Die Lit: Photographing Playboi Carti's Punk-Inspired Album Cover

Rap meets punk in the Nick Walker-photographed cover image.

Playboi Carti 's new album, Die Lit , is all about capturing a mood.

Throughout the 19-song project, Carti and Pi'erre Bourne are guided by feeling more than anything. With a minimalist approach to songwriting, Die Lit favors woozy basslines and chirping ad-lib over complex lyrical themes. It's a raw, stripped down album that takes the traditional idea of hip-hop and stretches it new directions.

An album like Die Lit  needed a perfect cover to set the right visual tone. So Carti and his team reached out to photographer Nick Walker , who has a diverse background shooting videos and photos for rock, rap, and R&B artists like FKA Twigs, Future, Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé, Mac DeMarco, Hanni El Khatib, Trash Talk, Rae Sremmurd, and Freddie Gibbs.

The concept of the cover was based around a reference photo of an old punk rock show found by Midnight Studios art director  Shane Gonzales . "So many of these hip-hop shows now have that energy from punk shows back in the day," Walker says. "Carti's music really goes against the grain, too, just like punk used to do back in the day. He's into a bunch of different music and things like that, so it was a really easy pairing."

"I grew up listening to a lot of punk rock and going to a lot of punk rock shows, so I knew I could execute it in an authentic way," Walker adds. So he played punk music "really fuckin' loud" as Carti hurled himself into the air until they had the perfect image to match the Die Lit title. Walker explains that he always prefers his shoots to have a loose energy and gravitates towards an "unhinged" style. In other words, he was the perfect match for Carti.

Continue for our interview with Walker and read the full story behind the Die Lit cover.

How did you get linked up with Carti’s team for this?

I've been working with Interscope for over ten years. They kind of gave me my start into my first proper big photography jobs. They're family. So I got linked up with Carti's team and I went out to New York to meet him and catch a vibe. We got on really well and they needed to shoot the cover.

They had a reference image of a punk show. I grew up listening to a lot of punk rock and going to a lot of punk rock shows, so I knew I could execute it in an authentic way. And I also knew how to execute it from a workflow perspective. I came home on Sunday, got the email on Monday, and they asked if we could do it on Thursday. So we made it happen. Shane Gonzalez from Midnight Studios was the one who helped with creative, in terms of finding that photo. He came on to help style it. It was a really great team.

When you met with Carti, did he tell you what he was going for?

Yeah, we talked about the project and the energy he was going for. He's got a lot of insight, and he's one of those really great artists to work with who know what they want. So I just had to figure out how to achieve it and make it all work.

{ "id": 133548405 } Anybody who's been to a Carti show or a really lit show should be able to recognize the feeling and relate to the image.

So the main mood you were going for was just that punk energy?

Yeah. It was punk. So many of these hip-hop shows now have that energy from punk shows back in the day. Carti's music really goes against the grain, too, just like punk used to do back in the day. He's into a bunch of different music and things like that, so it was a really easy pairing.

Where did you guys shoot it?

We shot it at this great photo studio at Highland Park called The Forge. One of the studios has great woodwork. I knew it needed to be dark and we had to create the atmosphere of a show, so that's what we did. We hung up some black duvetyne to hide some of the interior of the studio and played music really fuckin' loud. Then we kind of let the offense run itself, you know?

Carti is in a really interesting pose. How’d you guys pull that off?

Yeah, I'd shoot a few photos. Then we'd see, like, damn, it looks better when his legs are extended or his body is more twisted or whatever. We really didn't shoot that many, though. Once we got that one, it just kind of felt like the one.

This photo bridges the worlds of rock and rap in a really natural, effortless way. I was looking through your other work and it seems you’re just as comfortable shooting someone like as Hanni El Khatib or Dan Auerbach. Do you think that helped with this project?

Yeah, definitely. It's interesting because even in high school I was friends with a lot of different people. I've always liked to understand everyone's scene and not just walk into someone's scene and not know anything about it. I think it just relates to who I am, and that's why I'm able to shoot different people in different genres. I'm also able to fit artists in the context of a different genre that doesn't necessarily fit with them, but do it in a way that makes sense for them. You know, with a lot of these musicians, you forget that they love all kinds of music, too. You can talk to Hanni El Khatib about every current rapper out right now. And every old one, too. I think it's really just about listening to people and giving respect to each genre in its own way. I'm there to help connect the dots.

