The art of backpacking & adventures to get out of your comfort zone – tips and advice, how to do a day trip to anguilla from saint martin/sint marteen.

All that you need to know to take the public ferry from the island of Saint Martin to Anguilla – including schedules, prices, & maps. Plus, more info about the British territory of Anguilla like transportation options, accommodation, and what to do. Works also if you are visiting Saint Martin on a cruise ship!

Shoal Bay in Anguilla

The island of Saint Martin is one of the main destinations in the Caribbean between all the visitors that come by cruise ship and just pass a day, as well as all those that spend several nights.

There’s a lot of things to do and places to see between the island’s French side, called Saint Martin , and its Dutch side called Sint Maarten .

You can find a list of St Martin activities and things to do here on Get Your Guide . or Viator . You can even reserve and purchase activities directly (or just look at the options for some inspiration for what to do on your own).

But if you’ve already explored the island enough and are on the lookout for another nearby adventure, then I recommend you spend a day (or several) visiting Anguilla, Saint Martin’s closest neighbor.

What’s Anguilla?

Anguilla is a British island territory in the Caribbean that’s only about 25 minutes by boat from Saint Martin.

It’s a fairly small island that’s just 16 miles (25 kilometers) in length and 3 miles (5 kilometers) wide at its widest point.

What to do & visit in Anguilla

For visitors, Anguilla’s main attractions are without a doubt its 33 beautiful beaches to choose from. Some with lots of wind and thus perfect for watersports like kitesurfing or windsurfing, others tranquil paradises like Shoal Bay. To give you an idea of what I’m talking about, Anguilla’s Shoal Bay is considered one of the most beautiful and exclusive places in the Caribbean!

Other famous areas include Barnes Bay, Rendezvous Bay, Road Bay, and Little Bay. Anguilla is also known as one of the few places where sea turtles come annually to lay eggs between April and November. So, if you’re lucky you’ll get to see them!

You can find a list of more activities and attractions in Anguilla here.

How to get from Saint Martin to Anguilla (the cheapest way possible)

( NOTE: if you’re visiting Saint Martin on a cruise and just have one day to go to Anguilla, read below where I explain all that you need to know about getting from the cruise terminal in Philipsburg to Marigot to Anguilla and back again)

For being so close to each other, there’s a surprising number of ways to get from Saint Martin to the island of Anguilla.

The most expensive and fastest would be to charter a small plane from the Philipsburg airport in Saint Martin to the airport in Anguilla. The flight is just 8 minutes. There aren’t any big commercial flights going to Anguilla!

There’s also the option to take a fast charter boat from Saint Martin to Anguilla. But since they’re chartered, they aren’t exactly cheap.

But if your idea is to save on your visit to Anguilla, the best option is to take the public ferry between Marigot (the capital of the French side of Saint Martin) and Blowing Point Port in Anguilla (and really, the ferry is only 25 minutes…so there’s no reason not to do this option!).

You can get to the Marigot ferry terminal pretty easily from wherever you’re staying in Saint Martin (either by bus or taxi). Just ask your hostel , hotel , or any of the friendly locals on the street for guidance.

Schedule for the public ferry between Marigot (Saint Martin) and Anguilla

17:15

Schedule for the public ferry between Anguilla and Marigot (Saint Martin)

For more information on one of the boats that does this crossing, check it out here:

Cost of the public ferry between Marigot (Saint Martin) and Anguilla

The cost of the ferry is USD $10 one way or USD $20 roundtrip per person. You can buy the ticket right at the terminal – no need to reserve ahead of time.

When leaving from Marigot in Saint Martin, you’ll also need to pay a port fee of USD $5.00 when you buy your ticket.

If you aren’t going to stay overnight in Anguilla and just plan to spend the day, you don’t need to pay any port fee in Blowing Point when you leave Anguilla. But if you spend more than a day in Anguilla, you’ll have to pay a port fee of USD $23 when you buy your ticket for your ferry back to Saint Martin.

Total price for the public ferry day trip between Saint Martin and Anguilla

Ticket to go = USD $10

Ticket to return = USD $10

Port tax when departing = USD $5

Total = USD $25

And remember, if you spend more than a day in Anguilla, you’ll have to pay that USD $23 port tax when returning back to Saint Martin.

