Catanduanes: Updated Guide to Happy Island + 5 Days Itinerary

I have said it before and will say it again — Catanduanes is one of the most underrated destinations in the Philippines. With its pastoral hills, cliffs, and beaches, you won’t run out of places to see and things to do in this province.

Catanduanes is located in the easternmost side of Luzon. It used to be called the “The Land of Howling Winds” since it’s position is open to the path of tropical storms entering the country. Recently, it’s being marketed as “Happy Island” which is a more positive nickname for this beautiful province.

Hali and I went here sometime in 2016. On the first day of our trip, I immediately knew that this place is special. We spent days exploring the province, from the hidden beaches in Caramoran to the now-famed Binurong Point in Baras. In most of the places we’d visited, there were few or no people at all.

Tourism in Catanduanes is relatively new. In fact, its local tourism branch was only established around 2016 as well. There is still so much to discover in Catanduanes.

Here’s a starter guide on your journey here, including a sample 5 days itinerary.

When is the best time to visit

How to get around, catanduanes travel guide map, 5 days itinerary in catanduanes, where to eat, budget and expenses, things to know before you go, what to read next:, how to get to catanduanes.

The easiest way to get to Catanduanes is to book a flight to Virac. As of this writing, Cebu Pacific flies once a day from Manila to Virac.

It will take about 15-16 hours of land travel to get to Catanduanes.

  • Option 1: From Manila (Cubao, Pasay or Alabang), ride a bus with direct route to Tabaco. Fare is about P840, and travel time is 11-12 hours.
  • Option 2: An alternative is to ride a bus to Legazpi. Travel time is 12 hours. From Legazpi bus terminal, ride a jeep or van bound for Tabaco.
  • From Tabaco, ride a pedicab to Tabaco Port.
  • Once in Tabaco Port, you can ride a passenger boat to either San Andres Port (P290 aircon, P220 non-aircon) or Virac Port (P320 aircon, P240 non-aircon). Travel time is about 4 hours. There is also a fast craft available to either port. Fare is P320 and travel time is shorter at 2 hours. However, schedules for the fast craft are limited.

It’s best to head directly to Virac Port, since Virac is the capital of the province and it’s easy to find hotels and resorts there. Other attractions in Catanduanes are also accessible from Virac.

If you got a ferry to San Andres Port, you can ride a jeepney or charter a tricycle to take you to Virac.

Here’s a simplified infographic on how to get to Catanduanes.

How to get to Catanduanes map

It’s important to plan your schedule carefully. As mentioned above, Catanduanes is in the path of tropical storms so it’s not recommended to go here the rainy season.

The best time to visit Catanduanes is during the summer months, from March to May.

From Virac, there are public vans, jeepneys, and tricycles that can take you around or to nearby towns.

The best way to explore Catanduanes is by chartering a private motorbike or tricycle. Rates vary depending on the destination. If you want to explore the attractions in Virac, a motorbike tour will cost you around P500. If you want to go further, it will cost P1000 or higher.

You may also rent a motorbike per day. Rate is around P500.

Top Attractions in Catanduanes

There’s a lot of places to see in Catanduanes. Most blogs only talk about Twin Rock Beach Resort in Virac, Puraran, and Baras but there are more options out there. You can beach bum, island hop, surf, or trek across rolling hills. If you’re into history and culture, there are also old churches and lighthouses you can visit.

Here’s a general rundown of the best attractions in Catanduanes.

Virac is the capital city of Catanduanes. Here you can find city attractions including souvenir shops. Virac is also known for its beaches. The popular ones are the Twin Rock Beach Resort  in Igang and Mamangal Beach Resort in Balite.

To explore Virac, you can move around via public transpo or charter a private tricycle.

Virac is the jump-off point to other municipalities in Catanduanes: to Caramoran and Pandan (left) or Bato and Baras (right). From here, it’s easy to charter a habal-habal or tricycle to get to Bato or Baras.

Places to see:

  • City tour : Virac Cathedral, Museo de Catanduanes, Virac Viewing Deck, FIAT House Inspired Chapel, souvenir stores
  • Beaches : Twin Rock Beach, Mamangal Beach, Balite Beach, Marilima Beach, Talisoy Beach

Twin Rock Beach Resort in Virac, Catanduanes

Caramoran is located on the western side of Catanduanes. The main attraction in Caramoran is the Palumbanes Islands , specifically Bitaog Beach in Parongpong Island.

To get here, from Virac town proper ride a bus or van bound for Pandan and get off at Barangay Baybay in Caramoran. Travel time is 3 hours.

Trips from Virac to Pandan are from 9AM to 1PM only. From Pandan back to Virac, the earliest van schedule is 4AM and the latest schedule is 12noon – 1PM only, except on Fridays where there are vans leaving at 3PM.

Once you get to Caramoran, register at the tourism office. This is also near the port where you can proceed to island hopping. Rates for boat rental start at P1000-1500 for a small one.

  • Palumbanes Islands: Bitaog Beach (Parongpong Island), Tignob Island, Calabagio Island
  • Toytoy Beach
  • Hitoma Lake
  • Banban Falls
  • Guiamlong Falls
  • Natotoo Falls
  • Lintig Falls
  • Inalmasinan Falls
  • St. John the Baptist Parish
  • Campo Ermetanyo

Bitaog Beach in Palumbanes Island

Pandan is next to Caramoran.

The attractions here are close to each other. Cagnipa Rolling Hills is a scenic farmland. From here, you can see Carangyan Beach in the distance. You can also climb down to Tuwad-Tuwadan Natural Pool for a refreshing dip.

I don’t recommend going to the Hiyop Highlands because the trail consists of rough roads and there is nothing much to see there.

Bato is located on the north eastern side of Catanduanes. This is the closest municipality from Virac.

