Experience a fully guided tour into the 8th wonder of the world, Upper Antelope Canyon. This tour will show the natural illuminating sunlight on the canyon walls, while it is changing colors throughout the seasons. Tour 1 allows sightseers to experience the canyon for around 80 minutes in their selected time slot. With the new updated guidelines, Upper Antelope Canyon is a single direction tour. Visitors will now exit with a 15-minute hike, up and over the beautiful canyon. There are 21 steps going up and 112 steps going down.

  • Chevron down What to Bring

Closed end shoes are recommended and are required for our 3 private canyons. We discourage skirts and dresses due to the ladders and the terrain. We ask our guests to dress modest because we do accommodate families. Canyons can be up to 10 degrees cooler than the external temperature, so layers are recommended for your comfort. The temperature is usually five to ten degrees cooler, all year around in the canyons. Dress in layers to accommodate changing temperatures.

If it is windy, we do recommend a hat and handkerchief to cover your nose, mouth, and ears. Sand enters the canyon in all directions, so photographers please bring a cover for your camera, a plastic shower cap works best.

  • Chevron down Tour Policies

1. Cancellation Policy:

If you cancel a tour 72 hours (or more) before the scheduled start of your originally booked tour, then you will get a 94% refund. Between 24 and 72 hours, you will get a 50% refund. Cancellations within 24 hours, no refund will be made. Be patient. From the date we issue the refund, it will take 3-5 business days to post to your account.

2. We operate on Mountain Standard Time

Our company, Adventurous Antelope Canyon Tours, DO NOT operate on Daylight Savings Time however the Navajo Nation does acknowledge the time zone. We may be located on the Navajo Nation but we as a business DO NOT operate on DST. We operate on MOUNTAIN STANDARD TIME all year round. That is the same time as Phoenix, AZ and Page, AZ. If you find yourself confused, the best thing to do is Google ‘Page, AZ time’ and follow the time listed. You can also turn off the set automatic time zone and set it to ‘Phoenix, AZ’ while you are visiting Page and the surrounding area. Google Maps and the time on your phone will adjust based on your current location so please keep that mind. Once again, we DO NOT operate on Daylight Savings Time.

3. No Bag Policy

This means no bags of any kind; ie: no back packs, no purses, no fanny packs, no baby carriers, and no water bags. On our multiple canyons tours – we do allow a small bag but it remains in the vehicle while in the canyon. (AACT is not responsible for any kind of theft, stolen property, or any damage)

4. Accessibility

A portion of the tour is “off road” and can be washboarded and quite bumpy. No Pregnant women are allowed. No wheelchairs. People with back problems, or people who have recently had surgery are advised to not take this tour. You will be walking about one half mile in sandy and rocky terrain. Customers going on this tour accept ALL liability for their own health issues.

5. Is your canyon wheelchair accessible and do you allow service animals?

Due to our location, we are unable to accommodate guests with wheelchairs and apologize for this inconvenience. Animals of any kind, (including service animals) are NOT allowed on the parking lot premises or canyon.

It is considered a solemn event deserving of respect.

Upper Antelope and the History of Antelope Canyon

Upper Antelope Canyon, which is also known as “The Crack,” is the most popular of the two slot canyons that make up Antelope Canyon. It is also the most-visited slot canyon in the American Southwest and the most-photographed in the world. The radiant sun beams that shine through its walls in the spring and summer are one of its main claims to fame, while its changing colors in the fall and winter are another mesmerizing sight to be seen. The Upper Canyon’s ease of access and lack of climbing also make it extremely popular with the family set as well as visitors who may require easy travel but still want an exciting experience in nature.

Antelope Canyon was formed over many hundreds of years by water that ran through sandstone, giving it its unique geography. Upper Antelope is called Tsé bighánílíní in Navajo, which can be translated to “The place where water runs through rocks” in English. Antelope Canyon got its name from the belief that Antelopes once grazed along the canyon in the winter.

TOUR THE VERMILION CLIFFS NATIONAL MONUMENT

The Vermilion Cliffs National Monument is 294,000-acre monument that offers beautiful sandstone, hiking, and wildlife viewing, plus a landscape of cliffs and canyons. We offer three different full-day tours of the area.

Tours depart from our office location: 22 South Lake Powell Blvd – Page AZ 86040

TOUR OF WHITE POCKET The real gem of the Vermilion Cliffs and surrounding area. Simply put, our trip to White pocket will show you the most scenic place and most unusual geology in this region. This is an 8-hour trip and you will leave having visited one of the most amazing places in all of the southwest of the US. The area of White Pocket on the Paria Plateau in Northern Arizona is very impressive indeed! While many are lured and wait their turn to visit the infamous “Wave” in the North Coyote Buttes, the “White Pocket” area to the east is seldom visited. Maybe because of its remoteness or the requirement of 4WD to access the area. The impressive White Pocket will fill the senses beyond imagination! The drive to the swirling, twisted, multicolored natural artwork is an adventure in its own right, and the exploration by foot is endless. “White Pocket” will surely become “top of the top” in the list of special places. This area has colors, shapes, and textures that are hard to beat. A trip to the White pocket is a memory of a lifetime.

