Black Sea Cruises

Black Sea cruises whisk travellers to idyllic beaches, enchanting cities and millennia of history, with each new day offering the chance to walk in the footsteps of ancient civilisations. Situated in the far eastern corner of Europe, the Black Sea is bordered by six countries – Turkey, Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia and Ukraine – and linked to the Mediterranean via the Bosphorus and Dardanelles Strait. Popular Black Sea cruise ports of call include Istanbul (the main gateway to The Black Sea), Varna and Odessa, each offering a different glimpse of Eastern Europe’s charm and beauty. The Black Sea cruise season runs from mid-April through to October, with the summer months of June, July and August being the warmest, but also the busiest. Most Black Sea cruises set sail from Athens or Istanbul.

Why choose Black Sea cruises

Black Sea cruises take in big city heroes such as Istanbul as well as lesser-known, evocative stops like Odessa in Ukraine and Batumi in Georgia. Unlike the familiar sights of the nearby Mediterranean, the lesser-known jewels of the Black Sea are ripe for discovery, meaning cruisers can immerse themselves in unfamiliar sights, sounds and aromatic fragrances.

Top cruising destinations in the Black Sea

Take a Black Sea cruise from Istanbul to enjoy this richly historical land with some of the best cuisines you’ll ever taste. Turkey boasts incredibly varied scenery from beaches to mountains and the great cityscape of the capital. A succession of empires – including the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans – have all left their mark on this former stopover along the Silk Road, which is evident through its diverse architecture and the aromatic flavours cooked up in its kitchens and meyhanes (taverns).

For Ukraine, set sail on Black Sea cruises from Odessa. Europe’s biggest country, Ukraine, is a nation rich in colourful tradition and off-the-map experiences. Having only appeared on the map in 1991, the country has already managed two revolutions plus Russian invasions, meaning history, both ancient and recent, abounds in this vast land, whether you’re slurping borshch in someone’s Soviet-era kitchen or following in Tchaikovsky’s footsteps at the grand opera house in Odessa. Ukraine’s landscapes offer rich pickings for scenic exploration for those on shore excursions while cruising around the Black Sea, whether that’s hill-walking in the Carpathians or wandering the country’s vast forests, foraging for berries and mushrooms.

Yes, you can take Black Sea cruises from Bulgaria, too. A Balkan nation with diverse terrain, Bulgaria is perhaps best known for its miles of sandy beaches and affordable coastal resorts. Even the country’s two big cities, Varna and Burgas, have beautiful beaches within minutes of their urban hearts. Away from the sands, seven mountain ranges ripple across the country, glacial lakes sparkle between snow-dusted peaks, and tangles of forest conceal wolves, bears and lynx, as well as fortresses and ruins.

On Romania cruises, note that Transylvanian towns where time stands still contrast with the pulsing energy of vibrant Bucharest. The land that gave us Dracula has no shortage of jaw-dropping castles pitched on rocky hilltops, and an abundance of folk culture thrives in its tiny villages, where horses and carts are the preferred methods of transport and old crafts such as bread-making, pottery, tanning and weaving are still used.

Home to Caucasus Mountain villages and Black Sea beaches, Georgia is famous for Vardzia, a sprawling cave monastery dating back to the 12th century, and its ancient wine-growing region Kakheti. Black Sea cruises to this nation offer up a hiker’s paradise - Georgia boasts breathtaking lakes, canyons and waterfalls to explore, as well as quirky coastal towns such as Batumi, where Art Nouveau architecture brushes shoulders with brutalist Soviet buildings.

Russia’s huge expanse borders the Black Sea in the west, the Pacific Ocean in the east and the Arctic Ocean in the north. Its Black Sea territory, known as the Russian Riviera, draws Russia’s moneyed elite during the summer months who come to bathe in its waters and enjoy the lively town of Sochi. Many wealthy Russians, including Stalin, built luxurious villas here, and excellent restaurants and a uniquely Russian party vibe can still be found, should you fancy a big night out while cruising the Black Sea.

Iconic Black Sea cruise port of call

Istanbul, turkey.

Straddling two continents, with one foot in Europe and the other in Asia, exotic Istanbul is packed full of colourful bazaars, potent spices, and bustling coffee shops. On a Black Sea cruise from Istanbul, top sights include Topkapi Palace, the official residence of the Ottoman Sultans, and the Blue Mosque that takes its name from the 21,000-plus tiles that decorate its interior. No visit would be complete without a foray into the labyrinthine Grand Bazaar, where more than 4,000 shops and stalls are stacked high with jewellery, carpets, clothes and talismans in every shape and size. Look out for locals playing backgammon on Galata Bridge as the sun sets.

Amasra, Turkey

This atmospheric harbour town juts out into the Black Sea and offers an authentic glimpse into local life. Amasra's old town, with its Byzantine gateway, cobbled streets and castle, is a wonderful place to stroll around. The town's museum, with artefacts from the Roman, Byzantine, Genoese and Ottoman eras, was once named the best small museum in Turkey. Amasra is also linked by a stone bridge to the island of Boztepe, which has a castle. Further inland, travellers can explore the UNESCO-listed village of Safranbolu, with its charming wooden Ottoman houses.

Odessa, Ukraine

On Black Sea cruises to or from Odessa, you'll find a big city with a small-town feel - it's an energetic, historical port. Stroll along Primorskiy Boulevard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that leads to one of cinema’s greatest landmarks, the infamous steps from Battleship Potemkin. Or, head to the pedestrianised Deribasovskaya Street, packed with cafés, statues, monuments and street performers. The pride and glory of Odessa is its neo-classical Opera House and Ballet Theatre, which once hosted musical events conducted by Tchaikovsky. Shoppers should head to the Seven Kilometres Bazaar, the largest outdoor market in Europe, for finds like leather goods, jewellery, clothing and everything in between. Or just kick back and relax on Odessa’s miles of beautiful beaches.