Here you can visit Bato Church and waterfalls. You can also head to Sakahon Beach which is the jump-off point to Bote Lighthouse. The trek to the lighthouse is steep and takes about 30 minutes. I suggest leaving your backpacks in your vehicle. Local kids normally volunteer to guide you to the lighthouse — don’t forget to give them a tip!

Another attraction in Bato is Poseidon Rock, located in the village of Carorian. This is a fairly new attraction, with unique rock formations and natural lagoons. There are also snorkeling sites nearby.

  • Bote Lighthouse and Sakahon Beach
  • Bato Church
  • Maribina Falls
  • Cagraray Falls
  • Poseidon Rock (located in the village of Carorian)

Just further ahead of Bato, you can find the municipality of Baras. It’s known for Binurong Point and Balacay Point, which are scenic pastoral cliffs. You can visit either area for sunrise viewing.

Binurong Point is the more popular one. It’s located within the private property of Kayandit Ranch. It requires an easy trek of about 20 minutes.

Aside from these, you can also find Puraran. Unbeknownst to many people Catanduanes is  famous for its great waves . Puraran is its main surfing spot. In fact, every October, Catanduanes holds an annual surfing competition, the Majestic Puraran Surfing Cup. Surfing months are July to October. Beginners can also visit from March to June.

  • Binurong Point
  • Balacay Point

You can go all the way up to Gigmoto to visit several waterfalls and beaches.

  • Nahulugan Falls
  • Dororian Falls
  • Beaches: Sicmil Beach, Biong Beach, Macalanhog Beach

Bagamanoc is one of the least visited places in Catanduanes, but it’s worth visiting if you have time.

Ilihan Point is one of the most iconic spots in this province. It’s a phallic-shaped rock located in Bagamanoc Bay. It is also called “Boto ni Kurakog” or Fertility Island.

  • Ilihan Point
  • Padre Falls

Here’s a map from the Catanduanes Tourism Board listing the current tourist attractions in Catanduanes.

Here’s a sample 5 days itinerary in Catanduanes.

Catanduanes is part of Bicol Region, so you can enjoy Bicolano delicacies such as laing and bicol express.

Seafood is also available throughout the province. There is an abundance of fresh fish, as well as shrimps, crabs, and lobsters.

The food here is very affordable!

Where to stay in Catanduanes

There’s a lot of options on places to stay in Catanduanes, depending on whether you want to book in a resort, hotel or homestay.

If you’re looking for a place to stay near the airport, we recommend Kemji Resort . It’s only 5 minutes away. It’s reasonably priced, with a pool and restaurant.

Here are the recommended hotels and resorts in Virac:

  • Casa Remedios Bed & Breakfast | Book discounted rooms here
  • Twin Rock Beach Resort | Book discounted rooms here

Here are the best resorts in Puraran:

  • Puraran Surf Beach Resort | Book discounted rooms here
  • Majestic Puraran Beach Resort | Book discounted rooms here

Coco Beach Resort is located just across the Palumbanes Islands. The owner, Ate Letty, can help you find a boat for island hopping. Accommodation is P300 per night. For meals, you can order in the resort or go to nearby eateries.

I highly recommend staying at Carangyan Beach Resort . It’s located across a small beach cove — it’s relaxing and a great place to swim and idle for the day. Rooms are available at P1500 (fan room) and P1800 (aircon).

Catanduanes is one of the cheapest provinces we’ve visited.

Here’s a summary of the major expenses:

  • You can drop by the Tourism Office in Virac for assistance once you arrive in Catanduanes.
  • Schedule of public vehicles especially to distant municipalities such as Pandan and Caramoran are limited. So do your research when planning your itinerary.
  • There is minimal mobile signal in certain areas in Catanduanes.

Is it allowed for the outsiders to go in catanduanes?

Katherine Cortes

What do you mean?

Salamat po ng marami for this detailed blog!

Thanks

Jennifer Galvan

Is fare to catanduanes included in your 4k budget?

Nope, I edited the text to clarify. Also pls note we traveled there back in 2016 pa and during our trip, habal-habal/tricycles do not have a standard rate so expect some adjustments when budgeting.

hi! is it possible na mag rent lang ng motorcycle mismo, yung kame yung magdadrive or habal type talaga? thanks

Pwede naman.

Kezia Sofia Francesca

Hi Kath and Hali! I’m a student studying in Catanduanes, and I hope you could help me because I chose to write an article about the island in a perspective asking, “why catanduanes isn’t THAT known” sort of way, especially in the point of view of people who are not native from the island like me. So I just wanted to ask the following questions, hoping you could help me in writing my paper :

1. Before coming to the island, what were your initial thoughts or ideas about catanduanes? 2. Why do you thinks that catanduanes is not that known or famous in other regions of the country especially in manila?

Your thoughts on these would really help, Thank you! and God bless!

Hi Kezia. I’ll answer you here instead of email.

1. As far as I remember (this trip was dated 2016), we didn’t really have any clear expectation about Catanduanes. We only that it’s “beautiful” from what other backpackers said and it’s where we can find the popular Binurong Point (often likened to Batanes). 2. There’s a lot of provinces in the PH that are not popular yet, Catanduanes is just one of them. You have to understand that the surge of local travel is a recent phenomenon. Catanduanes isn’t that “known” yet but this is starting to change now. Catanduanes though has a disadvantage in terms of commuting from Manila – unlike other places in Bicol which are easier to visit, you need to take an overnight bus and then a ferry to get to Catanduanes. If you’re a typical backpacker that only has 3-4 days to spare for traveling, this isn’t a good option. There are flights to Virac but the schedule is limited and can be expensive unless bought in a promo period. Also, Catanduanes may need more marketing for its tourism… Its geographic location renders it susceptible to strong typhoons, so it’s unlike other tourist attractions where the weather is usually good or at the very least more tolerable. (That saying, we dearly love Catanduanes and think it’s one of the best provinces in the country for traveling.)

