Chappelle made headlines when a man attempted to attack him onstage during a 2022 show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. That man was later sentenced to 270 days in jail .

“He refuses to allow last night’s incident to overshadow the magic of this historic moment,” his rep said of Chappelle in a statement after the incident, while noting the show tied him with comedy troupe Monty Python as the comedians who have headlined the most performances at the Hollywood Bowl.

Drew Weisholtz is a reporter for TODAY Digital, focusing on pop culture, nostalgia and trending stories. He has seen every episode of “Saved by the Bell” at least 50 times, longs to perfect the crane kick from “The Karate Kid” and performs stand-up comedy, while also cheering on the New York Yankees and New York Giants. A graduate of Rutgers University, he is the married father of two kids who believe he is ridiculous.

Chappelle has been a controversial figure following his 2021 Netflix special “The Closer,” in which he made jokes about transgender people, leading to  company walkouts  and protests last October. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos originally defended Chappelle, saying in statement that the comedian is “one of the most popular stand-ups today” and “as with our other talent, we work hard to support their creative freedom — even though this means there will always be content on Netflix some people believe is harmful.” Sarandos ultimately said he “screwed up” in his reaction to the Chappelle backlash.

The comedian made headlines again in 2022 when he was attacked on stage  while performing a comedy set during the Netflix Is a Joke festival in Los Angeles.

Review: Dave Chappelle at RAC Arena

Dave Chappelle @ RAC Arena Thursday, February 2, 2023

Thousands of fans converged on RAC Arena in Perth last night for the first date of Dave Chappelle’s 2023 national Australian arena tour.

It’s been eight years since Chappelle has been in town, and with a sold-out arena eagerly anticipating showtime, the nervous energy began building from early evening.

Upon arrival, it was delightfully surreal to observe everyone surrendering their phones and digital devices as a condition of entry to the show. As a society so dependent on our devices these days, some people looked comfortable and liberated as a result, while others seemed to be twitching anxiously as though they had lost a limb.

Whether this had been orchestrated for engagement and immersion purposes, or in efforts to keep the night’s content from breaching the walls of the arena is not completely clear, but with the presence of multi-angle professional cameras perched around all angles of the stage, you can expect the tour will form the basis of an upcoming Netflix special.

The stage itself was strategically placed in the centre of the Arena floor. Directly overhead hung a four-way jumbo-vision covering the comedy pulpit below to ensure even those sitting way up in the nose bleeds could have the best view possible. DJ Trauma , Chappelle’s personal touring DJ, was perching on the south side and warmed up the crowd with hip-hop classics and 80s chart hits as punters trickled in from the lobby bars armed with their max-limit of allowed drinks.

The biggest surprise, and possibly the most sensational performance of the evening, was the announcement of special guest comedian and famed roast-master himself, Jeff Ross . Delivered to the stage via an array of security, Ross took to the stage wielding his microphone like a weapon as he instantly ripped into Kanye West in Hitler’s bunker, Harry and Meagan’s latest Netflix special, gynaecologists and more.

Ross, a comedic master and headliner in his own right, went right where you would expect him to go – gritty, shocking, and gut-punchingly hilarious. Nothing was off limits as he ended his perfectly-timed set with his bit about the Royal family’s attitudes towards race, which then segued into the bedroom antics of the recently deceased Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip.

Chappelle Show regular Donnell Rawlings was up next for a guest set, but Jeff Ross proved a hard act to follow, and returned to the platform soon afterward for some quick-fire comedy roasting of a group of brave volunteers from the crowd, eager to be insulted by the icon.

Displayed on the jumbo-vision hanging above was the ominous red “N” symbol along with a loud Netflix ‘Ta-Dum,’ which then morphed into the perceived title of the evening’s special “ LUNATIC MANIFESTO .”

With lights now dimmed, the capacity crowd rose to their feet, knowing the main even was next. DJ Trauma dropped the classic O.D.B. track Shimmy Shimmy Ya as Dave Chappelle then hit the arena, calmly taking drags from his lit smoke whilst being escorted and ushered by an army of security though the makeshift pathway of bodies like a President on a re-election tour. The carefully-cultivated atmosphere felt like a sporting event, a concert, or even a cage-match (with life ironically imitating art due to events that were to unfold later).

