What travelers are saying about our Africa tours

Travel tips for africa trips.

The best time for a trip to Africa depends on what you want to see during your vacation. The temperature is warm year-round, but the seasons affect both weather patterns and animal migrations across the continent. Because Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere, seasons are opposite those of North America—that means that during the summer months in North America, it’s winter in Africa.

Our Africa tour packages are designed to take you to the best sites at the ideal time of year. In general, you will want to visit Africa during the dry season, which differs from region to region. July through October is the best time for a safari in Tanzania or Kenya, with cooler temps and animal migrations happening across the Serengeti and Masai Mara. African tours that take you to Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Cape Town are best from April to October, when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for safari game drives or city sightseeing. In the deserts of Morocco and Egypt, the climate is very hot and dry; plan to visit Northern Africa in spring or fall when the weather is most pleasant.

A trip to Africa can mean anything from a wildlife safari to sipping a crisp white wine at a vineyard. When you travel with us, you’ll experience all the best places to visit in Africa alongside an expert Tour Director and local guides—which means you can get the most out of your trip, no matter where you go.

On Safari Tours you’ll experience game drives in wildlife-rich destinations like the Serengeti and Hwange National Park. Snap photos of the Big Five from your safari vehicle, and experience untouched Africa in handpicked hotels that put you at the heart of the action.

If you’re looking for a mix of city and wildlife, one of our Africa guided tours to Cape Town is the perfect fit. Want to visit excellent vineyards and Africa’s best coastal cities? The beaches and vineyards around Cape Town, Knysna, and Port Elizabeth definitely fit the bill.

For Africa tours and travel filled with culture and history, you’ll want to see the Highlights of Morocco or Ancient Egypt . You can explore the Sahara on camelback and browse colorful souks or stand beside the Great Pyramids of Giza and see the Great Sphinx. We make it easy to get closer to local culture and see the important landmarks because our carefully planned itineraries are crafted with these moments in mind.

There is no one dish that defines African cuisine. In Morocco, influences from Mediterranean, Arab, and Andalusian cultures can be found in the range of spices that flavor every meal. Traditional dishes include tagine —a stew made with beef, chicken, or lamb and vegetables—and couscous. Egyptian cuisine is also heavily influenced by Mediterranean flavors, and the Nile Valley produces an abundance of legumes and vegetables. Try shawarma and kebab , two meat dishes that are popular throughout Northern Africa and the Middle East.

In Kenya and Tanzania, cuisine is very tied to what is locally available—depending on where you are, you’ll find very different dishes! On our African tours, meals in your game lodges reflect Britain’s colonial influence. Curries and spicy foods are also popular, thanks to Indian and South Asian immigrants who call the region home.

South African food is called “rainbow cuisine” because of its multicultural influences. South Africa is also a very popular wine region, and produces some of the world’s best white wines.

Our escorted tours to Africa visit many different regions, which means a diverse range of cuisines to try!

On any tours around Africa, expect hot, sunny weather during the day and the chance for cooler temps at night. You’ll want loose-fitting, layered clothing for a range of temperatures, as well as sun protection, including a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses. If you are traveling in Morocco and Egypt, remember to pack modest clothing that can keep you covered during visits to mosques or other religious sites. You may also want to pack lightweight rainwear, as occasional rain showers are common during certain seasons.

If you are packing for a safari, it’s recommended you wear muted colors to avoid scaring away animals. Safari luggage restrictions are strongly enforced to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort aboard safari vehicles. You will need to bring a soft, flexible duffel bag as hard suitcases are not allowed.

Of course, once you’ve reserved your trip to Africa, we’ll send you detailed information about getting ready for your travels—including more packing tips!

Geography of Zimbabwe

Top places to visit in zambia, the best time to visit canary islands, best time to visit madagascar, the best time to take an african river cruise.

  • Expect the unexpected! No two safaris are the same, and that’s part of the adventure. Your guides are experts at tracking the animals in every area, but which animals you see, when, and what they’re up to is as wild as the savanna itself. You might come across lions enjoying a zebra carcass or antelope galloping across the plains. It’s even possible that your best shot at seeing these animals is right around your camp or lodge.
  • What’s a game drive? A safari game drive is when you go out in a vehicle in search of the animals in their most natural habitat. The vehicles are often 4x4 drive open-air vehicles and get as close as safely possible to the animals so that you can see them in all their wild majesty.
  • Game drives are not off-roading adventures – In order to preserve the habitats, the game drives stick to the established trails and routes rather than just crossing the plains at random, but these trails were established by the experts to maximize the opportunities to see wildlife on your game drive. These drives tend to be leisurely, allowing the best chance to take in the surrounding environment and hopefully spot some amazing wildlife.
  • Game drives generally take place in the cool morning or late afternoon – remember, the best way to see the animals of the safari in action is to follow their behavior, and they tend to be most active when the sun isn’t as high in the sky.
  • The length of a game drive is generally around 3 or 4 hours , but this varies based on what your guide feels is the best way to track the animals.
  • Alternatives to game drives on a safari vacation might include an aerial tour in a hot air balloon, mountain biking and horseback riding, hikes, a river cruise to see the animals via the water, or a nighttime game drive that shows off the nocturnal wildlife of Africa.
  • The atmosphere of a safari vacation is relaxed but immersive . Imagine being literally inside your favorite Animal Planet documentary. Your itinerary won’t be jam-packed with things to do, but the marvels of simply looking out your window to a giraffe grazing in a nearby tree or seeing an elephant passing casually by the lodge is an unforgettable experience.
  • The safari experience changes based on the season – in each region, the dry and wet seasons bring with them different wildlife behaviors and habits and even migrations, so if there is an animal you know you want to see, let us know so we can recommend the best time to travel.
  • Safari vacations usually combine multiple wildlife reserves , from national parks to private game concessions. Getting from one camp to the next might include a long drive through the plains or a scenic flight on an 8-passenger propeller plane.