Time spent will be for exploration and photography. Moderate hiking is involved, water and a sandwich is provided but we do encourage you to pack your own bag with water and items you may need while we are on tour.

Tour Duration: 8 Hours 5hrs of Total drive time (round-trip) and 3 hours on-site. We provide the transportation in our SUV(s), sit back and relax and take in the scenery.

Maximum group size 10 persons. This Tour does not include Antelope Canyon, nor does it include “The Wave.”

TOUR OF BUCKSKIN GULCH

For the avid hiker. This hike does involve steep climbing up and down sandstone – which is also known as slick rock. Please know this is a rather demanding hike, with strong legs and strong ankles required. We explore the longest slot canyon known. Granted we may not have enough time to explore all 16 miles, but with 3 hours on-site, there is much to be discovered. Lunch & water please pack your own, we have emergency rations just in case.

Buckskin is very seasonal. We mainly offer tours from May 1st to June 30th, then again from Sept 1st to Oct 31st. You’re more than welcome to submit a request outside of those days, but all tours are weather dependent, as the Buckskin is prone to flooding year-round. This tour does not include Antelope Canyon.

We have two access points, two tail heads we can start the tour from.

Middle Entry is more of a challenge: The hike begins at the elevation of 5,100 ft and we hike down to 4,000 ft, the final 200 feet involves climbing down sandstone – most can do this without the aid of ropes but we will have a rope there just in case. The hike from where we park to the actual slot canyon is 1.3 miles (one-way), so be prepared for this, especially during the hotter seasons.

Wirepass Trailhead is a bit easier: The hike is flat-level for the most part, we do have to climb over a boulder or two, and this path has a higher chance of walking through water that can be as deep as 4 feet.

Both entry points run the risk of walking through water (not so much with Middle Entry).

Tour Duration:  7-8 Hours

Hiking Distance: up to 8 miles. This Tour does not include Antelope Canyon, nor does it include “The Wave.”

North / South Coyote Buttes

If you’re able to win a permit 4 months in advance we can arrange a tour for you, prices start at 250$ before tax and tours run about 7-8 hours from start to finish. We cannot win the permit for you, there is no trick to winning, it’s all based on luck

_____________ All tours to Vermilion Require 2 or more persons. due to the terrain, we don’t recommend this tour for younger children. But if you believe your child can handle the hike, they are more than welcome, they must pay the child rate (even babies).

_____________

We are an authorized Outfitter permitted by the BLM.

5 Star Reviews ★★★★★

I did promise that I would write a review when I got home. Flew the little Cessna with Chris on a solo run. Was an Amazing flight. 2 hrs. He took me everywhere, and I saw beautiful views from the Horseshoe bend, all the way to Monument valley and back. No regrets. Thank you very much. All very Professional.

Absolutely fantastic experience. Very professional, customer centric company exemplifying excellent customer service at every turn. We could not recommend American Aviation highly enough, truly outstanding.

We wanted to see Rainbow Bridge, but a flight was our only option with our time constraints. I was pleased that we also saw the dam and Horseshoe Bend from the air. It would have been better if the pilot had been able to communicate with us with the headsets. He tried to tell us what we were seeing, but it was almost impossible to hear him.

3 of us went on a 40-minute flight over Horse shoe bend and Lake Powell. You haven't seen Lake Powell until you have seen it up close in a tour plane. It was exciting. Simply fantastic. Our pilot, Bob has been around for many years and is a seasoned experienced pilot as are they all we discovered . They were very friendly and eased my wife's every concern. The experience far outweighs the cost. This will be a life-time memory. I recommend it to any one over the age of 14.

The tour was a personalized event, where our tour guide took time to explain the Navajo culture and beliefs and how they used the local plants and herbs. Very educational and interesting. The three slot canyons were beautiful with very interesting structures. The hike was with moderate difficulty. I am not very athletic and struggled a little towards the end. But my guide was patient and never let me feel rushed or uncomfortable.

We (4 adults) did the full Wind Pebble Canyon hike with Jean as our guide. Everything was better than we expected! Jean taught us so much about desert plants and their uses as well as about Navajo history, life and culture. The canyons were amazing and we really enjoyed the fact that there were no crowds to contend with and the hike was so peaceful and unhurried. We would definitely recommend this tour company.

We chose the Rams Head tour and loved it! We had 5 kids ranging from 6 to 12 who have all had lots of hiking experience before. The hike was fun and involved cable assists and ladders. The main difference is that this is on their family land and we were the only ones in the entire canyon. No crowds at all. It was so much fun, amazing sights, and great guides (Mel and Jean). Highly recommend to anyone wanting to avoid the crowds and have a good hike too.

Such a great morning exploring a couple of canyons on the land with Natasha. She was so friendly and a wealth of information. I had so much fun chatting with her and learning about the land, the city, and the Navajo culture. Definitely a highlight of my trip. I was happy to have done the early morning hike. It was the perfect temperature too.

