ELO — originally named the Electric Light Orchestra — was formed in 1972 by singers/multi-instrumentalists Lynne and Roy Wood and drummer Bev Bevan from the ashes of legendary rockers the Move, with the intention of fusing rock music with classical instruments. Wood left after one album and Lynne assumed leadership of the group — taking on lead singer, songwriter, producer and guitarist roles — which went on to score such massive hits through the ‘70s as “Evil Woman,” “Strange Magic,” “Living Thing,” “Can’t Get It Out of My Head,” “Mr. Blue Sky,” “Telephone Line,” “Don’t Bring Me Down” and more.

Lynne revived the ELO brand in 2001, with himself and longtime keyboardist Richard Tandy as the only remaining early members, for the album “Zoom” (featuring Harrison and Starr) and tour. He did so again in 2014 and has toured extensively and released two albums with the group, 2015’s “Alone in the Universe” and 2019’s “From Out of Nowhere.”

Is Jeff Lynne's ELO going to tour the UK again?

UK farewell dates are yet to be announced, but since the band haven't embarked on a UK tour since 2018 and their 2020 dates had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, it's fair to say we should watch this space.

Jeff Lynne’s ELO have announced that their final tour will take them across North America later this year.

Dubbed “The Over and Out Tour”, the trek will see the veteran band play 27 dates starting in Palm Desert, California on 24 August before arriving back on the West Coast in Inglewood for the last date on 26 October.

Jeff Lynne , 76, was born in Birmingham, England in 1947 and formed the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) in 1970.

The group, who were heavily influenced by The Beatles, are best known for Lynne-penned hits including “Mr Blue Sky”, “Evil Woman” and “Don’t Bring Me Down”.

Lynne is also known for his lush production work and his time as a member of supergroup the Traveling Wilburys, alongside George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty.

Jeff Lynne’s ELO played the “Legends Slot” at Glastonbury Festival in 2016. In a three-star review for The Independent , critic Jack Shepherd wrote that the show featured “a large orchestral backing and numerous supremely professional musicians”,

Jeff Lynne of the Electric Light Orchestra

“Kicking things off with a trio of relatively upbeat numbers - ‘Evil Woman’, ‘Showdown’ and ‘All Over The World’ - it quickly became apparent that the rain, which is gradually growing heavier, has dampened some campers’ spirits, many scrambling for their anoraks, not quite taken by the relatively mute frontman,” he continued.

“Thankfully, ‘Livin’ Thing’ quickly followed by ‘Rockaria!’, offers the first singalongs, engaging more casual fans with their Beatles-esque rock ‘n’ roll. ‘Telephone Line’ then rolls out more applause, while the upbeat double whammy of ‘Turn to Stone’ and ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’ offer up more chances to dance, the second of which elicits the band’s biggest clap along.”

Jeff Lynne’s Electric Light Orchestra Announce Over and Out Farewell Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Jeff Lynne ‘s Electric Light Orchestra are going to call it quits after one final run they’re dubbing The Over and Out Tour. The 27-date tour kicks off Aug, 24 in Palm Desert, California, and wraps up Oct, 25 in Los Angeles, California, though it’s possible they’ll add additional legs before it ends. Ticket sales begin March 22.

The original incarnation of Electric Light Orchestra ran from 1970 to 1986, landing timeless hits on the charts like “Mr. Blue Sky,” “Evil Woman,” “Strange Magic,” “Don’t Bring Me Down,” and “Turn to Stone.” When frontman Jeff Lynne dissolved the group to produce other artists, including George Harrison and Tom Petty, ELO drummer Bev Bevan carried on with new musicians under the moniker ELO Part II, creating bitterness between the two camps that lasts to this day.

“I had all these negative thoughts before agreeing to play Hyde Park,” Lynne told Rolling Ston e in 2016, “but the crowd just went bananas all the way through. They loved every minute of it. It was the best show I’d ever been involved with up until that point.”

During the band’s last U.S. run , Lynne offered a 20-song setlist that included Electric Light Orchestra gems “Evil Woman,” “Don’t Bring Me Down,” “Telephone Line” and “Do Ya,” all reproduced with stunning clarity. Even the underappreciated and much-maligned “Xanadu” from the 1980 Olivia Newton-John movie received its due.

In addition to his prowess as a producer, Lynne was also a co-founder and member of The Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. The collective also received a nod in the live production with a comforting rendition of “Handle with Care.”

