Best Places To Visit In Ireland - Top Attractions For Everyone

The best places to visit in Ireland have all kinds of breathtaking charms: from the remote appeal of scenery to the modern-day and vibrant cosmopolitan beauty. With its magnificent castles, lovely beaches and spectacular mountains, wanderlusts from all over the world are drawn to this relatively small country.

With so many alluring options to choose from, deciding where to go can be a daunting task. Our team at CabinZero has picked out the most ideal suggestions for your next trip to this beautiful island country.

Read more, and you will find out the best places to put on your Irish bucket list. There’s no shortage of unparalleled attractions that one shouldn’t miss out on. Everything is a feast for the senses. Let’s start exploring the best Emerald Isle has to offer!

Dublin

There’s no better starting point to learn about Ireland’s history and culture than Dublin, the nation’s capital city. The largest city in Ireland has a long list of outstanding attractions.

Among the attractions in Dublin , the Guinness storehouse is the most visited, and not without good reasons. More than a simple brewery, this seven-story building is an extensive exhibition of Guinness' long history. The highlight is the Gravity bar, where visitors can have 360 views of Dublin city.

Being the Land of Saints and Scholars, Ireland has a renowned long history of education. If you are interested, then you should visit Ireland's oldest university, Trinity College. The lively college community welcomes everyone, whether you are a student, an academic visitor, or a tourist.

If you want “Dublin's best museum experience,” then The Little Museum of Dublin is a must-visit. Within 30 minutes, you can get a glimpse into people’s lives in the 20th century. The tour guides are enthusiastic and knowledgeable, you will love your time spent here.

For those who still want to explore more museums and rich cultural heritage, consider taking a direct flight to visit the incredible attractions in Amsterdam . Both Dublin and Amsterdam are amazing in their own rights, anyone should experience both cities at least once in their life.

2. Cliffs of Moher

Cliffs of Moher

The view from the Cliffs of Moher on a clear day is simply breathtaking.  Photo by espiegle - stock.adobe.com

A day trip distance from Dublin (260 km / 161 miles) lies one of the best places to visit in Ireland : Cliffs of Moher. Located in County Clare, the sea cliffs stretch for about 14 kilometres (9 miles). It’s likely the first image you see when you set foot in Dublin Airport.

You may recognize the landmark from the movie Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince or Irish band Westlife’s music video “My Love.” In fact, it has been a backdrop for many tv programmes, movies, and adverts.

And that’s not a surprise considering the stunning landscape of the 200 metres / 700 feet high cliffs top. It’s the best place to take in the breathtaking panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, Aran Islands, Galway Bay, Twelves Pins, etc. O’Brien’s tower, situated at the highest point of the cliffs, is the best way to do that.

Nature enthusiasts will love it here. Boasting a wide array of fauna and flora, you get the chance to observe the land, air and marine life. For instance, whales or whale sharks are some of the most sought-after animals.

3. Aran Islands

Aran Islands

The wide sandy beach of Inishmore, the largest of the three among Aran Islands.  Photo by MNStudio - stock.adobe.com

The next place to go in Ireland on our list is Aran Islands, where the rugged beauty will transport you to another world. The destination consists of three islands:  Inishmore (Inis Mór), Inishmaan (Inis Meáin) and Inisheer (Inis Oírr).

Many ferry tours bundle a trip to one of the Aran Islands and a return trip to the Cliffs of Moher. So be sure to check them out. Remember to pack in layers as the weather can be unpredictable.

Many experienced travellers would agree that the best time to visit this place is between May-June and September-October. The weather is generally wonderful during these months, and there are fewer tourists since it’s “shoulder season.”

As the most common way of getting around is walking, hiking, and cycling, it’s recommended to wear a good pair of shoes. Besides biking, a horse and carriage tour is also a great way to explore the islands.

If you are a beach lover, then Inis Oirr is the perfect place for you. It has stunning white beaches with clear blue water. On that note, if you don’t mind hot weather and want to seek more beaches, check out Greece and its must-see destinations .

Belfast

Belfast is the capital city of Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom. Often overshadowed by Dublin, Belfast has its own charms and atmosphere that you can’t find anywhere else.

