Kabini Backwaters Forest Safari

Kabini Backwaters Forest Safari is a popular experience conducted by the Karnataka Forest Department in Kabini river. The Karnataka Forest department operates two types of safaris in Kabini- one is the jeep safari and the other is boat safari in Kabini River. The boat safari lasts for close to 90 minutes and guests may see elephants mud bathing on the shores, several birds such as cormorants, cranes, darters along the river banks, crocodiles as well as snakes.

Kabini Boat Safari Timings: Boat Safari in Kabini river is done twice a day- 3.30 PM to 6.15 PM and 6.30 AM to 9.15 AM

Cost: Cost of a boat safari is included in the room rental paid by guests of Kabini River Lodge operated by Jungle Lodge & Resorts . For external guests a charge is payable, which may vary based on nationality (Indians/foreigners) and weekday/weekend. When you book a stay in any resorts in the Kabini area, your host will arrange for a boat safari for you. Slots will be limited on each safari hence advance booking is strongly recommended.

Note: Boat safari may be suspended during summer months when water level is too low or during rainy season when river may be overflowing.

How to reach Kabini:

Kabini is 80 kms from Mysuru and 240 kms from Bengaluru. Mysuru is well connected by air, rail and road network. From Mysuru Kabini can be reached by taxi.

There are two best ways of discovering the Wildlife Sanctuary, by jeep safari and on a boat. The river Kabini has divided the Nagarhole National Park into two and the Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary is the smaller half of it. Due to the popularity of these safaris, we advise you to book in advance.

Nagarhole National Park lies between Mysore and Coorg districts. It is the 37th Tiger Reserve in Indiaandan ideal destination for travelers and wildlife lovers.

The nearest airport is Kempegowda International airport, Bengaluru. Upon arrival at Bengaluru Airport, you will be received by our guide who will accompany you to your hotel. On Day 1, you will stay in Bengaluru.

After a tedious flight, you may like to have lunch and take some rest. In the evening, you can explore the posh and amazing city life of Bengaluru. If you are a party person, Bengaluru has a lot of things to make you happy.

Visit some pubs in the evening and lighten yourself up before your trip to Kabini. You can also consider exploring the Lalbagh Gardens and some famous restaurants to give a nice kick to your taste buds.

If you prefer to come by road, Mysore is the nearest railway station. Upon arrival at Mysore Station, you will be received by our guide who will accompany you to your hotel. Kabini Getaway - Kabini Wildlife Group Tour Schedules

Sep 9-11, 2022 open.

After a 4.5-hour-drive from Bengaluru, participants reach Kabini by noon. Following a leisurely lunch and a round of introduction to understand one another better, we mull on what’s in store for the next two days and embark on our first safari by 03:30 p.m.

Navigating through the excellent network of roads in the Nagarahole jungle, we enjoy an inaugural taste of the wild, keeping our eyes peeled for action on the ground, the air and the canopy.

After hopefully an eventful ride, we return to camp at 06:30 p.m. and relax over tea, following with a Wildlife movie show. Later, we enjoy a scrumptious supper and retire for the night.

An early morning wake-up call and tea will set the tone for the morning safari at 06:30 a.m. Cutting through the freshness of the morning, we pursue materialization of wildlife and enjoy the morning freshness of the Jungle.

Upon our return from the excursion at 09:30 a.m., a hot breakfast will await us, and after satiating our hunger we go on short joy ride on the Kabini back water. After lunch, perhaps a brief nap and tea, we reenter the forest with more hope for cat luck, let our hair down and make a lot of stories of the sights we encounter.

Having spent a cumulative five hours in the wild for the day, we walk into camp a happy bunch and relate our tales over tea.

Talek River Area, Masai Mara

Checking out from our Nairobi hotel after an early breakfast, we pick up the participants arriving this morning (if any) and make our way to the heart of the Migration action, the legendary Masai Mara, which we reach by afternoon.

After lunch close to the entrance of the Mara, we start our first game drive en route to our first destination around the lodge area.

The transitory herds may be seen very close to the lodge and sometimes a little further away but there is no chance of missing them. Feeling our way around, we will understand the current state of the Migration.

