A structure that defines Mumbai in a snapshot, the Victoria Terminus, rechristened the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is an incredible legacy chiseled in stone.

The landmark Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus building stands tall and imposing in the heart of Mumbai, oblivious to the scores of people that traverse its hallways every day. The iconic railway station, steeped in history is quite-literally the nerve centre of the city, what with 30 lakh-odd commuters travelling through it on a daily basis. As the sea of people push, jostle and shove to make it into their designated local train within these old walls, it’s a scene juxtaposing the past and present perfectly.

What sets this building apart from many other heritage building is the fact that it’s still serving the same function – i.e. the headquarters of the Central Railway – since the time it was built. It’s little wonder then that the CST which is historically, architecturally and culturally so important made it to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. Figuring on the prestigious UNESCO list has heightened the awareness to preserve such historical buildings and also commenced major restoration work.

The Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee has done much work in this regard. “It’s our duty to safeguard these buildings that have been listed on UNESCO after a detailed survey. It’s the owner who is responsible for the maintenance of the buildings; in this case the Central Railway. However, if a certain building requires work, we send a notice to the concerned party,” say Mr. Afzulpurkar, Chairman of the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee. All new structures around the site have to be in harmony with the existing heritage structure.

Undoubtedly, the CST is one of Mumbai’s landmark buildings but there are equally impressive buildings in the vicinity, a legacy left by the Raj, that have weathered the passage of time along with it. Right opposite the railway station is the Bombay Municipal Corporation Building, ornately embellished with gargoyles and carvings; another creation by F.W. Stevens. Adjacent to this structure is the building that houses Mumbai’s oldest daily, The Times of India. From heads of state of film stars, The Times of India building has played host to many luminaries over the decades.

Within the radius of a few kilometers are many other masterpieces that make up the history of the city – The Gateway of India, The Taj Mahal Hotel, The Prince of Wales Museum (now known as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya) University Hall & Library, Rajabai Tower and the Asiatic Library to name a few.

Sadly, a number of historical buildings in Mumbai are in various states of disrepair. However, awareness is half the battle won and considerable efforts are being made to restore these works of art to their former glory. Over the decades, Mumbai has earned the moniker of the ‘city that never sleeps.’ But amidst all that buzz, lies a historical and architectural marvel that continues to fascinate all.

Formerly known as the Victoria Terminus (VT) after the then ruling Empress of British India, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is the most extravagant and magnificent gothic revival structures built in Mumbai. It is a must visit place for every visitor who comes to Mumbai. This 133-year-old heritage building is one of the biggest and busiest railway stations of the country apart from being one of the most magnificent and historic landmarks.

Declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Railway station is the headquarters of the Central Railways and well- connected to all parts of the country. The Victorian- Gothic Revival architecture in which the building is built takes one back to the colonial era and enjoy the marvels of its unique architecture.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is the second most photographed monument of the country after the Taj Mahal. The monument that bears a little semblance with St. Pancras Railway Station in London, looks incredibly beautiful during the night. The monument is lit up in colourful lights during the night which enhances the beauty and draws most people to photograph it.

The terminus has also been location for quite a few movies that were shot. The best examples being Slumdog Millionaire and Ra One.

History of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Mumbai

The work on building the Victoria Terminus, as CST was called then, had started in 1878 and construction was completed by 1887, almost 10 years from the year the work had started. The station was built to serve as the headquarters of the Great Indian Peninsular Railway, which is present day Central Railway.

The land on which the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is built used to be a warehouse for goods meant for import and export to be stored as Bombay, (as the city was known then) was a major and most important port in India. Before the CST was built, it was already home to India’s first railway station namely Bori Bandar. It was in 1853 that India’s first ever passenger train operated from Bori Bunder Station to Thane.

To meet the growing demands of one of the busiest ports of the country, a need of a bigger Railway Station had become the need of the hour. Hence, the idea of building a bigger station cropped up.

Change of Names

The station that was originally called Bori Bunder, terminus of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway from 1853 to 1888, was renamed as Victoria Terminus in celebration of the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria, the Empress of India. However, in 1996, the station was once again renamed after the great Maratha Warrior Emperor, Chhatrapati Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha Empire. It was renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus or CST as it is commonly called by the locals now.

In yet another move in December 2016, the ministry passed a resolution to rename the terminus once again to Chhatrapati Shivaji ‘Maharaj’ Terminus and the formal letter of name change was released in May 2017. However, locals still popularly use both the former names, i.e., VT and CST.