  • While you are in major cities, you will likely have access to ATMs that work with most major international credit cards (local bank cards will probably not work). You should expect a marginal international transaction fee.
  • Cash can be used for anything you’ll need while on the safari itself, especially in the bush.
  • You can exchange your money most easily at the international airports upon arrival or at a bank with presentation of your passport if necessary.
  • Avoid paying with travelers checks. These are not accepted in most places, so it’s safer to just stick with your card.

The most out-there tour anywhere.

Its name means “sunny place” in the Berber tongue, but “Africa” may as well be a synonym for “vastness.” A truly massive continent comprising over 20% of the planet’s available land, Africa is home to the world’s largest desert, its longest river, its hottest temperatures, and hundreds of dialects and cultures spread among a billion people. But as mind-boggling as it seems at first, you’ll be amazed how intimate it feels once you get to know it. This is adventure’s last great frontier. Come blaze some trails.

The Top 10 African Safari Tours in 2021

Scott Bay is a magazine editor specializing in travel, architecture, and gear. He was previously an assistant editor at Travel + Leisure . His work has also appeared in Wired , Architectural Digest , Wallpaper , Robb Report , Saveur , Daily Beast , and more.

This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

A safari tops most of Travel + Leisure readers' bucket lists — a trip that many spend a lifetime daydreaming about , saving for, and eventually splurging on. On this type of adventure, travelers pull out all of the stops and have high expectations. One of the best ways to have that dream trip live up to expectations is to hire one of the best safari outfitters, as voted by the discerning readers of T+L.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

The safari companies favored by T+L readers owe much of their success to the talented advisors, who get to know their clients so they can create truly customized trips. "We couldn't have worked with a better group of people," one reader said of No. 5 winner Travel Beyond. "They were friendly, efficient, informative, and made sure our entire trip went smoothly. We never had a care."

Each safari outfitter also displays a deep connection to the national world and conservation efforts . Readers felt that No. 10 andBeyond particularly excelled in this area: "They have an excellent commitment to local communities, protecting wildlife and the environment." Another reader said of No. 9 Wilderness Safaris, "Their commitment to local communities and protecting wildlife is outstanding."

Read on to see the full list of T+L readers' picks for the best safari outfitters — all of which not only make spotting the Big Five easy but also arrange unparalleled perks and accommodations.

1. Micato Safaris

This company has been voted onto T+L's list of the world's best safari outfitters every year since the awards' inception — and for good reason. The family-run business has deep roots in Kenya, and its owners' love for the country (and continent) is evident in the way they operate. Each itinerary, whether private or with a group, is tailored to be the most luxurious, comfortable, and exciting adventure possible. Readers couldn't say enough kind words about their recent trips. "Never met tour guides or staff that were so friendly and knowledgeable about the animals and the locations and the culture," wrote one reader. "They seemed to have a sixth sense for anticipating our needs. It was really something." A few more touted Micato's reputation, with one saying, "Simply the best safari outfitter in Africa. Bar none."

Africa's "Big Five"

Meet the "big five".

Lions (Panthera leo) are often seen in Masai Mara National Reserve (Kenya), Serengeti & Tarangire national parks, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Tanzania). Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) can weigh as much as 1,500 lbs. – big and dangerous enough to keep most predators at bay. Buffalo roam the Sabi Sands Game Reserve (South Africa) and Serengeti National Park (Tanzania). black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) may be spotted in Ngorongoro Crater and the Masai Mara. leopards (Panthera pardus) are prevalent in most parks and reserves in east and southern Africa; you'll often need to look up to spot one... since they spend much of their time in trees. African Elephant (Loxodonta africana), the world's largest land mammal, is a fixture throughout the Masai Mara, as well as Amboseli and Serengeti national parks. Although they are not among the "Big Five," a gorilla trek in Rwanda is one of life's memorable experiences.

Ride aboard a 4x4 vehicle to one of these villages for tea with the village chief and a crash-course in Berber culture. Then it's on to our desert camp, where dinner is served Berber-style under a tent with musical entertainment. Experience local customs like riding a camel... smoking shisha (using a hubbly-bubbly pipe, or hookah, to smoke flavored tobacco)... or having your hands or feet decorated with traditional henna designs!

Meet Maasai warriors, artisans and school children eager to share their customs and homeland with you in moments so heartwarming you'll return home transformed. The pulse of South Africa is, of course, in its people... in the streets and squares of Jo'burg and Cape Town where a multitude of cultures (Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, European, Malaysian and Indian, to name a few) collide and mix in dazzling displays of art, music, dance and cuisine... and in the bushveld, where you'll encounter tribal traditions that sustain a proud and irrepressible people... always ready to share their customs, language, dances and songs with a warm welcome.

South Africa Tours & Vacations

Silhouette of African safari scene with giraffe, elephant, rhino, and vehicle at sunset

The whole ‘country of contrasts’ thing has become a bit of a cliche

But what else do you call a place where (in a three-week period) you could happily slalom between penguins waddling on the Cape and lions stalking the bushveld, cinematic coastal switchbacks and burnt Kalahari sand, the oldest wine industry outside   Europe   and cutting-edge fusion cuisine? ‘Contrast’, doesn’t really do South Africa justice. The beauty of a South Africa tour (besides the peace of mind that comes with an expert local guide) is being able to fit so much   Africa   into so little time. From the Stellenbosch winelands to Kruger , Blyde River and beyond, this is a place where you can take your   safari   with a side of espresso.