Batumi, Georgia

Set against a backdrop of verdant hills, Batumi is one of the oldest cities in Georgia and its busiest seaside resort. Famous for growing tea, citrus fruits and tobacco, the city’s premier attraction is Batumis Bulvari, a tree-lined boulevard that runs along the waterfront and shingled beach, hosting numerous lively bars and cafes. Quirky modern architecture stands side-by-side with ancient buildings, offering some extraordinary photograph opportunities. Take the cable car to the nearby Anuria Mountain for stunning sunset views of Batumi from above. Or pootle around the botanical garden, a subtropical oasis of plants, trees and flowers, on one of its cute electric trains. Some Black Sea cruise lines offer a folklore performance and a visit to a local family home during a port call at Batumi.

Varna, Bulgaria

Known as the 'Pearl of the Black Sea', Varna is the third largest city in Bulgaria and one of the country’s most attractive coastal towns. Besides being a popular beach resort, Varna is the headquarters of the Bulgarian Navy, and rivals the cities of Sofia and Plovdiv in its wealth of museums, art galleries and historical buildings such as the impressive, 19th-century Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin and extensive Roman Spa ruins. The city has a relaxed, cosmopolitan charm created by the warm, sunny climate, calm sea, beach promenades and red-tiled roofs. Nearby, mud baths and hot springs offer a heavenly opportunity to relax and rejuvenate.

Constanta, Romania

The oldest city on the 'Litoral', the Romanian equivalent of the French Riviera, Constanta's attractions include the remains of Roman mosaics that once linked the upper town to the harbour. The Art Nouveau casino, with wonderful views across the ocean, is well worth a look even though it's no longer in service. Black Sea cruises visitors can take a day tour to Bucharest, Romania's capital, to see the largest palace in the world, built by former president Ceausescu. Other sights are the Greek, Roman and Byzantine remains at Histria, the 'Romanian Pompeii', about an hour's drive away.

Sochi, Russia

Lying at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains, Sochi is a sprawling spa town with good beaches and a range of health spas. The big thing to see here is Stalin's lurid green villa, built in 1937 and known as a Dacha in Russian. Visitors can pose for a photo by his billiards table or by a wax model of Stalin sitting behind his desk. The tranquil Riviera Park includes the Friendship Alley, with trees planted by politicians and celebrities, and visitors on Russia cruises can now also tour the venues used in the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Best cruising experiences in the Black Sea

Try plum brandy.

Plum brandy, known as slivovitz, is a popular and potent spirit often served with meals in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. It's polite to do a shot and toast one another, and you won’t have to look hard for it as restaurant owners generously lavish this clear fruit brandy, distilled from damson plums, upon its customers. Get ready for a fiery experience along a cruise to the Black Sea.

Listen to folk music

From live music performed in local bars and cafés to a good knees-up around a household hearth, one of the most beguiling parts of a Black Sea cruise is its folk music. Listen out for the tambura, a mandolin-like instrument of Turkish origin, as well as the use of wooden spoons, gypsy violins, clarinets and accordions.

Discover ancient gems

The Black Sea cruise ports offer up a realm crammed with antiquities from ornate palaces and Roman ruins to centuries-old monasteries carved into cliffs. It’s a place where colossal church domes jostle for space alongside towering Moorish minarets, so you can expect to confront a rich tapestry of cultural and historical influences around every corner.

Shop for lace

Among the loveliest souvenirs you can bring back from Black Sea cruise ports of call, are items crafted from handmade lace, delicate needlework, crochet and embroidery; a speciality of the region. Browse clothes, socks, tablecloths and design pieces in the lively local markets or lace shops and admire the hours of careful work that went into each piece.

Tuck into local delicacies

From kebabs to hazlenuts, baklava to beyaz altın – a super-strength garlic known as ‘white gold’ and famous for being up to 10 times more pungent than normal garlic – there’s plenty to get your taste buds going. Fish reigns supreme in these parts and the hamsi (anchovy) is lord of them all. Don’t miss the chance to sample a dense cornbread made using the ingredient, called hamsikoli on your Black Sea cruise shore excursion.

A Black Sea cruise will take you to lands known best for their history, variety of terrains, unique cultures and long-standing traditions. Port calls in the Ukraine, Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania are featured and sailings are typically 7 to 14 nights in length. Enjoy the sunny Crimean Coast, the colorful day-to-day activities of Istanbul, or the therapeutic resorts of Odessa. Itineraries often include visits to Greece and Italy as well.

  • The Black Sea cruise season is from mid-April to mid-October.
  • Black Sea cruises are 7 to 14 nights in length, although a few ships offer longer itineraries.
  • Because you'll need to fly a long distance to reach your port of departure, we suggest that you arrive at the port city at least one or two days in advance of your Black Sea cruise. This will give you time to rest and get oriented before boarding the ship. Most cruise lines offer pre-cruise hotel packages.

Helpful tips

Dos. In Turkey, skimpy outfits are considered provocative. Men should stick to trousers and women are advised to wear a long skirt and a scarf when visiting mosques.

Don'ts. Although the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is a great place to buy souvenirs, it is not customary to haggle. The prices on display are typically fixed. There may be more room for negotiation in shops catering to tourists, where the prices can be lowered by up to 50%.

Unique features

One of the country's most famous creations, Turkish coffee was actually introduced by Syrian merchants in the 16th century, although it did not really take off until the 17th century. The drink became so popular that the sultan signed an edict stating that women could petition for divorce if their husbands did not satisfy their coffee needs.

Everyone knows kebabs, but few have experienced the culinary masterpiece that is a testi kebab . Originally from Cappadocia, this dish is made from a combination of beef, lamb and vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, onions and garlic) simmered over a fire for several hours in a sealed clay jar. The only way to enjoy the dish inside is to break open the amphora, creating a theatrical and tasty dining experience!

Myths and legends

The legend of Ergenekon is Turkey's founding myth. After a terrible battle against Mongol invaders, the Turks, led by Prince Sevintch, were massacred on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Only one survivor was captured: young Peurtedjene, whose hands and feet were cut off by the enemy before he was abandoned in a swamp. Suffering in agony, he was saved by a she-wolf. She took him to a country created by the gods, the Ergenekon. Ten children were born of their union, helping to ensure the survival of the Turkish people.