I hope this helps. 🙂

Hello! Hoping you could answer. We’re planning to rent a car going to the east and west part of Catanduanes. Our trip is this coming May. We are group of 5. Do you think its possible for us to drive around the island? And is globe or smart LTE working all through out the island? We’re just planning to use waze or google map. Thanks!

Hi Meryl, I can’t remember how the signal was when we were in Catanduanes. I suggest asking the tourism office here – https://www.facebook.com/catanduanestourismpromotion/

Don’t count on internet. Outside Virac it’s very unreliable.

Hi! How much time will it take to island hop Palumbanes? and to tour Pandan? I was planning to squeeze the those two in one day. Hehe.

Depends on you. One day for those is doable, that’s what our friends did. 🙂

Hi meron ba kayo contact ng tour guide like habal sa Virac? tnx.

Hi, Gep. Sorry we didn’t get our driver’s number but you can always ask around.

mariaisquixotic

Catanduanes is a beauty that is so pure. Even if it’s always struck by typhoons during the rainy season, it still boasts of its wonder. I’m glad you found it as a happy place! Even if I’m from Albay and literally neighbors with the province, I haven’t explored it yet. Maybe next time though! Haha.

Btw, I noticed that you spelled Tabaco as Tobacco. I hope you could check it. 🙂

We read this super late! Must’ve been buried under all the comments. Thanks so much for pointing that out, changed it already. 🙂

Hi! To minimize hassle for land trip, you can book a bus ticket in bicolisarog.com for an rsl bus. You can leave your bags in there when you boarded the ferry and come back when the ferry arrives in san andres port. Fare is 825php for aircon bus. Hope this helps. Thanks for enjoying and promoting our happy island! 🙂

Mary Ann Clemente

Wow! Just P 4,000 for two people to tour Catanduanes? Count us in! I would try to take a plane though as I know how energy consuming it is to travel for 12 hours for a light sleeper like me. How I wish we have a drone by that time. Catanduanes really looks like Batanes.

It’s P4000 each for 2 people. I had to re-check that I got it right. 🙂 But yeah it really is cheap. Usually we spend about P5000+ each for a 4-day trip.

CATANDUANES: DIY TRAVEL GUIDE + ITINERARY

While Catanduanes remains largely uncharted explored by mass tourism, it has long been known as one of the best surfing spots in the Philippines.  Catanduanes ’ eastern shores is home to the “Majestics”, a surfing spot facing the Pacific Ocean.  But more than surfing, Catanduanes is slowly gaining attention because of its dramatic landscape and seascapes.  Rising tourist attractions in Catanduanes includes Binurong Point and Balacay Point that offers gorgeous views of the azure ocean lapping the green rolling hills.  Catanduanes also boast some of the finest beaches in the Philippines like Puraran Beach, Twin Rock Beach, Sakahon Beach, and Marilima Beach, among others.

If you’re planning on traveling to Catanduanes soon, here’s a sample itinerary that’s perfect for a long weekend getaway, feel free to tweak it.

WHAT'S IN THIS BLOG POST?

CATANDUANES ITINERARY: DAY 1 – BATO CATANDUANES TOUR

This sample budget is good for 2 persons traveling together.  Trip expenses doesn’t cover airfare or ferry + bus fare from Manila, and souvenirs. Regular roundtrip airfare starts at ₱ 5187, it can go lower during seat sale.  Otherwise, your next option is to take a bus from Manila to Tabaco (approximately 10 hours) and take a ferry or fast craft to Virac or San Andres ( ₱350) .

Also, for this Catanduanes itinerary:

  • DAY 1 – Resort is in Puraran Beach Baras. CHECK ROOM RATES HERE OR RESERVE HERE
  • Day 2 – 3 – Hotel in Virac, Catanduanes. CHECK ROOM RATES HERE

CATANDUANES BEACH

This Catanduanes itinerary assumes that you are traveling from Manila to Virac by plane.  Cebu Pacific flight from Manila leaves at 6:35 AM and estimated arrival in Virac Airport  at 7:45 AM.  Travel time is roughly 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Upon arrival at Virac Airport, you can hire a tricycle to your hotel in Virac, or Baras (Puraran) or wherever part of Virac.  Rates would vary depending on the location of your hotel.

But, to maximize your time, I recommend hiring a tricycle for 1 day tour upon your arrival and ask the driver to drop by at your hotel so you can leave your luggage first.  Rates depend on your haggling skill, but usually it’s ₱1,500 ($29 – €26) – ₱2,000 ($38 – €34) good for 2 – 3 persons, depending on the tourist spots in Catanduanes that you want to visit. For the sample Catanduanes itinerary above, rate is about ₱2,000 ($38 – €34) , good for 2 – 3 persons.

If you are arriving via Virac Port, there are jeepneys to Baras for ₱35 and UV Express to Baras for ₱100 per person in downtown Virac.  In Baras, you can then take a tricycle to your beach resort in Puraran for about ₱50. This will save you a few bucks.  You can talk to your tricycle driver regarding the Catanduanes tricycle tour.  Rate should be cheaper if you hire a tricycle in Baras to tour Bato tourist spots since the distance is closer compared to Virac.  Expect to pay around ₱1,000 ($19 – €17) – ₱1,500 ($29 – €26) good for 2 – 3 persons for a day tour and depending on the tourist spots that you want to visit.

For my sample Catanduanes itinerary above, for Day 1, best to stay in Puraran Beach and tour Bato for 1 whole day.

The top tourist spots in Bato that are included in the Day 1 itinerary are:

  • Binurong Point
  • Bote Lighthouse
  • Sakahon Beach
  • Poseidon Rock
  • Bato Church

You may also include a trip to Balacay Point, which is still part of Baras. Then end the day by chilling at Puraran Beach.