After the drive, we check in to exclusive and cosy tents at the first camp of the Tour, the lodge. Once fresh, we exchange notes about our initial observations and experiences, and hear insights from other participants before dining and retreating to our rooms to tuck in for the night.

The lodge is a lovely property located stunningly, right near the Talek River, which is one of the two rivers (the other being the Mara River itself) which the migratory herds cross. Ergo, this property has been deliberately and carefully chosen to give us quick and easy access to all the action.

We spend the whole day looking for crossings as well as predator and other action, while the Guide takes a call on returning to the lodge for lunch based on the prevailing situation.

In the evening you enjoy a scrumptious supper and retire for the night.

Mara Triangle, Masai Mara

Having explored the Talek River side, it’s now time to proceed to the celebrated Mara Triangle area and look for action around the Mara River, so after a morning drive around the Talek, we cross over to the Triangle and check in to the delightful lodge.

After lunch we enjoy an introductory ride in the area before returning to the lodge for another interactive session, we call ChitraTantra, before supper and sleep.

We enjoy the next three days in the very heart of the Migration around Serena and the Mara River, leveraging the Guide’s rich experience to get to the right places and make memorable moments to capture the scale and wonder of the dramas unfolding before us.

Every morning we start at 06:30 a.m. after an early breakfast and hope to catch action in the quintessentially spectacular savannah light and after the post-lunch afternoon safari, return after sunset to unwind.

After having spent a hopefully eventful time photographing the Migration in the Mara, we check out after breakfast and return to Nairobi by lunch, whence we take the departing flights for our abodes, where a wealth of images will be processed and many captivating stories told to our families.

Amboseli National Park

Our fleet of safari vehicles carrying the park guide will pick participants who have landed in the morning from the Nairobi Airport, and participants who have arrived a day earlier from their hotels, at around 06:30 a.m. Once everybody is on board, we undertake a four-hour drive to Amboseli National Park. A mutual introduction session and a brief by the guide to set basic expectations for the tour will be followed by lunch.

After lunch will ensue our first safari of the tour – recipe for a memorable moment for any first-time Africa visitor and something that, even after all these visits, gets the skipper’s adrenaline pumping. Driving through the park will acquaint you with the African landscape and give you but a glimpse of the exciting time ahead.

An entire memorable day will be spent out in the picturesque expanses of Amboseli, where views of elephants with the magnificent Kilimanjaro in the backdrop have been specially designed by nature to enthrall. Apart from the pachyderms, we are likely to photograph ostriches, hyaenas, lions, cheetahs and a whole lot of attractive wildlife.

Lake Nakuru National Park

After breakfast, we depart for Nakuru. Arriving just before lunch, we embrace our home for the next two days overlooking the beautiful Lake Nakuru. Following a scrumptious lunch, we embark on the afternoon safari, seeking the chief spectacle of the flamingo congregation and over 400 other species of birds found here.

In the evening we enjoy a tribal dance and celebration before an appetizing supper, and retire for the day.

Setting off after breakfast, we spend as much time in the park as we can in order to sight the plentiful wildlife of Nakuru. The early morning drive will be followed by lunch and an evening safari.

This being an excellent location to see the elusive leopard, we take our chances to spot the spotted beauty of Nakuru. Efforts will also be made to photograph white rhinos and black rhinos.

Between the rides, we meet at the picturesque Baboon Hill overlooking the lake and its flamingo formations, and discuss various topics of nature photography and the natural history of Africa. Meanwhile, here, ultra wide-angle perspectives of baboons, a fixture atop the hill, are a distinct prospect.

For participants who want to relax and take the afternoon easy, the beautiful lodge with plenty of trees and a great restaurant is a fabulous place to rest.

Masai Mara Game Reserve

After breakfast, a pleasant drive across the dramatic Great Rift Valley brings you through the Narok Township, a major Maasai administrative centre, to Kenya’s most precious wildlife sanctuary, Masai Mara Game Reserve.

