The tour was good , our guide was very knowledgeable . Took us to the rapid whirlpools (note this is only to see them not to get on the bridge ) . The best part was the hornblower boat ride into the falls . Amazing experience for the prize this was great I felt we could of spent more time at the falls however this tour ensures you’re back in town before 7pm to enjoy afternoon things . The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Niagara Falls – What to Do + MAP

Home | Travel | North America | United States | New York | Niagara Falls (US) | The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Niagara Falls – What to Do + MAP

Visiting Niagara Falls  is something you must do at least once in your life. Since Napoleon Bonaparte’s brother celebrated his honeymoon here more than 200 years ago, the place has been crowded with tourists. Even after all these years, this is one of the most impressive places on earth and something you must see with your own eyes.

If it’s your first time  going to Niagara Falls , be aware that the falls are on the Niagara River between Ontario, Canada, and New York state. The American side consists of the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, while the Canadian side boasts the 164-foot Horseshoe Falls.

Visiting Niagara Falls

The ultimate guide to visiting Niagara Falls

Besides being beautiful, Niagara Falls also has an interesting history, as it was the first state park in the United States. In 1895, the world’s first large hydroelectric power station opened here, and just a year later the famous engineer Nikola Tesla unveiled his direct current (DC) system, changing the way Buffalo, NY lit up at night.

If you are thinking of traveling here, this article will include information about  what to do in Niagara Falls  so you can make the most of your visit.

How to visit Niagara Falls – Plan your Niagara Falls vacation

First, you should know that you can  visit Niagara Falls  from the United States or Canada . We visited them from both sides, and if you have time, I highly recommend doing it this way.

On the American side of Niagara Falls , you can enjoy beautiful natural areas, while the Canadian side of Niagara Falls has the best views of the most famous waterfall in North America.

If you don’t have time, don’t worry, because there are awesome attractions on each side that you can add to your  Niagara Falls itinerary .

In this Niagara Falls guide you’ll find:

Moreover, at the end of the article, you will find the most frequently asked questions related to a Niagara Falls vacation .

If you’re not sure  where Niagara Falls is located , it’s within the course of the Niagara River, specifically between the province of Ontario, Canada, and New York State. From the United States, the closest city to Niagara Falls is Buffalo, NY, about 20 miles away. To go to Niagara Falls from New York City , you will have to travel about 400 miles, which is about a 7-hour drive. But it’s completely worth it since it’s one of the best things to do in New York State .

Most people who take a  trip to Niagara Falls, Canada  do so from Toronto, which is a little over 90 miles away. That said, the cities of Hamilton and Mississauga are a bit closer, so they’re two other options .

Which side of Niagara Falls is better? – American side vs. Canadian side

If you’re short on time and can only visit one side of the falls, don’t worry. There are plenty of  things to do in Niagara Falls  on both the American and Canadian sides.

There is a huge push for  tourism in Niagara Falls , so below I’m including the highlights for each side. If you can, I recommend booking  this full-day tour , which goes to the most popular attractions in Niagara Falls, New York, and Ontario. Just remember to bring your passport and/or visa to cross the border.

Niagara Falls Canadian side

If you’re interested in sightseeing, a  Niagara Falls tour of the Canadian side  is your best choice. Not only are most of the tourist attractions there, but the views of the falls are better.

Niagara Falls itinerary

There are many  unique things to do in Niagara Falls, Canada , which is why many tourists say it resembles an amusement park. The mix of entertainment venues and leisurely outdoor spaces is a hit with visitors.

In Ontario, you can stand directly in front of the falls, and there are several hotels and casinos nearby. While these large accommodations are a bit imposing on the natural environment, the waterfalls provide a great backdrop while you’re staying overnight.

Niagara Falls U.S. side

For those who want more outdoor recreation and nature activities, a trip to  Niagara Falls, USA  won’t disappoint.

Tourism in Niagara Falls

While the views of the falls aren’t as spectacular on the American side, there are still plenty of things to do around this beautiful natural environment.

For example, Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in the country, so it’s worth visiting. I’ll share more  Niagara Falls tips  later, but keep in mind that the New York side offers more opportunities to connect with nature and get some fresh air away from the crowds .

Niagara Falls map – your best guide for visiting Niagara Falls

To help you  plan your trip to Niagara Falls , you’ll want a map of the attractions on each side. This  map of Niagara Falls will help you quickly locate the most popular activities and landmarks in Ontario and New York.

Things to do and places to visit in Niagara Falls

If you’re still not sure where to  go in Niagara Falls , check out these main attractions in Canada and the United States.

Things to do in Niagara Falls, Canada

We also have more  Niagara Falls tips  in our guide to  visiting Niagara Falls, Canada . To make the most of our trip, we booked   this tour , which includes a heli-tour, Voyage to the Falls boat ride, a meal at Skylon Tower, and a few other activities. It was the best way to see the falls as a first-time visitor, so I highly recommend it.

Voyage to the Falls, the official Niagara Falls boat tour on the Canadian side

A  Niagara Falls boat tour  is one of the best ways to see the majesty of the falls. If you’re on the Canadian side, Voyage to the Falls is the best attraction, and you can get your ticket  here .

Voyage to the Falls, visit Niagara Falls

This tour gets you as close to the Horseshoe Falls as possible, giving you a one-of-a-kind view of the rushing waters. The boat goes through the Niagara Gorge and passes the American and Bridal Veil Falls before inching closer to the Horseshoe Falls.

The ride will leave you speechless, and you can either stay inside the cabin or put on a poncho and go out to the deck. If you’re interested in Voyage to the Falls and other attractions on the Canadian side, I recommend booking the  full-day tour  I mentioned earlier.

Journey Behind the Falls, the best way to get close to Niagara Falls

Journey Behind the Falls  is one of the top Niagara Falls tourist attractions. As the name suggests, it takes you just behind the Horseshoe Falls, offering one of the  best ways to see Niagara Fall s up close.

Journey Behind the Falls, visit to Niagara Falls, Canada

You’ll enter at the Table Rock Center next to the falls, then take an elevator 130 feet down to the underground tunnels. This is one of the most striking experiences that you can’t replicate anywhere else, so be sure to  book your ticket  in advance.

Have dinner at the Skylon Tower, the best thing to do at Niagara Falls

While you’re on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, be sure to visit Skylon Tower .

This  Niagara Falls observation tower  is nearly 520 feet tall, so it offers the best panoramic perspective of the waterfalls. Even the elevators, locally known as “Yellow bugs,” are fully paned in glass so you get stellar views.

Skylon Tower, what to do in Niagara Falls

If you are going to visit the Skylon tower you have two options:  reserve your ticket  to the 360° viewpoint, or dine at the Tower’s Revolving Dining Room or Summit Suite Buffet. Both restaurants have a great menu; we ate at the buffet and would go again, for sure.

We had dinner as part of this  combo tour , which also included the Hornblower cruise, Journey Behind the Falls, and a helicopter ride.

Zipline to the Falls, a fun thing to do at Niagara Falls

Soaring over the water on a zipline is one of the  top things to do at Niagara Falls , and an experience you won’t ever forget.

Zipline To The Falls, Niagara Falls zipline

The Niagara Falls zipline travels almost 2,200 feet across the Niagara Gorge to the base of the Horseshoe Falls. While it can seem terrifying and not the best for people who suffer from vertigo, it’s completely safe and even has an automatic braking system.

You can take photos from the observation platform and even fly down the zipline at the same time as your friends. Just be sure to  book in advance  so you’re sure you can experience this activity when you visit!

Niagara Falls Helicopter Tour, the best way to visit Niagara Falls

For another aerial perspective, consider a  Niagara Falls helicopter tour .  This 12-minute flight  soars over the Niagara Whirlpool and the Rainbow Bridge, which connects the Canadian and American sides. You’ll also be able to see Queen Victoria Park, Skylon Tower, and all of Toronto from a birds-eye view.

