Sick of dark days and cold temperatures? We have some warm, sunny escape inspiration for you. The shoulder season month of April brings with it the advantage of fewer crowds and mild temperatures in many tourist destinations both in the US and abroad. With this comes lower accommodation and transport costs, and easier opportunities for sightseeing and touring.

These are the best warm weather destinations to visit in April.

Home to capuchin monkeys, lizards, sloths, and more, Manuel Antonio National Park is open to visitors everyday except Tuesdays. Back in the city, Barton Springs Pool is a must-do activity in April. It’s a natural pool located close to downtown with views of the skyline, and the water temperature is a constant 68 degrees year-round. Pro Tip: To avoid long lines, go to the South (rather than North) Entrance of the pool.

Whether you're interested in lying on the beach, enjoying the great outdoors at a national park or exploring a cosmopolitan city, there's a getaway for you on this ranking. warm places to visit april

Since Kaua'i is the wettest place in Hawaii, dry weather in April isn't a given, but this time of year marks the end of the rainiest season on the island. If you're willing to put up with a few potential showers, a trip in the low season will allow you to embrace the Garden Island's lush natural beauty without the crowds (and at a lower price point). If you're seeking sunshine, visit Poipu Beach or Waimea Town on the southern part of the island. And you can't leave Kaua'i without taking in the northern Napali Coast via boat or on a helicopter tour .

April in Arches National Park marks the sweet spot of comfortable weather (think: highs in the low 70s) and relatively smaller crowds before the summer season kicks off. Visitors can stay cool while trekking through this Utah park to see the Instagram-worthy Delicate Arch or the Windows Viewpoint. Though Arches won't be as busy as the peak months of May or June, be sure to plan ahead. Guests visiting during prime hours between April 1 and Oct. 31 must have a timed entry ticket, which can be purchased up to three months in advance.

You might come to Sedona, Arizona, to hike the otherworldly red rock formations, but the town's wellness culture and art scene will round out your spring vacation. April temperatures average in the 70s, ideal for active hikers looking to climb Cathedral Rock and other popular attractions. Those looking to disconnect can visit one of the area's many renowned wellness retreats or yoga studios. Meanwhile, the free Spring Open Studios event, held every April, invites art lovers to meet more than 50 local artists in their studios.

This ancient sandstone city in southwest Jordan consists of temples and tombs that date back to 312 B.C. Petra's elaborate carved facades like the Treasury and the Monastery, combined with natural wonders like the Siq gorge, captivate tourists with their beauty and historical interest. Since April's average temperatures in the 70s make it an opportune time to visit this desert locale, be prepared for crowds and head to popular sites early in the day. Better yet, plan to tour the sites at night, when the city is less chaotic and lit by candlelight.

Dreamy Bora Bora draws travelers year-round with its white sand beaches, warm waters and romantic atmosphere. This tiny French Polynesian island invites visitors to slow down and relax at its luxurious overwater bungalows or get out and explore its beauty. Boat tours and four-wheel-drive excursions are fun ways to see much of Bora Bora's scenery, including the breathtaking Mount Otemanu. Vacationers should also go snorkeling in the turquoise lagoon. Come in April to enjoy the warm weather before the island becomes packed with tourists.

One of the most stunning natural wonders in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Machu Picchu comprises about 80,000 acres of temples, aqueducts and gardens that were once a sacred Incan city. April is on the tail end of Peru's wet season, so it's possible to encounter light rain. However, the area sees fewer tourists during this month than in summer, so the trails will be less crowded and there'll be fewer people interrupting your perfect photo op. But remember, timed entry tickets to this archaeological marvel are required; you can purchase these up to one year in advance.

With the city's gilded temples, bustling markets, dizzying nightlife options and a world-renowned street food scene, a vacation in Bangkok is guaranteed to be the best kind of whirlwind. Thailand's one-of-a-kind capital offers a range of accommodations and activities, from luxury hotels to hostels and leisurely river cruises to frenetic tuk-tuk rides. For extra festivities, plan your visit during Songkran, a water festival held every April 13 to 15 to celebrate the Thai new year. Squeezing in an April trip before the monsoon season begins in May will save you some dough, but pack light clothing – you'll encounter temperatures in the 90s.

One of the most enchanting times of the year in the nation's capital, early April allows Washington, D.C., visitors to enjoy the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which commemorates the cherry blossom trees gifted to the city by the mayor of Tokyo in 1912. The event runs from mid-March through mid-April (peak bloom typically occurs within that time frame) and includes celebrations such as a parade, a kite festival and the Pink Tie Party. What's more, this is the perfect time of year to check out the city's top memorials, relax at the rooftop bars or take a walking tour before the notorious summer humidity rolls in.

The world's largest waterfall is a bucket list destination for many travelers. Considering this natural wonder on the Zambia-Zimbabwe border is about twice as high as Niagara Falls, it's easy to see why. But to experience the full splendor of Victoria Falls, timing is crucial. Since April is just after the region's rainy season, visitors will be able to see the falls at their most powerful. For the best views this time of year, opt for the footpaths on the Zambian side in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park or take an aerial tour to get clear views above the strong mist.

Known for its canals, 17th century architecture and "coffee shops," Amsterdam is absolutely beautiful in April. This month is when the Dutch city's surrounding tulip fields are in full bloom and when the popular Tulp Festival takes place. Though the weather can still be unpredictable, April is typically a great time to picnic and watch passersby in Vondelpark or walk or bike around the city thanks to Amsterdam's rising temperatures and longer days. You can explore neighborhoods like the upscale Jordaan district (home to the historical Anne Frank House) and Leidseplein (known for its lively nightlife).

In April, this Mediterranean archipelago is just starting to open up for the summer season. This means you can sneak in a visit before tourists flock to Malta, and you'll likely score hotel deals in this already affordable European destination . Temperatures in the mid-60s may be just shy of beach or snorkeling weather, but these balmy conditions are ideal for meandering through Valletta's stone streets, taking a "Game of Thrones" tour or cruising to the Blue Grotto. April visitors can also attend local celebrations like Festa Frawli, a strawberry festival in Mgarr, and the Malta International Fireworks Festival.

While Mardi Gras crowds descend on the Big Easy every February or March, New Orleans' festival season continues well into April with events like French Quarter Festival and New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. If you need more incentive, temperatures average in the 70s this time of year. And while New Orleans is a year-round foodie city , April is a peak month for crawfish. Host your own crawfish boil in a park or visit a local seafood establishment to experience this quintessential Cajun and Creole tradition.

April is an excellent time to travel to Madrid thanks to balmy temps, with average highs often sitting in the 60s. This is perfect weather for walking to and from must-visit sights in Spain's largest city, including Retiro Park, the Mercado de San Miguel, Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace of Madrid (the largest palace in Western Europe). Plus, you'll avoid this bustling city's scorching summer season – and its hordes of tourists – and will increase your chances of scoring a more affordable hotel rate.

warm places to visit april

Travelers flock to Joshua Tree National Park in April for two reasons: tolerable temperatures and the spring wildflowers. With average daily temperatures in the 70s, April is a great time for adventurers to bike, hike and rock climb without the stifling summer heat. Plus, the vibrant wildflowers that bloom for only a few weeks each year fill the otherwise stark landscape with color, creating excellent photo opportunities. While you're likely to encounter crowds this time of year, visiting after spring break can cut down on the congestion.

Composed of three islands, the Cayman Islands feature some of the best beaches in the Caribbean , including the world-famous Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman. However, some of this premier diving destination's best attractions are located in the sea. Must-see underwater attractions include Stingray City, Eden Rock, Devil's Grotto and the USS Kittiwake shipwreck. April – particularly the latter half of the month – is one of the best times to visit because of its great accommodation deals and its consistently warm, sunny weather.

Looking for an April getaway? The first full month of spring brings flowers to many places around the world, including the world-famous cherry blossoms that paint Washington, D.C. pink each year. There’s still time for snow sports fans to get in a few runs, but we have suggestions for travelers who are more than ready for sunshine and warm weather, too. Plus, a total solar eclipse will be visible from several North American destinations, so you should start planning now if you want to see this astronomical event. Here are the best places to travel in April 2024 in the U.S. and around the world.

Located in northeastern New York State about 300 miles from Manhattan, the Adirondack Mountains will be one of the best areas in the Northeast to see the April 8 solar eclipse.  “Guests in the Lake Placid region will experience spectacular views of the eclipse over the Adirondack Mountains as day turns to night for a brief three minutes,” according to Matthew Wheeler, general manager of High Peaks Resort . In the meantime, activities include late-season skiing, the newly remodeled Lake Placid Olympic Center, outdoor adventure at New Vida Preserve, and the Lake Placid Olympic Museum, home to one of the world’s largest collections of Winter Olympics memorabilia.

Where to Stay: High Peaks Resort is offering special eclipse packages and events. There’s also the Grand Adirondack Hotel, The Point on Saranac Lake, and The Lodge at Schroon Lake.

Spring is lovely in the nation’s capital, and the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival from March 20 to April 14 makes it a truly special time. I had the good fortune to be in Washington during the bloom a few years back, and I still recall the visitors’ awe, as well as my own, at the beauty of the delicate blossoms overhead and carpeting the ground at our feet. Mild weather encourages time outdoors strolling along the National Mall, The Wharf, and Union Market. The many fantastic museums in D.C. offer something for every interest, as well as perfect places to shelter on a chilly or rainy day.

Where to Stay: At The Wharf, Washington’s exciting waterfront neighborhood, stay at the Pendry Washington D.C or InterContinental Washington D.C. The Wharf . Other top hotel picks include The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown, Washington D.C., Salamander Washington D.C., and The Morrow Hotel.

These coastal cities, located less than 100 miles from Los Angeles, are ideal for a spring (or summer) escape from the city. Oxnard is known for strawberries, and in April, the berries begin to ripen, continuing throughout the summer. The region produces one-third of the state’s strawberry volume, and visitors flock to the area to pick their own fruit and enjoy strawberry shortcakes, pies, ice cream, and beverages. Nearby Ventura, home to beaches, hiking trails, and ferries to Channel Islands National Park , will host the California Strawberry Festival at Ventura County Fairgrounds later in the year from May 18-19.

Where to Stay: Zachari Dunes on Mandalay Beach in Oxnard reopened recently after a multi-million dollar transformation. Waypoint Ventura offers unique accommodations in restored vintage trailers.

Fans of wine, gorgeous scenery, and shoulder season travel will enjoy Napa Valley in April. Summer crowds are still months away, California poppies are in bloom, and you might catch the end of the wild mustard season’s bright yellow flowers . Tasting rooms are open, and Sullivan Rutherford Estate (a stunning winery I visited last year) offers Merlot Mastery , an immersive educational experience. At Silverado Resort, guests can up their racquet games with Pickleball Camp (April 20-21) and “Backhands, Vines, and Volleys” tennis camp (April 25-27), or go for a round of golf. Take in vineyard views from the Napa Valley Wine Train or enjoy the scenery with a drive among grapevines and fields of spring flowers.

Where to Stay: Meadowood Napa Valley is a personal favorite for its perfect combination of luxury and rustic atmosphere. I also enjoyed my stay at the romantic and elegant Poetry Inn where each suite is unique and all offer spectacular views.

Looking for spring skiing? Consider Utah’s capital your starting point and spend a few days in the city before you head for the slopes. You’ll find lively nightlife, restaurants, breweries, pubs, and views of snow-covered mountains to add to your anticipation. Less than 40 miles away, ski at Alta, Brighton, Solitude, Snowbird, and Park City, where there are snowy slopes for all levels of skiers, snowboarders, and winter sports fans. While I’m not a skier, I loved my winter visit to Park City where I tried snowshoeing (loved it!) and enjoyed the charming downtown and excellent restaurants.

Where to Stay: In Salt Lake City, we recommend staying at the Hyatt Regency Salt Lake City or Kimpton Hotel Monaco .

Temperatures in the low 80s with sunny days and cool nights make April an ideal time to visit Tampa. Spring also brings the Tampa Bay Wine & Food Festival (April 9-13), with a Chef Showdown competition, tasting events, and celebrity guests. The annual Taste at The Straz on April 27, held at the Straz Center on Tampa’s Riverwalk, raises funds for its outstanding theater productions, operas, and concerts. Stroll along the river, explore Water Street , and take a boat ride (or rent your own as I did on a trip last year, floating along in a craft that resembled my old ‘57 Chevy). Another personal favorite is the Ybor City Historic Walking Tour, where you can learn about Tampa’s role as a center of cigar production.

Where to Stay: JW Marriott Tampa Water Street features Beacon, a rooftop lounge with panoramic views. The Tampa Edition is a new five-star hotel on Channelside Drive, and the boutique Hotel Haya is a great option in Ybor City.

Flowers are blooming in the city that never sleeps, and visitors can find cherry blossoms at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden, and more than 30,000 varieties of flowers at the annual Macy’s Flower Show. The free event also includes seminars, demonstrations, and more. Spring showers are the perfect excuse to see a Broadway show, go shopping, or visit one of the best museums in New York City . There are also plenty of free things to do in NYC — stroll through Central Park, walk along the High Line, or enjoy the view from the Brooklyn Bridge.