Masai Mara is home to the colorful Maasai tribe, who may be seen around the borders of the park, with Morans (‘warriors’) loping across the plains, young boys herding goats, or elders grouped under a tree discussing the matters of the day.

Wildlife viewing is never dull in the Mara, and patience is often rewarded with unique sightings. By now hopefully the group will have been acquainted with the African bush, so we seek to make the most of the bounty on offer.

Staying inside the park will ensure a great experience and early access to photography hotspots, so we may catch a lion pride gearing up for a hunt or a solitary leopard retrieving its kill from the high branches of an Acacia tree merely a few hundred metres from the camp.

Every morning while at Masai Mara, we start our day with packed breakfast at 06:30 a.m. and venture into the bush. For participants who are agreeable to spending the entire day in the field, packed lunch boxes will be provided to keep us going the whole day, thereby maximizing wildlife viewing and photography opportunities.

An occasional afternoon shower may be encountered but this will in no way mean a dampener, for the animals continue to be seen and what’s more, it will open up the prospect of making evocative images of wildlife in the rain. And when the clouds have passed, the light that illuminates the scene can serve to illustrate the meaning of the word ‘ethereal’ better than any lexicon in the world.

Meeting at specific points in the savannah, we learn and discuss various topics on photography and natural history of Africa and the Mara in general. These two days are tipped to be the highlight of the Tour with plenty of wildlife on show.

Maasai Village Optional Tour

While at Masai Mara, based on the group’s inclination, the Guide can plan a visit to a local Maasai Village for a few hours in the day to learn and understand the Maasai culture, their way of life and their interesting community living. This optional Tour costs an additional USD 30 per person.

Balloon Safari Optional Tour

A ride in a hot-air balloon over the endless expanses of the savannah is an ultimate safari experience. We leave the lodge before dawn, when the sky is clear, the air brisk and the conditions perfect. As the sun rises over the Mara plains, our balloon lifts off – a bright splash of colour rising gracefully into the infinite blue. A stunning panorama unfolds below us and the balloon basket becomes our lookout post for a bird’s-eye view of the Mara’s magnificence. We float silently just a few hundred feet above large herds of wild animals. Upon landing, we celebrate the flight with a glass of champagne, after which the retrieval safari cruisers take us back to our driver. This optional ride costs an additional USD 450 per person.

After a scrumptious breakfast, we drive out making sure we arrive by lunchtime at an Indian restaurant in Nairobi. After lunch, we are transferred to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for our home-bound flights.

The Tour ends but your love affair with African wildlife has just begun.

OPTIONAL EXTENSION AT MASAI MARA

Participants who feel the need to stretch their Tour are welcome to stay back on the following nights, to experience two more full days at the Mara at their own pace. The schedule for the two days will remain the same while we venture to deeper areas of the Mara on the full-day game drives, maximizing our chances of bringing back stunning photographs. This extension will be charged additionally. Please express your interest in the extension while booking the Tour to know more.

With the extension having come to an end, following an early breakfast, we drive out making sure we arrive by lunchtime at an Indian restaurant in Nairobi. After lunch, we are transferred to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for our home-bound flights.

On arrival at Bangalore railway station/airport, meet our representative who will be there for your welcome. Thereafter, our representative will take you to Coorg by road, which is about five hour journey. On reaching Coorg, we will check in at the hotel. The evening time is free at leisure. During your free time, you can stay back in your spacious room and rest or enjoy the modern amenities of the hotel. An overnight stay in the hotel.

Coorg is traveller's delight and famous for its bulk coffee plantation, waterfalls and soothing weather. The place is one of the major tourist attractions in the Southern India that attract thousands of visitors from around the world.

In the morning after breakfast, we will proceed for Bangalore's local sightseeing tour. In our day tour, we will visit some of the major attractions of the city and have a lifetime experience. Some of the places we will be having in our Bangalore day tour include Vidhan Sabha, Lal Bagh Botanical Garden, a government edifice built in Neo Dravidian style, Tipu's Palace, Bangalore Palace, etc. later in the evening , we will return back to the hotel for an overnight stay.