Niagara Falls Helicopter Tour, travel tips Niagara Falls

A helicopter ride is one of the top activities that I recommend, and you can also embark on this adventure  from the American side . Personally, we went with the  combo tour  that also included a boat ride and dinner at Skylon Tower.

Enjoy the views from the Niagara SkyWheel

A trip to Niagara Falls, Ontario is not complete without a ride on the  SkyWheel . At nearly 165 feet tall, it’s the largest observation wheel in Canada. It’s in the nearby entertainment district of Clifton Hill and boasts amazing views of the falls and beyond.

SkyWheel, traveling to Niagara Falls

A ride on the Skywheel lasts about 10 minutes, and the cabins are fully enclosed and climate-controlled, so you can ride comfortably all year round. If you’re wondering  where to view Niagara Falls at night , the Skywheel is the top choice.

It’s also a popular place to see the famous Niagara Falls fireworks, so I recommend  booking a ticket  in advance, especially if you want to ride at a specific date or time.

Things to do in Niagara Falls, NY

If you want to  visit Niagara Falls , NY, there are a few points of interest you shouldn’t miss. During our trip, we opted for  this tour  because it included all the iconic spots in just a few hours. We also have a guide to   visiting Niagara Falls, USA   that you can check out.

Terrapin Point at Goat Island, the best place to see the Horseshoe Falls

One of my to p Niagara Falls tips  is to get off the beaten path and check out  Terrapin Point Lookout on Goat Island . Since the lookout is on the western end of the island, you’ll get awesome views of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls and Niagara Gorge.

Terrapin Point at Goat Island, Niagara Falls US side

Goat Island is on the Niagara River, so you have to cross a bridge to get there. While you’re there, spend some time on the walking trails or check out the Cave of the Winds, another popular place for  tourism in Niagara Falls , which I’ll mention later.

Maid of the Mist, the official Niagara Falls boat tour on the American side

One of the best ways to experience  Niagara Falls, USA  is by taking a boat tour. The American tour is called the  Maid of the Mist  boat ride and is one of the most popular attractions on this side of the falls.

Maid of the Mist, Niagara Falls how to visit

You’ll travel along the Niagara Gorge and make your way out into the Canadian waters briefly to get a spectacular view of the waterfalls before returning to the  Niagara Falls U.S. side .

The boats depart every 15 minutes, and the trip takes about 20 minutes. I suggest reserving a spot in advance or booking  this tour , which also includes access to the Cave of the Winds.

Cave of the Winds, the best thing to do on Niagara Falls’ U.S. side

The  Cave of the Winds  is another popular  Niagara Falls U.S. attraction . It’s a series of platforms that lead to the base of the Bridal Veil Falls, behind which you can see a natural cave that was discovered in the 1830s.

Cave of the Winds, travel tips for Niagara Falls

As you traverse the wooden bridges and stairs, you’ll make your way across the Niagara Gorge. Wear shoes with good traction and keep your poncho handy because you will get wet. The conditions as you approach the falls are similar to those of a hurricane, and the observation platform is aptly named Hurricane Deck.

Before descending 165 feet to the wet and windy platforms, you can explore The World Changed Here Pavilion, a multimedia exhibition that explains the history of Niagara Falls. We enjoyed this attraction and did it as part of this  half-day tour .

American Falls, one of the best places to visit in Niagara Falls

While the Horseshoe Falls in Canada are the most famous, the Bridal Veil Falls and American Falls are also very beautiful.

American Falls, things to do in Niagara Falls

The  American Falls  are nearly 100 feet tall and are quite an impressive sight from the  U.S. side of Niagara Falls . The best place to see them is from the Prospect Point viewing area. You should also check out the view from Luna Island since it’s between the American and Bridal Veil Falls. The island isn’t that big or crowded, so it’s a unique place to see the U.S. waterfalls.

Old Fort Niagara, a must-see on Niagara Falls’ U.S. side

Old Fort Niagara  is another interesting place to visit on the U.S. side. It’s located in Youngstown, where the Niagara River flows into Lake Ontario. It’s about a 20-minute drive to get there, or you could book  this tour , which includes an optional Maid of the Mist ride.

Old Fort Niagara, visiting Niagara Fall

The fort is a colonial fortification built by the French Empire in 1726. Along with the historic building, there is also a visitor center that functions as a museum. Everything is contained within Fort Niagara State Park, which supports  tourism in Niagara Falls . If you’re looking for some more natural sightseeing, this area is great, as there are several nearby hiking trails.

The best time to visit Niagara Falls

You might be wondering  when the best time is to go to Niagara Falls , but the truth is that this place is beautiful any time of the year. Depending on what you want to do and which attractions you want to see, one season may be better than another.

For example, all the tourist attractions are open in the summer, but it’s also the most crowded time to visit and it can get pretty hot. You’ll have to book your accommodation and tour tickets months in advance, and even then, it’ll be quite expensive.

Information on Niagara Falls

If you decide to visit in the spring, you’ll be able to see some of the tourist attractions as well as get a cheaper price for a hotel. While it’s less crowded this time of year, the weather is unpredictable. We visited in May and were lucky, but you never know.

Fall is the  best time to go to Niagara Falls  if you’re more interested in the natural surroundings. The autumn colors and foliage are gorgeous, the weather is nice, and there aren’t many tourists.

Finally, you might not think that a winter trip to Niagara Falls is a good idea since most of the attractions are closed. However, when it’s cold and the falls freeze over, it makes for one of the most extraordinary sights, and it’s something we hope to see for ourselves soon!

How to get to Niagara Falls – parking at Niagara Falls

If you’re not sure  how to visit Niagara Falls , the easiest way is by car. Most people who  travel to Niagara Falls  in Canada arrive from Toronto, which is about 90 miles away. That said, the cities of Hamilton and Mississauga are closer, so those are two other options.

If you’re wondering  how far Niagara Falls is from New York City , it’s about a 7-hour drive. Those who visit the American side usually come from Buffalo , which is just 20 miles away from the falls. That isn’t to say that you can’t take advantage of a trip to NYC by also visiting Niagara Falls. Just be aware that it’s a very long drive and it may be better to book a tour. We’ll list some options below.

You can get a rental car for your trip or go in your own vehicle, but you’ll run into the problem that parking isn’t free at Niagara Falls. On both the American and Canadian sides, you must pay for parking, unless your accommodation has a free parking lot. Considering this, it might be easier to book a tour that includes transportation or hotel pick-up and drop-off .

If you don’t have your own car or don’t feel like driving, you can get to Niagara Falls from Toronto, New York, and Buffalo by booking a tour that includes transportation. Here are the best options :

Niagara Falls from Toronto

There are two  Niagara Falls tours from Toronto  that I recommend.

If you want to go straight to the falls, I recommend  this tour , which goes to the most iconic attractions like Skylon Tower, Niagara Parkway, and the Niagara Whirlpool. Along with incredible views of the falls, you’ll also get a wine tasting.

Another option is  this night tour  with a boat cruise. In addition to seeing the falls up close, you’ll experience Niagara Falls’ magical evening lighting. The tour also includes a few tourist attractions and a wine tasting, so it’s the perfect choice if you don’t mind returning to Toronto after dark.

Niagara Falls from New York City

There are several great  Niagara Falls tours from New York City , depending on how much time you have.

My first choice is this  one-day bus tour   with admission to the Maid of the Mist and a few other attractions.

For those who have more time, I recommend  this two-day tour . Along with a ride on the Maid of the Mist and other interesting attractions, on your way to Niagara Falls you will stop at Watkins Glen State Park. This package also includes a nighttime viewing of the falls and an overnight stay at a hotel.

