Our Mission

To build, connect, and support resilient communities engaged in on-ground conservation, research or education activities aimed at enhancing protected areas across Queensland.

 Who we are

Founded in 2022, Friends of Parks Queensland Incorporated is an ACNC-registered charity and umbrella organisation for Friends of Parks groups across the state. Our duty is to help Friends of Parks groups achieve their conservation goals and amplify the positive impact existing groups are having on the environment, while supporting new groups to form. We operate in partnership with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service & Partnerships.

Friends of Parks Queensland provides tailored support to our member groups based on their needs and the wishes of the land managers and Traditional Owners.

General Advice & Support

We support our members in a range of ways. Support may include admin assistance, site-specific plans from an ecologist, or general advice & strategy.

Grant Writing Assistance

We know funding is tight. We actively seek funding opportunities for our members and assist with grant applications and project planning.

A well-connected network is a powerful network. We can facilitate connections to not-for-profit, education, industry, and land managers as appropriate.

Sponsorship

We act as a sponsor for member groups seeking funding through government or non-government grant programs.

Volunteer Recruitment

Need extra on-ground volunteers, or help with social media? We connect our members with suitable volunteers to bring maximum benefits.

We do not charge a membership fee or admin fee on grant projects, meaning more funding goes towards conservation.

Seeing the surge in “Friends of Parks” groups during the pandemic, Jess saw the need for an organisation to support the amazing volunteers working in our natural areas with limited budgets and support. Jess is passionate about connecting communities with the environment and sciences, and has received numerous awards within the local Gold Coast community for her contributions to Friends of Nerang National Park. Although she doesn’t like to admit having favourites, she has a definite soft spot for greater gliders and the humble brown bandicoot. Paul Revie has always had a passion for the environment, with a focus on citizen science, threatened species research and conservation management. He is the founder of the Quoll Society of Australia and a project officer at the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland, working primarily with threatened mammals. After spending years as a nature tour guide on Cape York, Paul emerged from the wilderness to finish university, and has since had roles as a bush regenerator, senior consultant, and even as a penguin keeper at Sea World. Paul is currently completing his Master’s thesis on the population ecology of spotted-tailed quolls.

Ready to strap on your snorkel and splash into a new adventure as a Marine Conservation volunteer in Australia? International Volunteer HQ’s Marine Conservation project at the spectacular Great Barrier Reef gives volunteers the opportunity to help address the effects of development and climate change on the world’s largest coral reef system. Volunteers will gain experience in reef monitoring, marine debris data collection and sea turtle conservation.

What to expect and how you'll make an impact

The wondrous Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia has been under threat from the effects of development, deforestation, and climate change for decades, but progress has been made to help it recover. These efforts continue with a number of different groups working towards keeping the reef healthy and strong for years to come.

With IVHQ’s Marine Conservation project you’ll get trained to be able to volunteer with oceanographic organisations to gather data and support the protection of the Great Barrier Reef. These initiatives include:

  • Reef Monitoring: You’ll be snorkeling to observe and collect data on the species living around the Great Barrier Reef. A full-length lycra suit will be supplied, but you’ll need to bring your own snorkel and waterproof watch.
  • Marine Debris Collection and Research: Marine debris represents a significant threat to the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem and is having a devastating impact on marine life. You’ll be assisting with marine debris data collection and mapping which can then be categorised and shared with conservationists to assist with their research.
  • Sea Turtle Conservation (for volunteers staying 2 weeks or more): Learn to identify turtle species, catalogue distinguishing features and track individual animals and their behaviour. A unique experience swimming with wild and free turtles.

IVHQ Marine Conservation project volunteers in Australia

What recent volunteers said about their IVHQ experience

I feel grateful and satisfied about what I did and learned everyday. I learnt a lot about the marine life, aboriginal culture and it made me grow as a person.

Everyone I met and everything I was able to do to support the marine conservation efforts of the Great Barrier Reef was incredible. I absolutely love the team! I feel so motivated to keep supporting the cause and keeping the reef as safe as possible.

Through my experience I feel I gained more knowledge about the underlying issue of climate change and how it not only effects the earth but the indigenous people that rely off it. I gained many amazing memories and friendships, that I couldn’t be more grateful for!

