Ghost of tsushima player encounters terrifying bug, fallout: 10 best characters who were born before the war.

Horizon Zero Dawn has a vast world to explore across multiple biomes and all different kinds of terrain. Because of this, players may need to find the best way for Aloy to make it from point A to point B in any given situation. The most common way to make traveling easier in Horizon Zero Dawn   is to get some sort of mount.

RELATED:  Horizon Zero Dawn: Coolest Machines, Ranked

There are only three types of mounts in this game, all of which are machines that will need to be overridden. While these machines are all similar in nature, they each have something that makes them unique enough to weigh which ones are better.

How To Override A Specific Mount

Aloy can gain the ability to override machines by doing the main quests through " The Womb of the Mountain ." At the end of this quest, players will receive the first level of Overrides known as the PSI Overrides. Luckily, this is all that is needed to hijack the mounts in the game.

To pull it off, players must first be in the range of one of these mountable machines . However, players must avoid getting seen, so it's best to hide in a nearby bush. From there, use the whistle to catch the machine's attention. It will slowly begin to walk towards the bushes. Once it gets close enough, players will be prompted to override it.

This timing is crucial as doing it too late will cause the machine to notice the player and get aggressive. If done successfully, players will be able to have Aloy ride the mount around until either the mount dies or the player grabs a new machine to ride. These devices can also be used as an ally in combat , whether they are being ridden or not.

Aloy is introduced to Striders very early on in her life, so it makes sense that these are the most common of the three mountable creatures. Striders are very common throughout the open world but are most common in Meridian.

RELATED:  Action RPGs To Play If You Like Horizon Zero Dawn

These machines are often afraid of humans, with most of the pack running away when a human shows up. The horse-like robots are very helpful early on when bouncing around from quest to quest as the machine has a good enough speed to make reaching each checkpoint feel like a breeze.

2 Broadheads

The next two machines are more likely to be very aggressive towards the player if caught, making taming them more difficult . The Broadhead's primary attack is to charge them then slash them with their big horns. The cow-like creature will travel at the same speed as the Strider. However, the Broadhead can be used rather nicely in combat .

When mounted on the machine, Aloy can get the Broadhead to charge at other machines and deal at least 35 points of damage, with impact pushing it to 150. The Broadheads are also rather common, but the desert is a common area for these machines.

While Broadheads and Chargers are a similar threat when attempting to approach them, the latter are likely to deal more damage. While their charge isn't as powerful, their kicks are so deadly that they deal up to 225 hit points of damage to Aloy or other machines .

When hijacked, the ram-like robot also travels at the same speed as the other two, but combat while riding it is a lot more effective. That is because the charge while riding it causes nearly twice the amount of damage compared to riding a Broadhead. Chargers are also common in many locations but mostly found in forests.

Horizon: Every Mount In The Series, Ranked

Here's every mount in Horizon: Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, ranked.

Most of the time, machines in Horizon Forbidden West are a nuisance, but they definitely have their advantages. Not only can you override a number of machines if you complete their respective cauldrons, but you can also mount a few. There are three machines you can mount in Horizon Zero Dawn and four in its sequel.

Related: Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Guide

In this post-apocalyptic version of the United States, you can travel via Charger, Strider, Broadhead, Bristleback, Clawstrider, or Sunwing. And although all options are great, some are better than others. There are numerous factors to consider when deciding which mount is best. Speed, combat, and strength are all important. One machine may be great for combat, but incredibly slow, while others are best for travel but offer no defensive traits.

Striders are the original Horizon mount. You’ll come across these horse-like machines early in the game in Zero Dawn. Just like horses, Striders are fast and agile, making them a great way to traverse the world.

But unfortunately, just like horses, the Striders are timid creatures. It can be difficult to sneak up on one if you choose to override it. And while other machines may get aggressive as soon as they spot you, Striders are more likely to run away. So though getting caught won’t result in you potentially dying, it does hinder your chances of successfully mounting one of the machines. They're also incredibly basic and pale in comparison to the other mounts.

This machine type appears in both games and is the first machine you can mount in Forbidden West. Its horns resemble a ram, but the rest of its body is more similar to a bull. Chargers aren’t any faster than Striders or Broadheads, and they’re relatively weak when it comes to taking damage.

However, their kicks and charges can inflict a lot of damage, so while it may not be a great idea to take one into combat, at least you know it’ll offer you some level of defense. But combat is still exponentially easier when you're using the weapons in your arsenal . Nonetheless, they’re still an apt method of transportation.

4 Broadheads

These ox-like machines are large and commonly found in Zero Dawn. They’re a lot like cattle, meaning that though they’ll defend themselves, they aren’t necessarily patrolling areas for potential enemies like Burrowers and Watchers.

Related: Things To Do After You Beat Horizon Forbidden West

Though they’re tough and can provide some protection, Broadheads are heavy machines, and their size often makes traveling with them more of a challenge than an advantage. It’s not so easy to turn them around or get them through narrow paths. This is why you probably don’t want to be riding one when you come across enemies, especially big machines , on the road and need to find an escape route off the beaten path. Trying to get away can get you stuck, making you easier prey.

