Cape Leveque Tours
Cape leveque day tours from broome, pristine and beautiful – why a trip to cape leveque is worth the effort.
Located at the very northernmost tip of the Dampier Peninsula in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, a Cape Leveque tour will take you out to a very remote and isolated region . For some the journey there may seem daunting, being 240 km (150 miles) north of Broome, along not the easiest driving conditions where a 4WD vehicle is certainly recommended, if not essential. Nonetheless, the pristine white sandy beaches and succulent red cliffs experienced on a Cape Leveque tour are attracting an increasing number of visitors each year. The spectacular landscape will no doubt leave you breathless and make you realise that making this trip to paradise was well worth the effort.

Getting To Cape Leveque

Cape Leveque is located on the northern tip of the Dampier Peninsula . When undertaking a Broome to Cape Leveque tour you can expect a longer than 200 km journey along the Cape Leveque Road to this hidden gem, with the journey being both unique and completely isolated, so make sure that you are prepared for potentially tough driving conditions. The majority of the journey is made up of unsealed roads, and the scenery is that of sand and desert.
Although this may not sound inspiring, the end definitely justifies the means. It is hardly surprising that this beautiful location is relatively untouched due to its remote location and the necessity of needing a 4WD to make the 3 hour journey up from Broome along the rough roads which can be difficult to traverse at times – although this all adds to the adventure!
CAPE LEVEQUE TOURS EXPERIENCE THE BEAUTY WITHOUT THE STRESS
Although for many people the journey to Cape Leveque would be considered as all part of the adventure, we understand that not everyone will be enthralled by the idea of a difficult or challenging drive when they are on holiday
Although for many people the journey to Cape Leveque would be considered as all part of the adventure, we understand that not everyone will be enthralled by the idea of a difficult or challenging drive when they are on holiday and hoping to relax in a beautiful location. Should you wish to see the beautiful Cape Leveque but not feel confident at traversing the difficult roads, there is no need to miss out as there are plenty of Cape Leveque tours to cater to different parties.
There are full day 4WD adventures which depart and return from Broome, which also include swimming in the perfect water that surrounds this peninsula. Take a wander down the coastline to enjoy the endless views and bask in the tranquil atmosphere knowing that you are miles from civilisation. Alternatively, for those looking for a less bumpy journey, you can opt to take a return flight from Broome and see the coast from the sky, before landing locally to enjoy the area for the day. As you depart, enjoy watching the cliffs change colour as the sun begins to set on one of the best views, making this one of the days you’ll definitely remember from your trip.

One of the other activities to indulge yourself in whilst on your Cape Leveque tour would be to take a visit to beagle bay aboriginal community, established in the 1890’s this place is well known for the aboriginal children of the infamous stolen generation.
One of the other activities to indulge yourself in whilst on your Cape Leveque tour would be to take a visit to beagle bay aboriginal community, established in the 1890’s this place is well known for the aboriginal children of the infamous stolen generation. As with Broome, Cape Leveque is renowned for its pearls and the cygnet bay pearl farm is a great experience on the tours as you’ll learn all about the history of the pearling industry and how it has changed over the years.
On the theme of pearls, you’ll also get to experience a literal pearl shell altar which is located at the famous sacred heart church which was built as early as 1918. Alternatively, if you love wildlife, there is no doubt that Cape Leveque is a wonderful place for you to visit with nature and wildlife in abundance. The coasts of Cape Leveque are regularly frequented by wild turtles and a multitude of sea birds which nest on the shores and collect sea food off the exposed rocks during the low tides. Wonderfully, whales often visit the area, resting and playing among the sheltered islands which are scattered about the Dampier Peninsula, and even come to waters to give birth, so you may be lucky enough to spot a mother with her calf.

Cape Leveque , the top attraction of the region, is a natural wonder known for its vibrant red cliffs and traditional Aboriginal heritage. For those who once thought of Cape Leveque as an inaccessible destination, we have good news! The road from Broome up Dampier Peninsula is now fully sealed , so pack your camping gear and start planning a Dampier Peninsula road trip!
About Dampier Peninsula & Cape Leveque
Cape Leveque is the main attraction of the Dampier Peninsula. The cape is famous for its pristine coast and wilderness. The local Indigenous people call the peninsula Ardi , meaning “northeast. ” It’s an area that carries rich traditional history and one that has been sparsely inhabited with small remote communities for centuries.
The beaches are unspoiled, trees full and natural, and wildlife is abundant . At one point, the peninsula was known as a far-off place with limited road access. Now, thanks to the newly sealed road, it’s an off-the-beaten-path destination for nature and culture.