Gained more knowledge about myself, the indigenous people and way of life in Australia. Learnt about corals and met some cool people!

Volunteering through IVHQ, and with the local Australia team was the best decision I have made. This experience challenged me and pushed me out of my comfort zone, which allowed me to grow so much as a person and gain so many skills! Volunteering is such a great way to travel and save money, whilst also being able to learn from locals about the culture and environment you are in. IVHQ has high standards regarding the ethicality of projects and meets UN goals which was something I really looked for to start off my volunteering journey.

The checklist provided on my IVHQ account provided structure and clear direction, which helped me prepare for the trip. The local team was absolutely fantastic. They were caring, helpful, and extremely knowledgeable; I always felt safe and welcome.

Expanding my worldview and giving me the opportunity to see firsthand and to understand how I can positively or negatively influence the world around me in various ways, to varying degrees, had the biggest impact on me. Volunteering abroad will push you out of your comfort zone, but in doing so it will show you how magnificently expansive the world is beyond that bubble.

Volunteer Abroad in Australia with IVHQ

Set at the Great Barrier Reef, volunteers at IVHQ’s Marine Conservation project will have the opportunity to get to know the remarkable coral reef well. You’ll be based in the city of Cairns in Far North Queensland and take a 45-minute ferry to Green Island and Fitzroy Island each day to volunteer. Your ferry tickets are included in your Program Fee.

Cairns itself is a modern city set in the tropical north of Australia. It’s one of the country’s top tourism destinations thanks to the reef and other outstanding natural features. It’s also an excellent place to learn about the unique cultures and environments in the surrounding area.

Arrival and orientation

The Australia volunteer program orientation begins on the first Monday of every month and volunteers need to arrive in Cairns on the day before orientation.

After you have registered for the program, please book your flights to arrive at the Cairns International Airport (CNS). You can catch an Uber from the airport to the volunteer accommodation for approximately AU$15 .

If you are travelling in Australia prior to your volunteer program, you will need to arrange your own transport to the accommodation in Cairns the day before your program orientation.

Orientation is hosted by the team in Cairns. It begins the morning of your chosen start date and lasts for a full day, with a break in the middle for lunch and a walking tour. The orientation covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program in Australia – an introduction to Australia, culture and customs, rules and expectations, safety, travel opportunities, an introduction to your project and placement and a tour of the local area. The orientation will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socialising.

Volunteer schedule example

Weekdays: Please note that this schedule will vary depending on the volunteer work requirements. There will be some days where you will have the opportunity to stay on the island until 4:00 PM to relax and sightsee.

An example schedule is as follows:

Weekends: With your weekends free you’ll be able to explore the breathtaking scenery, cultural diversity, unique wildlife, adventure sports and relaxed lifestyle that Australia is famous for.

Discover Cairns’ beaches, nearby islands, the charming coastal town of Port Douglas and the Daintree Rainforest - Australia’s largest tropical rainforest. Marine lovers have an extensive selection of coastline and beaches to enjoy and the opportunity to dive, surf, kayak, swim and snorkel in some of the most beautiful spots in the world. Adrenaline junkies can enjoy bungee jumping, gorge swinging, white water rafting, parasailing and mountain biking.

Those who prefer city scenes have easy flight access to Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne so you can explore popular Aussie attractions including Bondi Beach in Sydney, Great Ocean Road, Noosa or the Gold Coast.

Accommodation and WiFi

Volunteers will stay in a dormitory-style hostel in central Cairns, close to cafes, restaurants, a shopping mall, the esplanade and tourism operators. The hostel is about a 20-minute walk from the Port of Cairns where you will catch your ferry to and from the islands each day.

You’ll be sharing a bedroom with 1-8 others of the same gender. There is air-conditioning in each room but it must be turned off when the room is empty. The bathrooms are communal but separated by gender and are equipped with toilets and hot showers.

Bedding is provided, but you’ll need to bring your own towels and toiletries. Lockers are available in each bedroom if you bring your own padlock. There are staff who clean the accommodation throughout the week, including your sheets, however, volunteers are required to keep their rooms tidy.

