This weekend is Labor Day, which is often referred to as the “unofficial end” to our summer season. And meteorologically speaking, it is the official start to fall, so there is a bit of truth to that.

Meteorologists use slightly different seasons compared to the traditional astronomical seasons that may be listed on your desk calendar.

No fear if you are a summer lover, and aren't quite ready to say your goodbyes, because there are still plenty of summer-like days to come. The technical "astronomical fall" won't start for a few more weeks, which is September 22, and this is when the Autumn Equinox will begin.

The Autumnal Equinox is when the center of sun is located directly above the equator, providing equal amounts of light and day to both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

The leading difference between meteorological and astronomical fall is the start and end dates. We begin “meteorological fall” the first day of September and the last day of November because these are the 3 months that transition us from the warmest to coldest time of the year. The start and end date to astronomical fall can vary by the year.

Another difference is that our meteorological seasons are based on the yearly temperature cycles, and astronomical seasons are based on the earth's position relative to the sun.

The reason meteorologists use meteorological seasons is because it makes it much easier to keep track of climatological weather data.

Whether you want to start fall Saturday, or in a few weeks, our days are slowly getting shorter, and fall is right around the corner.

On September 1st, the start of meteorological fall, the sun will set at 7:20 pm CT. On September 22, the start of astronomical fall, the sun will set at 6:44 pm CT.