Besides the English Market, St. George’s Market is the ideal first place to start exploring Ireland’s fantastic foods and vibe. Built between 1890 and 1896, the attraction is one of the oldest markets in Ireland. It is open on Fridays and weekends. Friday is dedicated to a variety market while Saturday focuses on city food and craft. Sunday is a mix of the Friday and Saturday markets.

As this city is the Titanic's real home, it’s no wonder that Titanic Belfast is one of the best Northern Ireland tourist attractions . In fact, the World Travel Award recognized the place as the “World's Leading Tourist Attraction” in 2016. People flock to this place to learn about the ill-fated ocean liner through awards-winning galleries.

If you are visiting Belfast from Dublin, be sure to stop by Newgrange. This ancient Irish passage tomb is one of the three historic sites at the Brú na Bóinne complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

5. Giant's Causeway

Giant's Causeway

The unique view of hexagonal basalt stones at Giant's Causeway.  Photo by MNStudio - stock.adobe.com

Speaking of Northern Ireland tourist attractions, it would be a crime to not mention Giant's Causeway. This popular destination in Antrim County has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.

A stretch of coastline with 40,000 interlocking hexagonal columns lining up the icy sea is a sight to behold. Legend has it Giant's causeway was formed as a result of a dispute between a  Scottish giant and an Irish giant. Scientifically, the otherworldly shape of the stones is due to Intense volcanic activity from about 60 million years ago.

The best time to visit this attraction is at dawn and dusk when the place is shrouded in mist. With such a mysterious and magical atmosphere, it’s the perfect chance to snap a shot. The lighting and the landscape here are every photographer’s dream.

Another great attraction is the carrick-a-rede rope bridge. It is a 15 – 20 minute drive (give or take, depending on the number of tourists) from the Giant's Causeway. Thousands of people make the intrepid crossing over this almost  30 m (100 ft) high suspended bridge every year.

6. Skellig Michael

Skellig Michael

You can only reach Skellig Michael by boat. Photo by Michael on Unsplash

You should put Skellig Michael (Great Skellig Rock) on your list of the best places to visit in Ireland. This is one of the two places recognized as a World Heritage Site (the other is Brú na Bóinne) in the Republic of Ireland. Along with Muckross House and Gardens, Skellig Michael is a part of Ring of Kerry, a 79 km (49 miles) circular route that takes you around the County of Kerry.

Situated on the towering top of the Rock is St Fionan’s monastery. It is one of the oldest ancient Christian sites that you can see in its true form. In the sixth or seventh century, monks prayed and slept in stone huts, some of which remain to this day. Along with Little Skellig, this place was a haven for many Catholics during the Penal Laws after the monks left it.

As an effort to preserve the island, there is a restriction on the number of visitors per day (one trip each day, only 180 people allowed per day). So be sure to book a ticket in advance to experience the solace of the monks in ancient times.

7. Waterford

Waterford

Being the oldest city in Ireland, Waterford is one of Ireland's beautiful places you must visit in the Southeast region. It’s only a two-hour drive from Dublin, so this city is very easily accessible!

One of the most significant heritage sites is the Viking Triangle. Here in this destination, you get to learn about the 1100 years of history of Ireland’s Ancient East. It’s included in the “Epic Tour of Waterford,” a guided tour where participants get to explore the long history of Waterford in a thousand paces.

Waterford is most famous for its legacy of glassmaking. The House of Waterford Crystal, a must-see in your Waterford itinerary, lets travellers get behind the scenes and see how exquisite handmade crystals are made. This is also a rare chance to meet and chat with the crystal makers and glassblowers.

If you are a foodie, don’t miss out on Waterford Blaa (Irish rolls). We recommend coming to Walsh’s Bakehouse or Barron’s Bakery to purchase the most authentic ones. When you want to enjoy a cup of coffee or a meal while bathing in the sunshine, the granary café is the place to go. Located in the heart of Waterford, this café has an amazing light and atmospheric environment.

8. Blarney Castle & Gardens

Blarney Castle & Gardens

Blarney Castle welcomes visitors to explore hundreds of years of history all year round. Photo by Alex Grodkiewicz on Unsplash

When it comes to family-friendly places to visit in Ireland, Blarney Castle & Gardens is a must-see. This 600 years-old stone architecture in Cork County has survived the Irish Confederate Wars and Williamite War in Ireland. Now being a partial ruin, the area has become a famous tourist attraction.