Immigration in Saint Martin

Tips for the trip between Saint Martin and Anguilla

As the sea between the two islands can be very choppy and have lots of waves splashing into the boat, I recommend you protect your stuff in a plastic bag so it doesn’t get wet.

And if you get seasick, it’s better to take some type of medicine before you get on the ferry. Crushed ginger pills are a good natural option to help with motion sickness in boats or cars.

Important tip for immigration between Saint Martin and Anguilla: bring your passport with you!!

Remember that you’ll be leaving from a French territory (Saint Martin) to a British territory (Anguilla)! So, since they are different countries (and the United Kingdom isn’t a part of the Schengen area like France), you’ll need to do immigration at both ports. It’s a super simple process, but obviously , you’ll need your passport to do it. Without the passport, you won’t be able to board the boat to Anguilla!

How to get around the island once you arrive in Anguilla

If you are staying in a hotel on Anguilla, they’ll probably arrange transportation from the port of Anguilla (Blowing Point) to your hotel. But if you’re just visiting for the day, you’ll have to arrange your own transportation to visit the places you want to.

Here are your options for local transportation in Anguilla:

Taxi in Anguilla: You can get a taxi right at the port when you get off the ferry. You can have them take you directly to one place (Shoal Bay, for example), or arrange with the taxi driver to drive you around and stay with you for a few hours to see various points on the island.

Price of the taxi: about USD $20 or so per hour (but negotiable depending on the total time)

Rental car in Anguilla: I think renting a car in Anguilla is your best option for transportation, especially if you have several people to split the cost with. It’s cheaper than a taxi and gives you the freedom to explore the island and visit places for as long as you like.

If you’ve read my article on the 5 Best Website for Rental Cars Around the World , you’ll know that I like to check several car rental websites before reserving to find the best deal. But in Anguilla, there’s not a lot of options for rental cars like in other places. Basically, they just have one car rental place and it’s right in front of Blowing Hole Port. So when you arrive from your ferry, you can rent your car from them right away.

It’ll be best if you can call to reserve a car and confirm the price ahead of time. You have to call because this rental car place doesn’t have a website.

(P.S: I know making international calls can be tricky, but I’ve always found Skype to be the easiest and cheapest way to make them. You can read more about how we use Skype for cheap international calls here . )

Here is the info and pictures of the car rental place in Anguilla:

Cost of renting a car: around $60 per day including the Anguilla driving permission (which they’ll give you right at car rental place). You need to bring your passport and driver’s license from your home country to be able to rent the car.

Scooter/motorcycle rental in Anguilla: this would be a great option to explore the island, especially if you’re alone or as a couple. But unfortunately, after the last hurricane that hit the island, all of the scooters were destroyed (as of January 2018). The only place to rent scooters on the island is the same as the car rental place we just talked about above.

So, I’d recommend calling ahead as well to see if there still are no scooters. Perhaps by the time you read this article, the scooters will have been replaced and are now available to rent again.

Bicycle rental in Anguilla: personally, I don’t think renting bikes to explore Anguilla is the best option. The best places to visit aren’t that close to Blowing Point Port, so you’d lose a lot of time just pedaling under the hot Caribbean sun to get to them. The island also isn’t very flat, thus making your journey more difficult. So in my experience, if you only have a day in Anguilla, bike isn’t such a great option.

This doesn’t mean that there aren’t places to rent bicycles in Anguilla. But the options available are for speed and road bikes (professional-ish ones), and probably not the type you’d want for a relaxed ride around the island.

Tip about transportation in Anguilla (or really anywhere else in the world): No matter what form of transportation you choose, I recommend you download a map of Anguilla from Google Maps onto your phone. Then, you can use it offline to avoid getting lost while you venture around the island.

Where to Stay in Anguilla

If you plan to stay more than a day in Anguilla, you’ll need a hotel or hostel that fits your budget and style. So, I’ll give you 2 options here. The more expensive and luxurious one is in Shoal Bay, one of Anguilla’s most famous spots, and the other option is a lower-key choice in case you want to save a bit more. But as you can see here in this list of hotels with prices , there aren’t actually cheap options in Anguilla.

