One of the most popular attractions in Cambodia is the majestic Phnom Kulen mountain, located about 1.5-2 hours away from Siem Reap. The mountain was given its name due to the abundance of lychee trees it once hosted, and nowadays offers visitors a beautiful view, as well as fun activities such as picnicking and waterfall swimming. For those who plan to drive up to the top of Kulen Mountain, you need to get there early, as the road is one-way traffic only.

Located about 50 kilometers from the city of Siem Reap, Phnom Kulen is one of Cambodia’s most revered sites. According to legend, it was here that King Jayavarman II declared independence from Java in 802 CE and thus began the Khmer Empire – as an independent nation.

Additionally, it’s a very sacred site with multiple temples easily accessible. Two sites most noted are the Thousand Lingas at Kbal Spean , within the Kulen National Park site and Preah Ang Thom pagoda with its giant reclining Buddha. The area is a magnet to “kru khmer” (natural medicine doctors), and attracts people seeking blessings from its holy waters, particularly the potent life-giving waters at Kbal Spean, that are said to help couples conceive.

Admission and Hours

Phnom Kulen is within the Kulen National Park, which requires a separate ticket to the Angkor Archaeological Park . It’s $20 per person if bought at the gate at the entrance to the mountain or you can book your tickets online and have them delivered to your hotel . Cambodians can enter the park for free.

If you’re going to the top of the mountain by car, van or moto, you need to go up before 11am . The road is one-way traffic only and the traffic going up finishes early, so don’t be late!

This is a place where Cambodians go to relax and play. In Cambodian culture most people dress conservatively even whilst swimming, so girls – keep to shorts and t-shirts, boys too – or if you must, at least shorts. No bikinis or speedos please!

When entering temples, be sure to remove your shoes and hats . It’s important to wear clothing that covers you from shoulders to knees. If you are not dressed accordingly, then it would be polite not to enter any of the temples.

How to Get There

Phnom Kulen is 48km from Siem Reap and can take 1.5-2 hours to reach by car or van, longer by tuk tuk but then that will only be if you want to walk up and back down again (approx. 2 hours each way, and absolutely stunning) as tuk tuk’s aren’t capable of making the steep journey to the top.

The ticket office is at the bottom of Phnom Kulen and is the entrance to the Phnom Kulen National Park. It is here that you need to pay for your ticket, if you didn’t buy it online , and show your tickets to go through. There are good toilet facilities here.

From the ticket office, it’s another 20 or so minutes of windy roads until you reach the top, where there are lots of markets selling souvenirs, clothing, snacks and drinks. From here you walk the rest of the way, following the grand staircase up to the pagoda or the lower path that leads to the waterfall and the picnic areas.

If you like hiking and are feeling energetic then the walk from the bottom of the mountain to the top of Phnom Kulen is highly recommended.

To hike up Kulen Mountain, start by taking the large road to the right of the main street that leads to the entrance gate of Phnom Kulen National Park. After about 1km, you will see the entrance gate to Wat Prohm Bram Bey, turn in here and take the stairs at the front. At Wat Prohm Bram Bey, you can choose different paths that will all eventually join up. When you reach Wat Preah Cup, follow the stairs on the right side of the pagoda to explore a natural spring, swimming pool and spirit house. When finished exploring, take the stairs on the left side of the pagoda to reach a dirt path through the jungle. Follow this path for about an hour until you emerge in a small village, and keep walking until you reach the bridge near Kbal Spean. Expect to be asked for your entrance ticket at this point. From there, it’s an easy walk to Wat Preah Ang Thom, Kbal Spean, or the Phnom Kulen waterfalls.

A private taxi / car for the day is around $50 and vans from $60-80. Organized tours including an experienced English speaking guide are available as well. It’s worth booking ahead, as it will save you time when in Siem Reap.

We highly recommend this full-day Kulen waterfall and 1000 Lingas tour , which can easily be booked online with free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour. You can choose between a shared minibus with guide, private car, private minibus or even an army jeep!

It’s also possible to visit Banteay Srei region on the way back. However if you do wish to see the temples ( Banteay Srei and Banteay Samre), you will also need an Angkor pass.