If you are a history buff wanting to explore more ruins, consider taking a trip to the best cities and towns to discover in Germany like Frankfurt. Aside from modern historic sites, this country also has various magnificent Roman archaeological attractions.

Just outside the castle is Ireland's most famous stone: Blarney Stone. There is a tradition associated with this attraction. For centuries, people say that if you give the place a peck, you will be bestowed with the gift of eloquence and persuasiveness. Winston Churchill is among the historical figures who planted their kiss on the stone. Do you believe in this legend? There’s only one way to find out!

When the weather is just right, visitors could easily spend hours exploring the poison garden, carnivorous courtyard, etc. Even if you are a non-gardener, you will find yourself appreciating the remarkable grounds.

Galway

Take a stroll through Galway to experience the colourful and wonderful urban landscape. Photo by Justin Scocchio on Unsplash

Dublin is a great city, but Galway also has plenty to see and do. Originally a small fishing village in the 13th century, the place grew around a fortification built by the Anglo-Normans who captured it around 1100-1200. It has come a long way since then; Galway is now one of the most lively and most prominent places to go in Ireland.

This city in the West of Ireland is not only the country’s second-largest city but also has the nation's second-largest lake (Lough Corrib). To take in the active atmosphere, enjoy some divine foods and drinks at various incredible cafés, bistros and restaurants. Galway food tours are another great way to experience the local flavours.

If you want to do some sightseeing and shopping, Eyre Square is the perfect place. It’s also where you can explore the soul of the city. From sculptures to historic buildings, all tell the tales of their ancient past.

10. Connemara National Park

Connemara National Park

Connemara National Park is one the best place to explore the great outdoors in Ireland.  Photo by MNStudio - stock.adobe.com

If you ever set foot in Galway, you mustn’t miss Connemara National Park and its 2,000 hectares of mountains landscape, bogs, grasslands and forests. With stunning natural beauty at every turn, Connemara National Park is truly the place to go in Ireland.

For starters, consulting a Visitor centre is a great idea if you are feeling lost as a first-timer. The centre, like the park itself, is open all year round and free of charge. There are friendly staff, exhibitions and films provide great pointers to your self-start adventure.

This place is especially great for outdoor activities. There are a multitude of soft adventures you can partake in. For example, kayaking, hiking, rock climbing and Clay pigeon shooting are some of the most popular. There’s nothing like playing wonderful sports with breathtaking surroundings as your backdrop.

11. Ashford Castle

Ashford Castle

How thrilling it is to spend a night at an ancient attraction like Ashford Castle.  Photo by Eugene Remizov - stock.adobe.com

Wondering where to spend your night in County Mayo? How about getting some shut-eye at castle-turned-Hotel Ashford? It's Ireland's first and only to retain a Forbes Five-Star ranking for three consecutive years.

This is not just a hotel, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Everyone praises the attentive staff and food highly. The afternoon tea experience is phenomenal, too. Sipping your favourite cup of tea or having a delicious meal in the graceful Connaught Room with lake views is a must.

There is an impressive range of things to do on the estate. To name just a few, you can do falconry, golf, clay pigeon shooting and archery. When there’s so much to do, many guests can spend their entire day without leaving the place.

12. Wicklow

Wicklow

The gardens in Wicklow are just on another level. Photo by dudlajzov - stock.adobe.com

Located in the heart of the County of the same name, Wicklow town is one of Ireland's most beautiful places you must visit. The location is easily accessible with excellent train links from Dublin. Spending a day wandering around this small but full-of-life town is ideal.

The top attraction in this town is none other than Wicklow Gaol, a historic prison that has now transformed into a museum. Coming here, you will uncover a part of Ireland’s turbulent history through an immersive audiovisual tour telling tragic stories of the jailers and prisoners.

The County is known as the Garden of Ireland as it’s home to the most beautiful gardens in the nation. Mount Usher Gardens are among the most prominent and awe-inspiring ones. This is the real gem of an authentic ‘Robinsonian’ style garden. In fact, it is one of the three Irish gardens to earn The Good Gardens Guide's   top rating.

