints along the way giving you a place to pitch your tent and rest for the night as you make your way across park. Hikers may come across moose, black bears, coyotes, and a variety of bird species along the way. Snow is common on the trail until July and weather can vary greatly day to day.

The trail starts with a steep ascent to the top of the gorge for your first day. From there the landscape flattens out, but still has several hills and valleys along the way, giving each day of the hike its own unique challenges. The traverse finishes off with a climb up Gros Morne Mountain for expansive views in all directions. Once completed you'll end your final day at the Ferry Gulch Campsite before hiking out to the Gros Morne Mountain Trailhead parking lot. Enjoy a few days back in town resting your feet and treating yourself to some locally cooked meals as you reminisce about your adventures in Newfoundland!

Bonne Bay – Discover Newfoundland’s True Fjord

Dale Dunlop

The word ‘fjord’ has magical qualities that evoke deep Scandinavian ocean inlets surrounded by massive cliffs that are considered, rightly so, as some of the most beautiful landscapes on this planet. People pay big bucks to take cruises into these fjords on lines like Viking and Norwegian, but did you know that Newfoundland has a fjord of its own? You don’t have to cross the Atlantic to enjoy a cruise into a fjord. Join Alison and me on a boat tour of Bonne Bay, Newfoundland’s only true fjord.

This is my fourth post on the many amazing things to do in UNESCO World Heritage Site Gros Morne National Park and it won’t be the last. Previously we explored the Tablelands, debated the merits of climbing Gros Morne Mountain and checked out Bonne Bay from the Lookout Hills trail. In this post we will stay at sea level and view the grandeur of Gros Morne from the water, but first a recommendation of where to stay on the northern side of Bonne Bay.

Ocean View Hotel, Rocky Harbour

fjord tour newfoundland

I previously recommended staying in Woody Point while exploring the south side of Bonne Bay which includes the Tablelands, the Discovery Centre and many excellent hiking trails. Once you’ve spent a few days in that part of Gros Morne you should relocate to the north side of Bonne Bay where you’ll find the communities of Rocky Harbour and Norris Point. There are quite a few more accommodation choices on this side of the bay. Our favourite is the Ocean View Hotel in Rocky Harbour. It has a great location right on Rocky Harbour with balconies or patios with every room. It’s also got a great feel to it that is created by the many pieces of art work that adorn its walls, like this school of fish.

fjord tour newfoundland

Throughout the common areas you will find folk art pieces by Port aux Choix resident Ben Ploughman which are for sale. They absolutely add something special to this place. Here are some of the pieces that caught my eye.

fjord tour newfoundland

This last piece is evocative of the boat trip on Western Brook Pond which I will describe in the next post. After taking this trip I knew I had to buy it and it now hangs proudly in our home in St. Margaret’s Bay, a reminder of a memory that will be treasured for the rest of my life.

Western Brook Pond by Ben Ploughman

In addition to the art work, the Ocean View Hotel is one of the best places in western Newfoundland to attend a kitchen party. This is a celebration of Newfoundland music and story telling that no one who visits the Rock should miss. The Anchor Pub is the ideal place to do this and you can get screeched in here too! Lastly, the Oceans Room is one of the best places to eat in the Gros Morne area.

In case you are wondering, I do not get any consideration from the places I recommend and paid the same as you would for our stay at the Ocean Inn.

Bon Tours of Bonne Bay

The Emm-Cat, Bonne Bay

So why did I describe Bonne Bay as Newfoundland’s true fjord? Simple, because it’s accurate. A true fjord is one that is open to the sea and contains salt, not fresh water. Gros Morne does have two former fjords, Trout River Pond and Western Brook Pond, but as the weight of the glaciers that created them receded the land rose and cut them off from the sea. They are both amazing places to visit, but they are not true fjords.