WiFi is available within the hostel at all times, at no extra cost. There are also multiple shared communal spaces such as a kitchen, outdoor dining area, lounge and pool.

Accommodation upgrades to private rooms or smaller rooms are available at an additional cost, as well as extra nights of accommodation for before or after your program. It is best to arrange accommodation upgrades or extensions with the local team at least 3 weeks prior to your program start date. Please note that these upgrades are subject to availability.

Please note that any independent 17 year old’s are required to obtain a private room upgrade, as per accommodation rules. This is an additional cost and will be confirmed via the local team once you have registered onto the program.

A variety of lunches are provided on week (work) days such as: sandwiches, Vietnamese paper rolls, burgers. The menu will depend on the location of the day’s activities.

Tap water in Australia is safe to drink in most areas and we strongly recommend bringing a reusable water bottle with you as single-use plastic is strongly discouraged on this program. We also recommend bringing a reusable cutlery set, coffee cup and straw as you will be eating lunch on the island most days.

You will need to purchase your own lunch on the weekends and you can expect to budget $10 - $15 for each lunch. Volunteers are also responsible for purchasing their own breakfast and dinners, either from one of the nearby eateries or by purchasing groceries to prepare in the hostel’s communal kitchen.

Supermarkets are a short walk from the volunteer hostel, along with a fruit and vegetable market. A night market operates every night where you can buy cheap dinners. There is also an extensive food court in the mall opposite the hostel and a wide range of restaurants in the surrounding streets.

Voluntourism Opportunities Abroad

Do you dream of backpacking through some of the most remote places abroad but somehow feel as if it’s not enough? Do you want to do more than that? Do you want to connect to the communities and help? If you are interested in volunteering abroad and you have already done some research on the topic, you might have come across the term “Voluntourism”. It simply describes “tourism in which travelers do voluntary work to help communities or the environment in the places they are visiting”, but in the past years, there has been a lot of discussion about the pros and cons of voluntourism abroad.

At Volunteer World, we believe that if done right, volunteering tourism opportunities overseas can benefit both the volunteers and the projects they visit and work for. As this is an important and very sensitive topic, we want to show you what’s important when it comes to ethical voluntourism and how we ensure that the volunteer abroad programs on our website match the criteria and that there are no issues with volunteering. If you are interested in combining your travels with volunteer work abroad, just continue reading

What is the difference between Volunteering and Voluntourism?

The emphasis of most of our projects is on volunteering and dedicating time to a volunteer abroad project and its progress. We cater to a very wide audience and also offer voluntourism packages which we believe are sustainable. Although the latter has been subject to controversy, we guarantee that all programs offered through our website meet strict requirements. It still remains important for volunteers to do their due diligence and research the project they are interested in. To give you a better understanding of volunteerism and voluntourism, take a look at the descriptions below:

Let’s start by taking a closer look at what we understand under volunteerism:

  • It’s about helping out a certain project usually for a longer period of time.
  • Volunteers offer a certain type of expertise which the project is lacking.
  • There are opportunities to explore the surroundings and do some sightseeing but it’s not the main aim of the time spent there.
  • Projects impact the local community and environment and are making a difference in the field they are focused on: childcare, animals, community development projects, health, education
  • Projects are usually run by non-profit organizations that ensure funds go toward the community or are reinvested in the organization.

With voluntourism or volunteering tourism, things are slightly different.

  • First of all, the emphasis is on the experience of the participant volunteer tourist.
  • The goal is for the participant to travel and see as much as possible of a certain area while spending a short period of time contributing to a certain cause.
  • Voluntourism packages are sometimes offered by for-profit organizations. This may result in funds going toward the tourism industry rather than the local community although this isn’t always the case. (Volunteers need to inform themselves about this before signing up).
  • Anyone can join a project and no expertise is required.

This may help you decide what type of project and types of voluntourism you would like to participate in. There is no right or wrong when it comes to this. Both options have their place when done right.

The Pros and Cons of Voluntourism

Voluntourism has gotten a bad reputation over the past few years with articles appearing claiming more harm than good is being done. Especially when it comes to working with children. Let’s not forget that the intention of participants is to help and is intrinsically good. Some volunteers don’t have the time to contribute for several months but are looking for an opportunity to help where they can.

