A session with a vacation photographer in london.

London, the enchanting capital of England, is a city brimming with history, culture, and beautiful landscapes. As you embark on your memorable vacation, what better way to immortalise your experiences than by engaging the services of a professional vacation photographer? Whether you're exploring iconic landmarks like Big Ben and the Tower Bridge or strolling through the charming streets of Notting Hill, a session with a vacation photographer in London can elevate your travel memories to new heights.

The Power of Professional Vacation Photography

In the age of smartphones and selfies, the value of professional photography may sometimes be overlooked. However, when it comes to capturing the true essence of your vacation, a skilled photographer can make all the difference. A vacation photographer brings a unique perspective, technical expertise, and an artistic eye to every shot, ensuring that each moment is beautifully preserved for years to come.

The Benefits of a Session with a Vacation Photographer in London

best location for vacation photography in london

Immersion in the Local Culture

London is a city that pulsates with diverse cultures, traditions, and people. By hiring a vacation photographer, you gain not only a guide to the city's hidden gems but also someone who can help you connect with the local culture. They can suggest photogenic locations that encapsulate London's vibrant spirit and offer insights into the city's history, ensuring that your photos reflect the true essence of your visit.

Stress-Free Experience

Vacations are meant to be a time of relaxation and enjoyment. By entrusting your photography needs to a professional, you can focus on immersing yourself in the moment rather than worrying about capturing the perfect shot. A vacation photographer will take care of all the technical aspects, allowing you to be fully present and create lasting memories with your loved ones.

Personalised and Unique Shots

A professional vacation photographer possesses the ability to capture authentic moments that tell your personal story. Whether it's a candid family portrait , a stolen glance between partners, or a solo adventure through London's bustling streets, a professional photographer will tailor the session to reflect your personality and style. Each image will be a testament to the emotions and experiences you shared during your London vacation.

Planning Your Session

Research and Communication

Before embarking on your journey to London, take the time to research local photographers and view their portfolios. Look for photographers who specialise in vacation photography and have an impressive body of work that aligns with your vision. Once you have selected a photographer, engage in open communication to discuss your preferences, locations of interest, and any specific ideas or themes you have in mind. This collaboration ensures that your session is tailored to your unique vision.

Timing and Logistics

Planning your session in advance is essential to ensure availability and secure the best time slots for optimal lighting conditions. Discuss with your photographer the duration of the session, the number of locations you wish to visit, and any outfit changes you may desire. London offers a lot of stunning backdrops, including the lush greenery of Hyde Park , the architectural marvels of Westminster, and the vibrant street art in Shoreditch. Collaborate with your photographer to create an itinerary that captures the essence of London while accommodating your preferences.

Hidden Gems of London

While London boasts an array of iconic landmarks, a vacation photographer can guide you to lesser-known locations that offer a more intimate perspective of the city. From the cobblestone streets of Covent Garden to the colourful mews houses of Kensington, these hidden gems provide a backdrop that is both visually captivating and authentically London. By exploring these off-the-beaten-path spots, your vacation photographer will help you create a collection of images that truly reflect the spirit of the city and your personal journey.

The Session: A Journey Unveiled

On the day of your session, arrive early to your chosen meeting point, ensuring you have ample time to familiarise yourself with the photographer and discuss any last-minute details. Embrace the experience with an open mind, allowing the photographer to guide you through each location, capturing both posed and spontaneous moments. Trust their expertise, as they know how to make the most of the available light and surroundings to create truly remarkable images.

Cherish the Result Forever

After your session, the excitement continues as you eagerly await the final photographs. Depending on the photographer, you will receive a curated selection of high-quality images, carefully edited to enhance their visual appeal. These images will transport you back to the streets of London, evoking cherished memories and preserving the emotions felt during your vacation. From digital downloads to fine art prints and custom albums, explore the various options available to display and share your photographs with friends and family.

The Beauty of hiring a vacation photographer in London

The beauty of hiring a vacation photographer is that their work extends far beyond your actual vacation. While the session itself is a memorable experience, the photographs become a timeless treasure that you can revisit and share for generations to come. As years pass, these images will carry even greater sentimental value, serving as a visual diary of cherished memories and unforgettable moments in one of the world's most iconic cities.

10 best photography locations in London

London is one of the best photography locations in the world. In this guide, I round up the city's best spots for photos

London's Millenium bridge at night

There’s a reason that London is a favorite with tourists and photographers. It may not have the awe-inspiring views of a mountain range or the rough and rugged appeal of a seascape, but walking around London's streets with a camera can fill your day with endless subjects.

Here are 10 of the most interesting (in my opinion) places to visit and take photos in London, the capital city of the UK There are so many other places that can be added to this list. But that’s part of the fun. You can soon start to explore and start to find your own photo spots to add to the mix.

Check out our guide on how to shoot cityscapes and urban landscapes if you need more inspiration and advice. These low-light cameras are also ideal for taking photos during the golden and blue hours when the city comes alive.

London photo locations

1. Tower Bridge

Sure, it has been photographed millions of times, and you may have to bat away constant harassment from the “self-appointed tripod police”, but it’s worth it! Because in beautiful light and a dramatic sky, you just can’t beat a photo of Tower Bridge. The wonderful thing about Tower Bridge is that it can be photographed from both sides of the river and either side of the bridge, so you can shoot it at any time of the day.

London photo locations

2. St. James' Park

Whilst the park itself is certainly worthy of being on this list, for me the time that makes this location so iconic is during the changing of the guards on The Mall. Capture a photo when the sun is shining, the trees are green, and the Union Jack is hung on the sides of the road, and you can’t get a photo that’s more “British” than that!

London photo locations

3. Borough market

The transformation in Borough Market over the last 20+ years has been remarkable. It is now widely recognized as one of the best food markets in the world with an array of products and foods from around the world cooked fresh in front of you. This also means there is immense photo potential for anyone with a passion for food or environmental portraits. The only downside is that the market is covered and so you will have to be careful with your shutter speed to ensure it is fast enough to avoid camera shake.

London photo locations

4. Brick Lane

There is a grittiness about Brick Lane that you won’t find in most of London these days. Wondering along the road you can marvel at the ever-changing street art on display. And if you are lucky you may even catch an artist or two painting the walls. The incredible artworks lend themselves perfectly for you to play around with some street photography using the artworks as a background and waiting for interesting characters to pass by.

London photo locations

5. Greenwich Park

This park in the east of London is home to the National Maritime Museum (a worthwhile photography location), but the real prize here is capturing a photo of the London skyline (or more specifically Canary Wharf) from the small hill in the park. On a beautiful sunny evening, the place will be packed with onlookers and photographers hoping to capture a stunning cityscape shot.

London photo locations

6. The Millenium Bridge

Even though the Millennium Bridge is one of the top “photo spots” in London, in my opinion, it’s not a particularly pretty bridge. But it’s the combination of the bridge and St Paul’s Cathedral that makes this such a popular photography location. Whether it’s from the bridge itself or from underneath the bride (along the river), the Millennium Bridge acts as a perfect leading line to St Paul’s Cathedral which presents plenty of different composition opportunities.

London photo locations

7. Tate Modern

Just next to the Millennium Bridge you will find the Tate Modern. While the building itself has some photographic interest (especially photos taken from the bridge or the gallery at the top of St Paul’s Cathedral), the real photography highlight is climbing up to the viewing area of the Tate Modern for elevated shots of St Paul’s Cathedral and the city skyline. What makes this photo location even better is that it’s free to enter so you can come back over and over again if the conditions are not right.

London photo locations

8. St Paul’s Cathedral

This is one of my favorite buildings to photograph in London. There are so many compositions all around this London landmark that you can spend all day just photographing it. I have already mentioned the views from the Tate Modern and around the Millennium Bridge. Closer in you will be able to include foreground points of interest like red buses or even people. Another great location is from One New Change where you can find interesting reflections of the Cathedral in the glass of the shops. Or head up on the elevators to the top floor for an eye-level shot of the dome of the Cathedral.

London photo locations

9. Monument

The Monument to the Great Fire of London stands at a modest 61 meters. The monument itself is worthy of a few photos, but for me, the real prize at this location is when you climb the 311 steps inside the Monument to get to the outdoor viewing gallery at the top for a fantastic unique elevated view of Tower Bridge.

London photo locations

10. Camden Market

London has no shortage of markets and Camden Market is another that is worthy of photography. The narrow pathways and stalls are interesting to photograph, as are the local vendors and even the public who browse the market. Some of the most picturesque parts of the market are covered so you may want to take a travel tripod with you.

The Churchill Arms, Notting Hill

The Churchill Arms is on Kensington Church Street in West London. My 10 top tips for photographing London

London is one of the most photographed cities in the world and with so many inspiring views from epic cityscapes to ornate details, after just a short time out with your camera, you will be hard beat to come away without a good crop of photos. That being said, with just a few useful pointers that will help you plan and inspire while out in the city, you can increase your chances of going from taking a few OK photos to taking a few great photos of London.

One thing to note before we dive in is that although some of these tips are specific to photographing London such as some of the locations I mention, most of the tips can be used in any city or town you happen to be in so just because you might not be photographing London, it doesn’t mean you can’t take some of these ideas and apply them locally to you.

So, let’s not waste any time and jump into my 10 top tips for photographing London!

#1 Check where and when you can use a tripod in London

This photography tip is an important one because the use of tripods in London is to some, a contentious topic. Experiences and therefor opinions of when and where tripods can be used will vary so although I won’t be able to say definitively what is or isn’t ok, I will be able to give you some general advice to help you manage this ambiguous subject.

There are some well-known areas of London that have some very strict “no tripod” rules such as the area around County Hall and the London Eye near Westminster Bridge as well as More London and City Hall over by Tower Bridge, as these are all technically private land. There are, however, plenty of places you can still use a tripod to capture some great shots along the Thames. Directly in front of the Tower of London on the north side and the areas around Tate Modern and the Millennium Bridge are good examples to start.

Top Tips for Photographing London - A photo of my camera on a tripod in London taken by Trevor Sherwin

My personal experience has overall been positive. I have taken my tripod into London countless times and can count on one hand how many times I have been approached about the use of my tripod. I tend to stick to the rules and I’m aware of the absolute no-go areas so, overall, I have learned to work around the restrictions avoiding any necessary telling off from the local security guards. Check my advice below so you can be as informed as possible when heading into London with your tripod and remember, the vast majority of outdoor places are ok with tripods providing you act responsibly.

Research the location

Before you travel, do your research. Check the owner’s website if they have one or ask the photography community. Knowing the rules can help if you get approached by someone less informed and in some situations, enables you to reasonably and respectfully stand your ground if you know tripods are allowed.