A guided tour is more of a passive experience where the guide will have all information and experience needed for you to enjoy the attraction. 15 Best Things to Do In Page, Arizona (+ Itinerary!)

Explore the top things to do in Page, Arizona! Dive into scenic beauty, outdoor adventures, & hidden gems that make this Page, Arizona itinerary a must.

Turquoise waters of the Colorado River flow in a sweeping arc at the base of towering rust-colored cliffs. The view from above showcases Horseshoe Bend in Arizona, where the river makes a dramatic 180-degree turn, surrounded by layers of eroded rock formations. The sunlight casts a warm glow on the landscape, highlighting the textures and curves of the rock formations.

Page, Arizona is home to some of the most spectacular scenery and incredible outdoor adventures in the US Southwest. It’s a popular destination for iconic sites like Lake Powell, Horseshoe Bend, and Antelope Canyon.

Located in the stunningly beautiful Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, visitors can enjoy hiking, river rafting, boating, kayaking, off-roading, and more in this outdoor adventurers’ paradise.

Visiting Page from our home in Salt Lake City is only a half-day drive, so we’ve been able to visit many times over the years – you could spend so much time here, though, and never run out of things to do!

In this post, we’ve rounded up the best things to do in Page, Arizona, and put together a 4-day Page, Arizona itinerary that includes our favorite activities, tours, and day trips to help you plan your own adventure.

Best Things to Do in Page, Arizona

1. explore antelope canyon.

>> Driving d istance from Page, AZ: 20 minutes, 7.8 miles

Sunlight streams through a narrow opening in the smooth, curved walls of Antelope Canyon, casting shadows that dance across the sandstone floor below. The walls are striped with layers of red, orange, and beige, creating a mesmerizing, abstract pattern. The ceiling of the canyon is high above, forming a narrow tunnel that stretches into the distance, beckoning adventurers to explore its depths.

Antelope Canyon is a world-renowned slot canyon known for its stunning, otherworldly beauty.

Located on Navajo land, this natural wonder is made up of several sections: Upper Antelope Canyon, Lower Antelope Canyon, and Antelope Canyon X.

Tour guides are mandatory to access all areas.

The narrow passageways, carved by water over millions of years, display unique and swirling sandstone formations that create mesmerizing patterns of light and shadow as the sun filters through the narrow openings above.

If you want to avoid crowds and you’re not particular about which canyon to see, check out Antelope Canyon X – it’s more budget-friendly and less busy than Upper and Lower Antelope Canyons.

You can also kayak Antelope Canyon. Keep in mind the part of Antelope Canyon you can kayak doesn’t look like Upper, Lower or X, though, so don’t do this activity expecting to see the narrow slot canyons and wavy sandstone formations.

Also note that this is a popular location for kayaking so expect company!

2. visit horseshoe bend.

>> Driving d istance from Page, AZ: 7 minutes, 4.7 miles

Sun casting glow on rocks above Horseshoe Bend in Arizona

Horseshoe Bend is one of the most iconic sights in Arizona. Named for its distinctive horseshoe-shaped meander, it’s a bend in the Colorado River that is now a famous and very popular natural landmark.

But don’t let its popularity keep you away! It’s still an amazing sight and is located just 5 miles south of Page.

There is a short hike to get out to the viewpoint. You’ll want to bring plenty of water as temperatures often exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer months. There is no shade along the trail so sun hats , sunscreen, hiking shoes , and sun protection are recommended.

There are also a variety of Horseshoe Bend tours that provide other options for you to see this unique curve in the Colorado River by helicopter, horseback, or Jeep. You can even book a kayak tour on the water through Horseshoe Bend which is on our bucket list.

Tips for visiting Horseshoe Bend

  • The parking area is open from sunrise to sunset, 365 days a year.
  • As of August 2023, there is a one-time entrance fee of $10/vehicle to park and hike to the overlook.
  • Parking is prohibited along Highway 89. If the parking areas are full, come back and try another time.
  • We recommend getting there right at sunrise to avoid the crowds and for the best light to take pictures. Near sunset, you’ll be looking straight into the sun as it sets making it hard to see or take photos.
  • The hike to Horseshoe Bend from the parking lot is 1.5 miles roundtrip with 137 ft of elevation gain. There is no shade and summer temps can exceed 100 degrees so plan accordingly.

3. Rent a Kayak/SUP or Take a Boat Tour of Lake Powell

>> Driving d istance from Page, AZ: Varies depending on the destination

View of Lake Powell under a blue sky

Lake Powell was created in 1963 when the Glen Canyon Dam was completed to hold back the waters of the Colorado River.

It’s now a vast blue lake surrounded by sandstone walls where you can enjoy all sorts of water sports like waterskiing and wakeboarding.

With its crystal-clear blue waters, towering red rock cliffs, and hidden canyons, Lake Powell offers a unique and picturesque landscape that’s best explored by boat.

There are several boat tour options available from Waheap Maria, including guided tours, kayak rentals, and houseboat rentals.

The Glen Canyon National Recreation Area includes Lake Powell so the National Parks annual pass is accepted here.