Do your own musical tastes reflect what your portfolio looks like? Are you all over the place? Or what are you usually listening to?

Yeah, I'm all over the place. I hate it when people say, "I love everything," but I really do. If anyone's doing something really well, I gravitate to it. I love rap, I love rock, I love electronic, I love even poppy-er stuff, too. If it's a banger, it's a banger, you know? I don't discriminate. But as far as my portfolio goes, it's tough not to have a lot of rap up these days, because it's so big and there's a lot of clientele. I try to keep the portfolio cohesive, stylistically, but have lots of different things. There's so much out there to enjoy in the world, so why limit yourself to one thing?

When I look at this photo, I get a raw, powerful, energetic feeling. Do you naturally gravitate towards those types of images?

Yeah, "unhinged" to me is everything I like in anything creative. It doesn't need to be ratchet or anything, it just needs to be a little unhinged. If there's a looseness to a shoot, it will allow something to grow organically from the situation and maybe something unexpected will happen. That could be imagery, music, or even a conversation. I still love a beautifully composed image, but for me there's got to be something a little unhinged. I always like to put people in different light. Sometimes that's an actual physical light. Like, if I have a celebrity I'm going to shoot, I might have their face full in darkness, which could be something new for them. Or just put them in a different light in, like, a new way to look at them. I'll put them in a new environment or something that you typically wouldn't see.

{ "id": 133548406 } he main thing I drew inspiration from is my past. I've never done a flip off a stage, but I've climbed 30 feet up onto a rafter and jumped off before. I've been in a ton of pits.

I saw in the comments, lots of people are saying they think that’s Dave Grohl in the photo. It doesn’t totally look like him to me, but I’ve gotta ask… is it?

[Laughs] . No, but that would be sick if it was. That would be hilarious.

What were your main influences or reference points for this image?

Shane had the first image from the old punk show, and that was really the only image. The main thing I drew inspiration from is my past. I've never done a flip off a stage, but I've climbed 30 feet up onto a rafter and jumped off before. I've been in a ton of pits. It was important for me to get a good assortment of people in that pit that really would be there. I used to be 5'8'' and 132 pounds and I would get bounced around in there. So it was like, it can't just be a bunch of big dudes in there, we need to have some smaller people in there, too. We need to have all different sorts of people. I went to a lot of shows growing up, so I just thought if I could recreate that, then I'm good.

You said you were playing music really loud at the shoot. Was it Carti's music or punk or what was the vibe?

It was mostly punk. Old and new. Also, shout out to everybody who showed up and did it because they really went ham. That's tiring, man. They really gave it their all.

You mentioned the shot was styled by Shane Gonzalez. How collaborative was the project and what was his involvement?

Yeah, it was cool. This was my first time working with Shane and honestly we just clicked really easily. He does everything really well and I take pride in my work, too. When you get to work with another person who cares as much about what they're doing as you do about what you're doing, it's really easy. He had a relationship with Carti before this, so it was great to be working with someone who was familiar with him and already had a working relationship. Again, I feel like it was a really great team that was put together. Honestly, it was all super smooth. There are so many jobs where nothing falls into place and you're constantly trying to do damage control to get back on track. This was one where everything fell into place, though.

When you look at the final cover, what comes to mind for you?

I relate to it. I've been there. Anybody who's been to a Carti show or a really lit show should be able to recognize the feeling and relate to the image.

We've mainly talked about your music-related work, but what are some of the other things you've worked on?

Yeah, I like doing documentary stuff a lot. I recently did a project that I'm really proud of called "The Baltimore Dance Project" with FKA Twigs. There are probably like five documentary ideas that I'm always trying to do. I'm going to be going out to the Atacama Desert in Chile in August to work on a potential nature documentary. And commercial work, too. I'm just dabbling in it all. At the end of the day, I just like to shoot, whether that's a still image or a video. If the opportunity is available and I have the time, I'll just head out somewhere and take pictures without even knowing the end goal for it. I just know the inspiration is there so I've got to see it out.

How did you originally get into photography and videography in the first place?

I grew up out here in LA in the San Fernando Valley. My dad did concrete and my mom did banking, so there was really no kind of blueprint into the creative field, but I always loved taking pictures. I would get disposable cameras and get them printed and give them to my mom or whatever. I was always hanging those pictures up and putting them on my wall. At the time, I didn't really think anything of it, but in hindsight now, I was obviously very attracted to imagery. But back then I thought if you were a photographer it just meant you sold prints down at Venice Beach and you were a hippy. I knew that wasn't for me, so I just chugged along.

