Camping in Dalat – 6 unique locations & Camping Guide

Camping in Dalat is amazing and one of the best things to do here. Of course, you have to like the feeling of sleeping in a tent with limited facilities around you, but being right in the nature makes it very rewarding. If you are really into wild camping, this is the place to be. In fact, Dalat is one of the best places for camping in Vietnam .

Continue reading if you want to now the best spots for camping in Dalat and information how to arrange your camping trip.

How to organize camping in Dalat?

You have three options for camping in Dalat:

1. Camping tour

The most recommended way of camping in Dalat is with a tour. The local guides here know the rules, the best and most beautiful places where you can camp and one of the most important things: they arrange all the camping gear and the food. So you can just enjoy camping, without having to find a place and arrange the things.

An added advantage is that you can also arrange other activities with the guides, such as hiking and kayaking.

2. Book a campsite

Camping is becoming more and more popular in Vietnam and Dalat is without a doubt the frontrunner. This has ensured that camping sites have also been created in addition to camping tours. Perhaps a little less adventurous than going camping with a tour, but just as cozy.

As an extra bonus, with some of the camping sites you also have the option of glamping, or luxury camping. Sleeping in a tent in beautiful nature, but with a real bed, nice decoration and sometimes also modern facilities.

3. Camping by yourself

Last option is not the most convenient option, but it is possible. You can go camping by yourself, however, there are not many places to rent camping gear in Dalat and you would not buy it for 1 or 2 time use either or carry camping equipment with you through your whole Vietnam trip.

Renting a 2-person tent should cost from 100,000 VND a day. Make sure it includes a mat for the ground, because at night it can get cold. Other equipment to rent are sleeping bag, lights and cooking equipment. Food can be easily bought at the supermarket or local market.

If you want to keep some freedom of wild camping, but not too organized, speak to one of the guides, they can be quite flexible. Discuss where you want to camp and they will take care of all the gear and even the food. This gives you a little more freedom if you want to, but you don’t have to arrange the camping gear yourself.

Best time to go camping in Dalat

The best time to go camping in Dalat is during the dry season from November to March. Around this time of the year, the weather is great for camping, with warm temperatures and almost no rain. Temperatures during this time of the year are usually between 20 and 30 degree Celsius, but can drop at night to around 10 degree.

Tips for camping in Dalat

  • Check the weather in advanced . Like any camping trip, constant rain can make the experience a lot less.
  • Bring the right clothes . When you go on a tour you don’t have to arrange camping gear yourself, but there are a few things you should bring with you. Such as good walking shoes if you also go for long walks. Swimwear for a swim in a local lake if needed. Clothes against the rain and sun. During the day it can be hot, so you need light clothing, but in the evening it can cool down a lot in Dalat.
  • Don’t bring too much . The more you bring, the more you need to carry.
  • Check what is possible . Not every place you are allowed to make a campfire. Also, not every tour include trekking. Make a list of the things you want and use it to compare it to all the places you can do camping in Dalat.
  • Keep the camping area clean . The most obvious, but always good to mention: make sure to bring your trash with you.

1. Bidoup National Park

camping in Bidoup National park

Bidoup National Park is considered the best place for camping in Dalat. It is actually located 32 kilometer from the city center, on the way to the coastal city of Nha Trang. A real camping experience should be with stunning and peaceful nature and this is what makes Bidoup the perfect place to set up a tent. It is a bit off the beaten track, with a huge forest area and small rivers and lakes.

The huge advantage of this nature area it that it is perfect for (long) nature hikes. Enjoy the peace, and you might spot even some wild animals. If you get hot, then you can cool down in the water. From the highest peak in the park you have stunning views over the area with forest, hills and villages.

Bidoup National Park camping tour

If you are interested in going camping in Dalat, then this is the most recommended activity. With our Bidoup camping tour you get picked up from Dalat and head to the national park. During the tour you go trekking through the forest, along rivers and coffee plantations. With a bit of luck you can spot wild deer, boar and gibbons.