2008 Terrorist Attacks

The infamous terrorist attacks in Mumbai that left the city shaken had started from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. It is learned that on the night of 26th November 2008, the terrorists entered through the passenger waiting hall of CST and opened fire and threw grenades at the commuters for an hour.

There is a memorial built to commemorate the victims of the 2008 attack at the CST building.

Architecture of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Mumbai

The architectural marvel that the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is, stands out particularly for its advanced technical and structural solutions where industrial technology has been put together with gothic revival architecture. The final design of the terminus was designed by British architect and engineer, Frederick William Stevens whereas its watercolour sketch was done by draughtsman, Axel Haig.

The principle architectural style in which the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus was built is Victorian-Gothic Revival style of architecture. It had additions of Indian classical as well as Italian elements to it. The influences of the Indian classical elements can be seen in the arches, skyline, ground plan and turrets. The work on the tiles, wood carvings, metal iron & brass linings, stairway railings, grills of ticket houses were done by the students of Sir J. J. School of Arts.

The central dome, built without any centering, has got dovetail ribs with office structure connected to 330 feet long platform that leads to a 1200 feet long train shed. The way in which the entire dome was designed and planned is considered to be a unique feat of 19th century engineering and architecture. Being the focal point of the entire structure, the high central dome is an octagonal ribbed structure with a statue of a female holding a torch in her right hand pointing upwards and her left hand holding a spoked wheel. Apparently, the statue symbolizes progress.

The entrance gate columns have lions on either side that represent Great Britain and that of a tiger that represents India. The exterior structure is made of Sandstone, Marble and Limestone. Apart from the exteriors, the interiors are also decorated in great style, which include the floors, the high ceilings, the stone arches, and the walls of the interiors that were lined with glazed tiles manufactured by Maw & Co of Britain.

When it comes to mentioning the platforms, there are a total of 18 platforms in CST. 7 out of 18 are used for suburban trains and the rest of the 11 are for long distance trains. The terminus also houses AC dormitories or waiting rooms that have 20 beds for females and 58 beds for males.

Heritage tour of chhatrapati shivaji terminus mumbai.

The guided heritage tour inside the CST heritage museum is organized from Monday through Saturday. The tour is a one hour guided tour beginning at the heritage gallery on the ground floor. The heritage tour is all about the history of Indian Railways including a model of the locomotive used as the first train that operated between Bori Bunder and Thane in 1853.

The exhibits include a display of all erstwhile logos of all former Railways since every Railway line was a part of a separate individual unit, owned by a separate firm. In 1951, all units were brought together and named Indian Railways thereby making them a part of one single nationalised entity under the Government of India.

There is a wooden cash box with metal reinforcements that was used in the Grand Indian Peninsula (GIP) Railway. Also, on display is the grandfather clock, the pendulum of which needs to be rewind manually every week. The clock was made by John Walker & Co. of London.

The grand staircase has a stone lion at the foot that holds the coat of arms of the GIP Railway. The stairs of the grand staircase are made out of black stone that appear almost like a newly constructed one, lined by wrought iron balustrades that give an impeccable look to the entire staircase.

The high ceiling and arches of the central dome from the staircase looks equally extraordinary as the star chamber on the north wing of the ground floor does. The star chamber presently accommodates the ticketing counters.

Iconic CST Mumbai – The Nuances You Do Not Know

If you have been to Mumbai or if you live in the megapolis, you have used the CST Mumbai station. Maybe you have just passed by this beautiful station. Let me walk you through the history & quirky facts about this heritage railway station. A lot has been written about this lovely train terminus, so let me just give you some quirky facts and trivia about it. This includes the small nuances that you should not miss when you visit CST the next time.

CST Mumbai or Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Railway Station is India’s oldest and most beautiful railway station. Originally called Victoria Terminus or simply VT, UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 2004.

CST Railway Station stands where the story of Indian Railways began in 1853 when the first ever train chugged out of Bori Bunder station. It took 10 years to build this lovely station between 1878-88.

The other one also belongs to the railways – Mountain Railways of India including the Darjeeling Himalayan Rail .

The CST Mumbai Museum

Walk through the main gates of the Railway Station building. You can easily spot it with the two giant lions that guard this gate. To the right of this gate is the single-hall museum that aims to show you the history of Indian Railways when it was called the Great Indian Peninsula Railway.

