Houston to dallas high-speed rail corridor receives $63.9 million federal grant.

The 240-mile route would take under 90 minutes and travel at a top speed of 204 MPH, according to Amtrak.

Part of the high-speed rail line connecting Houston and Dallas would be built along Hempstead Road and, Texas Central, the company in charge of the project estimates it could create 1,000 permanent jobs.

Amtrak has received a nearly $64 million grant to continue planning the Texas High-Speed Rail project after several years of stagnation due to the COVID pandemic.

The project — which proposes a less than 90-minute high-speed rail route between Houston and Dallas, with one stop in the Brazos Valley — has been progressing through the early planning and development stages for the past several years as it continues to lobby for support among Texans and representatives alike. According to early concepts of the route, the Houston station would be located at the Northwest Mall site near the interchange of US 290 and Interstate 610.

The $63.9 million grant was awarded last month as part of $153 million in funding made available by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Railroad Administration ( FRA ) in early July. According to FRA, the funds were created as part of the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act which was passed under the Biden Administration in Nov. 2021. The main goal of the grant money is to "initiate, restore and enhance intercity passenger rail services." This most recent influx of federal money follows on the heels of a $500,000 grant to Amtrak in December 2023.

In August 2023, Amtrak said that it was exploring the possibility of a partnership with Texas Central, the company originally behind the Houston-Dallas corridor concept. Less than a year later, Amtrak's senior vice president and head of high-speed rail development, Andy Byford, announced Amtrak was officially in charge of the project.

"One of the first things Amtrak did in taking over the project was to undertake research to see [if] the demand is still there post-COVID that the same research indicated there was pre-COVID," he said in April during the 2024 Southwestern Rail Conference. "The actual forecast, in terms of the projected ridership, is very strong and that's important because that means you can then make a business case for the capital investment."

It is currently unclear what changes, if any, Amtrak has made to the plans for the Texas High-Speed Rail Corridor, but Byford said during his presentation that the Houston to Dallas route was nearly a perfect candidate.

"You want to have a line that is reasonably easy to construct, that has relatively straightforward topography," he said. "You're looking for routes which maybe have suboptimal alternatives, maybe a very dangerous and overcrowded interstate or overcrowded airports. If you put together all those characteristics and then you figure out which route you would build, there's one that really stands out and that is Dallas to Houston."

As of the April presentation, Byford said Amtrak and the Japanese government have entered a non-binding agreement to move the project forward again. According to Byford, the hope would be to use an N700S Series Shinkansen train from Japan. This would mean the 240-mile route between Houston and Austin could be completed in under 90 minutes at 205 MPH, which would be the fastest average train journey in the world.

"The Shinkansen has a flawless safety record," he said. "It has not had a single chain-cause fatality in its whole operation since 1964 and that's because what you're buying is a system."

If Amtrak can accomplish its ambitious goal, Byford said it could begin a new age of high-speed rails across the U.S.

"If we are successful in putting together that funding package ... then we will be looking to open in the early 2030s and that includes testing, commissioning, trial operations, and everything else," he said. "So, watch this space. There [are] still a lot of big hurdles to overcome, but I really do think that this, if we can pull it off, will be an absolute jewel in Texas's crown."

Amtrak did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the new grant, but Byford told the Texas Rail Advocates that the project has now progressed into the final step of the FRA Corridor Identification Program.

However, not everyone is in favor of the proposed high-speed corridor, including the organization ReRoute the Route — which was created by "Texas business and civic leaders" to lobby against the corridor's creation.

Citing the federal budget deficit and the nation's more than $35 trillion in debt, federal affairs advisor to ReRoute the Route, John Sitilides, said the nearly $64 million should be spent on something else.

"Because Texas is not Japan or China or Europe, the Texas Legislature prohibits wasting a single state taxpayer dollar on this boondoggle's severe public hazards," he said in a statement to Houston Public Media. "The White House would better spend that $64 million to build or repair schools, hire hundreds of border patrol agents, or deliver health care to thousands of veterans in need."

We fly to Ecuador frequently. Checking in is usually a hassle because most United agents take some time before they can verify that my passport doesn't require a visa to Ecuador. This time the process was even longer due to the cyber attack. But she was really nice to us. So glad we brought plenty of snacks to supplement the 3 flights from SEA to GYE.

Two hour flight delay, it was awful and loss of sleep.

Nothing they cancelled my connection and couldn't get me on a flight for 3 more days

First flight of the day… MINIMUM FUEL! 15 minute landing delay at HOU due to fog turned into a 2+ hour delay! Rather than circle, they had to divert to another city to refuel! Sat on tarmac at Austin to refuel. We ALL missed our connections! The crew, including pilots, were clueless. Crew was really a mess. At HOU, Untied employees were exceedingly rude to all. It was pitiful.