In the spotlight

In October 2018, a team of underwater archaeologists discovered the world's oldest intact shipwreck in the Black Sea off the coast of Bulgaria. Dating back to 400 BC, this Greek trading vessel owes its incredible state of preservation to the deep water. Lying 2,000 metres below the surface, the lack of oxygen has allowed the materials to resist the wear that typically occurs over time.

Books. In Istanbul: Memories and the City , (2005, Faber & Faber) Ohran Pamuk sifts through his own childhood, from happy memories to confused recollections, punctuated by several emotionally charged situations. This autobiographical tale also offers a fascinating portrait of this bustling city, its crowded streets, its architecture and ruins, the waters that flow through it and the mountains that surround it. A bittersweet melancholy permeates Ohran's Istanbul, a city at the crossroads between two cultures. Following the publication of this book, the author received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2006.

Music. A contemporary pianist and composer, Fazıl Say began his international career very early, playing with the New York Philharmonic and the Orchestre National de France. He is also the founder of the Antalya Piano Festival and performs in many classical and jazz festivals in France and around the world. Fazıl Say brings his unique style to everything he plays, from Mozart to his own compositions.

Film. A tool of Bolshevik propaganda, Battleship Potemkin (Sergei Eisenstein, 1925) has long been censored by Western countries. However, it was named the greatest film of all time by 117 international critics at the Brussels World Fair in 1958. The film is based on the mutiny staged by the crew of the Potemkin in the port of Odessa in 1905, the revolt that swept through the population and the bloody repression that followed. The massacre of civilians in the city's monumental staircases is still considered one of the most ground-breaking sequences in the history of cinema.

Facts and figures

Black Cruises

For first-time cruisers or infrequent cruisers, consider the following “ Cruising 101 Tips .”

Cruise Line Operators : Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, Holland America, Celebrity, and many others own very large cruise ships for multi-day journeys. They follow strict onboarding & offboarding schedules, so be timely. Big Cruise Line Operators are required to follow Cruise Ship Law which is a bit convoluted because the ports of call in so many nations have different laws. The big brands do, however, attempt to follow high sanitary and safety standards. If something is not right in your room, report it to the Cruise Line Operator staff. Some Cruise Line Operators include one-day excursion activities on an island they own.

Cruise Group Operators : The groups listed below organize themed cruises for groups, in this case, Black Cultural Cruises. Some cruises take up a quarter, half, or all of a ship big cruise ship. Other Black Cultural Cruises may have groups of 100-200. The largest Cruise Group Operators have staff to help your journey be more comfortable or better informed. They also tend to have the best entertainment. Only Cruise Group Operators can answer questions about their pricing and services.

Shore Excursion Operators Independent operators who arrange dining, shopping, cultural tours, snorkeling, and other activities. Their quality and pricing vary. In the Passenger Welcome pitch & brochures, Cruise Line Operators will provide extensive lists. Some have special arrangements with local businesses and receive a commission on sales from tourists in their group. The largest and oldest Cruise Group Operators sometimes have connections with Shore Excursion Operators too. Focus on the Price-Value of the shore excursions you want.

Busiest Domestic & International Cruise Ports The busiest cruise ports typically have more amenities. From America’s Lower 48 states to the Caribbean, Mexico & Alaska consider excursions from Port Canaveral on Space Coast, Miami , Port Everglades Fort Lauderdale , Galveston , New York & New Jersey , New Orleans , Tampa , Seattle , Los Angeles , San Diego , and Baltimore . If cruising to the Southern Caribbean consider excursions from Puerto Rico or St. Thomas USVI . In Europe, consider excursions from Barcelona, Civitavecchia, Southhampton, and Marseille.

Is there any updated information to this site for 2020?

Working on it.

COVID changed everybody’s cruise plans

If I sincerely apologize for my white privilege, can I go on your cruise?

Can I get some information on the cruise ship

Hello, I just found this site. Is there any updated information on cruises for 2022 or 2023 and beyond? Do you plan cruises on any other beside Carnival or Royal Caribbean (like Celebrity)? Thansl, Paul JC

Cruises have been slow to recover from the pandemic. We’ll update again this summer.

Are you offering any cruises for the holidays?

Individual cruise operators arrange cruises. Sorry to disappoint you, but Soul Of America is a publisher, not a cruise operator.

EMBARK IN BUDAPEST

Arrive in Budapest, where your five-star floating hotel is moored. The friendly crew will welcome you on board and help you settle into your spacious, luxuriously appointed suite. The ship remains here overnight, so watch dusk descend over Hungary’s capital as you enjoy your first dinner on board.

Route Map

One of the most thrilling aspects of a cruise is waking up somewhere new, and there’s a real sense of excitement as we explore lands unknown to many until the Iron Curtain lifted. Hungary itself has so much to offer; situated at a crossroads in central Europe, it’s a mesmerising blend of European and Ottoman influences, rich in culture and history. Our adventure begins this morning when we arrive in Kalocsa, a city whose 1,000-year-old lore swirls with tales of warlike bishops, saintly kings, rampaging Ottomans and Magyar heroes. Among its fine buildings you’ll discover an impressive Baroque cathedral and the grand Archbishop’s Palace, with its Ceremonial Hall displaying a replica of the Hungarian holy crown.

You can choose to enjoy a walking tour of the town seeing the sights plus the fascinating Paprika Museum; the region is one of the biggest producers of the seasoning that’s an essential part of Hungarian cuisine – goulash being a famous example. There are many types and strengths of ‘red gold’, but the best variety is said to come from here, due to its rich colour and robust flavour.

Alternatively we take the short drive to a paprika house on the outskirts of the town to learn more about its production before continuing on a scenic drive into the Puszta, Hungary’s Great Plain, a hauntingly atmospheric prairie whose spirit is burnt into the Magyar soul. Stretching as far as the eye can see, it is home to villages seemingly frozen in time, while Hungarian grey cattle, spiral-horned sheep and buffalo graze on its pastures. The Puszta is also famed for its horses, and we visit an equestrian farm to watch a performance by some of the region’s most skilled riders. You’ll have the opportunity to take a horse-drawn carriage ride and experience this unique wilderness from a different perspective.