Best time to visit south africa.

South Africa is an excellent year-round destination. Winters are mild, dry and good for wildlife viewing. Summers can get very hot and humid but are a great time for visiting beaches and festivals. Spring is a great time for viewing wildflowers in the Northern and Western Cape provinces, and very little rain falls anywhere in autumn, but the days are warm and the nights cool. Overall, there’s always a good time to head to South Africa.

Culture and customs

South Africa’s culture is one of the most diverse in the world. From indigenous tribes like the Zulu, San Bushmen and Xhosa to the Afrikaners of Dutch heritage, and immigrants of British descent, visitors will be able to experience a magnificent melting pot of customs and traditions. The significant Indian and Jewish populations also add to the ethnic mix. From the proud, beaded Zulu warriors that have inhabited the land for centuries to newly arrived immigrants from   Europe   and   Asia , South Africa’s culture has been shaped by millions of people.

The cuisine is generally a combination of Indian, Dutch, English and tribal flavors and techniques, while dress can range from modern fashion in the big cities to simple traditional, tribal dress in the bush. Although South Africa has made significant inroads towards peace and reconciliation since the end of apartheid, racial tensions are sometimes evident, and it is generally best not to contribute to this in any way. Overall, most travelers will find South Africans to be welcoming, appreciative of your visit and ready to share their homeland and stories.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Foods to try in South Africa

South Africa is fast becoming one of the most interesting wine producing regions in the world. Quality has risen steeply in the past decade so if you’re visiting the Stellenbosch Wine Region, be sure to sample some fine reds, which are world-class.

With such easy access to the Indian Ocean and Southern Atlantic, South Africa boasts some of the best seafood dining experiences you’ll ever have. From an indulgent oyster platter at a Cape Town restaurant to a spicy seafood curry in Durban, the seafood here is fresh, cheap and flavorsome.

Biltong tends to divide people. Some find this preserved, spiced meat snack impossible to refuse and others simply can’t stomach it. Either way, it’s extremely popular and readily available in markets, supermarkets and shops throughout South Africa.

4. Boerewors

Another one for the meat-lovers, this coiled, spicy sausage is a South African delicacy best done on the barbecue. Flavored with coriander, cloves and nutmeg, this is a meat born from South African and Dutch traditions.

Geography and environment

South Africa showcases one of the most diverse and stunning natural environments in the world. Visitors are able to soak up golden rays on sun-drenched beaches, journey through acre upon acre of dry savannah, admire lush, green meadows, walk through tropical forest and stop to take in views of wide, ancient canyons. It’s also possible to stroll the streets of an urban city one day and meander along a dirt track passing small farms and villages the next. South Africa truly is a land of contrasts, and this begins with the landscapes and environment.

Located on the tip of Southern Africa, South Africa shares land borders with Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland. It also shares a long stretch of coastline with the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans. The topography of the land changes remarkably around the country, from the lofty plateaus of the inland region to the low-lying coast and mountainous ranges of the Cape. This variance in topography makes South Africa rich in many species of flora and fauna, something that attracts many tourists and travelers from all over the world.

History and government

Early history.

The land of South Africa has been inhabited for centuries by tribes hailing from different areas of the African continent, including the San and Bantu people. Most tribes relied on hunting and gathering, but gradually were introduced to agriculture and animal husbandry over the years. From around 1200 AD, the tribal people of South Africa started to become influenced by outsiders, including Muslim traders, the Portuguese and the Dutch, who established a settlement in the mid 1600s.

The Dutch continued to dominate the country until the 1800s, when the British became interested in the Cape Colony. During this time, the native population had become increasingly dissatisfied with being marginalized and treated poorly by their European colonizers. Many native people were used as slaves on plantations and were treated brutally by their ‘employers’ and many resented losing their land, culture and traditional way of life. Further to this, the Dutch descendants (known as Boers) didn’t appreciate the arrival of the British in a territory they had inhabited for years before their arrival. This frustration and anger regularly resulted in confrontation and armed conflict between the British, Boers and Zulus, culminating in a series of wars – most notably the Boer Wars.

Recent history

More recently, South Africa has managed to overcome the Apartheid era, a time where discrimination of black people was legalized. Until 1994, black people were unable to legally own land or vote in elections. Further to this, education, healthcare, beaches and public places like cinemas were segregated. During this time, South Africa was ruled and controlled by the white minority, much to the dissatisfaction of the black population and ultimately, the world. After much international pressure and many attempts at reform, the Apartheid era was finally ended in 1994, with Nelson Mandela stepping up to lead the nation as President. Due to this challenging history, modern day South Africa has many social issues to work on and resolve, but many of its people are filled with hope and optimism. In 2010, South Africa successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup, much to the delight of its citizens and the world.

Visitors who don't want to sacrifice creature comforts while on safari will appreciate &Beyond's offerings. During the tour operator's 10-day Kings of the Jungle safari – which starts at $11,340 per person – travelers will see breathtaking natural wonders like the Ngorongoro Crater and the Maasai Mara savanna. But the highlight of this journey is its four-night stay at Tanzania's Serengeti National Park . After watching animals like wildebeest and zebras partake in the great migration while also spotting lions, giraffes and more, vacationers retreat to high-end tents and lodges with private bathrooms.

Wilderness Safaris

For some of Africa's most jaw-dropping scenery, opt for the seven-night Namibian Adventure Safari tour offered by Wilderness Safaris. This weeklong trip features visits to the Namib Desert's dune-filled Sossusvlei region (which you may recognize from the film "Mad Max: Fury Road") and the mountainous Palmwag Concession – a protected area with springboks, giraffes, black rhinos and more. The package's per person fee starts at $6,725, which covers most meals, park entrance fees, and transfers from Namibia's capital Windhoek and between the safari destinations. It also covers your stay at properties like the fully solar-powered Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp and the five-star Little Kulala lodge amid the stunning desert.