How to do a day trip to Anguilla during a cruise stop in Saint Martin (Sint Maarten)

I did this exact trip myself. So, I’ll explain everything so you can do it too. Including maps & photos below!

  • Disembark from your cruise as early as possible. Then, you’ll have the most amount of time to explore Anguilla.
  • Walk for about 10 minute from the Philipsburg Cruise Terminal to the center of Philipsburg to take a local bus to Marigot. Map below.
  • In Marigot, get off at the bus terminal and walk for 5 minutes to the port to take the public ferry to Anguilla.
  • Take the ferry to Blowing Point in Anguilla. All the info about prices, schedule, Anguilla local transportation and activities are above.
  • Return to Marigot by ferry, walk from the port to the bus terminal, and take a bus back to Philipsburg.
  • In Philipsburg, get off near the center and walk back to the cruise terminal.

Map Saint Martin to Anguilla

Pay attention so you don’t miss your cruise! Plan to return back to Saint Martin at least an hour and a half before the final call to be on your ship. Then, if you have any problems along the way back from Anguilla to the terminal in Philipsburg, you’ll have some backup time to find an alternative. Just remember that if you aren’t back by the time your cruise says to be back, they’ll leave without you!

If all goes well, the total cost for visiting Anguilla during your cruise stop in St. Martin will fall under USD $100 (including the ferry and renting a car). Cheaper than most tours your cruise ship offers to go to Anguilla! And if you’re with more people and can split the cost of the car, it’ll be even cheaper per person.

It’s definitely worth visiting Anguilla during your stop in Saint Martin if you’ve already been or stopped several times in Saint Martin and want to do something new.

Where to find tours, activities and attractions in Anguilla?

If you are planning to visit Anguilla Island, be sure to check out the attractions and tours available in that region beforehand. A good way to do this is through the GetYourGuide website or Viator . That way, you can plan ahead and visit all the amazing places that this destination has to offer.

A day trip to Anguilla

Anguilla is one of those places where time seems to have stood still. This little island in the eastern Caribbean, just north of St. Martin is blessed with some of the most magnificent beaches in the world. Anguilla ( map ) is a short 30 minute boat ride from  Marigot ( map ) on the French side of St. Martin, making Anguilla an easy day trip from St. Martin. The island’s main attractions are its stunning white sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters and its inhabitants who are friendly and easy-going. You can opt to make a day trip or stay a few days at one of the island’s (small scale, exclusive) beach hotels.

How to get to Anguilla

Anguilla is a great day trip from St. Martin. To get there, take the frequent ferry service from Marigot. Don’t forget to bring your passport with you! US, UK and EU passport holders should have no issues entering Anguilla but please check here to be sure.

Anguilla day trip by ferry

There is a ferry service every 45 minutes from Marigot, starting from 8:15am and ends at 7:00pm. A one-way trip costs USD 20 for adults and USD 10 for children (2-11 years-old).

The ferry from Marigot arrives at Blowing Point . If you’re staying for the day, you can hire a taxi and agree an hourly or day fare. The best option is to ask the taxi driver to make a short sightseeing trip. Visit some of the main attractions in Anguilla such as Crocus Hill (Anguilla’s highest point), Sandy Ground (with its numerous restaurants and bars), and the capital, The Valley , before ending at one of the stunning beaches. Agree a time for the taxi driver to pick you up and bring you back to Blowing Point for the ferry back to Marigot.

The last ferry to Marigot leaves Blowing Point at 6:15pm (please note that all ferry times and fares stated above are subject to change. Check here for the latest info).

Anguilla beaches

Anguilla has many beautiful beaches but my favourite is Shoal Bay (East) , arguably Anguilla’s most iconic beach. Spend a very relaxing day on this breathtaking stretch of gorgeous white sand. Rent a snorkel and enjoy a BBQ lunch at one of the beach cafés.

anguilla-day-trip-shoal-bay-east-photo

Other stunning beaches in Anguilla include Meads Bay and Rendezvous Bay . Sandy Ground is another option. With its many restaurants and beach bars, such as Elvis Beach Bar and Dad’s Beach Bar, Sandy Ground is popular with both locals and visitors.