Alternatively, another nice way to complete the day is with a visit to Beng Mealea , only 7 kilometres away from Phnom Kulen. Surrounded by a 1.2 km wide moat, Beng Mealea is a beautiful temple to visit, still engulfed in jungle overgrowth and untouched.

Things to See and Do

Thousand lingas / kbal spean.

Kbal Spean is along the way to the top of the mountain and is a serene and gentle place. The 1000 carved lingas in the “Valley of the Lingas” or “River of the Lingas”, as it’s often referred to, are tribute to the Hindu god Shiva. It is a revered spiritual place for Cambodian people and it is said that the water from Kbal Spean will help couples to conceive.

As well as via the main road up the mountain, you can also get to Kbal Spean by walking from ACCB (Angkor Centre for the Conservation of Biodiversity). It’s a 45-minute walk through the jungle.

Waterfall & Picnic Area

The top section of the waterfall is quite flat and good for families or young children that want to dip into the refreshingly cool water. It’s also close to the picnic area , which makes it a really great spot to spend the afternoon ducking in and out of the water. Further down is also a small waterfall; great for timid swimmers and children.

Follow the stairs to get to the lower part of the waterfall which is the main attraction. In wet season, when the waterfall is at its strongest, the sound of the water crashing down is quite something. But it doesn’t stop people from going and experiencing the full force up close! The water isn’t terribly deep and in most sections of the basin of water under the waterfall, you can almost touch the ground. However, best if you can swim and feel confident in the water.

Whilst most people know the connection of Ta Prohm temple and the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider movie , it’s less known that Phnom Kulen waterfall makes a very brief appearance in the film. After escaping living statues in the nether regions of Ta Prohm, Lara runs out to the top of the waterfall (not bad given they are 42kms apart!), where she jumps to the basin below. We wouldn’t recommend it though, it’s unlikely you’d survive a jump like that into relatively shallow water. But they can make all of the magic they like in movies!

Preah Ang Thom

This is the main temple site at Kulen Mountain, it’s important to take off your shoes before entering the temple. There are ladies at the point where you need to relinquish your footwear, don’t worry, they’ll take good care of your shoes for a reasonable fee. Once inside you can make your way up to the giant reclining Buddha statue, reported as the largest in Cambodia, however there are several sitting Buddha’s that dwarf this one. Offering boxes line the length of the Buddha statue and many flowers and other tributes are placed all around.

Srah Damrei

Only accessible by foot, Srah Damrei, or Elephant Pond , is an area filled with stone-carved animals. This ancient Khmer sculpture is also accompanied by a couple of lions and remnants of some other animals. This is a very rewarding sight and worth trekking off the beaten path. There are guides that will be milling around the Preah Ang Thom area, seek one out and they will show you the way.

In ancient Khmer, Phnom Kulen was called Mahendraparvata , “Mountain of Indra, the King of the Gods”. It was a thriving city around the size of modern  Phnom Penh  and the birthplace of the Khmer empire, where King Jayavarman II proclaimed Cambodia’s independence from Java in AD 802. Following this, the capital moved to Roluos (formerly called Hariharalaya ).

Though known of by locals, the Kulen’s ancient city was formally rediscovered by explorers in 2012. Starting with a ground expedition and later employing LIDAR technology , Jean-Baptiste Chevance and Damian Evans uncovered Mahendraparvata and several historically important temples, like  Prasat O’Paong , which is shaped like a pyramid, with three levels and five towers, similar to those of Angkor Wat.

Kulen Mountain Day Trip – Cambodia

Siem Reap in Cambodia is as  flat as a pancake, but 40 km to the northeast of Angkor Wat, in Svay Leu District is Phnom Kulen National Park .

The small regular-shaped plateau of the Phnom Kulen mountain range protrudes from the landscape, nestled amongst the thick jungle . A day trip to Kulen Mountain is a great way to get off the beaten track to see more of rural Cambodia, along with its flora, fauna, and less-known historic sites.

Andy and I planned and went on a day trip to Kulen Mountain with a group of friends soon after we first arrived in Cambodia .

Phnom Kulen National Park

Locals consider Kulen Mountain or ‘Mountain of Lychees’ to be the most sacred mountain in Cambodia and it’s frequently visited by Buddhists and Hindus on pilgrimage. It’s located in its namesake ‘Phnom Kulen National Park’. On top of the plateau is a sacred hilltop with about 30 ruined temples. Much of the land is yet to be de-mined, which means currently, the public can’t visit many of the temples, and definitely not without an expert guide .