Wild Rwanda Safaris

Adventurous travelers sticking to a more conservative budget should consider Wild Rwanda Safaris' Bwindi Gorilla Safari. The three-day package features a full day in southwestern Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (a haven for silverback gorillas) and an adjacent Batwa Pygmy community. Wild Rwanda Safaris allows guests to choose between midrange, luxury and super luxury accommodation, which can help keep costs down if necessary. The company's packages include the $700 permit required to visit the gorilla park. The round-trip journey by safari vehicle to and from Kigali, Rwanda, and English-speaking guide services are also covered in all rates. The tour can begin from Kampala, Uganda, as well, although you'll spend longer on the road to the park.

If you want to explore multiple destinations while on safari with plenty of comfort (but a price tag to match), book the 15-day Micato Grand Safari. This outing by Micato Safaris starts with a two-day visit to Nairobi, Kenya, before continuing to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Maasai Mara National Reserve, and the Amboseli and Serengeti national parks for wildlife-viewing excursions. During your trip, you'll see Mount Kilimanjaro as zebras, gazelles and more roam in the foreground. The package costs at least $22,450 per person (based on double occupancy rates) and includes a hot air balloon ride, a camel tour led by members of the Samburu tribe, and lodging at upscale properties like Serengeti's Four Seasons outpost. The company also offers various extensions allowing you to explore other parts of Africa, from the island paradise of Zanzibar to the deserts of Namibia.

For an inside-out trip through the natural wonders of Botswana, Discover Africa's nine-day Epic Botswana Adventure is a formidable option. You'll start out at a riverside lodge on the Chobe River – a great location for elephant spotting – before moving onto the marshy Okavango Delta, a wildlife-rich area where you can spot a huge range of animals from leopards to rhinos. The safari ends at the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, a good place to admire wildlife like zebras and buffalo on the savanna as well as salt pans from a former lake. You'll stay in upscale lodges and campsites within close reach of the wilderness. All meals and transport along the tour are included in the price tag (which starts at $4,800 per person), but international flights are excluded.

Wild Wings Safaris

tours for africa

If you're looking to have a broader experience that mixes in some history and beach time, consider Wild Wings Safaris' eight-day Battlefields, Bush and Beach Safari. You'll start off visiting some of South Africa's historic sites from the Boer wars, before moving on to the Phinda Private Game Reserve, which doesn't allow day visitors, so you should be able to look out for the big five without too many crowds. The tour wraps up at Thonga Beach Lodge, where you can snorkel or scuba dive near coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. As far as safaris go, this one is an affordable option, starting at about $2,795 per person with all meals included as well as a rental car; for the cheapest price, you will need to drive yourself between the destinations, but it's possible to pay an additional fee for a driver to guide you instead.

Cuckoo Safaris

Aerial few of the world famous Victoria Falls with a large rainbow over the falls. This is right at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Southern Africa. The mighty Victoria Falls at Zambezi river are one of the most visited touristic places in Africa.

This tour company kicks off its tours from the majestic Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, with a host of safaris that range from two days to nine, across Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana, including some family-friendly choices. For an affordable option, there's the four-day Discover Victoria Falls, Chobe and Hwange Park safari, which will take you on two full-day tours to Chobe National Park (across the border in Botswana) and to Hwange, Zimbabwe's largest national park, where you should keep your eyes peeled for lions, elephants and more. This safari also includes a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River. The price starts at $900 per person, which includes the tours plus breakfast, lunch and lodging in Victoria Falls; travelers will need to pay for entrance fees to the parks and dinner.

Compass Odyssey

Explore the savanna and deserts of southwest Africa with Compass Odyssey's eight-day Namibia Wildlife Safari. You'll visit a community-based conservation area in Damaraland – known for its desert-adapted elephants, oryx, giraffes and other wildlife – while staying in the rustic-chic Doro Nawas Camp. You'll also spend two days in Etosha National Park, seeking wildlife at the park's bustling waterholes by day and embarking on an evening game drive as well. Starting at $3,750 per person, the tour includes most meals and all park entry fees, but not flights; the company does allow the tour to be customized on request.

Vaccination and visa requirements for African countries

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Inoculation requirements can include vaccination against COVID-19 and yellow fever, and you'll need to get these vaccines before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

Note that, outside of what's required, there are a number of other vaccinations that are recommended, so ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor to see if you need to bring anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of your destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of November 2022:

Botswana: If you have recently visited a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa, Central and South America. Consult the World Health Organization's website for a list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days without a visa.

Kenya: Travelers to Kenya must have been vaccinated against COVID-19 with the last shot administered more than 14 days before arrival in the country. Unvaccinated visitors can enter with a negative PCR test, conducted no more than 72 hours before departure. Proof of COVID-19 tests or vaccines must be uploaded to an online system called Panabios. Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places with yellow fever or cholera outbreaks to be vaccinated against these illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an e-visa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no more than eight weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Travelers must be able to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination with a QR code to enter Tanzania. Unvaccinated travelers must take a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure, and the test results should be accessible by QR code. Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country.

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 – and be sure to print a copy of the approval to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a visa on arrival for a $100 fee; it's recommended you bring cash to cover this. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: To enter Uganda, you must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Visitors who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must show proof of vaccination but do not need a test to enter Zambia; unvaccinated travelers must undergo a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure. Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk.