3 Clawstriders

The Clawstriders are one of the handfuls of machine types that resemble dinosaurs—in this case, a velociraptor. Facing off against Clawstriders can be a difficult endeavor. They’re tough machines that often travel in groups and are considered in the mid-weight range. While acid damage won’t hurt them, they’re vulnerable to shock damage.

These machines are made for combat, so they’re an ideal companion to have around when you get into trouble. Clawstriders are also smaller than most mounts, so they’re easy to maneuver without being hindered by obstacles on the terrain.

But of course, there are pros and cons to riding such a fierce fighter. The Clawstriders are fairly slow, so they’re not optimal for long travels. And honestly, there are times when you're better off traveling on foot .

2 Bristlebacks

The Bristlebacks are one of the first machine types you can mount in Forbidden West. You’ll be introduced to them during a short quest where the machines are disrupting a nearby tribe. These machines are very large and spout acid as one of their primary attacks. Because of these traits, Bristlebacks can make great traveling companions when you come across enemies.

Related: Horizon Forbidden West: How To Complete To The Burning Shores

But this is one of the reasons they can be so difficult to deal with, as many of your human enemies can mount them as well. Whether you’re dealing with them in stealth or out in the open, Bristlebacks make your battles all the more difficult. They can also be hard to sneak up on as they’re incredibly aggressive and quick to spot you, so the advantages really depend on who’s mounting them.

One mount that is completely unique in comparison to the rest is the Sunwing. In Forbidden West, you’ll be given the ability to override and mount a Sunwing, one of the game’s flying machines.

The Sunwing is a mount you don’t need to override every time you want to use one; you can call your Sunwing over whenever you want to use it, given that the area is unrestricted. With the Sunwing, you’re able to traverse the open world without roadblocks. It’s easy to avoid other machines and there aren’t any obstacles to hinder your travel. They’re a great option if you’re fleeing a fight as you can get to safe heights.

You’ll also be able to get to out-of-reach places you’d normally have to climb, like Tallnecks. The only downside to this machine is that it doesn’t offer much defense. Unlike some of the other machines, the Sunwing won’t necessarily fight for you if you get involved with other human enemies or machines, and it’ll easily take damage.

Mounts in Horizon Zero Dawn are covered on this page. Aloy can use her Override ability to hack enemies and convert them into mounts that can be ridden across the world, dramatically improving her speed. The machines that can be converted into Mounts are listed here.

When dismounted, Aloy can whistle for her mount to call it to her location. If Aloy has unlocked the skill "Call Mount +" she can call a mount even if she has not overridden a machine prior.

It would be really cool if you could mount a Sawtooth or a Behemoth.

I wish we could ride a Thunderjaw, now that’s BA!

I want to ride a storm bird or a ginhawk so you would not have to fight wachers and stuff

I really want to ride a corrupter Even though it’s override is impossible because it has no override

I really wanna ride a watcher, makes me feel like riding a raptor

Riding A Ravager/ Trampler Would be REALLY Badass.

I would rather ride a Stormbird.

How the heck do you get off a mount on PC i've hit every key on the keyboard ane even tried what looks like dismount in scroll wheel but nothing happens

Damn, they really need to add more rideable machines. Riding a sawtooth would be really badass.

I love the game, but I think they have a missed opportunity with just these mounts. If they added a couple more, and with each mount different attacks, the game would be that much better...

I am level 20 something now and I noticed after doing the correct caldron and a reboot as my mount seem glitched with the full tree unlocked in forger line for whistle for a mount...that yes i now get the Broadhead instead of the strider. When you first get mounts they fastly i think list all the mounts and poof off the screen it goes with apparently no way to recall that listed info. So what IS all the mounts and such??

Theres 3 mounts that i know of

You can mount Charger too. This is 3 best far i think rideable in this game

Umm this list is incomplete

Horizon Zero Dawn: How To Ride Robots & Unlock Permanent Mounts

Only on PS4: When Fast Travel isn't good enough, our heroine Aloy can claim her very own mounts -- and you can keep them with a specific skill.

horizon zero dawn fast travel mount

Aloy, the heroine of Horizon Zero Dawn , isn’t just a robot-hunter, she’s also a robot-tamer. Thanks to the Override Skill (obtained early in the game) you’ll be able to temporarily take control over robot minions to help you in combat. Override, when upgraded at the Cauldron dungeons found throughout the map, makes this skill even more powerful, providing Aloy with the ability to ride robotic animals in combat.

Basically, you can turn certain enemies into mounts. Unfortunately, these mounts don’t last long. The Override is temporary, and only lasts for a set amount of time before the bot goes hostile on you. But, mounting a machine is a good way to get around the environment without Fast Travel Packs, and it’s a fun way to escape a deadly encounter.

If you’re tired of losing mounts and want a more permanent solution, check out the basic tips below for a full explanation.