2. Tuyen Lam Lake

Tuyen Lam Lake camping Dalat at Jungle Fever tour

The most beautiful lake of Dalat is Tuyen Lam Lake and you can actually go camping here. Combine camping with a trekking through the stunning forest around the lake. If you are lucky, you may see a troop of wild gibbons or wild orchid in bloom. On the way, there are also some farms and local villages that you can visit.

3. Thien Phuc Duc hill

Camping in Dalat at Thien Phuc Duc hill

A great area to see the stunning low hanging clouds is Thien Phuc Duc hill. The best time to see the clouds is in the early money, so camping is your best option. Especially the the views are making this one of the best areas for camping in Dalat. Thien Phuc Duc hill is one of the best camping areas around Dalat with the best views. You come here mainly for the beautiful view and not to go trekking. But it’s fun before you go back to the city after camping, to visit one of the nearby strawberry farms.

4. Da Phu hill

camping in Dalat at Da Phu hill

About 10-12 km from Dalat city center, is Da Phu hill. Da Phu hill is a similar camping area as Thien Phuc Duc hill. The scenery is beautiful. In the evening you will admire the shimmering lights of the farmhouses. Early in the morning 3-4 am open your tent to watch thousands of starts. In the early morning, between 5 and 6 AM is the time to welcome the sunrise and see the clouds hanging below between the hills and forest.

Camping in Dalat at Hon Bo Hill

Hon Bo is the highest hill in the east of Dalat. Due to the distance, you don’t have very clear views towards the city, but instead there are stunning views over the surrounding hills and a flower village. At night you can see the lights from all the green houses in the village that light up. In the early morning you will be rewarded with a sea of clouds hanging in the hills below. With magical views from both in the evening and morning, makes this place one of the best places to go camping in Dalat.

It is quite easy to reach and a popular place for Vietnamese to go camping too. That brings one big downside and that is that some people leave their trash behind.

6. Golden Spring Lake

The area around Golden Spring Lake (Hồ Suối Vàng) has become extremely popular for camping these days. There are several places around the lake where you can camp with your own tent (or a tent that your guide brings along), but because of the popularity, campsites with permanent tents can also been found here. Here you also have the opportunity to go glamping. A few campsites nearby are:

Camp Art Dalat campsite

Camp Art is the first campsite in this area, started by an artist. This is clearly visible, because the area is beautifully designed with an eye on nature. The campsite really blends in the natural environment. There are also a few glamping tent available for more comfort and they look great in photos.

Ankroet Camp

Ankroet Camp is one of the most famous campsites in Dalat. It is located between the hills and forest and there is even a small river running through the camping grounds. There are a few different type of tents and enough tents if you are traveling with a large group.

Dalat Camp is a campsite around 20 kilometers from the city center, right in the same area as Ankroet Camp. They did their best to make it very atmospheric. In the evening it is beautifully lit with lights that hang in the trees and go from tent to tent. There is also a campfire every evening where you can warm yourself up and enjoy a nice drink.

In addition to camping, there is also the possibility here for glamping in Dalat. There are a number of more luxurious clamping tents. Dalat Camp mainly focuses on Vietnamese tourists, so keep in mind that communication in English can be difficult.

Camping at Golden Valley

Golden Valley is the most famous campsite in Dalat. Many camping festivals are organized here.

With the advantage of having a large lawn and right next to the poetic Golden Stream, this place is chosen to host big picnic events.

The scenery of pine forest combined with Golden Stream creates an extremely romantic spectacle in the early morning.

Camping at Golden Valley

Camping in LangBiang Mountain

This campsite is not easy for first-time people because of extreme weather conditions and must walk quite a distance.

Normally, people will camp at the two main locations: Rada peak and Hon Ba peak. Hon Ba Peak is 2,167m high above the sea level and has to walk quite hard.