Where to Stay: The InterContinental New York Times Square is a luxury spot, steps from Broadway theaters. I recently spent two nights there — I loved the buffet breakfast and The Stinger bar and restaurant. The new Virgin Hotels New York City is located in NoMad, a central location ideal for tourists who want to see it all.

The “Garden Island” is Hawaii’s oldest and northernmost island. Kauai’s weather is wetter than the other islands, but the rewards for waiting out those showers are waterfalls and rainforests with lush vegetation. Because April is part of the island’s shoulder season, you might score a deal on flights or accommodations, and you can still catch the tail end (pun intended) of whale-watching season. From relaxing on Kauai’s gorgeous beaches to tubing along mountaintop canals, there are many ways to enjoy the island.

Where to Stay: The luxe 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay opened last year. Families love Kukuiʻula , with a wide variety of amenities and accommodations.

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

April is one of the best times to visit London because it’s before the arrival of summer’s visitors and after the chilliest days of winter. The annual London Marathon, happening on April 21, is one of the world’s most popular, with Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, and Canary Wharf along the route. After the excitement, relax with afternoon tea at Fortnum & Mason, The Dorchester, or Brown’s and indulge in savory and sweet treats. If a cocktail is more your style, the city’s hotels offer plush lounges and creative menus — and we’ve rounded up the top cocktail bars in London so you can find the best sips.

Where to Stay: Last year, I stayed at the charming Beaverbrook Town House and toured the Chelsea Townhouse. The Westin London City features specialized services for marathon runners through a new Westin Hotels & Resorts program.

From Perth’s sophisticated urban vibe to the historic port town of Fremantle and the beaches of Rottnest Island, visitors have a variety of ways to enjoy Western Australia. Warm weather continues into April, and Perth’s Indian Ocean shores feature sandy beaches and stunning sunsets. Rottnest Island, a 30-minute ferry trip from Fremantle, is car-free with beaches, walking trails, cute quokkas , and an opportunity to learn about the island’s history and Aboriginal people with a visit to the Wadjemup Museum . Tour the area from above on a seaplane flight or from the sea aboard Seabourn’s Kimberley cruise, an expedition along the rugged coast. In the Margaret River region, about 100 wineries welcome visitors with tours and tastings.

Where to Stay: In the Margaret River region, Chambré Estate is a newly renovated lodge, and adults-only Edge Luxury Villas are built over a lake in a forested area. In Fremantle, stay at the recently restored historic Warders Hotel.

Renowned for UNESCO World Heritage Sites including ancient temples and shrines, Kyoto is especially beautiful during spring when the cherry blossoms bloom. The pink and white sakura , reminders of rebirth after winter, are celebrated with festivals, parades, and nightly illumination. April weather is pleasant for exploring Kyoto’s gardens, teahouses, and historical sites and for savoring traditional kaiseki cuisine. Kyoto is a short bullet train trip from Tokyo, and with InsideJapan Tours , guests can explore Kyoto on a private journey, small group tour, or self-guided adventure.

Where to Stay: Choose Roku Kyoto, LXR Hotels & Resorts or Garrya Nijo Castle Kyoto located next to Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Five-star Hotel the Mitsui Kyoto offers a Sakura Experience with private garden tours, a visit to a local temple, and afternoon tea, according to general manager Manabu Kusui who invites guests “to immerse themselves in the rich heritage and traditions of Kyoto through these cultural experiences.”

This lake in northern Italy can thank James Bond and George Clooney for some of its fame, but the historic villas, resorts, and charming towns that line its shores get most of the credit. April is shoulder season, when the hotels are reopening and visitors begin to arrive. The summer months, naturally, are the popular season, but spring is beautiful and the weather is mild. A boat ride is the best way to see the elegant villas with intricate landscaping, and several are open to the public for tours. I toured Villa del Balbianello a few years ago and marveled at the grounds, the building, the art, and the history. Lake Como’s resorts are among Italy’s most beloved, as confirmed by Travel + Leisure’s readers in the 2023 World’s Best Awards .

Where to Stay: Il Sereno topped the list, with Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni and Villa D’Este also receiving high scores in 2023. I have wonderful memories of Grand Hotel Tremezzo — so I’m happy it’s a readers’ favorite, too.

You can combine a visit to a great city with diverse neighborhoods, fabulous restaurants, and mild weather with a convenient late-season ski trip when you visit Vancouver. Just 15 minutes from downtown Vancouver, Grouse Mountain offers skiing and snowboarding until early May as well as a skating pond, dining, and more. About two hours north, world-class snow sports await at Whistler Blackcomb with more than 200 runs over 8,000 acres of terrain. Home to Vancouver International Airport, nearby Richmond offers history, art, an authentic fishing village, and the Richmond Olympic Oval, an indoor multi-sport center.

Where to Stay: In the heart of Vancouver, Rosewood Hotel Georgia and Fairmont Pacific Rim are luxurious options. Kim Carmichael, the spa director at Fairmont Pacific Rim, told T+L about their Nordic spa, a new outdoor hydrotherapy experience with hot and cold environments in a circuit. “With April being a time when we experience a rapidly changing climate in Vancouver, it’s an ideal opportunity for self-care.”

The third largest of more than 60 islands that make up the British Virgin Islands, Virgin Gorda offers pristine beaches, luxury resorts, and national parks. Swimming, diving, snorkeling, and boating are among things to do, and hikers can enjoy the view from the top of Gorda Peak. According to Emily Oakes, vice president of business at Oil Nut Bay, “The crystal blue waters and temperate weather, along with fewer crowds compared to earlier in the year, make April a lovely time to visit our beautiful island. Travelers wishing to fully immerse themselves in the island can book tours to explore The Baths, see Devil’s Bay National Park, and even scuba dive to the Wreck of the Chikuzen.” Visitors can arrive by air from Miami, St. Thomas, and now from San Juan via a semi-private jet . Tortola , Jost Van Dyke, Anegada, and several private island resorts are also popular BVI destinations.

Where to Stay: Rosewood Little Dix Bay , Bitter End Yacht Club , and Oil Nut Bay are among the best resorts in the British Virgin Islands, with luxe accommodations and ocean views.

Spring begins the European river cruise season, with most lines starting in mid-March. France is especially beautiful in April, and cruising is an ideal way to see many of the cities and small towns along the country’s rivers. Guests aboard AmaWaterways Paris and Normandy cruise begin in Paris and cruise the Seine to Le Havre, the historic Normandy Beaches, medieval Rouen, and Monet’s home in Giverny before returning to Paris. Viking offers a variety of ways to cruise the rivers of France, including a scenic Lyon and Provence cruise . Uniworld Boutique River Cruises also features cruises along France’s rivers, including trips as long as 22 days with the Ultimate France itinerary.

Where to Stay: No need to worry about finding hotels — unless you extend your trip at either end of your cruise. You also won’t have to plan transfers, find restaurants, or pack and unpack between stops — these are just a few of the major benefits of exploring Europe via river cruise. I’ve cruised the Rhine, Danube, Douro, and Nile, and I’m a fan of the relaxed pace, shore excursions, and views of the passing scenery that a river cruise provides.

Best places to visit in the USA in April/Spring

Top 20 Amazing Places to Explore in April in the USA

I think April is one of the best months to explore the country to find a bit of early sun and shake off those winter blues. Springtime is also one of the most beautiful times to travel, as this is when the weather gets warmer, and flowers are coming into bloom.

Whether you fancy a balmy city break or a hot beach vacation, here are my favorite spots to explore this month…

1. Naples, Florida

Naples, Florida - awesome April breaks

I think this place is just so dreamy! Located along the Gulf of Mexico, Naples is ideally situated to laze on the beach, escape to the Everglades or Ten Thousand Islands wilderness, or watch the Chubb Classic, one of the PGA events this month.

This month’s weather is warming up (around 20 degrees), but it has not hit the extremes of summer. With low rainfall and accommodation rates off-peak, so in my opinion it’s a great time to visit!

In addition to tranquil white beaches and adventures in the adjoining nature preserves, there is excellent shopping and dining.

Naples is easily accessible from Miami along the famous Tamiami Trail. I also love that it’s a quieter and more laid-back place to stay after the craziness of Miami!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1010 Sixth Ave. S. Naples, FL 34102, Phone: (239) 262-7300
  • Average temperatures – 18 degrees

My favorite highlights…

  • Going on a kayaking eco-tour and exploring the beautiful coastal mangrove forests.
  • Relaxing on the stunning white sand at Vanderbilt Beach before catching a breathtaking sunset.
  • Visiting the Naples Botanical Gardens home to over 170 acres of preservation land and cultivated gardens.

2. Texas Hill Country

Texas Hill Country Photo

The Texas Hill Country, just west of Austin, with its dramatic limestone and granite hills, is a scenic destination at any time of year.

Still, late March and this month are my personal must-go times, as this is when the area comes alive with carpets of wildflowers, especially Texas’ State flower, the bluebonnet, primroses, and Indian paintbrush.

I recommend exploring the region’s unique food. The food has a strong German heritage and Spanish influences, also seen in the architecture and local music. It’s also a key wine region, with over 80 wineries.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 160 Ingram Hills Rd, Ingram, TX 78025, Phone: +1 830-367-2151
  • Average temperatures – 15 to 26 degrees

My personal highlights…

  • Hiking to the Hamilton Pool and enjoying a picnic by the natural spring pool before taking a dip.
  • Cycling along the Willow City Loop whilst admiring the picturesque countryside and bluebonnet fields.
  • Walking the Texas Wine and Wildflower Trail and enjoying a complimentary tasting!

3. Santa Catalina Island, California

Santa Catalina Island, California

Part of the Channel Islands of California (22 miles off Southern California), I honestly believe this gorgeous spot is one of the best islands to visit in spring.

For starters, there’s the stunning island scenery before the summer crowds arrive, and this time of year has a much more relaxed atmosphere.

The weather averages around 17 degrees in the day, and once there, I would highly recommend just kicking back and waiting for island life to take hold!

It’s a rocky but very scenic island with white sand beaches, palm trees, a cute harbor filled with gently bobbing boats, and jaw-dropping sunsets. There are also plenty of accommodation options.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1 Green Pleasure Pier, Avalon, CA 90704, Phone: +1 310-510-1520
  • Average temperatures – 17 degrees
  • Experiencing the exhilarating Catalina Zip Line Eco Tour which reaches speed of nearly 40 mph at 600 feet above sea level!
  • Exploring the outback on an open-air four-wheel tour to discover remote areas others don’t usually see.
  • Taking part in a Happy Hour Tour where I tasted award-winning appetizers and speciality drinks.

4. Sedona, Arizona

Sedona Arizona - April vacation ideas

As you would expect of a city in Arizona, the climate can be extreme, so this month is an excellent time to visit as temperatures hover around 25 degrees.

Desert flowers bloom, and the hills resound with spring birdsong, making it a special time for hikers and bikers.

The red sandstone rocks of nearby Red Rock State Park pick up the rays of the rising and setting sun and glow as if they were on fire; my Instagram followers loved it!

The legendary Oak Tree Canyon meanders between Sedona and Flagstaff, and I would suggest adding this popular touring and hiking destination to your itinerary!

I personally have a huge fondness for the town as its favorite artist’s location, some of whom conduct workshops.

I suggest visiting some of the many spas and retreats, where you can restore and revive yourself surrounded by the area’s beauty. To me, staying here is always pure bliss!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Sedona Visitor Information Center, 331 Forest Road, Sedona, AZ, 86336, Phone: 928.282.7722
  • Average temperatures – 21 degrees
  • Hiring an ATV and driving across the scenic West Sedona Canyon outback.
  • Catching a stunning sunrise whilst enjoying a hot air balloon ride overlooking the Red Rocks.
  • Strolling Uptown Sedona to explore the shops, boutiques, and Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village.

5. Antelope Valley, California

Antelope Valley, California In America

I’d recommend visiting here for the beautiful California poppies that bloom in spring! Like all wildflowers, it depends on rainfall and temperature, so it isn’t easy to guarantee when they will be displayed.

However, this month is a pretty good bet if you want to see the poppies in Antelope Valley, as they bloom somewhere between March and May .

The state flower is celebrated in a Spring Festival, and in my opinion, the best time to view the miles of brilliant color is mid-morning when the flowers have warmed up and unfolded their petals. I promise you’ll love seeing the colors going on for as long as your eye can see!

I’d also suggest visiting nearby Lancaster City, an interesting place with a rich aviation and space travel history.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 37765 53rd St E, Palmdale, Phone: (661) 361-8254
  • Average temperatures – 23 degrees

My highlights…

  • Walking through the trails of the Poppy Reserve to admire the Instagrammable views of the vibrant wildflowers.
  • Checking out the fun events and rides at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds.
  • I learned about history and appreciated local artists’ works at the Lancaster Museum of Art and History .

6. Nā Pali Coast, Hawaii

Na Pali Coast, Hawaii

Hawaii has only two seasons: summer (or Kau, from May to October) and winter (or Hooilo, from November to this month). At this time of year, there is much to see and do, from watching surfing competitions to exploring the dramatic scenery.

I would recommend the awe-inspiring coastline of Nā Pali in northwest Kauai, with views of dramatic razor-sharp mountains and rocky terrain, except for drivers, for the shore is too rugged to contemplate building a road along it.