ALSO READ: CATANDUANES TOURIST SPOTS

catanduanes itinerary: day 2 –  baras + virac tour.

CATANDUANES Itinerary: sakahon beach

For Day 2 and Day 3, it is recommended to stay in Virac as it is closer to Virac Airport and Virac Port.

For the sample Catanduanes itinerary above, you can check out from your Puraran Beach Resort on Day 2, in the morning.  There are UV Express (₱100 – $2 – €2) and jeepneys (₱35 – $0.67 – €0.60) from Baras to Virac. But you can also opt to hire a tricycle and make a side trip to Maribina Falls  in Bato and Twin Rock Beach Resort in Virac. I’ll go for the tricycle rental to maximize the time. Expect to shell out approximately ₱800 ($15 – €14) – ₱1,000 ($19 – €17).

After visiting Maribina Falls and Twin Rock Beach Resort, it’s time to check-in at tour resort in Virac.  By then, it should be time for lunch.  Virac is peppered with restaurants and eateries, so you’ll have a lot of choices for dining.  After lunch, you can opt to rest, or  better yet, explore Virac tourist spots since you’re already there.

Below are some of the tourist attractions in downtown Virac. No need to hire a tricycle, you can just hail one and then ride to your preferred destination below. Regular fare is ₱ 10 ($0.19 – €0.17) per person.

  • Virac Museum
  • Virac Cathedral
  • Virac Viewing Deck
  • FIAT House Inspired Chapel

After your quick tour of Virac, you can catch the sunset at Virac Port, and have dinner before retiring to your hotel.

CATANDUANES ITINERARY:  DAY 3  – DEPARTURE

CATANDUANES travel guide

Day 3 is departure time.  If your headed to Virac Airport, your best bet is hiring a tricycle.  It’s about a 10 minute ride from downtown Virac, so fare shouldn’t cost you an arm and leg. Prepare around ₱150 ($3 – €3) – ₱200 ($4- €3).

But, if you’re taking the ferry to Tabaco from Virac Port, you can walk to the wharf from your hotel or take a tricycle for ₱ 10 ($0.19 – €0.17) per person.

CATANDUANES TRIP EXPENSES

So, there you go. That’s a sample 3 Day 2 Nights Catanduanes itinerary for budget travelers, perfect for a long weekend trip.  The above itinerary should cost you roughly ₱3,325 ($63.16 – €59.71) per person if you are a party of 2.  Airfare and ferry + bus fare not included in the calculation.  The sample budget  above can be higher if you opt to stay in a more expensive resort or hotel or dine in a fancy restaurant.

Catanduanes Island: A Travel Guide To The Happy Island Of The Philippines

catanduanes island diy travel guide

It’s been a dream to visit Catanduanes Island. I was supposed to visit the island around January 2021, but it was postponed during the pandemic.

Then that dream finally came true after a year of waiting. Restrictions on traveling domestically and internationally have become more lenient! I have waited for this moment. The feeling was unexplainable, but I knew from within that I was on cloud nine.

Going backpacking around Catanduanes Island has always been a dream. The island is known for its scenic mountains, white-sand beaches, and happy people. In my case, the main reason why Catanduanes Island really caught my interest, was due to its most popular tourist spot, Binurong Point, where its scenic views are often compared to Batanes Island .

In this travel guide, get to know more about Catanduanes Island, how to get there, and the things that the island has to offer.

Table of Contents

About Catanduanes Island

happy island catanduanes philippines

Located in the Bicol Region of Luzon, Catanduanes Island is the 12th largest island in the Philippines. In addition, Catanduanes is dubbed the “Land of the Howling Winds” due to the fact that strong typhoons hit the island every year. But it’s also known as “The Happy Island” because of the island’s friendly locals and its resilience in the face of typhoons every year.

Catanduanes has a great deal to offer. From its breathtaking views of the mountains to its amazing hidden waterfalls, awe-striking architectural designs of Spanish colonial churches, diverse culture, friendly locals, and untouched beauty of beaches. Furthermore, the island also annually celebrates “ The Abaca Festival ” to showcase the importance of abaca and its status as the main source of livelihood for the locals. It is also a celebration of the fiber industry and the products it produces, which is the primary material used in the handicrafts of Catanduanes and the entire Bicol region.

How to get to Catanduanes Island

There are a lot of options to get to the island. Here are the following:

From Manila, book a flight bound for Virac, Catanduanes (direct flight). The flight usually takes around an hour. On the other hand, direct flights heading to Catanduanes are usually expensive. But you are lucky if you score discounted or cheaper flights, especially when airline companies go on seat sales. You may book a flight via Cebu Pacific or Philippine Airlines.

From Manila, book a flight bound for Legazpi, Albay via Cebu Pacific or Philippine Airlines. This is another good option, especially if you plan on backpacking around the Bicol region. (Read my travel guide to the Bicol region ).Then, take a van heading to the SM Legaspi terminal. From there, take another van bound for the port. Once you arrive at the port, take a ferry heading to the Virac port. The ferry ride takes around 3 hours.

From Manila, buses from Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) are now available heading to Virac, Catanduanes. The one-way regular bus fare from PITX to Virac is around Php 1,350 and Php 950 for the economy (non-aircon) bus. Buses depart from the terminal at 4:30 p.m. daily and from Virac at 11 a.m. daily. You may find out more information on the Bicol Isarog website.

Getting around the island

The two most commonly used public transports on the island are the habal habal (single motorcycle) and the tricycle. It is very accessible to get around the island.

If you are staying in the main town (Virac), most of the eateries, stores, and cafes are very accessible.