No lounge access with “United First” ticket. False alarm about late flight, jeopardizing connection. Wrong meal. Loose power socket would not hold plug, could not charge device. In-flight access to text messaging did not work. Toilet seat on plane would not stay up.

Crew were fine, drinks and snacks were as well but we were delayed for around 2 hrs which made our entry into Mexico delayed as well with the influx of arrivals at the same time. Sort of wasted our first day of vacation. We left Pittsburgh at 630am and did not arrive in Mexico until late dinner time.

Boarding was unorganized. They expected passengers to ask people to move their assigned seat they paid for in order to sit together. The seats even in comfort are smaller than other airlines and the flight attendants appeared not to be well prepared

Due to one crew member not showing up to work, our flight was significantly delayed causing us to miss our connecting flight in Houston to Mississippi causing us to be delayed by more than 6 hours and missing our event all together. Very disappointing. All because ONE crew member called in sick. United did grant us a $15 meal voucher, which was a small but appreciated concession that I wasn’t able to use because I ordered my lunch and paid for it before applying the concession, and the staff said it was too late to use it. Ugh! We also had a TWO delay coming back from Mississippi, but that was on American Airlines and it was due to weather, so not their fault. Anyway, not at all impressed with United’s handling of our flight and the HUGE disappointment of missing our important family event for our 90 year old mother. All that money and all that stress and emotions for nothing. Having to wait the hour to bring an employee from LAX seemed like something that should not have happened. Why don’t you have a local back-up? Santa Ana is not a little airport in a rural area.

The customer service was excellent! Check-in, baggage check-in, boarding, the flight went very smooth.

It was delayed several hours which delayed our connection in Denver. Not happy.

I was bumped to first class so I got some food. It was OK. Entertainment is whatever you bring with you since there are no seatback screens.

Dallas Hub. American taking ownership for their screwups instead of blaming their contractors and customers, trading their people, their call in service, reservation agents and their ticketing process. Make sure wheelchairs are available especially when the request is in their record.

American Airlines should be ashamed of their performance on AA1506 on August 14th from DFW to IND. First of all, after we got to the originally assigned gate C7, we were notified with too little notice for a first-flight out situation that the flight would depart from gate A25 in an entirely different terminal -- not just a gate or two away from the original gate. That was the first hiccup that started our day off poorly. It just got worse. Let it be known that the flight crew and gate agents were all as helpful as they could be during all that followed. However, the flight was a horrible mess of an ordeal. The plane was warm and uncomfortable on a hot Dallas morning when we boarded. And apparently we had to get underway for the a/c to be powered up. There was no other explanation for why we had to sit there in the heat. But before we could power up, some paperwork had to be completed, if we heard the announcement clearly enough. Then a "minor" maintenance issue had to be fixed -- but it was enough of an issue that we all had to deplane while it was being fixed, apparently because it was "too warm" on the plane for us to sit there in case the "minor" issue took too long to fix. And after we all finally deplaned and were hanging around the counter for news about when we could reboard, then a flight attendant came up and notified the gate agent that there a passenger at the rear of the plane had caused a major spill of some sort getting up and out of the plane. Turns out that was a bigger and longer delay than whatever the initial mechanical issue caused. According the gate announcements, the mechanical issue had been fixed relatively quickly in due course. But a seat was soaked and had to be cleaned up by a spill. A subsequent announcement then said that the seat belts were affected by the spill and had to cleaned. Then, either the seats or seat belts or both had to be replaced. At each of these announcements, the phrase "we're trying to get maintenance here as soon as we can" kept coming up. Clearly the gate agents were as frustrated as the passengers. After all was said and done, a minor mechanical issue and a major cabin spill issue caused a 3+ hour delay in our flight. American Airlines should be ashamed of its performance on this flight.

Go back to the old days of boarding the rear of the plane first to reduce congestion!

We received a flight delay notification over 24 hours before the flight, but it seems American didn't do anything in that timeframe to get the flight back on schedule. Gate agents were still determining when our plane would arrive. Didn't have catering ready to go when our plane did arrive. Flight attendant timeout before we left. There was a flight attendant on board who could work the flight (trained on that aricraft type and was within hours), however American chose to wait for a backup to arrive, which delay the flight further.

Our 8:45 am flight kept getting delayed. Boarded after a 2 hour delay only to be taken off the plane again. At 12:30 pm, we are told there was a new plane and we had to change terminals. Flight was delayed again to 1:50 pm. Eventually boarded again only to be on the plane for over an hour. Flight finally took off at 3:30 pm. 7 hours after original scheduled time. To top it off, couldn’t even get coffee on the plane due to turbulence.