Just about a 40-minute drive from Wicklow is Wicklow Mountains National Park, another worth-visiting destination. Covering an area of approximately 20,000 hectares (49,421 acres), the park stretches from County Wicklow to County Dublin. It is popular with locals and tourists who are seeking recreation.

13. Killarney National Park

Killarney National Park is all about lakes and mountains, and anything in between.  Photo by Luis - stock.adobe.com

Boasting 10,000 hectares of scenic beauty, Killarney National Park is one of the most visited among Ireland’s beautiful places. There’s no better starting point to explore rugged mountainous County Kerry and its offering of spectacular lakes, woods and mountains than this park.

Standing close to the famed Muck Ross Lake is the 19th-century Victorian mansion Muck Ross House and Gardens. Initially, it was built in 1843 for Henry Arthur Herbert and his family. The place was then presented to the Irish Free State in 1932 and became Ireland’s first National Park.

Take a 7 km (4 miles) hike from the park, and you will reach the majestic Torc Waterfall. Approximately 70 feet (20 metres) high, the cascade waterfall will captivate any visitors who see its glory and beauty. Torc is at its best in the rainy season when you can expect a great show of nature's might.

There is an interesting story behind the waterfall’s name. It is said that a cursed man transformed into a wild boar roaming the place every night ('Torc' means 'Boar' in Irish). When a local farmer revealed his secret, the man burst into flames and disappeared into Devil's Punchbowl.

Wanting to do some road-tripping? Dingle Peninsula is one of the best places to visit in Ireland for that purpose. Iceland is best explored by car, and that especially rings true here. You can reach this place from Dublin via a 40-hour train ride.

Slea Head Loop, a 50 km circular route around Dingle’s main tourist places, is considered one of the best coastal drives in the world, and for good reasons. It is a part of Wild Atlantic Way, a 2,500 km (1553 miles) route that takes you through nine counties and three provinces in Ireland.

You can drive around the Dingle Peninsula in one day, but take your time to stop at the ruins, small towns, craggy cliffs and sandy coves. Inch Beach is a great starter and a destination to stretch your leg after the Ring of Kerry drive.

Another stop you must visit is Dunmore Head, where you can view Coumeenoole Beach. It is at the westernmost point of mainland Ireland and even the most westerly point in all of Europe! The beach here is, sadly, unsafe for swimming. Other places like Achill Island or Rossbeigh Strand are more suitable for that end.

15. Rock of Cashel

Rock of Cashel

Rock of Cashel is a cluster of buildings with historic significance.  Photo by Jenifoto - stock.adobe.com

Among Ireland's tourist attractions and monuments, the Rock of Cashel in County Tipperary shines as a prominent historic site. It is a spectacular group of mediaeval buildings that is about 1,000 years old. According to legends, it was at this place where St. Patrick converted the then King of Munster Aenghus to Christianity in the 5th century.

Now it’s no longer kings, archbishops or pilgrims but tourists that pass the hallway of this unique architecture. Within an hour and a half, everyone gets the chance to admire a round tower, a high cross, a Romanesque chapel, and more. You can opt for a 45-minute guided tour for a more thorough explanation of the history of the place.

One of the most intriguing buildings is Hore Abbey, a complex ruin just down the hill from the Rock. Being a sort of a hidden gem, it is not very crowded, just the chance to explore an ancient ruined monastery on your own.

Johor Gets Second Chance at Economic Take-off

This article was first published in The Edge Malaysia on May 24, 2024.

The excitement in Johor is palpable. The Sultan of Johor, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, has been sworn in as the new King of Malaysia, construction of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is proceeding apace, and the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) has ignited hope for closer cooperation on industrial developments and other economic issues between Malaysia and Singapore.

The idea of a special economic zone in Malaysia is not novel and Johor hosts two of the country’s five economic corridors, Iskandar Malaysia and the East Coast Economic Region. Within these corridors, special measures such as tax breaks, investment incentives, regulatory flexibility, trade facilitation and infrastructure support are provided to attract foreign direct investment.

However, these economic corridors have had limited success in uplifting Johor’s economy. Can the JS-SEZ be a game changer?

Emerging data centre hub

The recent influx of investments into Johor provides a hint of optimism. Johor emerged as the top investment destination in Malaysia in 2022 and came in fourth last year, after Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Most of these investments are in the services industry.