5. Kayak Labyrinth Canyon

>> Driving d istance from Page, AZ: 15 minutes, 9.3 miles to Antelope Point Marina

Two kayaks are beached on a rock ledge shore overlooking the calm, blue-green waters of Lake Powell. The sun is shining brightly, illuminating the surrounding red rock cliffs and casting a reflection on the glassy surface of the lake. In the distance, sandstone bluffs rise up from the water, creating a serene and picturesque landscape. The kayaks are brightly colored, with paddles resting on the sand next to them, inviting the viewer to imagine an adventure on the tranquil waters of the lake.

If you want to explore slot canyons from the water, an overnight kayaking trip on Lake Powell is a wonderful way to do so.

Labyrinth Canyon lies on a quiet side of Lake Powell and as you kayak in this secluded area you’ll be surrounded by colorful sandstone cliffs.

How far you can go is determined by the water levels in Lake Powell, and you can generally hike into the canyon once you reach the end by kayak.

Guided day tours of Labyrinth Canyon and other beautiful slot canyons only accessible by boat are available as well.

The sandstone formation has been shaped over millions of years by the forces of wind and water, creating a breathtaking natural wonder. The colors of the rock range from warm reds and oranges to cool grays and blues, adding to the natural beauty of the scene.

Rainbow Bridge National Monument, located on the Navajo Reservation near Lake Powell, is home to one of the world’s largest natural bridges.

This impressive sandstone arch spans 275 feet and rises 290 feet above the canyon floor.

The arch is only accessible by boat (or overnight backpacking trip) followed by a 2-mile roundtrip hike.

Plan your trip to Rainbow Bridge National Monument

  • Book a boat tour to Rainbow Bridge through Lake Powell Resorts & Marina

You can choose from half-day, full-day, or multi-day trips, depending on your level of adventure and experience.

Plan your rafting trip on the Colorado River

  • Book a white water rafting or boat tour through Wilderness River Adventures
  • Protect your gear by packing it in a dry bag

8. Visit the Carl Hayden Visitor Center

>> Driving d istance from Page, AZ: 5 minutes, 2.3 miles

A scenic photo taken from the Carl Hayden Visitor Center, featuring the vast expanse of Lake Powell's shimmering blue waters, surrounded by towering red sandstone cliffs. In the foreground, the impressive Glen Canyon Dam stretches across the canyon, holding back the mighty Colorado River. The sky above is a brilliant blue, dotted with wispy clouds, casting a soft light over the breathtaking landscape.

The Carl Hayden Visitor Center is the main visitor center for all of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and a great place to learn more about the area.

The circular building with panoramic windows sits right on the edge of Glen Canyon Dam, providing impressive views all around.

You’ll also find interesting exhibits, a store, and helpful rangers that can provide up-to-date information for your trip.

Tours of the dam itself are sometimes available but were closed when we visited.

9. Hike the Hanging Garden Trail

>> Driving distance from Page, AZ: 4 minutes, 2.2 miles

It’s a short, easy hike through a classic desert landscape with beautiful views and a garden of ferns at the end.

This hike is only 1.4 miles roundtrip, so it can easily be done in an hour, and is right outside of town near the Carl Hayden Visitor Center and Glen Canyon Dam.

Book a Horseshoe Bend Helicopter Tour

12. explore vermilion cliffs national monument.

>> Driving distance from Page, AZ: 1 hour 10 minutes, 67 miles

The Wave in Arizona, a unique bright orange rock formation in Vermilion Cliffs National Monument

If you’re up for an adventure, spend some time exploring nearby Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, a remote, unspoiled 280,000-acre area known for psychedelic sandstone landscapes and dramatic slot canyons.

Some of the attractions here require 4×4 to access due to rough dirt roads, but guided tours are available as well.

The most iconic hike in the area leads to the the Wave and South Coyote Buttes.

Permits for the Wave are hard to get, but if you’re in the geofence area, you can try for the Daily Lottery through the Recreation.gov app. If you can’t get a permit, there are other locations we feel are just as unique and spectacular!

For example, we recommend visiting White Pocket which is also part of the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument.

This area has equally fascinating rock formations and is less busy than The Wave.

Group of white and red rock formations in the desert. The rocks are tall and craggy, and they are surrounded by a canyon. The sky is blue and cloudless.

We booked the overnight White Pocket Photography Tour with Dreamland Safari. Staying overnight meant we were right there for sunset and sunrise – the best times of day for taking photos.

And it’s a bonus for photographers who enjoy night photography as well. Booking a tour meant everything was taken care of for us so we could focus on exploring White Pocket so we found it very worthwhile.

The nearby town of Kanab has outfitters that offer many tour options. It’s a terrific way to visit the area if you don’t have the right vehicle to access destinations that require a high clearance 4WD vehicle like White Pocket or The Great Chamber.

Plus you learn a lot from the tour guides who have a love for the wild places of the Utah/Arizona borderlands and enjoy sharing tips and information.

If you have more time in this area, a final recommendation is to plan a backpacking trip to Paria Canyon .