If you are not a professional camper, you should not choose this location, it is both cold, hard to go and it is very difficult to call support team if you have problem.

Camping in LangBiang Mountain

Camping beside Tuyen Lam Lake

When mentioning about camping in Dalat, many people will immediately think about this place.

In spring, landscape of Tuyen Lam Lake is extremely romantic. If you like to watch clouds, you can go up Pinhat peak beside Tuyen Lam Lake.

This place is also considered as an ideal campsite, shooting photo and watching sunrise.

Another advantage for this attractive campsite is the location near the city center and moving extremely easily.

Camping in Golden Stream, lonely pine tree

This place is still wild, few people know the way to here; the scenery is super beautiful and super sparkling. Ultra-wide viewing angles, camping are very great if you come here in the pink grass season.

Camping in Da Lat Full experience guide

dalat camping tour

As much as I like the city of Dalat , it’s the surrounding landscape that most appeals to me whenever I make the journey up to this part of the Central Highlands: purple mountains cloaked in pine forests stretching into the misty distance, the smell of wood smoke and coffee blossom scenting the cool air, and the stillness and silence of an alpine landscape that most people wouldn’t normally associate with tropical Vietnam. For me, by far the most rewarding way to experience this region is by camping in Dalat .

Experiences for camping in Da Lat

Camping in the pine forests surrounding Dalat is the most rewarding way to experience the region

Guide: Camping in Da Lat’s Forest

1.why camp in dalat  .

The first time I came to Dalat, in 2005, I remember my excitement building on the bus journey as the road climbed higher through jungle and mountains, only to be disappointed on arrival, when I realized that very little of this landscape is visible from the city itself. What was the point, I wondered, in travelling all the way up into the mountains if, once you arrived, there was no sensation of being there? Of course, most visitors to Dalat go on excursions to waterfalls, lakes and valleys within easy reach of the city. However, because Dalat is such a popular destination for domestic and foreign tourists, these nearby scenic sites are often (but not always) heavily commercialized, busy and underwhelming. To really immerse yourself in the natural setting of this area, rent some wheels, ride a short way out of the city, find a spot in the forests, and camp.

2. Notes when camping in Dalat

If you need a professional camping tour in Da Lat to take care of your group’s camping program, you can contact us.

Notes when camping in Dalat

Undeniably, camping in Dalat is an extremely interesting and fascinating experience. But the weather in Dalat at night is not comfortable for everyone, especially in the winter. Unlike other places, Dalat is not easy to camp overnight, so you should read these notes to have a beautiful experience.

This is the first and most important issue when you decide to camp overnight in Dalat. Any season, Dalat is cold at night, before deciding to go to Dalat and camp overnight, you should note 5 following weather issues: Rainy season, from September to December, you should not camp in Dalat, this season Dalat is extremely cold and wet.

Choose the suitable campsite

You should not choose the campsite up to your hobby and bring the tent there right away. Depending on the health, conditions and experience of the team to decide the appropriate campsite.

If you have not the experience and you want to be safe, you should choose campsites that are easy to move, near the center such as Xuan Huong Lake and Tuyen Lam Lake. If you want to hunt cloud photos, go to the top of the hills like Lang Biang, Da Phu or Hon Bo. If you like to explore and enjoy the sunrise, choose Golden Valley, Golden Stream. One place that is safe and loved by many campers: Ma Rung Lu Quan.

Camping in the Pine Forests north of Dalat

Where to Camp?  Rent a motorbike or bicycle from your guesthouse or hotel in Dalat and ride northwest out of town on the Pine Tree Road. After 35km this leads to Hồ Suối Vàng (Golden Spring Lake), a popular picnic spot for domestic tourists. Scenic enough but blighted by appalling trash left by picnickers, continue on the Pine Tree Road past the lake, heading due north. The road immediately starts to climb into dense pine forests and continues to meander through them for at least fifteen kilometres, skirting the boundaries of Bidoup Nui Ba National Park. Look out for dirt tracks leading off the main road and into the forest. Take any one of these tracks and follow it until you find a good campsite under the canopy of pines.

