I have like maybe 8-10 tabs open ... 2GB RAM. -_- And this builds up over time - it's almost feels like a memory leak. Safari should just purge the old's pages from RAM and keep it's memory usage under 1GB - 1GB at most or scale it with the number of tabs. Firefox doesn't use that much RAM (FF is actually the most efficient with RAM I noticed), even Chrome doesn't use that much (more than FF but significantly less than Safari). I have only 4GB of RAM. A web browser eating up half of it, leaving no free RAM, slowing stuff down (as the OS starts purging things out to HD) is not acceptable.

Hello, I have a 13" Mid 2013 MBA base model on OSX 10.8.5 that seems to be acting up every time i use safari (rainbow beach ball). It'll pop up every minute or so while i'm using safari and freezes if i play a game on Facebook. While typing this thread there's a slight delay where i'll type the words, but they wont appear until a second later. I have no extensions installed on safari. I've closed all my apps and only have 3 or 4 tabs open. The laptop isn't hot underneath, so it can't be a heat issue. Could the integrated GPU (HD 5000) be the issue in that it isn't powerful enough for heavy flash/shockwave website?

I just tried using chrome and although there is a slight lag i am no longer getting the beach ball anymore, so it appears that safari is the issue. There are Wi-fi issues with it not working after sleeping issues with mavericks and i want to avoid Yosemite so upgrading is not an option for me. I can deal with a slight lag/delay, but the beach ball and safari freezing was driving me crazy. Thank you everyone for your help.

Safari 6.0.5 asks for password on download
I have this problem on both a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro. Both are running OSX 10.7.5.
Since loading Safari 6.0.5 I've noticed a problem downloading Zips and Videos from some sites. When I right click on the download link and select Download Linked File, Safari asks me for my user ID and password. Then it downloads a 44 byte file named bandwidth.php.html instead of the file I want. If I select Download Linked File As, I get the desired file, but if it is a Zip, it doesn't unzip automatically.
With earlier versions of Safari I was not asked for a user ID and password with each download.
Last week I had this problem and after a large number of trials I was able to stop it. Now it's reoccurred.
Has anyone else seen this kind of behavior? Is there a solution? I haven't yet tried switching back to Safari 6.0.

If it's small(ish) sites - a bandwidth file usually means that the site has exceeded some download limit, perhaps triggered by certain types of content.
Test in another user account, and if possible - share some example sites/files here.

What is selected as your download folder in Safari > Preferences > General ?
Jul 19, 2013 11:26 AM in response to andyBall_uk
I've only run into this on two sites so far. I don't think is really a bandwidth problem because the same sites work OK when I "Download Linked File As..." However, even that calls up the password prompt. If it were really a bandwidth problem, I would expect the same result with either form of download.
I rebooted my Mac and that didn't help.
I checked my extensions. There was only one: DIVX Plus Web Player. I disabled it and found a workaround! With that extension disabled, I'm only prompted for a password on my first download. After that everything works fine.
I'd still like to understand what is going on here, but I can live with the current situation now.

I have a number of download folders that I use to sort my downloads and save time. Before I start downloading, I set the desired folder using preferences. I've learned that I must actually open the folder when selecting it in preferences to ensure my downloads will go there. It seems that the "Download Linked File As..." command will disregard my selection if not while the "Download Linked File" command is more foregiving.
Jul 19, 2013 12:54 PM in response to Rich Cohen
What I'm getting at is whether the download location is in your home folder. If it is, please do as follows.
Back up all data . Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted . In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer , then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard ( command-C ):
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U . The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities , then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window ( command-V ). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery . When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return . A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password .
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs , click the Reset button.
▹ Restart
from the menu bar.