Finally, you might be interested in   this three-day tour , which includes a visit to Niagara Falls and several Toronto attractions.

Niagara Falls from Buffalo

Lastly, if you’re looking for a  bus to Niagara Falls from Buffalo , NY,  this  is the best option. Unlike the tours from Toronto and NYC, this booking is for transportation only, so you’re free to visit the falls and attractions that interest you.

I suggest spending at least one night in Niagara Falls so you can enjoy the beautiful lighting and fireworks. Seeing the falls in the evening is a totally different experience that you shouldn’t miss. If you’re looking for  hotels in Niagara Falls , here are the top recommendations.

Hotels in Canada at Niagara Falls

We stayed overnight  at a Niagara Falls hotel in Canada , the  Sheraton on the Falls , and the views from our hotel room were incredible. As this is one of the top accommodations in Niagara Falls, I suggest booking your room in advance.

Here’s more information on the Sheraton and other top  hotels on Niagara Falls’ Canadian side :

Sheraton on the Falls

I have to start with the  Sheraton on the Falls  because it really blew us away. The rooms are great and some of them offer spectacular views of the waterfalls. While these particular rooms are a bit more expensive, it was worth it to us to get stunning views from the comfort of our bed.

If you’re looking for luxury, the  Embassy Suites by Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview  is a perfect choice. The accommodation is just 300 feet from the falls, so it offers a convenient location and unbeatable views.

The hotel also boasts awesome amenities like a breakfast buffet and complimentary drinks and snacks. Besides the hotel rooms, the facilities include a couple of restaurants (TGI Fridays and Keg Steakhouse), a Starbucks, an indoor pool, and a gym.

From the hotel, it’s just a 10-minute walk to the Skylon Observation Tower, so this is one of the best places to stay if you want to be close to the action.

The Oakes Hotel Overlooking the Falls

The  Oakes Hotel Overlooking the Falls  is aptly named, as it provides wonderful views of the Canadian falls. The hotel has an observation room where you can enjoy incredible views without the crowds.

It’s next to the  Falls Incline Railway , which connects to  Table Rock  and  Journey Behind the Falls . Along with its nice location, this accommodation has rooms with waterfall views, although they cost a bit more.

That said, if you stay here, you can take advantage of some great amenities, such as a living room with a fireplace, an indoor pool, a hot tub, a sauna, and a fitness center. There is also an Applebee’s on the premises.

Tower Hotel at Fallsview

The  Tower Hotel at Fallsview  is another beautiful accommodation in Niagara Falls, Canada. Along with comfortable rooms, the hotel also has a decent restaurant, so it’s quite a bargain for the price.

This hotel also connects to the Fallsview Casino, so it’s a great place to stay if you plan on visiting the casino in the evening.

Hotels in Niagara Falls, NY

We also stayed at a  Niagara Falls hotel  in New York. which was nice because we arrived at night. We spent a restful night in our hotel room and got up early in the morning so we could go straight to the attractions.

Our room was at the  Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino , and although the views weren’t as impressive as the Canadian hotel, if you ask for a room on a high floor, you’ll get beautiful views of the falls. You can even see the Niagara Falls fireworks without leaving your room.

Here’s more information about the Seneca resort and other top  hotels on Niagara Falls’ American side :

Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino

The   Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino  is one of the best hotels to stay in while visiting New York’s Niagara Falls. The resort includes a casino, fitness center, sauna, massage services, a hot tub, an indoor pool, a cafeteria, and several restaurants. Our room was beautiful and immaculate. It’s all-around one of the best hotels on the American side of Niagara Falls.

Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino, Niagara NY attractions

Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino, one of the best hotels in Niagara Falls, NY

Best of all, it only took us 20 minutes to walk to Terrapin Point, one of the top  places to visit near Niagara Falls, USA . If you stay at this hotel, I suggest requesting a room on an upper floor. While you can’t see the falls directly from the hotel, you’ll get beautiful views. Plus, you can see the nighttime fireworks from your room, which is convenient if you don’t feel like going out!

Hyatt Place Niagara Falls

If you’re looking for another good hotel to stay at in Niagara Falls, USA, the   Hyatt Place Niagara Falls  is a great option.

This accommodation is located a little closer to Niagara Falls on the U.S. side, which is very convenient. Also, it is next to Old Falls Street, a small entertainment district where you’ll find great good, shopping, shows, and family activities. If you’re not sure  what to do in Niagara Falls, New York , you can always go there.

Hyatt Place Niagara Falls is also close to the Rainbow Bridge, which you can take to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.

While the prices are similar, this hotel isn’t as nice as the Seneca Resort, but it’s still a good option if you need a place to stay overnight.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Niagara Falls New York

The   DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Niagara Falls New York   is another accommodation that I recommend on the American side of Niagara Falls. While it’s a bit further away than the previous two hotels, the location is still very good.

The rooms come with nice amenities and they’re very spacious. Some of the rooms offer lovely views of the Niagara River, while others overlook the city. I suggest requesting a riverside room, as it’s a more pleasant view.

Overall, this is a hotel in Niagara Falls, USA, that you can book without hesitation. It’s comfortable, affordable, and clean.

Sheraton Niagara Falls

The   Sheraton Niagara Falls   is one of the hotels in Niagara Falls, New York, that I recommend if you want to be close to the falls without breaking the bank. While it’s not the cheapest option, the price is quite good for the location.

Also, the hotel has a connective corridor to the Seneca Resort, so it’s super easy to go to the casino and enjoy some of the facilities.

The unique thing about the Sheraton hotel is its Reed Beach Club, which has the largest indoor pool in Niagara Falls. So, not only is this a good place to get some rest, but it’s got plenty of amenities to keep you entertained during your stay.

Wyndham Garden at Niagara Falls

The last hotel that I recommend is the  Wyndham Garden at Niagara Falls , which is a great option for travelers on a budget.

For an inexpensive hotel in Niagara Falls, USA, the location isn’t bad at all. Plus, it’s the best choice if you’re planning on walking over to the Canadian side of the falls since it’s just five minutes from the bridge.

8 Tips to visit Niagara Falls

If you’ve read this far, you should have all the information you need for a  trip to Niagara Falls . Still, I’m including some final tips here so you can make the most of your visit.

1. Plan to visit both sides of Niagara Falls

Instead of wondering  which side of Niagara Falls is better , plan to visit both the American and Canadian falls.

Travel tips Niagara Falls

The easiest way to see both sides is by crossing the Rainbow Bridge. That said, you’re still crossing an international border, so you need the proper documentation, such as a passport,  visa or Electronic System for Travel Authorization . You can check below what type of documentation you need.

If you’re renting a car, check first to see if they allow you to enter another country with the rental vehicle.

2. Book at least two days to visit Niagara Falls

Both sides of the falls are interesting and worth visiting, so make sure you book plenty of time. At least, I recommend spending two days visiting Niagara Falls, and that should give you time to check the most important attractions.

3. Stay in a hotel with a view of Niagara Falls

While there are different  Niagara Falls hotels  on the Canadian and American sides, I highly recommend booking a room with a view of the falls. Fortunately, several hotels offer waterfall views, so try to reserve one on a higher floor.

Niagara falls hotels

On the Canadian side, the hotels with the best views are the  Sheraton on the Falls ,  Embassy Suites ,  The Oakes Hotel Overlooking the Falls ,  Tower Hotel at Fallsview , and  Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview Hotel and Suites .

If your  Niagara Falls itinerary  includes an overnight stay on the American side, I recommend the  Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino . Just be sure to reserve a room on a higher floor so you can fully see the falls.