Look out for the tripod police

If you are unsure of the rules and there are no signs, go ahead and set the tripod up but always be ready to be approached and told to put the tripod away.

Avoid confrontation

If approached, just be polite and respond appropriately. The guards are just following instruction and even if you come across a wise guy, the best thing to do is move on and avoid any unnecessary confrontation.

Be considerate to others

Even if tripods are allowed, remember that you have no right of way over anyone else so try to keep out of the way to avoid your tripod being bumped or worse, someone tripping on one of the tripod legs. Photographers have a hard-enough rep and we certainly don’t want it to be made any worse.

#2 Embrace the grey weather when photographing London

Top Tips for Photographing London - A cloudy photo of the City of London by Trevor Sherwin

You may notice as you read this post that all the photos have a common grey, almost monochromatic look to them. This was a deliberate choice I made to keep the images consistent but also show that London can still look great in what most consider bad light. London gets cloudy. I mean, like, all the time and anyone who visits the city has a pretty good chance of experiencing this pretty dull weather for themselves. So when heading out with your camera, you have to keep an open mind as to the style of the photos you will likely walk away with and instead of being put off or unmotivated, try to embrace the weather, seek out some interesting shapes and lines and let the darker clouds give your photos a sense of mood rather than let them defeat your inspiration.

In this previous blog post, I talked about how a wet, miserable day in London turned out to be a surprisingly positive shoot: Capturing London on a Cloudy Day .

#3 Photograph London’s financial district on the weekend and don’t forget to look up!

Like most major cities around the world, London has a financial district, well actually it has two. One in the Square Mile (The City of London) and the other over at Canary Wharf just east of the city. The thing about most of these financial companies is that they tend not to work weekends and as such, this part of London pretty much shuts down over the weekend which for street photographers is less fun but if you want to capture some of these cool skyscrapers and empty London streets, it’s a great location to spend a few hours having the place nearly all to yourself.

Top Tips for Photographing London - A look-up photo taken in the City of London by Trevor Sherwin

While surrounded by all these tall buildings, why not have a go at some “Look Up” shots like this one here. Not an original idea but with the ever-changing London skyline, there is always a new view to be captured and best yet, you can take these types of photos any day of the week!

#4 Get out early to photograph London’s popular tourist hot spots

London can get really busy, particularly at the weekend around the popular tourist hot spots and if you are looking to capture the location free of too many people, then you really must avoid daytime and evening visits. Instead, set your alarm for 4 or 5 am and get out to these popular locations before most of the tourists have even sat down for their hotel breakfast.

Top Tips for Photographing London - An early morning photo of Covent Garden in London taken by Trevor Sherwin

London’s great for an early start as public transport will be running and you can get anywhere quickly enough. In addition, you get to be out during the very best time of day for photography as the light is always best in the morning, it’s so much quieter and you have the entire place to yourself for a short while.

#5 Get up high for free, without booking and photograph London’s rooftops

Although there are plenty of opportunities to get some cityscape photos from high up above the streets of London, many come at a cost for entry or requirement to buy food or drink but there are a few rooftop photo spots in London that don’t cost or even require advance booking and you can just rock up on the day and take advantage of some of the epic views of the city and start shooting. Below are my top three to get you started.

Top Tips for Photographing London - The view of London taken from the rooftop terrace atop the Garden at 120 by Trevor Sherwin

One New Change ( Find it on Google Maps )

Great for fantastic high-up and close-up shots of St Paul’s Cathedral.

Tripods allowed? No.

Tate Modern Viewing Platform ( Find it on Google Maps )

Great for elevated views of the modern financial district in the city and fantastic views of St Paul’s Cathedral from across the river.

The Garden at 120 ( Find it on Google Maps )

Great for a framed view across West London like the one posted above. Also, there are great rooftop views of Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf and St Mary Axe (aka The Gherkin).

Tripods allowed? Yes.

#6 Photograph the London skyline by walking the South Bank

My absolute favourite thing to do with my camera in London is to walk the South Bank between Westminster and Tower Bridge. This stretch of the Thames Path is popular for good reason as you get to experience some of the best views of London’s skyline available. Although the walk itself isn’t too long, you do need to allow a couple of hours at least if you visit for the first time as you will no doubt stop to capture all the great views as you go.

Top Tips for Photographing London - The view of St Paul’s Cathedral from the South Bank taken by Trevor Sherwin

Along with the classics such as Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral and the high rises over in the city, the South Bank offers some great opportunities to capture some street photography and architecture too so, like much of London, it has something for all types of photographer.

Bonus Tip: If you have time, walk back along the North Bank. Although a little quieter, you can still grab some great cityscape photos of The Shard, Tate Modern and the London Eye.

#7 Walk London’s streets and photograph the hidden views

Next up in my top tips for photographing London is to get out on foot and find some of the hidden views of London. They are dotted all over the place and provide great opportunities to take cool, framed photos of some of London’s architectural icons.

Top Tips for Photographing London - The photo of the view looking down Lovat Lane, towards The Shard taken by Trevor Sherwin

The centre of London isn’t a huge place and if you're prepared to get your walking boots on and wander the streets you can be rewarded with some great views of the city. Unless I have a planned shoot and need to get somewhere in good time, I would rather wander the streets with my camera instead of missing potential opportunities by rushing across the city on public transport. If you’re short of time, I’ve listed a few of the more popular backstreets that provide great views of London which also include links to Google Maps to help you find them.

Lovat Lane ( Find it on Google Maps )

This cobbled street provides a great foreground for this fantastic view of the Shard from across the river.

Watling Street ( Find it on Google Maps )

A great view of St Paul's Cathedral where you can make use of the buildings that flank the street to frame the cathedral and the yellow painted lines which provide some great lead-in lines.

St Helen’s Place ( Find it on Google Maps )

This is a cute little street hidden amongst the high-rise buildings in the city and provides some classic London architecture with a great view of St Mary Axe (The Gherkin) which towers over where you stand.

Those were three of the more popular hidden views of London but there are so many more which can be found as you wander the street so if you have time, grab some comfy shoes and head out to explore.

#8 Shoot London, whatever the weather

Number 8 in my top tips for photographing London is a bit of an extension of tip #2 as it also talks about the weather conditions but this time, it’s all about having some fun and shooting in the rain.

“ Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass...It’s about learning to dance in the rain. ”

Just like the grey, cloudy weather, there’s always a good chance that you’ll get rained on when in London so my top tip is to embrace the conditions as much as you or your gear will allow so you can capture some really cool shots during or just after the rain.

The photo below is a great example of how the scene changes in the rain. The wet cobbled street in front of the Tower of London provides this cool reflective surface making for a much more interesting foreground.

Top Tips for Photographing London - A photo of the wet cobbled path outside the Tower of London taken by Trevor Sherwin

After mistakenly leaving my weather-sealed camera at home, I took a chance and went for a walk into London after dark to take photos in the rain which you can read all about here: On Location | Photographing London With The Fuji XF16mm F2.8 .

There are endless opportunities to get creative by taking photos in the rain such as reflections in puddles or shooting through streaky wet windows so don’t let it put you off and grab your raincoat and hit the streets whatever the weather.

#9 Add people for interest and scale when photographing London

London boasts some of the tallest buildings in Europe but it can sometimes be challenging for those taking the photos to portray the scale and “epicness” of the city to those viewing the image, so, tip number nine is to try including people as a familiar point of reference that will allow the viewer to grasp just how big (or small) the objects in your photo really are. Including just one person, like in the photos below, can add just enough interest, mystery and scale to your cityscape photos without them looking overly cluttered and distracting.

Top Tips for Photographing London - A photo of a solitary figure in front of London’s famous National Gallery by Trevor Sherwin

Referring back to previous tips in this post, including just a single person in your composition in one of the busiest cities on the planet can be a tad challenging so as per tip #3, hit the city at the weekend when there are fewer workers around or tip #2 by getting up and out early when most people are still waking up. By doing this, it gives you the best chance of avoiding the crowds and capturing that solitary figure to help you portray the scale in your photos.

#10 Do your research before heading out to take photos in London

This final tip is about what to do before a shoot. Whether you have a particular location and type of photo you want to capture, or you like to just head out into the streets to see what photo opportunities jump out at you, you can always increase your chances of coming away from a shoot with a few good shots if you prepare to some degree.

Scout the location to get the best compositions

If you are after a specific shot of London and have limited time, research the location online before heading out. Use Google Maps, Flickr or Instagram to understand the best place to stand so you don’t miss the best light wandering around searching for that killer angle and not being able to find it fast enough. My website also has lots of London based articles to view and gather useful tips. Check out two of my articles below.

My top 10 Photography Spots in London

Check the venue information

Check opening times and like in tip #1 above, check the rules and regs they have. Not everywhere is photographer friendly and knowing this before you head out may well save a wasted trip.

Check the weather and conditions

Check the weather before you head out! The conditions, wind direction or angle of the sun can all affect the final image and, in most cases, can make or break the shot. Also, knowing the weather conditions will help ensure you head out with the right clothing and camera gear so you’re not standing there soaked through because you didn’t bring your raincoat rushing your shots so you can get back inside.

Bonus Tip: Stay safe and have fun

It should go without saying but please do not take your safety for granted. Photographers tend to carry quite a bit of valuable gear and not all areas of every city are safe to wander alone so, whatever you do, be discrete, take care of yourself and where possible, take a friend with you, especially at night.

That’s it. My top 10 tips for photographing London has come to an end. I do hope this article comes in useful for anyone looking to come and photograph London in the future or as mentioned earlier, using the transferable tips to photograph your local town or city wherever you live.

If you have any tips you would like to share, feel free to drop them in the comments below so everyone can take advantage and get the very best images when out photographing London.

10. Photography In London: The Palace of Westminster

The palace of is an iconic building not just in London, but around the world. You can photograph it in various ways, and from several locations.

  • Westminster bridge – You can take an iconic photo of the palace of Westminster from the bridge. It’s a great opportunity to take a long exposure photo with bus light trails passing through the photo. Or use a shorter exposure juxtapose a London bus against the palace.
  • The south bank of the Thames – The Palace sits on the north bank of the river Thames. One of the better angles to photograph the building from is the south bank. Just around the corner from Westminster bridge.
  • Detail photos – This building has one of the world’s most famous clock towers, Big Ben. The name actually derives from the bell inside the tower. The photograph will be of the clock that sits at the top of this tower. Other detail photos might include the exterior walls. Or the famous statues of people against those walls.