I took a TV production course my senior year in high school, where we got to edit stuff. Also, in hindsight, with my dad being in construction, it was really cool for me to see all my work pay out into a tangible product. After learning very minimally how to edit, it was cool to be like, "Yo, I did this, and we can watch it right now." That was really fulfilling for me.

{ "id": 133548408 } I always want to put some kind of humanizing quality into anything that I do.

I went to junior college for two years in San Diego, then I transferred to a school in New York City called Pace University and I majored in business. When I got out there, my mom had a client at her bank who owned a photo studio in New York and she was like, "My son's out there and he's into creative things and he doesn't really know what to do," or whatever. So he got me a job where I did anything and everything. I picked up props, cleaned the floors, whatever. I was on set one day around the time digital photography had just started. It was all film and polaroids at the time. I saw a polaroid and I was like, "What? Holy shit, this is the finished product? This looks nothing like what I'm looking at right now." So I told the studio manager I really wanted to get on set and start learning.

Long story short, that company went bankrupt. When I was leaving, there were a bunch of photographers outside and they asked if I was looking for work and offered me a job assisting. I was really fortunate to have this guy Jessie Winter hit me up and take me under his wing. That was basically my last year of business school. I started learning about lighting and stuff like that through him. I owe him a lot for being willing to do that. When I graduated, I was like, "Okay, cool, I'll try this freelance thing out here in New York." So I was getting assisting gigs for about a year and a half. Eventually I went broke and came home. Fortunately, home is LA, and I was able to get in the photo industry out here and link up with some really great photographers.

The plan back then was to become a big photographer and diversify. You'd start directing music videos and eventually commercials, then maybe features if you wanted to. But as the world and technology changed, these opportunities popped up for me to do videos for photographers I was working for. So I started doing video, which gave me even more opportunities. I was able to start doing photography full time, and then I was able to get a little more particular about the projects I wanted to take on. And that kind of leads us up to here.

I noticed you've worked with a lot of musicians. How did you head down that path?

I've always been super passionate about music. You know, when you start off, you kind of want to shoot everything. You don't want to get pigeonholed. You don't want to be pigeonholed as "this guy who does this," because you can do so many other things. But music kept coming back into my orbit of opportunity, until eventually I was like, yeah, it makes sense. When I listen to music, I see things. Not like a schizophrenic. [Laughs]. But like, I can imagine certain imagery for things. So I thought, I shouldn't fight this. I should just own it. I still like to shoot a lot of different things, but I have a lot of friends who are musicians and who are in that scene, so it just made sense.

die lit tour dates

Are you mainly doing photography or videography these days? What's the split?

Last year, I primarily just directed. But before, I would say it was like 75% photography and 25% directing. Last year, for whatever reason, directing just took over more. This year it's been about 50/50. I'm just always super grateful. I never thought this was a shoe-in for me. Every day that I wake up and I get to go take a picture or direct a video or whatever else, I'm just super grateful. So I'll just let life take me where it takes me. If I end up doing more videos, great, then I'll do more personal photography projects. And vice versa. My whole thing is I just like to do the work. I don't want to waste time thinking about what I should be doing more or less of. I just kind of work from the gut. If I have something that I want to do that's a still image, then I'll go do it. And if I have something I want to do that's a video, then I'll go do it.

{ "id": 133548409 } I like offbeat things that people don't necessarily think are interesting until you put some light on them.

Would you say there's a common thread that runs through all the things you do? Is there anything that ties it all together?

The goal for me as an image maker is to keep things cohesive. So when you do see something you might be able to say, "Oh, damn, that looks like maybe Nick Walker did it." But yeah, I like offbeat things that people don't necessarily think are interesting until you put some light on them. I like to find the things that maybe aren't as obvious to think about right away.

What I'm really learning about myself is that I always want to put some kind of humanizing quality into anything that I do—whether that's doing something that you're quote-unquote "not supposed to do" or doing it "the right way." I try to bring a humanizing quality to the images so that we can all relate to them. Or maybe not everyone can relate, but at least one person will be like, "Oh damn, I get this."

Is there anything coming up that readers can look forward to from you? Or is there a place they can keep up with you on future work?