For the adventurous, I would highly recommend trying the incredible hiking trails and kayaking tours, while there are catamaran and helicopter trips for those who are not so daring. There are also stunning landscapes, waterfalls, and even archaeological sites!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Kikiaʻola Small Boat Harbor, Kekaha, HI 96752, Phone:  +1 808-635-1131
  • Experiencing the 17 miles of the coast from a different perspective by taking a sailing tour.
  • Enjoying the adventure of a lifetime with a helicopter ride overlooking the dramatic cliff.
  • Hiking along the Kalalau Trail to enjoy breathtaking views of the ocean and greenery.

7. Tidal Basin, Washington DC

Best places to visit in the USA in April/Spring

This is a famously beautiful spring break. Head to the Tidal Basin in Washington DC, and you’ll see the pretty blossom trees, which were a gift from Japan in 1912!

The historic trees signal the beginning of spring and have an average peak bloom date that falls in this month. I highly recommend taking a trip to see them as the trees explode into a wonderful sea of light pink and white blossoms.

Around 70% of the cherry blossom trees’ flowers are open around the 4th, but sometimes the bloom peak occurs as late as the 18th of the month. The bloom lasts around 14 days but is well worth seeing, and I suggest taking your camera!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1501 Maine Ave SW, Washington, Phone (202) 479-2426
  • Average temperatures – 19 degrees
  • Enjoying a bike ride along the stunning loop and array of national monuments.
  • Renting a paddleboat and enjoying some time spent relaxing on the calm water.
  • Spending the day at the National Cherry Blossom Festival and seeing live entertainment amongst the flowers.

8. Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Grand Teton National Park Springtime USA

A few miles south Of Yellowstone and part of the Rockies, the Teton Range is a majestic range of mountains separated from the plains of Jackson Hole by a dramatic fault. The Snake River meanders through the range and is fed by several of the lakes in the area.

The skiing season closes towards the end of March/beginning of this month. It is too early for the summer crowds, so in my opinion, it’s an excellent time to visit this beautiful place (I would suggest just wrapping up warmly as it’s still very chilly this month!).

A single visit will not do the Park justice, as there are over 300 km of hiking trails to explore and conquer.

The mountains are vast and awe-inspiring, and I love spotting wildlife here, including large herds of bison and other animals living in this unspoilt wilderness.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address (for post only): Grand Teton National Park, P.O. Box 170, Moose, WY 83012-0170, Phone: 307-739-3300
  • Average temperatures – 8 degrees
  • Taking a scenic drive to Signal Mountain and seeing picturesque panoramic views overlooking the park.
  • Discovering the Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point located on the western side of Jenny Lake.
  • Hiking along the trail from String Lake to Leigh Lake (it’s okay for all ages and ability levels).

9. Bisti Badlands, New Mexico

Bisti Badlands New Mexico

I think these rather forbidding plains, with their bizarre rocky outcrops, are a gem in New Mexico .

The fossils here are impressive, and new dinosaur species are still being unearthed. The “Bisti Beast,” for example, was discovered in 1998, a new tyrannosaurus species.

As recently as 2017, the skull of a Parasaurolophus cyrtocristatus, a strange-looking duck-billed dinosaur, was found, only the second of this species!

I personally think that this month is a good crossover time to visit. Between the rigors of winter and the heat of summer, it is comfortable to hike or wander among the rocks.

Temperatures hover around 19 degrees here, so it’s perfect for long hikes.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 3041 E. Main Street, Farmington, Phone: 800-448-1240
  • Average temperatures – 18 degrees
  • Hiking along the Bisti Badlands Trail and discovering the cool Cracked Eggs rock formations.
  • Capturing an Insta-worthy shot of the unique Alien Throne along the Valley of Dreams Loop.
  • Exploring the short Ah-shi-sle-pah Trail and seeing the dramatic hoodoo views.

10. Palm Springs, California

Palm Springs Spring Break

I love this place for sun and hot weather this month, as temperatures reach 31 degrees. It has always been famous as a retreat for showbiz stars, retirees, and snowbirds escaping cold winters.

There is entertainment, spas, and shopping aplenty, as well as many retro-styled hotels and about 100 golf courses. There are lots of other opportunities, especially for outdoor experiences.

The area is well-provided with hiking trails, but I highly recommend going on a fun Jeep adventure and cultural experiences like the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum .

I would also suggest taking the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which rotates on its short journey to Monte San Jacinto State Park.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Palm Springs Visitor Information Center, 2901 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262, Phone: 800-347-7746 | 760-778-8418
  • Average temperatures – 31 degrees
  • Strolling down the city sidewalks to discover the famous Palm Springs Walk of Stars, created in 1992.
  • Checking out the Palm Springs Art Museum, which displays contemporary and modern art and I loved the stunning sculpture garden.
  • Wandering through the Sunnylands and explore 12 acres of beautiful botanic gardens.

11. Port Townsend, Washington

Port Townsend Beach Washington

Located in Jefferson County, around two hours from Seattle , Port Townsend, in my opinion, is a good choice if you’re looking for a relaxed spring break without any crowds.

This month, temperatures average around 14 degrees, so I recommend packing warm clothes before you leave. But it will be worth it!

The city has long trails and beaches, fine restaurants, fantastic art and cultural experiences, and a fascinating maritime history.

I personally loved the Point Wilson Lighthouse , The Jefferson Museum of Art and History , and The Fort Worden State Historical Park .

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 2409 Jefferson St, Port Townsend, WA 98368, +1 360-385-2722
  • Average temperatures – 14 degrees
  • Buying fresh, local produce and artisan products from a Farmer’s Market.
  • Indulging in a beer and wine tasting at Port Townsend Vineyards and Port Townsend Brewing.
  • Walking the beautiful čičməhán Trail, where you can find 3-, 6- or 12-mile loops.

12. Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs

Garden of the Gods Colorado

Located just an hour from Denver , Colorado Springs is home to the Garden of the Gods , a significant attraction with scenic sandstone rocks. This month, the snow may not yet have melted on Pikes Peak, which overlooks the Park, adding more impact to the dramatic scenery.

I recommend stopping at the Visitor and Nature Centre, which includes an interactive museum.

Several trails, about 20 km long, are available, including the Perkins Central Garden Trail, which is accessible for wheelchairs and prams.

You can walk, cycle (or Segway), or even take a Jeep ride (my favourite!), and afterwards, I would suggest refreshing yourself in the cafeteria and just taking in the views.

Dogs are also welcome on leads, and there are even some areas where they can walk off-leash. This is also a popular and challenging spot for rock climbing, but permits are required.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1805 N 30th St, Colorado Springs, CO 80904, +1 719-634-6666
  • Going on a fun segway tour and exploring the Garden.
  • Climbing across the surrounding large carved rocks.
  • Stopping by the hip and healthy Bean Sprouts Cafe for a bite to eat after my adventures.

13. Miami, Florida

Miami - awesome places to go in April

Miami is the world’s playground, with something for everyone, from nature lovers and golfers to compulsive shoppers and nightclubgoers.

It is always hot and humid, but this is a great time to visit because it’s cooler, there is less rainfall, and temperatures can reach around 26 degrees.

I love that its proximity to Cuba and the rest of the Caribbean gives it a tropical and exotic flavor quite different from that of much of the country.

I recommend celebrity spotting around South Beach (or in their hideouts in Coral Gables) and exploring the Everglades or the other preserves, like Big Cypress.

South Beach is also a must-visit for Art Deco fans, and I also suggest visiting quieter beaches such as Bal Harbour or North Beach.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 701 Brickell Ave., Suite 2700, Miami, FL 33131, Phone: (305) 539-3000
  • Average temperatures – 26 degrees
  • Taking a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter ride overlooking the breathtaking Miami skyline.
  • Spending the day at Sunny Isles Beach and enjoy some swimming, diving, and water sports in the cooling waters.
  • Going on a tour of Miami’s most well-known film set locations.

14. Flint Hills, Kansas

Flint Hills, Kansas USA

This is a special place to visit as grasslands are shrinking worldwide, mainly because they provide excellent land for cultivation.

The prairies of North America and the life they support are steadily being restored and protected but have mainly been converted to farmland.

Spring brings warmer weather, rain, and sunshine, so in my opinion, it’s a vibrant and verdant time to visit. Elks are now extinct in the area, but the bison herds are starting to come back.

I highly recommend standing on the slopes and gazing at the grasslands, which have looked exactly like this for thousands of years and are still home to birds and animals that thrive in the prairie!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 315 S 3rd St, Manhattan 66502, Phone: +1 785-587-2726
  • Taking a free bus tour of Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and learning about the culture whilst admiring the gorgeous scenery.
  • Appreciating paintings from famous artists Judith and Ken Mackey Flint Hills Gallery.
  • Enjoying a road trip through the National Scenic Byway, which is 48 miles long and is home to many historical sites and quaint towns.

15. San Diego, California

San Diego Spring Break

I personally think this month is a great time to visit San Diego as it’s much less crowded, there is still plenty of sun, and temperatures hover around 20 degrees.

Most people flock to “Beach City” for family fun on the beaches. Mission Beach is a good swimming beach, with a boardwalk and rollercoaster, but I recommend checking out the tidal pools at La Jolla, when the tide is low, and snorkeling at La Jolla Cove, part of the Underwater Park.

If you’ve had too much sun, I would suggest heading for Balboa Park, where you would need at least a week to explore, taking in the 18 diverse museums or some cultural events. The Air and Space Museum is affiliated with the Smithsonian and has something for kids of all ages.

I would suggest tasting some Baja cuisine, dancing the night away in one of the nightclubs, or viewing one of the many shows on offer.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 996 N Harbor Dr, San Diego, Phone: (619) 236-1242
  • Average temperatures – 20 degrees
  • Having fun at Belmont Park is filled with exciting rides and adrenaline-pumping rollercoasters.
  • Catching one of San Diego’s best sunsets at La Jolla Cove, a perfect spot for Instagrammable shots.
  • Exploring the vibrant nightlife scene at Gaslamp Quarter, filled with bars, lounges, and music venues.

16. Nantucket Island, Massachusetts

Nantucket Island, Massachusetts

Nantucket was once a thriving whaling center. Even though the population today is only 11,000, it can swell into 50,000 during peak tourist season, so in my opinion, the shoulder months are an excellent time to visit.

Nantucket is reached by ferry from Cape Cod, a 30-mile trip. I suggest visiting this month because it is off-peak, accommodation prices are more affordable, and it is also during the daffodil season.

The flowers are growing everywhere, and the locals go daffodil-crazy for the whole month, which includes car parades, picnics, and daffodil dress-up competitions.

I would recommend visiting the Whaling Museum (although thankfully, most people are against the cruelty of catching whales now!) and walking, cycling, or even catching a bus to view the historic buildings dotted around the island. There are also guided tours.

If you have children with you, there are plenty of family-friendly activities for them, from beaches to boat rides.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Nantucket Department of Culture & Tourism. 25 Federal Street, Nantucket, MA 02554, Phone: 508-228-0925 Fax: 508-325-5443
  • Average temperatures – 13 degrees
  • Renting a bike and exploring the island’s 35 miles of multi-use paths.
  • Visiting the three historic lighthouses – Sankaty Head Light, Brant Point Light, and Great Point Light.
  • Spending the afternoon shopping downtown, home to many cute boutiques and independent stores.

17. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach spring time vacation

Myrtle Beach is a small but fast-growing city on the South Carolina coast that attracts around 20 million tourists a year. It offers a warm climate and welcoming beaches.

In my opinion, this month is a great time to visit, as it is a bit quieter than March when Ontarians flock to Myrtle Beach to escape their weather.

It is also when the “Coastal Uncorked” festival of food and drink is held, and I would highly recommend timing your visit for then (it’s towards the end of the month).

The resort has 80 golf courses on offer, as well as nightclubs, theatres, and concerts. However, the warmth and the long sandy beaches bring most tourists to Myrtle Beach again and again!

I love the Boardwalk, and it’s one of the best in the country. It’s great for a stroll along the coastline, or if you need a rest, hop on the SkyWheel and view the beaches and the Atlantic Ocean.

There is also a water park and an amusement park for the kids, which is a bonus!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1200 N Oak St, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577, Phone: +1 843-626-7444
  • Average temperatures – 22 degrees
  • Checking out the Hollywood Wax Museum and posing with some of my favorite A-listers.
  • Enjoying a stroll along the boardwalk that is 1.2 miles long and filled with fun attractions, rides, shops, and restaurants.
  • Going on a thrill-seeking adventure in the five-acre forest treetops at the Radical Ropes Adventure Park.

18. Caddo Lake, Texas and Louisiana

Caddo Lake Louisiana and Texas

This beauty spot is located in Texas and Louisiana; in my opinion, it’s one of the region’s best-kept secrets.

Attracting families, couples, nature lovers, and wildlife watchers, plenty of vacation accommodation rentals exist, including camping spots, cabins, bed and breakfasts, and some nearby hotels.

In Caddo Lake State Park, you can swim hike, picnic, camp, or stay in a cabin, look for a geocache, but I highly recommend boating.

However, be warned—alligators live in the park. Read up on the area’s alligator safety tips before your visit!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 245 Park Road 2, Karnack, Phone: (903) 679-3351
  • Average temperatures – 24 degrees
  • Renting a kayak and exploring the water trails to discover the unique landscape.
  • Taking an early morning boat tour and watching a romantic sunrise or sunset over the lake.
  • Camping overnight at a beautiful shore-side campsite.

