Best things to do and see in Warsaw

Warsaw is considered the most important city in Poland . It is the capital of the country since 1596 (previously it was Krakow) and has a cultural and historical background very difficult to match. In 1939, before the Nazi holocaust, there were 1,300,000 settled Jews in the city, almost 30% of the population of the capital ... After 6 years of indescribable horrors, that same population was reduced to one third and more than 90 % of the city was reduced to rubble. Since then, the reconstruction of the city has been rehabilitating the most emblematic and essential areas, combining the before and after to make history clear. In Warsaw there are a large number of guided tours through the different neighborhoods and areas of the town. In fact, there are tours that focus on making routes through the most emblematic places that allow you to travel the city in 2-3 hours. You can also find more specific routes to visit the Palace of Culture and Science, Plac Zamkowy (in Stare Miasto), the Royal Castle, the little mermaid in Rynek Starego Miasta, the Barbakan, the Nowe Miasto, the Jewish ghetto, the Łazienki Park , the Wilanów Palace, the Saint John Cathedral or the Prague district. The advantage of the local guides is that they can tell you things not so well known in the city as well as recommend more exclusive places. It can help you to know better how are the free walking tours in Warsaw the opinions and ratings of travelers who have already done a tour in this city. In addition, other interesting cities to visit from Poland are Poznan and Wroclaw.

Tour Highlights

I went to Old Town tour with Martyna and highly recommend to everyone. Deep knowledge of the history and entertaining at the same time. Very good introduction to the Polish culture too. Fluent English and nice personality. Jewish Warsaw with Anna – excellent presentation. Orange Umbrella is the best Free Tour of Warsaw. I tried there competitor first and didn’t like it and quit after about 10 min.

evraso Fair Lawn, USA

My partner and I took a walking tour of Warsaw old town with orange umbrella. Our guide Peter (perhaps spelled Piotr) was fantastic, spoke excellent English and made the tour informative and interesting. He was happy to recommend local restaurants, museums etc and really brought this beautiful part of the city to life. I couldn’t recommend the tour and guide highly enough.

Fustyoaks, Great Britain

As I travelled alone through Warsaw, I thought of having a guide might be a good idea. So I came up to the orange “Umbrella Free Tour”, where I met Anna our guide at the King Sigismund’s Column. She is originally from Warsaw and knows great spots. The tour lastet about 2 hours during which she shared her overwhelmingly huge knowledge about the city and its history with us. It was very interesting to listen to her and she always had funny anecdotes to a lot of places we went. She was really helpful, answering everybodys questions and giving really good recommendations on other places to visit while one stays in Warsaw. Thanks to her I was eating in a realistic “Milkbar” in Praga afterwards. I can just recommend everyone to do this tour, especially with Anna as a guide!

Our Old Town tour with Gavel was very, very good. He knows the material, expresses it well, understands and answers all questions. He keeps track of his visitors. I highly recommend this tour. He carries the umbrella so you can see him in crowds.

samkoyangi Narragansett, USA

We were on Joanne’s 10am tour of the Old Town this morning in the light rain. She was very knowledgeable and the tour moved at a good speed. She was mindful of all in the group and was an excellent communicator. History came alive especially her discussion of politics in the late 18th century. Thank you Joanne.

This free walking tour of Warsaw is the ideal way to begin to discover the capital of Poland . During this tour, you'll see the Royal Castle, the Presidential Palace, the famous Market Square and much more!

Castle Square in Warsaw

At the scheduled time, we'll meet at the Copernicus Monument at the selected time and start a free tour around the historical centre of Warsaw. First, we'll visit the residence of the former kings of Poland.

Then we'll stroll through the market square looking at the colourful houses of Warsaw's Old Town . This part of the city had to be rebuilt after the Second World War due to the destruction caused by the Nazis.

During the tour, we'll discover the history of Warsaw and the main personalities who influenced its development, such as King Sigismund III. This monarch moved the national capital from Krakow in the 16th century.

The guide will take you to admire the imposing Warsaw Barbican and the medieval city walls . The visit to the historical centre will allow us to meet some of the most famous Polish personalities while strolling through the streets where Marie Curie or Frédéric Chopin were born.

Finally, after a 2.5-hour tour, we'll end our free tour at the Warsaw Rising Monument or near the  Warsaw Barbican .

It isn't possible to take the free tour if you're a group of more than 6 people, even if the bookings were made separately. In this case, we recommend booking a private tour.

This tour was excellent and the tour guide was the best we had for any of the trips we did during our visit to Krakow. The guide was full of interesting information and spoke excellent English. He spoke clearly and guided the group around at the right speed so that we could take photographs and have a good look at everything. The tour was very reasonably priced and the guide was clearly passionate about the subject. I didn't catch the guides name but he said English speakers usually call him Jack. I would highly recommend this tour.

Last weekend we had three tours with Walkative and would recommend it to anyone travelling to Krakow! All guides were really funny and friendly, and had all sort of interesting information to share. First we did the Street Art Tour with Navia und after we were so enthusiastic about this tour we decided to go for the Old Town Tour with Damian and the Macarbre Tour with Jaczek. Can only recommend the tours and guides, and if we come back to Krakow, we will definitely do a tour again.

I did 2 tours in one day they were so great! First the old town with Mario and then the Jewish quarter with Ania. I have done free walking tours all over Europe and these tours were the best-above and beyond fantastic. Both guides were native Polish, well educated, extremely knowledgeable, and passionate about the tour subject matters. They do these tours full time and are very excited to share their history and culture. I really can’t recommend this company enough! They offer a wide variety of tours. I wish I could do them all!

Having spent much time learning the more 'heavy' sides of Krakow's long history, it was a delight to enjoy a afternoon in this museum. The museum is full of interactive installations and displays (...), the artifacts held in the collection are often stunning and illuminating, and our guide skillfully used these small every-day items to feed into broader questions of social and historical significance, how [Krakow's] people have lived, how its influence has risen and waned and now these questions feed into the 'heavier' questions of religion, politics and economics. Can thoroughly recommend this tour.

I had a fantastic time and learnt more things that I can remember and write down by taking 4 walking tours by Walkative Agnes, Magdalena and Bartos. They are all excellent tour guides, very knowledgeable, they carry materials with them that help bring to life all the stories that are telling combined with excellent presentation skills. Absolutely recommended!

Oddly enough, the main town was the last in the various walking tours I have done with Walkative over two trips to Gdansk. There is very little overlap and this one really gives you a solid grounding in the history dating back four or five centuries in some cases. The guide (Macin I think - sorry!) did a wonderful job retelling some of the gore and much of the wonder that’s as old Gdansk. These guides do an amazing job!

Dawie’s tour was the best theatre in Paris as well as informative!!!! He is great – even in the rain. Do it.

My group really enjoyed the amount of history explained in the tour, it was a nice way to get a lot of information on several of the key sites in the center of Paris in a compact amount of time. Excellent for orientation and background. I would certainly do other tours in the future.

Just finished a 3 hour tour with Dara around Berlin, which absolutely flew by! Dara was incredibly knowledgable and made the tour both interesting and entertaining. If you have a short amount of time in Berlin like us I would highly recommend it. Cheers Dara!