We return to the ship for lunch as our elegant vessel seamlessly glides away from her mooring. Later we enjoy a welcome drink with the Captain in the lounge before descending the elegant staircase to the restaurant for a special Welcome Dinner.

Paprika

This morning we arrive in historic Belgrade. The only European capital built at the confluence of two rivers, the city has been fought over numerous times, most recently during the Second World War and the Kosovo War, when it faced months of NATO airstrikes. Dramatically sited overlooking both rivers is Kalemegdan Park, which includes in its grounds the city’s iconic fortress, a stronghold built by the Celts, expanded by the Romans and besieged over a hundred times during its history – all detailed in its military museum. Despite its past, Belgrade is now a revitalized and forward-looking city and a delightful and varied place to explore, with delicate Art Nouveau facades tucked away among the stark concrete towers of the Communist era.

We enjoy a guided tour, seeing all the main sights such as the cathedral, Republic Square and Prince Michael Street with its wealth of 19th-century buildings, some bearing the scars of recent conflicts among their intricate Habsburg ornamentation. After lunch, you are free to explore this fascinating capital, still one of the least visited in Europe. Maybe you’d like to wander the Old Town’s lattice of winding streets, pausing for a welcome drink in one of the grand coffee houses or visit the bubbling bohemian quarter, which is being transformed into a 21st-century cultural hub by an influx of creative talent.

As the evening draws in, relax with a stroll or a drink on the Sun Deck before tonight’s culinary delights.

IRON GATES GORGE

For many, today will be a highlight of the cruise as we begin our passage through the magnificent Iron Gates Gorge. One of the most memorable stretches of the Danube, this is where the river cuts its mighty path between the Carpathian and Balkan mountain ranges, forming part of the boundary between Serbia and Romania. The ‘true’ Iron Gates is a single narrow gorge, but the name covers an entire 83-mile stretch of valleys where towering limestone cliffs plunge into the depths below. During the 1960s and ’70s, two hydroelectric power stations were built here and their dams raised the river level by over 100 feet, submerging a number of historic settlements. We pass through the Great Kazan, meaning ‘cauldron’, where the river narrows to just 500 feet. As the Captain skilfully steers us through, you’ll see the huge sculpture of a Romanian hero – Decebalus – carved into the rock. Created in the 1990s, at over 130 feet high it is the largest rock relief in Europe – it even dwarfs the US presidents at Mount Rushmore. Decebalus was the last king of Dacia, the kingdom stretching from the Carpathians to the Black Sea. A warrior through and through, he fought the Roman Empire in three campaigns before Emperor Trajan got the better of him. Decebalus fled into the Carpathians, taking his own life rather than being captured.

On a day like this, the spacious Sun Deck comes into its own. Watch the spectacular scenery drift by from the comfort of a sun lounger or maybe enjoy a drink with new friends. You may even find an ice cream being served on the Bow Deck, which is beautifully attired with soft furnishings and stylish wooden fittings.

By now you’ll have come to appreciate the luxuries on board your five-star ship – little touches from complimentary dressing gowns and slippers to plush carpets in the corridors and the marble-topped bar. Crossing the border into Bulgaria tonight, you awake in Nikopol, a town dating back to Roman times, and after breakfast, we drive across the Danubian Plain to Pleven. Surrounded by several thousand acres of parks and forests, the town is famed as the scene of a major siege in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877. The joint Russian and Romanian army took five months to take the town, partly because the defending Turks were the first in European history to use repeating rifles. Pleven was a decisive battle, leading to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the restoration of Bulgaria as a state and the independence of Romania. Opened to commemorate the battle’s centenary, the Pleven Panorama tells the story of this engagement through a series of moving photographs and canvasses. We enjoy some free time here, so perhaps visit the St George Chapel Mausoleum, a memorial to the soldiers killed during the siege, or one of the town’s many other museums. Or simply wander the Old Town and enjoy the tranquillity of its pedestrian-only streets.

During lunch we slip our moorings for an afternoon’s cruising, so why not enjoy the invigorating river breeze up on the Sun Deck? It will soon be time for dinner, so reconvene with your fellow travelers for an aperitif in the bar.

black sea cruises 2023

Today we visit Bucharest, with its tree-lined boulevards and elegant belle-époque villas – echoes of the hedonistic 1900s when it earned the nickname ‘Little Paris’ – dotted among the utilitarian architectural legacy of Communist rule. Dominating the capital city of Romania, though, is the astonishing Palace of the Parliament, a colossal concrete extravagance commissioned by the Communist dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu. Started in 1984 and still unfinished, it is the second-largest administrative building in the world after the Pentagon – so big that only 400 of the 1,100 rooms are used. Furnished with all the gaudiness expected from a heartless despot at the head of a bankrupt state, from marble staircases to mosaics and chandeliers, to some it’s a marvel, to others a monument to vanity.

On our guided tour we see the Palace of the Parliament, which really has to be seen to be believed, and the city’s other main sights, such as the former royal palace – now the national art museum – and the Athenaeum with its impressive Baroque cupola and remarkable acoustics. There are also some superb Orthodox churches and squares, including Revolution Square, named after the 1989 uprising that swept away Ceausescu’s regime.

There’s also time to explore this vibrant city under your own steam. Lunch isn’t included today, so seek out a cozy restaurant in the Old Town for a fortifying plate of traditional meatballs, generously spiced with garlic, dill, and parsley; freshly stuffed peppers or a hearty vegetable and dumpling soup.

We return to the ship with time to relax before dinner. Perhaps borrow a board game or novel from the library or book yourself in for a manicure or pedicure at the on-board Hair and Nail Salon.

black sea cruises 2023

DANUBE DELTA

Overnight we cruise towards the city of Tulcea, clinging to seven hills overlooking the river and regarded as the gateway to the vast Danube Delta on the edge of the Black Sea. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Danube Delta is the best preserved and second largest river delta in Europe, consisting of 2,200 square miles of rivers, marshes, tree-fringed lakes and reed islands, where nearly 3,500 animal and fish species, and 1,700 types of plant, make their home. A bird watcher's paradise, the maze of canals bordered by willows and oaks offers the perfect breeding ground for countless species. Millions of Egyptian white pelicans arrive here every spring to raise their young, while equal numbers of Arctic geese come to escape the harsh Northern European winters. Keep an eye out for cormorants and white-tailed eagles.