Bangalore is the capital of Karnataka state of India. Situated in southern India on the Deccan Plateau, at an altitude of about 900 m (3,000 ft) above sea level, the city is acknowledged for its pleasant climate all over the year.

Coorg - Kabini

Today after having breakfast in the hotel, we will check out and drive to Kabini, which is about two and a half hour journey. On arrival, check in at your pre-booked hotel. Afterwards, get ready to explore the major attractions of Kabini such as Kabini River, Kabini Dam, Nagarhole National Park, Irpu Falls, Rameswara Temple, etc. The seightseeing tour of Kabini required a complete day where in you can explore most of its tourist places. After these places throughout the day, we will return back to our hotel in the late evening and enjoy a comfortable overnight stay.

Kabini is one of the most preferred travel destinations among the families, couples and travel lovers. Located near Bangalore, the place is blessed with rich forest cover, waterfalls and valleys. It also contains an abundance of vegetation.

After breakfast in the morning, we will be visiting a tribal village to explore the lifestyle of locals. On reaching the village, we will interact with locals to learn more about their unique culture and lifestyle. After having lunch with locals in the village only, we will head for Elephant Jungle safari to explore the real natural beauty of the place. This region is part of the Nagarhole National Park and encompassed by the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve – one of the largest contiguous forest habitats. Well known for its charismatic megafauna, including Tigers, Leopards, Elephants and Gaurs, these dense forests hold a veritable diversity of animal and plant life.

Tour Highlights

On the banks of the River Kabini, the world-renowned Kabini River Lodge has been a haunt for wildlifers and wildlife photographers for many decades. It has become so famous that the safari region is now affectionately referred to as “Kabini”. In fact, it is part of the Nagarhole National Park, one of India’s finest tiger reserves. In addition to the National Animal of India, the forest is well-known for its elephant herds, stealthy leopards, mighty gaurs and its stunning birdlife. This photography tour aims to rediscover the joys of exploring the forest and learn about the wildlife and how to photograph it with a different perspective.

A wildlife photographer is a story-teller who interprets natural history through her/his photographs. To tell a strong story through a photograph, the photographer needs to have a good understanding of nature, in addition to photography techniques.With a wide range of learning and experience activities, this is one tour that will give you a 360-degree view of wildlife photography, and provides a balanced approach between natural history and wildlife photography.

Learn about the natural history of the deciduous forests and wildlife photography techniques from our Darter Photography Expert through classroom sessions and on-the-field guidance.
Explore the forest on land in an open safari vehicle. Get an opportunity to see the 2 big cats (Bengal Tigers and Leopards) along with herds of Elephants, Gaurs, Chital and Sambar, not to mention the antics of Gray Langurs and the shy Barking Deer. You may also come across forest birds like the Malabar Trogon, Spot-bellied Eagle Owl, Racket-tailed Drongo, Crested Serpent Eagle, Crested Hawk Eagle and many more.
Cruise down the Kabini Reservoir in a boat to view the beauty of the forest as it meets the river. Huge herds of Elephants have been seen here. You may also get an opportunity to see the playful Smooth-coated Otters, basking Marsh Crocodiles and birds like the Peregrine Falcon, Osprey, Grey-headed Fish Eagle and flocks of Egrets, Herons and Storks.
Experience the beautiful sunset by the river, with the cool air, the glittering water and the herds of Chital and Elephants grazing by. You might get some opportunities to photograph silhouettes and animals/birds against the setting sun.
Walk around the Kabini River Lodge with our Darter Photography Expert on a guided Nature Trail. In the past, we have come across Oriental Honey Buzzards, Forest Wagtails and a host of other birds within the campus. Smaller animals like Butterflies and Spiders (including the breathtaking Indian Ornamental Tarantula) would also keep us engrossed during this nature trail.
Review your photographs everyday with the Darter Photography Expert. In our highly-appreciated review sessions, we approach the photograph from the photographer’s story and perspective. We guide the photographer in working on both the strengths and improvement areas to convey a better story through the photographs.
Discuss your observations and learning with the group in our unique debriefing sessions. Everyone has a unique perspective in observing natural phenomena and photographing them. These discussions have always helped our participants learn a lot from each other, in addition to fostering lasting friendships.
Stay at the Kabini River Lodge (run by Jungle Lodges & Resorts), an internationally acclaimed resort and erstwhile hunting lodge of the Maharaja of Mysore. Located on the fringes of the forest on the banks of the River Kabini, the resort offers an unmatched experience in the wild.