4. Leave everything that can’t get wet in the car/hotel

There are some areas where it’s impossible not to get wet by the  Niagara waterfalls , even if you wear a poncho. That said, don’t let a bit of splash and spray deter you from getting an impressive view of the falls.

One of the best  travel tips for Niagara Falls  is to leave behind anything that could be damaged by water. Either keep it in the car or your hotel room or seal it in a waterproof bag if you’re keeping it on you.

5. Take the helicopter tour of Niagara Falls

A  helicopter tour of Niagara Falls, NY  is an unforgettable experience and the best way to get a good look at the falls. I recommend  this tour  from the American side. While it’s only a 10-minute flight, every second is mesmerizing and you can get a sense of the falls’ magnitude.

If you’re on the  Canadian side of Niagara Falls , I suggest booking  this tour . The 12-minute flight soars over the Horseshoe, American, and Bridal Veil Falls, and the helicopter is one of the quietest of its kind.

6. Arrive early to find a good spot to watch the Fireworks

The Niagara Falls fireworks are one of the most popular things to see on summer evenings. The show starts every night at 10 pm, although you’ll want to find a spot 30-40 minutes beforehand. If you’re not sure where to view Niagara Falls at night , I suggest the Skywheel (at the Canada side) or Prospect Point (at the American side).

Where to view Niagara Falls at night

7. Treat yourself to a Niagara Falls buffet dinner

Most Canada  Niagara Falls itineraries  include a visit to Skylon Tower. Besides being a wonderful viewpoint overlooking the falls, the Tower has two excellent restaurants: the Revolving Dining Room and the Summit Suite Buffet.

Ehere to eat in Niagara Falls

We ate dinner at the buffet, and we would definitely eat there again. It’s one of the  top things to do at Niagara Falls , so be sure to  book a ticket  to the Tower in advance. Or do what we did and take  this lunch tour  with a helicopter flight and boat cruise.

The Top of the Falls Restaurant is another place where you can eat while enjoying incredible views of the falls. This one is on Goat Island, on the American side.

8. Come back to Niagara Falls in winter

As I mentioned, the  best time to go to Niagara Falls  depends on what you want to do and see here. While the summertime is popular with most tourists, there is something special about visiting in the winter.

There are way fewer tourists, the prices are lower, and the atmosphere is calmer and more peaceful. That said, I don’t recommend a winter trip for your first time in Niagara Falls since most of the attractions are closed.

Is Niagara Falls worth visiting?

Is it more cost effective to book tours or do the activities on your own? We like to move at our own pace and not sure a tour itinerary is worth it.

' src=

Good question. It depends on what you want to see. Visiting the attractions on your own is generally cheaper, but there are many tours and excursions that offer discounted rates and additional benefits like guides, snacks, etc. Hope that helps!

I am so happy after reading this information because I like to enjoy traveling too much. But this time I will decided to enjoy cheap tours las vegas with family.

That sounds great! Believe it or not, there are lots of family attractions in Las Vegas , so I’m sure you’ll have a great time!

What’ is like in May to visit & west are Covid restrictions if any? Are booster shots & vaccines mandatory? What’s the closest airport to the Canada side Marriott or Hilton at the falls?

Hi Eileen, May is a wonderful time to visit! The weather won’t be as hot and there should be fewer crowds. Niagara Falls is following current COVID restrictions, but proof of vaccination isn’t mandatory. The closest airport is the Niagara Falls International Airport.

Niagara Falls Canada – Respect Our Planet

Learn more about how Niagara City Cruises is committed to respecting our crew, guests, and the natural environment. Click here to learn more.

Niagara Falls is a natural phenomenon that attracts millions of tourists every year. Whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation, there are plenty of things to do in Niagara Falls that will make your trip unforgettable.

Niagara Falls History

The history of Niagara Falls is as vast and beautiful as the falls themselves. About 12,000 years ago, erosion from melting Ice Age glaciers created the Niagara River’s majestic waterfalls, which run along the border between Canada and the United States. These natural marvels are one of North America’s most popular tourist destinations in Niagara Falls State Park.

Due to its location on the southern end of Lake Erie and at the beginning of Lake Ontario, this region has always been an important transportation corridor for travelers heading westward across North America.

Fun Activities in Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls has something fun for everyone in your group, regardless of age. Here are a few of the most popular activities people do when visiting Niagara Falls.

Take a Boat Cruise

Niagara Falls is best experienced by taking a boat cruise. However, get closer than most tourists by taking an evening cruise where you can see how different lights play off each other at night. Niagara City Cruises is the official supplier to Niagara Parks, providing Canada’s only Niagara Falls boat tour experience.

Niagara City Cruises – Voyage to the Falls

The 20-minute Voyage to the Falls boat tour will take you on the journey of a lifetime! Enjoy breathtaking views of the Niagara Gorge, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, and come face-to-face with the famous Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Feel the thunderous roar and incredible power of one of the world’s most stunning natural wonders.

Niagara City Cruises – Falls Fireworks

Marvel at the nightly Niagara Falls Illumination light show from the water on the Falls Fireworks cruise . Every evening beginning at dusk, Niagara Falls is transformed into an incredible, multi-coloured water and light masterpiece. Then at 10:00 pm each night from Victoria Day weekend to Canadian Thanksgiving (weather permitting), enjoy an unforgettable evening in Niagara Falls with a jaw-dropping fireworks displays against the backdrop of the American and Canadian Horseshoe Falls.

Niagara City Cruises is located at 5920 Niagara Pkwy, Niagara Falls, ON L2E 6X8, Canada.

Outdoor Recreation

Niagara Falls parks, trails and gardens are easily accessible to biking, hiking, walking – or even just a nice afternoon picnic. The Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens offers 40 hectares (99 acres) of beautifully maintained gardens to explore and is home to the Butterfly Conservatory , providing a truly enriching experience for all seasons. The heart of the Niagara Parks, Queen Victoria Park celebrates every season in style with a visual spectacle, from daffodils and tulips in spring to tree branches covered with the freezing mist of the Falls in winter. Niagara gardens such as the Parks Floral Showhouse , Centennial Lilac Garden , Floral Clock , Dufferin Islands , Oakes Garden Theatre and Queenston Heights Park provide inspiration and delight. Whether by foot or bike, discover 56 kilometers (35 miles) of historical and horticultural sights along the Niagara River Recreational Trail , described by Sir Winston Churchill as “the prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world.” The Recreational Trail connects Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake , meandering through parkland with views of the Niagara River and winding past places of historical and cultural interest, Niagara Falls, wineries, lookout points and beautiful homes.

Book a Tour

Local companies offer sightseeing tours of Niagara and the Falls, while visitors may also indulge a particular interest with a themed Niagara tour. Niagara wine tours traverse the region in search of the perfect Chardonnay, double decker tours lend a different perspective to the city, or Niagara adventure tours take visitors on a whirlwind of the area’s most exciting attractions.

Taking a tour in Niagara Falls will allow you to interact with knowledgeable tour guides that can give you all the valuable tid- bits of everything Niagara. Often times they take the burden a way of finding your way, parking and in some cases front of the line options at Niagara Falls attractions. Taking a combination tour between Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls is a great way to spend the week in Niagara.

Go Shopping

Head to the Canada One Factory Outlet on Lundy’s Lane with over 20 brand name stores or visit the Outlet Collection in Niagara-on-the-Lake , a unique open air collection of over 100+ brand name stores.

Within the heart of the tourist district there are also many shopping options. On Clifton Hill there are a number of shops where you can pick up souvenirs from your visit to Niagara Falls.

If you are looking for shopping decadence then we would recommend the Fallsview Casino Resort Shopping Galleria , great shops integrated with great restaurants and a Casino right there for a one stop shopping experience.