Yeah, there's a bunch of stuff in the pipeline from some artists I can't totally talk about. A finished project will be releasing really soon. I wish I could say more, but you can keep up on my Instagram. I'm not that good about keeping it up to date, because I'd rather be busy than doing that, but it's @nickwalkerstudio . And my website .

May 16, 2018

Being a great rapper has never been a prerequisite for making great rap music, but few rappers have ever tested that premise quite as aggressively as Playboi Carti . On his self-titled 2017 debut , the twitchy Atlanta rapper compensated for his shortcomings as a lyricist with vision and spirit, bouncing his sticky ad-libs off of gloopy, gummy beats that played out with the insane logic of a “Double Dare” obstacle course. “Damn, my shit so radical,” Carti bragged, and it truly was. Yet, amazingly, that project sounds almost conservative compared to Die Lit , a 57-minute sugar high that’s even wilder, more disorienting, and more perversely infectious than its predecessor.

Atlanta swag-rap pioneers Travis Porter and Rich Kidz paved the way for Carti’s giddy style, but even they never took it to such delirious extremes. Die Lit is all cream filling, no Oreo. It’s letting a 4-year-old pour his own salad dressing then watching as he absolutely floods his plate with Hidden Valley Ranch. It’s those levels of Mario where the pipes and clouds spew so many coins and one-ups at you that you wonder why you spent all those other levels collecting them one by one. This is music that fundamentally recalibrates the brain’s reward centers.

Once again, the primary architect behind these addictive fragmented tones is producer Pi’erre Bourne , working from a reserve of what sound like hacked Gameboys, busted subwoofers, and chopped and screwed snippets of Ratatat records. Bourne is a one man Acme Corporation assembly line, and in Carti he’s found the perfect foil for his mischief, a fellow iconoclast similarly willing to test the boundaries between catchy and obnoxious. The two have some of the most quixotic chemistry of any producer/rapper combo since Zaytoven and Gucci Mane disrupted Atlanta’s rap scene more than a decade ago.

Where Carti’s full-length last year was technically a mixtape, Die Lit is being marketed as his official debut, which is often when commercial considerations set in and the fun ends. But while the album is loaded with guest features, including ones from Travis Scott and Nicki Minaj , they never upset its surrealist vision. Even “Fell in Luv (feat. Bryson Tiller )” isn’t as cynical as title threatens; it’s just a typically loopy Playboi Carti song with a Bryson Tiller verse that’s mixed like somebody tried to erase it then gave up. With its victorious pianos, the Lil Uzi Vert -assisted triumph anthem “ Shoota ” is the album’s one obvious concession to radio’s ideal of tunefulness, but it’s an absolute stunner of a track, and it also works as a window to the world outside of Bourne’s studio, highlighting just how odd and malformed all the beats around it are.

Mostly, Die Lit uses outside voices as accent pieces. London grime icon Skepta elbows his way into “Lean 4 Real,” and although his accent cuts a sharp contrast against nearly any American rapper, here it’s just his mere enunciation that comes as a shock. Young Thug joins Carti in making lots of silly noises on “Choppa Won’t Miss,” and they sound like kids playing over a toy chest. Bourne even gets two verses, because really almost any voice will suffice on music like this, and his is serviceable enough (“Bags of the future/Did it all off computers” is also a pretty solid brag for a producer).

In an Atlanta rap scene that tends to progress incrementally, with artists building off of a shared pool of ideas and advancing the breakthroughs of others, Die Lit is an anomaly, an album that works almost completely from its own lunatic script. At its best—which is to say almost the entire thing, really—the album almost seems to suspend gravity. How does a rapper this basic pull off a project this electrifying? No, Carti’s rapping isn’t any better this time out. And no, it really doesn’t matter. When the carnival itself is this magnificent, there’s no need to nitpick the ring-leader.

Playboi Carti Shares Dates for 2018 Summer Tour

One month after the surprise release of his new album  Die Lit ,  Playboi Carti announces he's hitting the road. The "Magnolia" rapper shared dates and locations for a string of summer shows today (June 13).

Carti will hit 19 cities, kicking off in San Francisco on July 24 and closing in his hometown of Atlanta on Aug. 17. It's Carti's first tour since a 35-date run last summer in support of his self-titled debut mixtape. Carti also announced a joint tour last October with frequent collaborator Lil Uzi Vert, but it was unfortunately canceled one day later.