The entrance fee for Phnom Kulen National Park is not covered by the normal admission ticket or ‘Angkor Pass’, there is a separate admission fee. For foreigners, this is $20 USD, if bought at the gate , or you can buy tickets online in advance .

There is also the option of taking an organised Kulen Mountain tour from Siem Reap, if you do this the entry fee should be included in the tour price but double-check first.

What to See and Do at Kulen Mountain

The majority of people, locals and foreigners alike, who visit Kulen Mountain do so as a day trip from wherever they’re staying in Siem Reap . You can drive to the top or hike from the foot of the mountain in about 2 hours. The hike does give you the option to see a couple of things en route that you may otherwise miss such as:

Elephant statues -  symbols of Hinduism stands at the foot of Mount Kulen.

Preah Ang Jub – is reached via muddy tracks, obstacles such as fallen trees and roots and challenging steps. It has a pool of sacred water whose source is at the top of the mountain. Buddha devotees offer prayers here.

On our day trip, due to limited time, we skipped the hike. Instead, we drove straight up the mountain to the car park. From here you can either walk or drive (or a combination of the two) between the following different things there are to see and do .

Preah Ang Thom and the Reclining Buddha

Built on a massive sandstone rock is the 16th Century Preah Ang Thom Monastery. This houses a huge gold reclining Buddha, again, carved out of sandstone. The monastery is reached via a flight of stone steps. The approach is lined with stalls selling offerings, such as flowers, fruit, fake 100 riel notes (ghost money), and incense sticks. There is also a good selection of food and drink stalls, the smell of BBQ meat wafting past is enough to tempt any meat eater.

On either side of the steps are carvings of animals. These include a lion, a dragon, a Garuda (mythical bird-like creature), a tiger, and also snakes which form the railings leading up the hill. Several children and beggars perch on the steps and the heavy scent of burning incense hangs in the air.

Shoes must be removed, and left with piles of others, before entering the sacred area around the monastery. You then pass under the rock on which the Buddha reclines. Here are several smaller buddhas and many devotees stop to make a prayer and offering of merit. It was quite busy during our visit due to it being Chinese New Year, so we had to join quite a queue to enter the pagoda and file past the Reclining Buddha. Once outside again there is a great view across Phnom Kulen National Park and the jungle below.

Valley of a Thousand Lingas

Carved in the riverbed that passes through Kulen Mountain are thousands of ‘lingas’. These are phallic, fertility symbols of Shiva the Hindu god. They are a pattern of large bumps on the sandstone riverbed, usually on a base of the female version, the ‘yoni’. It’s said they bless or fertilize the river as it flows over them to Angkor, into Siem Reap, and onto the Tonle Sap Lake.

This is a nice spot to get out of the scorching sun and walk along the river in the shade of the trees. Some enterprising locals have even constructed what we called the ‘love seat’. A wooden swing seat covered in flowers, where you can sit for a photo moment for a small fee. Slightly touristy but a bit of harmless fun nonetheless.

Kulen Mountain Waterfalls

After all that walking around sightseeing you’ll be ready for some food and rest. There are two waterfalls at Kulen Mountain, a small one of 5 metres, and a bigger one of 20 metres further down. To the side of the smaller waterfall are several raised platforms, where you can relax and order local food and drinks. People-watching opportunities are also good here, especially during a public holiday. Local families sit on the platforms eating, drinking, chatting and playing cards.

To reach the bigger waterfall you have to descend some precarious metal steps, which can get slippery. At the bottom, there are a few rocks and a wooden swing, covered in flowers you can sit on to enjoy the view. The braver among you could always join the locals splashing around in the water for a refreshing dip. There are also lockers (i.e. metal boxes with a padlock) where you can leave your belongings, which can be handy.

The amount of water is very much dependent on the time of year and how much rain there’s been. We were lucky considering our visit was in the dry season – there was quite an impressive cascade.

