Nomadic Matt's Travel Site

Travel Better, Cheaper, Longer

My Favorite Gear for Travelers

Nomadic Matt, wearing a backpack, out hiking in the beautiful mountains Africa

What do you take on your trip? What do you actually need?

As long-time readers know, I’m a fan of packing light. I don’t think you really need much when you travel. As a backpacker, I want to make sure everything I own fits into one bag. I often think people bring too much stuff when they travel.

I went to Costa Rica on my first trip overseas and I took with me the entire suggested packing list my tour company gave customers. I carried around so much stuff I never used. Years later, when I did my first backpacking trip around the world, I still carried so much, I ended up leaving stuff in hostels as I went.

But I also recognize everyone has different travel styles and needs. No two travelers are alike.

As you prepare for future trips, I wanted to give you a list of what I view as practical and must-have items. These items won’t take up too much space, are incredibly useful, and will make your trip better. They are things the team and I actually use — things that have made our travels better. After all, we spend weeks (and months) on the road each year. We know what’s worth getting and what isn’t.

So, without further ado, here’s my list of the best gear for travelers:

Table of Contents

Items Under $25

Items under $100, items over $100, 1. travel padlock.

REI Flash travel backpack

My favorite bag is the Flash 55 from REI (I actually prefer the slightly smaller Flash 45, but it’s been discontinued). Other companies worth checking out for high-quality bags are Osprey, Nomatic, and MEC (for Canadians).

Some other bags worth checking out are:

  • Men’s Osprey Farpoint 40
  • Women’s Osprey Fairview 40
  • Pacsafe Venturesafe EXP45 Anti-Theft Travel Backpack

For more backpack suggestions, check out my guide to finding the right backpack !

21. Noise-Canceling Headphones

23. Travel Insurance

While not technically a piece of gear, travel insurance is something you need on the road. In fact, it’s the MOST IMPORTANT thing you need, because it protects all your other gear. While most people think of travel insurance as covering health-related incidents (and it should), it also covers the gear you take on the road (sometimes with caveats, so always check the fine print before purchasing a plan).

It’s not just about being able to see a doctor on the road — it’s about making sure that if you fall into an ocean (like I did), your camera can get replaced at no cost. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. A good budget traveler is a smart budget traveler that is prepared for anything to happen!

Read more about choosing the right travel insurance for you or use the widget below to get a quick quote:

Whether you’re heading out for a two-week vacation or a full round-the-world adventure , this list of travel gear will help you get started. You need a lot of stuff when you travel but the right stuff can make a world of difference.

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Want to Travel for Free? Travel credit cards allow you to earn points that can be redeemed for free flights and accommodation — all without any extra spending. Check out my guide to picking the right card and my current favorites to get started and see the latest best deals.

Need Help Finding Activities for Your Trip? Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace where you can find cool walking tours, fun excursions, skip-the-line tickets, private guides, and more.

Ready to Book Your Trip? Check out my resource page for the best companies to use when you travel. I list all the ones I use when I travel. They are the best in class and you can’t go wrong using them on your trip.

Must Have Gear for Every Adventure Traveler

travel gear for the global citizen

Ian Cumming/Getty Images

Every traveler needs to bring the right gear with them when they set out on a trip, but that is doubly important for the adventure traveler. Our journeys often take us into remote and wild places where not having the right equipment can have a direct impact on our experience. Whether you're trekking in the Himalaya , rafting the Grand Canyon , or backpacking in the Alps , the proper gear can make all of the difference.

With that in mind, here are some must have items that every adventure traveler should have in his or her closet.

Outdoor Research Refuge Hybrid Jacket

Outdoor Research

Staying warm and dry are two important aspects of enjoying any outdoor excursion, and Outdoor Research makes that much easier with its Refuge Hybrid Jacket. Made from weather-resistant fabrics that still offer a full range of motion, the Refuge is perfect for hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, or just about anything else you want to do outside. Best of all, the jacket weighs just 12.3 ounces and is extremely packable, making it a very versatile piece of apparel to take with you on everything from weekend escapes to extended adventures to far-flung corners of the globe.