19. Blue Ridge Parkway National Park, North Carolina

Blue Ridge Parkway in April

If you are planning a springtime road trip, I suggest that you include this spot—all 755 kilometers of it—on your list, as it takes you through scenic areas of North Carolina and Virginia.

The parkway is closed during winter but opens in spring again. Despite the closure, it has been one of the country’s most-visited parks since 1946.

There are attractions en route, and I recommend stopping at the visitor centre, but in my opinion, what makes the Parkway unique and special is its fantastic biodiversity.

Whether it is the 4000 species of plants, over 250 bird species, or the chance of spotting black bears ambling along, this is a nature watcher’s hotspot!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 195 Hemphill Knob Rd, Asheville, NC 28803, Phone:+1 828-298-5330
  • Hiking the breathtaking Blue Ridge Parkway Waterfalls via a park trail.
  • Taking a trip to one of the local vineyards and experiencing world-class wine tasting.
  • Visiting the Blue Ridge Music Center, which hosts several music events at its outdoor concert venue.

20. Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor in Maine

Although temperatures aren’t the warmest (average temperatures hover around 12 degrees in the day) I personally think there are many reasons to visit Bar Harbour, a town on Mount Desert Island along Maine’s Frenchman Bay in Maine this time of year.

For starters, you’ll get good deals on accommodation as it falls before the summer peak season, and you’ll also arrive before the crowds arrive.

I’m a huge fan of this place. I love that the scenery is quaint and beautiful, with gorgeous coastal beauty. I love the bobbing yachts and boats, the incredible ocean, the neighbouring island views, and the atmospheric weather, which ranges from sparkling sunlight to thick fog and mist.

I think Bar Harbor is a relaxing destination, as well as being the gateway to the mountains and the rugged scenery of nearby Acadia National Park.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 2 Cottage St, Bar Harbor, ME 04609, Phone: +1 207-288-5103
  • Average temperatures – 12 degrees

My favourite highlights…

  • Hopping on Oli’s Trolley to explore Bar Harbor with a narrated tour.
  • Grabbing food at Geddy’s on the main street and admiring the view overlooking Frenchman Bay.
  • Discovering the stunning landscape along the coastline via an e-bike rental at Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop.

The 25 best holiday destinations in April

By Sarah James

The best holiday destinations in April 2024

Could April be the best of all worlds? Summer comes early thanks to great weather in short-haul island escapes in southern Europe ; spring skiing keeps snow bunnies swooshing in the Alps; and there are several sunny city breaks you can get to by oh-so-eco-friendly train. It’s also the best time of year to catch some bona fide bucket-list natural wonders – found everywhere from South America to southern Africa . Simply put: there’s a holiday for you, no matter your jam. Whether you're looking to find out where is hot in April or simply for the best long weekend break over Easter, see our guide to the best places to visit in April along with our tips on how to make your trip as sustainable as possible .

1. Crete, Greece

Temperature in April: 20°C high; 11°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 3 hours 50 minutes Time difference: GMT +2

As the southernmost of the Greek islands , Crete is also the hottest. April makes a great shoulder season – outside of the Easter school holidays, of course – with the mercury rising amiably before summer’s sweltering peak. Take advantage of thinner crowds with lazy days on blockbuster beaches – ordinarily packed, pink-hued Elafonisi should be left in relative peace. Note that the further south you go, the more likely you’ll find a truer Crete , unbothered by resorts. Spectacular, rugged mountain drives thread through lazy villages, where tavernas typically produce their own meat, cheese and wine. You can bet on a few free rounds of house raki after the meal, too. Better plan on staying the night.

Sustainable travel tip: Two excellent eco-resorts are tucked away in Crete’s more traditional corners. Milia is a mountain retreat that runs on solar energy and natural spring water, and is perfectly placed for hiking adventures; and Dalabelos is a working farm that offers 10 stone cottages and two luxury villas, sweeping sea views, food grown onsite, and a chance to get involved with the wine and olive harvest.

Where to stay: We love the authentic Cretan vibe at Blue Palace Resort & Spa , set on a private pebble beach in Elounda. For families, Domes of Elounda feels more like a village than a resort, with an olive tree-shaded sandy beach, several large pools, a kids club and even an elegant spa with a dedicated kid's treatment menu. In Chania, Domes Zeen Chania is another standout family spot, where the kid's club is a whimsical oasis with yurts and teepees. For more, see our pick of the best hotels in Crete .

Amsterdam turns orange on 27 April, when King’s Day brings a brightly-attired army of partygoers to the city’s streets, parks, and boats bobbing about the canals. This is the Dutch in their good-time prime. It’s also peak season for tulips, with large patchworks of vibrant flowers blooming all around. Make the 30-minute drive to Keukenhof, one of the world’s largest flower gardens, for rainbow-hued displays. And as one of Europe’s chicest stays, Amsterdam isn’t short on fabulous design hotels ( The Hoxton Amsterdam and Soho House Amsterdam ), Instagrammable brunches (we like Little Collins’ potato waffles and kimchi Bloody Marys), or farm-to-table cuisine (more accurately nursery-to-table at De Kas, inside a greenhouse).

Sustainable travel tip: Direct trains run from Amsterdam to London St Pancras, as well as the other way (although upcoming station works will mean changes at Brussels later in 2024). Launching with two services a day, the train lands you canalside in just over four hours (zippier than the plane when you factor in travel to and from the airport).

Where to stay: At canalside The Hoxton, Amsterdam , which is stuffed with vintage furniture. For canal views, book into The Dylan , an intimate hotel set within the heart of the historic hotel district. For more options, these are our picks for the best hotels in Amsterdam or for a private stay, we like the look of these Airbnbs in Amsterdam .

For short-haul sunshine in Europe in April, Cyprus is an excellent destination for a beach holiday, or for walking. This roughly beautiful and interesting island in the southernmost reaches of the Mediterranean is wonderful in springtime. It's beach weather at the coast – warm enough to swim in the sea, and not yet too hot; while in the rugged interior, April is the greenest month of the year, and the hillsides are bursting with wonderful light and colour: wildflowers and orchids grow along the pathways and fragrant herbs scent the air. .

Sustainable travel tip: Consider moving your trip inland, away from the coastal resorts. Various operators offer cycling and walking holidays through the island’s traditional villages and unspoiled mountain scenery, where you’ll eat in small tavernas serving home-grown fare, stop off for a tipple at any number of vineyards and stay in locally owned B&Bs.

Where to stay: At classic hotel Anassa , which is as suited to families as couples, and is one of our favourite hotels in Europe . In Paphos, Amavi is the adults'-only antidote to the playgrounds and kids' clubs that line the coastline. Be sure to book in a sushi supper at the rooftop restaurant. See our pick of the best hotels in Cyprus for more.

4. Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Temperature in April: 33°C high; 21° low Season: Summer Travel time from UK: 7 hours Time difference: GMT +4

Dubai is a sun-worshipper’s paradise year-round, but things start to warm up in April. If you visit after May, hotel rates are considerably cheaper due to the sweltering heat, but the start of the UAE’s official summer season offers the best balance. Spend days lounging in beach clubs or by the hotel pool before jacket-free evening adventures around the glittering marina. Restaurants, bars and hotels are constantly looking to outdo each other. This quest results in headline-grabbing renovations, interiors created for social media feeds and aesthetes, and something new to discover at every turn. Zenon, Signor Sassi, and Eugéne Eugéne are some of the addresses discerning foodies should know in 2024, while the Lana, a spectacular new hotel by the Dorchester Collection, opens its doors at the start of the year.

Sustainable travel tip: Eco-conscious diners, look no further than Boca. The Mediterranean restaurant works around five sustainability pillars that caught the Michelin Guide's attention – the restaurant is a recipient of a coveted Green Michelin Star. Mocktails rival traditional cocktails, there are more than 400 wines to choose from, and the amount of tapas choices warrants several return visits.

Where to stay: Atlantis The Royal was undeniably the hotel opening of the year when a spectacular light and firework show – and a Beyoncé concert – marked the launch in February 2023. It resembles a city as much as a hotel and is rightfully at the top of many bucket lists. Within the complex, you’ll find Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, Nobu by the Beach, and sky-high infinity pool bar Cloud 22 – there’s virtually nothing the resort doesn’t offer.

5. Ibiza, Spain

Temperature in April: 20°C high; 11°C low Season: Spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 25 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

Millions descend on this Balearic island between May and October for some of the world’s best parties. From the unreal visuals at Hï Ibiza to the bright lights of Pacha , many visitors miss out on Ibiza’s authentic charm. However, visit a few weeks before the mega-clubs open and discover a completely different side to the white isle. Temperatures are high enough for a dip in the sea towards the end of the month, and it’s just light jackets to hand when heading out in the evening. Ibiza’s reputation is greater than its actual size, and a week is more than enough to discover a hefty handful of beach towns and villages. Check ahead to ensure what openings are seasonal and which bucket-list restaurants are open for business; there’s still life in the Old Town and areas such as Santa Eulalia. For the most authentic Ibizan escape, head north – it’s much more untouched than the island’s south, with rugged landscapes and beaches tucked well away from the crowds.

Sustainable travel tip: From a scheme phasing out single-use plastics in Ibiza and Formentera to a project designed to protect the Ibizan lizard, IbizaPreservation is behind dozens of projects on the island. Stay in the loop via the team’s newsletters, and look into volunteer opportunities if a longer trip is on the cards.

Where to stay: Ibizan holidays in April are best for exploring the island’s natural beauty spots and attractions rather than sunbathing on dazzling beaches. Hence, a seafront spot isn’t so necessary. Check into Cas Gasi , a boutique hotel and spa in the heart of the countryside, for a blissful base. Learn about the property’s regenerative farming project, ease aching muscles with an outdoor massage, and sample a taste of the island in the organic restaurant. Elsewhere, Hotel Petunia , on Ibiza’s gorgeous south-west coast, is opening following a complete refurbishment – although the property doesn’t open until the end of the month.

6. Marrakech, Morocco

Temperature in April: 23°C high; 11°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 3 hours 35 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

Turns out, Marrakech is not hot all year round. Yes, it's in Africa , near the Sahara but in winter it can be chilly and only marginally brighter than Manchester , and that zellige tiling doesn't offer much cosy warmth. Our tip: wait til spring, the best time to visit Morocco , when it starts to warm up a bit and you can at least hope to waft around your pool in a floaty kaftan, rather than hunkering down with a book, wearing 12 cardigans and a scratchy djellaba. The hillsides are bursting with almond blossom, and the city comes alive with colour, and sunlight casts ornate shadows in every sensational courtyard.

Sustainable travel tip: You can get to Marrakech without setting foot in a plane or a car, though you should expect it to take a couple of days. (Eurostar to Paris; high-speed TGV to Barcelona; high-speed AVE to Algeciras; ferry to Tangier; then, finally, a high-speed Al Boraq train to Marrakech.)

Where to stay: La Mamounia gets our pick as not just the best hotel in Marrakech but also one of the best in the world . For a riad-style stay, there are three houses on the grounds, but the rooms with views out to the Koutoubia Mosque and over the rooftops of the Red City are the ones that give you the best sense of place. For something more low-key, Riad Sadaka had a complete makeover in 2021, and its courtyard plunge pool is one of the prettiest in the city. For more, see our edit of the best riads in Marrakech .

7. Lisbon, Portugal

Temperature in April: 19°C high; 11°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 45 minutes Time difference: GMT +0

Wonderful Lisbon has absolutely every element vital for a great weekend break (or more). Burgeoning social, food, arts and design scenes; great little places to eat and drink (read about Lisbon's best restaurants and bars ); interesting old corners and markets to poke around (see our guide to the best shops in Lisbon ) with just the right amount of crumbling, poster-paint-bright historic facades. There are old palaces to stay in and Lisbon rooftop bars with pools to hang out in. It's beside the sea! And it's all ridiculously, delightfully affordable. Go at any time – though April is a great time to go to Lisbon, when the days are long and sunny and the cobbled streets are beginning to warm up.

Sustainable travel tip: Not only can Lisbon be reached by train from London in less than 24 hours, it’s also a chance to travel in style on the overnight Sud Express train, which has sleeper cabins with private showers, and a café/bar. First, catch the Eurostar from London to Paris, then the high-speed TGV to Hendaye on the French/Spanish border, followed by a night on the rails. Arrive in Lisbon refreshed and ready to go.

Where to stay: Memmo Alfama has an in-house rooftop wine bar and affordable rooms. In the bohemian Bairro Alto area, The Lumiares is designed to feel like a home away from home with rooms ranging from self-contained studios to Mezzanine rooms occupying two levels. See our list of the best hotels in Lisbon for more.

8. Thailand

Temperature in April: 30°C high; 26°C low Season: dry Travel time from UK: 11 hours 30 minutes Time difference: GMT +7

What’s just as raucous as a Full Moon Party, but significantly wetter? Thai New Year, or Songkran, that’s what. A five-day public holiday in mid-April, the country essentially turns into one giant, good-natured water fight, with locals and tourists alike soaking each other in the streets. One of the more enthusiastic places to embrace this soggy ritual is Koh Samui. But the island of your budget backpacker days has – in parts, at least – grown up. A world away from flimsy beach huts and lethal bucket ‘cocktails’, Kamalaya is a jungly wellness retreat staffed by monks. Or the Four Seasons remains as ‘be seen’ as ever. The private infinity pools of its hillside villas make for a more relaxing way to get soaked. For more ideas, see our guide to the best islands in Thailand .