Something else to remember is that despite not being overrun with tourists yet, Phnom Kulen is popular with locals during festivals and public holidays. So if you’re crowd-averse, you may be better off visiting another time. Our visit coincided with Chinese New Year and was busy with Cambodian families enjoying the waterfalls. Seeing how they were enjoying their holiday added to the experience.

Eat and Drink at Kulen Mountain

There are many local food and drink options around the car park area, on the approach to the reclining Buddha and at the top of the smaller waterfall. They range from local snack stalls to BBQs to pop-up restaurants where you can sit and order a full meal. You can also order from a restaurant and have the food brought to your raised platform near the waterfalls.

The food hygiene may be questionable and as with much ‘off the beaten track’ local food, I wouldn’t be 100% sure of it. When we were there it was busy and everyone was eating so we decided to take the risk. We chose to eat on a raised platform and ordered a selection of noodles, soups, curry and rice to share. They were all good and didn’t harm any of us. If you’re nervous about eating local food you may prefer to take a picnic lunch.

How to Get to Kulen Mountain

As mentioned before most people visit Kulen Mountain as a day trip from Siem Reap. Unless you plan to hike to the top you’ll need to take a moto, car or mini-bus as tuk-tuks can’t manage the climb. These can be booked from most hotels, guesthouses and tour agencies in town. Alternatively, you could book yourself on a Kulen Mountain Day Tour . 

If you decide to do the day trip independently, transport to Phnom Kulen National Park will vary in cost depending on the vehicle and how many people. Expect to pay approximately: Moto – $20, Tuk-tuk – $35, Taxi (max 4) – $50 USD, Mini-van (8-12) – $60 – $80) USD.

The journey from Siem Reap is on a combination of tarmac and unpaved red-dirt roads and takes about two hours by car or mini-bus. An early(ish) start is needed as vehicles can only go up the mountain before 11 am and come back down after midday. This is to avoid them meeting in the middle of the narrow road. Depending on the time of year the road on the ascent of Kulen Mountain can either become very dusty, coating the roadside vegetation in a thick layer of red dust in the dry season or very muddy in the wet season. 

There are a few places en route to stop for a toilet or refreshment break, which we did a couple of times. Stopping to peruse the family-run roadside stalls selling everything from bottles of gasoline to beer, to bananas, is all part of the experience.

Other Activities at Phnom Kulen

If you have more time and energy you could opt for a trekking, cycling, or Kulen Mountain Motorbike Tour . This could be for one day or multiple days, including overnight camping. These guided tours enable you to get even further off the beaten track. They allow seeing some of the less visited sites of the Phnom Kulen mountain range. This appeals to me and I hope to do a two or three-day trek at some point.

Less visited sites you can visit depending on the type and length of tour you take include:

Preah Kral Pagoda  – an isolated hilltop pagoda. Prasat Oh Pong – a tall Khmer temple. Srah Damrei – meaning ‘Elephant Pond’. Found here are impressive stone animals, which are said to be protectors of the mountain. There’s a life-size stone elephant, along with smaller replicas of lions, a cow, and a frog. Poeng Tbal -an interesting site with ancient rock carvings. Bat Cave – this is well known as a place of Buddhist meditation, where the monks also act as guides. Aran Rung Chen and Pa Oung – two more obscure, crumbling, moss-covered temples. Wat Preak Krau – a modern cliff-top pagoda.

Whilst I’d still consider a day trip to Kulen Mountain as off the beaten track it is becoming more touristy. However, there’s plenty to see and do which makes it a worthwhile trip and gives you a break from the temples.

Those lingas are really interesting, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything carved into a riverbed before. I only had 3 short days in Siem Reap, so I hope to make it back to Cambodia someday for a longer visit!

Yes they are interesting. If you do make it back try to visit Kbal Spien too, it’s further downstream from Kulen mountains and has the most amazing riverbed carvings! Best not to go in middle of rainy season though as it’s difficult to see them all under the water. It’s a nice walk/ trek to see them too!

How much is Angkor ticket, how does one get it and how is it used?

The Angkor ticket can be purchased at the toll booth en route to Angkor Archaeological Park. There is always queue, payment is made in cash and they will take photo for you. Once you get the pass, make sure you keep it with you safely (or use name tag) because you have to show your pass to authority guards at the entrance of each temple. Phnom Kulen National Park

Banteay meanchey, preah vihear, kampong thom, stung treng, sihanouk ville, rattanakiri, oddor meanchey, kampong speu, kampong chhnang, kampong cham, tbong khmum, things to see and do - siem reap, cambodia, phnom kulen national park - siem reap.