The Perfect Day Trip to Anguilla

By: Louise Fayet

If you are in Sint Maarten/Saint Martin , taking a day trip to Anguilla is a MUST. It's easy and worth it!

Although we recommend a week in Anguilla, you can get a good taste of the island in just one day.

Let's get started...

Getting to Anguilla From St. Maarten

The most popular way to get to Anguilla from St. Maarten is by boat. Anguilla's public ferry is a convenient option. A quick 20 minute ride from St. Martin's Marigot port, it is reliable with multiple boats per day.

The earliest ferry leaves St. Martin to Anguilla at 8:30AM and the last ferry leaves Anguilla at 6:00PM which gives you over 9 hours on Anguilla!

Marigot port Saint Martin

Want a quicker and more luxurious option? Charter boats will zip you from St. Maarten's Dutch side to Anguilla in less than 20 minutes - with a rum punch in hand, no less! Calypso Charters is one of our favorite charter companies.

More on Anguilla's ferry system and charter boats here .

Once you decide on your preferred method of getting here...

Prepare For Your Trip

Make sure to bring all of your travel requirements and to book your car rental , scooter or taxi ahead of time.

Driving around Anguilla is pretty straight forward. Here are a few things to remember:

  • In Anguilla, we drive on the left side of the road.
  • Use a map app so you don't get lost.
  • Keep your eyes peeled for stray goats!

Anguilla goats

Special Tip: When it comes to maps, we recommend downloading the Google Maps app. Be sure to pre-load the offline map of Anguilla. More on accessing the offline Anguilla map here . If you would prefer to have Internet access while driving the island, drop into Digicel to get a SIM chip .

All right, you are on-island in your rental car... where do you start?

The Perfect Day Trip

A perfect day in Anguilla begins with an excellent breakfast. Our top pick for morning treats? Le Bon Pain in the island's East End.

Le Bon Pain is home to THE best croissants on the island, tasty sandwiches, quiches and quality coffee. Owner and baker, Yvonne is there 4 hours before opening to make everything from scratch.

We recommend getting pastries and baguette sandwiches.

Le Bon Pain Anguilla

Made of an entire baguette that is cut in two, these sandwiches are super high value. Also, your Le Bon Pain leftovers make for a great snack at the beach.

Talking about the beach, and conveniently located just 5 minutes from Le Bon Pain...

Shoal Bay East is first on our "Must Sea " list!

Anguilla's most famous beach, it ranks as one of the top beaches in not only the Caribbean, but the entire world. Its rich blue waters and soft white sand make it the most picturesque beach.

Shoal Bay Beach, Anguilla

It is a two-mile sandy beach that you can walk end-to-end. Still have your leftovers from Le Bon Pain? Find a shady spot and have a snack!

Need a drink? Shoal Bay has got your back. There are plenty of popular restaurants, local bars and beautiful hotels on this stretch of sand.

After a good soak at Shoal, let's head West to another top spot, Rendezvous Bay.

Note: Along the way you will pass a few favorite beaches:

  • Sandy Ground

Stop by one if you have time!

20 minutes after you leave Shoal Bay, you will arrive to...

Rendezvous Bay Anguilla

This semi-circle of sand boasts incredibluuue views of St. Martin! With gentle waves and brilliant blue waters, Rendezvous Bay is a favorite to many. It has been voted #1 beach in the Caribbean time and time again by travelers.

Rendezvous Bay is also home to one of our favorite BBQ shacks, The Sunshine Shack , locally referred to as Garvey's.

Sunshine Shack Anguilla

The BEST BBQ Anguilla has to offer, cool & refreshing cocktails, live music and good vibes... is there anything else you could ever need? ;-)

I know it is hard to leave but the next stop begs to be seen...

Meads Bay Anguilla

Meads Bay’s beauty is one of a kind. Here, the clear ocean floor is unmarked by reef and the shades of blue stretch to both ends of the beach. It is no surprise that Meads Bay has become a destination in and of itself.

Meads Bay is home to Anguilla’s most luxurious hotels, sophisticated villas and five-star restaurants all favored by the jetset and visiting mega-yachts.