Mountain Khakis Travel Pants

Mountain Khakis

The clothes we wear while traveling need to be comfortable, versatile, and look good too. It doesn't hurt if they can perform just as well on the trail as they do in an urban setting as well. That's exactly what you get from Mountain Khakis , which offers a diverse line of clothing, but especially some of the best pants for travel and adventure. Take for example the Alpine Utility Pant , which come with double-layered knees and seat panels, hidden pockets, and a rugged construction that makes them perfect for wearing just about anywhere. Prices vary depending on which model you choose, but they're all designed with outdoor adventurers, explorers, and travelers in mind, making the entire Mountain Khakis line-up the perfect travel companion.

Marmot Minimalist Rain Jacket

A rain jacket is another must-have piece of apparel for any adventure traveler, and Marmot now offers one of the best in aptly named Minimalist model. Tipping the scales at just 14.9 ounces, this jacket isn't going to take up much room or add much weight to your bag. Don't let its svelte size fool you however, as the Minimalist features Gore-Tex fabrics designed to keep wind and rain at bay. Pair it with a warm insulating layer underneath and you'll be all set to take on the elements no matter where your travels take you.

BioLite HeadLamp 330

Whether you're hiking a dark trail or just trying to find your way around a hostel room, a headlamp is one of the most useful products that any traveler can carry with them. Compact and lightweight, these portable sources of illumination are brighter, more efficient, and more versatile than ever before. Take the HeadLamp 330 from BioLite for instance. Not only does it offer 330 lumens of light on its brightest setting, it also features three different lighting modes, a rechargeable battery that can offer up to 40 hours of burn time, and a moisture-wicking strap that is comfortable to wear even for extended periods of time. Best of all, it weighs just 2.4 ounces and comes in four different colors.

LifeSaver Liberty Water Bottle

Icon LifeSaver

One of the biggest challenges that any traveler faces is finding clean drinking water when visiting another country. This can be especially challenging for adventure travelers, who often find themselves in remote places where bottled water is not an option. Thankfully, the LifeSaver Liberty bottle eliminates this challenge altogether by filtering more than 99.99% of all viruses, bacteria, and cysts from any water source, making it much easier to stay healthy and hydrated no matter where you go. The process is simple, quick, and efficient, with the bottle capable of producing up to 2000 liters of clean water before requiring a filter replacement.

Eagle Creek National Geographic Utility Backpack 40L

Eagle Creek

Adventure travelers like to move fast and light, and the National Geographic Utility Backpack from Eagle Creek can help them accomplish that goal. With 40-liters of carrying capacity the pack provides plenty of space for long weekend getaways or even extended travel for the minimalist adventurer. The exterior of the backpack is made from weather-resistant fabrics, while the interior is nicely padded for carrying not only clothing and extra layers, but a laptop, tablet, cameras, and other equipment as well. Best of all, the Utility pack has the ability to fold open at the center, providing full access to its contents at any time. Throw in hidden pockets for stowing a phone or passport and you have a fantastic travel companion that is perfect in size and weight.

Citizen Satellite Wave GPS Freedom Watch

A good watch is a must-have for any frequent traveler, but it gets bonus points for having the ability to automatically adjust its time based on the location you're visiting. That's exactly what you get from the Satellite Wave GPS from Citizen. This watch not only keeps track of world time in 40 different time zones, it can connect to GPS satellites in as little as three seconds, adjusting its hands automatically as needed. The timepiece even uses solar energy to keep itself operating, which means you'll never have to swap out its batteries as long as you own it. Add it classic good looks, rugged construction, and a comfortable band and you end up with a watch that was built from the ground up with the adventure traveler in mind.

Somewear Satellite Global Hotspot

Somewear Labs

Staying in touch from pretty much anywhere on the planet is a lot easier these days thanks in part to the Somewear Satellite Global Hotspot. This gadget connects to your smartphone or tablet and allows you to send text messages, even when you're traveling off the grid in remote places. The device provides the ability for friends and family to track your travels online and it even offers downloadable weather forecasts based on your current location. A built-in "SOS" button gives adventurers the ability to call for back-up or a rescue should they find themselves in trouble too, making this an indispensable tool that just might save your life. Note: A subscription service is required with the Somewear device.