13. Explore Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument

>> Driving distance from Page, AZ: 2 hours, 55 miles

Female hiker on red sandstone Nautilus Trail in Vermillion Cliffs National Monument

Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument encompasses nearly 1.87 million acres of public lands in southern Utah.

It’s filled with incredible landscapes and is an open frontier for exploration whether you want to hike, go for a scenic drive, explore slot canyons, or see natural arches.

From nearby Page, AZ, you can easily access nearby hiking trails right off of highway 89 including Wahweap Hoodoos and The Toadstools, two of our favorite easy hikes that will take you through unique landscapes that showcase sandstone spires.

There are some nice hiking trails near White House Campground as well, including the Nautilus, a hike to a unique spiral sandstone formation that’s definitely worthwhile.

Plan your visit to Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

  • See our guide to the best hikes in Grand Staircase-Escalante

14. Visit Kanab, Utah

>> Driving distance from Page, AZ: 1 hour 15 minutes, 74 miles

Kanab Utah welcome sign

Kanab, Utah is a small town situated in the heart of the breathtaking Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Along the 1 hour drive from Page, you’ll find fun things to see, do, and photograph like the Toadstool Hoodoos, Old Paria, and Johnson Canyon.

You can spend a day exploring Kanab hikes and slot canyons, sledding down the Coral Pink Sand Dunes, or ATVing on the many red sand trails!

Also, be sure to save some time to walk around downtown. Kanab is a beautiful and unique outdoor town with great restaurants (stop at Kanab Creek Bakery for breakfast and you won’t be disappointed!).

15. Visit the Grand Canyon

>> Driving distance from Page, AZ: 2.5 hours, 135 miles

If the Grand Canyon is on your bucket list, you can drive 2.5 hours one way from Page to spend a day at either the North Rim or South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Visiting the South Rim

From Page, you’ll access Desert View Drive to enter Grand Canyon National Park at the East Entrance and drive 23 miles to reach the main Grand Canyon Visitor Center area.

There are six developed canyon viewpoints and five unmarked pullouts – we recommend stopping at them all! Desert View Drive is open to private vehicles year-round.

During the busy season, parking could be a problem at the South Rim Visitor Center area, which has access to restaurants, gift shops, and overlooks.

We recommend you pack food for your excursion and be prepared to eat at any of the picnic areas along Desert View Drive in case you can’t find a parking spot at the South Rim.

We also found there aren’t many places to get food along the drive from Page to the South Rim so it’s best to stock up in Page with everything you’ll need for the day.

Read next: Hiking the Bright Angel Trail in Grand Canyon National Park

Landscape views out over Grand Canyon from the South Rim

Visiting the North Rim

Due to its elevation at over 8,000 feet and snowy conditions in the winter, the North Rim is closed from December 1 through mid-May.

The North Rim isn’t as busy as the South Rim – only 10% of Grand Canyon visitors visit the North Rim. The temperatures are also much cooler.

Spend half a day exploring the scenic drives, pullouts, and short walks at Point Imperial and Cape Royal. The roads to both points are narrow and windy so no RVs over 22 feet are allowed.

We also recommend walking to Bright Angel Point for a classic view of the canyon. From the North Rim Grand Canyon Lodge, follow the paved 0.5 mile round-trip trail to the overlook.

Note there are stairs, steep sections, and places with drop-offs to complete the full hike. If you can’t do the hike, be sure to check out the view from the Lodge patio!

Best Time To Visit Page, Arizona

Page is really a year-round destination. We’ve been able to visit every season and through every type of weather.

For the most moderate weather and temperatures, the best time of year to visit Page is spring and fall.

During the spring months of March to May and the fall months of September to November, temperatures range from highs between 60 and 80 and lows between 40 and 55 degrees F.

Winter can be a terrific time to visit when there are fewer people, but from December to February the average highs are around 45-50 and lows around 30-35 degrees F.

It doesn’t snow often in Page in the winter. But when it does, it’s usually a small amount, and the white snow against the red rock landscape is so pretty!

We really like visiting Page in the winter to avoid the crowds. We also don’t mind the cold or snow as long as we have winter gear & layers.

Summer in Page will be HOT – highs can exceed 100 degrees F! It’s best to limit outdoor activities to the cooler mornings and evenings and avoid the hottest part of the day.

It’s also important to stay hydrated and use sun protection like wide-brimmed hats, UV protection clothing, and sunscreen.

The hotel has rooms with a view of the lake as well as campsites for those who want to enjoy the starry night skies. Lodging here is very popular so be sure to get reservations in advance.

There are plenty of other accommodation options in Page like resorts, boutique and chain hotels, vacation rentals, glamping, RV Parks, and campgrounds. We have stayed in a variety of hotels in Page, but we prefer vacation rentals so we have a kitchen.

For those who prefer camping, check out Lone Rock Beach to stay right on the sandy beach of Lake Powell!

Standing on top of Horeshoe Bend we saw people Kayaking the Colorado. There are several companies that will backhaul you from Lee’s Ferry up the Colorado to either Glen Canyon Dam for a 14 mile ( likely overnight trip) or to just above Horseshoe Bend for a 8 mile kayak back to Lee’s Ferry. The 8 mile trip took us about 4 hours without side hikes. No rapids but a little choppy in places. Great to see the canyon from the top and Bottom. The backhaul cost about $85 per person ( we have our own kayaks). More if you rent a kayak. Loved this experience so much we have done it twice.