Bon Tours offers a variety of boat tours on Bonne Bay, but the most popular is the one that leaves Norris Point at 2:00 PM every day during the season and takes tourists on a two and a half hour excursion along the shores of the fjord. It costs $48.00 for adults, $30.00 for 12-16 and $20.00 for children and is worth every penny. Although the Western Brook Pond Tour, which I’ll describe in another post, is more spectacular it does require walking 3 kms. (1.85 miles) each way to reach the departure point. If this is something you do not think you can handle then the Bonne Bay tour is a good substitute. In truth, capable visitors should do both on a visit to Gros Morne.

The  Emm-Cat departs from the Cat Stop Pub in Norris Point which allows visitors to enjoy a leisurely lunch on the waterfront before boarding. Alternatively, you can stop into the aquarium at Bonne Bay Marine Station which is right next door to see many of the denizens of the Bonne Bay area.

The tour begins by heading out to the mouth of Bonne Bay where you can see the Lobster Cove lighthouse in the distance. It then crosses to the south side of the bay where there are the sheer cliffs of the Lookout Hills.

fjord tour newfoundland

Here you will see a number of waterfalls.

Small Waterfall, Bonne Bay

And a number of rock pinnacles like these below.

Pinnacles of Lookout Hills, Bonne Bay

The tour is accompanied by  raconteur from the crew mates with a number of humorous stories like the time they came across a couple of nude sunbathers at this tiny beach.

Nude Beach, Bonne Bay

The tour then passes by the various communities that make up the town of Woody Point. This is the Woody Point lighthouse with the Tablelands lurking in the background.

Woody Point Lighthouse, Bonne Bay

Woody Point has a number of unusual features in some of its buildings such as this strange second floor opening that the crew described as a mother-in-law door.

fjord tour newfoundland

Notice how close the windows in these buildings are to the roof.

fjord tour newfoundland

This is the Woody Point Heritage Theatre, probably the most unique building architecturally in the entire Gros Morne area. Originally an Orange Lodge it is now the home of the acclaimed Writers at Woody Point Festival which takes place every August and features writers, comedians and musicians from across Canada. It is one of the most widely anticipated events every year in western Newfoundland.

Woody Point Heritage Theatre, Bonne Bay

I couldn’t help but notice this van parked in Woody Point. It is was from Freewheeling Adventures which is a bike and hike company based only a few minutes from where I live in St. Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia. It was great to see that they were offering their Viking Trail bike trip once again after being shut down due to Covid for over a year.

fjord tour newfoundland

Despite being a very popular tourist destination, Woody Point is still very much a fishing community as attested by these fishing sheds or stages as they are called in Newfoundland and Labrador.

fjord tour newfoundland

This is the Bonne Bay water taxi that Bon Tours runs between Norris Point and Woody Point and as you can see from those waiting at the wharf, it is very popular. If you are staying in Woody Point and want to go on the Bonne Bay tour you can take this over to Norris Point and back for free.

Water Taxi, Bonne Bay

This is one of the Woody Point Cemeteries with three colourful dories on the beach. This is about as pure Newfoundland as it gets.

fjord tour newfoundland

Just up from Woody Point you get a good view of the Discovery Centre.

fjord tour newfoundland

One of the best reasons for taking the Bonne Bay boat tour is to see the Tablelands from the water. Previously we looked at them from above on the Lookout Hills trail and up close on the Tablelands trail and now here is a third perspective from the waters of Bonne Bay.

fjord tour newfoundland

You’ll have noticed that it was mostly cloudy during our tour which we had no control over, but the clouds themselves were interesting. Apparently another feature of Gros Morne is its unusual clouds which, believe or not, attract tourists whose principal interest is photographing rare and unusual cloud formations. Who knew?

fjord tour newfoundland

From Woody Point using the 400 mm. setting on my camera lens I could just make out the red chairs at the top of the Lookout Hills trail that we had sat in only a few days before.

fjord tour newfoundland

After passing by Woody Point the  Emm Cat  recrosses Bonne Bay to enter a sheltered cove where there is a great example of  upraised sedimentary rock that once would have been the ocean floor. Each of the bands in the rock represents thousands of years of silt and dead marine life accumulation eventually hardening into limestone.