Chappelle was immediately right at home with the crowd and began delivering his expertly-crafted material like an artist at the top of their game. Riffing off the spectators in the front rows seated around his feet, he told tales of going to Floyd Mayweather’s strip club whilst high on shrooms and mistakenly asking for $15K in tipping dollars.

Ironically, it was around the exact moment that Chappelle’s material transitioned into how he was tackled on stage whilst performing at the Hollywood Bowl in 2022, that a loudly audible commotion was heard coming from the back tiers of the arena, as a couple of unruly types (aka drunk bogans) thought it would be the perfect time to throw down against one another. Whilst Chappelle did pause momentarily to ask what was up, he simply lit up another smoke and moved ahead with his material unabated, before asking for a drink to be delivered to him on stage.

Controversial to some and hilarious to others, Chappelle remains a staunch defender of his comedy, and comedy in general, as the purest form of art and the embodiment of free-speech. Seeing him deliver such a well-executed masterclass showed why he is regarded by many as the GOAT of stand-up comedy.

There is no denying that turning stand-up comedy into such an unforgettable national arena show is no easy feat, but there’s also no denying that there is one and only Dave Chappelle.

Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock bring tour to Memphis: Here's everything you need to know

Portrait of Bob Mehr

Memphians will have a rare chance to witness a historic comedy summit, as standup legends Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock team up for a co-headlining tour that will hit Downtown’s FedExForum on Monday night.

The show — one of only a handful of current arena dates Chapelle and Rock have announced for the U.S. — will bring two of the nimblest comic minds of their generation to Memphis.

Here's what to know before you go.

Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle: Excitement and controversy

Longtime peers and admirers of each other’s comedy, Chappelle and Rock first joined forces last fall to much anticipation, with a joint tour of the U.K. They followed up with a short run of the Western U.S. in December . The current tour, which kicks off Jan. 20 in Oklahoma City, will see Rock and Chappelle play a total of five dates in cities across Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama and South Carolina.

Remembering Gangsta Boo: Memphis rapper's 'influence is incalculable'

Rock's and Chappelle’s recent careers have been marked by controversy. Last March, Rock was the victim of the slap heard 'round world, when actor Will Smith walked onstage during the Academy Awards and smacked the comedian across the face in response to a joke Rock made about Smith's wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith. Meanwhile, Chappelle placed himself within a media firestorm , attracting criticism for jokes on "Saturday Night Live" and on other stages that some people condemned as anti-Semitic and transphobic.

Over the years, Rock and Chappelle have become known for cannily exposing, diagnosing and lampooning political, racial and cultural hypocrisy and identity, building on the foundation of such predecessors as Richard Pryor and George Carlin.

A 'unique' tour

The material from the tour has been closely guarded — likely because both men are working on new standup specials for 2023 — with a press release ahead of the show announcing that “any jokes and sketches delivered during (the) performance... may not be copied, translated, transmitted, displayed, distributed, or reproduced verbatim" without express prior consent from Pilot Boy Productions, a film and TV production company founded by Chappelle. However, a few reviews of the pair’s European tour dates did surface, offering look at how the Rock/Chappelle pairing might play.

Bruce Dessau of London’s Evening Standard noted that Rock and Chappelle’s O2 arena date was “a flawed yet unique encounter with two comedy titans.”

“Rock’s material on race was strong and maybe no surprise his set felt more polished as he has been touring for a while,” wrote Dessau, noting however that, “Chappelle was the more muscular in every sense of the word, smoking and stepping back to laugh at his punchlines even when they were not quite as razor sharp as they could have been.”

A review of the pair’s Liverpool show by The Guardian’s Brian Logan noted that “Rock’s outlook is not always the freshest. He admits as much here and makes an effort, I think, to soften the harder edges of his occasional chauvinism. Chappelle shares many of the older comic’s assumptions... but makes no apology for it. Rock sees the funny side of male behavior; Chappelle, the alpha ne plus alpha, celebrates and even solemnizes it. See a closing routine in which, all joking apart, he holds up the Rock v Will Smith fracas as an emblem of maleness: 'This is what men do.’” Logan added, “That’s Chappelle for you: no comic is so skilled at hanging you from their every word, none can switch so seamlessly from preaching to comedy then back again. But the charisma isn’t always backed up by strong material.”

Chappelle/Rock show a no phone zone

As has become the custom with certain bigger shows — especially comedy events, where standups are working out material — the Chappelle/Rock date will be a phone-free experience.