Sustainable travel tip: Thai staff who work in busy beach destinations such as Koh Samui must contend with the high costs of living in a tourist town, without comparable wages, so the best thing you can do here is tip – generously, and often.

Where to stay: In Koh Samui, the villas at Banyan Tree have private pools and unbeatable panoramic views of Lamai Bay. For a castaway experience, head to Six Senses on the hilly little island of Yao Noi, where you'll find stilted thatched-roof villas and a hilltop infinity pool. In Chiang Mai, treetop pavilions, private residences and pool villas sit in 31 acres of manicured gardens and a rice paddy at the Four Seasons . See our edit of the best hotels in Thailand for more.

9. Turkish Coast

Temperature in April:  21°C high; 10°C low Season:  spring Travel time from UK:  4 hours Time difference: GMT +3

The holiday season doesn’t get started until May on the Turquoise Coast – which is precisely why in-the-know Istanbulites go in April for an early dose of spring sunshine, before the crowds, when the coastline is bursting into riotous bloom. Find yourself a suntrap – a swimming deck, a sheltered bay, a waterside cabana or taverna, anywhere along the Aegean-Mediterranean coast – Bodrum, Datça, Fethiye, Kas, where fishing villages are bright with bougainvillaea in every shade of pink winding around blue-painted balconies.

April is prime time for walking the Lycian Way, too – not too hot, but already dry and sunny, wildflowers bursting into life once more. The 500km trail follows ancient caravan trails and coast paths, dipping in and out of forests, rustic stone hamlets, and Roman sites, down into dramatic ravines and cake slices of coves, only accessible on foot or by boat – your reward for your efforts.

Sustainable travel tip: Earthouse Retreat is a sustainably built, solar-powered set of clay cob houses, miles from anywhere on the little-visited Datça Peninsula – they are simple, cheap, and completely charming.

Where to stay: Maçakizi , on the Bodrum Peninsula, is one of the coolest and loveliest beach hotels in the world. Multigenerational groups and families with older kids might feel more at home in the super-stylish pool villas at Bodrum Loft , with the bonus of a hotel restaurant and bar on site. For younger children, Hillside Beach Club in private, idyllic little Kalemya Bay offers innovative creative activities, plus hangouts for teenagers.

10. Seville, Spain

Temperature in April:  24°C high; 11°C low Season:  spring Travel time from UK:  2 hours 45 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

Andalucia ’s saffron-hued capital is all vibrance and passion – and in springtime most of all. The ancient cobbled streets are scented with orange blossom and colourful with parades: first comes the ecclesiastical solemnity and brass bands of Holy Week leading up to Easter; then, two weeks later, an altogether more vibrant fiesta, the Feria de Abril, a whirl of parties and music, colourful costumes, Sevillanos on horseback and flamenco dancers stamping to the staccato of castanets. Take a side trip to the Costa de la Luz and seek out a sheltered bay for some beach time – it’s the warmest spot in mainland Spain in April.

Sustainable travel tip: Shop in the markets for locally grown produce, find homemade souvenirs at Mercado El Postigo which supports local artists, and made-in-Spain fair trade and organic clothing at Verde Moscú among other independents in Benita Soho.

Where to stay: Palacio hotels in Seville abound, and the grandest of them all is Hotel Alfonso XIII , where rooms alternate between Andalusian , Castilian and Moorish decorative styles; with grand stairways, sweeping corridors and ornamental patterns everywhere the eye can see. For a boutique stay, check in to one of the 16 rooms at Corral del Rey – two have private pool terraces.

11. The Nile, Egypt

Temperature in April: 29°C high; 16°C low (Cairo) Season:  spring Travel time from UK:  5 hours 10 minutes Time difference: GMT +2

Egyptomania is back in vogue like it’s the 1920s, thanks to various happenings in the last few years, including the centenary of the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb, the opening of the colossal Grand Egypt Museum in Giza, and Kenneth Branagh’s remake of Death on the Nile . Cruises down the world’s longest river are to be had on increasingly charming old-school boats, and April is the last chance to sail from Cairo down to Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, all the way to Aswan when the weather is hot and sunny, but not yet unbearable in the south.

Sustainable travel tip: To substantially reduce the carbon footprint of your trip, sail in a felucca – a traditional wooden sailing boat – rather than a motorised yacht. They’re also ineffably romantic.

Where to stay: A wooden riverboat with two gigantic sails, La Flaneuse du Nil is one of the most elegant boats you’ll see on the river, recapturing the deco fabulousness of Agatha Christie’s day. Original Travel offers cruises on La Flaneuse du Nil, as well as on feluccas, houseboats and steamships.

The winter-sun state is wonderful in spring and autumn. It's one of the best places to go on holiday in April for beach breaks or outdoor adventures, with long sunny days and warm-but-not-hot weather – just right for tailing alligators through the mangroves or galloping around a cattle ranch, cruising around Miami 's art district or having a classic family beach holiday on the Gulf of Mexico.

Sustainable travel tip: The Florida Green Lodging programme recognises hotels and B&Bs that are doing their bit to conserve Florida’s natural resources in several areas, including educating customers and employees, recycling, conserving water and reducing energy consumption. 13. Coachella, California

Temperature in April: 27°C high; 13°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 10 hours 50 minutes Time difference: GMT -8

It’s the place to be seen in April. And even if you’re a bit over trust-fund babies strutting around in denim underwear and apache headdresses, the lineup often makes it one of the best festivals in the world . In typically eclectic style, The Weeknd, Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion all played in 2022. Another reason to show up, of course, is tacking on a little jaunt to retro party playground Palm Springs . Do the pool thing at Ace Hotel and Swim Club (known for its Coachella pool parties), then find mid-century modern design Eden at the historic Sunnylands estate. Get into the mood with our what to wear at Coachella guide.

Sustainable travel tip: Music festivals don’t tend to be the most sustainable way to spend a weekend, but Coachella has come up with a few ways to reduce your footprint: a recycling store that offers various rewards for empty bottles and cans; an energy playground where playing on a see-saw, um, helps power a phone-charging station; and prizes for carpoolers.

Where to stay: At Ace Hotel and Swim Club in Palm Springs.

14. Toronto, Canada

Temperature in April: 12°C high; 4°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 7 hours 50 minutes Time difference: GMT -5

Canada ’s biggest city, Toronto is a thrumming commercial and arts hub that still manages to be polite, tidy and clean – how Canadian! Also very Canadian: its long, bitter winters. Towards the end of April, though, the city thaws and cherry blossoms burst forth – in central High Park, paths flanked by candyfloss-coloured blooms need no filter. Find more of Toronto’s new lease of life at The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) – relocated a few years to a disused, five-storey aluminium factory. Not forgetting the delightful little indie shops and restaurants of the Distillery District, a repurposed Victorian whiskey distillers. Don’t miss dinner at Cluny Bistro: will it be the truffled chicken, or crispy wild boar?

Sustainable travel tip: The Gladstone is the first B-Corp certified hotel in Canada – an accolade that recognises high standards of environmental performance and social responsibility. Powered by 100 per cent renewable energy, the hotel also recycles and composts all waste and has a green roof that contributes to natural cooling of the environment, while each guest room is designed by a different local artist.

Where to stay: Sharp Broadview Hotel has a day-to-night café, a cool restaurant, and a gorgeous rooftop bar.

15. Naples, Italy

Temperature in April: 18°C high; 9°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 40 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

If Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels stoked curiosity about Italy ’s under-visited southern city, HBO’s smash-hit TV adaptation, My Brilliant Friend , has set that curiosity aflame. Less of an Italian Disneyland than Florence , Venice or Rome , Naples is the real deal. Street art adorns 18th-century buildings and public housing alike. Along slender, cobbled lanes, small, family-run workshops turn out the likes of exquisite leather gloves. Piazzas around every corner call for a Spritz stop; pizzas are made according to strict regulations (dough must be no more than 3mm thick). Between museums housing Caravaggios and a trio of castles, there’s people-watching on its lengthy seafront promenade, Lungomare. Soak it all up in mild-tempered April, before the blistering summer sets in.

Sustainable travel tip: Take the train to Naples and treat yourself to a bonus city break (or two) en route. Follow the Eurostar from London to Paris with the high-speed TGV to Milan (eight hours) or Turin (five hours 40 minutes), before venturing on to Naples (five or six hours).

Where to stay: PrimoPianoPosillipo , a funky four-bedroom B&B in a 19th-century palazzo.

Elephants in South Luangwa National Park

Temperature in April: 25°C high; 15°C low Season: dry Travel time from UK: 14 hours 30 minutes Time difference: GMT +2

Zambia isn’t nearly as popular as big game neighbours Botswana and Tanzania , due in part to terrible roads and pricey travel packages. If you’ve got the cash to splash, though, this African bush less travelled is a dream. Victoria Falls is its best-known attraction: locals call it 'Mosi-oa-Tunya', the smoke that thunders, as the falls themselves – the largest in the world by volume – are often obscured by spray. April, though, is the start of dry season, so the cascading water is more easily seen. Then onto South Luangwa National Park , with one of the highest densities of big game anywhere in Africa, and far fewer safari vehicles sharing the view. Mix it up with a few blissful days on a luxury houseboat on Lake Kariba, where you can spot the Big Five from the deck.

Sustainable travel tip: Elephant poaching is rife in Zambia: an astounding 95 per cent drop in the population has been reported in the country’s south-west. According to Responsible Travel , Kafue National Park is setting a better example with regular anti-poaching patrols courtesy of an independent Zambian NGO, Game Rangers International, resulting in more stable population numbers. Visiting the park helps fund this initiative.

Where to stay: At chilled, boutique hangout Latitude 15 Degrees in Lusaka.

17. Bali, Indonesia

Temperature in April: 31°C high; 23°C low Season: dry Travel time from UK: 15 hours 30 minutes Time difference: GMT +8

Bali at peak time? Are we mad? The key, see, is to come in early April. Before that terrifying Easter rush. Between the sad truths of dirty beaches and party-too-hard backpackers, Bali still has its charms. Laid-back Canggu , with its coffeeshops of MacBook-tapping freelancers, smacks of Tulum before it was Tulum: boho, beach-chic, but relaxed. Go for smoothies and veggie bowls at Shady Shack, and try to score an in-demand suite at tropical-brutalist boutique The Slow. Ubud, too, is still the Bali you want it to be in parts. A winning blend of spiritual and swank begins with ritualistic cleansing at Tirta Emou water temple, before undoing it all at elegant Locavore – on the list of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Sustainable travel tip: The tourism overload in Bali is well documented, and its attendant pollution most severely affects locals, who make little money from the boom (the lion’s share of that wealth goes to the government and foreign investors). JED is a tourism network owned by the communities of four local villages, offering trips that not only bring you up close to a more authentic Bali, but give back to the Balinese too.

Where to stay: COMO Shambhala Estate in Bali's rural hinterland is a grande dame spa. In Uluwatu, Bulgari Resort Bali has 59 villas, each with a plunge pool and gardens frothing with bougainville.

18. Charleston, USA

Temperature in April: 20°C high; 4°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 10 hours 45 minutes Time difference: GMT -5

Repeatedly hailed both the United States ’ greatest and friendliest city, the absence of a direct flight from the UK to charming Charleston has long been a frustration. But now that British Airways has stepped up, you can soar out of Heathrow and into this southern belle’s cobbled streets and horse-drawn carriages. And springtime is the perfect moment, before steamy summer envelops the Deep South. Try jazz-club-hopping in the French Quarter, slurp fresh oysters on the seafront, and don’t miss the colourful Georgians of Rainbow Row. Better still, April’s annual Festival of Houses and Gardens invites you inside some of the city’s most incredible homes. Go have a snoop.

Sustainable travel tip: Eating is one of the great pleasures of Southern culture, and Charleston’s restaurants are on a sustainable kick. Check out McCrady’s, which sources from local farmers and fishermen; Gnome Cafe, where vegan fare is paired with fair-trade coffee; and Five Loaves Cafe, which not only serves organic, Carolina-raised meat, but gives you compostable containers for taking home your leftovers.

Where to stay: At mid-century-modern Southern sensation The Dewberry .

19. Bolivia

Temperature in April: 17°C high; 4°C low Season: wet Travel time from UK: 20 hours Time difference: GMT -4

The end of rainy season in Bolivia , April marks a magical time on its famous salt flats. The weather makes 4x4 touring manageable again, but the bright-white plains remain partly submerged in water, turning them into a mirror. A rough-and-ready four-day tour is unforgettable, passing smoking volcanoes, a flamingo-flecked red lagoon, and deserts scattered with Dali-esque ‘rock trees’ on the way. After, scrub up in its newly chic capital, La Paz . Gustu, founded by Noma ’s Claus Meyer, serves riffs on local dishes (think: llama tartare). For a nightcap, try craft cocktails blended with native firewaters at design hotel Atix, a glass parallelogram with floor-to-ceiling views of surrounding Andean slopes.