9. Tower Bridge

After the houses of Parliament, this bridge is London’s most well known site. There are several excellent angles to photograph this bridge from.

  • On the bridge – A very popular photo to take is traffic light trails going through the archways of the bridge. Those arches make a great frame for the photo. The bridge also provides a nice viewpoint to photograph the Shard on the south bank. And the tower of London on the north bank.
  • The north bank – This is a really popular photo. Include the dolphin statue and the Tower Bridge in the background. The statue is on the same side as the Tower of London, and is just a short walk away.
  • The south bank – There are some nice ways to compose a photo of Tower Bridge from the south bank. Sunrise photos of the bridge are also a good option from here, or the nearby London bridge.

8. Coca-Cola London Eye

This was a relative newcomer to the London skyline at the turn of the millennium. Now it’s beginning to feel like part of the furniture. The giant Ferris wheel lends itself to a number of photography techniques .

  • Inside the capsule – It’s popular to take Instagram portraits inside the capsule. Get a wide angle lens on your DSLR though, and photograph the capsule just in front of yours. Press the shutter just as the Ferris wheel begins to descend. Try to fit a capsule, and the palace of Westminster in the same frame.
  • Get the whole scene – Photographs of the entire Ferris wheel are great as well. There is a line of trees leading up to the London Eye, and it provides a great leading line. Or why not photograph the wheel from the north bank of the Thames?
  • Add some creativity – The London Eye makes an ideal subject for  zoom burst photos. Use a zoom lens to zoom into the central area of the wheel, and then zoom out to create the photo.

7. The London Underground

6. Borough Market

London has many markets, so picking one for photography is tough . These locations are great for street photography, photos of merchandise, and wider establishment photos. Borough Market has a very photogenic wrought iron roof. That’s one of the big reasons why photographers enjoy coming here.

Other Notable Markets

5. St Paul’s Cathedral

This cathedral was designed by Christopher Wren as a replacement for the old St Paul’s. That one burnt down during the fire of London. It’s not possible to photograph inside the building. You need a special permission to do so. It has a beautiful and very photogenic exterior though, dominated by the large dome. There are several ways in which you can photograph this building, the two most popular are as follows.

  • The millennium footbridge – This is the bridge that leads away from St Paul’s, and towards the Tate Modern. You can get nice photos by aiming straight along the bridge. You can also walk off the bridge and down onto the south bank. Compose your photo with the bridge leading the eye towards St Paul’s.
  • One New Change – At the back end of the cathedral you can find a location where a modern shopping center can be juxtaposed against the cathedral. This is a favourite shot of St Paul’s with the reflections coming off the windows.

4. From The Shard

3. Buckingham Palace

It goes without saying that your photo of Buckingham Palace will be of the exterior of the building. It’s a fairly standard photo and composition. Aim to arrive early to both avoid the crowds and get the morning light at a nice angle. What most people visit the palace for is the changing of the guard.

2. The British Museum

London has lots of top class museums and galleries , so picking one out is difficult. The British Museum stands out from a photography perspective . That’s because of the photo you can take there juxtaposing the new modern roofing against the older buildings. The photograph angle that people aim to take can be found near the entrance, and up two flights of stairs. Now you’ll have a view over the British Museum. You’ll need a good wide angle lens to properly capture the entire scene. Beyond this angle there are other photos you can take in other parts of the museum. Not all parts of the museum are open to photography so take care what you photograph.

Other Museums and Galleries

1. St James’ Park and Green Park

London has a number of parks offering a little escape from the urban jungle. St James’ Park, and the nearby Green Park are two great ones. They’re right in the center of London, and very close to Buckingham palace. These parks offer opportunities to take portraits against natural backgrounds . And to take big scene setting photos that have a lot of green in them. St James’ Park also offers the added feature of a pond that runs the length of it.

Tips for Better London Photography

Getting good photos while you travel is all about good preparation, and taking the right equipment with you. Here are some tips to ensure your London photos turn out great.

  • Research – Make a list of photos you’d like to take, and think about when the best time to visit these locations is. Articles like this one will help you to that end.
  • Take a tripod – The best results are going to happen when you have a tripod. For cityscapes and architecture photography. you should use digital blending . A tripod will also allow you to take self and group portraits . Some locations don’t allow tripods though, so find out which ones do ahead of time.
  • Use variety – Think about the types of photos you’ll be taking. It’s best to get a balance. Try and take a mix of portraits , landscapes , detail photos and some more creative concepts .
  • The right lens – The workhorse lens for your travel photography is going to be a wide angle lens. It’s worth having a telephoto zoom with you as well. Some photos work better with lens compression . Finally take a good prime lens for street and portrait photography, such as a 50mm .

London is a huge sprawling city. It will take you a bare minimum of five days to properly explore it as a photographer. Having a list of photographs and locations to work from will help focus your mind. This will give you the best results. You can have a great time in London, and come away with some awesome photos. Plan that trip, and get the best photos you can! Have you already visited the UK’s capital? What was your experience, and did you have a favourite place to photograph? As always please share your thoughts, opinions and photos in the comments section to this article.

A busy Oxford street, one of the instagrammable places in London

Quick Links to Post Content

Oxford Street

Red telephone boxes, red double-decker buses and black cabs in the collective imaginary are everything London is about. Of course you don’t want to get back home from your trip to London without an iconic shot, right?

Oxford Street is the perfect place to go to if you are looking for wide roads, a busy street and lots of red double-decker buses.

Here you will find a convenient pedestrian sidewalk in between lanes for you to take the perfect Instagram shot, without risking to get run over.

In case you have brought a good tripod with you, try your hand at long exposure shots of the moving traffic or of the red buses. You will be surprised by the good results!

Regent street with a red bus, one of the places to photograph in London

Regent street

If you’re in Oxford Street, then walk over to Regent Street , it’s just around the corner.

Located in the West End, it’s one of the most famous streets in the City. Here you will find super famous, trendy shops like Liberty , Anthropologie , Nespresso or Apple which represent also interesting places to photograph in London.

But who said you can’t also do some shopping while you’re there? Just sayin’, I absolutely don’t have a compulsive shopping issue !

Colorful pagoda in London's Chinatown on a sunny day

Many of the people who are planning to visit London won’t add Chinatown to their itinerary. Some don’t even know that London actually has a Chinatown, which is a pity!

The area is not only a great spot if you’re looking for some awesome Asian food, but it’s also full of amazing instagrammable spots.

You will find the great entrance gate (actually it’s the largest Chinese gate in Great Britain ) not too far away from Soho or Leicester Square , and if you’re lucky enough to be there for the annual Chinese New Year Celebrations , be prepared to gape at the magnificence!

Chinatown is easy to explore on foot , as it’s a relatively small area and some streets are pedestrianised. You will find streets and buildings richly decorated with Chinese symbols like dragons and red lanterns, that give an insight into Chinese culture and religion.

Because this area can be particularly crowded (especially around lunch and dinner time), make sure to arrive early in the morning for some good shots!

Scooters at Portobello Road Market, one of the most interesting places to photograph in London

Portobello Road

I already told you about Portobello Road in my budget itinerary for London . It’s probably one of the most instagrammable places in London.

Famous for the cute colorful houses, and for a very interesting market that attracts a number of curious and tourists, it has a huge downside. While the place is absolutely beautiful, it can be also assaulted by hordes of instagrammers.

A good option to take shots that won’t become yet another copy of what other people are doing, is to wake up extra early to be there when no one else is around (yet).

Find your own style and mind the cute details. Like a nice bicycle in front of a pink house, the yellow flowers blooming from the bushes in springtime, or even the occasional cat strolling around.

Flowy dresses and floppy won’t necessarily be a bad thing, but aim for originality!

View of the colorful houses in Notting Hill (London)

Notting Hill

Are you also fan of the romantic movie “ Notting Hill ” with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant? Well, then while you are going to Portobello Road, make sure you stop around, to find a few of the places where they filmed it!

Because so many people just walk through this area to get to the colorful houses, it can be considered one of the very underestimated photography locations in London.

But in my humble opinion, I quite like the pristine houses and the beautiful architecture of Notting Hill , for almost every kind of shot (ex. fashion, lifestyle, travel photography).

If you’re lucky you might find also a couple of nice vintage cars parked in front of such houses that will give your pictures the extra kick.

Yet make sure not to invade anyone’s privacy by walking to someone’s doors or into someone else’s garden, please!

Tower Bridge seen from the South bank, one of the best photo spots in London

Tower Bridge from More London Place (London Bridge City)

Tower Bridge is definitely one of the iconic landmarks in London that you want to take pictures of. But finding the best angle can be a bit tricky.

Maybe it’s one of the stereotypical postcards of London that everyone has, but I don’t think it’s absolutely a bad thing, you know? Some places are beautiful no matter what!

More London , also named London Bridge city , is a development area on the South bank of the river Thames, full of offices.

While the area has some nice views, one of the best is on the Tower Bridge, seen from “ More London Place “, which indicates the buildings 1 and 6.

If you’re visiting in spring or summer, and it’s not too busy, you can enjoy the view on deck chairs or eating delicious goodies from the local market stalls.

Borough Market is in fact pretty close, so you can definitely grab a bite for lunch there and eat it at More London Place, watching the magnificent Tower Bridge!

Female influencer taking pictures of Tower brige's architecture

Tower Bridge… from the bridge!

You’ve probably seen everywhere these beautiful shots of the Brooklyn Bridge in NYC… from the bridge itself. Then why not making an European version of that view on Tower Bridge in London?

While I know some of you don’t like to walk too much and prefer to use the London tube , I promise that this time it’s worth the effort.

Walking on Tower Bridge gives you an idea of the size of this iconic landmark, and because of the facelift, terminated in 2012, it’s even more colorful, all in baby blue and white. Just thinking that on our first visit to London there was still the “old paint” I feel… old! Gah!

In the evening the LED lights over the bridge make it even more beautiful: maybe you could consider cruising the Thames to see it also from above?

St. Paul's Cathedral from Millennium Bridge is one of the popular London photo spots

St Paul’s Cathedral

St. Paul’s Cathedral is one of my favorite landmarks in London. Especially if we visit in Spring, because of the cute pink flowers all around: it’s one of the best London photography spots.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a “bad” picture of St. Paul’s Cathedral out there, so you can shoot wherever you want. Yet I have a couple of tips that you might find useful.

If you are a Harry Potter fan you probably know that Millennium Bridge, right in front of St. Paul’s Cathedral, is the bridge that the Death Eaters knock down at the beginning of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince .

You can go there early in the morning or, if you are lucky enough to find yourself mostly alone at the golden hour , try to frame St. Paul’s Cathedral with the bridge. You can also kneel down or lower your camera almost to the floor to take a more creative picture.

Another very instagrammable spot is from One New Change . I’m sure you’ve seen on Instagram the cool pictures with the dome framed between the shiny mirror-like windows of the mall, right?

… and while you’re there, you can always do some shopping… I didn’t say that!

Millennium bridge in London seen from Southbank at sunset

Millennium Bridge

The Millennium Bridge will let you walk from St. Paul’s Cathedral , on the north bank, to the Tate Modern and the Shakespeare’s Globe  in Southwark.

This steel suspension bridge is definitely very instagrammable, wherever you photograph it from.

Aside from using it to frame a beautiful view of St. Paul’s Cathedral, you can also take pictures of the other riverbank, and of the Tate Modern.

I like those pictures that you can shoot from the side of the bridge, using part of it as a “line” that draws the attention of those looking at it towards the Cathedral.

The Coca Cola London Eye is one of the photography locations London is famous for

Coca Cola London Eye

The Coca-Cola London Eye is one of the London photography spots you don’t want to miss.

Just like Millennium bridge or a few other iconic landmarks, it’s almost impossible to take bad pictures of this beautiful ferris wheel. Even when the sky is grey and dull!

Whether you take pictures of the pods (or from the pods), or by the nearby pedestrian bridge, taking in also Westminster and the Big Ben , you are going to get great shots.

We generally like the big ferris wheels and have been also on the High Roller at the LinQ in Las Vegas (the tallest one in the world!), so we can tell that they are very pretty in every picture, whether you decide to hop in one of the pods or not!

The only thing that bothered us on our last visit to London was… the crowds ! Ugh!

During the weekend this area can be a real nightmare. Unless you take pictures from below, using the sky as background, it’s almost impossible to take a few good shots without the hundreds of people coming and going.

In the evening it’s even more crowded, so my suggestion (again) is to go there early in the morning , and to avoid the weekends.

Piccadilly Circus in London with red buses and the huge Daktronic display

Piccadilly Circus

Piccadilly Circus is a road junction at London’s West End. Built to connect Regent Street with Piccadilly, it has become also a place for those who love Harry Potter.

In fact here they filmed one of the most memorable scenes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows , where we see Harry, Hermione and Ron rushing through London’s West End.

When me and Aldo visited it at night, we felt the same thrill we had in Times Square (NYC): like stepping into a Blade Runner scene! At Piccadilly you will in fact find a huge ultra-high definition curved Daktronics display, first turned on by the end of October 2017 .

While it’s very cool to see at night, it can be also particularly crowded. If you want to try your hand at a night shot you will need a tripod, but I’m not sure you’ll be able to take your sweet time. It could get knocked off by someone.

You’re welcome to try, if you’re very quick at setting your camera, but my suggestion is to come here during the day to take pictures of the beautiful buildings, and then to return in the evening to see how cool it can be all lit up.

The Big Ben and Houses of Parliament in London (England)

The Big Ben and Houses of Parliament (from South Bank)

Even with the Big Ben all wrapped up while they are renovating it, you can still take beautiful pictures that will become some kind of memento for the future. Just think that last time this iconic clock went silent was about 157 years ago !

You can take beautiful pictures of Houses of Parliament (if you have time, touring the Houses of Parliament can be amazing) and the Big Ben from South Bank , to avoid the crowds usually shooting from the London Aquarium or the London Dungeon museum .

To make it even more creative and instagrammable, make sure to frame your picture with the arch of the nearby under-passage!

Natural History Museum in London early in the morning

Natural History Museum

As I already told  you, my mom is a huge fan of the National History Museum in London . The architecture of this building is stunning, and if you head to the main hall, you will enjoy breathtaking views down the staircases.

The entrance is free and much like all the other instagrammable landmarks in London, I suggest you to avoid the weekends as much as possible, because the museum can be very crowded. If you can’t do that, then make sure to arrive early in the morning to be among the first to enter!

You already know that London around Christmas is absolutely amazing , right? Well, the National History Museum adds even more beauty, with lights and an ice rink!

Courthouse Doubletree Hilton

Courthouse Hotel

Are you looking for an iconic building as a background for one of your fashion shoots? The Courthouse , a boutique hotel, is close to Oxford Street, Regent Street and Carnaby Street .

Surrounded by amazing shops and famous theatres, it offers the perfect solution.

The beautiful architecture screams luxury and elegance, it’s close to a few of the London photography spots I mentioned in this post, and thus easy to reach also if you don’t have too much time.

If you are very lucky, you might also find a British black cab or a vintage car on the outside, making it an even more perfect shooting location!

Drone shot of Royal Albert Hall in London at night

Royal Albert Hall

In case the other spots are too crowded, another one of the best places to photograph in London is the Royal Albert Hall .

This famous concert hall is often snubbed in favour of more “ recognizable ” buildings. Yet the distinctive red bricks and the architecture make this one one of the easily recognisable landmarks in London (if you know at least something about this beautiful British city, aside from the Big Ben).

For those of you who love musical facts and venues like me, Pink Floyd held an unforgettable concert at the Royal Albert Hall on June 26, 1969. After shooting cannons, nailing things to the stage, and having a man in a gorilla suit roam the audience, they were banned from ever playing in the Hall again .

A portion of the pipe organ recording from that night is included on Pink Floyd’s album “ The Endless River “.

Family walking towards Tate Modern on the Millennium bridge in London

Tate Modern

This huge modern art gallery is one of London’s most celebrated jewels and one of the most interesting London photo spots.

The former Bankside Power Station now houses an impressive permanent collection of international, modern and contemporary art.

The entrance is free , and you can bring your camera with you inside, unless there’s a temporary exhibition. So you will be able to take pictures on the outside, with the red bricks building in the background, or inside, while you enjoy beautiful art.

I suggest you to go to the terrace on the tenth floor for a 360-degree view: it’s priceless!

Harrods mall in London with the iconic underground sign at its corner

Even if Harrods is crazy expensive, it still represents a “landmark” in London. It’s in fact the most iconic shopping mall and while you’re there, if you visit the food hall, you might be able to sample some delicious dishes from all over the world.

The outside is beautiful and perfect for Instagram pictures. My mother is a huge fan of Harrods, but she tries to visit in December when they have all the Christmas decorations on , from the lights on the facade to the Christmas trees and decorations inside.

Sky Garden offers epic views, tasty cocktails and a nice indoor garden. Not many people go there, especially on their first visit to London, because they tend to focus on the more “recognizable” buildings.

Yet from Sky Garden you have a 360-degrees view all around London, bars and restaurants where you can stop to have lunch or dinner.

Food and drinks here are more expensive, due to the location and to the beautiful view, but the entrance is free , which makes up for it! A good idea if you want to skip the queues is to book in advance.

Daffodils at Greenwich Park gardens on a sunny morning

Greenwich park

On our last trip to London we have visited this beautiful park and had breakfast under the hull of the Cutty Sark . It was Sunday and while the City was full of tourists, Greenwich park was blissfully quiet.

The locals told us that it’s never overcrowded, because people just go to the Observatory , in stead than laying down on the grass tp enjoy the day. This is also London’s sanctuary for foxes, bats and over 70 species of birds. Here you will find tennis courts, a boating lake and a beautiful view from the top of the hill.

If this isn’t enough to convince you to go there (it really is a good alternative to the most crowded areas on weekends), then try thinking of the National Maritime Museum , Queen’s House and Old Royal Naval College as backgrounds for your instagram shots: sure, it’s far away from the other instagrammable places in London, but the huge bonus is that it’s always pretty quiet!

Boats at the so called Little Venice in London

Little Venice

Little Venice looks a bit like Amsterdam , and for a moment you’ll be wondering if you’re really still in London. This picturesque spot, where the Grand Union Canal meets the Regent’s Canal, was supposedly given its name by the poet Robert Browning .

This little community of floating activities offers a waterbus, a floating art gallery and water cafés where you can take pictures and relax, away from the crowds. The famous Little Venice mansions provide a stunning backdrop for every instagrammer out there.

The brightly coloured narrowboats are an unusual sight in London, and in a way they reminded us of Giethoorn, the Dutch fairytale village where cars aren’t a thing.

Using the London tube, Little Venice isn’t too far away from Regent’s Park.

Shoreditch wall art in London

Shoreditch street art

Are you looking for a background like the Wynwood Walls in Miami ? Then head over to Shoreditch for some very cool street art. Every door, wall or building in this part of London is covered with colorful art, from murals to mosaics.

The most famous is one of the two Banksy on Rivington Street that depicts a security guard with a poodle alongside the words ‘ This wall is a designated graffiti area ’, but don’t stop there: each and everyone of the murals at Shoreditch is a work of art.

Wander the streets and just take pictures. The murals change pretty often and your favorite ones might not be there on your next visit.

Man shopping for flowers at Columbia road in London

Columbia road

Columbia Road is very famous for its Sunday flower market and quirky shops. While it can be crowded, I definitely suggest you to visit, also if you don’t plan on staying long.

Buckets of flowers and plants cover every part of the street and make this area so cute… and of course instagrammable!

At Columbia Road you will find many independent shops, cafés and galleries, that often only open during the weekend. It has that “ vintage feel ” we absolutely love, and while we’ve already visited it, we still have it on our London bucket list because we definitely want to go back for more!

People enjoying the sun at Primrose Hill Park in London

Primrose Hill

On our last trip to London I absolutely wanted to go to Regent’s Park to take a few pictures. But a few of the Londoners told me to skip it because it is absolutely crowded during the weekend, especially the more so because I was visiting in Spring, and it was going to be a sunny, beautiful Sunday. They suggested Primrose Hill in stead, and we decided to visit.

While walking there, we immediately noticed how quiet it was. Located on the North of Regent’s park, this beautiful hill offers great views of London and all around you will find cute victorian houses that are way less crowded than the ones in Notting Hill .

Many famous Londoners live here, from Daniel Craig to Tim Burton , to Jude Law , Ewan McGregor , Kate Moss and Chris Martin : keep your camera at hand!

View of the iconic Peggy Porschen bakery in London

Peggy Porschen

Peggy Porschen is by definitely one of the cool places in London you want to visit. I’m sure you’ve seen its cute store front several times on instagram.

The lovely pastel pink, with fresh flowers and small tables on the street usually attract quite a few travelers, making it one of the most popular places in London to photograph.

While you’re probably aware of the long line of instagrammers taking pictures in long skirts and beautiful hats, you might not know that even the Royal Family buys cakes at Peggy Porschen .