Meads Bay Anguilla

You would expect this beach to be packed daily, right? That is never the case. Some days you have Meads all to yourself! That is the magic of Anguilla :-)

We recommend walking end to end, starting from the beach's eastern cove (near Malliouhana ) and heading towards the Four Seasons Resort . This will give you a full view of what Meads Bay has to offer.

On your walk, keep your eyes peeled for local favorite, Ocean Echo .

Ocean Echo, Meads Bay Anguilla

It is known for its laidback, casual atmosphere, excellent beach eats, terrific service and the best rum punch in Anguilla, the Rumzie!

Grab a drink, snack and pull up a beach chair. Listen to the "Ocean's Echo" while you enjoy your final moments at Meads.

The last stop of the day? Just a 5 minute drive away...

Meads Bay Anguilla

Perfection in the shape of a flawless little crescent, Maunday's never ceases to amaze us with its beauty.

Maunday's Bay is almost exclusively for Belmond Cap Juluca , Anguilla's crown jewel resort. The resort's suites line the beach, offering spectacular views of the shimmering Caribbean Sea. It's no wonder why Cap Juluca chose Maunday's Bay to be its home...

Meads Bay Anguilla

After soaking in the sun and bathing in the blue, it's time for your bittersweet departure.

The drive from Maunday's Bay to the ferry terminal is ~15 minutes. We recommend arriving ~20 minutes before departure time.

Until Next Time!

And on that note? The only thought that crosses everyone's mind... not enough time!

Check these top spots off your "Must Sea " list and there is no doubt that you will fall in love. Chances are next time you are on this ferry, it won't be for just one day... ;-)

Just 9 miles away, the shores of Anguilla can be seen from the North Side of the island. Anguilla is known for its long stretches of beaches and upscale accommodation. Easy to explore, Anguilla stretches 16 miles long, from the East End to the West End, and is 3 miles at its widest point, giving the British island its name from the French word, Anguilla, meaning eel. The territory includes several small uninhabited offshore islands, the largest of which are Dog, Scrub, Sombrero islands, and the Prickly Pear Cays. Anguilla is the perfect weekend getaway or day trip to add to your itinerary when visiting St. Maarten, with plenty of options to get there. Whether it’s  by plane, ferry, or a chartered boat trip, getting to Anguilla is as easy as can be.

How to get to Anguilla

The quickest way to strolling the sandy white beaches of Anguilla for the day is by plane. The flight journey is just under 10 minutes, and offers some pretty stunning aerial views. Day Trippers can book their flight with Anguilla Air Services with flights operating multiple times a day. Visitors also have the option to visit Anguilla by ferry. The Public Ferry departs from the French Side Capital, Marigot, and runs every day, every hour, with the first ferry departing Marigot at 8:40 am, and the last ferry departing at 6:15 pm. There are also plenty of semi-private ferry options. Transfer charters, Funtime and Calypso Charters offer a seamless worry-free transfer experience from Princess Juliana International Airport to Anguilla.

9 Best Things To Do In St. Maarten During A Day In Port

W hile I had visited St. Maarten many times on cruises, I had never left for a cruise from this port until I sailed with Windstar Cruises. My husband Eddie and I flew into St. Maarten and used the ship’s transfer to shuttle us to a hotel; we wanted to be sure to dodge any unexpected change of travel plans before cruising the following afternoon. There was time to experience a little more of the dual-nation island than in the past, which was a nice change of pace. Here is what we found to be the best things to do in St. Maarten during a day in port.

St. Maarten, Dutch ( Netherlands ), and St. Martin, French, make up the two-nation, 37-square-mile island in the Lesser Antilles Archipelago.

I was hosted by Windstar Cruises on a press trip. All reviews and opinions are 100 percent unbiased and my own.

1. See The Marigot Waterfront

St. Maarten’s capital, Marigot, has many boutiques and quaint outdoor French cafes, bistros, and sushi restaurants. Colonial buildings, plus some contemporary, are situated between pastel-colored shopping arcades.

Shopping and dining — named some of the best in the Caribbean — are primo at this picturesque location. You’ll find Rosemary’s Seafood and Creole Cuisine, a restaurant written about in major magazines and books, such as Travel + Leisure and Lonely Planet .