Upraised Ocean Bed, Bonne Bay

Within these sediments are found some very strange intrusions which if you didn’t know better might think were actually man made drawings. This definitely reminded me of a flock of frigate birds.

fjord tour newfoundland

After leaving the cove it is only a short distance back to Norris Point and disembarkation, but not before the crew sang a few Newfoundland songs.

fjord tour newfoundland

So there you have the Bonne Bay boat tour. Next we’ll take the Western Brook Pond tour, but not before a few stops on the way. Please join us on what promises to be a great outing.

The Ultimate West Newfoundland Itinerary (+Gros Morne)

August 1, 2021 //  by  Follow Me Away //   Leave a Comment

If you are planning your West Newfoundland Itinerary, you’re going to want to check out this Newfoundland & Labrador road trip. Newfoundland is located in the most eastern part of Canada. Western Newfoundland is known for its beautiful landscape and the Gros Morne National Park.

It is one of the most picturesque parts of Canada and full of beautiful landscapes and untouched wilderness. It’s also one of the best places in Canada to see Fall foliage . You’ll find charming waterfront and historic coastal towns, awesome boat tours, and a beautiful scenic road just waiting for you to explore them.

This road trip in Newfoundland & Labrador is a great vacation any time of year. If you want to be guaranteed the likelihood of sunny and slightly warm weather, you’ll want to visit in the late summer months. But in the fall and winter, the landscape is just as pretty, albeit a little colder. No matter when you visit, you’ll enjoy driving through this beautiful area of Canada.

So, let’s take a look at the ultimate Western Newfoundland itinerary!

A couple kissing on the shore of the Trout River in Gros Morne National Park. There is a mountain range on the other side of the river. The sun is starting to set. It is one of the best stops on a West Newfoundland itinerary.

Getting To West Newfoundland And Gros Morne National Park

The easiest way to get to West Newfoundland is to fly into the Deer Lake Regional Airport. It is a small airport, but we still had a great experience when we flew in.

If you are driving to Western Newfoundland from somewhere else in Canada, you can take a ferry to Newfoundland & Labrador. You can take the ferry from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland & Labrador. The trip runs twice a day, and the crossing usually takes 6-8 hours, depending on the weather. The ferry to Argentia takes around 16 hours. You can also access Newfoundland & Labrador from mainland Canada via Quebec.

Getting Around During Your Newfoundland & Labrador Road Trip

To get around Newfoundland & Labrador you will absolutely need a car. You simply won’t be able to see everything on this road trip itinerary without one. If you are flying into Newfoundland & Labrador, you can easily rent a car at the airport. In some of the larger cities, you may find rideshare services, but for the most part, your most reliable bet is to drive your own vehicle.

That being said, there are often rental car shortages, so it is best to book in advance! The airports are regional and smaller, so booking ahead ensures that you get the car you want!

Day 1: Intro To Gros Morne National Park

On the first day of your West Newfoundland itinerary, you’ll be exploring the historic waterfront town of Woody Point. You’ll also spend part of the day getting introduced to the beauty that is Gros Morne National Park.

Stop 1: Woody Point Historic Waterfront District

Start your Newfoundland & Labrador vacation itinerary with a morning exploring the Woody Point Historic Waterfront District. The small town of Woody Point is located right in the heart of Gros Morne. It’s a Nationally Registered Heritage District and there are several registered heritage buildings as well.

With a town population of only just over 280, it is the epitome of a small Newfoundland & Labrador town, known as “outports” in the province!

While you walk the Historic Waterfront District there are a few heritage buildings you’ll want to check out. The earliest buildings were built in the 1870s and the newer buildings were built in the early 1900s. There is an information center where you can find a map to take a self-guided tour of the heritage buildings.