It’s not uncommon to find celebrities like Elton John , Kate Moss , Stella McCartney , Anthony Hopkins , Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow enjoying their fix of layer cakes, making it one of the best spots for London pics if you’re looking to score one with your favorite star.

Because taking Instagram pictures should also fit in your “ fun things to do in London ” list, I suggest you get to Peggy Porschen Belgravia early in the morning .

They don’t have many tables available, so you will be able to take nice pictures (without too many people around) and have a nice breakfast.

Did I mention that they serve their tea in super-cute, pastel colored teapots, and that their little cakes are both delicious and instagrammable? I mean… it’s like killing two birds with one stone!

The inside of the afternoon tea bus in London

Brigit’s Bakery Bus

Even if me and Al have been to London many times, we still feel a bit overwhelmed. There are so many things to see and do, that sometimes we spend our days walking around, taking pictures… and forgetting that the most important thing to do should be… having fun !

When we discovered that we could have a unique foodie experience on a refurbished British bus, we immediately booked a table. I’m sure you’ve heard about Brigit’s Bakery : they make delicious cakes and savory sandwiches in London and Bath.

Yet you might not know that they have planned the perfect experience for couples who want to see the top photo spots in London, for groups of girlfriends who want to have fun, or for hen parties.

The Afternoon Tea Bus is a vintage red bus turned into a bakery on wheels, which puts together cuteness, wanderlust and photography.

This amazing experience will take you to some of the best photo spots in London, while feeding you a delicious British high tea .

The inside of the bus is decorated with pink flowers and super-cute tables. During the tour you will be served a lot of tiny cakes , cupcakes , savory sandwiches , salmon blinis and muffins .

When you think you’re already stuffed, they’ll attack your nostrils with the heavenly scent of freshly baked scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam . I’m warning you, be prepared to eat a lot!

There’s a wide choice of drinks, from tea to prosecco, coffee, cappuccino and hot chocolate. At the end of the tour, you will be offered a to-go box for your leftovers, and a reusable Brigit’s Bakery coffee cup.

While on the bus, the staff will be more than willing to take pictures of you and your friends, while showing you the hidden gems in London that you didn’t know about.

The London bus tour lasts approximately 1 hour and half (depending on traffic): booking a table well in advance is absolutely mandatory!

Bonus : You can book in advance a themed tea party, or a vegan, vegetarian, Halal or gluten-free experience from the Brigit’s Bakery website!

A close up on a rose bush (pink and purple)

Queen Mary’s garden – Regent’s Park

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you already know I love the great outdoors, but I love gardens and flowers even more (we’ve also been chasing the cherry blossoms in Japan and the foliage in the Adirondacks ).

Not surprisingly, I added Queen Mary’s Garden to our itinerary on a recent trip to the U.K. Not only it’s one of the most eerie, beautiful places in London, but it’s also perfect for fashion shoots or Instagram pictures.

Queen Mary’s garden is named after the wife of King George V and was opened to the general public in 1932.

It is amazing because you’ll find London’s largest collection of roses: approximately 12,000 rose bushes have been planted within the garden, with 85 different variety beds on display.

Yet roses are not the only treasure you’ll find at one of the best hidden gems in London. There are over 9,000 begonias , Mediterranean Borders , colorful shrubs often visited by beautiful butterflies , statues and more.

If you’re looking for the best photo opportunities in London, visit the Queen Mary’s garden in the first two weeks of June, when the flowers are in bloom: entrance is free !

View of the entrance to Biscuiteers in Notting Hill, London

Biscuiteers

Have you walked all the way to Portobello Road and you’ve found it super crowded?

Sometimes taking pictures at Notting Hill can be a bit unnerving. The fact is that being one of the top photo spots in London, there are always instagrammers crowding the cutest gardens and doors ( please, don’t bother the locals and don’t trespass just to take a picture !).

Biscuiteers is yet a super cute cafè which is a few minutes away from Portobello Road (you can just walk there).

Famous for its hand-iced biscuits, sometimes so beautiful that you don’t even feel like eating them, it also has an instagrammable store front that is one of the must see sights in London.

Located on Kensington Park Road , it’s been named as one of “ London’s quirkiest cafes ” by the Telegraph and as one of the “ Most instagrammable places in London ” by Vogue .

Such a brilliant list, a combination of touristy and off the beaten path locations, thanks for sharing guys! I’ll definitely visit some of those!

Thanks Frances! We’re happy you like what we do here, and we hope you have a great trip to London!

I like the fact that you’ve mentioned some spots I love (e.g. Primrose Hill, Notting Hill, Shoreditch, Little Venice). Not a big fan of the very touristy spots.

Me neither! I prefer the quiet spots 🙂

I LOVE Instagram guides. In fact, they are one of, if not the first thing I search for when I start to research a new destination. This one is helpful not only for where to go in London and what to take pics, but an explanation of why it’s instagrammable. I like knowing the why because it helps you get a better understanding of setting up/framing the photo. I love the different color houses of Notting Hill and when I first saw the photo of Little Venice, my first thought was “looks like Amsterdam”! LOL!

Right? We were baffled! And not many people know that London has a “Little Venice”, as it’s quite “hidden”, in a way! I’m very glad you liked the post!

Awesome list, it’s always great to know where the best photo spots are. Your pictures are wonderful!

I’m glad you found it useful!

Wow… that’s a huge list! And you have also given photographs to really prove your point. The Royal Albert Hall will be my pick. What a magnificent structure with a rich history!

If you can, I strongly suggest also watching a concert at the Royal Albert Hall, it’s priceless!

Indeed such colorful frames. What a good photo opportunity there! I would definitely putting a walking tour there as my first must do activity.

I’m sure a walking tour would be so much fun. 🙂

what a great post. As a person who lives in London, I would like to add one more spot. and that spot is Richmond Park where you are in the city but looks like you are in nature with wild deer.

Oooh I haven’t been there! Thank you SO much, I’m noting it down: you had me at wild deer! Must be amazing!

This is a perfectly comprehensive guide to London photo spots indeed! Your photos are lovely and this guide is a perfect intro to anyone traveling there for the first time )

Thank you I’m glad you like it!

Photography 101: Framing

If you put a box around something, people will want to look inside; It is one of the fundamental rules of photography, although, rules are meant to be broken. You do not need to consciously think about the law of gravity each time you go for a walk, although knowing it exists explains why your feet stay on the ground.

An Autumn Stroll through Hampstead Heath

With London in lockdown again, everything is closed, but exercise is still encouraged. So I've been taken to wandering through the Hampstead Heath, and with the autumn colours blanketing the floor of the wooded areas, it has made for a beautiful refuge from the pandemic. The autumn foliage has added a splash of colour to my life that would otherwise be filled only by the four white walls of my room.

Be A Tourist In Your Own City

It is amazing how we reserve our photography for voyages. Paris deserves a beautiful photo of the Eiffel Tower, in London one must capture the Tower Bridge looking its best, and Hong Kong's skyline is one on the list. But how often do you shoot your own city?

Shooting from the Window

The world has changed quite a lot over the past month with the vast number of the world's population in lockdown. For some, creativity has been hard to find without the usual opportunities presented to photographers. Landscape photographers have lost their view; portrait photographers have lost their models, and it can feel like we have lost our canvas. For others, it has been a chance to reimagine our photography.

100th blog: A Look Back at the Best

Over the past 99 blogs posts, we've covered in-depth technical discussions, featured exciting hidden locations, and gotten to look at the work of our photographers in depth. So for our 100th blog, I wanted to take a look back at some of the most popular articles we've written and shared them with you to celebrate this milestone.

The Beirut Sun Tanners - C'est Beyrouth

In Paris? Head to L'Institut des Cultures d'Islam to absorb the culture in a fantastic photography exhibition entitled "C'est Beyrouth", it will help you understand the complexity of what makes Beirut today, overlooking a decade that knows neither war nor peace. I got the chance to explore the exhibition and a peculiar series called “The Beirut Sun Tanners” shot by our very own Vianney Le Caer.

A walk along Regent's Canal

The Regent Canal towpath has all sorts of walking, running, cycling and sitting to be had along it. Families out for a walk, tourists who have wandered off from the Camden Markets, friends having a picnic, houseboat owners coming home with shopping from the market. The Regents Canal is a wonderful green space in the heart of London.

How to photograph Japanese Cherry Blossoms

Even though the Sakura, Japanese Cherry Blossom, is in flower for a little over a week each year, it is a highly anticipated event. Walking along a river path, or catching the view from the metro window, they explode with colour, vibrant shades of pink drip from every tree, and you appreciate their brief but symbolic power.

Synaesthetic Exotism by Vianney Le Caer

Best place to photograph Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge is arguably the most iconic sight of London.  But where is the best place to shoot the bridge? We’ll divulge our favourite spots to get the best shots.

London Cityscapes

When one thinks of cityscapes, London immediately draws to mind. The skyline is so instantly recognisable thanks to the many landmarks we all know so well, both old and new. With icons that have stood seemingly before memory can recall, contrasted with the modern world. Explore London's cityscape.

A Tale of Two Londons

London and the City of London are two entirely separate places, connected with a strange and unique history. Commonly referred to as the Square Mile , or simply The City , it is geographically located inside of, but not a part of, Greater London and enjoyed a history that pre-dates the English unification by a couple of hundred years.

Dragons in London

You might be forgiven for thinking that I’ve watched a little too much Game of Thrones, recanting stories of Dragons in London as if I were Saint George and his sword. But I kid you not, I have seen countless dragons this past week, right in the very heart of London. Silver dragons with bright red tongues and a grimacing look in their eyes. I would be frightened... If they weren't made out of cast iron.

However, Rose's passion for photography lay in capturing people, nature, and surroundings rather than fashion.

Rose works with ordinary people in her studio and loves to shoot around London on sunny or gloomy days. She enjoys sharing her knowledge with other photographers and believes in learning and growing together. London's mix of architecture and shapes is perfect for photography, and Rose loves to shoot early in the morning or at sunset to capture the city's skyline and reflections on the river Thames.

The photographers have been top notch every time — they were fun to work with, made us all feel comfortable, and the resulting photos are phenomenal.”

How to Navigate London’s Wondrous (and Very Big) V&A Museum

Paintings, ceramics, photography, fashion, furniture and more: The Victoria and Albert Museum is a treasure trove of art and design. Here’s one besotted visitor’s plan for taking it all in.

In a museum gallery full of replicas of centuries-old sculptures, visitors are tiny in comparison to a huge sculpture of a nude male figure: Michelangelo's David.