Pro Tip: Don’t miss the sculpture of the Market Woman, done by local artist Martin Lynn and dedicated to the St. Martin Market Women. It is one of St. Martin’s most recognized works of art.

2. Arrive Early

Arrive on the island of St. Maarten — often written Sint Maarten — a day before your cruise, so you have a chance to unwind and enjoy the starting point a bit. We stayed at the Homage Hotel & Residences , a modern hotel on the French side, St. Martin, with a huge bedroom and well-lit bathroom. Tropical paintings, vibrant colors, and accent pieces really made our room pop. A small patio with lounge chairs was right outside our room through sliding glass doors, which led right down to the sand. We were steps from the beach.

The Homage Hotel had a stunning infinity pool and plenty of space to wander with social distance. Be prepared to feel like you’ve been transported somewhere amazing during your stay here. Palm trees were plentiful, and the entire resort was covered with unique artwork and sculptures. The Homage had an onsite restaurant and bar, which was good since nothing was very close to us. Eddie and I thoroughly enjoyed the tropical vibe, cute spots to hang out along the waterfront, and the chill-out Ibiza music playing throughout.

3. Explore St. Martin

The french side of the island.

St. Martin has a totally different feel and vibe from its counterpart, St. Maarten. Eddie and I had a great night out here with new friends we’d made at the hotel who were also going on our cruise. We took a cab to Marigot for dinner at Be Kool . The restaurant sat on the waterfront and was in an excellent location. We each had a bowl of French onion soup, luscious and rich. My main course was a fantastic pork tenderloin with mushroom sauce.

You won’t want to miss the high-end retail and fancy designer shops in the daytime and the open-market bazaar in St. Martin. There are also vendor stalls with fresh produce, locally-made jewelry, and clothing to meet your shopping needs.

Pro Tip: Please note that this area, like much of the United States, is experiencing a worker shortage, so be prepared to spend 2+ hours at dinner.

4. Take An Island Tour Of St. Martin

We had quite a bit of time to kill after disembarking our Windstar Cruises ship before heading to the airport, so we signed up for the 3-hour, post-cruise island tour. Our guide was fantastic — full of knowledge and fun, relatable facts, plus cheery and happy-go-lucky. We made a loop of the entire island and had several photo-ops and free time opportunities.

The group spent 25 minutes or so strolling around Marigot at our own pace. Use this time to grab a French pastry, baguette, or great cup of coffee. We had around 45 minutes to explore downtown Phillipsburg . This is where many large cruise ships come into port, so there are plenty of things to see and do. We found an Indian restaurant on a side street off Front and had a delicious meal. For a bonus, there was free WiFi and the owners were very gracious for our business.

Pro Tip: Yacht racing is popular in St. Martin — you will see plenty of pricey vessels worth a photo.

5. Downtown Phillipsburg

Downtown Phillipsburg has 16 blocks of nearly everything you could wish to purchase duty-free, mostly jewelry, clothing, electronics, and shoes. I found the charming little courthouse to be a nice change in scenery, looking like it was transported from New England .

Voorstraat has casinos — slots, blackjack, and roulette — and duty-free shops, plus a Hard Rock Cafe that unfortunately closed and broke my heart as I was craving a juicy cheeseburger.

On the beach side of Great Bay, you’ll find the cool boardwalk, an excellent place to enjoy the salty air, people-watch, and buy souvenirs. Popular souvenirs include magnets, postcards, tote bags, rum, and tropical clothing. It was Christmas on our visit, and Heineken had a Christmas tree display for a big event that topped all holiday decorations for the whole trip.

Pro Tip: There are some fun murals to see around downtown Phillipsburg, too.

6. Phillipsburg Marketplace

Front Street, which runs along the eastern Caribbean Sea’s waterfront in Phillipsburg, the Dutch side of the island, is lined with flags, street lamps, and pure white sand beaches. Market stalls, or kiosks, offer all sorts of handmade goods at the Phillipsburg Marketplace, such as license plates, jewelry, toys, and t-shirts.

If tablecloths excite you as they do us, check out Mr. Tablecloth Too , with custom-made pieces, placemats, and table runners. Lace is an artform on this island, and the delicate pieces make one-of-a-kind souvenirs.