Johor has become a key hyperscale data centre hub for large technology firms, thanks to lower construction costs, cheaper utility tariffs and ample land. Johor has also benefited from Singapore’s decision in 2019 to enforce a moratorium on building new data centres due to energy sustainability concerns.

Notable investments in Johor include GDS Holdings’ RM14.33 billion data centres in Johor Bahru and Iskandar Puteri as well as YTL Power’s RM15 billion green data centre park in Kulai, not forgetting a potential partnership with Nvidia to develop artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Four challenges to overcome

Connectivity

The longstanding connectivity problem is a critical factor hindering economic development in Johor. The massive traffic congestion at the Johor-Singapore Causeway — one of the busiest border crossings in the world — must be addressed for the JS-SEZ to succeed.

More than 350,000 Malaysians commute to Singapore daily and they are often stuck in traffic for hours. The upcoming RTS Link, promising a five-minute journey between Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru and Woodlands North in Singapore, aims to alleviate the bottleneck with its capacity of up to 10,000 passengers an hour.

Expected to be operational by late 2026, the RTS may not be sufficient to address the congestion during peak hours as the number of commuters will continue to grow. In this regard, the proposed passport-free QR code system to expedite immigration clearance is essential.

The poor connectivity in and around southern Johor also needs to be tackled. The state government’s plan to integrate the Johor Bahru Light Rail Transit (LRT) network and the recently resurrected Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail (HSR) — both still in the proposal stage — with the RTS, will be central to improving connectivity in the JS-SEZ.

Talent exodus

Another critical factor impeding Johor’s growth is the outflow of talents to Singapore. Of the 1.86 million Malaysians who have migrated overseas as at 2022, 1.13 million reside in Singapore. With the anticipated increase in tech-related investments in Johor, the government must come up with effective measures to retain or bring back talents, including raising wages.

Upon its completion, the RTS could potentially exacerbate brain drain since it will be easier for Malaysians to travel for work in Singapore. The state government needs to strike a delicate balance between brain drain and increased connectivity.

Ease of doing business

Administrative inefficiencies and bureaucratic hurdles represent another obstacle. A priority for Singapore is the establishment of a one-stop business and investment service centre in Johor to facilitate the application process for Singapore firms to set up in the JS-SEZ. The participation of and coordination between the state government and local authorities would be vital to the development, including land administration, construction, utilities and transport.

Real estate development

Real estate dynamics constitute another focal point in Johor’s economic narrative. Johor’s property overhang is still at elevated levels despite the recent moderation. The RTS Link and JS-SEZ are expected to be major catalysts in attracting interest from investors to Johor.

Iskandar Puteri is a key flagship development zone in Iskandar Malaysia. The region aims to become a vibrant metropolis with priority service sectors such as education, tourism and leisure, arts, and health and wellness. The JS-SEZ, if encompassing Iskandar Puteri, will play an important role in attracting investors and businesses, particularly multinational corporations to establish their regional headquarters in Johor Bahru.

The development of the megaproject, Forest City, has stalled due to its flawed strategy of targeting affluent Chinese buyers, which has failed to work due in part to China’s currency controls and the Covid-19 pandemic. Initially targeted to house 700,000 residents across four reclaimed islands by 2035, the project has come to a halt amid low occupancy and cash flow challenges. Only half of one artificial island has been developed, with around 9,000 residents living in the 28,000 completed residential units.

The recent designation of Forest City as a Special Financial Zone (SFZ), aimed at attracting investment with incentives such as lower income tax and multiple entry visas, could revive investor interest. Like Iskandar Puteri, enhanced connectivity is key to its development. The realisation of the HSR project will be crucial, especially if it is realigned to run through Forest City.

Malaysia’s Shenzhen

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has touted the state as a possible Shenzhen with the establishment of the JS-SEZ. The realisation of this ambition requires more than mere rhetoric. Beyond addressing challenges on connectivity and talent, strategic planning and coordinated implementation, an unwavering commitment from the local authorities and the governments of Malaysia and Singapore will be required to unlock Johor’s economic potential and make the “Shenzhen vision” a reality.

Israel-Gaza latest: Deadly Rafah strikes do not cross red line, White House says; US suspends aid deliveries after pier damaged

The White House has said strikes on the southern Gaza city of Rafah both on Sunday and yesterday do not prompt the withdrawal of US military assistance to Israel. Meanwhile, the US has been forced to suspend aid deliveries into Gaza by sea.