See the Falls from Skylon Tower

The Skylon Tower is a 456-foot tower with a 360-degree observation deck, giving fantastic views of the falls. You can also see Lake Ontario, Navy Island, and Toronto.

Walk Across the Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is a pedestrian suspension bridge that spans the Niagara River between Rainbow Boulevard in Niagara Falls, New York, and Prospect Avenue in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

The bridge was built in 1938 by the Canadian Pacific Railway company to carry passengers between both sides of the river. Still, it is now open to pedestrians 24 hours a day and year-round. Canada and the United States have designated the structure as a National Historic Civil Engineering Site. In addition, it won an award for its beauty at its dedication ceremony.

Take a Helicopter Tour

Helicopter tours are a great way to see the falls from a different perspective. While you won’t be able to fly directly over the falls, you can see them from above. You’ll also get breathtaking views of Lake Ontario and its surrounding towns. Book your tour in advance because they sell out quickly on busy days.

Wineries, Breweries and Distilleries in Niagara Falls

Niagara Ontario Canada has become famous for its wines. Whether you are looking for wineries in the Niagara Region, or a specific winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake , Niagara is gaining international recognition as ‘must visit’ destination to enjoy a beautiful country escape with a bit of food and drink. Twenty-five vineyards dot the landscape just 15 to 20 minutes outside Niagara Falls, Canada in quiet and charming Niagara on-the-Lake. The entire Niagara wine region along the shores of Lake Ontario is home to over 50 wineries. Discover the best of the region’s vineyards by following the Wine Route of Ontario through the countryside by car, bike or guided tour . Many Niagara wineries have restaurants, where they pair their fine wines with regional cuisine, and an overnight outing can easily be arranged at nearby a bed-and-breakfast or inn for a Niagara Falls romantic getaway . And if you fall in love with our wine, consider planning a Niagara vacation around one of our popular annual Niagara festivals . The Niagara Wine Festival, which occurs annually in autumn, includes tours and tastings at Niagara vineyards, concerts, Niagara cuisine, artisan shows, and family entertainment. The Niagara Icewine Festival in January celebrates Ontario’s most famous wine in a winter wonderland setting, and the Niagara New Vintage Festival in summer gives visitors a chance to be the first to try the year’s wines.

Visit Old Fort Erie

Old Fort Erie is a National Historic Site of Canada. It was built in 1812, making it one of the first buildings in Fort Erie. This fort was a key site during the War of 1812 and played an important part in Canadian history.

This remarkable site features three main attractions:

The restored Officers’ Quarters: houses exhibits that discuss life within a military garrison.

The Blockhouse: a fortified structure with artifacts from several wars, including American Independence, War of 1812, and World War II.

The Museum exhibits military life, including uniforms and weapons used by soldiers.

Ride the Niagara SkyWheel

If you like to get out of your comfort zone, then the Niagara SkyWheel is for you. The tallest observation wheel in Canada, the SkyWheel, is located on Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls. It has 42 air-conditioned gondolas that can fit up to 8 people each and offers spectacular views of both sides of the falls (especially at night). The best part? It’s open year-round.

Dine Looking at the Falls

Table Rock House Restaurant is located in the Table Rock complex, known for its views of Niagara Falls. The restaurant has a seasonal outdoor patio and indoor seating with great views of the falls. So whether you sit in the dining room or at the bar, you can enjoy your meal while looking out at one of nature’s most legendary displays: Niagara Falls.

Experience the Theatre in Niagara Falls

When looking for theatre or shows in Niagara Falls, there’s an eclectic choice of Niagara entertainment for the entire family at one of our many theatres. Enjoy a Las Vegas style magic show at the Greg Frewin Theatre , or see dramatic productions chronicling the history of Niagara Falls at the Niagara Falls Adventure Theatre . From family-friendly entertainment to a couples-night-out, select from one of these shows for a well-rounded Niagara Falls getaway.

If you’re a theatre buff then you’ve heard of the famous Shaw Festival Theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake . Only minutes away from Niagara Falls, the Shaw Theatre host an amazing selection of must-see live theatre productions.

What is the Best Time of Year to See Niagara Falls?

The peak tourist season is summer. However, spring and fall provide for a quiet getaway if you prefer not to deal with crowds and long lines.

However, not to be overlooked, Niagara Falls has a breathtaking calm during winter when ice and snow turn the Falls into a majestic winter castle.

The weather at Niagara Falls can dramatically affect whether your trip will go smoothly or turn into a disaster zone. Between June and September (and even into early October), the average temperature is in the 80s. Spring and fall temperatures range from 40F to 70F, while the cold Canadian wind keeps winter below zero.

Make sure to wear layers no matter when you visit Niagara Falls, so you are prepared for any weather changes.

Is Niagara Falls in Canada or New York?

Niagara Falls is located in both countries because it lies on the border between Canada and the United States. However, activities, dining, accommodations, and shopping vary significantly between the Canadian and American sides.

Do I Need a Passport to Go to Niagara Falls, Canada?

Yes. A Passport (or a Passport Card or Enhanced Driver’s License if coming by land) is required for crossing the border into Canada unless you are age 15 or younger. Please visit the government website for any further details.

How to plan the ultimate outdoors-y adventure in Niagara Falls

Even though it’s less than two hours from Canada’s largest metropolis, the Niagara region is abounding in pristine natural experiences – many of them unique to this corner of the world.

Niagara is full of spots to enjoy the natural world, including the bloom-filled Floral Showhouse. SUPPLIED

Think: seeing the world’s most powerful waterfalls from a rare vantage point, or riding a cable car over 200 feet in the air, a whirlpool swirling below.

Niagara Parks’ Adventure Pass Plus – which gives you access to 10+ attractions – helps any outdoor enthusiast plan their weekend getaway. Plus, at over 50 per cent off what it would cost to purchase those entry tickets individually, it saves you money, too.

Here’s everything you’ll want to explore for the ultimate outdoors-y day (or longer stay) in Niagara Falls.

Get up close to one of the natural world's wonders with Niagara Parks' Journey Behind The Falls.

Witness the power of Niagara Falls

The best place to start when experiencing the rush and excitement of the Falls, is Niagara Parks’ Journey Behind the Falls attraction. Here, you’ll descend 125 feet below ground via elevator and then walk 150 feet through bedrock tunnels, where you’ll feel the thunderous vibration of the Falls long before you see them.

And when you do finally arrive directly underneath the cascading power above, snap photos at the iconic lower observation deck or one of the viewing portals behind the cataract. This is the closest you’ll ever get to the Falls; and with the rushing water travelling over 65 kilometres per hour, you’re sure to get a little wet. Don’t worry, your admission includes a biodegradable rain poncho.

Less than a 10-minute walk from Journey Behind the Falls is the Niagara Parks Power Station + Tunnel, the first major hydroelectric power plant on the Canadian side of the Niagara River. Today, you’ll find restored artifacts and informative exhibits inside that give visitors a first-hand look at how the plant used the power of water to generate electricity for over a century.

Then you’ll take another elevator ride, this time 180 feet below ground to a 2,200-foot-long tunnel which leads to a newly built viewing platform. Incredibly, the tunnel was built in 1901 when the power station was constructed with just lanterns, dynamite, pickaxes and shovels.

Depending on the time of your visit, the Power Station offers newly added night and daytime experiences including a new bilingual self-guided audio tour with admission.

The nighttime experience at the station includes evening access to the Tunnel, activated with spectacular new LED lighting, projected archival images and sound. After exploring the power station's 2,200-foot-long underground Tunnel, guests can experience an exclusive illuminated view of Niagara Falls from the observation platform at the edge of the Niagara River, as well as a prime viewing spot for fireworks, which take place at the Falls each night during the summer months.