Pro Tip: While prices are negotiable, I encourage you to not barter and support the locals who rely on tourism to put food on their tables.

7. Go Fishing

St. Maarten is a year-round fishing destination, so use your time to charter a boat and try it. Or even go deep-sea fishing, which is an option with Viator , a TripAdvisor company that I’ve used around the world. Sailfish and marlin are popular during the summer months, while kingfish, wahoo, and mahi-mahi are highly sought after.

8. Enjoy The Beaches

Cruise ships dock at A.C. Wathey Pier, in Dutch St. Maarten. It is referred to as the “St. Tropez of the Caribbean.”

St. Martin boasts the most famous beach on the island, Orient Beach. Expect frolicking sunbathers ; ladies in colorful clothing, selling over-priced goods and offering to braid your hair; and tasty, cosmopolitan restaurants on the beach with the best beef carpaccio you’ve ever tasted.

If you wish to enjoy a day at the beach, look no further. Bring some cash to reserve a lounge chair and umbrella, should you desire, and feast your eyes on the magical crystal blue water and often the athletic youngsters playing volleyball or chasing waves. Orient Beach is continually voted one of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

I will alert you that there is a clothing-optional beach, so be prepared. It is somewhat on the edge of Orient Beach and in the Club Orient section. Don’t expect big parties there or something MTV-worthy, as these are primarily people just dabbling in naturalism. Please do not use a camera, and respect their privacy.

While St. Martin has Orient Beach, St. Maarten has an exciting opportunity that is unmatched anywhere in the world. You can watch the airplanes land at Princess Juliana International Airport on Maho Beach. And by watching, I mean you can feel the force of the wind from the planes so strongly that you may need to brace yourself. Sandblasted is what they call it. The airport sits along the beach, with a mountain on the other side.

For a quieter option in St. Maarten, consider going to Mullet Bay Beach, perfect for snorkeling and enjoying water sports. Fun fact: The island has a whopping 37 beaches in total.

Pro Tip: Order a famous Sint Maarten Guavaberry Colada. This three-ingredient drink is made from Guavaberry liqueur (the island’s national liqueur), cream of coconut, and pineapple juice.

9. Go Horseback Riding

It’s always a thrilling opportunity to ride horses on the beautiful sandy beaches, so why not check off this bucket list activity while you are here?

Planning to move my mid July solo trip from STJ to SXM because of frequent power outages and I have a few questions.

2. Are restaurants on the French side allergy friendly?

3. Are taxis readily available for folks not renting a car ?

4. Best way to make calls back to the states?

5. Any special events for Bastille Day?

Really looking for a relaxing beach trip. I have been to the island by cruise ship about 3x but never stayed. I had a short list of hotels that I'll need to revisit. Thanks in advance

st. maarten day trip to anguilla

There is ferry service to Anguilla from both near the airport and from Marigot.

My phone carrier has international service, but it still was

Not reliable . I used WhatsApp with great success

I use anything that I can access with wifi like Skype.

Here are my top three hotel picks:

st. maarten day trip to anguilla

2. Restaurants on the French side are generally allergy-friendly. Just let them know about your allergies, and they should be able to accommodate you.

3. Taxis are readily available, so you won’t have any trouble finding one even if you’re not renting a car .

4. For calling back to the States, using an app like WhatsApp or Skype over WiFi is your best bet.

5. Bastille Day events: Yes, there are celebrations on July 14th, including a party at Orient Bay and fireworks.

Enjoy your trip!

Your hotel list is diverse, but excellent.

The Anse Marcel area is up and over a mountain pass and is a bit isolated. I don't normally suggest it for a first visit, but we like to drive around to different beaches everyday and that may not be your thing. The setup at Anse Marcel very nice so if you are a sit at the same beach every day people then it is very pleasant.

Taxis are plentiful, but each driver is on his own cell phone rather than there being a central dispatch. If you'll use taxis then grab the business card of your first driver when you arrive at the airport. If you call them they will generally help get you where you want to go--even if they are busy they will call their nephew or neighbor and pass you on that way. I've yet to have a poor taxi experience (knock on wood.)