This morning, we take a coach from  Brăila to Tulcea, where we’ll board smaller boats and sail into the tranquil Danube Delta. Our guide helps to point out some of the fascinating flora and fauna – you could spot a colourful kingfisher or a catfish darting beneath the water’s glassy surface.

As dusk begins to fall on this magical landscape, we slip our moorings again. Enjoy another delicious dinner, maybe tonight choosing a more intimate dining experience in the Bistro at the stern.

black sea cruises 2023

Today we begin our return passage, but these lands still have so much to reveal. Hold on to your hat up on deck, as this area is well known for its windy weather and windmills were once a common sight. Watch the rocky shoreline drift by, dotted with the occasional ruined fortress. We depart for the ancient city of Constanta, described by the Roman poet Ovid as ‘the end of the world’ and with a history dating back over 2,500 years. Originally known as Tomis, it is said that Jason landed here with the Argonauts after finding the Golden Fleece. Situated on several trade routes, it became a thriving commercial center during Roman times and still is today. Numerous remains from Greek and Roman times are on display in the city’s archaeological and mosaics museums, the latter housing the largest – an impressive 9,150 square feet – and best-preserved Roman mosaic in the world. Constanta’s landmark is the Art Nouveau casino, with its views of the Black Sea. Now unused, it was built by the Romanian King Carol I, who hoped its construction would transform the city into a bathing resort for the elite during the inter-war years, something that never quite transpired. More recently, it became one end of the shortest navigable route between the North and Black Seas when the Main-Danube Canal opened in 1992.

There is free time to explore, so perhaps visit one of the museums or simply enjoy the sea air with a portside walk.

black sea cruises 2023

VELIKO TARNOVO, ARBANASSI & IVANOVO

Crossing into Bulgaria, we arrive in Rousse, a city known as ‘Little Vienna’ for its wealth of fine 19th-century buildings. A scenic drive brings us to possibly Bulgaria’s most beautiful city – Veliko Tarnovo, the ‘City of the Tsars’ and former capital, located in a rugged landscape entangled by the meanderings of the Yantra River. Its Old Town is clustered on three hills with its houses stacked on steeply sided valleys, while the remains of the once-impregnable fortress complex stands on Tsarevets Hill. Within the walls of this redoubt are the ruins of the Tsar’s Palace and, at the summit, the Patriarch’s Palace, which includes the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Ascension of God. Much of Veliko Tarnovo was destroyed by the Ottomans, but in the 19th century, it became an important trading center again. Tucked away in its picturesque cobbled streets are tiny workshops, where you can watch copper pots being beaten or wooden utensils skilfully carved. It is delightful to wander here, keeping an eye out for interesting traditional snacks to try, admiring the architecture while soaking up the atmosphere.

Later we head to the village of Arbanassi, set high on a plateau. During Ottoman times, it became a commercial center for traders and their caravans, crammed with wares bound for places as distant as Italy, Russia and even India. Perhaps visit one of the richly ornamented mansion houses of the period, with their fortress-like stone walls, or the unassuming Church of the Nativity – once inside you’ll be dazzled by the intensely colored frescoes.

We end the day with a visit to the Churches of Ivanovo, a fascinating complex of churches, chapels, and monasteries hewn into the solid rock during the 12th century and with frescoes dating back to the 14th century, so exquisite and historically significant they are now on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

black sea cruises 2023

BELOGRADCHIK

This morning why not take a cup of coffee up on deck and soak up the spectacular open spaces of this landscape, where thick woods of fragrant pine and silver fir cling to the banks, forming a hazy outline on the distant horizon? After lunch we moor in Vidin, home to the Baba Vidin, the only entirely preserved medieval fortress in the country. From here, we drive into this rugged wilderness and suddenly the horizon is dotted with huge sandstone cliffs, in a spectrum of orange-reds and yellows, eroded into huge, bizarre shapes. These are the Belogradchik Rocks – unique and dramatic, they cover an area of 35 square miles, some reaching as high as 600 feet. Many of these gigantic natural sculptures are named after people or objects they are thought to resemble, while others are associated with colorful legends.

We return to the ship for dinner. Later on, maybe enjoy a drink in the lounge with your companions while the resident pianist plays gentle melodies.

black sea cruises 2023

IRON GATES & LEPENSKI VIR

This morning’s cruising brings us once again to the dramatic splendor of the Iron Gates Gorge, at the heart of Serbia’s Djerdap National Park. The gorge was cut out of the Carpathian mountains over millions of years as the Danube drained the Pannonian Sea. Among the park’s forests of the ancient oak, hazel and beech lies a rich preserve of game, including deer and wild boar. Mountain goats roam the rocky cliffs of Djerdap Kazan, while bears, wolves, foxes, and wildcats populate the dense woodland. Keep an eye out for eagles and falcons, too. Why not enjoy the splendor of this stretch of the river from a sun lounger on deck or through the panoramic windows in the ship’s lounge?

This afternoon we moor in Donji Milanovac and take the short drive to Lepenski Vir, one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe, dating back to 9,500 BC. It consists of a series of Mesolithic villages located on a high terrace overlooking the Danube. The wooden houses were laid out in a fan shape and used one of the first types of concrete as their foundations, while their floors were made of sandstone, often covered with limestone plaster and decorated with red and white pigments. Our guided tour will reveal more about this fascinating place and how these ancient people lived.