What is a Good Campsite?  The pine forests here are great for camping: the carpet of fallen pine needles is soft to sit and lie on, the pine trees offer shade from the sunshine during the day and shelter from the cold, wind and rain during the night, and there’s plenty of dead wood lying around for making a small fire (although obviously you need to be very careful, especially in the dry season, as pine is very flammable). Personally, I like to camp on the ridge just north of Ho Suoi Vang (which I’ve come to refer to as The North Face, in honor of the brand of my tent), but there are plenty of other good spots too.

Camping in Da Lat

The pine forests are perfect for camping, but choose your campsite carefully before setting up camp

Choose your position carefully. A good campsite in this area is one with easy access to the main road (in case you need to make a quick exit because of bad weather or any other unforeseen circumstance), but preferably not in sight of it. This is because you don’t want to attract the curiosity of any passersby (of which there are very few anyway). In general, try not to draw attention to yourself: wild camping in Da Lat is still quite unusual in Vietnam, so anyone who sees a foreign traveller setting up their tent in the middle of the woods will naturally be curious, or even, in some cases, suspicious. Try to make sure no one sees you riding into the forests from the main road, and make sure you choose a campsite that is both in a commanding position – where you can view your immediate surrounds – but also relatively hidden from view. Remember that, at this altitude (over 1,500m), the nights can be surprisingly cold. Don’t pitch your tent in a position exposed to the wind, but also bear in mind that, if it rains during the night, you don’t want to be at the bottom of a slope where all the runoff rainwater will flood your campsite.

Da Lat camping sites

A good campsite is one that’s not visible from the road, because you don’t want to attract attention

What Equipment Do I Need?  Make sure you come prepared because, once you leave Dalat, there are very few shops in the area. This is ‘wild camping’ so you’ll need your own tent. There are a few decent camping stores in Saigon, such as Fanfan, but you should also be able to find a tent for sale or to rent in Dalat if you try hard, but the cheaper tents are very unlikely to be waterproof (however, this shouldn’t be an issue during the dry season: December to March). You could start by asking at your hotel or perhaps enquire about it at Phat Tire Ventures. You’ll need a small camp stove or something to cook on over the fire, lots of bottled water (5 litre bottles are available in general stores in Dalat for 25,000vnd [$1]), some food supplies such as instant noodles, coffee, fruit, chocolate (nuts are a good camping snack), a torch (flashlight), warm clothing and a sleeping bag or thick blanket – remember it gets  cold  in this area at night, no matter how warm it feels during the daytime. Having something to sleep  on  is also a good idea: the ground can be cold, hard and uneven, so having something soft and insulating between you and it makes the difference between a comfortable night and a sleepless one.

Come prepared because there are very few shops in the area: bring food, water & warm clothes

Most importantly, bring something to put your rubbish in. Sadly, many domestic travellers neglect to do this: set an example by making sure you leave your campsite as you found it. For peace of mind, it’s good to have a lock for your motorbike or bicycle so that you can secure the wheels and leave it near your tent during the night. Lastly, bring a bottle of the local mountain brew to keep you warm and jolly under the night sky. Rice wine ( rượu  in Vietnamese) is very popular in the highlands. In particular, I like the flowery, fruity, strong flavour of rose myrtle rice wine – ask around or look out for signs by the roadside saying  rượu sim .

Experiences for camping in Da Lat

For peace of mind, remember to lock your bike at night and make sure it’s visible from your tent

When is the Best Time to Camp?  The best time of year to camp in this area is the height of the dry season, from December to March. During this time the weather is perfect for camping: dry, warm (but not too hot), sunny and bright. However, the nights can get very cold (single digits Celsius on some occasions) and the early mornings are misty and damp. During the summer months (June to September) rains can spoil the fun, although nighttime temperatures are warmer.