Places to Visit Around Catanduanes Island

Based on our experience, my friend and I took a ferry to the island, and I didn’t regret taking this option. I’ve always imagined myself backpacking through the Bicol region. The ferry took us some time to get to the island, but it was all worth it. As we almost embarked on the island, I saw how huge the island is. It was really long and seemed to be really big from afar. Even the view from the ferry was amazing.

My friend and I stayed on the island for 3 days and 2 nights. With that, these are the places to visit on Catanduanes Island.

Bato Church

  • Bote Lighthouse

Maribina Falls

Binurong point, puraran beach, caramoan islands.

bato church catanduanes

The St. John the Baptist Church, more commonly known as “Bato Church,” is said to be the oldest church in the island province. This 19th-century church in Bato was built with mortar and coral limestone to withstand the strong storms that ravage the island every year. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) has designated this church as a historical marker in the province.

This amazing waterfall is also situated in the town of Bato. Named after the villages of Marinawa and Binanwaha, Maribina Falls is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the province.

catanduanes bicol travel guide

This is the main highlight of the trip. Binurong Point is one of the main tourist attractions in Catanduanes. Situated in the town of Baras, Binurong Point is definitely one of the best places to visit while on the island. The best time to visit the place is at sunrise.

bote lighthouse catanduanes island

Puraran Beach is the surfing capital of Catanduanes. You may come here after visiting Binurong Point and have lunch here. The beach boasts its fine, golden sand and peaceful vibe. This place is definitely an ideal spot for swimming, beach bumming, and surfing.

camarines sur island hopping tour

The Caramoan Islands are technically a part of Camarines Sur, they are located within an hour boat ride from Catanduanes. The Caramoan Islands are a great place to visit if you’re looking to get the most out of your vacation.

  • Find the best trips and experiences in the Philippines  for your travel itinerary

Catanduanes is located off the coast of the Bicol Region in the southern part of Luzon and faces the Pacific Ocean. Because of its location, the province is usually the first place in the Philippines to get battered by typhoons, and so the province is nicknamed the “Land of the Howling Winds.”

But don’t let that moniker fool you. Virac and its surrounding towns in Catanduanes have numerous exciting activities and attractions like pristine beaches, calm and peaceful fishing villages, beautiful waterfalls and caves, and gorgeous cathedrals and churches to visit and explore.

Popular day tours

Bohol chocolate hills countryside private tour with transfers & add-on loboc river cruise lunch, private el nido lio airport transfer to/from any hotel in el nido town palawan, bohol countryside tour chocolate hills to loboc river cruise lunch with hotel transfers.

The simple island life, where everybody knows everybody, and the smaller crowds in the many beaches on the island, also makes Virac, Catanduanes very attractive to travelers the world over.

In fact, Catanduanes is now also slowly being known as “The Happy Island,” because of its beautiful attractions and friendly people.

If you're planning a trip to Virac, Catanduanes, use this essential travel guide so you can plan for and make the most out of your trip to this beautiful, unspoiled island province.

Viewpoint of Catanduanes

The Philippines is a tropical country and only has two seasons, the wet and dry season. But being in the middle of the country’s typhoon belt, Virac (and the rest of Catanduanes) has no pronounced dry season; rather, it has about 12-15 rainy days a month on average.

There is a greater chance of rainfall and typhoons between October to February, so you may want to check weather reports regularly, and plan accordingly if you intend to travel there during these months.

Philippine Airlines flies direct from Manila to Legazpi

The fastest way to go to Virac is by plane but you can also travel by land or sea. Here are your travel options for each depending on your possible jump-off points:

This is the perfect option if you don’t want to travel for long hours or if you’re coming from outside the Philippines. From Virac Airport, you can take a 10-minute tricycle ride to the Virac town proper.

From Manila

As of this writing, only Cebu Pacific offers once a day direct flights to Virac to and from Manila. If you’re coming from Manila's  Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), flights to Virac Airport will take about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Alternatively, you can also fly from Manila to Legazpi, Albay, the province right next to Virac, Catanduanes. PAL  has daily flights from Manila to Legazpi and takes about an hour.

From Legazpi, you can take a 47-minute bus ride to Tabaco Port, board a ferry to San Andres Port in Catanduanes with a travel time of 1 hour 30 minutes, then take a jeepney to Virac town proper.

If you’re coming from Cebu or other destinations in Visayas, flights from Mactan International Airport in Cebu to Legazpi Airport in Albay will take about 1 hour and 10 minutes.

From International Airports

Almost all major international carriers make stops at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila. If you’re coming from outside of the Philippines, you can fly straight to Manila, then take a connecting flight to either Legazpi Airport in Albay or straight to Virac Airport in Catanduanes.

Land travel is a cheaper alternative than riding a plane but expect to be on the road for long hours.

Bicol Isarog Bus Lines regularly ply the Manila-Virac route. Trips are usually on overnight sleeper buses, as it takes roughly 18 hours by bus from Manila to Virac. You can catch a Bicol Isarog bus to Virac at their EDSA Cubao terminal.

Victory Liner also has a regular overnight trip from Manila to Virac. You can catch a Victory Liner bus to Virac at their Pasay City terminal.

By Ferry

If you don’t mind even longer hours of journey than land travel, you can hop on a ferry from the Port of Manila in Tondo to Cebu City. From there, you can take a ferry to Masbate City, Masbate, then transfer to another ferry bound for Legazpi, Albay.

Upon arriving in Legazpi, you can take a bus to Tabaco Port, and then board a fast craft ferry to Virac Port. From Virac Port, you can take a tricycle to town. Total travel time can take anywhere from 22-25 hours.

Tricycle bringing travelers around the Catanduanes neigborhood

You can easily get around Virac and its nearby towns by renting a van or tricycle.

If you would rather take public transportation, Virac has a network of tricycles, jeepneys, multicabs, and buses that can help you get around within the town and around Catanduanes island.

The town has a bus and jeepney terminal that has several daily departures from Virac to different towns around the island.