Further down the road from the Falls, you can explore the teal-blue waters of the Niagara River. The White Water Walk , a quarter-mile-long pathway along the edge of the river gives you plenty of vantage points of Niagara’s Class 6 white water rapids, some of the wildest in all of North America.

Then you’re going to head up – way up – for an unforgettable ride in the Whirlpool Aero Car , an antique cable car suspended 200 feet over the Niagara River. You’ll travel 3,500 feet across the Niagara Gorge, taking in views of the river’s rapids and whirlpool, and actually crossing the Canada-U.S. border four times due to the way the river bends. (No passport required!)

Important note: If you don’t have a car to get around, your Adventure Pass Plus gives you access to three of the area’s public transportation systems – the WEGO bus system, Falls Incline Railway and the Niagara-on-the-Lake WEGO Shuttle.

The Butterfly Conservatory is an inspiring way to experience the natural world for the whole family.

The flora and fauna

Seeking a serene vibe? Head to the area’s Butterfly Conservatory , one of the largest glass-enclosed butterfly conservatories in North America. There are over 2,000 vibrant tropical butterflies here, alongside exotic blossoms, too.

There’s also the Floral Showhouse , a garden oasis where over 20,000 plants are grown annually. Year-round, there are displays of orchids, succulents, and other tropical plant species; and then there are eight special exhibits throughout the year, where certain in-season flowers are in abundance, like hydrangeas, geraniums or chrysanthemums.

Want to explore even more? Your Adventure Pass Plus gives you bonus access to four historical sites: Old Fort Erie, Laura Secord Homestead, McFarland House and Mackenzie Printery.

“I’ve talked to many people that walk in that are surprised they’ve enjoyed it as much as they have.”

If you’re visiting in Niagara’s peak season during the summer, Sauer says the attraction is special for another reason.

“Temperature wise, it’s cool on a hot summer day. It drops 15 degrees,” she says. “And it’s not as busy as some of the other areas of the Falls. So, if you are trying to get away from the hustle and bustle, it’s a nice calming place to go and visit.”

The Niagara Falls Power Station has quickly become a fan favorite of the best things to do in Niagara Falls. Take a glass elevator down 54 meters (180 feet) to explore the first major Canadian power plant on the Niagara River. You’ll walk the 670-meter (2,200-feet) long tunnel that leads to an observation deck at the Niagara River.

The tunnel is an amazing walkthrough of history and a feat of engineering, and it comes out on a fantastic observation deck with views of Canada’s Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls.

6. Journey Behind the Falls

things to do in niagara falls canada journey behind the falls

The Hornblower may be the Fall’s most famous attraction, but we love the Journey Behind the Falls even more! When visiting Niagara Falls, make sure to add this to your bucket list.

Located at the Table Rock Welcome Center, You descend 125 feet from above the falls to the heart of the cascade. You then get to explore 130-year-old tunnels that weave behind the waterfalls. Feel the power of the Niagara River and hear the thunder of the water crashing.

After you explore behind the scenes of the Canadian horseshoe falls, you come out to an observation deck right beside the falls, where you’ll get to see them firsthand from the outdoor viewing platform. It’s another attraction in Niagara Falls that’s sure to get your clothes very wet, but don’t worry, rain ponchos are provided.

The WeGo Bus stops here and there are restaurants, souvenir stores, and cafes, and you can also watch Niagara’s Fury at the Table Rock Center, which is included in your Adventure Pass. The Niagara adventure pass makes the perfect gift. Check out the options here.

7. Niagara SkyWheel

things to do in niagara falls skywheel

The Niagara SkyWheel can be seen throughout the city, and when visiting Niagara Falls, you really must go for a ride. This 175-foot-tall Ferris wheel offers fabulous views of the falls and the surrounding area. Each enclosed gondola can hold up to six passengers, and they are climate-controlled. There is a running commentary during the revolutions, and you have plenty of time to take photos and enjoy the scenery.

Clifton Hill fun Pass Niagara Skywheel view

Get there early in the morning to avoid the crowds. We went on a weekday and were first up, so we had the gondola all to ourselves. The Niagara SkyWheel is included in your Clifton Hill Fun Pass

8. Skylon Tower

things to do in niagara falls canada at night

Skylon Tower isn’t just a dining establishment; it is also an observation deck and one of the top Niagara Falls attractions. The Skyon Tower is Niagara’s answer to Toronto’s CN Tower, and it really does offer the best views of Niagara Falls, Canada, and the American Falls. There is an outdoor viewing platform that takes you 360 degrees for panoramic views. Book this best of Niagara Falls at Night Tour including entry to the Skylon Tower

A 52-second ride takes you to the top of the Skylon Tower for views of the Falls, the Niagara Gorge, and the surrounding area,, including Buffalo, New York, across the river. There is an observation deck and a 4D movie theater. Of course, while you are there, you can have dinner at the revolving restaurant.

9. Whirlpool Aerocar

exciting things to do in niagara falls canada cable car

Now, moving a little out of the city is the Whirlpool Aerocar. If you have visited Niagara Falls a few times, this is a great attraction to add to the list. What we don’t love about this is that lines can get long since it can only do one trip at a time.

niagara falls attractions dave and deb whirlpool aerocar

Located along the WeGo route, the Whirlpool Aerocar is a part of some Niagara Packages. It is quite a thrill taking you out to the middle of the Niagara Gorge to see the massive whirlpool in the middle of the Niagara River.

10. Illumination of the Falls & Fireworks

niagara falls attractions

Fireworks happen nightly in the summer months, and they are one of the best things to do in Niagara Falls for free! When dusk sets in, the falls are illuminated, and during the summer months, there is a fantastic fireworks display.

Be sure to get your place early; it fills up, and you need to scout your spot and stick to it. You can also choose one of the many restaurants that overlook the falls and eat a late dinner for a spectacular view.

niagara falls at night

Fireworks happen at different times throughout the year. The Winter Festival of Lights spans over 40 Nights during the Festival from November to Feb. and nightly in the summertime. The falls are illuminated each night, so even if fireworks aren’t going on, you will still have a light show every night of the year.

11. Dine with a View of The Falls

things to do in niagara falls where to eat

Since I mentioned watching fireworks from one of the restaurants overlooking the falls, I thought I should let you know what restaurants in Niagara Falls overlook the falls. Eating with a view is one of our favorite things to do in Niagara Falls. I never tire of that view. Some of the best restaurants with a view include The Keg Steakhouse, Massimo’s Italian, Skylon Tower Restaurant, Prime Steakhouse, Table Rock Restaurant, and Morton’s Grill. 12. Wonders of Magic Show

If casinos aren’t your thing, take in a Magic Show at Niagara Falls. The Vegas-style show is a wild magic illusion show featuring Greg Frewin at the Greg Frewin Theatre.

This is the longest-running show in Niagara, with 1 Million Guests enjoying the World Champion of Magic and Canada’s Top Illusionist performance. We saw this years ago and plan on going back to enjoy a buffet dinner followed by a magic show. It showcases illusions, classic magic, and a fun story for families and adults. Check out the Evolution of Magic for more details. Book tickets in advance here.

13. White Water Walk

The White Water Walk is an incredible opportunity to get up close to the Class 6 rapids of the Niagara River. 14. Niagara Glen

niagara falls road trip trail

Residents won’t be too thrilled with me sharing the Niagara Glen area of Niagara Falls. There are a host of trails covering an area of 42 acres with old-growth trees, massive boulders, and beautiful scenery. If you are looking for an outdoor adventure, you can go hiking anytime between sunrise and sunset. Admission to Niagara Glen Nature Reserve is free.