The numerous fortresses along the Danube are reminders that the area has been fought over for centuries and this morning we pass one of the most impressive – the medieval Smederevo Fortress. After a lazy day we moor in Novi Sad, Serbia’s second-largest city, in the shadow of the Fruska Gora mountain, its fertile slopes terraced with vineyards. The climate and the proximity to the Danube make this region ideal for wine production, particularly Riesling, but there are many others produced here including Bermet, a vermouth-like dessert wine with a unique aromatic sweetness. Enjoy a guided tour of this vibrant city which flourished during the 18th and 19th centuries, becoming known as the ‘Athens of Serbia’. See its old Town Hall on the impressive main square, flanked by lovely 19th-century architecture, its ancient castle, and synagogue. Towering over it all is the mighty Petrovaradin Fortress with its complex system of underground tunnels. The minute and hour hands of its iconic clock face are reversed, supposedly so that fishermen could still tell the time at a distance. You can learn more about the fortress and its history at its museum.

We moor here this evening, so why not enjoy an after-dinner stroll and take in the relaxed ambiance of this lovely city?

black sea cruises 2023

OSIJEK & VUKOVAR

Today we cross into Croatia and stop in Vukovar, the country’s largest river port, located at the confluence of the Danube and Vuka Rivers. Vukovar boasted a prosperous manufacturing industry and a picturesque Baroque center until the tragic events of the civil war unfolded, and the city was almost completely destroyed. Renovation to restore the city to its former glory is very much ongoing.

Here we enjoy a guided tour, seeing the main sights and learning about the city’s tumultuous past. We then drive to the historic city of Osijek, which hugs the banks of the River Drava. We explore the Old Town – behind its thick stone walls lies an intriguing market square, lined by handsome public buildings with pastel-colored facades. In the Upper City, you’ll see the neo-Gothic cathedral, its red-brick spire soaring above the rooftops. Much of Osijek has been restored, but some buildings still bear the scars of the fighting.

This evening we cross into Hungary again, as the chef presents tonight’s appetizing menu.

black sea cruises 2023

As gentle pastoral landscapes slip by, Budapest’s brooding skyline comes into view once more. Straddling the Danube, this imperial capital is a collage of palatial buildings, grand domes and attractive Baroque churches with soaring spires. From Roman ruins to Ottoman Turkish baths and elegant Art Nouveau facades, the eclectic mix of architectural styles reflects the city’s varied history, with numerous foreign powers ruling here over the centuries. We enjoy a guided tour, seeing all the main sights of this lovely city including the iconic Parliament Building, the National Gallery with its huge collection of Hungarian masterpieces, and the Matthias Church with its intricate rose windows. The rest of the day is at leisure. Perhaps head back to the Castle District to take in the panoramic views or explore one of the city’s many museums and galleries.

The Captain’s Dinner is served this evening, with a superb menu reflecting the countries and regions we have visited. As the sun sets on this memorable city, retire to the bar with your fellow travelers to reflect on all you have seen during this exceptional cruise.

Ukraine Strikes the Headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in Crimea

The Russian Ministry of Defense said that it had shot down seven of 10 cruise missiles that Ukraine fired at the facility in the city of Sevastopol. The area hosts naval operations key to Moscow’s war efforts in Ukraine.

A Ukrainian attack targeting the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in Crimea damaged two ships and triggered a large blaze at a sprawling naval shipyard that plays a critical role in the Russian war effort, according to Russian and Ukrainian officials.

The pre-dawn attack on Wednesday appeared to be the largest on the Russian naval headquarters in the occupied port city of Sevastopol since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine nearly 19 months ago and underscored Ukraine’s growing capacity to hit targets deep into Russian-held territory.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement that Ukraine had fired 10 cruise missiles at the facility at the same time as it targeted a Russian warship on the Black Sea with three maritime drones. Air defense systems shot down seven cruise missiles, and the patrol ship Vasily Bykov destroyed the unmanned drones, the ministry said.

Moscow’s rare acknowledgment of a successful Ukrainian attack in Crimea came only after local residents posted images of explosions and raging fires at the Sevmorzavod shipyard on social media. Mikhail Razvozhaev, the Russian-backed governor of Crimea, later shared a photo that appeared to show the port side of a large landing ship on fire, though the full extent of the damage was not clear.

Mr. Razvozhaev said that at least 24 people were injured at the shipyard. The initial explosions, and sounds of air defenses, were first reported at about 2 a.m. local time.

It was unclear what weapons Ukraine deployed in the assault, but the commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, Lt. Gen. Mykola Oleshchuk, suggested that a long-range airstrike was involved.

“While the occupiers are still recovering from the nighttime bombardment in Sevastopol, I would like to thank the pilots of the Ukrainian Air Force for their excellent combat work,” he wrote in a statement . “To be continued …”

Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior presidential adviser, hinted that the attack was carried out using new weapons. He said in a statement that the only way to secure trade routes and grain shipments through the Black Sea was to build up Ukraine’s armed forces capacity, “including by expanding the range of weapons.”

“We can already see the results of this” in Sevastopol, he wrote.

He did not elaborate on what weapons were used. This summer, Ukraine acquired long-range weapons from the British and French, and Kyiv has also been developing its own domestically produced long-range cruise missiles.

The attack damaged an improved Kilo-class attack submarine, the Rostov-on-Don, and a Ropucha-class landing ship, the Minsk, according to Russian military bloggers and the Russian news outlet Baza , which did not cite sources.

The reports could not be independently confirmed, but Russian officials said the attacks had damaged two ships that were in dry dock. A satellite image taken by Planet Labs on Tuesday shows a Ropucha-class ship and an apparent submarine in the dry dock. Imagery from Planet Labs after the attack showed the ship and what appeared to be burn damage to the dry dock, though the resolution made the submarine harder to make out.

The attack on the Russian naval fleet comes only days after Ukraine said its forces had retaken several oil and gas drilling platforms on the Black Sea , which have played a role in Russia’s ability to project power off Ukraine’s coast since Moscow seized them in 2015.

Russian forces used the platforms, known as the Boyko Towers, as forward deployment bases, installing radar installations, long-range missile systems and a host of other equipment. Dmytro Pletenchuk, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy, said driving Russian forces off the platforms “allows us to keep them devoid of pertinent information, rendering them unable to react promptly or plan anything within our waters.”

Around the same time as the Russian port was coming under attack, the Ukrainian military said that it shot down 32 of 44 Iranian-made attack drones that were mainly targeting port and grain infrastructure in the Odesa region.