Sustainable travel tip: Gustu isn’t just La Paz’s hottest restaurant: the kitchen is staffed by graduates of Meyer’s Melting Pot cooking schools, which mentor students in some of Bolivia’s most deprived areas. Eating here not only supports the regional food system, but creates better jobs for locals too.

Where to stay: Parador Santa Maria La Real in Sucre has arched ceilings, courtyards and a sweet roof terrace.

20. Texas, USA

Temperature in April: 27°C high; 15°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: from 10 hours 5 minutes Time difference: GMT -6

Spring is a lovely time of year in Texas . The weather is not yet too intensely hot (high 20s during the day), the skies are blue and clear, and things start to move outdoors – festivals, gigs, parties, eating and drinking. Austin 's SXSW influx of visitors have left (unless of course SXSW is what you seek, in which case come in March) but the city is still abuzz with live music and vibrant happenings. The weather in Marfa , out in the High Texan Desert, is just right for walking the many miles around Donald Judd's large-scale installations and land art out under the desert sun (at this time of year, not too harsh), and just right too for staying in a vintage van or airstream at El Cosmico.

Sustainable travel tip: Be aware that while Marfa has fast transformed from a forgotten desert outpost (pop 1,900) to an international hipster hangout, the town’s annual per capita income is less than £15,500, and 20 per cent of its population lives in poverty. So tip generously and often.

Where to stay: In Austin, consider the Park Lane Guest House , with its solar-powered cottages, bicycle rentals and breakfast sourced from the onsite organic garden.

21. Zermatt, Switzerland

Temperature in April: 16°C high; 4°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours Time difference: GMT +1

While things are hotting up down at the coast, up in the mountains it's still ice-cool. A spring ski break is a brilliant thing, especially for people who are more concerned with the après ski than the quality of the powder. But where to ski in April? Zermatt is one of the best ski resorts in April – it's high enough that there's still plenty of snow (it's got the highest ski lifts in Europe) and open all year round, plus a snowmaking machine to top up the levels on the glacier. It's quieter and cheaper than in high season (as long as you avoid the Easter holidays). No queues for the lifts or at the bar; and the sun on the terraces is properly warm for long, al fresco lunches. Start planning your trip with our what to pack for a ski trip guide.

Sustainable travel tip: Getting to Zermatt on the Glacier Express train is easily the most scenic route into the Swiss mountains. Panoramic windows showing off the country would be reason enough, but there are three-course meals and an extensive wine list to go with. First, though, you’ll need to catch a Eurostar to Paris, followed by a TGV to Lausanne (journey time: just short of four hours), then a Swiss InterRegional to Visp (35 minutes), and from Visp, the Glacier Express. Wait times between are negligible: see seat61.com for more.

Where to stay: Book Zermatt's oldest hotel, the Monte Rosa .

22. Namibia

Temperature in April: 26°C high; 13°C low Season: wet Travel time from UK: 10 hours Time difference: GMT +2

As the coast of Namibia has practically no rain and more than 300 days of sunshine a year, you'd be hard-pushed to not get decent weather. It is welcoming and politically stable, vast and largely uninhabited. And it's lovely in April – a moderate 24ºC by day. The Skeleton Coast is stunning and atmospheric; the Etosha National Game Park is packed with wildlife (four of the big five plus diverse birdlife), with lots of camps to stay at. Venture into the Namib Desert, to Sossusvlei, a salt pan surrounded by red sand dunes, best visited at dawn or dusk when the light is most dramatic.

Sustainable travel tip: Plan to stay in a communal conservancy, an area of protected land managed by the local community. While the communities partner with private enterprises – including big brands such as Under Canvas – to build visitor accommodation and offer game drives and the like, local involvement keeps these projects sustainable and provides the people who live there with an income. See a full list of Namibia’s communal conservancies here .

Where to stay: At smart savannah lodge Omaanda by Zannier , there are views across the plains all the way to the distant mountains from the traditional huts.

April and March are the best months to go to Cuba, weather-wise: when it's pretty dry, hot-but-not-too-hot (between 19ºC at night and 29ºC in the daytime) and days are long and sunny. Prices, meanwhile, aren't bad; the holiday traffic is long gone. Havana is heaven. But go to the beaches, too, for unspoilt Caribbean white sands and turquoise seas, with a Latin beat.

Sustainable travel tip: Very little private enterprise is permitted in communist Cuba, which leaves locals struggling to survive on tiny state salaries and rations. An exception to the rule: casas particulares (B&Bs) and paladares (in-home restaurants). Choosing to eat and sleep in these independent ventures not only helps Cubans, it gets you inside a proper Cuban home, up close to the ‘real Cuba’ that so many visitors come to see, but won’t find inside a resort.

Where to stay: Gardens Havana is the smartest guesthouse in the city, with four bedrooms and a palm-shaded courtyard.

24. Paris, France

Temperature in April: 14°C high; 5°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 1 hour 15 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

Who doesn't love Paris in the springtime? Or at any time of year, come to that – Paris is always a good idea, as Audrey Hepburn said. But go now, when the city is warming up and the trees around the Tuileries are in blossom. When we can join the young Parisians who come out blinking into the spring sunshine, shrugging off their good coats to bare a new-season Breton stripe, sit out beside the Canal Saint-Martin and smoke Gauloises, or stroll a long, golden-evening stroll along the Seine, hand in hand with someone else who loves Paris in the springtime. Here's our pick of best things to do in Paris, France , by day and the best things to do in Paris at night .

Sustainable travel tip: Take the Eurostar, of course, but don’t stop there: there’s little more romantic than cycling around Paris in the spring, and, like most major cities now, it has a handy bike-sharing scheme (you can’t miss the bright-green Vélib’ stations).

Where to stay: The hottest address in the city is Cheval Blanc Paris , which opened its doors in 2022 within the landmark La Samaritaine. For a room with a view, the mid-century style rooms at SO/ Paris have floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Seine, the Eiffel Tower and beyond. Or you could takeover a private bolthole – this apartment is one of the top trending properties on Airbnb.

Madeira

25. Madeira, Portugal

Temperature in April: 20°C high; 14°C low Season:  spring Travel time from UK:  3 hours 50 minutes Time difference: GMT

Portugal ’s barely-there sprinkling of an archipelago, 280 miles off the coast of Morocco , is subtropically clement all year round. In April, this fertile island bursts into bloom (the Flower Festival falls in April or May, depending on the year) and things start to warm up. Though temperatures are hardly balmy (average high is 20ºC), it’s ideal weather for outdoor pursuits in the diverse natural environment, walking in lush green forests to waterfalls, up volcanic peaks and along vertiginous cliff paths; while the surrounding waters are a riot of marine life in April, brimming with 20 species of whales and dolphins.

Sustainable travel tip: Whale-watching and swimming with dolphins is a highlight of a Madeira trip, but make sure you go with a responsible tourism company. Run by a couple of locals, including a marine biologist, venturadomar.com offers private sailing charters and marine-life experiences with a sustainability focus. Tour operator Responsible Travel can arrange holidays and activities in Madeira.

Where to stay: A pink vision on the craggy cliffs above the Atlantic Ocean, Reid’s Palace, a Belmond Hotel , is the premier address on Madeira. Nab a sparkly sea-facing room if you can; they come with balconies, so sounds of the sea are your wake up call.

April is a month of new beginnings (hello, budding blooms), revitalization (we missed your energy, sunshine), and awesome deals on vacations. Whether you're hoping to visit Europe , the Caribbean , or as far away as Indonesia, there are a ton of incredible places to visit in April.

Cherry blossoms in April at Heian Shrine, Kyoto, Japan

A bonus: April is considered the shoulder season in many tropical destinations , which means travelers can enjoy cheap hotel rates and comfortable temperatures before the influx of summer crowds and stifling summer heat set in.

For the winter warriors who are not ready to let go of the snowy season, places like Lake Tahoe still have skiing for end-of-the-season runs. Whether you want to tackle some hiking in the Rocky Mountains or witness the breathtaking cherry blossoms in peak bloom in Japan, April is a great time to travel.

Plan your trip with our list of the best places to travel in April.

1. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

2. moab, utah, 3. london, england, 4. venice, italy, 5. yangzhou, china, 6. amsterdam, netherlands, 7. lake tahoe, california, 8. kyoto, japan, 9. cayman islands, 10. newport beach, california, 11. sydney, australia, 12. bali, indonesia, 13. denver, colorado, 14. washington d.c., 15. athens, greece, 16. agra, india.

Puerto Vallarta

The month of April is an ideal window to visit Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, when the weather is comfortable, and rates for hotel rooms are more affordable . This month rests between the high season in the winter and the rush of summer tourists, when hotel and airfare rates skyrocket.

Temperatures are pleasant and rain is almost non-existent in April, meaning more days for enjoying the beautiful beaches and better opportunities to stroll the street markets to find souvenirs or taste some culinary dishes beachside. There is no shortage of things to do in Puerto Vallarta .

You will enjoy your time exploring the historic sites, like the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe during the day and walking along the Boardwalk Malecon to soak in the views of the ocean in the evenings, where you can catch a free dance performance at the amphitheater.

Arches National Park

If a visit to the red rock canyons of Moab, Utah is on your bucket list, then planning a trip in April is a great time of year to do it.

Early spring is a perfect time for hiking in Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park , when the weather is cooler and the summer tourists are still a few months away. The climate is perfect for outdoor activities like mountain biking or taking the three-mile trek to capture the iconic image of the Delicate Arch and see this national treasure up close.

Many people travel to Moab for the incredible hiking and unforgettable canyon views but there are so many other things to do in Moab , from biking and horseback riding to taking a four-wheeler trek through the national parks. April is also a good month for camping around Moab .

You will want to plan ahead when making reservations and add enough days to your stay to get in everything that you want to do, especially if you plan to do a lot of hiking.

Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament

London is almost always a hot spot for tourists year-round, but April will enable you to enjoy the sights before the summer rush kicks in for domestic and international vacationers. Some attractions require booking tickets for specific days and time slots or may not be open certain days of the week, so you will want to plan ahead if there are specific places on your must-see list.

Another upside to visiting in April is that the weather is more comfortable, especially for walking around the streets of London.

Accommodations in central London stay at a premium most of the year, but you can likely find a break on lodging by staying just outside the city and taking the train.

Kew Gardens is unmissable at this time of year, and you'll want to carve out some time to wander through other London parks and gardens , like Hyde , Regent , and Richmond Parks , when flowers are coming into bloom.

April is a great time to take advantage of the best scenery, from the top London attractions like the Tower of London and the beauty surrounding Buckingham Palace and Kensington Gardens .

Gondola in Venice

April is a great month to visit the historic Italian city of Venice. The weather is comfortable, with spring temperatures starting to emerge and less humidity than in the summer months. You'll be able to enjoy dining on your homemade pasta al fresco, as long as you pack a sweater, that is.

As for tourists, the boom does not start for several months, so you will still have plenty of elbow room to enjoy local attractions and gondola rides along the Grand Canal. Take advantage of fewer crowds as you explore St. Mark's Square and St. Mark's Basilica .

April is a beautiful time to see Venice, and hotel rates are still at a lower level than in the busy summer tourist season.

The Lotus Bridge in Yangzhou

Yangzhou is one of the best places to travel in April. The reason is made clear as soon as you catch sight of its stunning flowers and rare and ancient bonsai trees. During April, everything in Yangzhou blossoms into an Instagram-worthy glory.

One of the best places to visit in China , Yangzhou lies in the Jiangsu Province , which borders the Yangtze River . The city is known for its gardens, like the Ge Garden and the elaborate floral displays on offer at Slender West Lake . There are also more than 200, centuries-old miniature private gardens located throughout the ancient city.

Beyond the colorful variety of flowers throughout the city and in the public gardens, Yangzhou is known for its history of producing scholars, poets, artists, and famous geishas. You can find outdoor evening performances among the gardens at Slender West Lake and enjoy a cultural experience detailing the city's history through music, dance, and poetry.

Tulips along a canal in Amsterdam

By April, winter's icy chill has left Amsterdam, making it a more enjoyable time to wander around the Dutch city's iconic canals and interesting neighborhoods. While you may run into a spot of rain, Amsterdam's impressive museums, like the Ann Frank House , Van Gogh Museum , and Rijksmuseum , are the perfect places to take cover.

Temperatures hover in the high 50s Fahrenheit but can jump, so layers are your best bet. Aim to be here for King's Day on April 27 th if you want to see the city decked out in all its orange glory. Decorated boats pack the canals, live music is pumped through the streets, a city-wide market opens, and plenty of delicious treats are on offer.

Wander through colorful Jordaan , enjoying its unique markets, boutique shopping, and tasty restaurants before boarding a boat cruise. The NEMO Science Museum is especially worthy of a visit, if only to gaze at the creative contemporary design.

Lake Tahoe

If you have a hard time letting go of winter and want to push your skiing opportunities out as long as possible, an April trip to Lake Tahoe is in order. This recreational area in the Sierra Nevada Mountains sits on the state line between California and Nevada , where the snowcapped mountains enable skiing to last later than most ski resorts in the United States .

The hard-core snow bunnies can take advantage of the cool daytime temperatures to log a few more runs on the slopes. The other advantages of visiting Lake Tahoe in April are the smaller crowds and lower prices as the ski season comes to an end. You may also find cheaper prices at luxury resorts around Lake Tahoe.