RavPower USB-C PD Portable Power Bank ($80)

No matter where we travel today, we usually go with a host of gadgets and mobile devices in tow. Keeping those items charged and functioning can be a major challenge, which is where a portable USB battery pack comes in handy. RavPower's USB-C PD model which comes with 26,800 mAh of power — the most allowed as a carry-on item on a plane. it also features three USB charging ports, including a USB-C power-delivery port for charging larger devices, including tablets and even laptops. Its case is durable and rugged to help it survive the rigors of travel and a useful battery-indicator light keeps users informed of the current charge level at all times.

TaoTronics Active Noise Cancelling Wireless Headphones

Long flights and bus rides are made a little easier with a pair of noise cancelling headphones to help provide a bit of solitude and silence. Thankfully, travelers no longer have to pay an arm and a leg for headphones that offer this handy feature. TaoTronics offers a range of lightweight, affordable, and great sounding options that won't break the bank either. With 30+ hour battery life, the ability to take phone calls, and built in music controls, these headphones can pretty much do it all. And even though they are completely wireless, they also come with an audio cable for plugging directly into your mobile device or the entertainment system aboard an aircraft.

Investing in Your Future: A Guide to Citizenship Programs

travel gear for the global citizen

Exploring citizenship programs is a smart way to broaden your global reach and secure your future. These programs offer much more than a second passport. They provide better travel options, a chance to enjoy a higher standard of living, and financial benefits in stable countries. One excellent choice is the Dominica citizenship by investment program . It is known for its straightforward approach and many benefits.

This guide will show you why these programs are important and how they can be a smart investment for your personal and financial goals.

Benefits of Citizenship by Investment Programs

Exploring citizenship by investment programs reveals a highly efficient and respected pathway for securing a second passport while also investing in your future. These programs stand out due to their straightforward and transparent process, which appeals to investors globally.

●      Enhanced Global Mobility

One of the best advantages of citizenship by investment programs is better travel freedom. A second passport from these programs usually lets you travel to many countries without needing a visa. This is perfect for business people who need to travel a lot for work, as it saves time and hassle. It also makes it easier to take quick trips for pleasure or business to different parts of the world.

●      Economic Opportunities

Citizenship by investment programs also offers financial benefits. Many of these programs are in countries with low taxes. This means you might not have to pay taxes on money you make in other countries, or on inheritance and capital gains. These tax savings can make a big difference and attract more investments to the country.

Besides tax benefits, these programs often allow you to invest in real estate and other projects that can grow in value over time. This not only helps you financially but also secures your new citizenship.

●      Social and Political Stability

Investing in a citizenship program usually means you’re choosing a country that is politically and socially stable. These countries often have strong governments and safe environments, which is important if you’re thinking about moving there or making big investments.

Living in a stable country also means you can feel secure about your investments and your family’s future. This peace of mind is a huge benefit for anyone looking to move to a new country.

●      Quality of Life Improvements

Many countries that offer citizenship by investment are beautiful and have high living standards. They provide great healthcare, education, and lots of options for enjoying life. For families, this means good schools and hospitals, which are important for your children’s future.

Additionally, the natural beauty of these countries, like beautiful beaches and lush greenery, makes everyday life better. Living in a place that looks like a postcard can improve your mental and physical health.

Comparing Multiple Citizenship Programs

When looking at citizenship by investment, it’s helpful to see how these programs compare to others. Each program has its own set of benefits tailored to different needs.

Dominica Citizenship By Investment Program

The Dominica citizenship by investment program offers a straightforward and cost-effective route to obtaining a second passport. By choosing to either make a financial contribution to the country’s Economic Diversification Fund or invest in approved real estate, investors can gain not only citizenship but also access to over 140 countries without a visa. This program is appealing due to its quick processing times, generally taking only a few months, and the financial benefits of no taxation on worldwide income, making it an attractive option for individuals seeking to enhance their global mobility and financial freedom.

