Don't choose it!

Really bad service! We were going to La Guajira and we were waiting for the guide from 5am in the entrance of Tayrona Park! Nobody came and until ours several phone calls, at 7am they told us that the tour was cancelld! WTF! Then we came back to Santa Marta to get the money back but we had to go to another office to recuperate it! We ask for a compensation and they told us "no way". The tratement was unpolite and we were in the middle of the road knowing nothing. Definitely a waste of time and money. I puted 1 star because there's no option to put 0!!! Choose another operator.

All our treks to the Lost City Teyuna are guided by the hand of our native indian guides. Unfortunately our tours to La Guajira are not operated by our indigenous guides but are operated by a commercial alliance with a local agency of local guides in the region. We request a timely response from the operating agency and we are truly committed to the quality of the service. For us it is very important to take into account all the opinions of our travelers.

First things first, we may have had bad luck with the weather. We had four days of rain, a weather warning and unbelievable amounts of rain throughout the trek. You have to know that all the tour service providers share their sleeping spaces and the food. Wiwa provides decent food, there are snacks, fruits and juices inbetween the big meals, so that was fine, but you get that with all the other providers as well. The Wiwa sleepover was really bad, all the beds smell like wet dog and the pillows look rotten (both comments from other hikers). Of course there is a high humidity in the jungle, but in other camps, we did not have these problems...so it is not impossible to keep your camp fresh. Our guide Lorenzo only told us anything if we asked, never out of his own motivation. In the camps we sat next to other groups (Expotours and Magic tours) and their guides got all the group together and told them about the history of colombia, the drug wars and how it affected the region of Ciudad perdida. I was very impressed with their knowledge and their stories, our guide was nowhere to be found...so we could not even ask. The groups by other companies walked together, our group was split up, our guid walked somewhere inbetween, his guidance was so bad that even one of us missed a stop and was separated from the group until she figured it out by herself. We had a translator that was hired by wiwa just an hour before the tour left, he did not know how hard it would be and nobody from wiwa told him. He did nothing wrong, but wiwa left him standing in the rain (literally, since they did not tell him to be prepared for four days of rain)... All in all I would say: Do the trek, check the weather beforehand, bring the best rainproof gear you got. Everything will be wet. Everything will be muddy. Do not choose Wiwa tours and you will be fine. If the weather is right, you will have fun, otherwise it will be a test of mental strength.

I did the five day trek with the recently opened 5 day trek. I thought it would be easier but you actually do an extra day of walking. The first day you spend in an indigenous village, but you don't really interact, which is a shame. Our guide Jose Manuel was a bit shy in the beginning but grew as the trip went on. He was extremely helpful, willing to answer our thousand and one answers and always made sure we were fine during the trek. He even carried by backpack when was exhausted. We had the fortune of being only four in the group and the guides wife and cousin tagged along, which made our very lucky as they told us customs, habits and traditions. After all we are invited to visit their sacred site. I am glad I went with Wiwa, their four day group also had an excellent guide. The second night it was only our group and we played some games, lit a fire. At the site Out guide Jose Manuel made us wake up early to be the first at the site. There we did a purification ritual and he showed us around sharing his knowledge. He was very concerned that we got something out of it too. I am very happy and feel lucky to have been invited. Our cook Juan david was great, also chatty and helpful, great cook. The wiwa company could be more organised and I found it surprising that no first aid kit is available at the camps. Apart from vista hermoso camps the other ones could be cleaner. I am not sure from which camp, but I came back full of fleas (could be the hostel in Palomino too). I suggest you buy an anti mosquito thingie for fabrics and spray a silk liner and sleeping clothes. Be aware you will be bitten. I didn't get sick, but bring anti septic to wash your hands and only drink the water they purify. Ask if it's ok to drink. The trek is very hard at times. I am used to walking but not uphill. Bring one or max 2 tshirt to walk in. Long sleeved to sleep in and long trousers for ciudad perdida. Bring as little as possible. I brought trek sandals but they were heavy and often I crossed rivers barefoot. Wore scarpa monitors boots and they were great. Some wore trainers but they can be too slippery. Great trek and I recommend wiwa for their guides, even if the organisation is disorganised ( forgot to send food for the first day of trekking). I would also like it to be more transparent as where the money goes.