You may see people bouldering in the Glen. If you decide to give it a try, bouldering permits can be purchased at the Niagara Glen Nature Centre. Check out: Niagara Falls Road Trip – The Best of the Niagara Parkway

15. Nightmares Fear Factory

things to do in niagara falls canada nightmares

Want to get your blood pumping again? This is one scary haunted house. Located at the top of Clifton Hill across from Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Nightmares is a must for anyone who loves a good scare.

It is scary, alright; legend has it that it was built on the site of an old coffin factory. The proprietor was killed in a prank gone bad and has haunted the halls ever since. If you become too scared inside the maze of nightmares, you can chicken out. Don’t feel bad if you do, over 100,000 people have chickened out over the years. We went in thinking we’d be fine, but let me tell you, I held on to Dave for dear life!

16. Clifton Hill Fun Pass

things to do in niagara falls clifton hill pass

A visit to Niagara Falls would not be complete without visiting Clifton Hill, the Street of Fun on the Falls. Kids and adults alike will love Dracula’s Castle, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Wax Museums, Midways, and haunted houses. Read all about Clifton Hill here.

This area also has Casino Niagara and the Fallsview Indoor Water Park, making it a great destination for all ages. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes, and attractions along Clifton Hill, and it is worth walking up from the Oakes Garden Theater, which has great views of the falls.

A great option is to buy the Clifton Hill Fun Pass , which gives you access to six Niagara Falls attractions. It gives you access to many of the attractions in the Midway and on Clifton Hill, like the Niagara SkyWheel, Movieland Wax Museum, and the 6D Interactive adventure rides Cosmic Coaster and Zombie Attack! 17. Butterfly Conservatory

unique nigara falls attractions butterfly conservatory

Enter the climate-controlled rainforest and be surrounded by thousands of butterflies flying through the air as you walk along the path. As you enter, the humidity hits your face, making you feel as if you’ve entered a rainforest. Created to mimic the natural habitat of butterflies, this beautiful environment has waterfalls, pools, and lush vegetation.

There is also an educational element, as you learn about the life cycle of butterflies and can study their behavior. The Butterfly Conservator is included in Niagara Pass, and it really is a must-visit destination. The conservatory is wheelchair accessible and suitable for visitors of all ages.

18. Fallsview Casino Resort

things to do in niagara falls canada fallsview casino

Fallsview Casino Resort has become a huge draw to Niagara Falls. There are two casinos in Niagara: Casino Niagara near Clifton Hill and the more extravagant Fallsview Casino entertainment complex.

We’re not big on gambling, but the Fallsview Casino Resort is an excellent place to visit. Besides the casino, it has a world-class music venue that draws some of the top artists in the business. Billy Joel played Fallsview just last week! Fallsviews isn’t just a casino; it’s a resort complete with international music acts and 5-star dining. There’s shopping, five different restaurants, and two nightclubs.

19. Niagara’s Fury

niagara's fury things to do in niagara falls canada

While you are at Journey Behind the Falls, pop in to see the 4D movie that is included with your Adventure Pass. Niagara Fury is a lot of fun for the whole family, especially the kids. This immersive 360-degree cinema recreates the history of the falls complete with wind, mist, and vibrations make you feel as if you are right beside the mighty waterfall.

Ponchos are handed out beforehand and if you want to get wet, stand at the very front. It is located at the Table Rock Welcome Center, and you can grab a bite to eat here.

20. Botanical Gardens

things to do in niagara falls canada botanical gardens

Dave and I have visited Niagara Falls countless times and it wasn’t until two years ago that we finally stopped at the Botanical Gardens. It’s a quiet retreat and it is the perfect spot to capture some Instagram photographs.

It’s funny that we’d never walked through the gardens because the Butterfly Conservatory is located in the same spot. But in the past, we skipped the gardens and went straight to the butterflies. But it is worth walking through the Botanical Gardens as it is beautiful and is a quiet retreat from the chaos of the other attractions. The Butterfly Conservatory is included in the Niagara Adventure Pass.

21. Floral Clock

things to do in niagara falls canada floral clock

I never cared for the Floral Clock as a kid, but each time we return to Niagara, we always take a quick trip to the clock. It is a must-see attraction when you visit Niagara Falls simply because it’s been around for so long. The WEGO bus stops here, so you don’t even need to make a special trip.

It is powered by Ontario Hydro, which is fitting since these mighty waterfalls power much of the Eastern Seaboard. It is also the largest floral clock in the world.

22. Niagara on the Lake

things to do in niagara falls canada niagara on the lake

The only reason Niagara on the Lake is located so far down is because it is a bit off the beaten path and is its own destination in its own right. Located on Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Niagara River, this is one of the top tourist destinations in Ontario.

The Shaw Festival attracts theatre lovers, and if you love browsing shops and local artisans at work, this is the place for you. If you are feeling romantic, take a horse-drawn carriage ride around the historic sites of Niagara on the Lake. We have a full article dedicated to this town at 15 Amazing Things to do in Niagara on the Lake – Canada

23. Tour the Niagara Wine Route

what to do in niagara falls canada wine trail

After all that excitement from the more adventurous attractions, hop on the Niagara wine route in the glorious Niagara wine region. Only 15 minutes from downtown Niagara there are award-winning wineries spanning from the Niagara Escarpment and along Lake Ontario just waiting to be explored.

If you decide to stay in Niagara on the Lake, you can rent a bicycle and go on your own or join a bicycle tour. There are limo tours, funky bus tours, horse tours, and more to drink wine without having to drive. Popular Niagara Wineries include Peller Estates, Trius, Inniskillin, Two Sisters, Wayne Gretzky, and Vineland Estates.

24. Fort George National Historic Site

best things to do in niagara on the lake day trips fort george

The Fort George National Historic Site is located just outside of Niagara on the Lake. During the War of 1812, it was a strategic fort protecting the then-British Colony from the United States. Visit the fort to see re-enactments of The Red Coats firing their muskets and experience life two centuries ago.

It is a must-visit for history buffs to see this outpost, which was the site of the Battle of Fort George in 1813. There are several exhibits with actors dressed in historic clothing putting on musket demonstrations, military reenactments, and learning about what life was like during the War of 1812.

25. Water Parks

great wolf lodge things to do in niagara falls

Niagara Falls has two water parks. The Skylon Hotel & Waterpark is located at Clifton Hill, but if you really want to spend some time at a Water Park, Great Wolf Lodge in our choice. I’ll never forget spending a few days while working at YTV and having a blast in its 100,000-square-foot indoor water park, complete with wave pools, water slides, and a lazy river. Check prices here.

Staying at the hotel is a fun getaway for the family. While we wouldn’t do this anymore, I know that our neighbors love booking a stay at Great Wolf Lodge with the kids.

Where to Stay in Niagara Falls

where to stay in niagara Canada

We have a complete guide to the best places to stay in Niagara Falls here. But if you are looking for some suggestions right now, we recommend the Fallsview Casino area for the best views of the falls from your hotel room and dining. Read our complete guide: Where to Stay in Niagara Falls

Our favorite place is Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview Hotel and Spa . We just stayed there last week and had a magnificent room with a view of Horseshoe Falls, and enjoyed its Scandinavian style Spa experience. Marriott on the Falls across the street is great too with views of Horseshoe Falls.

If you want to stay close to Clifton Hill, we like the Sheraton on the Falls Hotel it has great views of the Niagara River American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls.

Getting Around Niagara Falls

things to do in niagara falls canada

When you visit Niagara Falls , traveling by car is ideal, but if you are visiting from out of the country or taking a side trip from Toronto , you don’t need a car. If you buy an attraction pass, it gives you access to the WEGO Bus that visits the major attractions.

Bicycle rentals are available and are an excellent way to see the area. Dave and I once rode bikes all the way to Niagara on the Lake from downtown Niagara to tour some wineries. You can also book tours out to Niagara from Toronto.