Malta’s Citizenship by Investment

Malta’s program is known for its thorough background checks and high living standards. Investors need to donate to the government, buy or rent property, and invest in bonds or stocks. This program is great because it offers citizenship in an EU country, allowing you to live, work, and study anywhere in the EU. The process can take from one to three years, showing Malta’s focus on detailed vetting.

Portugal’s Golden Visa

Portugal’s Golden Visa is different because it doesn’t require a direct donation to the government. Instead, you can invest in real estate, transfer capital, or create jobs in Portugal. After five years as a resident, you can apply for citizenship. This program is popular for its flexibility and the minimal time you need to spend in Portugal.

St. Kitts and Nevis Citizenship by Investment

The program in St. Kitts and Nevis is one of the oldest around. You can either donate to their Sustainable Growth Fund or invest in real estate. The passport from St. Kitts and Nevis is valuable for traveling, with visa-free access to over 150 countries. It also stands out for its quick processing, often completed in just a few months.

Investing in a citizenship by investment program, like Dominica’s citizenship by investment, is about more than just getting a new passport. It’s a way to open up new opportunities for travel, business, and a better lifestyle. Each program offers unique advantages, including EU access, flexible living requirements, and quick processing times. Choosing the right program depends on what benefits align best with your needs and future plans, helping you secure not just second citizenship but a brighter, more connected future.

The US State Department has taken the substantial step of issuing a global alert for potential threats against the LGBTQ+ community. In doing so, they urge vigilance and caution for US citizens traveling internationally, especially as Pride Month approaches—a period when visibility and events related to LGBTQ+ rights increase. The acknowledgment by Secretary Blinken reminds the global community of the endemic issues of discrimination and underlines the importance of support and proactive measures to protect LGBTQ+ individuals worldwide.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

travel gear for the global citizen

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

travel gear for the global citizen

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

travel gear for the global citizen

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

travel gear for the global citizen

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

travel gear for the global citizen

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

travel gear for the global citizen

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

This under-$20 Amazon find has completely upgraded my in-flight entertainment experience. When I fly, I usually watch movies or downloaded videos on my iPhone so I can continue to use my noise-cancelling Bluetooth headphones. This means I’m usually rotating between holding my phone in my hand and (unsuccessfully) propping it up on the tray table. This pocket-size phone mount clips onto the top of your seat tray table and perfectly holds your phone in place so you can watch movies, TV shows, or podcast videos hands-free. It features 360-degree rotation, allowing travelers to view their screen vertically or horizontally. The 1.5-inch clamp can be attached to tables, desks, gym equipment, and a variety of other surfaces. While I originally purchased this carry-on essential to use on airplanes, I’ve also attached it to my luggage handle while waiting to board a flight and on a train ride from Lucca to Florence. —Meaghan Kenny, associate commerce editor

If you've been on a group trip, you know the struggle of trying to get ready when there are too few mirrors available compared to the amount of folks in the house or hotel room. Eliminate the hassle with a portable travel mirror, like this fold-out option available on Amazon. It shifts to varying heights, has three light settings (warm, cool, and natural daylight), and folds up flat, weighing less than a pound.

travel gear for the global citizen

Associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny calls this small wireless device “a complete game-changer—I'm never going back to the days of dry hotel rooms and dehydrated skin post flight.” She's found that sleeping with it, both at home and on the road, leaves her skin less dry and helps her to wake up feeling more refreshed. It's easy to use, too: “For as compact as the humidifier is, it can still fit 11.3 ounces of water—more than enough needed for a continuous cool mist throughout the day or night.”

Sure, many totes , backpacks , and small duffels now come with a trolley sleeve to secure it to a suitcase handle, but when you find yourself using a bag without that little sleeve, keeping your things together and upright becomes a balancing act. A Cincha travel belt is the workaround: It slips over your suitcase handle, then wraps around most any bag like a seatbelt, with adjustable straps to tighten or loosen as needed.