The journey of Railways in Mumbai is traced through maps which are lovely – you not only see the growth of the rail network but also that of the city. It looks like they were growing hand in hand.

I loved the display of the architectural design sheets placed next to the actual building photographs. You can see how intricately the design was done on the drawing table. It almost feels the actual building was made as a 3-D image of the drawing. I quietly uttered a word of appreciation to architect F W Stevens. The next minute, I spotted an interesting communication between Stevens and the Railway department, where he demands an additional compensation of Rs 5000/ – Remember this was still 1888.

You see the various communications exchanged, the drawings, the logos, and even the good old silver cutlery.

Ferroequinology – Name for the study of railways

A look at the timetable would make you appreciate the one who designed it – giving you all the information in one square box. It has train timings, fares, distances, and all the stations.

If you thought the people of India took to trains without any persuasion, look at this advertisement for Deccan Queen – that still runs between Mumbai & Pune. Even the timetable was published on the front page of The Bombay Times. It is said that regular travelers on this train could even get their mail delivered on the Deccan Queen.

You can see the model of Sahib – one of three engines that pulled the first-ever train in India. The other two are called Sindh & Sultan.

GIPR had 10 directors initially and two of them were Indians – Jagannath Nana Shanker Shett and Cursetjee Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy.

The commemorative postage stamps issued on railways are on display. How I wish people could buy these stamps, maybe even their replicas.

It is said that 400 invited guests traveled on the first train that traveled between Bori Bunder as the CST area was then known and Thane some 35 km away on April 16, 1853.

21 gun salute was given to the train before its 14 carriages were pulled by the 3 engines – Sahib, Sindh & Sultan

High tea was arranged for everyone on board at Thane where special arrangements were made to receive the guest on board this historic ride. One can only imagine the importance of the people chosen for this special train.

Since there was a paucity of space, the ticketing office of GIPR operated from Shankar Shett’s home for some time.

The Star Chamber

When I first heard the word star chamber, I expected it to be a star-shaped chamber. I would have fooled myself had I shared it with anyone else. The chamber is actually where the ticket-issuing office is. If you have ever taken a train from CST Mumbai, you would have seen this chamber. However, to see the stars you have to stretch your neck and look at the ceiling. These are stars made of gold sparkling on the pistachio-green ceiling. The view of the arched room looks beautiful from the first floor.

Arches create an aura of it being a large durbar hall.

Do people buying tickets look up and admire or are they too busy?

In & Around the Iconic Dome of CST Mumbai

The dome stands tall at the center of the building. Come with me inside it, get up close & personal with this architectural masterpiece.

The doors leading to the staircase that takes you closer to the dome are a piece of beauty. Framed by a set of recessed arches, its wood shines as if it has just been polished. The brass fittings add a regal aura and you know you are entering a special space.

As you enter you see a lion with a coat of arms welcoming you with its towering presence.

Spiral Staircase

As soon as I took my eyes off the lion, they were beheld by the spiral staircase that goes closer to the dome. There is no support for this wide staircase except for the support that comes from the thick walls. The walls are good 8-10 feet thick. The sculpted wall behind the staircase frames it in a way that your eyes struggle to decide which is the most beautiful part of the visual.

There is fine Jaali work between the two levels.

On the first floor, you can step out and take a look at the upper stories of the building.

To reach the dome you have to take the narrow metal stairs, followed by another narrow staircase with almost nothing to hold. The stained glass that you see when you reach the top is worth all the effort.

The double layer of stained glasses tells the story of GIPR and highlights the journey from elephant rides to train coaches. When you stand right next to the dome you realize how big it is.

The view of the rest of the heritage building including the central railway office in the building behind this is lovely. The height changes the perspectives of the buildings surrounding the railway station.

CST Railway Station from the outside

The outer structure of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is majestic and imposing.

Notice some of these nuances:

The arches at 3 different levels represent 3 different architectural styles representing 3 different eras.

There is a bust of each of the 10 directors of GIPR or Great India Peninsular Railway.

The empty slot in the middle held a statue of Queen Victoria after whom the terminal was initially named. After independence, the statue was removed.

Gargoyles are the water management system of the heritage building. See the various animals that form the gargoyles all around the facade.

The most intriguing bit for me was the base of the windows with 16 different types of turbans carved as bas-reliefs. I can only guess that this was to represent the diversity of the native population.

The toilets in the corner look like a chamber, it is only when the guide points to the pipe running along that you figure out that it is a toilet.