Where Is The Dampier Peninsula?
The Dampier Peninsula is located in northwest Australia along the coast of the Kimberley region in Western Australia . It’s about 200 km north of Broome and surrounded by the beautiful Indian Ocean.
How To Get There
Thanks to recent improvements, the main road up the Dampier Peninsula from Broome to Cape Leveque is now fully sealed . There are still plenty of off-shoots that require a high clearance 4WD vehicle, but the main route is now accessible by any vehicle.
To get to Cape Leveque, follow Broome Road for 20 km before hitting the turn-off for Broome-Cape Leveque Road. The sealed all-weather road goes all the way to Cape Leveque and takes about 2.5 hours. Keep in mind that if you want to explore more of the unique landscape, you’ll need 4WD to reach places like Pender Bay and Middle Lagoon.
As far as road conditions go, we found the ride to be pretty smooth, but it still required careful driving. There are no overtaking lanes, and weather can be a big factor. Check out the Road Safety Commission’s Guide to a Safe Drive before embarking on your trip.
Be prepared for weather extremes in the Kimberley, particularly after the 2023 floods; delays can happen, so always have fresh water, food, and spare tires on hand. Stay safe!
Main Attractions & Things To Do In Dampier Peninsula
Cape leveque.
On the northern tip of the Dampier Peninsula, Cape Leveque is the main draw for most visitors making this extraordinary trip. It’s no surprise that the gorgeous untouched beaches and astonishing red cliffs make a visit here a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The contrast between the vibrant cliffs, white sandy beach, and turquoise water is a feast for the eyes.
Swimming and snorkelling are popular things to do in Cape Leveque. The cape is also home to a lighthouse and is a good spot for whale watching (during the season). Cape Leveque fishing is world-class, and locals invite you to explore the region and uncover its rich Aboriginal history.
Kooljaman At Cape Leveque
Kooljaman is a remote wilderness camp owned by local Indigenous Bardi Jawi communities. It’s famed for its stunning scenery and eco-conscious beachfront campground . The award-winning place has accolades in Indigenous Tourism, Eco-Tourism, Unique Accommodation and Cultural Tourism. You can easily spend the day combing the beach before having dinner at Raugi’s Restaurant and catching the glorious sunset over the bay .
Unfortunately, this place is closed now due to deteriorating infrastructure and the inability to cover redevelopment costs. Work on the Kooljaman Access Road, which was initially set to finish in September 2023, is on hold. The resort is closed, and the duration of closure remains uncertain. For the latest info on open communities and campgrounds, check with the Broome Visitor Centre here .
Brian’s Tagalong Tour
No trip to Kooljaman is complete without joining a cultural tour with unforgettable Bardi tour guide, Brian Lee. Brian’s Tagalong Tours of Hunter Creek sheds insight into traditional fishing and crabbing and culminates in a bush tucker lunch under the trees, then enjoy the scenic tours to Sunday Island. It’s the absolute best way to experience the Kimberley region from a local’s perspective.
Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm
Located on the eastern side of the Dampier Peninsula, Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm is an icon of Australia’s pearling industry . The bay’s tidal creeks and sandy banks are prime oyster territory along with the coast’s many points. Rocky shores line the bay, and the views of nearby islands are spectacular.
The farm operates several boat tours, allowing visitors to explore the beauty of the Dampier Peninsula north of Broome and see Cable Beach light up in a vibrant display of colours from the water. We recommend their Giant Whirlpool Tidal Boat tour to experience the massive tides or journey to the unique waterfall reef. You can also dine at the Cygnet Bay Restaurant and have a taste of pearl meat or even harvest one in this Behind-the-Scenes Tour & Live Harvest !
Ardyaloon – One Arm Point
Immerse yourself in local Aboriginal communities in the remote town of Ardyaloon or One Arm Point. From here, you can watch the giant tides sweep over the Kimberley islands and explore a Trochus Shells hatchery . The beaches are completely unspoiled, and the fishing is outstanding. The road is 4WD only, but the vibrant community is well worth a visit.
The Ardyaloon Hatchery Road (One Arm Point) construction and sealing were mostly finished in May 2023, but the final seal comes later this year. If you’re planning a 2024 visit, ensure the road’s fully open before heading to One Arm Point. Check for updates here .
The Aboriginal Community of Lombadina welcomes visitors to explore their traditions and amazing locations on Thomas Bay. Soak in the beauty of white sand beaches and try your luck at spotting humpback whales in the distance. The Community hosts immersive tours to try your hand at mud crabbing, kayaking, or traditional fishing .
As of May 2023, the Lombadina community is open seven days a week, including weekends from 9 am to 2 pm. If you plan to book a tour, remember to do it at least four days in advance to support the local communities.
Follow an unsealed road north of Beagle Bay, and you’ll arrive at Pender Bay, a hotspot for humpback whales and remote camping. Explore the 4WD tracks and incredible beaches surrounding this rugged stretch of coast. Stay at Whale Song Campground, and be sure to stop into Kimberley Wild Gubinge to taste a superfood plum unique to Australia.
Middle Lagoon
On the same 4WD track from Beagle Bay to Pender Bay, you’ll find Middle Lagoon, another stop for the picturesque wilderness . Spend the day relaxing on the beach or dropping a line in the water. Camping and limited accommodation options are available at the low-impact coastal camp Nature’s Hideaway .
James Price Point
A stunning headland on the Kimberley coast, James Price Point is a local favourite for swimming and wild camping. Besides its astounding beauty, the area also has large cultural significance for Indigenous Communities. Walk the beaches, observe the wildlife, and keep your eyes peeled for dinosaur footprints in the intertidal zones!
James Price Point offers one of the most picturesque FREE wild campgrounds in all of Australia. Camping spots are scattered all along the point and are sprawled between the ocean and the stark red cliffs. You must be completely self-sufficient to camp here, as there are no facilities and no trees/bushes, so a portable loo is a must!
Stop into the Community of Beagle Bay to visit the home of the Nyul Nyul people. The Community’s famous Sacred Heart Church features a beautiful building with an altar made from shells . It’s entirely handmade and adorned with white mother-of-pearl shells.