According to FedExForum, “the use of phones, smart watches and accessories will not be permitted in the performance space. Upon arrival at the venue, all phones, smart watches and accessories will be secured in individual Yondr pouches that will be opened at the end of the event. Guests will maintain possession of their devices at all times and can access them throughout the event only in designated Phone Use Areas within the venue. All devices will be re-secured in Yondr pouches before returning to the performance space. Anyone seen using a during the performance will be escorted out of the venue by security.”

An expected sellout at FedExForum

Although the show was only announced in early January, most of the tickets sold instantly given the unique nature of the pairing.

As of Tuesday, the bulk of the lower bowl seating is gone — though a few platinum ticket options near the stage (ranging from $396 to $546) remain. A larger number of upper level tickets, costing $96.50 are available, for the moment. But the event is expected to sell out before showtime. To purchase tickets, go to Ticketmaster.com .

Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle set to perform third co-headlining tour following recent controversies

Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle are giving fans an encore, with the comedians heading out on the road together for another joint headlining tour.

The tour, which kicks off Jan. 20 in Oklahoma City , will see Rock and Chappelle play five dates in cities across Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama and South Carolina. Tickets for the tour go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at ticketmaster.com .

The two previously headlined a tour together in December 2022 , performing in San Diego, San Francisco and Phoenix. They also toured the U.K. in September of that same year.

Rock and Chappelle have become known for their comic routines that cannily expose, diagnose and lampoon political, racial and cultural hypocrisy and identity, building on the foundation of such predecessors as Richard Pryor and George Carlin .

Man who attacked Dave Chappelle at Netflix festival sentenced to 270 days in jail

In 2022, however, both men were in the headlines in association with various controversies.

Last March, Rock was the victim of the slap heard 'round world , when actor Will Smith walked onstage during the Academy Awards and smacked the comedian across the face in response to a joke Rock made about Smith's wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith .

Meanwhile, Chappelle placed himself within a media firestorm, attracting criticism for jokes on "Saturday Night Live" and on other stages that some people condemned as anti-Semitic and transphobic .

These incidents explain why a press release announcing the show contains unusually strong wording about the prohibition of cellphones and the ownership "rights." While concertgoers "maintain possession of their phones throughout the night," all phones and smart watches are "secured in Yondr pouches that will be unlocked at the end of the show."

"No cellphones, cameras or recording devices will be allowed at this show," states the press release, from Live Nation Entertainment. "Anyone caught with a cellphone in the venue will be immediately ejected."

On ownership rights, the release states that "any jokes and sketches delivered during (the) performance...may not be copied, translated, transmitted, displayed, distributed, or reproduced verbatim" without express prior consent from Pilot Boy Productions, a film and TV production company founded by Chappelle.

The release continues: "Any Use of the Materials without the express prior written consent of Pilot Boy Productions, Inc. is strictly prohibited and shall be subject to all available legal remedies, whether in equity or at law at the cost of anyone who violates this prohibition."

Dave chappelle has 8 summer shows lined up. how much are tickets.

Dave Chappelle performs stand-up comedy onstage.

After a little less than a month away from the stage, Dave Chappelle is returning to the road from June 30 through Aug. 2 at arenas and…cornfields.

While there’s no word yet on what the controversial Mark Twain Prize winner will say onstage on the run of shows — he’s been known to spout off transphobic and anti-Semitic material in Netflix specials and “Saturday Night Live” monologues over the past few years — we do know that tickets are available for all eight gigs .

None are particularly cheap though .

At the time of publication, the cheapest tickets we could see to find Chappelle live this summer was $78 before fees on Vivid Seats for his July 12 San Antonio show.

That doesn’t sound so bad.

However, if you’re hoping to catch the funnyman at the Wirrig Pavilion in his hometown Yellow Springs, OH — the aforementioned cornfield shows — the best price on tickets around are a whopping $1,696 before fees .

Those are prices that would make even Taylor Swift fans think twice.

Still, it’s hard to put a price on seeing the self-proclaimed GOAT do his thing in person.

Plus, who knows? The “Half Baked” star might even bring Elon Musk onstage again.

Want to catch the always unpredictable Chappelle live these next few months?

Here’s everything you need to know and more.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

Dave Chappelle 2023 tour schedule

A complete calendar of all upcoming Dave Chappelle tour dates, venues and links to the cheapest tickets available can be found below.

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

No cellphones, cameras, or recording devices will be allowed at this show.