By Andrew Ferren

Andrew Ferren, a frequent contributor to the Travel section, has visited the V&A dozens of times and looks forward to exploring the new satellite buildings when they open in East London in 2025.

Even for someone who loves getting lost in museums — especially “everything museums” like the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York — London’s Victoria and Albert Museum might have been my Waterloo. The statistics are daunting: 5,000 years of artistic production with more than 60,000 works on view (from a collection of some 2.8 million) in about 150 galleries beneath 21 acres of roof.

The V&A typically draws around 3 million annual visitors, but even on the busiest days, the museum has the space and setup to largely avoid the sense of competing with the crowds. Since visiting the permanent collection is free (some exhibitions cost up to 20 pounds, or about $25), once you’re in the door you can just start wandering. Step right for medieval mosaics and Renaissance tapestries or go deep for 1940s Paris fashion, Baroque sculpture and, beyond that, Buddhist art.

It’s easy to spend an entire day in the V&A. Here’s a plan for making the most of your visit. But first a bit of background.

An eclectic treasure trove

If the British Museum is known as Britain’s attic — an abundance of artistic and cultural relics from the realm and around the globe — then the V&A is the country’s classroom. It, too, is a trove of exemplary works, from exquisite Raphael drawings to groovy 1970s plastic radios; Coptic tunics to Alexander McQueen couture gowns; vividly hued Islamic tiles to a bunch of grand English beds. These objects were displayed not just to delight connoisseurs, but to provide great art and ideas to educate British designers, manufacturers and workers in good taste and technical prowess.

The museum was the pet project of Prince Albert, consort to Queen Victoria, who had seen firsthand that British manufactured goods were not always top of the class. By displaying applied arts (textiles, ceramics, glass and other manufactured objects) alongside fine arts (architecture, painting and sculpture), the new museum would democratize aesthetic appreciation and inspire better designs for better products.

Originally known as the South Kensington Museum, the V&A opened in 1857 in temporary structures while new buildings were constructed. Incorporated into the new museum were libraries and schools for science and art, including one for women. The leading artists of the time, such as Frederic Leighton and William Morris, contributed to its décor. Such was its embrace of modernity, that the world’s first museum exhibition of photography (the medium was “invented’ only in the 1820s) was held here in 1858.

Though Prince Albert died in 1861, the museum continued to expand. In 1899, Queen Victoria laid the cornerstone of a grand new entrance wing along Cromwell Road and renamed the complex the Victoria and Albert Museum.

If that sounds fusty, it’s not. More than 165 years after its opening, the V&A’s pioneering spirit hasn’t faded. Its fashion blockbusters, like “Naomi: In Fashion,” celebrating the model Naomi Campbell (opening June 22), are must-see shows. And its outreach programs, studio classes and parties engage the public as few museums do. Recently, the V&A’s reach has been growing, with offshoots such as the Scottish V&A Dundee , a kid-centric Young V&A and two new museum buildings — one featuring nearly 250,000 works — opening in East London in 2025.

Many contemporary artists and designers claim the V&A as among their favorite museums, and one to which they return again and again. Though neither artist nor designer, I, too, claim the V&A as a favorite museum and have visited dozens of times, often for less than an hour just to wow my young kids with the monumental plaster casts of European monuments or even just to get out of the rain.

But I knew there were still sections I’d never visited. So, after an absence of three years, I spent a day there and came up with a game plan for others to navigate those vast halls.

Get there at 10 a.m., when the doors open, so you can breeze through the ground-floor galleries while they are still virtually empty and then head to more remote parts.

Since fabrics are fragile and fade, the fashion exhibits are changed regularly and there’s always something fresh and engaging to see. From there, wind past the entrance through the arts of Asia, from the elegantly simple furniture of Ming China to the intricately carved lacquerware of Japan, to the eye-poppingly vivid blue tile reliefs and stunning silk carpets such as the 16th-century Ardibil carpet from Persia.

Then into the Cast Courts, three huge galleries packed with full-size reproductions — plaster and metal casts — of sculptures and building fragments from around Europe. Exact copies of medieval tombs line the floor while masterpieces like Michelangelo’s David, Trajan’s Column and Renaissance church facades rise toward the ceiling. One can easily get stuck here, awed by the scale and charmed by the concept of corralling massive replicas from across the centuries into a playground for architecture buffs.

From there it’s an easy slide into the adjacent medieval and Renaissance galleries, which cover Europe from 300 to 1600, and where the colorful fourth- and fifth-century tapestry fragments on view or the radiant gold-backed mosaics from Ravenna, Italy, reveal that the Dark Ages were not entirely devoid of light and color.

The later galleries reveal just how connected and sophisticated many parts of Europe were in the Renaissance. Exquisite regional products — metalwork and armor from Germany, shimmering lusterware ceramics from Spain, tapestries from Brussels — became sought after on an international marketplace.

Carving your own path

In such a sprawling museum, there is no single logical or even chronological path to follow. For many, that’s part of the V&A’s appeal: the quirky juxtapositions one encounters roaming its six floors (the ground floor is numbered zero, so the “fourth floor” is actually the fifth level; the V&A also has a -1 basement level).

So on my visit, once the galleries started filling up at midday, I took the elevator to the remote fourth-floor ceramics galleries and then made my way to the lower floors.

On the fourth floor, it feels as if virtually everything ever made of clay or porcelain — Ming, majolica, Meissen, you name it — is displayed in floor-to-ceiling cases, including stacks of Chinese bowls salvaged from a ship that sank in 1400 off the Malay Peninsula.

Just when you think one can’t stretch the clay any further, you get to a display about Josiah Wedgwood and his innovative Jasperware that became the rage around the world in the 18th century. (The V&A also has an outpost in Stoke-on-Trent dedicated entirely to Wedgwood). The remaining fourth-floor galleries showcase furniture from the last 600 years.

The third floor offers a similar range of media and epochs — from international glass in all its facets to architectural models. One might expect Venetian Murano glass to reign supreme, but the quirky and colorful 18th-century German enameled glass, as well as green-hued glasses and goblets adorned with blobs of glass steal the show.

On the second floor, a network of long galleries offers deep dives into religious stained glass, small-scale bronze sculptures, English paintings and drawings, as well as tapestries. Nearby, gorgeous murals by Frederic Leighton push the V&A propaganda in themes like “The Arts Applied to War” and “The Arts Applied to Peace.”

Also on the second floor, the Photography Center recently expanded its galleries to become Britain’s largest photography exhibition center. Part of a display called “Design: 1900-Now,” features a recent acquisition: a store-bought snorkeling mask that had been adapted by an Italian designer into a functioning oxygen mask during the darkest days of the Covid crisis in 2020.

In a country famous for its crown jewels, the V&A’s spot-lit jewelry gallery packs in everything from fifth-century Byzantine bracelets to jaunty 1970s body jewelry. Standouts include the Townshend jewels — a virtual encyclopedia of gemstones, from colored diamonds to opals, each set in individual rings and displayed in swirls of brilliant color.

And finally, stretching almost across the entire second floor is a display of every imaginable type of ironwork. Seeing these works, such as the monumental 19th-century Gothic Revival choir screen from Salisbury Cathedral, calls to mind the Goethe quote that “architecture is frozen music.”

Take a break then keep going

Even if you’re not hungry, head to the ground level to the Refreshment Rooms, the world’s first museum cafe, which opened in 1868. Designed by the leading talents of the day — James Gamble, William Morris, Philip Webb, Edward Burne-Jones and Edward J. Poynter — the original decoration remains largely intact, a snapshot of Victorian modernity. Back in the day, each room had a different menu and proposed clientele, but today, for about £10, visitors can choose from a buffet of hot English fare, quiches, sandwiches, beer, wine or soft drinks, and take their meal into whichever room they find most pleasing.

Back in the galleries, I had saved what I considered the best for last: some two dozen British galleries (spread between levels 1 and 3) that tell the country’s history from the Tudors to the Victorians through paintings, furniture, clothing, musical instruments, textiles and truly fabulous beds, including the Great Bed of Ware, a massive four-poster built in 1590 for an inn. It measures nearly 11 feet on each side, supposedly able to accommodate four couples. Centuries-old graffiti covers practically every plank, and its fame merited a mention in Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night”: “… as many lies as will lie in thy sheet of paper, although the sheet were big enough for the bed of Ware.”

And then finally, the most extraordinary works in the museum, shown in a cathedral-like space: the famous Rafael cartoons for the tapestries that were created to adorn the Sistine Chapel in 1515-16. Commissioned by Pope Leo X, Raphael painted the designs on paper, which would have been used as the guide for the weavers to follow. Now owned by King Charles III and considered among the greatest works of Renaissance art, they were created as part of a manufacturing process, so it seems wholly appropriate they are on loan to the V&A, where fine art and manufacturing go hand in hand.

Sometimes you want more than a phone camera to document your epic trip. These are some of the best ... [+] travel cameras.

There are great models for amateurs and professionals alike, ensuring anyone can take their travel photography to the next level. After testing and extensive research, we’ve narrowed down hundreds of options to recommend quality models for every shooter in a variety of price ranges and with a variety of features.

  • Best Travel Camera Overall: OM System OM-5 Camera (Body Only)
  • Best Budget Travel Camera: Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV Camera
  • Best Compact Travel Camera: Fujifilm X100VI Camera
  • Best Point-And-Shoot Travel Camera: Sony Cyber-Shot RX100 VII Camera
  • Best Travel Camera For Vlogging: Sony ZV-1 Digital Camera For Content Creators
  • Best Travel Action Camera: GoPro Hero12 Black Action Camera

Best Travel Camera Overall

Instantly level up your travel photography, om system om-5 camera (body only).

Dimensions: 4.9 x 2 x 3.4 inches (body only) | Sensor size: Four thirds | Image resolution: 20 megapixels | Video resolution: 4K at 30fps, 1080p at 120fps | Display: 3 inches | Memory card slots: 1x SDXC UHS-II | Built-in flash: No

Best for: Getting the best travel photography in a compact package.

Those looking for a high-end travel camera in a compact body with versatile functionality should buy the OM System OM-5. The camera is a particularly good choice for photographers who want the flexibility of interchangeable lenses—of course, adding one or multiple lenses makes it slightly less portable than some of the other options on this list. The camera boasts a huge range of features, including things like in-body stabilization and interesting computational photography modes. In particular, this camera boasts great in-body stabilization, ensuring crisp and detailed images even for longer exposures.

The camera is a little more expensive than some might want, especially amateurs who only want something to use on vacation. Additionally, the camera has a slightly older processor, and it charges through a Micro-USB charging port instead of the USB-C charging port we would expect in 2024. Those, however, are relatively minor issues considering the stunning image quality for the price.