Where To Stay: Cape Leveque Camping And Dampier Peninsula Accommodation
Waking up to sweeping views of the red cliffs and sparkling ocean is what the Dampier Peninsula is all about. Keep in mind that Cape Leveque accommodation is limited, so be sure to plan ahead.
Gumbanan Wilderness Retreat
Gumbanan Wilderness Retreat is located at the eastern tip of the peninsula near One Arm Point and is a great wilderness bush camp . We stayed here for a couple of nights during our visit and enjoyed the amazing ocean views and rugged landscape. Gumbanan offers basic campsites with toilet/shower facilities. Unfortunately, this gem is closed for the season from August 2023 until further notice.
Spending the night at a pearl farm is a pretty cool way to experience the coastal Kimberley region. Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm offers visitors 39 remote self-sufficient accommodations ranging from campsites, caravan sites, to safari tents, it is Australia’s oldest fully operational public pearl farm! Each site comes with power and water, and there is a fully functional amenities block with hot and cold water. It features a swimming pool, various tours, and the Cygnet Bay Bistro serving dishes inspired by seasonal produce and has unique offerings like pearl meat. For the full experience, splash out on a heritage-listed Pealer’s shack. You’ll get a feel for how divers lived in the early days of Australia’s pearling industry.
Wild Camping At James Price Point
James Price Point, or Waldamany, is a stunning free campsite located about 1 hour north of Broome. Picture a white sandy beach surrounded by rocky red cliffs where 4WD fully self-contained vehicles can spend the night above the sea. The site is beautiful but can get very windy, so prepare for rugged, wild camping. Also, note that there is a 3-day limit on camping and no facilities.

