Recent tour reviews

Martha Argerich is music, everything she plays is full of sense .

For me, she is the best pianist ever, a live legend.

With Barenboim they do a great team. I really had a very good experience listening to both of them.

Un concert inoubliable ! Une salle de concert superve. Deux pianistes de génie interprétant à lerveille des oeuvres difficiles. Et le charisme de Martha Argerich... C'était pour moi le concert à ne pas rater !

Review: martha argerich on rare u.s. tour, with italy’s santa cecilia orchestra.

A Decrease font size. A Reset font size. A Increase font size.

“There is a sound, a special variety of collective whooping, that rises up from a large audience at the sight of an artist it admires deeply in its bones,” writes Jeremy Eichler in Wednesday’s (10/25) Boston Globe . “On Sunday night, as the 76-year-old Argentine pianist Martha Argerich took the stage of Boston’s Symphony Hall after an absence of nearly three decades, the packed audience, as if by pre-arrangement, knew what to do. It conferred that sound…. Argerich … came to Boston with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia of Rome and its music director, Antonio Pappano…. She showed up with Prokofiev’s youthfully clamorous and knuckle-busting Third Piano Concerto…. Her technique remains an astonishing marvel of penetration and economy…. The evening … closed with rousing accounts of two works by Respighi: ‘Fountains of Rome’ and ‘The Pines of Rome.’ … This was the orchestra that gave the world premieres of both Respighi works, and I can’t recall ever hearing them played more idiomatically…. Sibelius’s ‘Valse Triste’ followed as an encore, and it contained one of loveliest pianissimos heard this season.” Argerich will be honored at the Kennedy Center Honors on December 4, to be televised on CBS later that month.

Martha Argerich

The 2016 Kennedy Center Honors

Martha Argerich was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Considered a child prodigy, she began her first piano lessons at the age of five with Vincenzo Scaramuzza. In 1955, she moved to Europe and continued her studies in London, Vienna, and Switzerland. In 1957, she won the Bolzano and Geneva Piano Competitions, and in 1965 the Warsaw International Chopin Competition.

She made her first commercial recording in 1960 followed by her U.S. debut in 1965 in the Lincoln Center's Great performers series. Since then, she has been considered one of the most prominent pianists in the world both in popularity and ability. She rose to fame with her interpretations of virtuoso piano literature of the 19th and 20th centuries. Her large repertoire includes Bach, Bartok, Beethoven, and Messiaen, as well as Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Debussy, Ravel, Franck, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, and Tchaikovsky. Though she is permanently invited by the most prestigious orchestras, conductors, and music festivals in Europe, Japan, and America, chamber music currently represents a significant part of her musical life.

Her collaborations with other artists are legendary as is her support for young artists. She has organized international competitions where she also sometimes serves as juror, hosts an annual festival, performs special concerts, and teaches masterclasses herself along with her frequent collaborators. She has recorded for EMI, Sony, Philips, Teldec, and DGG, and performed for worldwide broadcasts, receiving numerous international distinctions. Among her numerous accolades, she been the recipient of three Grammy Awards, continuing to elevate the classical music genre in quality and appeal to a global audience.

»Rendezvous« between Kampnagel, Elbphilharmonie, and Gruenspan

Symphoniker Hamburg has had the honor of presenting the Martha Argerich Festival since 2018. Between 20 and 30 June this year, the festival’s sixth season will take place in a slightly different form: because of extensive renovation activities in the Laeiszhalle, the festival will undertake a musical journey to a wide variety of venues throughout Hamburg. Martha Argerich is looking forward to this journey of discovery as a fresh new interpretation of her vision of a festival where new and unconventional ideas can be explored – with new locations and innovative formats that erase the boundaries between cultures and genres.

With this in mind, she will welcome artists such as Janine Jansen, Gil Shaham, Mischa Maisky, Edgar Moreau, Sergei Nakariakov, Stephen Kovacevich, Lilya Zilberstein, Sergio Tiempo, Samuel Weiss, Hans-Jürgen Schatz, Pauline Rénevier, and Alexander Scheer, as well as family members and many other friends.