The dry season (December-March) is best for camping in Dalat , but the nights are cold & mornings misty

Is it Safe?

I’ve camped in the pine forests north of Dalat many times over the years and I’ve never had a bad experience. On one occasion, my friend and I were forced to abandon our campsite in the early evening, because it had rained steadily for 5 hours and we’d carelessly pitched our tents at the foot of a hill, so that the rains ran down and flooded them. I was once disturbed (and terrified) during the night when I heard heavy footsteps approaching my tent and saw two giant shadows moving outside, only to discover that they were a couple of beautiful buffalo.

I’ve never had a problem with local authorities: one time, a forestry worker walked by my campsite, I asked his permission to camp, and he said it was fine as long as I did so responsibly. When you go to sleep, make sure you have all your most valuable possessions with you  inside  the tent, and don’t leave food out during the night. In general, if you come prepared and use your common sense, you should be fine. If for some reason you need to bail out in the middle of the night, Dalat is only a 45 minute ride away by motorbike.

At night, the pine forests can feel like a scary place to be, but I’ve never encountered any problems

Is it Fun?  Whether camping alone or with friends, chances are this will be a night you’ll remember. I like to find my campsite around mid-morning so that I can pitch my tent, collect fire wood and organize my things. Then I spend the day in the dappled sunlight under the giant pine trees, watching the colours change over the mountains, reading, snacking, chatting, playing the ukulele and singing until sunset. I make a fire at dusk as the sun is disappearing behind the ridges to the west. When darkness falls it’s always a surprise to find that mine is not the only fire in these forests: half a dozen other flickering orange lights appear in the landscape around me – a reminder that some people in the Central Highlands (mostly ethnic minorities) still live semi-nomadic lives.

Camping in Da Lat guide

Watching the sun set over the mountains & forests from my campsite with a coffee & a song

When the night gets cold I lie by the fire, watching the stars and thinking about the animals that once inhabited these forests: travel writers in the 1950s wrote about wild tigers and elephants being a daily concern for locals, who avoided walking from house to house in Dalat at night for fear of an animal attack. Today, however, the only large wildlife you’re likely to encounter are buffalo, which can still be a pretty scary sight in the middle of the night. The thing that stays with me the most from my camping trips in Dalat is the sound of the wind through the pine trees at night – a sound that is at once haunting and comforting – and the good times I’ve spent camping here with my friends, staring up at the stars and drinking rice wine together.

Product Description

Dalat Walking Tour is a half day tour we arrange in Dalat. This pleasant 2 hour walk takes you out to the pine forested area just north of Dalat and wanders down on peaceful trails to the lake below. The trail goes over a couple of moderate hills before dropping down gradually. Dankia Lake greets you at the end of the trail and a beautiful park with flower gardens presents an opportunity to sit back and enjoy the great outdoors.

Dalat Walking Tour Itinerary

This trip starts with a short vehicle transfer from either our office or your hotel to the trail head (about 20 minutes). The drive on the way out of town takes you past beautiful flower farms and presents some impressive vistas of Langbian Mountain in the distance.

The trail starts out on a dirt road and turns off onto a small trail after just a couple of hundred meters.

We head up a hill and then down into the valley on the other side. The trail is fringed with pine trees the entire way. Water buffaloes can be seen wallowing in mud puddles dug out by the local farmers.

The trail slowly descends down to the lake from this point and the southern shores of the lake can be made out from a key vantage point on the way.

As we get close to the end of the trail, horses can be seen grazing in the wide open flat area that is left during the dry season, when the lake has receded. When we reach the end of the trail, a park dedicated to flowers greets us and presents the opportunity for more pleasant walking. It’s a great place to wander around and find a pleasant shady area to enjoy a snack. Trip ends.

  • Entrance fees.

Unless required most of the following services are usually not included in our tour price.