There’s nothing worse than getting onto an airplane and your wireless headphones not connecting to the seatback entertainment system. That issue is easily averted with this wireless audio transmitter and adapter . The small device pairs to your headphones via Bluetooth and then plugs into the tiny TV on the airplane so you’re never without entertainment on long-haul flights . I keep this Amazon gadget in my pre-packed go-bag, then charge it the night before I fly so I know it's fully charged before heading to the airport. Even better is that the device can pair with two sets of headphones, so if I'm traveling with someone we can both watch the same movie at the same time.

Portable Stand.

Gimbal stabilizers come in a variety of sizes and price points. If you’re testing the waters with the smartphone travel accessory , you may want to consider this under-$50 option. The anti-shake, one-axis stabilizer allows you to capture smooth videos and crisp photos of your travels without having to think about keeping your hands perfectly still and balanced. One perk of this particular stabilizer is that it doesn’t have a corresponding app that you need to use to make the device work, so you can just pop your phone onto the handle and go. At just 7.5 inches and less than half a pound, the stabilizer can fit easily into your day bag without weighing it down.

Drink Caddy.

We’ve all experienced those long, twisty lines at the airport coffee shop that take longer than expected and leave you rushing off to your gate, juggling an iced coffee and your phone, all while somehow wheeling your carry-on bag behind you. Make that scenario a memory of the past with this luggage cup holder. The hands-free pocket slips over the handle of your luggage to hold up to two drinks and your phone. The adjustable cup holder has a Velcro opening that can be tightened or loosened to fit your suitcase handle and stay securely on your luggage as you traverse the airport. I keep this in my go-to personal item at all times, that way I know where it is before I head to the airport. Even better, if I do somehow spill a drink when using this, the cup holder is completely machine washable; I’ve throw it in with a load of towels to keep it clean.

If you’re headed somewhere warm, be it a theme park or Europe in summer, one of the best travel gadgets to bring along is a mini handheld fan. This VersionTech handheld fan is my absolute favorite of all of the ones I’ve tried. It charges quickly with an included USB charger (you can also use any micro-USB cords you're already packing), and has three speeds to keep air moving and keep you feeling refreshed. The handle of the fan can be folded back to allow it to sit on a table if you stop for a meal or coffee, or find yourself on a hot bus or train. I always have this in my backpack or fanny pack in the summer—when I whip it out and have a cool breeze blowing across my face, my travel buddies are instantly jealous that they don’t have one too.

Keeping your phone charged while traveling through airports can be difficult—not every airport has charging ports integrated into the seats at the gates, and most of the time people are huddled around the one or few outlets near the gate. I love this phone charging passport holder because I can charge my phone with an included power bank, and it has an integrated cable holder, and elastic bands to keep my phone in place as I traverse the airport. I also appreciate that the holder has a space for your passport and RFID blocking credit card slots for added protection.

A steamer.

No matter how meticulously you pack your clothes, pieces always end up wrinkled and looking like you slept in them on the other end. That problem is easily solved with this handheld garment steamer . The small electronic device weighs in at just under two pounds, so it won’t add much weight to your luggage. The steamer takes just 35 seconds to heat up, and has a removable water tank that’s easy to fill and an adjustable steam head so you can get wrinkles out no matter how your clothes are hung up. Leave this at home if you’re headed on a cruise, though; these portable steamers are not allowed on any cruise line.

Whether you’re traveling internationally or domestically, having a travel adapter is always a good idea. The universal adapter allows you to plug in your devices to outlets, no matter what country you’re in. There’s also a built-in surge protector and two USB ports so you can charge your phone or watch without having to unplug something bigger like hot hair tools or a laptop.

There’s nothing worse than misplacing something or finding out that your luggage got lost in transit on the way to your hotel or Airbnb. With an Apple AirTag , you can have constant eyes on your belongings, even if they aren’t technically with you. The tiny puck-like devices pair with your iPhone or iPad and use geolocation to let you know where your belongings are. I like that I can check on the location of my luggage, purse, or whatever else I've dropped an AirTag into with the Find My app. This is especially helpful after a plane lands and I want to be sure my luggage made it to my final destination.