My advice: - go with WIWA TOURS - do the 4 DAY trek (not 5 day) - in rainy seasons definitely wear walking boots - take alcohol gel, sleeping bag liner, walking stick (or find one) and loo roll! - not for the faint hearted! - ask for an English translator if you do not speak Spanish - chat to the Wiwa and there children and learn as much as possible! - if poss, book a nice place after with a hot shower, pillows and a massage! We went to Cayena near Costeño beach There are now 5 companies you can book directly with for the Lost City trek. Wiwa Tours is the ONLY one that you can go with INDIGENOUS PEOPLE. Wiwa are descended from the Tayrona people (who built the city 2000 years ago). I did a lot of reading up before this trek and there are many mixed reviews. Do not be put off by the bad reviews! But do be careful with your hygiene i.e. Alcohol gel your hands in the large camps and use the water they provide to brush your teeth. I have also been to Machu Pichu and this was completely different, as you may see no other people apart from your group in certain areas of the city. 2000 people lived there, so it was bigger than I expected. In high season, a maximum of 80 people a day visit the Lost City. If you do not like going up hill, getting wet/muddy (in rainy season), getting bitten by mosquitos, having basic toilet/shower facilities and sleeping in hammocks or bunkbeds...do not go on this trek. This trek is about being in real cloud forest and having a real experience with real indigenous people! Wiwa Tours is the only tour that: - gives money to the indigenous people and to the WIWA FOUNDATION, which helps to protect the area. - you can go to the KOGI CAMP and meet their people (another tribe descended from the Tayronas). - you get to hear and see about the tradition of the COCA LEAF CHEWING AND BASKET MAKING. - you get to stay in 2 small WIWA ONLY CAMPS in bunkbeds and then hammocks (there were 12 beds in the time of writing which means the group was up to 12 and you really get to know everyone). Compared to up to 80 in one of the other camps - think about the germs, loos/showers!! The trek is mountainous and our group went at different speeds, but always waited at the fruit and drink stops. It was definitely hard and you needed a good baseline fitness and needed to enjoy trekking and be good at staying positive on the uphills (come rain or shine!) It was a bit dodgey in parts, i.e. no handrails and steps could be slippy when raining. We had a 50 something year old in our group, who coped absolutely fine, but I would not do this trek if you are not fit or have injuries (like knee injuries). You do not see loads of animals, but you make great friends and see amazing views and get up the final 1200 steps together!

wiwa tours reviews

We went with WIWA tours because they have the indigenous guides. The good thing is that in this way they explain about the rituals they have and you camp at other campsites than other groups so it feels more authentic. For the rest there are no advantages going with this company. We didn't get any explanation about the history of the region (what we could here from guides from other companies there is a lot of history to tell about the route and the historic site). The guide was extremely lazy. At the first day he did the complete hike on a motorcycle, the second day on a mule and the rest of the days he was somewhere behind so we did not see him until the lost city or in a base camp. Furthermore they mixed the 4 and 5 day group. Because the 5 day group was slower we weren't able to visit sites and see rituals they promised us we would see. overallI would say do the trek but take another company.

We went with them to the Lost city over New Years. The actual office is not very nice and the service was cold, definitely room to improve. However don't be put off by this. The actual tour with the indigenous guides offers clear extra content compared to the other companies with the same price - we gained a great deal of insight into the culture of the local indigenous people - something the not-indigenous guides cannot give you. Also a negative was that they were quite disorganized through the whole tour - we did the trek in 5 days instead of the usual 4 and the tour really only differed with the last 2 days, although the agencies web page gives a different itinerary that would mske more sense. We ended having 3 different guides in the end with loads of confusion - this was partly insightful as the guides cannot write or count to any great extent as they truly have lived in another world. However clearly this agency doesn't focus on 5 day treks so you might be better with a more organized agency for the 5 day trek. The indigenous aspect makes the agency highly recommended despite obvious problems and im forced to give 4 stars just because the other, worse companies have gotten such overvalued ratings (as is usual for trip advisor).