There are plenty of parking lots around Niagara Falls, and hotels have parking, including valet.

Getting to Niagara Falls

things to do in niagara falls getting there

Buses operate from downtown Toronto and Buffalo, New York . We normally drive to Niagara Falls since we live an hour away, but we have taken the bus from Toronto by booking through Busbud, and it was quick and easy. The only downfall is that it is about a 30-minute walk from the bus terminal to the attractions.

Trains travel from New York City to Toronto and Cleveland. Once you get to Niagara Falls, it is easy to get around, as most attractions are within walking distance. Alternatively, you can hop on the WeGo People mover to get to the attractions outside the city center.

You can drive to Niagara Falls from the United States by crossing the Rainbow Bridge. Pedestrians can also walk across Rainbow Bridge to visit either side of the border. Read: How to Get From Toronto to Niagara Falls – Bus, Train, Transit, And Car

Tours can easily be booked to Niagara on the Lake and on the Wine Trail, where they will pick you up from your hotel.

I recommend Allways Antique Photo in Niagara Falls Canada, right across the street from the upside down house! So much fun, worth every penny. We have an amazing photograph of our family to cherish forever! Everyone that comes over mentions and loves our photos. A MUST DO IN NIAGARA FOR COUPLE AND FAMILIES!!!!

That is a great recommendation, thanks!

I have never seen Niagara falls. Now i am willing to see. Its such a beautiful place.

Niagara Falls are very impressive. Most people want to discover this landscape and take many photos. I wish I can visit this place in the future.

I always love to visit Niagara fall , this was one of my dream trip. Thanks for sharing all useful information about the it.This blog would really help me to enjoy my trip thanks for sharing such beautiful destination.

my husband, who is slightly handicapped, and i are thinking of coming to niagara falls for a vacation. will he have trouble getting around at these sights, especially niagara falls itself? he can walk with a cane, but not very far. we have the option of a wheelchair, but don’t know about that either. thanks.

Hi, I was wondering how it would be visiting all these wondering places traveling on a motorcycle? We would love to ride from NY to the Canadian side of the Falls. Thank you!

I love your site! Very informative and helping me and my family plan for our trip. I have a question for you if you don’t mind. It seems that the famous maid of the mist boat tour starts on the NY side. Is this correct? Your help is appreciated. Thanks, Steph

Hi Steph, Thanks for the compliments and we are so happy to hear that our posts have helped you plan your trips. In regards to your question, yes, Maid of the Mist only operates from the US side. It has been this way since 2014. However, Hornblower Niagara Cruises operates on the Canadian side. They both follow the same route but board at different areas. The Hornblower boats are actually more modern and offer more seating. You can check out there schedule and pricing here: https://www.niagaracruises.com/ Hope you have a great time. Cheers,

I always wished to visit Niagra Falls and guess what recently after reading your blog I visited Niagra Falls. All your useful tips have helped me a lot in my trip. Thank you so much!

Well done! This post carries its title like a charm! This is more than a mouth full and all that one truly need to know in just one post! The pictures are STUNNING! I have never been to Niagara Falls, but I hope to go one day. I knew that the falls crossed the borders, but I didn’t realize that there was a difference in the views/experience! Truly informative guide that I plan to save for when I am able to go on the trip. Thank you ?

Nothing beats those views at sunset from a jacuzzi tub in a suite! We always remind folks that Niagara Falls needs to be experience in each season, especially Fall.

What about RV parks? Is there a park that provides a better view than another? My husband has mobility issues and it would be great to be as close as possible.

Beautiful… Niagara Falls is amazing my brother and his friends once had a trip to Niagara and he said that it’s amazing experience he had…

Oh your post makes me want to go back to the states! We missed out from visiting the Niagra Falls 🙁 will have to get there when the children are older

There is a stereotype that Niagara Falls should be viewed from Canada. This is not true! Of course, it’s great when you have a visa in the US and Canada, and you can get the most complete impression from the waterfalls. But if there is no Canadian visa, this does not mean that there is no point in going to Niagara! From the Canadian side, it is really better to see all the waterfalls, because two of them are on the side of the US, and the third is partly in the US and partly in Canada. Accordingly, from Canada (that is, when you are in front of waterfalls), you can see them better than when you stand near them. But! On the American side, a huge number of observation platforms that allow you to see the waterfall well enough, there is an opportunity to go down to the foot of the waterfall – Cave of the winds for only $ 10 and, of course, the opportunity to make an incredibly exciting and unusual trip on the boat Maid of the Mist and look at all three waterfalls from the water!

I’ve seen Niagara falls thrice and it is still a truly marvelous experience for me. I highly recommend the place if you’re first time to travel to Canada!

I will try this one good article

WOW, WONDERFUL… NIAGARA FALLS IS ALWAYS BEAUTIFUL, A SYMBOLIC REP FOR ALL THE FALLS IN THE ENTIRE WORLD… FOR VISITORS IT’S EASY TO WATCH THE FALLS AS ACCORDING TO THEIR WISH… THEY CAN ENJOY THE GORGEOUS VIEW USING ANY 3 OF THIS ACCESS EITHER BY ELEVATOR, HELICOPTERS, OR WE CAN EVEN GAZE FROM OBSERVATION TOWER… THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS WONDERFUL ARTICLE…

We are going to Niagara Falls for a weekend in January, Off season, I know. Going with a nine and ten year old, any suggestions? I am real sad the Greg Frewin magic show isn’t happening.

Other than what is on this list?:-) For the winter season, hit the wax museums, Ripleys and all that fun stuff, but head out to the Niagara on the Lake region too. Maybe there is some maple syrup farms or snowshoeing or even some sleigh rides. The countryside in that area is post card perfect.

You know that adventure pass seems far more desirable than the one with the simulator ride, and the haunted house. Perhaps I’ll have to make my way back to the Falls.

It likes a sign from above for me. I have read several Toronto and Niagara Fall posts that I feel like I need to plan something soon. 🙂 I have thought about visiting but now it floats to the top of my list. Thanks for a great info.

Y finalmente llega a Niágara.

Minister Gudie Hutchings harvests insights on tour of Niagara College

IMG_1170-scaled.jpeg

On May 29, The Honourable Minister Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, took a tour of Niagara College’s Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Led by President Sean Kennedy and the NC Leadership Team, Minister Hutchings met with students, visited the Teaching Greenhouse and toured culinary, baking, and research Labs to explore NC’s programs.

tour a niagara

Minister Hutchings learned about NC’s Horticultural & Environmental Sciences Innovation Centre (HESIC) and the new HESIC Greenhouse .

Nearing the end of construction, the HESIC Greenhouse will expand NC’s capacity to support the greenhouse industry, one of the fastest growing economic sectors in Canada, and cultivate more hands-on learning opportunities for students.

In the Marotta Family Innovation Complex, Minister Hutchings learned about a beverage pilot plant and enjoyed a tasting of Sobrii, an innovative product that NC’s Research & Innovation team helped to develop.

As part of their federal, provincial and territorial Ministers meeting in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Lisa Thompson, Provincial Minister Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, hosted Minister Hutchings and a delegation of Ministers from Nova Scotia, PEI, Saskatchewan, and officials and staff from across the country for lunch. The group gathered at Benchmark Restaurant where they sampled locally-sourced dishes prepared by NC students.

“The Ministers spoke about the importance of working together for our communities and local economies and how wonderful of a facility NC students have and are fortunate to learn in,” said Mabel Watt, NC’s Director of Government Relations. “Minister Hutchings also spoke about the impressive nature of the students she met on the tour and how she learned a lot about our programs.”

The College was pleased to host the cross-Canada delegation and showcase how NC students are bringing farm to table and contributing to the future of agriculture in Canada through a wide range of trailblazing programs.