Supporting acts have not yet been announced. Uzi, Skepta, Travis Scott, Pi'erre Bourne, Bryson Tiller, Chief Keef, Gunna, Red Coldhearted, Young Thug and Young Nudy all feature on Carti's latest project, if that offers any clues. Nudy and Bourne both joined Carti on last summer's tour.

Since Die Lit dropped, Carti let loose a video for the album cut " R.I.P. ," opened a pop-up merchandise shop in New York and performed " Poke It Out " with Nicki Minaj on  Saturday Night Live . He also appeared on A$AP Rocky's new album Testing .

Check out Playboi Carti's tour dates below.

Weekly updates:

Playboi carti’s ‘die lit’ is the revival trap music needs, the rappers new album uses fresh, off-kilter ideas to prove that the genre isn’t at its peak yet.

Weekly updates

There’s a lot of talk amongst the internet that exclaims that we have reached ‘peak-trap’. Publications like Genius and internet personalities like TheNeedleDrop have investigated whether or not the stylings and sounds of trap music are beginning to fizzle out, now that they’ve dominated music for quite some time. As the elements of emo and alternative music have begun to trickle into mainstream hip-hop with artists like Princess Nokia, Trippie Redd and formerly Lil Peep, it seems that a new sound is on the horizon to replace trap. However, upon listening to Playboi Carti’s debut album Die Lit , it seems like the genre has a little more in the tank.

Playboi Carti is a rapper from Atlanta, Georgia, the home of trap music. He broke into the limelight through his affiliations with Awful Records and began to generate some steam with his 2016 hit ‘Broke Boi’. It wasn’t until his debut self-titled mixtape last year that the mainstream caught wind of his talents, with songs like ‘Magnolia’ and collaborations with ASAP Mob seeing his notoriety rise. Playboi Carti’s style has always been somewhat different from his contemporaries, with his ad-lib heavy style and off-kilter flow contrasting the auto-tuned singing trend that dominated the charts. These stylings that once made him the odd one out, have provided him with the ‘it’ factor that is saving trap music from extinction.

Carti’s ideas on Die Lit defy the peak-trap theory in almost every way. While many argue that the sounds of the genre are becoming stale and overused Carti, along with producers like Maaly Raw, Pierre Bourne and Don Cannon, present unique takes on trap’s fundamentals. The warped, atmospheric samples on ‘Fell In Luv’ are both obscure and interesting. Whereas songs like ‘Love Hurts’ are minimal to the point where a kick drum is absent. It’s this approach to the sonics of the album that prove there’s a lot more you can do with the basics of trap production.

While the album is musically experimental, it’s Carti’s vocal inflexions that take this into territories never seen before. He comes equipped with a nonchalant swagger of flows and adlibs, making his music peculiar and polarizing. Songs like ‘Poke It Out’ are repetitive to the point of earworm catchiness, and others like ‘Lean 4 Real’ finds Carti warping his voice into new territories of obscurity. Lyrically, the content stands beside the production in terms of minimalism, but the way that Playboi Carti utilizes his vocals and flows make this album interesting. It’s a method never seen in trap before, and the influence it will have on future artists will increase the lifespan of the genre.

Most trap music is tackled with a heavy southern hip-hop influence, Carti uses his infatuation with punk music to redefine the sounds, and make it something truly anomalous. Everything from the album cover to the short song times is undeniably punk, and it’s the give-no-fucks attitude that Carti possesses that makes this album unique. The song spans are brief and straight to the point on songs like ‘Shoota’ and ‘R.I.P Fredo’, but the sonics challenge the normalities of the genre it exists in. The title Die Lit sums out the punk-influenced nature of this album purposely, as it’s a piece of work that is looking to create hype no matter what the cost is. This concept challenges the grinding, hustler narrative that is running old in trap music and morphs it into a mosh-ready genre with a stronger, enhanced future in store.

While Die Lit may go against the grain of your typical trap album, it utilizes its fundamentals to push the genre forward. Its production is exploratory, venturing across soundscapes that usually don’t pair with an 808. Carti’s vocals are far-fetched but intriguing and innovative. The punk nature makes the album flourish in a melting pot of effortlessness. While this project will divide, it will definitely conquer as it warps the remains of trap music and reinstates its reign over the mainstream. Playboi Carti may Die Lit , but his impact will live on.