There are many Lake Tahoe ski areas and resorts to choose from, and a few have even remained open until June in some years.

Japanese woman under the cherry blossoms in Kyoto

The top reason to travel to Kyoto, Japan in April can be summed up in two words: cherry blossoms . Kyoto cherry blossoms begin in mid to late March and peak in April, when the blooms are spectacular and the city fills with an unforgettable fragrance.

Much attention is paid to forecasting peak viewing times each year, so locals and visitors can have the best experience with the cherry blossoms accenting the ancient architecture, tea houses, pagodas, and gardens.

Given the beauty of Kyoto at this time of year, it is no surprise that it is a popular time for tourists, so you will want to book hotel rooms at least four to six months in advance. Prepare yourself for a hefty bill — this is definitely not one of the cheapest places to visit in April .

Kyoto is also the hub of Japanese culture. While here, make your way to visit the famous Ryoanji Temple rock garden, antiques stores in Gion , and peruse the 100 vendor stalls at the Nishiki Market .

Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

While the Cayman Islands are a popular winter destination for people who want to get away from cold weather, April is an ideal month for those who want to visit and avoid the crowds of snowbirds or incoming summer vacationers.

April sits on the shoulder season, with lots of benefits, including better deals on resorts, more availability on tours and excursions, and fewer people in general.

Temperatures do not change much throughout the year in the Cayman Islands, hovering around the 80s during the day, but the April bonus means that you can visit on the tail end of the dry season and have fewer rain showers overall.

Great weather means more time for the beach and some of the top tourist attractions , like Stingray City and the Cayman Turtle Centre. If you plan to stay on Grand Cayman, be sure to book a boat trip to visit Little Cayman and Cayman Brac during your visit.

Newport Beach Pier at sunset

The area of Newport Beach, California is beautiful anytime of the year, but if you want to catch the gray whale migration , April is an ideal time to visit.

With so many dolphin and whale excursions available from Newport Landing, it is best to visit this area in the spring for the optimal viewing opportunities and before the summer crowds arrive.

There are many beaches to enjoy and boutique shops in the town. You can also enjoy the Balboa Fun Zone , which opened in 1936 and still has the wholesome, old-fashioned amusement park thrills, like a Ferris wheel and midway games.

Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge at dusk

Sydney in April is nice because it is the fall season, which means cooler temperatures and fading summer crowds. You can also take advantage of declining hotel rates and airfares during this short fall window.

Since there are fewer tourists flocking to the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour , you will have more time (and space) to enjoy some of the most popular Sydney attractions . You will also have more room to enjoy Hyde Park , an inner city park, and the Royal Botanic Garden .

Even though temperatures are cooling off heading into the Australian winter, you can still enjoy comfortable weather at Sydney's famous beaches like Manly Beach , Bondi Beach , and Coogee Beach .

Rice fields in Bali

The tropical paradise of Bali is one of the most spectacular places to visit in Indonesia , and April is one of the best times to go. April marks the start of Bali's dry season , which usually lasts through October, so it is a great time to experience the beaches and all the other things to do around the island.

The beautiful weather in April will also make it easy to visit some of Bali's temples, like the Uluwatu Temple and Tanah Lot Temple .

Nusa Dua will be bustling by April, and it is where you will find many high-end hotels and resorts. You can book one of the luxury water villas to relax in, so you do not even have to walk to the beach.

Be advised that since April begins a popular time for tourists heading to Bali, you will be paying a premium for accommodations and airfare and you will want to book far in advance.

Head to Ubud if you want a quieter rainforest retreat. While you're there, be sure to check out the spectacular Ubud Monkey Forest , but keep all food and water well hidden, as the clever little monkeys can open backpacks.

Downtown Denver

April is one of the best months of the year to visit Denver because the shoulder season has mild temperatures, and the rush of tourists do not arrive until after May. The outdoor scene in the city starts to come alive in April with bustling activity along the 16 th Street Mall and Larimer Square .

Just outside of downtown, you can rejuvenate with a drive along the Mount Evans Scenic Byway or an outdoor concert at the unforgettable Red Rocks Amphitheatre .

Cherry blossoms and the Jefferson Memorial in Washington D.C.

If you are lucky enough to visit the United States capital of Washington D.C. in April, you may catch a glimpse of the cherry blossoms in bloom along the Potomac River and enjoy the annual parade that accompanies this springtime celebration. Washington's parks are beautiful this time of year.

Temperatures can be cool, but comfortable for walking around the grounds of the U.S. Capitol Buildings and along the Smithsonian Mall and museums.

Since so many of the museums and monuments are free in Washington D.C., you can get away with an affordable vacation this time of year . Due to D.C.'s popularity, you can also find hotel and airfare deals that will keep your costs down.

There are many tours available to the White House and other attractions , but sometimes Washington D.C. is best explored on your own at a leisurely pace.

The Parthenon

There's hardly a bad time to visit Athens, Greece, but there are a few reasons why April is a great month to go. Topping the list is the fact that the peak tourist season doesn't hit until summer, when visiting the Acropolis and Ancient Agora are almost too crowded to enjoy. An April Greece vacation will mean fewer tourists and more availability on popular tours.

The spring temperatures in April are another reason to visit, when cool evenings and mild days make touring outside comfortable. Take a jacket for dinners on the coast where it can be breezy.

You will also find decent deals on hotels and airfare to Athens in April before the summer push for reservations.

Taj Mahal, Agra, India

Do yourself a favor and add Agra to your list of places to travel in April. While the days are hot (you can expect temps in the mid to high 90s) and humid, April offers visitors a ton of bright sunshine, cheap prices , little to no rain, and few tourists.

You can't visit Agra without a trip to the iconic Taj Mahal , the city's most famous landmark. While you're here, carve out some extra time to explore the nearby Agra Fort , Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah , and the captivating Mehtab Bagh park.

Be sure you have enough water when wandering around this remarkable city in Uttar Pradesh, and stop in at the numerous restaurants to enjoy a cool respite from the sometimes oppressive heat.

May's temperatures skyrocket, making it an almost unbearable time to visit. April is technically the beginning of India's summer, which means it only gets hotter through July. Monsoon season begins then and runs through September, so it's best to avoid the area at that time.

  • Spring Travel

A little April getaway serves as a wonderful reward for making it through winter. TravelAwaits writers have been all over God’s green earth at all times of the year, so when considering warm destinations to travel to in April, we turned to them for advice. Here are their top picks.

Sugar white sand and stunning blue water on Rendezvous Bay in Anguilla, BWI

1. Anguilla, British West Indies

“ Anguilla is paradise on earth. The resorts are incredible, offering views of the azure blue water and sugar-white sand. There are several beaches to explore, including ones you can only get to by boat.

“The ocean temperature in the Caribbean Sea hovers around eighty degrees, and the water is so clear, with visibility of up to 100 feet. This is perfect for swimming, paddle boarding, and snorkeling, or just taking in the breathtaking views from a lounge chair.

Anguilla is also the foodie capital of the Caribbean with fabulous restaurants from beach shacks to five-star establishments, all serving the freshest seafood and local specialties. It’s the perfect place to restore and relax, especially at this time of the year.” — Jeanine Consoli

boats docked in Antigua

2. Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda

“If you are looking to enjoy some warm Caribbean weather in April, Antigua — half of the twin islands of Antigua and Barbuda — is hard to beat.

“Temperatures on the island average around 84 degrees in April, and April has the second lowest amount of rainfall (after January). It’s also the tail end of peak season, meaning the crowds begin to thin out.

“Antigua boasts 365 beaches — one for every day of the year. Ask a resident, and they’ll tell you that in a leap year, you can probably find that 366th beach!

“Plenty of boating activities take place in Antigua during the month of April. They include the Oyster Antigua Regatta (April 5–8) and the Peters & May Round Antigua Race (April 29). Antigua Sailing Week runs from April 28 through May 5.

“Landlubbers will enjoy the Antigua and Barbuda International Kite Festival (April 10), and Antigua and Barbuda Art Week (April 16–22).” — Stan Thomas

pink telephone box near water in Bermuda

“Contrary to some belief, Bermuda is not in the Caribbean. It’s actually a tiny island in the Atlantic, off of North Carolina. The weather is glorious, but not really before April. I was last there in January, and it was a tad chilly. But in the spring months, Bermuda becomes the perfect spot for a 4-day getaway.

“Flying there from the East Coast is an absolute breeze. In under 2 hours, you’re on the pink sand beaches that lead to the clear turquoise sea.

“Bermuda’s food scene is amazing; unsurprisingly, the seafood and fish are outstanding — some of the best I’ve ever had. There’s also excellent golfing, shopping, and fascinating, lesser-known history, all of which add up to a perfect April escape.” — Karen Burshtein

4. Dubai, United Arab Emirates

“If you’re thinking of visiting Dubai, April is a great time to go. It’s the city’s transitional month, when the mild days of winter are replaced by long, hot, sunny days. You won’t face the blistering heat of summer, but you will get 10 hours of sunshine a day — perfect for exploring the city.

“Some of the best things to do in Dubai in April include

  • a visit to the Burj Khalifa (the world’s tallest building)
  • taking a dhow cruise (for a unique perspective of the city skyline)
  • visiting the Dubai Aquarium (home to more than 30,000 marine animals)
  • joining an early-morning or evening desert safari
  • attending the Dubai Food Festival

“Visiting the iconic Palm Jumeirah man-made island should also be on your to-do list. Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort is found here and is a great place to stay.

“Note that April can coincide with the Holy Month of Ramadan, which may result in limited opening hours for some shops and attractions.” — Sarah Kingdom

native of French Polynesia playing ukulele on rock at beach

5. Tahiti And The Tuamotu Islands, French Polynesia

“A Tahiti and Tuamotu Islands small-ship cruise with Windstar Cruises is the perfect April getaway. I cruised aboard the Wind Spirit , a romantic sailing yacht, last April and have never experienced better swimming or snorkeling anywhere in the world. You’ll embark in Tahiti and your ship will stop at remarkable islands like Bora Bora, Motu Mahaea, Moorea, Riaiatea, and Huahine in the Society Islands, and the ultra-remote Tuamotu islands of Rangiroa and Fakarava. You can even choose to stay in one of the over-water bungalows during the cruise.

“When it comes to hotels, consider the fabulous Pearl Resorts in Tahiti and Raiatea and the ultra-luxurious Vahine Island Resort , a boutique Small Luxury Hotels private island resort near Taha’a.

“Between your resort stays and a Windstar Cruise, French Polynesia in April promises fine dining, comfortable accommodations, and outstanding excursions in and on the pristine turquoise waters. Bonus: Flying direct from San Francisco or Los Angeles to Papeete, Tahiti, is simple and straightforward. I slept almost the entire flight!” — Judi Cohen

over water bungalows on the beach at Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas

6. The Maldives

“Lying in the Indian Ocean, to the southwest of India and Sri Lanka, the Maldives is a wonderful, warm, April destination. With a tropical monsoon climate, temperatures are pretty high all year round here, but April tends to be calm, with plenty of sunshine — perfect for enjoying beach activities during the day and cool enough to spend balmy evenings out under the stars. This is the end of the Maldives’ official dry season, so the occasional tropical rain shower is possible.

“With calm tides, clear skies, and great water visibility, April is the perfect time for fantastic snorkeling and diving experiences , and the reefs are at their best at this time of year. As a bonus, whale sharks are year-round residents in the Maldives, and seeing them is definitely something to add to your bucket list.

“Boasting breathtaking beaches and a plethora of water adventures, Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas is my favorite place in the Maldives. Surrounded by a turquoise lagoon and white sand beaches, this is a gorgeous place to be.” — Sarah Kingdom

A rainbow over Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe

7. Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

“Summer starts winding down in Africa in April, and the continent pauses before winter, so it’s not quite summer, not yet winter, and travelers get to experience that magical moment in between. It’s a quieter time, perfect for visitors who want to avoid peak-season crowds and prices but still enjoy warm temperatures.

“On the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, the Zambezi River , Africa’s fourth largest river, is at its powerful peak in April, fully charged with 5 months of summer rain and pouring thunderously over the world-famous Victoria Falls. As the water surges over the mile-wide precipice, rumbling and tumbling 360 feet down into the gorge below, vast clouds of mist rise into the air — and can be seen from 30 miles away.

“If this is one of your bucket-list destinations, April is the time to see it, especially from above. Take the helicopter ride aptly named the Flight of Angels . At full moon, an ethereal lunar rainbow, a phenomenon only seen in a few places around the world, is visible in the gorge.

528 Victoria Falls Guest House is a great accommodation option. For activities, dining, and accommodation suggestions, check out Africa’s Eden’s Victoria Falls page .” — Sarah Kingdom

The pace at which property sales are agreed in the coming weeks is likely to slow because of the general election, a property expert has said.

Richard Donnell, executive director at Zoopla, said buyers who are close to agreeing a sale will "ideally want to push through and agree to sales now".

However, those who are "earlier in the process" may try to "delay decisions until the autumn after the election is over", Mr Donnell said.

This election may not have as much impact as previous ones, though.

That is because there is "not a huge divide in policy between the two main parties", Mr Donnell said.

He also said there were "few specifics on housing other than a focus on reforming the private rental sector and boosting housing supply".