Terrible. We had about a 3 hours delay which led to us missing our connecting.

Do not rebook people without asking .. threw the whole return trip off

The plane was very clean. The crew was excellent. The flight was delayed slightly but other than that no issues.

Awful. We had an 8 hour mechanical delay- no vouchers and no kind/courtesy/professional representatives in the entire airport. Not only was it a terrible experience for both my 7 year old and myself, I still have not heard back from American about how they’re going to correct it- I’ve sent 2 or 3 emails about our experience- which was just awful. Not to mention according to national traveling laws, we should be reimbursed… but of course they’re not responding.

Nothing. Will never ever travel on Spirit or Frontier. Both of them Garbage Airlines.

Awful. My flight was three hours late leaving DFW and we just arrived at LAX three hours late and stuck on the runway. I heard the Spirit workers at the desk in DFW say that we were waiting on a crew. I am extremely disappointed in Spirit.

My flight was cancelled an hour before take off time.

My flight was uncomfortable and crammed. There were no pockets to store things, I couldn’t move my seat back slightly. Beverages including soda cost extra. My husband flew on another spirit airline flight, which was delayed a total of 48 hours, only to be canceled.

Crew was nice, explained emergency protocol very well. Flight took off and arrived on time. Pilot explained the small delay that occurred with docking and providing updates. I would definitely fly spirit again.

Seats suck, not enough room, overcrowded planes, hectic situation all together.

On time and fast. Overall it was a pleasant experience.

The text told me it was changed to Terminal E and Gate D5. But with no one on site to ask questions there was confusion on where to go as all the gates were E's. Then we took the skyline to the D area. We left to get something to eat. No announcement was made but my daughter happened to asked and they told her our gate was moved to D12. I will not fly Spirit again.

Delayed several times. Flight was to arrive at midnight and it arrive at 3 am. A 3 hour delay is already bad but one that has you arriving in the wee hour is just disruptive and overall unacceptable. The complete lack of restitution is a joke in keeping with Spirit’s reputation of ranking bottom-low in the pecking order.

Cancelled my flight last minute and had to end up driving to Texas from Atlanta last minute. I’m going to miss another day of work, drive back to Atlanta , in my own car and spirit doesn’t want to refund the money. First time I tried flying anyone else but delta and I get ripped off . And I had. To pay for seats for a flight that didn’t happen. Usually you could say you get what you pay for but in this case, didn’t get anything and paid for everything never flying spirit again, or even attempting it or thinking about it.

There was extremely long wait times to check in my bags and pass through TSA. I almost missed my flights on several occasions.

I didn’t have enough time to catch my connecting flight and had to use a different Airline. I will be requesting a refund.

There were a lot of issues at the gate in Atlanta — which caused delays in boarding and getting to our destination. The aircraft and crew were excellent.

It was fine. The flight was delayed for 3 hours. I had things scheduled in Detroit, and I let a lot of people down by not being there on time.

First time experience and though you'll pay for *everything* meaning bags, water/snacks, even a question with a service agent - - all in all, not a bad experience whatsoever.

My departure gate was E10 but no kiosk at E10 for check in & no one to ask. A United attendant helped direct us to E38 for check in. The kiosks at E38 were all malfunctioning. A counter agent had to check us in. We then had to walk back to E10 for boarding. E10 to E38 at DfW is not an easy trek. No where in all the info they sent us indicated there were issues to over come. They can cut only so many corners. Luckily we arrived plenty early to deal with Frontier’s inefficiency.

We did not get to go on this flight because it got canceled 4 hours prior to scheduled time. We received an email that it got canceled and then 10 minutes later we received another email that it got delayed. It was very confusing and the only options they gave us for return flight home were 12 to 22 hours of travel time. That was not an option for us since we were traveling with kids and school started on Monday. We ended up opting for a refund and booking a flight back with Alaska. The flight ended up costing us $1500 and we had to book a hotel for the night. We will never book with frontier again.

I didn't like anything about the flight It was my first time and definitely my last time boarding a frontier flight. Their counter agents need training and they need to learn to communicate regularly and respectfully

The flight crew and flight attendants are poorly trained and demonstrate poor professionalism. They have a sloppy appearance and communicate with patrons poorly. It is embarrassing for them to be representatives of an airline and for them to be called professionals.

Very delayed with little to no communication from the captain or flight crew. All announcements made were not audibly understood by passengers. Very poor communication. After arrival it took approximately 20 minutes to get a jet bridge to the plane.