A white and red building on the shore of a bay in Woody Point. There is a red row boat with white trim floating in the water. You can see other colorful buildings that are yellow, blue, and red, in the back ground. There is a hill covered in trees. It is one of the best stops on a West Newfoundland itinerary.

Stop 2: Parks Canada Discovery Center

The Parks Canada Discovery Center is where you’ll first be introduced to Gros Morne National Park. While you’re there, you’ll be able to learn all about Gros Morne and what makes it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside the center, there are also various displays that tell you about the local flora and fauna you may see while exploring the park.

At the Discovery Center, you’ll also be able to purchases passes for entry onto the National Park, talk with Park Rangers, and more. Just outside of the Discovery Center you’ll find a few trailheads that take you through that particular area of the park. It is a must-stop place on your West Newfoundland itinerary.

Stop 3: The Tablelands in Gros Morne

One of the trailheads just outside of the Discovery Park is the trailhead that leads you to views of the Tablelands. You’ll want to take the Lookout Trail. The trail is a moderate level of difficulty and is a 3.6-mile looping trail.

The Lookout Trail is a popular trail because it gives you some of the best views of the Tablelands in the park. It took the Earth over 400 million years to create the unique landscape of the Tablelands, and it is worth the hike. The Tablelands are a really unique landscape of orange rock that is truly amazing when you remember how it was created.

The Tablelands are part of the Earth’s mantel which is three layers below the surface of the earth. This is one of the few places on earth where you can see the Earth’s mantel. It was created through tectonic upheaval and Continental shifting. You can explore it in person today at Gros Morne National Park!

On the other side of the boardwalk there is a lush green area. It is one of the best things to see on a West Newfoundland itinerary.

Stop 4: Sunset at Eastern Point Trail

After hiking to see the view of the Tablelands, head near the Trout River area of Gros Morne. There you’ll find the trailhead for the Eastern Point Trail. This is one of the best places on your West Newfoundland itinerary to enjoy a beautiful sunset.

The hike itself is fairly easy. At only 1.5 miles, you can stop at any point along the trail to enjoy the sun as it sets over the rocky shore. It is also an incredibly scenic trail. You’ll wind through various landscapes of rock, grassy hills, and even coastal views.

Even if the weather isn’t the best, the dining room is full of large windows that look out onto the view year-round. The menu is classics like burgers, sandwiches, fries, salads, and even shakes. Please make sure to call ahead to see if this restaurant is open! Sometimes it is only open for special events such as the Writer’s At Woody Point Festival, sometimes it is closed for the season!

Our family of six (us, two grandparents and two grandkids (three generations altogether) had an absolutely unforgettable experience today on the high seas with Mike. Captain Mike is warm, fun, a true pleasure to spend time with — great stories and great laughs! We sailed out in the middle of some amazing fog, and caught some gigantic cod on our trip. Honestly, Captain Mike knows where to find them! Cod after cod after cod came out — he screeched us all in and made us really feel welcome in his beautiful province. We could have stayed out all day with him, we were all enjoying ourselves so much. Captain Mike was fabulous with our kids (12 and 10). How to Get Your Photo Taken at the Iconic Western Brook Pond Fjord

Western Brook Pond, Gros Morne National Park

Whenever someone sees this photo of the enigmatic and awe-inspiring Western Brook Pond fjord, we get asked, “how can I get my picture taken here – at this exact location?”

The truth of the matter is that it is not a simple process to reach this point – there is no road hiding behind the cameraperson with a busload of tourists waiting for their turn to jump in place and take the coveted “arms upraised” position.

To get to this location involves a hike that requires a moderate-to-high level of fitness. For many people, it will be one of the most challenging, and most rewarding, experiences of their lifetime. However, as Clem Reid, hiking guide with BonTours points out, “the fact that you can get there, the fact that it’s tough to get there, and the fact that not everyone is willing to go there for that photo, is what makes it special.”