What the reviews say: Reviewers on Amazon are particularly impressed with the image stabilization. “Excellent camera for vacations and general photography. Sharpness and image quality is very good. Image stabilization is outstanding. I can hand-hold 1/2 second exposures and get a sharp image.”

  • Interchangeable lenses
  • Excellent image stabilization
  • Cool retro design
  • Less compact with interchangeable lenses
  • Micro-USB charging port
  • Slightly aging processor

Best Budget Travel Camera

Up-to-date image quality with a retro body, olympus om-d e-m10 mark iv camera.

Dimensions: 4.8 x 3.3 x 2.6 inches | Sensor size: Four thirds | Image resolution: 20 megapixels | Video resolution: 4K at 30fps, 720p at 120fps | Display: 3 inches | Memory card slots: 1x SDXC UHS-II | Built-in flash: No

Best for: Top-tier travel photography at a reasonable price.

It’s worth paying a little for a decent camera if you want something better than your phone, but you don’t necessarily have to pay more than $1,000 or so. The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV is a perfect example of this. It’s not necessarily cheap , but it is more affordable than many of the other options on this list, while still offering an excellent image quality and solid video quality. The camera has five-axis stabilization for more crisp photos, and it has a three-inch display that can flip down for easier viewing depending on your positioning. It’s very compact, too, and it supports hundreds of relatively affordable, compact lenses.

There are some trade-offs when you buy a more affordable camera. This camera also has a Micro-USB port, and there’s no microphone input to be able to sync audio from an external microphone. Some may consider the 4K 30fps video to be a little low, however it’s to be expected for a camera in this price range. However, the camera still gets the basics right—like a solid image quality with good stabilization. As an added bonus, it has an awesome retro design, too.

What the reviews say: Reviewers on Amazon found the camera to be high-quality, while being highly portable. “I bought this for a month-long trip through Europe and it served me well. The pictures are high quality and clear, while the camera is lightweight and durable.”

  • Hundreds of affordable lens options
  • Reasonable price
  • Great image and video quality
  • Micro-USB port
  • No microphone input

Best Compact Travel Camera

Keep your camera in your pocket, fujifilm x100vi camera.

Dimensions: 5 x 3 x 2.2 inches | Sensor size: APS-C | Image resolution: 40 megapixels | Video resolution: 6.2K at 30fps, 4K at 30fps, 4K at 60fps | Display: 3 inches | Memory card slots: SDXC | Built-in flash: Yes

Best for: Excellent image quality in an ultracompact camera that can fit in your pocket.

Those who want something ultracompact should buy the Fujifilm X100VI. You may note that the dimensions of this camera are similar or even slightly larger than some of the other cameras on this list, but this camera does not have interchangeable lenses, and instead has a relatively slim lens fixed to the body. Thankfully, the camera still boasts an excellent image quality with good depth, and it can capture high-resolution video, at up to a 6.2K resolution. It has good in-body stabilization too, which helps produce crisp images.

Unfortunately, the camera is more expensive than many of the alternatives, but since you have to buy separate lenses for other options, that gap closes a little. Additionally, the focus on the camera isn’t super fast, but thankfully it’s not overly slow either.

What the reviews say: Reviews by customers on B&H note that the camera is a worthy upgrade from other Fujifilm models. “The camera is awesome. I was afraid it wasn’t worth upgrading. But it is such an improvement from the X100F.”

  • Compact build
  • High-resolution video
  • Good image stabilization
  • Lens focus isn’t super fast

Best Point-And-Shoot Travel Camera

Easy to use at a moment's notice, sony cyber-shot rx100 vii camera.

Dimensions: 4 x 2.3 x 1.7 inches | Sensor size: 1 inch | Image resolution: 20.1 megapixels | Video resolution: 4K at 30fps, 1080p at 100fps | Display: 3 inches | Memory card slots: SDXC | Built-in flash: Yes

Best for: Quick photography when you need it.

Those looking for a super compact point-and-shoot camera to take on their travels should buy the Sony RX100 VII. This camera is small but mighty, offering a host of high-end features and the ability to take excellent photos despite its small size. Notably, it has some of the best autofocus tech in the game, meaning that you can take photos faster than ever. While it has a built-in lens, it’s relatively versatile and can zoom to up to 8x. The camera offers digital-stabilization tech that’s generally good for shooting casual video.

Be a little careful when using the camera, as it isn’t the most rugged, and there’s no waterproofing. Additionally, the camera is a little more expensive than other options, even those that offer more features and versatility. However, if you’re looking for ultracompact and don’t mind spending a little to get it, then the Sony RX100 VII is the way to go.

What the reviews say: Reviewers on B&H note that the camera is a powerhouse for its size. “This little camera is truly remarkable. I’m a professional photojournalist and own a number of mirrorless alpha bodies; I bought this camera for hiking and skiing because it fits easily into almost any pocket.”

  • Highly versatile lens
  • Very portable size
  • Sleek design
  • Not the most rugged
  • A bit expensive

Best Travel Camera For Vlogging

A content-creation powerhouse in a tiny body, sony zv-1 digital camera for content creators.

Dimensions: 4.2 x 2.4 x 1.7 inches | Sensor size: 1 inch | Image resolution: 20 megapixels | Video resolution: 4K at 30fps, 1080p at 120fps | Display: 3 inches | Memory card slots: SDXC | Built-in flash: No

Best for: Vloggers who want solid video and audio on the go.

Vloggers or videographers who want something high-end to take on the go should buy the Sony ZV-1. This camera offers a range of features to make vlogging even easier, plus it has a compact build that makes it easy to pack it in a bag or pocket. Perhaps the best feature is the side-flipping camera that allows you to see your shot when you’re filming yourself. Video quality is excellent, and the camera is able to capture bright, vibrant video all the time. Additionally, the camera has a hot shoe and 3.5mm microphone port, so you can easily set up external microphones for better audio.

The camera is able to capture 4K video at up to 30 frames per second, which may be too low for videographers who rely on slow-motion shots but still want 4K footage. Thankfully, it does support up to 120 fps when shooting at a 1080p resolution. Additionally, while colors are bright and vibrant, the video stabilization isn’t as great as some more expensive options. But it’s still not terrible, especially given the price of the camera.

What the reviews say: A reviewer on Amazon noted that the camera is perfect for their content creation needs. “As a content creator and vlogger, this camera has become an indispensable tool for capturing high-quality videos and photos. The image and video quality is outstanding, with crisp details and vibrant colors that make my content pop.”

  • Relatively inexpensive
  • Excellent video quality
  • Side-flipping screen for self-video
  • 4K maxes out at 30fps
  • Video stabilization is only fine

Dimensions: 2.8 x 2.0 x 1.3 inches | Sensor size: 1/1.9 inch | Image resolution: 27 megapixels | Video resolution: 5.3K at 60fps, 4K at 120fps, 2.7K at 240fps | Display: 2.27-inch rear, 1.4-inch front | Memory card slots: MicroSD UHS-III | Built-in flash: No

Best for: Capturing the action other cameras wouldn’t survive in.

GoPro has long offered the best action cam experience, and the GoPro Hero12 Black is the best one yet. This camera offers a massive range of features for those who want to capture the action, including the ability to capture footage at a hefty 5.3K at 60 frames per second or 4K at 120 fps. Downgrade to a still-solid 2.7K and you can capture footage at 240 fps—perfect for those ultra slow-mo shots. The camera has a display on both the front and the back, making it a great choice for those who want to capture themselves.

It’s a little hard to compare this camera with others on this list and talk about image quality. It’s true to say that the Hero12 Black has the worst image quality of any camera on this list. But it’s also a totally different type of camera—built for high-frame-rate video. And, to be fair, it offers among the best image qualities of any action camera out there. It also has a compact body and the ability to survive almost anything. It takes a little time getting used to the menu system, and it costs more than many of the other action cams out there, but it’s worth the price and the time you spend learning how to use it.

What the reviews say: One reviewer on Amazon was particularly impressed with the number of accessories available to the camera. “Video and picture quality is awesome and, with so many accessories available, the options for use and function seem limitless.”

  • Very portable
  • Tons of video options
  • Works with a large range of accessories
  • Slightly tricky to navigate
  • A bit pricey for an action cam

3 Film and TV-themed Day Trips From London That Take Fans Into the Worlds of 'Bridgerton,' 'Peaky Blinders,' and More

Used as blockbuster backdrops for "Saltburn," "Wonka," and "Peaky Blinders," these cinematic filming locations are less than two hours from the British capital.

COURTESY OF NETFLIX

Blessed with photogenic good looks and no shortage of main character energy, Britain has become a first-choice filming location for everything from cortisol-spiking spy thrillers to plush period pieces. According to data from Social Films, 220 feature films were made in Britain in 2022, and films shot here have won more Oscars than any other country other than the U.S.. It’s easy for travelers to get in on the action, as many of the most popular filming locations are within easy reach of London, making for picture-perfect day trips from the British capital.

Oxfordshire

Famed for its quintessential English countryside charm and ancient collegiate city, the county of Oxfordshire sits less than 60 miles northwest of London, making it a no-brainer for film fans. The county’s only city, Oxford, is about an hour from London’s Paddington Station by train and feels like the set of a moody, dark academia film with aristocratic architecture lifted from antiquity, shadowy lanes, and bookish students flitting off to tutorials. With such moody allure, it’s no surprise that the charming city has plenty of on-screen credits, including "Saltburn," which was filmed in Radcliffe Square — with its pebble-paved streets and iconic domed library — as well as in front of the Divinity School , the oldest building in the university built for teaching, dating back to the 1420s. (The building was also used in the "Harry Potter" films as the infirmary and ballroom.) Open for visitors, Brasenose College , one of the 36 colleges that make up Oxford University, was used in "Saltburn" as well, as the main characters’ college. It’s been reported that filming even took place in actual dorm rooms, “lent” to production by real-life pupils.

The recent "Wonka" movie was also filmed in Oxford, using backdrops like Hertford Bridge , better known as the Bridge of Sighs because it resembles the famed bridge in Venice. During filming, Timothée Chalamet, who plays the top-hatted young chocolatier, was reputedly staying at the stylish new country hotel, Estelle Manor , located about a half-hour’s drive away in the rolling Oxfordshire hills.