Although there seems to be an increased desire to help and contribute by those more fortunate, it’s not easy for organizations to create opportunities to fulfill this need of helping out and linking it to work that would make a meaningful and sustainable difference.

Here are a few of the pros and cons that you need to take into account when opting for a program:

  • Allows you to travel and discover a part of the world you have wanted to explore.
  • You get the chance to connect with the local community.
  • Participants will see a different side of their travel destination than if they would travel as a tourist.
  • It is a great opportunity for cultural interchange.
  • You will travel in a group and meet other like-minded individuals.
  • Given you are participating in an ethical project, funds and efforts will be invested in the community.
  • The time spent on the program is limited which may not lead to significant changes.
  • It is possible that the funds go toward the tourism industry instead of the community when you choose the wrong organization. It’s important to do your due diligence on this.
  • When working with children, it can be hard on them when volunteering for only short periods. Exposing vulnerable children to inexperienced volunteers can have a negative impact.

Why opt for Voluntourism?

As with all good things, there’s always going to be a downside when projects are not executed properly. Voluntourism has taken a few blows the past few years, with people saying there have been issues with volunteering tourism. It has endured claims that it is harming the community and is mainly focused on the participants.

First of all, let’s keep in mind there will always be naysayers that will point out that voluntary work in developing countries is condescending and not solving problems in a sustainable manner. Although there may be some truth in these acclamations, keep in mind that all of this rises and falls with the execution of the projects.

Imagine the following scenario : you have decided to tour around India for 3 weeks and will contribute to the community by teaching at schools and building houses for a couple of days during your stay.

Will you be making a difference?

It’s fair to state that you won’t be making as big of a difference when you choose to volunteer for short stints as opposed to long periods of time . Packages offered by a reputable international organization will make sure that money paid by voluntourists (volunteer tourists) will be contributed to local communities and that work done is useful to the community. (Beware of organizations that don’t have the best interest of the community at heart). The most important thing that will happen during a program is cultural interchange and social contact. Everyone will agree that social interaction is crucial in a happy life and is something everyone benefits from.

Volunteer tourists have the best intentions and are looking for ways to contribute despite time constraints. For volunteer tourists, it’s important to keep in mind that volunteer tourism comes in many shapes and forms so it’s their responsibility to look for projects they fully support.

Is volunteering in developing countries condescending?

There are claims that if you volunteer overseas that you’re portraying a message that these communities are unable to solve problems on their own. This mainly refers to programs that aren’t addressing the root problem and are exploiting both the community as the volunteers for personal gains. The goal of voluntourism projects should always be to empower local communities and give them the support they need to take their future into their own hands . Claiming that there’s no need for any help in developing countries would also be incorrect. Again, it is a matter of joining a reputable organization that understands the needs of the community and is dedicated to helping the community progress.

Although the time may be short, that doesn’t mean the interaction is meaningless. As a voluntourist overseas, you will gain a deeper understanding of what is going on in the part of the world you are visiting . You will carry this awareness with you and share it with others. Awareness moves people to behave differently and make different choices. Even if voluntourism doesn’t have a direct impact, it will have an impact nonetheless perhaps further down the road. Whether it is a unique connection you have with one of the locals, a message that you were able to bring across during an English class or a mind-shift you made after the experience which changes the way you stand in life.

What kind of Voluntourism projects are there?

The point of voluntourism is that you get to see as much of a country as possible while you volunteer for a certain cause during your trip. There are so many possibilities available that it will come down to where you want to go and what skills you have to offer Here are some possibilities that are available:

  • Work at an animal conservation center or sanctuary
  • Cultural immersion programs
  • Community support
  • Youth development
  • Environmental conservation

There are so many types of voluntourism, it’s a matter of preference and skills that will determine where you will end up for your adventure. Volunteering tourism is on the uprise which means more and more projects are appearing in the social landscape. Volunteer tourists will have increasingly more options but will face the challenge of selecting meaningful and sustainable projects.

How to choose the right Voluntourism program?

The most important aspect of choosing a great program is that you do enough research on the different volunteer and travel organizations and try to answer the following questions:

  • What does the organization stand for?
  • What is their objective and how are they trying to achieve it?
  • How are the funds they receive spent?
  • How do you think you will contribute?
  • What do you think the effect will be of your voluntourism work?