Is there anything worse than checking into a hotel room and tossing and turning all night because of loud noises from neighbors or city streets? With this portable white noise sound machine, you can easily drown out the sounds of people, cars, or snoring companions. The machine has three sound options, and multiple volume settings so you can find the option that’s best for you. And because it’s so small at just 3.5 inches in diameter, it can fit in a backpack or carry-on bag with ease.

An electric handheld luggage scale is without a doubt one of the best travel gadgets, especially if you’re prone to overpacking and always have a checked bag at the airport like me. The handheld scale uses a strap to attach to the outside handles of your suitcase. Then you simply pull up with both hands using even force for the scale to display how much your luggage weighs. This is my easy way to avoid overweight fees or having to open my luggage on the airport floor to take things out and squish items into my backpack before racing off to my gate.

After flying through the friendly skies and making your way to your perfect vacation destination, your phone is likely showing that annoying red battery indicating that it’s almost out of power. With this wireless portable charger , you never have to get below 10 percent charge again. The charger can support wireless charging or charging with a connecting cable and can support Apple and Android products. iPhone users will be glad to know that with one full charge of the power bank, the device can charge an iPhone 12 at least eight times.

Keeping your personal information safe should be a top priority while traveling. One easy way to do that is with an RFID-blocking wallet, so skimmers in the pockets of nefarious patrons can’t get your credit card info just by walking by you. The wallet has multiple slots for credit cards, plus two zip pockets that are great for coins and paper money. Everything is further protected with a snap that covers both zippers and keeps the wallet closed.

travel gear for the global citizen

Another popular travel wallet option: the Slim Mint ultra-thin RFID-blocking wallet. The compact case can hold cash and whatever essential cards you need on you—credit cards, hotel room keys, metro cards—so that they are easily accessible. When empty, it weighs just 3.2 ounces.

Video shows FedEx cargo plane land on its nose in Istanbul after landing gear fails

travel gear for the global citizen

A Boeing-767 type cargo plane operated by FedEx ran into a couple of bumps and sparks as it attempted to land at Istanbul Airport in Turkey without its front landing gear Wednesday.

The cargo plane, operated by FedEx, was flying from Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport, according to a statement by Turkey's Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu , when the pilot of the aircraft informed the control tower at Istanbul Airport that its landing gear had failed to open. The official said airport officials sprang into action and assisted the aircraft in touching down, while managing to remain on the runway. Emergency response, medical teams and necessary fire extinguishing equipment was also deployed on standby, Uraloğlu said.

Video footage from the landing shows the plane touching down on the runway before it tilts forward and starts dragging on its nose the runway creating a cloud of dust and sparks. It eventually comes to a stop with its fuselage touching the ground. As the plane comes to a halt, fire trucks douse the plane with water.

"With the successful guidance of our staff, the aircraft landed smoothly on its fuselage," Uraloğlu said.

No injuries reported

Two pilots were onboard the aircraft, according to Uraloğlu's statement, and were medically assessed after the landing. No injuries were reported.

The runway where the plane had landed was temporarily closed for all flights as multiple agencies gathered on site. A video shared by the minister shows crews and officials gathered around the aircraft while a fire truck and ambulance are parked on the side.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, said Uraloğlu without going into further details into why the landing gear had failed.

Another Boeing plane issue? Don't fall for the headlines.

The freight aircraft involved in the accident is nearly 10 years old and was delivered to FedEx in 2014, according to a Boeing spokesperson. Following delivery, operators oversee ongoing maintenance for airplanes in operation. Reuters reported that Boeing 767 freighter is one of the most common cargo planes.

FedEx, meanwhile, in a statement to USA TODAY, said that the FedEx Express Flight 6268 was flying from Paris to Istanbul when it experienced an issue during landing.

"There were no reported injuries to our crew members," FedEx said. "We are coordinating with investigation authorities and will provide additional information as it is available."

While Boeing incidents have been in the news in recent months after a series of high-profile incidents, aviation experts maintain you shouldn't worry about flying .

“We don’t have to worry that there’s something systemically wrong with aviation,” Clint Balog, an associate professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, previously told USA TODAY.