Hey Steve – sounds like an amazing day! I’ll have to do that next time I’m in the area.

Navajo woman-owned Antelope Canyon tours celebrates 10 years of business

PAGE, AZ (AZFamily) — Millions of people from all over visit the swirling red rocks of Antelope Canyon every year.

Several different tour companies are available. One of them, a Navajo woman-owned business, just celebrated 10 years of business.

Leilah Young’s mother, Dixie, received hiking permits from the Navajo Nation for Antelope Canyon in 2014.

With only the help of family, she opened Dixie’s Lower Antelope Canyon Tours .

“She had no idea how to operate a business, but she went in there and believed in herself,” Young said. “Literally, she put up one of those tents, canopies with a plastic table and a couple of chairs. That first day she only had 12 visitors.”

Now, they give tours to over 300,000 people from across the world every year and can take 1,500 people on a tour daily.

“It’s amazing to hear that they plan their vacations around specifically seeing lower Antelope Canyon and it’s impressive what we’ve built,” Young said.

More than 4 million people visit the area annually.

Young is now CEO and said all the tourism has helped the city of Page and surrounding communities grow.

“I think in the last 10 years there’s been like 20 hotels that have popped up and these hotels are going up because of this slot canyon,” she said.

The Antelope Canyon tours also provide much-needed job opportunities for people on the Navajo Nation.

“We have an employee that actually drives two hours every day just to get to work,” Young said. “I’m just like ‘oh my goodness’ and that’s how scarce jobs are out on the Navajo Nation. We here want to share a part of our culture. We want to share a part of the Navajo Nation and how beautiful the Navajo Nation can be.”

The 10 years were celebrated with a ribbon cutting and art unveiling.

Young said that for the next decade, they want to continue to give back to their community, create more business opportunities and grow as a family company.

“I’m very proud of how far we’ve come. I’m very proud of how far we’ve come as a family. I’m proud of the things that we’ve been able to accomplish,” Young said.

Summer is the busy season, and tours are full daily, so their suggestion is to try to book your trip a month in advance. You can find out more about booking  here.

A 48-hour Solo Trip to Page, Arizona Was Exactly the Getaway This Mom Needed

The remote town in Northern Arizona is full of adventure and wonder.

Diana Espina with EMPATHYFilms

At first, I didn't want to go. I didn't want to travel to a new and exciting place without my husband or kids. Not because I was nervous to travel alone, but because I wanted to experience it all with my family.

My husband was supportive though, encouraging me to take an opportunity presented to me to visit the town of Page in Northern Arizona. I had wanted to go to this area just a few months earlier during a family trip to Scottsdale, Tucson, and Flagstaff, but we couldn't make it happen. So, now was my chance.

I put a lot of mom guilt aside. My husband enlisted his mom to help with the schlepping of our two daughters to dance, soccer, and lacrosse —never mind the daily grind of wake-up, lunch-making, homework-helping, bedtime, and everything else we do.

Even as I got in my Lyft to head to the airport early on a Wednesday morning, I felt sad. I felt guilty. I felt like I was leaving my family behind to head out on an adventure that they weren't going to get to have. It was only going to be about 48 hours total on the ground in Arizona. But as it turned out, it was exactly what I needed.

All About Page, Arizona

Page, Arizona is a town of about 7,500 people in the northern part of the state. It's about 10 miles south of the Utah border and is surrounded by the Navajo Nation.

The town uses the tagline "The Center of Adventure" in its tourism materials and that couldn't be more true. On the surface, the town is set in the middle of the desert. But there is so much more to it.

Page is home to one of the most photographed places in the United States, Antelope Canyon. There are also several other slot canyons surrounding it. You may have also heard of Horseshoe Bend or Lake Powell . Those are just some of the sites you can visit in the area.

The region definitely has it all: hiking, off-roading, horseback riding, boating, and fishing. In 48 hours, I didn't even scratch the surface of this beautiful part of the United States.

Sari Hitchins

Day 1 was long but so worth it

Traveling from the East Coast to Arizona for two nights and one full day seemed kind of crazy, and I knew it would be such a long day. After leaving New Jersey on a 7 a.m. flight, I made it to Phoenix safe and sound where I met a small group of journalists I would be traveling with, eager for our day ahead.

We were scheduled on a short flight from Phoenix to Page which was delayed due to a mix-up. There is only one commercial airline that flies into Page Municipal Airport with limited flights per day. Despite the confusion, I'd recommend the 45-minute flight instead of the four-and-a-half-hour drive. It allows for more time for adventure!

Everything is close in Page. The airport was a mere three-minute drive to our home for the two nights, the Hyatt Place Page/Lake Powell . Because of our delay out of Phoenix, it was a quick check-in and bag drop-off in our rooms before heading out on our first adventure: a tour of Secret Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend with Jeri from Horseshoe Bend Slot Canyon Tours.