Fighting in Gaza will likely go on for seven more months at least, Israel's national security adviser has said.

Tzachi Hanegbi said Israeli forces were in control of 75% of the Philadelphi corridor, a buffer zone along the border between Gaza and Egypt.

"Inside Gaza, the IDF [Israel Defence Forces] is now in control of 75% of the Philadelphi corridor and I believe it will be in control of it all with time. Together with the Egyptians, we must ensure weapon smuggling is prevented," he told Israel's public broadcaster Kan.

He added that he expected fighting in Gaza to continue throughout 2024 at least.

If you're on Instagram, it's an image you will likely have seen: orderly lines of tents stretching into the distance on dusty ground, white structures in the centre spelling out the words: "All eyes on Rafah."

On Instagram, a call to action to share the image also clocks the number of people who have added it to their stories: more than 37 million as of this morning.

On Sunday, an Israeli strike on the southern Gazan city of Rafah hit an area housing displaced Palestinians, setting their tents alight, according to Palestinian medics.

At least 45 people were killed, and footage verified by Sky News showed numerous bodies being pulled from the wreckage of destroyed buildings. In one video, a man can be seen carrying the body of a decapitated child.

The incident has reignited support for Palestinians on social media, with the "All eyes on Rafah" image shared by celebrities including Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan, singer-songwriter Kehlani, and one of India's top actors, Varun Dhawan.

Others, including pop star Dua Lipa, have shared different posts, with the words "All eyes on Rafah" included.

At least 36,171 Palestinians have been killed and 81,420 wounded since 7 October, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza.

It said 75 Palestinians have been killed and 284 injured in the past 24 hours.

Separately, the ministry called for ensuring safe routes for the immediate entry of fuel and medical aid to Rafah and northern Gaza, according to a statement carried by Hamas media, quoting spokesperson Ashraf Al-Qudra.

The spokesperson also called for the setting up of field hospitals in those areas and the urgent entry of medical teams.

For context: While some Israeli officials have sought to cast doubt on fatality figures from Gaza, a number of independent groups say they have proved to be largely reliable and broadly in line with those later produced by the UN and Israel itself.

Examination of data from previous Gaza conflicts - the Hamas-run health ministry's counts compared with the post-war United Nations analysis - shows that the initial data is largely accurate with, at most, a 10-12% discrepancy.

Three Israeli soldiers have been killed in combat in southern Gaza, the Israeli military has said, as it presses ahead with its offensive in Rafah.

Three more soldiers were badly wounded.

Israel's public broadcaster Kan said they were hurt by an explosive device set off in a building in Rafah.

Yesterday we reported that a ship had been targeted by three missiles off the coast of Yemen and was taking on water.

The bulk carrier Laax, a Marshall Islands-flagged vessel, "sustained damage" in the assault and later reported an "impact in the water in close proximity to the vessel", according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre.

"The crew are reported safe and the vessel is proceeding to its next port of call," it said.

Security firm Ambrey said the vessel reported by radio having "sustained damage to the cargo hold and was taking on water."

Last night the UKMTO reported the Laax "sustained further damage" in a second missile attack near Mokha in the Bab el Mandeb Strait.

The vessel reported being headed to port at Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.

Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis have launched repeated drone and missile strikes in the Red Sea region since November, later expanding to the Indian Ocean in what they say is solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

US Central Command said it destroyed five Houthi drones over the Red Sea amid the attacks.

Three police officers were injured and 40 people arrested during a pro-Palestine protest in Westminster last night.

One police officer was left with a serious facial injury after she was hit by a thrown bottle, while two officers sustained minor injuries.

The Metropolitan Police said the suspect who threw the bottle has not been identified but police are investigating.

The protest, which was organised by a coalition of groups including the Palestine Solidarity Group, began around 6pm and was required to end at 8pm, police said.

The majority of the crowd, between 8,000 and 10,000 people, left Whitehall without incident.

But a group of around 500 remained and police began making a number of arrests for failing to comply.

Police said some resisted arrest, which required officers to use force to remove those who had been arrested.