Oleh Kiper, the head of the Odesa military administration, said that the ports on the Danube River on the border with Romania were targeted once again and that seven civilians had been injured.

“We’re dealing with the aftermath,” he said in a statement. “Firefighters are working on containing the fire.”

Christiaan Triebert contributed reporting.

Ukraine’s Attack On Sevastopol Also Targeted Important Ships Crossing Black Sea

Two russian ships, the tanker yaz and the suspected arms runner ursa major, are headed to istanbul where they will leave the black sea. evidence suggests that, at the same time as the cruise missile attack on sevastopol, they were targeted by ukrainian maritime drones..

H I Sutton 14 Sep 2023

The first indications of the attack, shared with Naval News, came before 3am local time on September 13. By morning imagery of fierce fires in Sevastopol were coming in, and it soon emerged that two Russian Navy vessels were hit. The cruise missile attack on Sevastopol got world attention. A Russian Navy landing ship and a submarine were damaged, possibly destroyed.

Taking these vessels out of the fight is a significant success for Ukraine. But there is a lot which has been going less reported. Ukraine also attempted to thwart Russia’s vital weapons and military fuel supplies which flow in and out of the Black Sea.

Simultaneously with the cruise missile strike there was an attack by Ukrainian USVs (maritime drones). It is likely that the USVs (uncrewed surface vessels) were targeting key Russian ships sailing across the Black Sea.

Ukraine Gaining Greater Freedom In Black Sea

The attacks are part of a wider shift in the Black Sea. The launching of ten Storm Shadow or SCALP-EG cruise missiles can be tied back to the destruction of an S-400 system in northwest Crimea on August 24. Together with prying Russian surveillance systems off gas platforms offshore, this will have contributed to the Ukrainian jets’ ability to operate over the water. Russian air defenses remain a serious threat, but Ukraine is gaining space.

The upshot is a spectacular strike on Sevastopol, Russia’s main naval base in the region. Current information suggests that 5 Ukrainian Air Force Sukhoi Su-24 Fencer jets launched 10 missiles. Some of the missiles were shot down, but several hit the dry dock. There the Project 775 Ropucha Class landing ship Minsk was reduced to a twisted wreck. Most of the superstructure was razed, with the main mast left leaning precariously to starboard. Nearby the Project 636.3 Improved-Kilo class submarine Rostov-on-Don was hit. Again, the damage is believed to be significant.

black sea cruises 2023

The Russian Ministry of Defense has said that the ships will be fully restored and “will continue to serve in combat as part of their fleets”. This appears unlikely.

The landing ship is important as a logistic asset. These ships have moved from their traditional amphibious landing role to a mundane, yet crucial, transport one. Its sister ship, Olenegorsky Gornyak , has already been taken out of action on August 3 by a USV attack. Russia can ill afford to loose too many of these ships.

The loss of the submarine is arguably even more significant. The Improved-Kilo class boats are armed with Kalibr cruise missiles and have conducted numerous attacks against Ukraine. They also threaten merchant ships sailing to and from Odesa. There is now one less of these submarines in the Black Sea.

The dry docks are also blocked until the wrecks can be repaired, which is unlikely, or removed. This may have a major impact on the Russian Navy’s ability to maintain ships in the Black Sea.

Targeting Important Russian Ships

The Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV) attack gets less attention. The Russian government claims that 3 Ukrainian USVs were destroyed by the patrol ship Vasily Bykov . According to a Russian Ministry of Defense statement, the USVs were aimed at a detachment of Black Sea Fleet ships engaged in a the “sea crossing”. The implication is that the USVs were not targeting Sevastopol itself. In other words, it wasn’t a combined missile and maritime drone attack on the port, bit different targets.

This ties with ship movements observed by analysts. Two Russian government linked ships, the tanker Yaz and the arms ship Ursa Major , were sailing south towards the Mediterranean. These ships are the sisters of the tanker Sig , which was holed by a Ukrainian USV in August, and notorious arms runner Sparta-IV . Yaz is used to supply Russian forces with fuel. Ursa Major’s previous name was Sparta-III but it was changed after the U.S. government sanctioned her. The ships were being escorted by two Russian Navy patrol ships.

black sea cruises 2023

Circumstantial evidence suggests that two escorting ships included the Vasily Bykov . This is the ship which Russia says destroyed the 3 USVs. If so, then the target for the Ukrainian drones would likely have been the merchant ships. These are legitimate targets.

Arms Running Uninterrupted

On September 14 the Russian MOD reported that at about 05.00 local time, the Ukrainian Armed Forces attempted to attack the Black Sea Fleet patrol ship “Sergey Kotov” with five USVs. Once again they reported that all USVs were destroyed. Separately they reported that 3 USVs were destroyed by aircraft. It is too early to asses the reliability of these reports.

Yaz and Ursa Major are heading towards Istanbul and the Bosporus Strait, the only way to the Mediterranean. The escorting warships will have to turn around because Turkey bans warships from passing. But the merchant ships will likely be allowed to transit by Turkey. They will then return, with Ursa Major possibly carrying yet another important arms shipment to aid Russia’s war effort.

Possibly Ukraine will try to target them again. Similar attacks have been launched against Sparta-IV , but those too were repelled. Ursa Majo r appears far from safe.

Ukraine-Russia war: Putin sets conditions for ceasefire - but Ukraine says it is 'complete sham'

Vladimir Putin has promised a ceasefire if Ukraine withdraws its troops from occupied regions, saying Russia would be ready for talks "tomorrow". But Ukraine has dismissed his remarks as a "complete sham", while the US has said Moscow is in "no position" to dictate.

That brings an end to our coverage of the Ukraine war for this evening.

EU ambassadors have agreed to formally begin accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova later this month.

The Belgian EU presidency said talks would start on 25 June.

According to the presidency, the decision should be given the nod by finance and economy ministers at a meeting next Friday.

The European Council decided to open accession negotiations with Ukraine in December last year.

Last week, the EU said both countries had met the criteria needed to start formal discussions, with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal revealing his hope that talks would start this month.