The slot canyons are all on the Navajo Nation. The land has so much history and is sacred to the Navajo. Therefore, it can only be accessed as part of a tour with a Navajo guide. Secret Antelope Canyon is located on Jeri's family's land.

As part of Horseshoe Bend Slot Canyon Tours , our access to the canyon was basically private. When one tour comes out, another goes in, allowing for time to explore and take the endless amount of photos you'll want to take.

Jeri took us to Secret Canyon in an open-air, safari-type vehicle for a fun off-road experience. Once at the canyon, Jeri not only showed us every nook and cranny, explaining the geology and showing us the rock formations, but she also helped us all become iPhone experts. She knew exactly where to take every photo to get the optimal shot and she also helped us all learn about settings on our phones we didn't know we had.

Every twist and turn inside the canyon painted a different picture. The light changed. The feeling of awe grew, and I knew we were in a very special place. I couldn't wait for the rest of our adventures.

After leaving Secret Canyon, Jeri took us not to the public viewing area for Horseshoe Bend, but to a much more private area on Navajo land. The City of Page runs the public parking area with a 1.5-mile walkable path to the viewing area. You can park for a small fee in one of the hundreds of spots.

But where we were, the viewing was unimpeded by others taking photos and we took in all that this majestic view had to offer. We asked questions and learned about the water levels and the formations. And yes, Jeri also showed us the best (panoramic) angles to take our photos with.

Back in the open-air truck, we returned to the tour operator's storefront in Page. If we thought that adventure was amazing, we knew we had so much more in store for us for the rest of the trip.

In the evening, we enjoyed an amazing dinner back at Hyatt Place Page/Lake Powell's signature restaurant Prickly Pear Kitchen . This place should be at a five-star resort. The hotel's general manager, Nadia Sanatacruz plans out the seasonal menus herself inspired by her family's Sonoran background, and even does some of the cooking herself. We enjoyed prickly pear margaritas, appetizers of chips with salsa and guacamole, along with chicken quesadillas, chile rellenos, and carne asada. For dessert, Sonoran flan and Coyotas de Sonora (an empanada-like cookie).

My extremely long day ended with Navajo Storytelling by Eli Secody. Secody told us stories of his life in the Navajo Nation. He also played music for us. But I'll be honest. I had been awake and traveling for about 20 hours at that point, and it was time for bed.

Our stay at Hyatt Place Page/Lake Powell

Many of the hotels in the area are chains. But this Hyatt Place is in a class of its own. Santacruz has gone above and beyond to create a welcoming environment. The hotel evokes a warm, inviting feeling with its decor, and sunsets from the outdoor patio off the restaurant cannot be matched.

The Hyatt Place Page/Lake Powell offers something no other Hyatt Place does, and that is an adventure concierge. They will help you plan any excursion you want to take while you're visiting the hotel, including sight-seeing airplane and helicopter rides.

Seasonally, the hotel also offers packages that include the stay and activities like slot canyon tours. But my favorite perks of staying at the Hyatt Place were the complimentary cultural events like Secody's Navajo Storytelling and Dreamcatcher Workshops.

Visiting the Slot Canyons

My second day in Page was the day I was truly waiting for, and our only true full day in the area. After starting with a great breakfast from the hotel buffet, it was off on another adventure to visit the famous slot canyons.

These natural wonders are narrow in spots, and they wind through sandstone walls formed by winds and flash floods. They are known for their rich colors and are some of the most photographed spots in the country.

Jarrin Curley from Adventurous Antelope Canyon Tours picked us up at Hyatt Place and whisked us away to our next adventure experiencing the Dine (Navajo) playground. Curley took us in a four-wheel-drive vehicle through a sandy, dry riverbed to our first stop: Upper Antelope Canyon.

Upper Antelope Canyon

As one of the more popular tourist destinations, Upper Antelope had plenty of groups headed into the canyon. Despite the number of people, the one-way traffic and our tour guide's expertise still allowed for a feeling of privacy.

Like Jeri the day before, Curley was knowledgeable about every formation, nook, and turn in Upper Antelope. Using his laser pointer, Curley showed us the candlestick and the lion's head. He showed us how to create a low echo in an alcove and, of course, showed us how to take the most amazing photos. We also learned some fun facts, like Britney Spears' music video for her 2002 song "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" was filmed in Antelope Canyon and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

Upper Antelope is known as an A-shape canyon and, in some places, it can get very dark as the walls of the canyon come closer toward the top.

I mentioned the one-way traffic. When you come out on the other side of Upper Antelope, there's a short hike back up along a ridge which gives you an amazing view from above of what you were just inside. Heads up, there is a staircase that takes you back down to where the vehicles were parked.

Curley then took us to three other spectacular slot canyons: Rattlesnake, Owl, and Coyote. Each one is so different yet magnificent in its own right. He also took us back to Upper Antelope about an hour later to witness the magnificent light beams that shine into the canyon starting around 11 a.m. It's definitely something not to be missed.