Thank you for taking the time to help me and for the long and detailed instructions you just provided.
My download location is not in my home folder. I have four internal drives. The boot drive is a 500 Meg solid state drive. Most of my downloads are to drive 2, a 3 TB HD. My download folders are normally empty when I start a download series.
I have three accounts on this Mac. One for personal use, one for business and one for programming. All three have admin rights. I'm the only user of this Mac. I was also able to reproduce this problem on my MacBook Pro.
Based on your instructions, I'm not sure whether to proceed since my download folder is on a different drive.
About 3 months ago I used Terminal to set ownership of nearly all the files on drive 2.
Jul 19, 2013 1:45 PM in response to Rich Cohen
Select the folder to which you're trying to download in the Finder and open the Info dialog.
- Does the dialog show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section?
- In the General section, is the box labeled Locked checked?
Jul 19, 2013 1:56 PM in response to Linc Davis
Yes, I have read and write authority for this folder.
No, the folder is not locked.
I can download to the folder. I have done this from many sites including the ones that are giving me a problem. For those sites I can download if I used "Download Linked File As..." and provide my password instead of simply "Download Linked File". The strange behavior is the sudden appearance of this password request and the presence of the bandwidth file in response when I simply "Download Linked File."
Jul 19, 2013 4:59 PM in response to Rich Cohen
So sometimes you're prompted to authenticate when you download a file to this folder, and sometimes not? What about other folders, such as the Desktop?
Jul 19, 2013 6:00 PM in response to Linc Davis
I think I've had this problem with two folders on different drives because I've had this problem with two web sites. For most web sites I do not have this problem at all. I've never tried to download to the desktop.
For the two sites in question, I've seen three patterns.
1. Every time I try to download I get prompted for my user ID and password. If I'm downloading a video, the video downloads correctly. If I'm downloading a ziped folder, I get the bandwidth file. This pattern seems to occur after I haven't downloaded anything from one of those web sites for a few days. It happened for a full day about 2 weeks ago and again today for about 4 hours.
2. The first time I try to download, I'm prompted for my user ID an password and then subsequent downloads work in a normal manner. This has happened a couple of times in addition to the final fix of my type 1 problems.
3. Downloads work normally. I'm not prompted for my user ID since I've already signed on to the site and downloads work as expected. This has happened 4-5 times in the past 2 weeks on the sites in question.
I just tried a test on my laptop. Earlier today I was getting type 1 behavior. Just now I got a varient of type 1. Safari asked for my password for each of 2 files, but the zips downloaded correctly. However, I had to expand the zips by clicking on them. They did not unzip automatically. I checked and my Safari pref have "Open "safe" files after downloading" check.
I checked for extensions and found McAfee Site Advisor present. I removed it. I downloaded a third zip. Again I had to enter my user ID and password. Again I had to manually unzip it.
I rebooted my laptop and the problem still remains unchanged.
Jul 19, 2013 6:15 PM in response to Rich Cohen
Do it recursively for your download folder(s), wherever they are. Repeat as necessary
sudo chown -R $UID:staff /path/to/download/folder
Jul 19, 2013 6:46 PM in response to Rich Cohen
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
Jul 20, 2013 6:57 AM in response to Linc Davis
OK. I did the test on my laptop. It was easier there because there are no periferals or expansion cards to remove.
The problem remains. Before the test I was getting type 1 behavior. After rebooting in safe mode I continued to get type 1 behavior. By the way, that bandwidth.php.html file contains the following text "You must be logged inn to access this content". As a further test, in Safari preferences I disabled all Internet plug-ins and I deleted all cookies. Then, using Keychain Access, I deleted all internet passwords and web site passwords. I then reopened Safari. As expected I was prompted for my user ID and password when I entered the site. The problem remains the same. Also, using "Download Linked File As..." works correctly although it does not unZip the file.
While still in safe mode, I did some more experimenting. All of my tests have been with Zipped folders. I tried downloading a video. It asked for my password, but then the file downloaded successfully. I did not get another copy of the bandwidth.php.html file. Then I tried another Zipped folder and got the same type 1 behavior.
It happens that I have a copy of Safari 5.0.5 on my laptop. I tried running that. I expected it would work, but guess what. It didn't ask for a password, but for a zip folder I get the same .html message about being logged on. For a video the download works. With Safari 5.0.5 the "Download Linked File As..." downloads the .html message also.
I believe I was wrong in assuming this problem was related to Safari 6.0.5. I now believe it is related to the web sites. It is possible that both are run by the same operator. I am contacting there tech support now. I'll post what I learn here to close out this issue if my current estimate is correct.
Jul 20, 2013 8:11 AM in response to Rich Cohen
You're being prompted for the name and password of a user on the web server, not on your computer.
Jul 20, 2013 8:54 AM in response to Linc Davis
You're probably right, but only with Safari 6.0.5. A few minutes ago I tried a test with FireFox. I had version 12 installed at that time. It did not prompt for a password, but it did display the "You must be ..." message in the browser. Then I updated to FireFox 22. That worked fine. No prompt and the dowloads worked fine. This sounds like a compatability issue between that site and Safari. My confusion was that its a new problem that coincided with Safari 6.0.5. Now I think the site software was modified in a way that affects safari.