Western Brook Pond, Gros Morne National Park

Of course, it is not necessary to partake in this hike to enjoy the majesty of the Western Brook Pond fjord. A 45-minute walk will take you to stunning vistas and a dock where you can step on board a tour boat for a two-hour trip through the fjord, which offers equally as stunning views. However, for the more advanced adventurer, there are a few options to hike up the eastern edge of the gulch for that once-in-a-lifetime photo op.

Option 1 – Day Hike of Western Brook Pond Gorge

Your first option is a relatively new tour offered by BonTours . They offer a guided day hike to this exact location where you can have your picture taken. After a 45-minute walk to the dock, you take a boat shuttle that drops you and your guide off at the mouth of the fjord. Your guide brings you up to the top of the gorge and along the way provides interpretation of the ecosystem and history of the area. Once you have taken in the view and had a well-deserved lunch break, you will head back down and hop back on the shuttle to return to the dock and the 45-minute walk back to the parking area. While the entire excursion takes about 8 hours, the actual hike from where the boat drops you off to the top of the gorge is about 3.5-4 hours depending on your hiking ability and how much you are carrying.

Long Range Mountain Hike, Gros Morne National Park

Option 2 – Multi-Day Hike of the Long Range Traverse Hiking Trail

Your second option is to hike the entire Long Range Traverse, which is about 35km and a multiple day hike (usually about 3-4 nights). The Long Range Traverse is part of the Long Range Mountains and marks the north end of the Appalachian mountain range. It goes without saying that you should be an experienced hiker to take this option. In fact, Parks Canada requires hikers of the Long Range Traverse to pass a warden’s meeting whereby proof of knowledge of navigational tools is required. Similar to the day hike option, the Long Range Traverse hike starts with a boat tour at Western Brook Pond where you get dropped off to the mouth of the fjord. On day 1 of hiking you reach this exact location, and you then continue on the trail for a couple of days until you reach the final destination which is Gros Morne Mountain’s James Callaghan Trail. Remember that this is a backcountry trail and therefore there are no trail markings, so topo map reading and compass skills are essential for navigation. Alternatively, there are tour operators in Gros Morne National Park that offer guided hiking tours of the Long Range Traverse, including Gros Morne Adventures .

  • Celebrity Edge: Taste of Luxury

Plan Your Cruise With AAA

With many cruise lines now catering to the single crowd, going on a cruise as a single adult can be a great way to meet interesting people to make new friends, new connections and lifelong memories.

No matter what you envision from your dream singles cruise, you can find a ship and a series of destinations that will create unforgettable memories. There are a lot of options to explore, however and the sheer range of choices can quickly feel overwhelming. To help, we've highlighted several of the best cruises for singles. Keep reading to learn what, exactly, sets these expeditions apart.

1. Celebrity Millennium: Bali, Malaysia and Thailand

Many singles gravitate towards exciting adventures in exotic destinations such as Bali, Malaysia and Thailand, which hold appeal simply because they provide such distinct scenery and such powerful cultural experiences.

Not all singles are willing or prepared to navigate these destinations on their own, however and this is where the Celebrity Millennium comes into play: an upscale cruise removes the hassle of planning and, instead, encourages you to relax in style.

This particular Celebrity Millennium adventure spans nearly two weeks, incorporating a unique blend of serene island adventures, cosmopolitan exploration and meaningful temple visits. Onboard, globally inspired menus and resort-style lounges are to be expected, along with plenty of adults-only spaces that will appeal to singles.

2. Celebrity Apex: Norwegian Fjords

If Norway's iconic fjords are on your bucket list, you can't afford to miss this awe-inspiring Celebrity Apex trip . Departing from Southampton, the eight-night cruise meanders along the coast of Norway, hitting pleasant spots such as Geiranger or Kristiansand for spectacular scenery and outdoor adventures. Side trips are available and, with up to ten hours docked, there is plenty of time to explore at your own pace.

Accommodation options abound and, when traveling alone, the staterooms' king-size mattresses feel extra spacious. An adults-only solarium will appeal to relaxation-oriented solo travelers, while abundant dining and entertainment options make it easy to find and connect with new friends.