Hot off the heels of his appearance at the G7 leaders' meeting in Italy, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Switzerland for the Ukraine peace summit aimed at exploring ways of ending the war in his country.

World leaders including Rishi Sunak, French President Emmanuel Macron and US vice president Kamala Harris are set to join Mr Zelenskyy at the summit.

But it's expected to fall short of its aim to isolate Moscow, with China among a group of countries choosing not to attend.

G7 nations have reaffirmed their commitment to support Ukraine "for as long as it takes".

A final statement from the summit in Italy saw leaders affirm their plan to finance a $50bn loan for Kyiv using "extraordinary revenues" from frozen Russian assets.

They said the move sends an "unmistakable signal" to Vladimir Putin as the war rages on.

Volodydmyr Zelenskyy called the decision a" vital step forward in providing sustainable support for Ukraine in winning this war".

Mr Putin, meanwhile, has condemned the freezing of Russian assets as "theft" and has vowed it "will not go unpunished".

According to US and French officials, the money could be in Kyiv's hands before the end of the year.

Ukraine has attacked Russia's border region of Belogorod, killing five people, according to Russian officials.

Regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said two bodies were pulled from the rubble of an apartment block in Shebekino.

News agencies cited emergency services as saying a third body was later found, after the alleged shelling caused a stairwell to collapse.

Reports also said a driver was killed when a drone hit their car in a nearby village, while a woman was reportedly killed in her home as it was hit by rocket fire in the village of Oktyabrsky.

Sky News cannot independently verify the reports.

Ukrainian forces have struck a military airfield in Russia, targeting warplanes and glide-bomb facilities used to launch deadly attacks against Ukraine, a security source has revealed.

The source said the operation last night was part of a "sustained campaign to degrade the Russian Air Force" just as Ukraine has done with Russia's Black Sea Fleet.

Satellite imagery shared by the source purported to show two SU-34 fighter-bombers at the Morozovsk airbase in southern Russia as well as a white structure before the attack.

A second image is purported to show the aftermath, with both aircraft and the structure destroyed.

There has been no official confirmation about the strikes from Ukraine.

They came battered and worn by battles back home for a few days by the sea seeking sanctuary and solace in a wellness resort turned summit venue.

The G7 leaders will leave fortified by some surprisingly robust diplomatic progress but potentially terminal doubts remain for the alliance.

They have sent Russia a clear message. They may individually be on borrowed time as leaders but the West  has Ukraine's back for as long as it takes.

And China's been on the sharp end of some particularly proactive diplomacy too.

Two signature deals send billions more aid to Ukraine. The allies overcame stark differences between themselves to forge a creative deal that uses interest from frozen Russia banking assets to send fifty billion more dollars to Kyiv by the year's end.

In Moscow the Russians did not conceal their fury at the prospect of their money being used against them.

And a ten year bilateral security pact between America and Ukraine is another blow to Vladimir Putin. He started this war to deter the expansion of the western military alliance. Yet again it is having the opposite effect. The pact is a bridge to Ukraine joining NATO, even if that is many many years still away.

The G7 warned China in a number of ways. The final communique criticised its belligerence in the South China Sea and admonished Beijing for quietly helping Putin's war effort by trading dual use products that could help bolster his war effort.

But the composition of this summit was also a message for Beijing. The G7 invited pretty much the entire G20 here except for China.  If you want to be in the club they were saying, not very subtly, then stop conniving with Putin and play by our rules.

In Beijing that will be infuriating.

The leaders have seemed all the better for their spell in the sunshine, spirits lifted before going home to face the music.

But what they cant do is dispel doubts about their future and that of the alliance.

Security pacts tend to survive changes of administration, Ukraine will have its $50bn by year's end.

But what will the G7 look like when they next meet a year from now?

Donald Trump looks increasingly likely to win the US election and Joe Biden's performance here will have nothing to reassure the allies. He has seemed vacant and distracted at times, older than ever.

Trump has no time for multilateral organisations. That was made abundantly clear in his first term in office. In his transactional zero sum game world view they make no sense.

A year from now he could be six months into destroying NATO, deserting Ukraine and dismantling the G7.

First time round for all his puerile antics, he could do limited damage at these summits contained by the likes of Merkel and Macron both at the height of their powers.

Olaf Scholz is no Merkel and may be gone by then, joining Sunak, Kishida and Trudeau perhaps too heading for the history books.  Macron is on the way to being a lame duck president hamstrung by a far right national assembly if current polling is correct.

The alliance is in peril like never before, however successful they've been holding it together for now.

Earlier we reported comments by Volodymyr Zelenskyy that a ceasefire offer put forward by Vladimir Putin cannot be trusted.

In an interview with our Italian partner network Sky TG24 , Mr Zelenskyy warned the Russian president would not stop his offensive, even if Ukraine agreed to hand over the regions Russia claims to have annexed.

He also drew a comparison between Mr Putin and Adolf Hitler's Nazi policies of expansion before the Second World War, saying:  "It is the same thing that Hitler used to do... this is why we should not trust these messages."

Watch the clip here...

Three Russian servicemen have reportedly died following an ammunition explosion in a Russian town about four miles north of the Ukraine border.

Shells from a thermobaric warhead, also called an aerosol bomb, exploded in Shebekino, as reported by the Russian Telegram channel Astra.

"Astra's sources in the region's emergency services reported that in the evening, ammunition from the Russian Solntsepyok MRLS thermobaric weapon system exploded in the suburb of Shebekino," the report said.

The cause of the explosion is unknown, but preliminary reports indicate it was "spontaneous".

Despite Astra's sources claiming three Russian servicemen died in the explosion, Shebekino's governor reported there were zero injuries .

Ten private households and one car were damaged, they said.

In a show of unity aimed at Vladimir Putin, G7 leaders meeting in Italy this week finally agreed to a deal to use profits from frozen Russian assets to provide around $50bn (£40bn) worth of support to Ukraine.

And in another significant announcement, Joe Biden signed a 10-year bilateral security deal between the US and Ukraine which Kyiv is calling "historic".

On this episode, Niall Paterson explores the impact these deals will have for Ukraine in its war against Russia with international editor Dominic Waghorn.