There are no 5-star accommodations in Virac, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be hard-pressed to find decent hotels.

If you want to make Virac town proper your home base during your visit to Catanduanes, here are some of the best hotels and resorts within the town proper that you can check out based on your budget and itinerary.

Breathe in the Fresh Air at Virac’s Magnificent Viewpoints

View of the ocean from Binurong Point, Catanduanes

Picturesque viewpoints in Virac and the rest of Catanduanes are not limited to its beaches. Hike up to Binurong Point to see the waves from the Pacific Ocean crash onto the rocky cliffs.

Another beautiful spot that offers a great view of where the sky meets the land and the sea is at Balacay Point in Baras town.

You can also make a stop at the PAGASA Weather Radar Station in Bato town. Located on top of a hill, the weather station also offers a spectacular view of Cabugao Bay and the islets in its waters.

Spicy pork in coconut milk, commonly called Bicol Express

Swimming, surfing and hiking will make you hungry—but in Virac, you will never go hungry. Catanduanes is part of the Bicol Region, a region well-known for its spicy cuisine, and most Virac restaurants and eateries serve these types of dishes.

Make sure to try the Bicolano staples laing and Bicol Express cooked in gata (coconut milk). One of Virac’s highly-recommended restaurants is Sunday Blossoms, where you can order the classic Bicol Express. Other Filipino dishes such as kare-kare and caldereta are also available.

Fresh seafood is also a must-try when you visit Virac. Crab, fish, shrimp, and lobster are available throughout the province depending on the season. But in Virac, your go-to place for the best seafood is at Sea Breeze Restaurant.

Craving for coffee? Café de Au brews locally grown and roasted beans, so you can be sure that your coffee is made from the best quality beans in the province.

You can also try their very popular Ala Nachos, which are actually made from fried spring roll wrappers. Desserts at Sunday Blossoms are not to be missed as well.

1. If you’re visiting Virac beaches, make sure to bring snacks/meals with you, especially if you plan to spend the whole day there. A lot of the smaller beaches do not have any establishments.

2. Before heading out of Virac town proper, make sure you bring all your essentials (water bottle, snacks, change of clothes, sunblock, hats, etc.) and withdraw enough cash to cover your trips. There are no ATMs in the smaller towns.

3. As you will be spending a lot of time outdoors when visiting Virac, make sure to always put on sunblock whenever you head out, and reapply after you swim!

To get the most out of your visit to Virac, Catanduanes, we recommend that you stay for at least three full days. 20 Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Catanduanes (Rolling Hills, Beaches & More)

 alt=

I had a realization a few years ago when I visited Catanduanes: it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and underrated provinces in the Philippines.

Often referred to as the “Happy Island,” Catanduanes boasts breathtaking nature, pristine beaches, stunning landscapes, and warm-hearted locals. In earlier times, the province was called the “Land of the Howling Winds.” Situated off the coast of the Bicol region and facing the Pacific Ocean, it’s a common path for typhoons, hence the historical name.

However, the residents, known as Catandunganons, aspire for their home to be recognized for more than just its weather challenges. With its verdant rolling hills, untouched beaches, and rich natural beauty, Catanduanes is a destination worth exploring, and I was fortunate to experience its charm.

Here are some reasons why you should consider a visit to this island. Below is a list of the top tourist spots we explored during our trip to the Happy Island.

1. Batag Beach

During our first day in Catanduanes, we explored the capital town of Virac. I felt that touring Virac is already enough for our Catanduanes trip. We get the comforts of living in a small city and yet it’s also very close to nature and beaches!

After exploring the downtown area, we traveled for a few minutes to the coastal area until reaching Batag beach. It’s a stretch of cream-colored beach perfect for relaxation that we all, city dwellers, badly needed.

Batag Beach Catanduanes

That’s Mt. Mayon.

At the end of the pristine beach, there is a rock formation suitable for more adventurous travelers. This spot is just perfect for those Instagrammable photos too! You can never go wrong with a backdrop of nature, right?

After exploring the beach, we rested in one of the cottages. Batag Beach is open to the public, so there’s no entrance fee. However, if you’re with family and friends, you can rent one of the cottages for a minimal fee of 250 pesos.

2. Talisoy Beach

After enjoying the pristine beauty of Batag Beach, we traveled for less than five minutes to Talisoy Beach.

This beach piqued my curiosity. It is located in a small cove, surrounded by lush greenery and rock formations. Although it’s open to the public, it retains a sense of seclusion and privacy, which people living in big cities will appreciate.

There’s a part of the beach that serves as a turtle sanctuary. How wonderful is that, right? It’s heartening to see people exert such tremendous effort to protect marine species and our environment.

Talisoy Beach

As we walked along the beach, we noticed something on the rock formation. The edge of it resembles a replica of Jesus’ face. In the Philippines where the majority are Catholics, this holds significant meaning. This resemblance is why Talisoy Beach is sometimes referred to as Jesus Face Beach.

3. Twin Rock Beach / Igang Beach

After the beach-hopping, we had our lunch at Twin Rock Beach Resort, located in the capital of Virac. The locals also call this Igang Beach.

They served us some of the most delicious Bicolano dishes, and also my personal favorites like Laing and Bicol Express . We enjoyed our lunch while looking at the relaxing views of the beach and the famous twin rocks from afar.

Twin Rock Beach

It’s impossible not to notice the stunning rock formations just a few meters off the shore. The two islets are the main attractions from where the owners got the inspiration for the resort’s name.

Overall, it was a calm and relaxing experience overlooking the pristine beach with creamy white sand. Twin Rock resort is also one of the most developed resorts on the island, so you know what to do once you visit Catandaunes.

4. Summit View Park

You can witness an awesome sea of clouds in Catanduanes without strenuous hiking. Yes, you just have to travel for about an hour from Virac going to the municipality of Viga . Upon entering the town, you’ll witness the famous Summit View Park.