3. Celebrity Summit: Grand Heartland Adventure

If you're struggling to choose between glamorous onboard experiences and outdoorsy experiences on land, you're in luck: Celebrity Summit provides the best of both worlds with its various Cruisetour offerings. There are many excellent options that depart from Vancouver, Anchorage or Fairbanks — but the Grand Heartland Adventure is worth considering if you crave something new.

During the Grand Heartland Cruisetour, you'll explore the stunning Inside Passage by cruise ship, before docking in adventure-oriented destinations such as Juneau and Sitka. From there, you'll continue to observe national treasures such as the Hubbard Glacier. Further exploration takes place aboard a glass-domed railcar and even a riverboat.

There's also a lot to experience onboard. The AquaClass stateroom represents a true oasis for single travelers, but the exclusive cocktail lounge and martini bar also warrant a visit. With nearly two weeks of cruising and exploration, you'll have plenty of time to unwind on your own but can also form fast friendships with similarly adventurous travelers.

4. Celebrity Edge: Taste of Luxury

Cruises for singles over 50 often emphasize the finer things in life, like elevated cuisine or exquisite wines. These sophisticated details are in abundant supply aboard the Celebrity Edge, which offers a decidedly elegant experience with its Taste of Luxury tour. Although often frequented by retired couples, Celebrity Edge's trips work well as singles cruises.

Available for three or four nights, this remarkable journey begins in Sydney and primarily emphasizes curated on-board experiences. That being said, there are enticing opportunities to explore while docked in Tasmania. With such glamorous suites, restaurants and clubs on board, however, the best attractions can be enjoyed without ever leaving this luxury cruise ship.

5. Disney Wish: Bahamian Cruise from Port Canaveral

Don't assume that Disney cruise adventures are only for kids or families. If you are a proud Disney adult, you can make amazing memories aboard a thematic cruise for singles. This is a popular vacation among theme park enthusiasts, who enjoy a dose of Disney magic while also finding valuable opportunities to indulge and relax.

Disney Wish's three-night Bahamian cruise is also an excellent option for singles who crave a sea-based experience but only have a few days to spare. Yes, young travelers will be around, but there are plenty of adult-only spaces, including sports bars, dance clubs, dedicated pools and even an onboard spa and salon. Musicals, 3D films and fireworks encourage you to embrace your inner child.

6. Oceania Cruises: In the Path of Cartier — Boston to Montreal

As we've mentioned, smaller ships provide some of the best cruises for singles over 50. Not everyone desires a river-based trip, however and with Oceania Cruises , there is no need to choose between exclusivity and ocean liner grandeur.

A signature experience can be found aboard Oceania Cruises' iconic Nautica ship, which is calming, yet elegant. Echoing the journey of the famed explorer Jacques Cartier, this tour provides a powerful introduction to Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and New Brunswick.

The land-based excursions are highly educational and, of course, beautiful to behold, but there's also a lot to love on board. Belgian chocolate, Bulgari amenities and turndown service await, with many accommodations also providing spectacular views. Open-seating dining makes it easy to interact with other vacationers while wine-tasting and guest lectures promise plenty of onboard enrichment.

7. Oceania Riviera: Ancient World Wonders — Athens to Istanbul

Another appealing option for singles who prefer slightly smaller ships, Oceania Cruises' Ancient World Wonders tour provides stops at some of the world's most iconic locations, such as Santorini and Corfu. Adventures in Dubrovnik and Istanbul can also be expected. On board this remarkable vessel, you'll gaze in awe at the Lalique Grand Staircase and, in general, enjoy a refined ambiance.

Be prepared to try new flavors and forms of expression as you explore unique offerings such as the Artist Loft and Culinary Center. Deep relaxation awaits at the Aquamar Spa or within your luxuriously contemporary stateroom or suite. This ten-night voyage provides plenty of time to lose yourself in the grandeur of the ship and the treasures of Greece, Montenegro, Croatia and Turkey.