  • Flight/Train tickets.

They speak the local dialects, know the cultural traditions and give tips on suggested behavior in fragile ecological areas and tribal communities. For some itineraries, the role of tour leader and representative is combined.

Our drivers don’t speak English. It’s possible that a few of them might know some basic words, such as telling time, stop, and lunch. If you’re looking for effective communication throughout the journey, we highly recommend booking a tour guide.

Trip routes

Principally, Lotussia Travel requires all the trip associates to know the destinations well by any means of traveling or enquiry to the local suppliers to figure out all the relative details of any trip. For adventure tours such as jungle trekking, mountain hiking, sea kayaking, river rafting or biking, cycling tours, Lotussia Travel will never add any new routes into available schedule until survey or pre-view it.

Accommodation

Lotussia Travel carefully choose all the hotels, guest-houses or home-stays based on service quality, location, and characteristics, doing best to make the accommodations in the remote small places as comfortable as possible. Please bear in mind that hotels in Vietnam might not be in the same standard in other country. Generally hotels in major cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh city, Hoian, Hue…are much better than hotels and guest-houses in mountainous areas.

Lotussia Travel take dinning as an indispensable experience to clients since it is an important part in Vietnamese culture. Therefore, Lotussia Travel will not intend take clients to the most expensive restaurants but non-touristy local ones which offer delicious, local food, with nice or interesting atmosphere. The restaurants might be simple in the country but LOTUSSIA Travel guarantee is sanitary and cleanliness. Or even on our trek, we encourage our cook offer client food with new tastes from day to day. During adventure itineraries to mountainous or remote areas, there is sometimes no choice for hotel and restaurants. We will try our best to bring you the best taste of local food.

As the tap water in Vietnam is undrinkable, Lotussia Travel recommend clients to drink bottled water throughout your trip, or boiled water on treks. Lotussia Travel offers bottle water all the day, and soft drinks like Cola, Sprite or Vietnamese Tea or if possible juice in restaurants (if mentionned in itinerary). This is not automatically included in the packages. In simple restaurant or on camping, Lotussia Travel offers boiled water, instant coffee or juice, wrapped milk (Details are confirmed in bottom of your itinerary).

Transportation

In most destinations of Vietnam, all the roads are well paved though the traffic is quite messed up like in Hanoi, Hai Phong… We use proper vehicles, car, minibus or coach in good condition based on the size of the groups. We use 4WD only on the rough road where the other vehicles could not pass through or based on clients requirement on overland journeys or treks. For cycling itineraries, we usually use our support minibus or minibus with support truck. For sea kayaking, river rafting trips, diving packages we use standard boat as support. Detailed information is provided on our service proposal.

We use drivers who are native or local of each travel destination and maintain good safety records for all trips. Most of our drivers can speak English but a little bit. This is just enough to understand basic words such as “time of departure”, “stop”, “restaurants”, “hotels”…If you want to learn more about Vietnamese culture and information about sightseeing sites, booking a tour guide is highly recommended.

6 Last-Minute Travel Tips for the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

I n less than a month, people will look to the sky as the moon passes between the sun and the Earth in a celestial event known as a total solar eclipse . The phenomenon is set for April 8, 2024, and the next one that can be seen from contiguous United States will be August 2044 , so it's unsurprising that eclipse fever has gripped the nation. Between 1 and 4 million people are predicted to travel to the path of totality, joining the 31 million people already living within it.

Among the tours, cruises, hotels, and even scenic flights offering their own spin on the total solar eclipse experience, here are six tips that last-minute planners should keep in mind for the special day.

1. Figure out where you want to go

There are 13 U.S. states on the path of this year's eclipse: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine (small parts of Tennessee and Michigan are also in the path). Among all of these states, totality will occur in two national parks-Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas and Cuyahoga National Park in Ohio-and they're expected to get crowded. Instead, consider one of the more than 100 state parks along the path, some of which are more off the radar. If you're more of a city dweller, you can also experience totality in big cities, including San Antonio, Austin, Cleveland, and Rochester.

