LONDON (AP) — King Charles III hosted South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife at a glittering banquet at Buckingham Palace Tuesday, as Britain rolled out the red carpet for a formal state visit aimed at strengthening trade and defense ties between the two countries.
The U.K. government hopes the Korean leader’s three-day visit will help cement an “ Indo-Pacific tilt ” in its foreign and trade policy.
The king and Queen Camilla hosted Yoon and first lady Kim Keon Hee at a sumptuous white tie and tiara banquet at Buckingham Palace, where Charles paid tribute to South Korea’s political and economic advances and celebrated its culture. The monarch even singled out for praise the K-pop girl group Blackpink, whose members were among more than 170 guests in the grand ballroom.
“I applaud Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa and Rose, better known collectively as Blackpink, for their role in bringing the message of environmental sustainability to a global audience,” Charles said in his banquet speech. “I can only admire how they can prioritize these vital issues, as well as being global superstars.”
“Sadly, when I was in Seoul all those years ago, I am not sure I developed much of what might be called the Gangnam Style!” he joked, referring to the global hit song by Korean rapper Psy .
Camilla donned the late Queen Elizabeth II ‘s ruby and diamond Burmese tiara and a red gown for the occasion, while Kate, the Princess of Wales, chose a white gown paired with what’s known as the Strathmore Rose tiara. The headpiece had belonged to Elizabeth’s mother, known as the Queen Mother.
Earlier Tuesday Charles and Camilla welcomed Yoon and his wife at Horse Guards Parade, a military parade ground in central London. Heir to the throne Prince William and government ministers also attended the welcome ceremony, where the king and president inspected rows of soldiers from the Scots Guards in gray tunics and bearskin hats.
The visiting couple traveled by horse-drawn coach down an avenue lined with British and Korean flags to Buckingham Palace.
Yoon also is scheduled to hold talks Wednesday with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak focused on trade, technology and defense. A defense agreement will see the two countries’ navies work together to curb smuggling and to enforce U.N. sanctions imposed on North Korea to curb its nuclear weapons ambitions.
U.K. and Korean officials also will officially launch talks on an “upgraded” free trade agreement to replace their current deal, which largely replicates the arrangements the U.K. had before it left the European Union .
Britain has launched trade talks with several countries since leaving the EU in 2020, though it has finalized deals only with Australia and New Zealand. The U.K. also has joined the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership , or CPTPP, an Asia-Pacific trade bloc that includes Japan and 10 other nations.
Sunak and Yoon are expected to sign an agreement covering cooperation in defense and technology, including artificial intelligence. Britain hosted the first international AI Safety Summit this month, and South Korea intends to hold a follow-up event next year.
Britain also plans to invest in South Korean semiconductor manufacturing as part of international efforts to diversify the supply of the key computer components. Many of the advanced chips are produced in Taiwan , and the coronavirus pandemic and an increasingly assertive China have heightened concerns about future supply.
Sunak said agreements made during Yoon’s visit would “drive investment, boost trade and build a friendship that not only supports global stability, but protects our interests and lasts the test of time.”

US President Joe Biden could visit the UK to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement next year.
King Charles III would host Mr Biden around the time of a possible European trip for celebrations of the 1998 peace deal that helped end 30 years of violence in Northern Ireland .
Proud of his roots in Ireland and the US’ role in brokering the agreement, Mr Biden would likely be keen to visit the island of Ireland to mark the anniversary.
Diplomatic sources said it would be an ideal moment to invite Mr Biden for a state visit.
But there were concerns raised over the level of the celebrations, with the Northern Ireland Executive established by the agreement currently collapsed.
The UK government was optimistic, however, that power-sharing could be back up and running by the anniversary.

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss met the US president at a UN summit in New York on Wednesday, but she was not afforded the White House visit that Boris Johnson was treated to last year, with officials blaming the tight schedule of her trip.
Mr Biden did meet Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle after visiting Cornwall for the Group of Seven summit in June last year, but it did not have the full pomp and ceremony of a state visit.
His predecessor, Donald Trump , received a state visit in 2019.