I tried to visit Dampier peninsular in may 2022 but found that after driving the 200 km road that local people had blocked the road to Cape Leveque and Beagle Bay so we saw nothing but shrubs along the way We had visited before and knew of its beauty

This full day adventure (approx. 12 hours) to Cape Leveque, takes you through Dampier Land to enjoy the opportunity of meeting several Indigenous communities, visit the Aquaculture Hatchery and the spectacular pearl shell altar at Beagle Bay. Begin your culturally rewarding adventure by departing Broome at approximately 6:00 am (hotel pick up), journeying through magnificent 'Dampier Land’ to the Dampier Peninsula. The unique Kimberley landscape unfurls before you as you cross the principally Indigenous owned land of fiery red sands and rock carvings, up the 4WD track toward the peninsula, with guided commentary about the area's fascinating history. Your first stop is for morning tea at the Beagle Bay Aboriginal Community. You will visit the spectacular pearl shell altar at the Beagle Bay Church. Mother of pearl, cowrie, olive and volute shells decorate the interior walls of the church, with mother of pearl the predominant shell used to adorn the main altar. Opercula – a rare stone taken from shellfish – are inlaid into the side altars. Much of the decoration are tribal symbols of the Nimanborr, Njul Njul and Bard people of the area, while others are Christian symbols representing a lamb, a fish and a shepherd's crook. Completed in 1917, it is one of the Kimberley's most historic landmarks. From Beagle Bay, you will travel north to the remote One Arm Point Community, with spectacular views of Buccaneer Archipelago. Observe the unique tidal flows of the Kimberley and visit the Community’s aquaculture hatchery, with its collection of reef fish and trochus shells. After a delightful picnic lunch, the afternoon is yours, at scenic Cape Leveque (Kooljaman). Snorkel, swim, or sunbathe on the pristine beaches, take a walk on the glistening sands, or just relax and enjoy the peace and calm of the spectacular coastline. After departing Cape Leveque mid-afternoon, you will journey south for afternoon tea. From Broome to Cape Leveque The Dampier Peninsula
The trip from Broome to Cape Leveque traverses the whole Dampier Peninsula north of Broome.
Most people drive straight through to Kooljaman Resort .
However, Kooljaman is not the only place worth stopping at...
The whole Dampier Peninsula is still an untouched wilderness, surrounded by an amazing coastline and untainted by the usual mass tourism ventures. Instead there are several Aboriginal communities that welcome interested visitors and offer accommodation, cultural tours, fishing and a glimpse into their traditional lifestyle.
They are happy to share their knowledge about bush foods and medicines, traditional hunting and fishing techniques and their special relationship with their land and the ocean.
Getting from Broome to Cape Leveque/Kooljaman
The distance from Broome to Cape Leveque—the tip of the Dampier Peninsula—is 206 km .
The second part of this drive has been sealed for quite a few years now, the first part is in the process of being sealed. (Work on that started in May 2018 and is expected to take 3-4 years.) The currently remaining unsealed part as well as all the side tracks are as sandy and corrugated as ever . Which means that you still need a 4WD to make the trip, even if you do not plan to visit any of the places on the way.
The drive from Broome to Cape Leveque takes about two and a half to three hours . The turn-off to the Cape Leveque Road is only a few kilometres out of Broome and the unsealed section can be very corrugated. Once you reach the Aboriginal owned country further north the sealed roads are excellent.
You will be travelling across Aboriginal land . Respect the culture and privacy of the people that live here. That means observe the no entry signs on private roads! They protect law grounds, burial sites and other areas of traditional significance.
If you don't have a car and don't want to rent one you can join a Cape Leveque tour from Broome.
Cape Leveque also has a small airport and you can get there via a scenic flight from Broome or Derby . Many operators offer packages for day and overnight trips.
Places To Visit Between Broome And Kooljaman
If you are self driving and have some time then you can visit some more places.
Beagle Bay is the first Aboriginal community that you will pass. There is no accommodation here but it's worth to call in to have a look at the famous Sacred Heart Church and its beautiful altar decorated with mother-of-pearl shell.
Middle Lagoon is a quiet holiday resort popular with locals. Great fishing, a shallow lagoon safe for swimming, camping, beach shelters, breezy self contained log cabins... It's a gorgeous place. Some travellers even prefer it over Kooljaman.
Lombadina is another well known Aboriginal community further north. This was the first community on the peninsula to venture into tourism, over 15 years ago now. Their acommodation and tours are well established and their beach may be the most stunning on the whole peninsula.
"The Aboriginal community at Lombadina has the most beautiful bay/beach I have ever seen. I think it may have the name Thomas Bay. It is definitely a must visit if you are in the area." -- Reader Jane from Sydney
The photo below shows their church, an ingenious structure built from bush timbers and corrugated iron.
One Arm Point (also known as Ardyaloon) is a few kilometres beyond Kooljaman and is also a great place to stop. You can tour the aquaculture hatchery which is breeding juvenile trochus shells, or you can take part in the boat or fishing tours offered.
The above are only the longest established and most well known places. There are many more. Some have only opened in the last few years, some have been there for a long time but been kept secret by the locals.
There is Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, and Bully's Place, the Whalesong Cafe, many small campgrounds to stay at, and many more Aboriginals communities that you can visit. For some of those you need to arrange your visit beforehand. ( Destination Kimberley has the details you need for that.)
Keep in mind that many of those communities are only just starting out in tourism and are not necessarily familiar with the needs of the average tourist. Bring an open mind and be willing to adapt and learn.
But most of all, bring enough time!