Nevertheless, sales during the whole of 2024 may now fall slightly short of the "1.1m we expected for 2024", he said.

Regarding what those in the sector want to happen, he added: "What businesses and landlords will want to see from all political parties are concrete plans for how we can boost housing supply across all tenures while getting the right reforms to the private rented sector to ensure we maintain supply while giving renters more protections."

Severn Trent water company has hiked its dividend to shareholders after profits rose by a fifth last year, despite sewage spills by the company rising by a third in 2023.

Severn Trent, which provides water to much of Wales and the west of England, lifted its final dividend by 9% to 70.1p per share.

Meanwhile, its profit rose to £201.3m.

This comes after the company asked to increase bills by 35.7% over the next five years, and after it was responsible for more than 60,000 sewage spills last year.

BT has been fined £2.8m by the industry watchdog after EE and Plusnet - both of which it owns - failed to provide clear and simple contract information to more than a million customers before they signed up.

Ofcom said the businesses had made more than 1.3 million sales since June 2022 without providing customers with a contract summary and information documents.

It said this broke the regulator's consumer protection rules, and that the fine "reflects the seriousness of this breach".

Contactless card fraud has more than doubled after the payment limit was increased to £100 three years ago, according to new figures.

Some £41.5m was lost to contactless card fraud last year, up from £34.9m in 2022 and £19.1m in 2021, a report from UK Finance shows.

The limit for contactless payments rose to £100 in October 2021, up from £45.

Fraud experts say this has made bank cards a bigger target for criminal gangs.

An election has been called, and the main parties now have six weeks to make their pitch to voters.

Central to their manifestos will be what they will do with your money - their plans for taxes, pensions, childcare and so on.

So what have the Conservatives and Labour said so far on money matters, what has been reported in the media and what could change with a new government?

Triple lock and pension age

This is a key issue for many voters, particularly older ones - traditionally more likely to vote Tory.

Tom Selby, director of public policy at AJ Bell, says the pension triple-lock is one of the few things both parties have been "crystal clear on".

Both Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer have committed to the policy for the next five years. Reminder - the lock guarantees the state pension rises by the highest of average earnings growth, inflation or 2.5%.

Another key issue is retirement age: Mr Selby says that although neither party is likely to talk about it on the campaign trail, there's a chance pension age increases will come into focus for the next government.

"The current state pension age is 66, with plans in place to raise this to 67 by 2028 and 68 by 2046," he says. "However, there have been calls from various quarters to accelerate that timetable in order to save the Treasury money."

Lifetime allowance

According to reports, Labour would consider plans to reintroduce the lifetime allowance - the limit on pension pots someone can build up over their lifetime without a tax penalty. It was abolished in April this year.

We'll see if this is actually something they commit to in the coming weeks, however.

Automatic refunds for train delays

Labour has pledged to renationalise rail services within five years. Automatic refunds for train delays and better internet connection on trains are also planned.

VAT on private school fees?

This idea has been mooted by Labour several times in recent years.

Keir Starmer said it was not an "attack on private schools" but a way to get more funding for state schools. He suggested that schools could absorb the cost increase rather than passing it on to parents in fees.

Lost pensions

Tackling the issue of "lost" pension posts will probably be a "big focus" for the next government, Mr Selby, from AJ Bell, says.

An estimated £27bn of pensions money is sitting in accounts that have become disconnected from their owner.

"Proposed pensions dashboards should help make it easier for Brits to find lost pensions. The reforms, due to be introduced in 2026, will allow people to see all of their retirement pots in one place, online," he says.

At the last budget in March, Jeremy Hunt announced the creation of a British ISA - which would allow savers to invest £5,000 a year tax-free in the UK stock market.

It has since been delayed pending a consultation.

Labour has said it will look to simplify ISAs, something Mr Selby welcomes: "No sensible person designing a savings system from scratch would propose the plethora of different ISAs we have on offer today."

However, Labour has offered much detail for its simplification plan.

Tax is a key battleground in any election.

It's a divisive issue, as Laura Suter, personal finance director at AJ Bell, concedes: "For some, taxes need to rise in order to fund already-stretched public services. For others, ever-increasing tax bills are evidence that public spending is out of control and taxes need to be cut to incentivise growth."

The Tories are likely to tout cuts to National Insurance as proof of their commitment to cut taxes, she says - we have already seen two 2p cuts in the last year.

Labour will argue, though, that their rivals have increased taxes by stealth by freezing tax thresholds - and can point to record high tax burdens facing Britons.

"In truth," Ms Suter says, "there is very little wiggle room in either direction. Taxpayers will struggle to stomach further tax increases, while tax cuts will eat into the future chancellor's budgets, which is crucial to any spending commitments either party plan on."

Housing and first-time buyers

This is another big concern for voters, with the potential to divide young and old.

"First-time buyers will want to see an extension to support helping them get a foot on the ladder," Ms Suter says, "while existing homeowners will hope for policies that moderate inflation and increase the likelihood of interest rate cuts."

She highlights an issue for aspiring homeowners with the Lifetime ISA.

The property limit, she says, is "frozen in time" at £450,000 since the ISAs were launched seven years ago. Since then, average house prices in the UK have gone up from £219,000 to £283,000. If the limit had increased with house prices it would be £580,500 today, she says.

"Many aspiring homebuyers will have signed up to the accounts years ago, not realising that it would take so long to get on the property ladder and that they might fall foul of the property limit in the future," she says.

"What makes the situation more galling for first-time buyers who have been priced out of using the Lifetime ISA is that they now face losing some of their own money when they withdraw their cash from the accounts, thanks to the onerous withdrawal penalty. Anyone who exceeds the £450,000 limit, even by just £1, will be hit with the 25% exit charge on the Lifetime ISA, as their purchase will no longer be within the rules."

The Tories announced an expansion of free childcare to all children under five in England last year.

Shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson had refused to commit to the £4bn expanded scheme, but Labour has since said it would keep it in place.

Ms Suter calls the policy a "helpful boost" to parents' finances, saving them almost £3,500 a year on nursery fees depending on location, but cautions: "It's essential that the next government keeps a close eye on the rollout and ensures that any wrinkles in the system are ironed out quickly."

There's a case for going further, she says, and reforming the entire system, "which provides a hotchpotch of different subsidies for parents that frustrates families, leaves nursery finance departments scratching their heads, and creates an extra admin burden for the tax office."

"The economy, stupid."

The phrase was coined by James Carville, a strategist of Bill Clinton in 1992, as a US recession helped unseat George W Bush.

The phrase emphasises the link between the fortunes of a country's economy and election results, and seems apposite today as Rishi Sunak called a 4 July poll after inflation returned to 2.3% - or "normal levels", as he called it.

Ed Conway , our economics editor, has been on air giving his thoughts about whether focusing on the economy is a good strategy for the PM...

He said: "The economy was driven through that speech from the prime minister.

"We're out of recession. That's one of the key things they were waiting for. Inflation is now down to a normal level.

"Those things have been ticked off [but] there's a couple of issues.

"First of all, it doesn't look like, with inflation not falling quite as far as everyone would have expected, that the final thing they were hoping for, the Bank of England cutting interest rates, is going to happen in June. There probably is not going to be an interest rate cut before the election. That's quite significant.

"Secondly, when people look at this election, it's that old question: do you feel better off than you did four or five years ago?

"And in this case, there is no parliamentary period in history where people have seen their real disposable incomes squeezed as much as this one.

"That's what the prime minister's fighting against. He will say that was down to the pandemic. It was down to what's happening in Ukraine at the moment.

"But for a lot of people, they are still finding it quite painful, even though inflation is back to normal levels. That's the legacy of the last few years that people are feeling in their pockets."

Nearly a third of shoppers believe the quality of food and drink in supermarkets has decreased in the last two years, according to a survey.

Some 33% of those questioned by Which? said they had noticed a change in quality, with 94% of this group saying it had got worse.

The survey found most complaints were about fruit and vegetables, although shoppers also reported a decline in quality in supermarket own-brand food, chilled and frozen ready meals, branded food, and fresh meat and fish.

The consumer site said one of the factors could be that customers have higher expectations due to prices increasing sharply.

But other factors could also include a series of poor harvests for fruit and vegetables due to adverse weather conditions and climate change.

Plus, many supermarkets have removed best-before dates from most fruit and vegetables in a move to reduce food waste.

This could mean some fresh items might be sitting on supermarket shelves for longer, or items could be spoiling sooner once they're bought than they had previously.

More survey respondents reported declines in food quality at Tesco (43%) and Sainsbury's (42%).

This was followed by Morrisons (17%), Aldi (16%), Asda (16%), Waitrose (14%), Lidl (11%) and M&S (10%).

However, Which? said this order broadly reflects retailer market share so could just be down to where people shop most frequently.

The Money team has contacted the supermarkets for comment.

Research by Compare the Market suggests 69% of home movers are surprised by some of the costs involved.

The comparison site calculated what it describes as "hidden costs" - and came out with an average sum of £5,837.

People moving home reported legal fees being larger than expected, as well as the surprisingly high cost of hiring a removal van or paying for short-term storage, according to Compare the Market.

Others said they were surprised by the high cost of mortgage arrangement fees and their homebuyer survey.

Here's the data...

Every Wednesday we get Michelin chefs to pick their favourite Cheap Eats where they live and when they cook at home. This week we speak to Stephen Toman, chef owner at the one Michelin starred Ox restaurant in Belfast.

Hi Stephen , c an you tell us your favourite places in Northern Ireland  where you can get a meal for two for less than £40?

Rarely do I get out with being in the restaurant so much but when I get a chance I like to go somewhere casual.

There's a great little pub not too far from me that does great pub grub and an even better Guinness. It's called Robert Stewart's , or Bob Stewart's to the locals. I recommend the peppered steak and a pint of the black stuff to wash it down.

For in the city centre I recommend Ora . The perfect spot for small plates and wines by the glass. Super cocktails also. The bang bang chicken or the pork fritters never fail.

What's your go-to cheap meal at home?

Cooking at home, I try to keep it simple. I enjoy making Mexican with my daughter, she is crazy about fish tacos. We normally just serve it with guacamole, salsa, spiced rice and coriander mayo.

Other than that it has to be a Sunday roast, even on a Tuesday. My favourite is a good quality ham, glazed with maple, orange and clove, served with fondant potatoes and spring greens. Use a little bit of the ham stock to deglaze the roasting tray, and thicken with a few knobs of butter for the sauce.

We've spoken to top chefs around the UK - check out their Cheap Eats here...

Inflation came in at 2.3% in April - but this is a round up of various sectors, some of which saw prices rise or fall at vastly different rates.

A cut to Ofgem's energy price cap and the associated cheaper bills were a leading driver of April's inflation rate fall.

Prices of electricity, gas and other fuels fell by 27.1% in the year to April 2024, the largest fall on record, according to the Office for National Statistics.

While they didn't fall, food and drink price rises slowed for the 13th month in a row to 2.9% in April, from 4% in March. This is the lowest level since November 2021.

However, services inflation, a critical indicator for Bank of England policymakers, dipped slightly from 6% in March to 5.9% in April, coming in ahead of the 5.4% rate that some economists had been predicting.

This was driven by more volatile aspects of the sector, such as hotels and live music.

As we've been discussing, today's inflation data could set back interest rate cuts - with the Bank of England having stated it needs evidence inflation can hit and stay at the 2% target before it acts.

Headline inflation is now within touching distance of the target - but 2.3% wasn't as low as expected and core inflation, which strips out the volatile elements, is still at 3.9%.

Paul Dales, chief UK economist at Capital Economics, said the smaller-than-expected fall in inflation makes a June rate cut "unlikely" and "casts some doubt over August too".

Capital Economics had forecasted that rates would fall from 5.25% now to 3% next year, but Mr Dales says this now looks "more challenging".

He said today's data would have been a "blow" for the Bank of England and Rishi Sunak, despite inflation being closer to the 2% target than it has been for three years.

He pointed out that restaurant and hotel inflation rose from 5.8% to 6%, while cultural services inflation (including concerts and cinemas) rose from 5.4% to 8.3%.

"Even though there is still a wages and a CPI release to go before the Bank of England meeting on 20 June, it feels as though a cut then now seems very unlikely," Mr Dales said.

"Our forecast is that lower energy prices and a faster fading of persistence (due to the previous weakness of the economy) will mean inflation falls below 2% in the coming months and perhaps even close to 1% later this year."

"If so, the BoE may eventually end up cutting interest rates from 5.25% now to 3.00% next year."

However, he said he was "more worried" about that forecast now and it might not happen as soon.

As billed by our City editor Mark Kleinman yesterday , the used car business has gone into administration - just three years after listing in New York at a valuation of $8bn.

Cazoo had warned earlier this month it might need to file for administration, and has now appointed restructuring advisers at Teneo to handle the insolvency.

The business was launched in 2018 as an online retailer and supplier of used cars.

More recently it had become an advertising marketplace similar to Auto Trader, prompting 728 job cuts.

It now has about 200 employees.

The business, which invested aggressively in marketing, had struggled to turn a profit and had made losses before tax of £525.5m in 2022.

Teneo said almost 100 car dealers had expressed an interest in trading on its marketing platform and that administrators hoped to conclude a sale in the coming weeks.