Rattlesnake Canyon

Rattlesnake Canyon was amazing and possibly my favorite of them all. We were the only people inside the canyon during our tour. It is narrow in spots with so many twists and turns, and small arches. Sometimes you had to walk one foot in front of the other to squeeze through. There are also level changes in the canyon with small ladders to climb in some spots. This really made it feel like we were on an adventure!

At the end, there's a much larger ladder to climb to get out. When you get to the top, similar to Upper Antelope, you then walk along the top of the canyon. It was truly hard to believe that the small crack in the Earth we were seeing from above was the actual slot canyon we had walked through below.

This was the most unique of the slot canyons in this writer's humble opinion.

Coyote and Owl Canyons

Coyote Canyon was a bonus canyon that Curley took us in to show us an example of a V-shaped canyon. All of these slot canyons were along the same dry riverbed "road."

What made our visit to Owl Canyon the most special was we actually saw a Great Horned Owl perched on a ledge of the canyon. We also got to see small lizards throughout. (We also got to see a couple of Black Widow spiders on our adventures but I'll leave it at that.)

A Cultural Experience

After a busy morning, we got to have lunch back at Prickly Pear Kitchen where we sampled the most delicious mocktails made with Cleanco non-alcoholic tequila and gin. We ate fish tacos, which were amazing (and I don't even normally eat fish).

After some R&R sitting on the beautiful patio overlooking the desert, it was time to get ready for an amenity at the Hyatt Place that I was really looking forward to—a dreamcatcher workshop. According to the website PowWows.com , dreamcatchers are traced back to the Ojibwe people. The women started weaving these "magical webs" to protect their babies. They became more popular among Native Americans in the 1960s and 1970s.

Pearl Seaton taught us all about how the dreamcatchers help bring in the good dreams and keep out the bad. We then learned how to weave our own dreamcatchers and channel whatever we were feeling in the moment into making it. Seaton taught us the meanings of the beads we wove into the dreamcatchers. The white shells represent females. The turquoise stones represent males. The brown juniper beads keep the bad spirits away, and the black stones benefit sleep.

I chose to use three white shells to represent myself and my two daughters and two turquoise stones to represent my husband and our dog. There were plenty of juniper beads and black stones to help with sleep as much as possible. I had so much fun doing this craft and made two dreamcatchers, once for each of my daughters. It was the perfect handmade souvenir to bring home to them.

Then it was off to dinner at Red Heritage , a Native American Dinner Theater run by the Navajo. This was a fascinating stop on our trip. Our Navajo frybread tacos were delicious. But beyond the food, it was so interesting to learn about Navajo customs and history. We learned how they made the yarn to weave beautiful rugs and were treated to Native American music and performances, including a flute, drumming, and dancing.

Lake Powell—The Ultimate Playground

Our last adventure also sadly marked the end of our trip, but it was also the most relaxing and serene way to wrap it all up. We were heading out for a boat ride on Lake Powell.

Lake Powell is a man-made reservoir located on the Colorado River. It crosses the border between Arizona and Utah. The lake is 186 miles long and has nearly 2,000 miles of shoreline. According to the City of Page's website , that's longer than all of the West Coast of the U.S.

You can imagine it is the place to be in the hot Arizona summer. Between its natural beauty and endless recreation, it's the perfect location to go fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, or boating. There are sunset dinner cruises and multi-million dollar houseboats.

For our excursion, we were on a patio "tri-toon" boat from Antelope Point Marina . In the summer, these types of boats are popular for groups to rent because they have a full kitchen, a bathroom, a grill, and also a waterslide. They will pull them up to a beach and then camp there.

Our captain, Ken Reynolds, is the General Manager at Antelope Point Marina. He took us through a very different part of Antelope Canyon from what we had seen on foot a day earlier. The walls of the canyon went up about 100 feet from the water. The sunshine and the blue sky made for beautiful reflections from the cliffs as the ducks danced in front of the boat.

We also got a brief look at the mouth of Navajo Canyon, where the walls soar up over 400 feet. I think we all enjoyed the fresh air and breeze on our faces as we took in yet another spot of wonder.

48 Hours Left This Mom Wanting More

Before I knew it, we were off the boat and back on our small Contour Airlines flight back to Phoenix before I got on another plane bound for New Jersey.

That flight gave us one last adventure though. We flew over a part of the Grand Canyon. While I've seen it from the ground, there was something about seeing it from the air that was truly awe-inspiring.

This trip left me wanting more because 48 hours just wasn't enough time. It left me wanting to experience more of not only Page, Arizona but all of the many other magnificent places the United States has to offer.

I missed my family, but I also enjoyed meeting new people, seeing new places, and doing things on my own. I went to bed when I wanted to. I didn't have other responsibilities or kids to drive around. It was the break I needed (albeit too short!). But yet I was still Mom. The second night, my 14-year-old texted asking for help with her homework just minutes after my 11-year-old asked if she could FaceTime to say goodnight.

They were certainly jealous of the places I got to see and the things I got to do. We're already talking about going back, but also including many of the other natural wonders within a short drive of Page: Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park. I can't wait until my next adventure: with...or without my family.