Kunlen mount is situated at north east of Angkor Complex about 50 Km, it takes approximately 2 hours drive up to the hill top with 487 meters height and plateau stretches 30 km long, it is opened for tourists in 1999 by private owned and charged for $20 toll per foreign visitors. The company developed road up to the peak. It is only possible to go up before 11 Am and only possible to come down after midday, to avoid vehicles meeting on the narrow road. Kulen is considered by Khmers to be the most sacred mountain in Cambodia and it is a popular place for domestic visitors during weekends and festivals. The hill is used as the ancient capital city II in AD 802 to declared himself as god king and announced independence from Java, then giving birth to present day Cambodia. On the hilltop there are 56 Angkorian temples made of bricks and volcanic stones, but most of them are badly in poor condition, today name Hahendrapura, founded in the reign of King Jayavarman temple base only is remain intact. The visible sites in modern day are Prasat krau Romeas, Rong Chen ( the first mountain temple), Sra Damrei ( Elephant pond), Thousands of phallic symbols carved a long liver bed and divided in three ports for the Hindu trinity gods. These three ports used for baptistery. At the summit of the hill you can see Buddhist pagoda and a large reclining Buddha statue 8 meters length carved into a sandstone bock in 16th century. The last attractive spot is a waterfall, it splits in two spots the first waterfall is four or five meters heights and 20 to 25 diameters in dry and raining seasons. The second waterfall is 15 to 20 meters heights and 10 to 15 diameters in dry and raining seasons. The water is considered holy and Khmers like to bottle it to take home with them. The source of water eventually flows in to Tonle Sap Lake and is thought to bless the water ways of Cambodia.

UNESCO x Guerlain Women for Bees Programme: Awareness Raising Training on the Importance of Native Bees at Phnom Kulen National Park

On Tuesday, 30 th July 2024, UNESCO supported the first awareness raising training on the importance of native bees and their roles in pollination, organized by NTFP-EP Cambodia at Phnom Kulen National Park. This significant training brought together 19 trainees, including selected villagers from five Community Protected Areas (CPAs) – Along Thom, Kla Khmum, Sang Ke Lak, Ta Penh, and Popel of the Phnom Kulen National Park, park rangers, and four former women beekeepers trained in the first phase. 

The primary objective of the training was to raise awareness among local communities about the crucial role of native bees in pollination and the ecosystem, as well as their conservation. The training included a variety of activities designed to educate and engage participants. Each participant was provided with a booklet covering all the training contents. The full-day training also included a sharing session by four former women beekeepers from the first phase, who played significant roles as resource persons, sharing their experience, knowledge, good practices, and the challenges they faced in beekeeping. During the training, participants were actively engaged, illustrating their strong interest in the programme. Pre-test and post-test were also conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the training. As a result, participants achieved higher scores in the post-test after completing the training.

The training emphasized the importance of community involvement in conservation efforts. By including villagers from various CPAs and former participants from the first phase, the training aimed to foster a sense of collective responsibility and encourage sustainable practices that support native bee populations. 

The awareness raising training at Phnom Kulen National Park was a significant step towards fostering a deeper understanding of the importance of native bees. Through education and involving the community, the training aimed to inspire collective action to protect these essential pollinators and strengthen the protection of the ecosystems. 

The UNESCO x Guerlain Women for Bees Programme started its first scientific pilot through conducting assessments, providing beekeeping trainings and awareness raising activities at the Angkor Archaeological Park since 2021. The programme aims to promote sustainable beekeeping through training and capacity development, with a specific focus on women’s empowerment. Currently in its second phase, UNESCO is working closely with the Ministry of Environment, international expert, and local NGOs on advancing scientific beekeeping practices with stingless bee. The programme also focuses on promoting awareness of the importance of native bees conservation among selected trainees, particularly honey hunters and women from the five CPAs of Phnom Kulen National Park. To enhance efficiency and increase participation from female participants, the next training will be organized at CPAs, providing opportunity not only for women but also for village heads, commune chiefs, and councilors.