In our classroom sessions and on-the-field guidance, we discuss wildlife photography and natural concepts and observations from the fundamental principles. As in all our tours, the group size would be limited so that the Darter Photography Expert can interact closely with every participant.

Wildlife enthusiasts who are not photographers, but are keen to see and experience the forests of Nagarhole National Park, are also welcome to join this group. This trip will keep you enthralled from start to finish.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 (Friday). Reach the Kabini River Lodge at Karapura (run by Jungle Lodges and Resorts) by noon. We check into our tents, relax for a bit and gather for lunch. After lunch, we have a welcome session where we go through a round of introductions (in case we haven’t done that already) followed by an orientation on the tour and wildlife at Kabini by the Darter Photography Expert.

It is then time for the first safari of the tour. We get into the vehicle allotted to us and head out into the jungle for the evening safari. The cool breeze and the greenery of the forest keeps us company as we experience and photograph the myriad forms of life in the forest – the mighty elephants, the huge herds of Chital, the colourful birds…may be even a big cat.

After the safari, we gather for a session on Fundamental Techniques of Wildlife Photography followed by reviews of all the photographs clicked on the evening drive. After dinner, we retire for the day.

Day 2 (Saturday). At dawn, we wake up, have a cup of tea and head out for our second foray into the jungle . Every safari in the forest is a delightful experience and, on a sunny day, the soft morning light might give us some wonderful photography opportunities.

After breakfast, we head out for a nature trail around the resort . We encounter many species of wildlife in the undergrowth – butterflies, dragonflies, spiders, ants and a few birds.

After lunch, the Darter Photography Expert will review the photographs taken during the morning safari. We’ll have a session on different kinds of Light in Wildlife Photography.

It’s time again for the third safari. This time with a difference. We head out on the boat safari along the Kabini Reservoir. Be prepared to fill up your memory cards as we encounter flocks of Cormorants, Egrets, Darters and Painted Storks, raptors like the Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Osprey and Peregrine Falcon, Otters if we are lucky and, who knows, a big cat out for a sip or a hunt! The setting sun plays out an elaborate drama over the reservoir and we’ll try to photograph different perspectives of the forest at sunset.

After the safari, we have a discussion about the observations of the past two days in the forest and photography learning/experiences of all the participants. We’ll head out on a night walking trail around the resort before dinner.

Day 3 (Sunday). The last morning of the tour is here. We head out into the forest for our last safari to photograph the magnificence of the forest. After breakfast, its time to bid goodbye to the amazing forest, with many memories and (hopefully) full memory cards.

In addition to the above, the accompanying Darter Photography Expert would help you with:

On-field assistance during the safaris from a photography as well as a naturalist’s perspective
Sessions on photography that would help you get good photographs during the tour
Photography review sessions to give you feedback on your photographs

What started off as a fascination for birds in a lake behind his house turned into a journey to different parts of India. For this IIM Bangalore graduate, the passion for wildlife and travel enabled him to charter his own course outside the corporate world. He has explored places as diverse as the rainforests of the Western Ghats, the salt marshes of Kutch, the grasslands of Tal Chapar, the deciduous forests of South and Central India, the high-altitude plateau of Ladakh, the coasts of peninsular India, the forests of North-east India and the islands of Andaman. Beyond India, he has explored some of the world’s greatest wildernesses in Antarctica, Africa and New Zealand.

He has served on the evaluation panel for Karnataka Eco-Tourism Development Board’s Naturalist Certification Program, where naturalists from Jungle Lodges & Resorts and other resorts across Karnataka were evaluated and certified in the first-ever program of its kind in the country. He has also spent over a month at Kabini River Lodge in the summer of 2014 evaluating their naturalists and formulating training requirements to help them interpret the forest better.