Consider the weather, too. According to NOAA 's past weather records, April weather seems to bring more chances of rain-meaning more potential for cloud coverage-in the Northeast than in the South.

2. Consider the length of totality

Aiming for a destination in the path of totality is a no-brainer, although the amount of totality you'll get depends on where you go. The closer to the center of the path of totality an area is, the longer the total eclipse lasts. Take Austin and Dallas: While both are on the path of totality, Austin will get 1 minute and 46 seconds of totality, while Dallas will get 3 minutes and 52 seconds of totality. The longest duration you can get for totality is about 4 minutes and 30 seconds. Particularly traveler-friendly spots to maximize your time in the dark are Texas Hill Country towns like Kerrville (which will receive around 4 minutes and 24 seconds of totality and is partnering with NASA) and Fredericksburg (which is set to get 4 minutes 23 seconds of totality). Texas Hill Country is also one of AFAR's best places to go in 2024 .

3. Consider camping

If you want a solar eclipse experience surrounded by nature rather than people, camping may suit you better. But booking developed campgrounds at state parks and well-known nature spots will likely be difficult at this point. As an alternative, check for privately owned land through platforms like Hipcamp or look for dispersed camping sites in a national forest, like Ozark National Forest or Green Mountain National Forest . While backcountry spots may not have amenities, they can be perfect for those seeking solitude.

In addition, be sure to check the capacity of a park when it comes to handling the influx of visitors for April 8. As an example, Erie's tourism board is discouraging visits to Presque Isle State Park to prevent bottleneck traffic from its one entry and exit point.

4. Look into a town, festival, or last-minute tour

Plenty of places within the path of totality are putting their own spin on the solar eclipse with dedicated festivities. Get an educational experience at Rochester Museum & Science Center's ROC the Eclipse Festival , a three-day event that includes talks titled "Frontiers of Plasma Physics" and "The Search for Earth-Like Planets" from science experts. Or lean into grandeur at the four-day Texas Eclipse Festival in Burnet, Texas; its lineup includes music performances, yoga sessions, and immersive art experiences. (If you're heading to Texas for the eclipse event in general, check out this interactive map of special activities happening across the state.)

If the mere thought of navigating trip logistics brings a headache, check for the availability of some solar eclipse tours. Some tours still have availability, like Holland America Line's whopping 22-day Solar Eclipse cruise tour through North America. Others, like Travel Quest's Mexico's Copper Canyon Total Solar Eclipse tour , only have wait-list spots. But don't give up hope: As last-minute cancellations roll in, a quick call could secure you a place.

5. Try to get a last-minute spot at hotels in the path of totality

Hotels are leaning into the solar eclipse experience too, and properties are throwing celebrations and dedicated solar eclipse events just for the event. Miraval Austin Resort and Spa is hosting a viewing session with its astrologer, while Hôtel Swexan in Dallas is offering solar eclipse wellness activities on the evening of April 8 that includes meditation, a sound bath, and a Reiki healing session.

Keep in mind that a last-minute booking may cost a premium. Properties all across the band of totality are recording sky-high prices -even budget hotels . Similar to booking tours, do your due diligence and call to check for a cancellation.

6. Come prepared

Of course, you should wear solar eclipse glasses to prevent permanent damage to your eyes. If you're going to an event, check to see if they will be provided or if you'll need to bring your own. If you don't want to buy them, you can use household materials like cardboard to make your own pinhole projector , a contraption that allows you to see the sun change shape as the moon crosses in front of it.

In addition to bringing materials for the day of the event, anticipate what happens next. The length of totality is less than five minutes, but the traffic afterwards may disrupt your plans for hours. If you're coming from a crowded park or city, be on the safe side and come prepared with extra snacks and water.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun in total alignment.