Visas are required to visit Zambia, but these can be obtained online before your departure or at a port of entry. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: To enter Zimbabwe, travelers must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or must take a negative PCR test no more than 48 hours before your departure. As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks also require a vaccine against this illness.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

South Africa ms1

Cape Town is the second most populated city in South Africa. It’s known for its landscapes, gardens, museums, cuisine and wine, but most importantly, it’s known for its wildlife. South Africa is a great place to see the Big Five: elephants, rhinos, leopards, lions and buffalo, as well as many species of snakes, birds and even eight different species of whales.

South Africa ms2

Referred to as “The Place of the Mountain” this Big 5 reserve also has five eco-systems. It has a moderate climate year round with rainfall in summer. The area is malaria-free and has an upper area with rock formations and grass plains, and a lower area of vegetation and wetlands.

Hanglip Mountain Lodge:

There’s never a dull moment at Hanglip Mountain Lodge! The luxury suites here are a great blend of romantic African and African baroque. There are ten luxury bedrooms, spa facilities, dining room and lounge, bar facilities, wine cellar, swimming pool, and the Hanglip fig tree outdoor venue. Every room has a private deck with views of the mountain and lounge areas with welcoming fireplaces. There are also game drives, bush walks, horseback safaris, helicopter flights, paintball; abseiling, and quad bikes.

Kruger National Park:

Imagine yourself exploring almost five million acres of protected game reserve spread out on the plains of South Africa. Here you can see the Big 5: elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards and rhinos running free out in their natural habitat. But wait! There are more than three hundred types of trees and five hundred species of birds to admire, too!

Destination Must-Do's

South Africa md1

Table Mountain:

This landmark is Africa’s most welcoming and photographed attraction and it’s no wonder why! Visitors enjoy riding to the top of the mountain by cable car where the most spectacular views can be found. The mountain is home to thousands of species of plants and flowers as well as the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. Definitely do not leave your camera behind for this trip!

South Africa md2

Featherbed Reserve (milk trees):

Located on the Knysna lagoon, there is much to see in the Featherbed Nature Reserve. You can explore the reserve riding on a 4x4 vehicle and trailer that takes visitors to key viewpoints on the reserve, or you can explore an ancient sea cave. Milk trees are extremely common here and they can grow up to six feet tall and have a spiny shrub-like look with small yellow flowers along the side.

BouldersBeach800x450

Boulders Beach:

Feel the sea breeze in your hair and the sand between your toes at Boulder’s Beach in False Bay. Aside from being a beautiful spot to lounge, swim, and picnic, it’s also the only place in the world where you can observe African Penguins in their natural habitat. A colony of these adorably furry endangered birds settled at the beach in 1982 and never left. You’ll probably want to stay a while too.

South Africa md4

Winelands Region:

South Africa has some really great wine. Visit the heart of the winelands region and take in the colorful mountains and vineyards that seem to go on for days. Don’t forget to taste some of that delicious stuff while you’re there!

As you prepare to explore South Africa, enjoy a casual dress style and be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. Lightweight cottons are suggested for shorts, slacks, tee shirts, as well as hats and one warm jacket and/or jumper.

You’re in for a treat as you sample the truly unique flavors of Africa. The cuisine is sometimes called "rainbow cuisine," as it enjoys a variety of multicultural sources. Eating and drinking in South Africa is a culinary experience not to be missed.

One of the best parts of traveling is coming back home with souvenirs that really reflect the place you’ve just been. In South Africa you’ll find a plethora of cultural products like carvings of animals made of soap stone, ebony, or other woods; wooden masks, bowls, jewelry and chess sets; jewelry made of precious stones like diamonds and semi-precious stones such as malachite, lapis and topaz; native art paintings, murals and sculptures; safari clothing; and tie-dyed prints of animals.

Safaris aren't the only tourist attraction in Africa. From cruises to wine tasting, here's what else you can do

By ,cnbc • published may 27, 2024 • updated on may 27, 2024 at 10:45 pm.

Africa is blessed with some of the rarest and most beautiful animals in the world — a fact that entices tourists to book safaris year-round.

But safaris only scratch the surface of what the continent has to offer.

From wine tours to vibrant coastal cities, other experiences await those who are willing to go beyond game drives and delve deeper into the core of the continent.

For those who love hiking, Africa is blessed with many peaks — from Morocco's Mount Toubkal to the continent's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

But there's also Mount Nyangani in Zimbabwe, which has a skywalk atop the Mutarazi Falls, the country's highest waterfall.

South Africa's Table Mountain can be climbed in a matter of hours, but adrenaline junkies may prefer to bungie jump from Johannesburg's Soweto Towers , or the Bloukrans Bridge along the country's famous "Garden Route."

Africa is ideal for travelers who crave adventure, said Zina Bencheikh, managing director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Intrepid Travel.

She recommends Madagascar's Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, which has two geological zones called the "Small Tsingy" and "Big Tsingy," which in the local language of Malagasy, refers to a place "where one cannot walk barefoot."

"Big Tsingy Trek is not your usual hike!" she said, describing it as a "labyrinth of limestone formations that resemble a forest made of rock."

In Namibia, travelers can climb the iconic Dune 45 to admire the sand dunes of the Sossusvlei, explore the eerie white clay pan of Deadvlei , or hike through the picturesque Sesriem Canyon.

At Victoria Falls, along the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, travelers can whitewater raft, bungee jump or swim at the Devil's Pool, which is on Zambia's side of the falls. Similar adventures can be found in Jinja, Uganda, where the River Nile begins.

Hot air balloons are a popular and adventurous way to explore too, with a bird's eye view of the berber villages of Morocco to Kenya's Masai Mara.

Explore the beach

African beach towns combine beauty and culture, in places like Seychelles, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Mozambique, Mauritius, Zanzibar, Ghana, Namibia and Egypt.