State Visits
Dates: tbc Time: tbc Where: Horse Guards Parade
State visits are formal visits to the UK by Heads of State from overseas, with the aim of strengthening Britain's relationships with other countries.
There are usually two incoming State visits each year. Invitations are sent on the advice of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
The King acts as host to the visiting Head of State, who stays either at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle or, occasionally, The Palace of Holyrood house in Edinburgh.
Visits normally begin with a ceremonial welcome attended by The King and other senior members of the Royal Family. If the guest is staying at Buckingham Palace, the welcome takes place on Horse Guards Parade. After inspecting a guard of honour, the visiting President or Monarch then travels with The King in a Carriage Procession back to Buckingham Palace.
On the evening of the arrival day, the Head of State will attend a State Banquet in his or her honour.

Joe Biden accepts invite from the King for UK state visit after 'friendly conversation'
A White House spokeswoman said the pair have a "very good relationship" but did not have a specific timeline for when the visit would take place.

The King has invited Joe Biden to the UK for a state visit which the US president has accepted, the White House has announced.
The invitation came during a conversation between the pair on Tuesday, in which Mr Biden informed the King that US first lady Jill Biden would attend his coronation in May .
US presidents traditionally do not attend British monarchs' coronations.
"The president was appreciative of the offer by the King and looks forward to that state visit," White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.
She said that Mr Biden spoke on the phone with the King for around 25 to 30 minutes.
"He congratulated the King on his upcoming coronation, they have a very friendly conversation, he has a good relationship with the King," she said.
"He talked about how he enjoyed visiting the Queen back in 2021 when he and the first lady came to Windsor and he hoped to visit again soon.
"Actually, during the call, the King offered for him to come and do a state visit which the president accepted.
"So they will see each other again very soon... there are many things that they both care about, key shared values, key shared issues, that they want to continue to discuss like climate change."
Ms Jean-Pierre did not have a specific timeline for when the visit would take place, though she said it would be "in the near future".
Visit to Ireland
Meanwhile, Mr Biden will address the Irish parliament next Thursday as part of his much-anticipated visit to Ireland.
He will begin his trip in Belfast before travelling on to Dublin with visits to Co Louth and Co Mayo where his ancestors are from.
He is set to address TDs, senators and MEPs in the Dail chamber as part of his visit to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar told the media that Mr Biden's visit offered an opportunity to advance issues discussed during the Washington DC visit two weeks prior.
"The number one objective of President Biden's visit to Ireland is to welcome a son of Ireland home, to welcome home a great Irish American president and to cement and strengthen the really good relationship that we have at the moment with the US," he said.

"I don't think relations have ever been stronger or closer between Ireland and the US, and we want to cement that and use the opportunity of the meetings we're going to have."
The US leader will also deliver a public address outside St Muredach's Cathedral in Ballina, Co Mayo, next Friday evening.

"Given the deep, historic ties between Ireland and the United States of America, both the Ceann Comhairle and the Cathaoirleach are very much looking forward to welcoming the president to Leinster House," a statement said on Wednesday.
Mr Biden will become the fourth US president to address the Oireachtas, following John F Kennedy's address in June 1963, Ronald Reagan's in June 1984 and Bill Clinton's in December 1995.

Biden could make state visit in 2023 as UK government hopes to solve NI protocol
- Wednesday 21 September 2022 at 10:05pm