Country music‘s Alan Jackson is hanging up his cowboy hat, announcing his final tour dates while his health is “getting worse.”

“I’ve been touring for over 30 years, you know, played everywhere in the country and parts of the world and had a wonderful career,” he said in a video posted on X, announcing the final dates of his Last Call: One More for the Road farewell tour.

The “Chattahoochee” singer, 65, cited a desire to spend more time with family — in particular, his three daughters and his grandchildren — as he enters his “twilight years.”

“I enjoy spending more time at home and don’t want to be away like I had to be in my younger days,” he said. “I think it’s just getting time to start thinking about hanging it up full time.”

Jackson revealed in a new interview that he has a degenerative nerve condition that has affected his balance. Alan Jackson postpones upcoming weekend concerts to deal with ‘health issues’

‘I hoped I’d be able to be there; I hate to disappoint my fans,’ Jackson said of postponing a couple of upcoming weekend shows.

Oct. 5, 2022

Another factor in Jackson’s decision was his diagnosis with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a genetic neurological condition that affects muscle control in the feet and hands. The condition is not fatal but can severely restrict mobility, according to the Cleveland Clinic . The singer has had to postpone shows in order to deal with related health issues , notably halting a multi-show outing in 2022 to deal with “health issues” stemming from the disease.

“Most of my fans know I have a degenerative health condition that affects my legs and arms and my mobility,” the two-time Grammy winner explained in this week’s video. “And it’s getting worse.”

“It makes me more uncomfortable on stage and I just have a hard time. I just want to think about maybe calling it quits before I’m unable to do the job like I want to,” he concluded.

Implicit in the name of Alan Jackson’s current road show, the Keepin’ It Country tour, is the idea that this veteran country star is engaged in some resistance.

Feb. 28, 2015

The Country Music Hall of Fame member revealed his diagnosis in a 2021 interview on “ Today ,” explaining that he decided to make the information public because it was beginning to visibly affect his performances.

“I just wanted the fans and the public to know if they’ve come to see me in the last few years or if they come to see me in the future if I play anymore, what’s going on,” he told co-host Jenna Bush Hager.

“In some ways, [disclosing the condition is] a relief because I was starting to get so self-conscious up there, about stumbling around,” he said. “And it just made me nervous up there trying to keep my balance. And I look pitiful. So I think it’ll be good for me now to get it out in the open, and so if anybody’s curious why I don’t walk right, that’s why.”

At the time, the entertainer said he had no plans to stop touring but that his health condition might affect his availability.

Jackson’s final shows will be played from August to May in Boston; Grand Rapids, Mich.; Fayetteville, Ark.; Kansas City, Mo.; Salt Lake City; Oklahoma City; Fort Worth, Texas; Orlando and Tampa, Fla., and Milwaukee. Tickets went on sale Friday.

Pathos laid on with a shovel, you may be thinking — but you would be wrong. Following 2009’s Mary and Max , Memoir of a Snail is only the second Claymation feature from Australia’s Adam Elliot , who won an Oscar for his short film Harvey Krumpet in 2003. Elliot makes films unlike anyone else’s: quirky, intimate, minutely observed, melancholy and funny in equal measure and very obviously made of clay. That homespun quality, coupled with the engaging voice Succession star Sarah Snook brings to the long-suffering Gracie, turn an ostensibly bleak story into a life-affirming pleasure.

Young Gracie was born with a split upper lip. She adores her twin brother Gilbert ( Kodi Smit-McPhee ), who gamely fights off the school bullies who mock his sister’s “rabbit face” and harbors dreams of becoming a Parisian street performer like their father. Papa Percy is now in a wheelchair, having been mown down mid-juggle by a drunk driver soon after moving to Australia; since their mother died, he has also taken to the bottle. And yet, as voiced with plenty of French flourishes by Dominique Pinon, Percy is a kind parent who delights in doing funny things with jellybeans for his children’s amusement; one of the charms of Elliot’s work is his generosity towards his characters’ failings.

The twins write to each other often. Gilbert swears he is coming to get his sister but has no money. Cut down by loneliness and a rich mix of anxieties, she submerges herself in hoarding, shoplifting and a brief but bizarre marriage to a microwave mechanic (Tony Armstrong) who feeds her as if he’s as if he is fattening her up for market. From here, things only get sadder, even if that sadness is leavened by dozens of visual jokes, the thrill of hearing musician Nick Cave recite a poem and the memoir’s paradoxically comforting reflections on grief. Eleanor Kats-Chernin’s lovely original score dances around Gracie’s monologue like a sprite.