Summit View Park

Just climb the stairs for a few steps and you will experience the stunning sea of clouds. We went there early in the morning just to witness the breathtaking view. The best part of our experience is when the local officials and the Catanduanes tourism office prepared breakfast at the summit. It was definitely one of my most memorable experiences in Catanduanes.

So if you happen to be on the island, travel to Viga and witness the beauty of the town.

5. Lolong Point Lighthouse

After breakfast, we went straight to the municipality of Panganiban for more adventures. A boat was waiting for us to take us to explore Panay island. It’s an island off the coast f the province’s eastern part.

We traveled for about 30 minutes by boat until we reached the tip part of the island. A lighthouse was visible as we sailed closer to the shore. This is Lolong Point Lighthouse.

Lolong Point Lighthouse Catanduanes

Lolong Point Lighthouse

Lolong Point Lighthouse Catanduanes

Siempre, papahuli paba naman ako? siempre kailangan ng selfie. LOL!

The beach itself is also a beauty of its own. They call it Kumagat Beach. The Panganiban tourism office prepared a brunch for us. It’s a type of kakanin with sauce. It was delicious. We stayed for a few minutes relaxing by the beach until it was time for us to hike a little to visit Lolong Point Lighthouse.

It was just a few minutes of hiking but the sun was unforgiving so be prepared just in case. Don’t forget your sunscreen , okay?

But once we arrived at the lighthouse, it was all worth it. We witnessed a 360-degree view of the entire island and the Pacific ocean. It was a perfect chance for picture taking or simply savoring the calm and relaxing vibe of the ocean. If you want to visit Lolong Point Lighthouse, it’s much better to coordinate with the Municipal Tourism Office.

6. Museo de Catanduanes

When you’re in the capital town of Catanduanes, allot some time to check out Museo de Catanduanes. We had a chance to visit the museum during our 5-day trip in the province. This is located in the same building where the Tourism office is located.

Museo de Catanduanes

The museum features some old artifacts, memorabilia, and also products made from Catanduanes, especially Abaca. It’s nice to know more about Catanduanes’ history and heritage before even exploring it. It will give the right knowledge and perspective about the Catandunganons.

7. Palestina Rolling Hills

We had our lunch on a floating cottage, feasting on some delicious dishes like humba and lots of seafood.

After that, the local tourism office of Bagamanoc arrived and brought us to another awesome tourist destination in the province. We traveled for a few minutes by boat then hiked for another 15 minutes going on top of the hills.

catanduanes tour package 2022

Once we arrived at the summit, we were welcomed by an awesome view of rolling hills, nature, and the blue ocean. “This is Palestina Rolling Hills”, the Catanduanes Tourism staff said.

Looking below these rolling hills are stunning and pristine beaches. One of these is Tabing beach which also has a mini cave that can serve as protection from the scorching heat of the sun.

8. Loran Beach

After enjoying Catanduances’ rolling hills, what a great way to end the day relaxing on an untouched beach. Before heading to the mainland, we made a side trip to Loran beach located on the other side of Panay Island.

Loran Beach

Aside from the beach, a few steps away and you can visit the old Loran station, a former US coastguard complex in the 50s and 60s located on top of a hill in Bagamanoc . This was once a site for crews of the US Coast Guard providing American submarines and ships with a lower frequency for long-range navigation. Now, it’s just an abandoned structure, but a nice way to get a glimpse of the place’s history.

9. Boto ni Kurakog

Off the coast of Bagamanoc, you’ll witness an interesting rock formation. And when you get the chance to get closer to it when you ride a boat, you’d realize that it looks like a male genital. Haha, The locals call this Boto ni Kurakog. Boto is a Bicolano word for penis and Kurakog? You might be asking who is he.

Boto ni Kurakog 2

Is this looks familiar to you? LOL

Well, legend has it that Kurakog was a giant who fell in love with a mortal. Since the woman’s parents were against it, she committed suicide which made him really depressed. He eventually died and part of his intimate body appeared in the middle of the sea which is now known as Boto ni Kurakog. There are many versions of this story, so don’t be surprised if you hear a slightly different one.

READ THE FULL BLOG POST: Boto ni Kurakog in Catanduanes

10. Paday Falls

Paday Falls is just one of the many awesome waterfalls in the province. Located in Brgy. Basak in Bagamanoc, it is a popular hangout for many tourists and even locals because of its close easy access to the main road. You don’t need any strenuous hike, unlike other waterfalls in the country.

Paday Falls

A few minutes of land travel to Bagamanoc proper, then a 5-minute walk, and you’ll arrive at Paday Falls. There are cottages that you rent for a minimal fee. Just enjoying the view of the waterfalls is already a relaxing experience, what more if you decide to take a dip in its cold water? This is highly recommended when you visit the town of Bagamanoc.

11. Sakahon Beach

Early in the morning, we traveled all the way to the town of Bato to visit a beach. Locals call it Sakahon beach. Aside from the nature and pristine beach, the best part is the warm welcome from the local officials. They even prepared a breakfast filled with local delicacies!

It was delicious and so filling, enough to give us energy throughout the day.

Sakahon Beach

This is delicious.

Catanduanes Delicacy

We then explored Sakahon Beach. No wonder more and more beachgoers enjoy this piece of nature. It’s peaceful and uncrowded. It has clear water and fine sand too.

I would love to spend more time there, but we still have to go to Baras, our next destination.

12. Binurong Point

Binurong Point is the most popular Catanduanes tourist spot on social media with all its stunning rolling hills and landscapes. Some are even saying that this is the Batanes of Bicol, but you know Binurong Point is a beauty of its own.