Indian Flora and Fauna

The Railway Station is full of Indian flora and fauna. You can walk through the sculpted pillars and get a lesson about local biodiversity. My favorite though is this dancing peacock carved on one of the windows.

The lady on top looks small but she is good 16+ ft tall and is called – The Lady of Progress. She holds the wheel in her left hand symbolizing progress or movement towards progress. In her right hand, she holds the torch, much like the Statue of Liberty. Our Guide told us that this symbolizes the fact that the city never sleeps. Well, it seems it is in the DNA of Mumbai that it could never sleep.

Travel Tips for CST Mumbai

• You can take a guided tour of the Railway station that covers its heritage parts as well as the Railway Museum.
• The museum is open from 2 PM – 5 PM on weekdays. I wonder why they do not open on weekends as that is when the maximum number of visitors would come. Hope this changes soon.
• The heritage tour takes about an hour. The dome part that I mentioned above is not a part of the tour, the rest of everything is.
• At the time of writing, the tour ticket is priced at INR 200 with a special rate of INR 100 for students.

It is a lovely building, Antonina. It is also an important structure because story of Indian railway began here and it is probably one of the busiest railway stations in the world.

I wanted to have the tour for the CST Building. I did ask at the railway station counters, but they had no responses. From your write-up I realised why I missed it. Next time, a trip to see only the CST insides. It is a beautiful building. Every time I go there, I pause and look at all its beauties.

Try yoga at the Dhamma Giri Meditation centre or visit the Ghatandevi temple for a spiritual refreshing. If you are up for adventure, try trekking or camping out. How to get there: Igatpuri is connected with all neighboring cities by Maharashtra State Transport Corporation buses. If you're driving, use the eastern express highway to reach Thane. Igatpuri is a major railway station and there are regular trains to Igatpuri from most major cities. Tapovan express directly connects Igatpuri railway station with Mumbai CST.

How to get there : It takes about 2 hours 30 minutes to reach Kolad from Mumbai. Kolad falls on the Mumbai-Goa highway. If you are driving, you have to follow the Sion-Panvel Expressway and Mumbai-Pune Expressway. There’s no bus stand at Kolad, and the nearest bus stops are Murud and Khandala. While Murud is 43 km away, Khandala is almost 75km from Kolad. One has to hire a cab or a rickshaw for the further journey. One can also travel via Roha, which is only 11.3km from Kolad.

This is a tribal hill station and a very less known place very close to Mumbai. The Jai Vilas Palace here is the main attraction here and was once built by the tribal kings of this region. This place does not need a lot of money to spend and thus can be visited at any time of the year. Go inside the palace and check out the ancient items and paintings including those bearing the famous Worli Art form. The Hanuman Point nearby is a place from where you get an awesome view of the whole hill station filled with natural beauty.

How to get there: Igatpuri is the nearest railway station to reach Jawhar by train. Another closest railway station is Dahanu on the Western Railway line which can be reached after travelling 65km by rail. The closest airport located at a distance of 80km to Jawhar is Nashik. You can take a taxi from Igatpuri station or Nashik airport to reach Jawhar. If you are driving, reach Jawhar from Mumbai, use Eastern Express highway to reach Thane and then head towards Bhiwandi – Yewai – Murhe – Mahapoli – Ambadi – Kodus and reach Wada. From Wada turn left towards Pali – Onde – Vikramgad – Sakhare to reach Jawhar.

Bhandardara

The best views of the Bhandardara Lake and the Randha Waterfall can be enjoyed from this place. The lake was formed when the Wilson Dam was being constructed over the Pravara River. The waters when left from the dam form narrow rivulets here. Though not in a very good condition, a walking tour is worth here. The other times you can spend angling the sides of the dam. The Ratnagad fort is a nearby attraction from Bandardara.

How to get there: From Mumbai and Pune there are many trains and buses available to reach Lonavala. Once you are at Lonavala station you can hire a taxi or private cab to reach Rajmachi fort.

This is a crater which is said to have been formed long ago when a large meteorite crashed on the earth forming this crater. It is a slippery way with an undulating terrain. The steps you see here are artificial and tend to crumble away very easily. As you get successful to enter the crater, you can visit the temples of Renukadevi, Ganapati, Daityasudana and Gaimukh. Legends also say that Emperor Akbar used to bath with soaps made from the green waters of this crater cum lake.

Hospet to Hampi distance is just 13 km and takes around 27 minutes to reach by road. There are no direct flights play between Mumbai and Hampi.