Mombasa, a coastal city in Kenya, is one example.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla visit Mombasa's Fort Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on Nov. 03, 2023

"Here, you'll experience African, Indian and Arab cultures in one place. Fort Jesus is one of Mombasa's notable sites and was built by the Portuguese in 1593. In less than 200 years, the fort changed hands nine times," said Luciemarie Swanepoel, owner of African Sky of Diamonds Tours & Safaris.

She recommends visiting Zanzibar to wander the Stone Town's labyrinthine alleys along with Kenya's Swahili Coast, the historical Gede ruins, and the UNESCO-named Mijikenda Kaya Forests .

"Madagascar … is another island gem, with beaches like Nosy Be and Ile Sainte Marie boasting palm-fringed coasts and vibrant coastal villages," said Swanepoel.

Durban and Cape Town are two of the best beach destinations in South Africa, she said, adding that travelers can kitesurf, snorkel, kayak or search for dugongs and whales there.

Go on a cruise

From budget-friendly houseboats to luxurious all-inclusive boutique lake cruises, Africa has a range of unique boating experiences.

Cruises along the Nile, Zambezi and Chobe rivers, as well as a cruise along Rwanda's Lake Kivu, come highly recommended, as water journeys can offer a spectacular viewing platform for wildlife.

A boat on Botswana's Chobe river at sunset.

"During a river cruise, you may spot a herd of elephants wading through shimmering water, witness great buffalo gathering along the water's edge, and even observe crocodiles stealthily slicing through pools. Hundreds of hippos also wallow in the river with just their nostrils poking out," says Kate Powell, general manager of the houseboat company Zambezi Queen Collection.

Travelers can also cruise between villages, fish, and bask in the tranquil waters.

"One can explore the Manambolo River on a pirogue, or wooden dugout canoe, under the shadow of towering rock cliffs [or] stop to explore a cave and the eerie tombs of the Vazimba, said to be the earliest inhabitants of Madagascar," said Intrepid's Bencheikh.

In addition to being a popular stop for world cruises, East and South Africa have their own ocean cruise routes which follow the coastlines and visit offshore islands. Silversea, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC have cruises departing from Africa.

The best places — and best times — to take a safari

Maritime journeys in Africa allow visitors to experience the continent's wildlife, cultures and landscapes from a unique vantage point, said Kevin Bubolz, Norwegian's vice president for Continental Europe, Middle East and Africa.

"In Port Elizabeth, the Penguin Island Cruise excursion is a standout experience. You'll journey to the world's largest colony of African penguins in their natural habitat," he said. "If you're lucky, you might also catch a glimpse of playful humpback and bottle-nose dolphins."

Countries like Morocco, Namibia and Ethiopia have established wine regions. But South Africa is the continent's crown jewel.

"South Africa is renowned for its world-class wine regions, with the Western Cape being the heart of the industry," said Wrenelle Stander, CEO of Wesgro, Cape Town's tourism and trade agency.

"The areas around Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl comprise the famous Cape Winelands, where visitors can tour historic estates, taste award-winning wines, and learn about the winemaking process."

The wine country of Franschhoek, outside of Cape Town, South Africa.

Not only is Stellenbosch one of the best places for wine tours, it's also a culinary hot spot, known for its innovative food scene. Elmarie Rabe, the marketing manager at Visit Stellenbosch, advises travelers to select wineries that are committed to sustainable and organic practices.

"Also consider the traveling distance between farms, as Stellenbosch stretches over 60 square kilometers," she said.

The best time to visit is during the harvest season from late January to March, when the vineyards are in full swing. But every season has its own charm, she added.

"Spring offers lush landscapes and ideal weather, while winter is perfect for enjoying bold red wines by the fireplace. Summer provides sunny days perfect for outdoor wine tasting," Rabe said.

Most Underrated City in Africa to Visit in 2024

I n this article, we will reveal the most underrated city in Africa to visit in 2024. If you wish to look at our detailed rankings and analysis, please switch over to the 20 Most Underrated Cities in Africa to Visit in 2024 .

Africa Unveiled: Exploring the Untapped Potential of a Continent’s Tourism

In the vast tapestry of global tourism, the beauty of Africa remains an underutilized speck. UNWTO reports that as of 2023, international tourist arrivals in Africa accounted for just 5.1% of the worldwide volume. This comes even though tourism in Africa swiftly recovered to 96% of pre-pandemic volumes in 2023, with only the Middle East having a better recovery. Yet, much like a pearl that remains concealed behind an uncomely shell, the vast savannahs and bustling cities of Africa remain overlooked due to factors such as a lack of digital infrastructure, safety concerns, and other socio-political reasons.

According to Euromonitor International , online sales account for nearly 50% of global travel sales, however, in Middle East & Africa, this figure is closer to 30%. Similarly, data from Mastercard Incorporated (NYSE: MA ) shows that the percentage of individuals who make or receive digital payments in Sub-Saharan Africa remains 15% lower than the global average. Mastercard Incorporated (NYSE: MA) reveals that this is despite the fact that more individuals in the region are making digital payments than ever before.

A lack of digital infrastructure massively undermines tourism in Africa and based on trends shared by Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. (NYSE: HLT ), it may prove even more detrimental in the coming summer. According to Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. (NYSE: HLT), 80% of modern-day travelers feel it’s important to be able to book their trip entirely online.

Moreover, in a survey of travel providers in South Africa, Flywire Corporation (NASDAQ: FLYW ) reported that travel providers now believe that having better AI and digital tools is essential for sustaining tourism. According to Flywire Corporation (NASDAQ: FLYW), 82% of providers revealed that their customers have been asking for more digital amenities or tools. In addition, Flywire Corporation (NASDAQ: FLYW) reports that digital payment tools are the ones that providers consider most crucial to improving customer satisfaction.