Another wildly popular filming location, the magnificent Blenheim Palace , birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, is also about a half hour away from Oxford. Over 300 years old with a wooded estate stretching over 12,000 acres, this UNESCO World Heritage Site has hosted film crews from "Harry Potter" — check out the ancient, gnarled Cedar of Lebanon tree, to the left of the Grand Bridge, used in Professor Snape's childhood flashbacks — as well as "Spectre" in the "James Bond" series; "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation;" "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny;" and most recently, "Napoleon." (Director Sir Ridley Scott was on location for the epic film for nearly a month.) The locations and filming backstories for all the big hits at Blenheim are handily marked on the self-guided Lights, Camera, Action! Trail , which can be followed via a QR-code map.

Located about two hours by train from London’s Euston station, the United Kingdom’s second biggest city and the country’s one-time industrial and manufacturing hub, Birmingham has become synonymous with the Peaky Blinders television show, soon to be a major motion picture in 2025.

Robert Viglasky/Courtesy of Netflix

According to the West Midlands Growth Company, Birmingham’s visitor numbers have grown by over a quarter since Peaky Blinders first aired in 2013. For fans of the show, which was inspired by a real 1920s street gang in Birmingham, the open-air Black Country Museum in Dudley — a “living” museum using unscripted live actors — is a must. Spanning over 26 acres and including over 100,000 original objects sourced from the community, historic buildings, and restored automobiles, the museum tells the story of the so-called Black Country (the sooty site of Birmingham’s iron foundries that rose to significance during the Industrial Revolution) from 1700 through 1968.

For historical accuracy, all six seasons of Peaky Blinders were partially filmed on-site, using museum locations like the canal-flanked scrap metal yard, the Blacksmith’s building, Canal Street bridge, and St. James’s church school. “It helped us get on the map,” Claire Packer, the museum’s Head of Audiences & Communications, told Travel + Leisure . “We started reaching people we otherwise may not have reached.”

Die-hard fans might also like to check out the hip-and-gritty neighborhood of Digbeth in Birmingham, which runs along the Fazeley Canal. A one-time hub for warehouses and factories now covered with vibrant street art, the area — in particular Fazeley Street — is the soon-to-be-home of the new Peaky Blinders film studio, fashioned by Peaky Blinders creator (and Birmingham local) Steven Knight, who wants to bring the area back to life.

The elegant, refined Georgian city of Bath, an hour train ride from Paddington, is essentially one big romantic backdrop for the Regency-era-drama Bridgerton . With season three having just premiered, key on-screen sites include The Holburne Museum , a fine art gallery used as Lady Danbury’s mansion, and No. 1 Royal Crescent , used as the exterior for the Featherington family home. The real-life property is a townhouse museum and is missing the lion statues and other decorative flourishes, but it’s still undeniably photogenic. Used as a stomping ground for many characters in street scenes as well as a proxy for London’s Covent Garden, Bath’s picture-perfect city square Abbey Green — with a 200-year-old London plane tree at its center and Abbey Deli (The Modiste Shop onscreen) — is another recognizable spot.

joe daniel price/Getty Images

While most of the filming was done at a soundstage in Ascot, Bath is still rich with history, where fiction and nonfiction meet. For example, A.H. Hale pharmacy on Argyle Street is where Queen Charlotte — the only real character in the Bridgerton series — would have her prescriptions filled, and you can still see her royal crest of arms on top of the shop.

‘Kink tourism’ is on the rise – but does it live up to the hype?

Curious to see how the hospitality industry is embracing eroticism, jordan gray and her wife checked into london’s the mandrake hotel with its new high-end ‘kink concierge’ service – and found a world of mischief, sensuality and exploration, article bookmarked.

There’s more to The Mandrake than meets the eye...

T here is something new and mysterious going down at this five-star Fitzrovian Hotel.

As if its shadowy provocative exterior, nestled halfway down Newman Street, doesn’t evoke a sense of darkly playful mischief, I will tell you, as a newly minted Tribe Member, that there’s more going on within the walls of The Mandrake than meets the (literal) eye.

“Kink tourism” is on the rise. There is a heightened discourse around the benefits of sexual exploration. Couples (and singles alike) are taking ever-more extravagant ownership over their erotic adventures – and the hospitality industry has responded. Hôtel Amour ( Paris ) comes replete with a feast of phallic paraphernalia. Hedonism II ( Jamaica ) is a couples-only resort that offers either a ‘rude’ or ‘prude’ package, depending on your penchant for nudity. The Erotic Suite at The Palms Casino Resort ( Las Vegas ) boasts mirrored ceilings, an 8ft rotating bed and a dancing pole in the shower. It’s all good fun… but where’s the nuance?

Photo London has mass appeal—can it be equally thought-provoking?

The uk's premier photography fair is still finding its identity, with strong curated sections and projects presented amid more vacuous work.

“It is my mission to make more contemporary art collectors into lens-based collectors and to broaden the scope seen at the fair,” said Kamiar Maleki, the director of Photo London, in the catalogue for its 2024 edition, which opened to VIPs yesterday (until 19 May). Maleki, who has now led Photo London for two editions, continues, “our aspiration is to be a fair that is as thought-provoking …as it is engaging to all”.

The consensus yesterday seemed to be that the fair is delivering on the latter, and it was business as usual with its mix of the good, the bad and the beautiful. The public’s easy engagement with photography is one of the medium’s obvious strengths. It doesn’t throw up barriers like so much contemporary art. Yet its accessibility can appear a detriment in the context of an art fair, banging the lightweight pop of rock, fashion and movie celebrity—never intended for the gallery walls—against more highbrow conceptualism, or the commitment and rigour of documentary concerns.

And Photo London is no different. The usual suspects are all on show. Pictures of Mick Jagger can be found on several booths, although the so-called ‘Moss Index’ (measuring the presence of images of the supermodel Kate Moss) is low this year. There are tigers and elephants and murmurations. There are the vacuous clichés of glamour posing as art. But there is also plenty of work of real depth and quality and originality.

In the smallest booth at the fair, for example, Trolley Books and Hoppen Gallery present Siân Davey’s much anticipated series The Garden (2021-23), a collaboration between the artist and her son to cultivate a barren space with wildflowers. The garden became a sanctuary and a confessional to the community they invited in; a response to the dislocation of lockdown and, as Davey puts it, “a metaphor for the human heart itself”. The booth, an intimate antichamber within a ground floor wing in Somerset House—the fair’s home for the nine years of its existence—is dressed with fresh flowers and an empty chair that, as in the photographer’s garden, all are welcome to enjoy.

In another eye-catching partnership, Lee Shulman of The Anonymous Project (which works with a large collection of vintage amateur colour slides) has collaborated with Omar Victor Diop, the Senegalese self-portraitist, who has inserted himself into Kodachrome images of domestic life from segregation-era America in the 1950s and 60s. The respective galleries of the pair—Binome and Magnin-A, both based in Paris—have also partnered, presenting the work in a joint booth within the central marquee sited in the Somerset House courtyard.

It seems that Photo London can indeed be thought-provoking. Charlotte Jansen seems to think so. The write and editor, who is the author of Girl on Girl: Art and Photography in the Age of the Female Gaze (2017), is the new curator for the Discovery section for emerging photographers and galleries. "Maybe 95 percent of both gallerists and exhibitors are women, which is unprecedented in the commercial sector," she says. "And we’ve got a real representation of ‘others’— people we don’t normally see in images, and people we don’t normally see represented at art fairs. And that’s sort of what the challenge is, to subtly ask what taste is, what’s considered beautiful, and what’s collectible or sellable."

As in previous years, the Discovery section—if you can find it within Somerset House’s lower ground warrens—is more reflective of the wider contemporary photography scene. In particular, the unrepresented artists who were given space to show their work.

Maleki tells The Art Newspaper that he wants Photo London to be “more than just a trade show”. Art fairs are about discovery, he asserts, though he acknowledges that many of the best-known photography galleries aren’t there, such as Hamiltons, one of the UK’s longest running spaces dedicated to the medium, or any number of galleries from New York and the continent.

“There are different statuses of galleries, obviously, and, of course, fairs are only as good as the galleries you work with,” he says. “But it's also about the programmes that these galleries bring. And, as you see, we have Bendana Pinel for the first time, we've got Thomas Zander back, Berno Taschen is here... So, in terms of the top photography galleries, we do have some of them here. But it's also interesting to showcase different artists, and, for example, we’re now working with collectors to support individual artists at the booths.”

Somerset House is an idiosyncratic space for an art fair and its tight corridors and rooms felt especially packed when one of many tours were doing the rounds. Noticeably, tours during the preview were made up mostly of women, many of whom were a younger crowd. Some tours were those led by institutions including Tate, Serpentine, Institute Français, clubs and patron circles such as Parcours Saint Germain, The Cultivist and Spirit Now, and friends and partners, such as Prix Pictet and the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation.

Indeed, there was a palpable buzz about the place that may not have yet translated into the kind of sales enjoyed in the peak, pre-pandemic years of 2017 and 18, but plenty of business was being done. Peter Fetterman Gallery sold a number of works by Sarah Moon, priced between £20,000 and £30,000, alongside sales of Jeffrey Conley and Michael Kenna, representing “works from three generations of artists who have all very much brought pieces that have a physical presence and have been printed by hand,” says the gallery's director, Kate Stevens.

Dirimart, one of a record number of Turkish galleries attending, thanks for the support of TurkishBank UK, had sold nearly all the works in its booth—a solo presentation of Cihan Öncü (available in editions of three at £3,000). “People are educated, they know what they are looking at,” says Levent Özmen, director of Dirimart, “not just in terms of the content or the formal qualities, but also the technique and the history. It enables a serious dialogue.”

At the booth of Echo Fine Arts from Cannes, gallery founder Ève d’Oréfice said she had come to Photo London for “seasoned photography collectors… people who know what they’re coming for, not just looking for decoration”. And her wish was granted. On the first day she had sold a set of 12 platinum prints, Of Aliens, Mermaids & Medusas (2022), by German photographer Jan C. Schlegel, priced £49,000, and was now selling the second of three editions sets for £55,000. And although it’s very much discouraged, there were red dots planted all around Guerin Projects space underneath photographs by London-based photographer James D. Kelly, editioned in series of 25 at up to £9,500 per print.

It’s not all about sales at the fair, however, says Robert Morat of the eponymous Berlin-based gallery, who has exhibited at eight of the nine editions of Photo London. This year, as in the past few, he presents one body of work by one artist— Fugue (2024) by London-based photographer Lydia Goldblatt. “Emerging artists deserve the attention of a solo booth,” he says. “As a continental European gallery, the cost of doing business in Britain is so ridiculously high [after Brexit regulation] that even if we sold out this booth, we would still be far off from really making money. We are here in order to get attention and visibility for the artist, because that's my main prerogative, and it’s our job as a gallery.”