How To Ride Robots & Unlock Permanent Mounts

The Override Ability becomes available after completing your first Cauldron, and more Cauldrons become available as you explore the vast open world map. The more Cauldrons you complete, the more powerful your Override Ability will become, allowing you to ride tamed robots across the environment.

Override only gives you a temporary mount. They’ll disappear after leaving an area, and you’ll have to hunt down another roaming beast to take control all over again. There’s a way to skip this process and call in a fresh mount whenever you want.

  • Cost: 3 Skill Points

You’ll need to purchase and unlock “Lure Call”, “Combat Override” and “Combat Override+” before unlocking this ability, but if you spend your skill points on the skill tree, it won’t take long to reach “Call Mount+”.

Call Mount+ summons an already-Overridden robot for you to ride. It also aids you in combat right away, and can be called at any point in the game. Mounts aren’t allowed in Settlements, and will disappear when you leave it alone, but you can always call in a replacement.

Horizon: Zero Dawn Guide: How To Mount Machines

Image of Dean James

Horizon: Zero Dawn definitely provides one of the most unique game settings we’ve seen, meshing an older style world with technology. This means on top of the wild animals you see roaming the grasslands and other locations, you will also find machines that resemble different animals and dinosaurs. We’ve already told you in another guide how you can override these creatures, but now we are here to tell you how you can mount certain machines and ride them around the world of Horizon: Zero Dawn.

There are lots of different creatures you will come across in your travels in Horizon: Zero Dawn, but only a few of them can be mounted and ridden.

While there are additional machines in the game that you can override by completing Cauldrons, the ones that you can mount are all available from the beginning. It just depends on you finding them on the map.

One machine that can be overridden and mounted is the horse-like Strider, which you will do as part of a mission early on in the game. In addition, there are two more that you can mount by overriding them, which are the Broadhead and Charger.

Broadheads look like cattle with its horns extending out side to side, while Chargers look like a ram with curving horns that you should be able to see from a distance.

The method for mounting these is to first sneak up on them and override them. After one of these three machine types is under your control, press Triangle next to it to climb up on its back.

After mounting each of the machines, you can now travel much faster across the in-game world, but also be able to attack enemies as well. Make sure to take advantage of this, as the machines are pretty beastly in action.

As we told you in the skills guide , there is also a very useful tier four skill you can unlock known as Call Mount+, which will cause an overridden mount to show up for you to use at any time, even if you didn’t have one currently overridden yourself.

Horizon Zero Dawn How to Unlock Permanent Mount

February 25, 2017 by PowerPyx Leave a Comment

One feature of Horizon Zero Dawn is that you can override certain machines and use them as a mount. Then you can ride them like a horse, which makes navigating the huge open world much quicker.

So you went through all the trouble to catch one of these machines and suddenly it has disappeared. That’s normal, because machines only stay overriden for a set amount of time and then they go away.

But there is an easy way to unlock permanent mounts. They can also help you in battle! You can call a mount whenever you want, how often you want. Here’s how to do it:

  • In the Skill Menu buy “Call Mount +” (Forager Skill Tree).

horizon zero dawn fast travel mount

This skill calls a new overriden mount if no mount is available. To unlock the skill you need 3 skill points and unlock other skills in this tree. I recommend you get it as early as possible because the mount is really useful in combat, too. A fast way to get skill points in the early game is to climb all Tallnecks (there are 5 of them an each gives 1 skill point).

And this is how you get a permanent mount in Horizon Zero Dawn.

Horizon Zero Dawn Best Mount [Guide]

Horizon Zero Dawn Best Mount

The very first mount available to you, the Strider is what you’ll spend a large amount of the game riding.

They are plentiful, quick to override, and practical - but leave a lot to be desired in the attack department.

Despite this, the horse-like winnies and the shared history between Aloy and Striders (a strider is her first kill in the game) are sure to endear them to you.

  • Challenge Level 5
  • Charge - 20 Damage
  • Double Strike - 35 Damage
  • Hind Leg Strike - 70 Damage
  • Pivot Kick - 70 Damage

2. Broadhead

horizon zero dawn fast travel mount

You won’t come across Broadheads until you journey outside of the warm (ahem) comfort (ahem ahem) of Mother’s Embrace.

These cow-like machines pack more of a punch than their Strider counterparts, and can also be ridden without requiring any additional upgrades to your Override tool.

They are found in packs, and can be hard to sneak up on, but well worth it once you do - who doesn’t want to ride around on a metal cow shooting canisters off robot dinosaurs?

  • Challenge Level 10
  • Charge - 35 Damage

horizon zero dawn fast travel mount

While the first two most closely resemble a horse and a cow, the Charger is the next logical step - that’s right, a sheep.

Who knows - maybe one of the developers had a particularly rough petting zoo experience as a child - because these beasts are the best mounts in the game.

They can take a serious beating, and dish one out as well. They’re also one of the few machines to consistently take me by surprise, charging from behind me while I was stalking the herd.

Once you do manage to tame one, you’ll be wool on your way (sorry).

  • Challenge Level 13
  • Charge - 60 Damage