Elliot is something of a fundamentalist himself. Eschewing modern temptations like the 3D printer, he and his team made all 7,000 objects and 200 sets in his film by hand, incorporating the wobbles and thumb-prints resulting from Elliot’s hereditary shake, an aesthetic he calls “chunky wonky”. That is just the start of the process, however. There is no slower way to make a film than to move objects incrementally, frame by frame, to suggest motion; Memoir of a Snail ’s 94 minutes are composed of 135,000 photographs, shot over 33 weeks by cinematographer Gerald Thompson. You don’t have to be mad to do stop-motion animation but, as the saying goes, it helps.

Which makes it all the remarkable that Memoir of a Snail , peopled though it is with flawed, unpredictable characters, is so reassuringly sane. People may be wayward, weak or behave  reprehensibly (like the magistrate Grace encounters who was disbarred for masturbating in court, played endearingly by Eric Bana ), but most of them do their best. Elliot actually has his own flaws and weaknesses: for example, he has a regrettable tendency to show us an event and then have Gracie tell us what happened, so that we are effectively told twice. Characters repeat themselves, too; Grace says way too many times that she misses Gilbert “like crazy”. We can see that; we can feel it; it is the pulse of the story.

But it doesn’t matter.  The flaws fit; they are verbal thumbprints, if you like. Why would Elliot be perfect? We know in our bones — especially after seeing this film — that nobody is.

The COVID-19 infection you caught at a Taylor Swift concert is not a gift from 'Mother'

  • Forget friendship bracelets — some Swifties are calling Covid-19 their new concert souvenirs.
  • Some fans who got COVID-19 after attending her Eras Tour are calling it a "gift" from "Mother."
  • In an informal poll on X after the Madrid show, over 3,700 people said they contracted the virus.

Insider Today

It's been years since the pandemic times of COVID-19 lockdowns and the era of mandated masking. But while the virus is still circulating, some Swifties have become wildly optimistic about what it means to catch an infection at one of their idol's concerts.

So much so that some Swifties on social media are playfully dubbing the COVID-19 infection they think they got from her concerts a "souvenir" and a "gift" from "Mother."

A post on X from a Spanish Taylor Swift fan account asked followers: "Did you go to #MadridTStheErasTour and take COVID, a virus, or a cold with you as a souvenir? I open a survey."

¿Fuiste al #MadridTStheErasTour y te llevaste de recuerdo covid, algún virus o algún resfriado? Abro encuestita: — Taylor Swift España (@taylorswiftes_) June 3, 2024

Of the nearly 10,800 votes, 35% voted yes. People in the poll's comments section described their symptoms and showed their positive COVID-19 tests — but also raved about how they thought it was worth it.

The poll has been viewed nearly 144,000 times at press time.

One X user commented : "Going to Taylor's concert has meant losing my voice, losing my mental health and, well, my health in general, I'm more dead than alive (but I would go to the concert a thousand more times)."

Earlier in February, an Australian concertgoer posted a TikTok of herself dressed up in her concert outfit and glam makeup. The video then cut straight to her holding up a positive COVID-19 test kit in bed.

@loving.little.ones The Eras Tour souvenir no ones talking about 🫠 if youre heading to the sydney shows this weekend, wash your hands regularly! 🥲🫶🏼 #erastour #taylorswift #sick #sydney ♬ original sound - Michelle Monaghan

She captioned the post: "The Eras Tour souvenir no ones talking about. if youre heading to the sydney shows this weekend, wash your hands regularly!"

However, other X users have voiced their disbelief at Swifties calling the virus a souvenir.

One X user wrote: "Taylor Swift's concert attendees are calling their Covid infections 'souvenirs' and 'gifts' from 'Mother,' and I'm supposed to NOT wanna launch myself into the sun???"

Concerts have gained notoriety as COVID-19 superspreader events. In 2021, over 2,200 people caught the virus after going to music festivals in northeast Spain.

And while the virus is treated more like the common flu now, COVID-19 is still circulating — and people are getting infected across the US.

Virus-spreading or not, Swift's Eras Tour has been widely successful, propelling the singer-songwriter to billionaire status . Swift is now in the UK for her next leg of the tour.

Swift's representative didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