The protest then broke away, with the crowd marching to Bridge Street, outside Westminster Station, where police put up cordons to detain the group.

A police statement said they went into the crowd shortly before 10pm to arrest those suspected of leading the breakaway protest, with 40 people arrested for offences including breaking the Public Order Act, obstruction of a highway and assaults of emergency workers.

On the night of 26 May, an Israeli airstrike hit the neighbourhood of Tel al Sultan in Rafah.

At least 45 people were killed as structures in an area housing displaced Palestinians were set alight, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza.

The affected area is less than 200m from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency's compound in the north of Rafah.

Geolocated footage and satellite imagery shows the strike destroyed buildings immediately adjacent to a sign identifying Kuwaiti Al-Salam Camp 1.

While it is unclear whether the buildings are part of the camp, Kuwaiti Al-Salam Camp 1 is known to house Palestinians displaced by the ongoing conflict.

Over much of the conflict, the surrounding area has been occupied by tents and sheds housing displaced people.

In recent weeks, the number of these structures has decreased as Palestinians fled in advance of Israel's ground offensive in Rafah.

Read the full story here:

Israeli shelling and strikes have killed at least 37 people, most of them sheltering in tents outside the southern Gaza city of Rafah, according to witnesses, first responders and hospital officials.

The strikes yesterday hit the same area where attacks had triggered a deadly fire that swept through a camp for displaced Palestinians, killing at least 45 and drawing international outrage, they said.

The Israeli military suggested the blaze on Sunday may have been caused by secondary explosions, possibly from a Hamas munitions dump.

Shelling late on Monday and early yesterday hit Rafah's western Tel al Sultan district, killing at least 16 people, the Palestinian Civil Defence and the Palestinian Red Crescent said.

Seven of those killed were in tents next to a UN facility about 200m from the site of Sunday night's strike and fire.

Yesterday afternoon an Israeli drone strike hit tents near a field hospital by the Mediterranean coast west of Rafah, killing at least 21 people, including 13 women, according to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry.

Israel's military has denied striking the tent camp.

The strikes over the past few days have hit areas west of Rafah, which had not been ordered by the military to evacuate.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has called for a ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza, where millions face a humanitarian catastrophe.

"We desperately need a political solution that will allow us to have a ceasefire to get aid in," Kate Forbes, its president, said.

"We're ready to make a difference. We have to have access, and to have access there has to have a ceasefire."

She said she had seen the "atrocious" situation in Rafah during a visit in February, months before Israel launched its military assault on the southern Gaza city - where more than a million Palestinians forced to flee assaults on other parts of the enclave are sheltering.

"There was not enough housing. There was no water, there weren't enough sanitation toilets. We had a hospital with no equipment... and unfortunately what I was afraid of has happened, and that there wasn't going to be enough food," Ms Forbes said.

"I plead with the governments on all sides to negotiate a ceasefire so that we can get aid in.

"My job is to ensure that when it [a ceasefire] happens, we can give the aid that's necessary. And so they need to do their jobs so I can do my job," she added.

Welcome to our live coverage of the Israel-Hamas war and wider tensions in the Middle East.

Yesterday the Israeli military said an initial investigation into a strike that caused the deaths of 45 Palestinians in a tent camp in Rafah on Sunday was caused by a secondary explosion.

Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, the chief military spokesman, said the military fired two 17kg (37lb) munitions that targeted two senior Hamas militants.

He said the munitions would have been too small to ignite a fire on their own and the military is looking into the possibility that weapons were stored in the area.

The IDF later denied conducting a strike in a designated humanitarian area in al Mawasi in western Rafah on Tuesday.

Before we bring you today's coverage, here are more updates from the last 24 hours...

  • The US said the attacks of Rafah are not enough to prompt withdrawal of US military assistance to Israel;
  • The temporary pier built by the US to carry aid into Gaza by sea will be removed from the coast for repairs after bad weather damaged a causeway that is attached to the beach;
  • A video showing an Israeli hostage has been released by Islamic Jihad, the Hostages Families Forum Headquarters said. It shows 28-year-old Alexander Trufanov confirming his identity and saying he will allegedly speak about what happened to him and other hostages in Gaza;
  • A French left-wing MP who waved a Palestinian flag in the lower house of the country's National Assembly has been suspended for 15 days.