This year’s Martha Argerich Festival will feature concerts, discussions, readings, and crossover programs in sometimes surprising locations. In addition to the Elbphilharmonie , audiences will be invited to the Kunsthalle , the Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte , and the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe . The Deutsches SchauSpielHaus , the Hochschule für Musik und Theater , and the Hochschule für bildende Künste will be filled with the music and spirit of the festival, as will Gruenspan , the Mojo Club , and Kampnagel .

“A Force of Nature Called
Martha Argerich”

HAMBURGER ABENDBLATT

Don’t miss out when in the Deutsches SchauSpielHaus Shakespeare’s sonnets are joined by classical piano music and jazz in a wild dialogue about love, when Martha Argerich and concert manager Annabelle Weidenfeld discuss »The Music World Then and Now« in the Kunsthalle, when Brahms and Debussy encounter the virtuoso folklore-classical fusion of Geza & the 5 DeVils in the Mojo Club, or when Janine Jansen, Mischa Maisky, and Martha Argerich perform chamber music on the same stage as a fiery flamenco program at Gruenspan. Or maybe you’d like to experience a recital in the Hochschule für bildende Künste with the legendary founder of the festival accompanying Robert Schumann’s »Dichterliebe« or hear her – along with Gil Shaham, Edgar Moreau, and the Symphoniker Hamburg under the direction of Principal Conductor Sylvain Cambreling – perform Beethoven’s »Triple Concerto« in the Großer Saal of the Elbphilharmonie?

“Martha Argerich Festival: Cheers Like at a Pop Concert”

The festival program for 2024 offers an unconventional, rich, free-spirited, humorous, light-hearted, and inspiring mix of concerts, literary readings, solo performances, fascinating panel discussions, flamenco, jazz, theater evenings, chamber music, and “family affairs” (such as »Carnival of the Animals« with a new text written especially for the occasion). The festival provides opportunities for new types of artistic encounters for audiences and performers alike, encounters that are far too seldom in the day-to-day routine of concert and theater life. With her unique mix of self-assurance and good humor, Martha Argerich inspires and empowers us to discover new perspectives and insights – also concerning ourselves.

“Exuberant and adoring jubilation – when has a Hamburg audience ever been this enthusiastic?”

martha argerich tour usa

Martha Argerich can hardly wait: »I’m really looking forward to meeting my Hamburg audience again and hope they will share my excitement on this festive journey through the city. The combination of old friendships and new discoveries promises to create lively, unusual, and truly artistic experiences that break through the borders of conventional concert tour routine. This is something quite rare and very important to me!«

“One Big Family: Martha Argerich triumphs with her new festival”

Martha Argerich, 83 today, plays Prokofiev in Hiroshima

norman lebrecht

June 05, 2024

Fresh up on Youtube, the third concerto is one of Martha’s lifelong warhorses.

' src=

She’s doing what she loves and it shows!

' src=

Happy birthday to a great pianist

' src=

Be amazed, indeed. If I could play 1/10th as well as she is at her age, I’d die happy.

' src=

1/1000 as well for me!

' src=

Is this Martha’s birthday or ours ? =)))

' src=

I loved it. She makes the lyrical section in the last movement so gorgeous, softer than most and arrestingly beautiful. Like playing a game, bringing out the charm, the whimsy, character and total joy of playing this music as if she herself composed it at the piano on the spot. 83. OMG. Inspires us to keep going. Fabulous conductor and orchestra!

' src=

Yes, I was hoping the conductor would be named. He is a pleasure to watch, no theatrics and not trying to steal the limelight.

' src=

It was Christian Arming.

' src=

Christian Arming

' src=

Feliz cumpleaños, Martita-querida!

' src=

Good job, Martha. Just remember, thou shalt not ever say in public who nuked the city.

' src=

And just ignore Pearl Harbor

' src=

83?! Must be base 5.

In retrospect, I have committed a faux pas. In base 5 there is no 8. But you get the idea.

Christian Arming conducts

' src=

The orchestra is good but a bit on the safe side … What an artist she is, the Schumann encore is so full of life and spirit. Thanks Martha. Just wish she had played Chopin Studies or Schumann 1st sonata…

Happy Birthday to one of the greatest pianists of all time! It is astounding that she is still performing at 83. Keep it going, Martha, I still hope to see you perform one day!