Take into account possible negative effects. Read up on the organization, read reviews and ask previous volunteers about their participation. There are some great agencies and non-profit organizations that are doing very responsible and good work.

Be careful when you choose to volunteer with children. Do your due diligence prior to signing up . There are organizations out there that are doing more harm than good. It’s important to take into account that we have attempted to screen these organizations but you make the final call. Choose wisely and you will be in for an incredible experience while supporting a meaningful cause.

Best places for Voluntourism

Voluntourists that have Africa or Asia on their list, will find several opportunities to volunteer and travel on the website. Peru , Brazil , and Guatemala are Latin American destinations that are available to those who are passionate about this warm culture. Those who want to get off the beaten track, can opt for a program with the Bedouins in the desert or head up to Finland to discover the Nordic wilderness. There are plenty of opportunities to discover some of the greatest parts of the world while you leave an impression on the local community and help where you can. Volunteer tourists will find several types of voluntourism which will make their hearts beat faster.

Top 5 benefits of Voluntourism

Once you’ve done that, let’s take a look at the first 3 steps which will send you on your way to do voluntourism abroad:

  • Check whether there’s a match between you and the voluntourism project by looking at their requirements.
  • Take a look at the location of the project and decide whether it would be a location you are excited about.
  • Get in touch with the organization and see whether your expectations and your schedule match up.

Once this is sorted. Let’s take a look at the practical steps:

Insurance (Health & travel)

National Sport Volunteering Passport Initiative

Making volunteering more accessible

Posted on 10.06.2024

As part an ongoing commitment to enhancing the sports volunteering landscape in Australia, the Australian Sports Commission is excited to invite volunteers, sport organisations and volunteer coordinators to participate in a concept testing session for the new National Sport Volunteering Passport initiative. This project is being developed to make volunteering more accessible and efficient for individuals and sporting organisations alike.

The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) are seeking all kinds of volunteers to get involved with testing an idea around a ‘volunteer passport’. It will take place online for around 1 hour.

What is meant by volunteering? To some people it might be called helping out, lending a hand, duty, being hospitable or charitable. Volunteering is defined as ‘time willingly given for the common good and without financial gain.’

Why participate? This is a chance to influence how volunteering is facilitated nationwide, ensuring that the system works better for everyone involved.

The ASC would love to hear from you by completing this online form:

Thank you for helping shape the future of sport volunteering in Australia.

FairPlay for all Queensland kids

Sport and Recreation’s popular FairPlay program will open to all Queensland children aged from 5 to 17 years from 1 July 2024, with the voucher value increasing per child to $200 to offset the rising cost of junior sport for families.

Announced as part of the Queensland Budget for the 2024-2025 financial year, the injection of an additional $33.5 million has expanded the FairPlay program to $40 million, addressing cost-of-living pressures faced by families as they juggle the household budget with the rising prices of registering their children for organised sport and recreation activities. Through the Queensland Budget, the value of vouchers will increase from up to $150 to up to $200 for every voucher, to help reduce the cost of sports memberships, registration and participation fees for families. The number of vouchers for the program has also increased from up to 50,000 to up to 200,000. The additional 150,000 vouchers will be available for Queensland children and young people aged between 5 and 17 years to participate in sport and active recreation. Importantly, 50,000 vouchers remain guaranteed to those under the current eligibility criteria of children and young people aged between 5 and 17 who hold, or whose parent, carer or guardian holds a valid Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card with the child’s name on it. Vouchers will need to be redeemed by June 2025, enabling summer and winter sports and activities to be accessed. FairPlay ensures more Queensland children have access to sports and active recreation activities such as rugby league, AFL, netball, BMX, table tennis, basketball, orienteering and abseiling.

Since the program began in 2019, over $30 million has been redeemed by activity providers with more than 210,000 vouchers used by eligible families. The FairPlay program is part of the Queensland Government’s 10-year Activate! Queensland Strategy to get more Queenslanders moving more often. More information on how to apply and eligibility criteria will be available from mid-June. Subscribe to our newsletter , or follow us on Facebook for updates.