A senior British official has suggested that 2023 could be a good year for president Joe Biden to make a state visit to the UK - in comments that suggest the government hopes to solve the disagreement over the Northern Ireland protocol within six months.
They said: “There’s nothing planned at the moment but if you look at the calendar you will conclude that next year might be an obvious reason to visit Europe.”
Next April marks the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement - which was discussed by the president and Liz Truss today at their first bilateral meeting since she became prime minister.
Ahead of a 75 minute meeting, the president made clear that he wanted to discuss Russia and Ukraine, Iran, energy security, but also the tensions between the UK and the EU over the Northern Ireland protocol.
Critics say that Truss’s threat to unilaterally rewrite the protocol is causing tension with our closest ally, and is one of the reasons that Liz Truss was forced to admit that there is no hope of talks about a US-UK trade deal in the short to medium term.
But officials said that her motivation in Northern Ireland is not to damage the GFA but to try to protect it, and after the bilateral a Downing spokesperson said: “The prime minister and president Biden both agreed that the priority must be protecting the Belfast Agreeement and preserving the gains of peace in Northern Ireland.”
Earlier on the trip to New York for the UN general assembly, Truss told reporters that her preference was for a negotiated deal on the protocol - and not to push through legislation that would overwrite it - but also added that she would not “allow the situation to drift”.
The diplomatic source also claimed that Tony Blair had been a “helpful” voice in trying to diffuse tensions over the issue. They said he had “been explaining to the Europeans and the Americans that the British government have a real point” on some aspects of the NI protocol and that it isn’t about the GFA but about communities.
Sources close to Blair would not comment on that characterisation. They said he had made his position clear and that he believed the solution to this was not a question of technical work but political will.
Inside President Biden’s ‘mini state visit’ to the UK

US President Joe Biden and Britain's King Charles III inspect a guard of honour
President Biden has had a bumper day, meeting both Prime Minister Rishi Sunak this morning and King Charles III this afternoon on a ‘mini-state visit’ to the UK. Biden, who recently welcomed Sunak on a successful visit to Washington DC but failed to attend the coronation, touched down in London Stansted last night, and is set to leave the UK on 11 July as part of a longer European visit.
The couple tied the knot on Saturday in a ceremony attended by politicians, journalists, well-wishers – and a not-so-well-wisher with an orange confetti cannon
This afternoon, Biden arrived at Windsor Castle, where he was greeted by the King and received a royal salute. He listened to the US national anthem performed by the Welsh Guards, after which he was driven into the castle and inspected troops. The King and President subsequently entered the castle for tea in the Oak Room, His Majesty’s private sitting room, for an exchange of gifts. Afterwards, His Majesty invited the President to view an exhibition in the White Drawing Room of items from the Royal Collection relating to the United States of America.

The US president then joined participants of the Climate Finance Mobilisation Forum, which took place earlier in the day. The King and President were briefed on the conclusions of the discussions. The Forum had brought together finance and philanthropic leaders from the United Kingdom and the United States of America to strengthen their commitments to climate action within emerging markets and developing economies.

Earlier in the day, Biden met Rishi Sunak at 10 Downing Street in his first visit to the prime ministerial abode as president. The two were photographed outside the famous black door, before enjoying tea outside in the garden at No 10. As the two sat down to talk, Biden said he ‘couldn’t be meeting with a closer friend and greater ally’ despite reported disagreements including over Washington’s plans to arm Kyiv with cluster bombs. The US President called his relationship with the UK ‘rock solid’.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the US President Joe Biden arrive for an official meeting at the Downing Street in London
‘President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. met today with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of the United Kingdom in London,’ a press release published by the White House said. ‘The leaders reviewed preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit in Vilnius. They reaffirmed their steadfast support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression. The leaders discussed the Atlantic Declaration on economic partnership they launched in June, including next steps to drive toward key outcomes in the months ahead. They also reviewed developments in Northern Ireland and efforts to ensure continued progress there.’

Although Biden’s arrival has been touted as a ‘mini state visit’, the trip lacks the pomp and ceremony afforded to a formal state visit (like the one undertaken by the South African president last year), including a ceremonial welcome and a state banquet.

Biden travelled to the UK in the early days of King Charles’s reign to attend the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. However, he did not attend the coronation in May . Instead, First Lady Dr Jill Biden and their granddaughter attended the service in his place. During the visit, Dr Biden spent time with Akshata Murty at Downing Street.

Jessica Howard-Johnston reports from the ground of Rishi Sunak’s first visit to Washington DC as Prime Minister
The ‘mini state visit’ comes just weeks after Rishi Sunak visited the USA for talks with Joe Biden in Washington DC. The high esteem in which he was held was reflected in the White House’s decision to extend an invitation for him to stay in Blair House, informally known as ‘The President’s Guest House’ – an honour that is not bestowed on every visiting dignitary. During the visit, both leaders discussed Ukraine, a post-Brexit economy and the pros and cons of Artificial Intelligence. The two leaders also announced a new partnership, the ‘Atlantic declaration’, to bolster economic security.
Biden, who is of Irish heritage, also visited Belfast in April to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, when he also fit in a brief meeting with Mr Sunak.