Lynne was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2023 and ELO ushered into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.

The caption reads, “The Over and Out Tour, the final tour, is coming to the U.S., and it’s going to be out of this world! Join Jeff Lynne’s ELO for a historic night live in concert. Tickets are on sale Friday, arch 22 at 10 am local.”

Comments are mixed, full of fans posting where they want them to visit, and quite a few are upset about the UK tour being canceled in 2020.

One IG user wrote, “US…Really? Europe is Waiting for the Tour that was canceled in 2020 and all we got is this?”

Somone else posted, “No UK dates (sad emojis).”

Another wrote, “Don’t forget South America specially Chile.”

Though it’s not posted, there’s a good chance these fans will get their wish, and they’ll tour worldwide after the U.S. markets.

Originally called the Electric Light Orchestra, it was formed in 1972 by Lynne, Roy Wood, and Bev Bevan. Their goal was to mix rock with classical music. Some of their hits include Evil Woman, Strange Magic, Living Thing, Can’t Get It Out of My Head, Don’t Bring Me Down, Mr. Blue Sky, and more.

The band broke up in 1986. At this time, Lynne had a solo career and worked with stars like Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Bryan Adams, and others. He was also a member of The Traveling Wilburys, the supergroup that consisted of Petty, Harrison, Orbinson, and Bob Dylan.

ELO made a comeback in 2001 and has two new albums since then. Alone in the Universe was released in 2015, and From Out of Nowhere came out in 2019.

Now is your chance to check out Jeff Lynne’s ELO for what is probably the last time.

Jeff Lynne’s ELO makes bold final tour decision

Jeff Lynne's ELO announce final tour

The Over and Out Tour is their last

Jeff Lynne’s ELO have announced a final tour called The Over and Out Tour.

The extensive North American trek takes in 27 dates, opening at Palm Springs Acrisure Arena on Saturday 24th August and wrapping up at Los Angeles Kia Forum on Friday 25th October.

A statement reads: "The Over and Out Tour, the final tour, is coming to the U.S. and it’s going to be out of this world! Join Jeff Lynne’s ELO for a historic night live in concert.”

Tickets go on sale at 10am local time on Friday 22nd March.

The Over and Out Tour is Jeff Lynne’s ELO’s first North American trek in exactly five years.

Jeff Lynne’s ELO last toured the UK back in autumn 2018 when they played 15 sold-out arenas. Their planned seven-date From Out of Nowhere UK Tour in October 2020 was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic.

It’s currently unclear whether there will be any UK and European dates on The Over and Out Tour. We’ll keep our fingers crossed!

76-year-old Jeff Lynne has sold more than 50 million records worldwide with ELO and scored 20 Top 40 hits in the UK and US.

Alongside his fabled career with ELO, Lynne was a co-founder and member of The Travelling Wilburys together with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty, as well as a producer and collaborator with some of the biggest names in music including The Beatles, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh and Bryan Adams.

Revisiting Jeff Lynne’s 2023 Concert, His First in 4 Years

will elo tour again

Jeff Lynne performing at the 2023 VetsAid concert in San Diego, Nov. 12, 2023

Jeff Lynne’s ELO returned to the concert stage for the first time in more than four years on November 12, 2023 with a 10-song, hit-filled performance. The appearance, part of Joe Walsh’s annual VetsAid benefit concert held this year in San Diego, Calif., was almost four years to the day since his band played a studio show for BBC Radio in London in November 2019 and their first since Lynne completed a North American tour that August 1. The shorter set, part of a multi-act lineup organized by Walsh, included such ELO favorites as “Don’t Bring Me Down,” “All Over the World” and “Mr. Blue Sky.”

Lynne, born on December 30, 1947, had been enjoying a late-career renaissance. A huge comeback event, billed for the first time as Jeff Lynne’s ELO before 50,000 in London’s Hyde Park in September 2014, gave him the confidence that the public interest was not only there, it was insatiable. In 2015, he recorded a studio album, Alone In the Universe , and signed a worldwide deal with Columbia Records. That led to club appearances in New York and Los Angeles. A year later, he played a pair of shows at Radio City Music Hall as well as at the Hollywood Bowl. Soon, he was back to headlining arenas in Europe and North America, and triumphantly played London’s Wembley Stadium in 2017. That same year, decades of being eligible, the Electric Light Orchestra was finally inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Lynne, a production nut, released another studio album in 2019, and it was expected that he would continue touring as Jeff Lynne’s ELO. The pandemic, however, changed all of that.