However, on a positive note, the 2024 travel trends report by Mastercard Incorporated (NYSE: MA) shows that between 2019 and 2024, the percentage of tourism cash volumes (cash carried as a percentage of total travel spending) reduced by 10% in Sub-Saharan Africa. Moreover, a rise in demand for authentic and immersive vacations may also prove beneficial for growth in African tourism. More and more tourists are now ditching conventional hotspots in search of meaningful travel experiences, as part of a trend called experiential travel .

"Even with ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty, travel demand has remained strong as consumers continue to prioritize the value of experiences and connections over things.” - Kevin Jacobs, CFO & President, Global Development, Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. (NYSE: HLT)

As tourists scour the remote reaches of the world in search of destination dupes, the rugged and untapped beauty of Africa has incredible potential to steal the show. Recently, several African nations have made major strides to uplift tourism in their respective countries. South Africa has offered visa waivers on 90-day stays to almost 132 countries , including 32 in Africa. Similarly, Angola expanded its visa exemptions list to 98 countries in December. Other nations such as Rwanda, Gambia, Benin, and Seychelles have all waived visa restrictions for African tourists.

While some destinations such as Cape Town and Cairo already host a fair share of international tourists each year, some of the most beautiful places in Africa continue to be ignored. If you’re unfamiliar with the Mother Continent’s best tourist spots, you might be wondering about the best place to visit in Africa for first timers , or perhaps the safest place to visit in Africa . If so, join us as we look at the most underrated cities in Africa to visit in 2024 . Alternatively, you may be interested in similarly visit-worthy destinations in Asia or Europe .

Our Methodology

To develop our list of the most underrated cities in Africa to visit in 2024 , we used existing articles from sources such as our list of Cheapest Cities to Visit in Africa , CN Traveler , and The Travel. The most recommended items were shortlisted and scored on 2 metrics. The first metric was the frequency with which each article was recommended. The second metric was a ranking factor scored on the basis of safety, online reviews for popular attractions, as well as other useful feedback on forums such as Reddit. Each city’s score was then accumulated across both metrics to obtain our Insider Monkey score. The list was sorted in descending order, with the top 20 items being selected as the most underrated cities in Africa to visit in 2024 .

The most underrated city in Africa to visit in 2024 is Zanzibar City.

1. Zanzibar City, Tanzania

Insider Monkey Score: 10.8

US Travel Advisory for Country: Level 2

If you’re looking for a destination that has it all, the Zanzibar City in Tanzania is the best place to vacation. At Zanzibar City, you will find Stone Town, a world heritage site that operated as a trading post along the spice, silk, and slave trade routes. Many of the colonial era landmarks are preserved, including the Old Fort, the House of Wonder, as well as various cathedrals & mosques. Moreover, the Zanzibar Archipelago is home to pristine white sand beaches where you can spend your days sipping coconut water, diving among corals, or swimming alongside dolphins.

What people love about South Africa Tours

With Gareth we had a great, well organized short week, too short but ful of information, entertainment, fun.
Our guide was superlative. Our itinerary was superb. Our accommodation and food really satisfying and well beyond expectations. It was a great trip and I'd do it again at my first opportunity. And I'll recommend to far and wide!
This tour was one of the greatest travel experiences I've ever had. Our CEO Alfred Dovey led the way throughout South Africa with such care and knowledge about everything we did while providing clear direction of what each plan of the day was and where we needed to be. I feel was was able to see, learn and experience South Africa in a way I could have never done on my own. I highly recommend this G Adventure tour.

"This was my first experience with a guided tour and i'm very happy to have joined the family of Earthstompers, Christine was more than a guide she was more of a friend on this great tour. Well organized, great places to stay and the food been offered on tour was also very good.

National Geographic Journeys with G Adventures

"The tour had its ups and downs. It started slow and a bit confusing with transfers and plans on when and where to first meet. The first hotel was fine and the day of touring was ok. The CEO was pedantic, lectured and repeated a lot but he grew on me over the 10 days. He genuinely wanted to serve the group. The optional wine tour was good. The Soweto tour was the first exceptional thing, several days into the tour. But the Holiday Inn and food there was not good. The two nights in Johannesburg were supposed to be a barbecue then African food the second night. Both nights were actually terrible buffet food you’d get at a Holiday Inn in Kansas City. Things finally improved at the Eco Lodge near Krueger. And the nicest place we stayed with the only decent food on the trip was at the Kwawongwe Reserve. Those two days were great. So I don’t think I’ll be taking another G Adventures tour unless you offer something more upscale.

"There was so much to see, animals and the desert that is exotic to those of us who live in America or Europe. However, the trip felt rushed, we were up early every day and there were long bus rides. I think I would have preferred to see fewer places but seem more of them

Monrovia- Robertsports – Grand Cape Mount County will be the place of attraction when international Surfing stars come together to compete in the African surfing Tour.

By: Christopher C Walker [email protected] 0777898224/0886723075

The competition is organized by the Liberian Surfing Association and African Surfing Confederation.

It is hosted under the theme’ “Africa Tour 24 Surf to Rise, Surf’s Up, Liberia! Join the Wave.”

According to the organizers, the weeklong international event will kick off today May 23 with over 20 athletes battling to secure qualifications for the Olympics games in France.

The president of the Liberia Surfing federation Naquetta Ricks said they learned about the Africa Surfing tour which is a new event in Africa at the beginning of 2024.

Ghana was the designated location for the 2024 African surfing Tour but due to some technical reasons they couldn’t and Liberian took advantage of the inability to host the event.