Announcement of the UK State Visit by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa
The British High Commission in Pretoria welcomes the news that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will pay a State Visit to the UK.
The British High Commission in Pretoria has welcomed the news that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will pay a State Visit to the United Kingdom to meet The King and The Queen Consort.
This is the first invitation of a State Visit made by His Majesty King Charles III.
British High Commissioner to South Africa, Antony Phillipson said:
I am delighted that President Cyril Ramaphosa, accompanied by Dr Tshepo Motsepe, has accepted an invitation from His Majesty King Charles III to pay a State Visit to the United Kingdom from Tuesday, 22 November to Thursday, 24 November 2022. The King and The Queen Consort will host the State Visit at Buckingham Palace. This will be the first State Visit hosted by His Majesty. It reflects the importance of the relationship between South Africa and the United Kingdom. The visit will offer a chance to celebrate our modern-day partnerships delivering prosperity and security for both countries, as well as to set out how we can work together bilaterally and globally to strengthen those links for the future.
Over the next few weeks the British High Commission will work closely with the Presidency, the Department for International Relations and Cooperation, and the South African government to finalise the details of the President’s State Visit.
His Majesty The King has visited South Africa on a number of occasions. His Majesty’s first visit was to Pretoria, Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town from 31 October to 5 November 1997. The King and The Queen Consort also visited Pretoria and Johannesburg from 2 to 6 November 2011. The King and Queen Consort also attended the funeral of President Nelson Mandela on 15 December 2013.
Her Late Majesty The Queen invited President Nelson Mandela to pay a State Visit to the UK in July 1996. She also invited President Thabo Mbeki to pay a State Visit to the UK in June 2001, and President Jacob Zuma to pay a State Visit to the UK in March 2010.
The press release from Buckingham Palace announcing the State Visit can be found here: Announcement of the State Visit by the President of South Africa ( PDF , 156 KB , 2 pages ) .
Further details of the State Visit programme will be announced in due course.

Donald Trump Is Banned from 37 Countries as Convicted Felon, Including Major Allies Like Canada and U.K.
If elected president again, Trump would need special permission to enter several key countries for maintaining foreign relations
Donald Trump may face travel restrictions with his newfound felon status , potentially complicating his presidency if he were to win another term in office.
Thirty-eight nations, counting the United States, bar felons from entry, according to World Population Review . Those bans stand regardless of whether someone is allowed to retain their passport after conviction.
Countries that turn felons away include several of the United States' strongest allies, like the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada — the final of which will host the G7 summit of world leaders in 2025. The list also includes a number of nations at the center of pressing foreign policy issues, such as China, Israel and Mexico.

International governments can, and in some cases would, choose to make an exception for Trump if he requested special permission as president to make a visit.
George W. Bush , who was arrested for drunk driving in the 1970s, ran into issues with Canadian travel restrictions during his presidency while planning an official state visit and, after applying for a special waiver, he was ultimately allowed to enter.

In Bush's case, which still proved tedious, the circumstances were a bit different: the crime happened decades earlier, was only categorized as a misdemeanor and was never tried in a court of law (Bush admitted to driving under the influence upon arrest and got off with a fine and temporary license suspension). It's hard to say whether Trump's new 34 felony convictions would be dealt with in a similar manner.
Countries That Deny Entry to Felons
- Dominican Republic
- New Zealand
- Philippines
- South Africa
- South Korea
- United Arab Emirates
- United Kingdom
- United States
If Trump were elected to another term in the White House and chose to apply for special travel waivers, the irony would not go unnoticed.
The former president has often characterized foreigners as "criminals," and has campaigned on a promise to tighten U.S. travel restrictions, which would include shutting down the border and instating travel bans on people of certain nationalities and ideologies.