Binurong point

Once we arrived at the registration area, we hiked for about 30 minutes going to Binurong Point. A guide is required to ensure the safety of the group. It’s also an income opportunity for many locals in the area. We were quite surprised that the guide assigned to us was a woman, a mother. It’s my bad that I forgot her name but we had a nice photo together. She was a nice and helpful guide, trying to earn a living for her family and help her husband who is a fisherman.

Well, once we arrived at Binurong Point, I was speechless for a while. I was just silently staring at this glorious beauty of nature. When you’re in Binurong Point, all you’d do is just enjoy the beauty in front of you. Sometimes, you get to stare at some cows, but most of the time, you’d just enjoy the calmness and serenity that this palace brings.

13. Puraran Beach

After our hike to Binurong Point, we then traveled to experience another beach. This time it’s a surfing destination, the popular Puraran Beach.

But before that, we first made a quick stopover at Alon Surf Stay to have a quick brunch. We witnessed the stunning view of the Puraran beach from the resort. It was also nice of them to treat us to sweet and tasty pancakes.

Alon Surf Stay

The view from Alon Surf Stay.

Puraran Beach

Then, it was time to explore Puraran beach. It was obvious why this is a popular surfing spot. The sound of strong waves crashing through the shore was the dominant sound in the area. What a perfect way to chill at the cottages while enjoying the breeze from the ocean.

We had a seafood-packed lunch too. Delicious!

14. Hiyop Highlands

On our last day in Catanduanes, we traveled for less than an hour from Virac to experience another rolling hills. This is Hiyop Highlands located in Pandan, the northern part of Catanduanes.

Hiyop Highlands

Once we arrived, there were fences all over the place, an indication that the majority are actually private property. But we were able to find a good spot to enter and even enjoy the hills and the view.

At the end of the cliff is a stunning view of the beach below. Oh man, with so many beautiful places that we explored in Catanduanes, this has got to be one of the best. Here are the photos.

Hiyop Highlands

Cute and friendly local kid. Kamusta na kaya sya? 😉

15. Carangyan Beach

It was time to have lunch by the beach. We then went straight to Carangyan Beach Resort , one of the famous resorts in Pandan. We had some seafood for lunch and did our own versions of siesta by the beach.

Carangyan Beach

Luckily, we had a lot of time to spend at the resort. It was also a chance for us to swim and enjoy everything. Just like most of the beaches that we explored in Catanduanes, Carangyan Beach is raw and untouched. The view of some islets makes the experience extra special.

16. Delicia’s Farm

Before even the farm-to-table phenomenon became popular, Catanduanes already has its own – It’s Delicia’s Farm. Also located in Pandan , Catanduanes.

It’s a combination of a resort, farm, and restaurant. The food is of course organic and sourced from the farm. We had a chance to talk with the owner. He was such a joy to talk to. He also had a regular job but then decided to quit to put up this farm. I can still remember his questions to us during our chat. “Do you really want to work 9 to 5 for the rest of your life?”

Delicia’s Farm

Of course, most people in our group are employees from the tourism and LGU so it’s obvious what would be their possible answers, right? But for me who recently quit my corporate job at that time, I have the same answer as him.

They served us a lot of food like vegetables and roasted chicken. Aside from the farm, there’s also a small pool to accommodate guests.

17. Cagnipa Rolling Hills

“Save the best for last.” This is exactly what I feel when we visited our last spot for the day. We trekked a little passing through some hills until we reached the stunning Cagnipa rolling hills.

Cayniba Rolling Hills

Cayniba Rolling Hills

Cayniba Rolling Hills

I thought that I’ve seen enough of Catanduanes. I thought that we’d already witnessed the most beautiful views, but we were wrong. Cagnipa Rolling Hills’ beauty is jaw-dropping. We were there just a few minutes before sunset, so we witnessed a dramatic and stunning scenery as the last rays of the sun bid goodbye to the ocean.

What a great way to end our day exploring the province.

18. Tuwad Tuwadan Lagoon

Just near the Cagnipa Rolling Hills, there’s a rugged stair by the end of the cliff leading to the rock formations below going to a crystal clear blue lagoon.

Tuwad tuwadan Lagoon was named as such because according to some stories, you need to make this “ tuwad ” position, bending over, as you pass through the steep stairs. We were lucky that when we visited, there were already some cemented parts. Imagine going to this place years ago, you really need all the courage for this adventure.

Tuwad Tuwadan Lagoon

Below is a blue lagoon that looks like a swimming pool perfectly crafted by nature to blend with the rugged features. Some couldn’t resist the temptation, they finally gave in to the invite and took a dip into the lagoon. As for me, who is not a good swimmer, I just enjoyed the view. It was also a chance for us to take some awesome photos.

19. Cagnipa Beach & Cove

From the top of Cagnipa Rolling Hills, you’ll witness Cagnipa Beach and Cove. Located in Brgy. Balognonan, Cagnipa beach is secluded and can only be reached by motorbike or boat. But you once arrive there, everything is worth it.

With its azure and clear water, this is a perfect place to relax and commune with nature. If you want some adventure, you can snorkel and witness the abundant marine life too.

20. Virac and the Abaca Festival

The capital town of Virac is a charm in itself. It’s laidback but it offers you also the comforts of having access to delicious food and some leisure activities. Staying in Virac for a couple of days before embarking on a journey to the province is also a nice experience.

One of the best times to visit Virac is in the 4th week of May during the celebration of Abaca festival . It’s the main product of the province and during this time Catandunganons celebrate the bountiful harvest of Abaca and also the blessings that come with it.

Abaca Festival

Trade Fairs, Street dance, and Flores De Mayo featuring gowns made from Abaca are some of the events that you can expect during the festival.

So there you have it, these are the best tourist spots that I visited in Catanduanes when I explored the province. I know that there’s still a lot to explore, share your comments and recommendation below. Who knows, I might come back to Catanduanes and continue exploring this island wonder.