Cape Leveque is hidden out of the way, and its hard to get there, but once you arrive and see the pristine white beaches and the golden red cliffs, you’ll understand why you are one of the lucky people, and you’ll be glad you made the trip.
A four wheel drive vehicle is strongly recommended for travel and the road is not suitable for caravans. You will need to allow three and a half hours for the drive from Broome to Cape Leveque and during the summer wet season the road will sometimes be closed to traffic.
There is excellent swimming, fishing and snorkelling. Fly/drive tours, scenic flights, four wheel drive day tours and overnight tours are available from Broome. Aboriginal bushtucker, tag-a-long and mud-crabbing tours available. Charter boats offer full and half day fishing, and scenic tours to Sunday Island.
Iconic Cape Leveque
Lying at the end of Dampier Peninsula about 200kms north of Broome, the remote iconic Cape Leveque makes for a refreshing alternative to the Kimberley’s more visited coastal destinations. It resides at the head of this famous peninsula and is best known for its bright red sandstone cliffs and its pure waters. You’ll need a four-wheel drive to get here.
The modus operandi here is all about long walks along cliffs and beaches and taking in the reef. You can snorkel the azure waters or jump aboard the glass-bottom boat for a look at the brightly coloured fishes. July to October time even has humpback whales prowling the waters.
The Aboriginal heritage of Cape Leveque dates back some 7,000 years and they still reside here, many working in the tourist trade, operating guided walks and running the eco resort. The best way to appreciate the area is by taking a bush tucker tour with an Aboriginal guide. They teach you how to make a spear for fishing, after which you get to barbecue your catch.
Accommodation is chiefly at the Kooljaman Cape Leveque, which is a fancy eco resort for this remote area. It’s owned by local Aboriginal communities and is located near the airport while overlooking the sea from its expansive grounds. Alternatively, many visitors to the cape simply come here on a daytrip while staying at a Broome hotel.
It is a three- to four-hour drive from Broome along the Beagle Bay-Broome and Leveque roads. The surface is typically a combination of earth and a burgeoning covering of tarmac. It will eventually be fully sealed, though it remains bumpy so taking your time is recommended. It takes roughly double the time from Derby to get here, going via the Mount Jowlaenga Road, but you can loop back to Broome.
Please respect the land, culture and privacy of the local Aboriginal people. Drive slowly when entering communities and do not wander uninvited into residential areas. No permit is required to drive to Cape Leveque, though entry fees do apply if not staying overnight.

More to Know
Permits & Fuel
Permits are not required to travel on Cape Leveque Road. However, a small access fee applies to the communities of Beagle Bay, Lombadina and One Arm Point, payable at the community offices.
Fuel may be purchased at One Arm Point, Djarindjin and One Arm Point. We recommend that travellers check with Broome Visitor Centre for up to date information on community and campground openings prior to travelling.
When to Visit
The best time to experience the Dampier Peninsula is during the Dry Season (May-October). During the Wet Season (Nov-Apr) the Cape Leveque Road may experience closures due to weather conditions, and facilities on the Peninsula are also limited. Prior to travelling, check road conditions and closures with the Broome Visitor Centre.

Cygnet Bay has a restaurant on-site; opening times may vary seasonally. At Ardyaloon and Beagle Bay you'll find well-stocked stores.
Locally made crafts and souvenirs may be purchased at Lombadina and the Ardyaloon Hatchery, and Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm where you'll also find elegant jewellery featuring locally grown pearls.