The spaceship finally landed on a chilly Sunday evening at an outdoor venue, the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre, as Lynne and company kicked off their set with “Evil Woman” and “Do Ya.”

Watch them perform “All Over the World”

Before performing “Turn to Stone,” Lynne said, “I’d just like to say, to all veterans, thank you for your service. It’s a wonderful thing that you do.” He also thanked Walsh “for inviting us all here tonight.”

It was a rare public appearance for Lynne since the pandemic. In June 2023, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame by none other than Walsh. On March 18, 2024, Lynne announced a final tour, called “Over and Out.” Tickets will be available starting March 22 here .

That’s a great lineup of songs, from an amazing, and humble English rocker. Hope they plan a tour for 24 sometime soon!

Jeff let his hair down and actually seemed to be having fun, as he and his band performed a fun, raw, and rare set of live music that was over 50 years in the making. This live, understated performance came from his heart and it absolutely showed.

Being at the 2018 tour opener in Oakland was an unforgettable experience. It had been 35 years since they last toured and 37 since they had opened a show in Oakland.

I enjoy this very much. Still after 4 years his voice is lovely and the music make me feel so good and positive. Wonderful indeed

I was lined up to see ELO in high school-but somehow didn’t get tickets. About 40 years later I saw him at Hollywood Bowl-with a full orchestra!! it was totally Epic. Saw him again in L.A. and took my grown kids-they loved it…and last night played “Cant get it out of my Head” and it is so true. Go if you get a chance-best concerts of my life

My son and I flew out to San Diego from Pennsylvania to see the VetsAid concert and were very happy we did. Jeff did not disappoint. It was my first ELO concert and hopefully not my last. Jeff is a class act.

Elon Musk confirms his threat: give me 25% of Tesla or you don’t get AI and robotics

Avatar for Fred Lambert

Elon Musk appears to confirmed and even clarify what can be seen as a threat to Tesla shareholders: give me 25% of the company or I won’t build AI and robotic products at the company, after making clear that the company is worthless without those.

In recent years, Musk has repeatedly stated that Tesla is an AI and robotics company. He has even said that Tesla is worth virtually nothing without self-driving, its main AI product.

More recently, the CEO has not only said that but has also been making moves to ensure that this is the only path for Tesla, like canceling the cheaper Tesla vehicle on the unboxed platform in favor of its upcoming Robotaxi.

That’s why it was really concerning when the CEO suggested that he is “uncomfortable” building AI products at Tesla unless he has “25% control over the company” – something he doesn’t have right now – partly because he decided to sell tens of billions of dollars worth of Tesla shares to buy Twitter.

Musk currently owns about 13% of Tesla’s shares. If his 2018 compensation package goes through, he will be closer to 18% – assuming that he sells some shares to pay for taxes. It means that he would need another compensation package worth tens of billions or a new share class at Tesla to give him more control.

In a new post on X, the CEO now appears to confirm his previous threat and even makes the quiproquo clearer by approving this message:

If Elon gets 25% voting power, Tesla is reincorporated in Texas, and compensation package is approved, then AI & Robotics stays within Tesla and the company can march on forward to become the largest company in the world.

By approving of this post, the CEO appears to say that these conditions are needed for him not to divert AI and robotics products away from Tesla:

  • get 25% voting power over Tesla
  • Reincorporate Tesla in Texas
  • reapprove his 2018 compensation package

Electrek’s Take

This is bizarre. The CEO of a major public company is publicly threatening to move products he himself claims are critical to Tesla’s success if he doesn’t a greater percentage of the company.

This should be immediate grounds for termination. Given the captive BoD it won't happen, but JFC already.

I can say “move” here because Elon agreed with this idiotic comment that mentions “AI and robotics staying within Tesla”. This is a clearer threat than what he previously made, which was about being “uncomfortable building AI products” at Tesla.

Wild. I don’t even know how he could legally do that, but as CEO, he could do a lot of damage if he wanted to.

The guy would already have about 25% of the company with his 2018 compensation package and if he didn’t sell stocks to buy Twitter. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Speaking of the 2018 compensation package, the reason it was rescinded was because a judge found that Elon had too much undue influence on the board. The board is now proving the judge’s point, as they are not doing anything about the CEO making this threat. It’s ridiculous.