Madam Ricks said they have always dreamt about an athlete from Liberia representing the country at the Olympics in surfing and thought it was a good opportunity to showcase Liberia to the world in surfing.

“This event came about because the African Surfing Confederation got recognized by the international Surfing Association,” Ricks said.

According to her, the tour is a way of giving athletes the chance to qualify for the Olympics games.

Speaking on Intel Sports program, “Talk Sports,” Madam Ricks said she is hopeful Liberians can take advantage of the competition to qualify for the Olympics in 2026 and the world Surfing tour.

She said the sport is a billion dollars industry but in Africa it is a little known sport. However, she believes that with more support, Liberia can make a name in the world because the country has one of the top surfing destinations in the world.

“We have over ten Liberians who will be competing in the tour and we are optimistic that they will come out with flying colors for the country, most especially when the competition is taking place in Liberia.”

“Our guys are ready for this competition and have been training for months, this is a good chance to make history in this new sport,” Madam Ricks said.

She told the program that over 20 foreign athletes will be competing in the competition that will qualify the winners for the Olympics games.

When asked about the financial struggle that comes with hosting such a tournament, the Liberia Surfing federation president who is also a representative of the state of Colorado in the United States of America said they have a budget of over one hundred and twenty thousand United States dollars to take care of and are trying to work in it.

She admitted that the Ministry of Youth and Sports has been supportive of the competition and is sure in the future the sports will be given some support by the government.

The competition will begin on the 23- 28 and will also show the tourism part of Liberia which will bring about economic benefits to the people of Grand Cape Mount County.

Madam Ricks disclosed that Liberia has several good sites for Surfing including Maryland, Grand Bassa and Sinoe counties.

She is therefore calling on Liberians to Support their Local Surfers as they compete on home Waves in such international contests.

Surfing is a surface water sport in which an individual, a surfer (or two in tandem surfing), uses a board to ride on the forward section, or face, of a moving wave of water, which usually carries the surfer towards the shore. Waves suitable for surfing are primarily found on ocean shores, but can also be found in standing waves in the open ocean, in lakes, in rivers in the form of a tidal bore, or in wave pools.

The term surfing refers to a person riding a wave using a board, regardless of the stance. There are several types of boards. The Moche of Peru would often surf on reed craft, while the native peoples of the Pacific surfed waves on alaia, paipo, and other such watercraft. Ancient cultures often surfed on their belly and knees, while the modern-day definition of surfing most often refers to a surfer riding a wave standing on a surfboard; this is also referred to as stand-up surfing.

Another prominent form of surfing is bodyboarding, where a surfer rides the wave on a bodyboard, either lying on their belly, drop knee (one foot and one knee on the board), or sometimes even standing up on a bodyboard. Other types of surfing include knee boarding, surf matting (riding inflatable mats) and using foils. Body surfing, in which the wave is caught and ridden using the surfer’s own body rather than a board, is very common and is considered by some surfers to be the purest form of surfing.

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Uganda has rolled out a nationwide yellow fever vaccination campaign to help safeguard its population against the mosquito-borne disease that has long posed a threat.

By the end of April, Ugandan authorities had vaccinated 12.2 million of the 14 million people targeted, said Dr. Michael Baganizi, an official in charge of immunization at the health ministry.

Uganda will now require everyone traveling to and from the country to have a yellow fever vaccination card as an international health regulation, Baganizi said.

Ugandan authorities hope the requirement will compel more people to get the yellow fever shot amid a general atmosphere of vaccine hesitancy that worries healthcare providers in the East African nation.

The single-dose vaccine has been offered free of charge to Ugandans between the ages of 1 and 60. Vaccination centers in the capital, Kampala, and elsewhere included schools, universities, hospitals and local government units.

Before this, Ugandans usually paid to get the yellow fever shot at private clinics, for the equivalent of $27.

Uganda, with 45 million people, is one of 27 countries on the African continent classified as at high risk for yellow fever outbreaks. According to the World Health Organization, there are about 200,000 cases and 30,000 deaths globally each year from the disease.

Extreme weather events have hit parts of Africa relentlessly in the last three years, with tropical storms, floods and drought causing crises of hunger and displacement. They leave another deadly threat behind them: some of the continent's worst outbreaks of cholera. In southern and East Africa, more than 6,000 people have died and nearly 350,000 cases have been reported since a series of cholera outbreaks began in late 2021. (AP Photo/Patrick Ngugi, File)

Uganda’s most recent outbreak was reported earlier this year in the central districts of Buikwe and Buvuma.

Yellow fever is caused by a virus transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes. The majority of infections are asymptomatic. Symptoms can include fever, muscle pain, headache, loss of appetite and nausea or vomiting, according to the WHO.

Uganda’s vaccination initiative is part of a global strategy launched in 2017 by the WHO and partners such as the U.N. children’s agency to eliminate yellow fever by 2026. The goal is to protect almost one billion people in Africa and the Americas.

A midterm evaluation of that strategy, whose results were published last year, found that 185 million people in high-risk African countries had been vaccinated by August 2022.

In Uganda, most people get the yellow fever shot when they are traveling to countries such as South Africa that demand proof of vaccination on arrival.

James Odite, a nurse working at a private hospital which has been designated as a vaccination center in a suburb of the capital, Kampala, told the AP that hundreds of doses remained unused after the yellow fever vaccination campaign closed. They will be used in a future mass campaign.

Among the issues raised by vaccine-hesitant people was the question of whether “the government wants to give them expired vaccines,” Odite said.

Baganizi, the immunization official, said Uganda’s government has invested in community “sensitization” sessions during which officials tell people that vaccines save lives.
