The first single "Dance the Boogie" is already thrilling and the second single, which has the same title as the new studio album, also hits the spot. The new record shows the whole range of the iconic cowboys. So far, the band has sold 2.5 million records in total. Even their debut album "Internashville Urban Hymns" from 2005 sold over 300,000 copies in Germany alone.

• The newer Universal release goes a step further, removing "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys" from the opening credits (and in fact from the film completely) as well as "Freedom Epilogue" and replaces them both with a very inappropriate generic harmonica-driven instrumental which is meant to sound like a Willie Nelson song.

"The Electric Horseman" is the kind of movie they used to make. It's an oddball love story about a guy and a girl and a prize racehorse, and it has a chase scene and some smooching and a happy ending. It could have starred Tracy and Hepburn, or Gable and Colbert, but it doesn't need to because this time it stars Robert Redford and Jane Fonda .

The movie almost willfully wants to be old-fashioned. It's got bad guys from a big corporation, and big kisses seen in silhouette in the sunset, and it works Fonda and Redford for all the star quality they've got. But "The Electric Horseman" doesn't try to be completely guileless. It has a bunch of contemporary themes and causes to dress up its basic situation -- which is, let's face it, Girl meets Boy (and Horse). And although we are never for a moment in doubt about the happy ending, there is a certain basic suspense as Redford and Fonda head for the hills and the evil corporation follows by helicopter.

The movie begins with Redford in the process of downfall. He plays a former five-time national champion rodeo cowboy named Sonny, who has retired from competition and signed on as the spokesman for a cereal named Ranch Breakfast. This is some cereal. It is fortified, we gather, not only with vitamins, minerals, and bran, but also with leather, nails, and sagebrush. Redford makes personal appearances on behalf of the cereal, wearing a garish electrified cowboy suit that plugs into the saddle of his horse. The cowboy outfit isn't the only thing that's lit up: Redford's drunk most of the time, and ignominiously falls off his horse during a half-time show.

Things come to a climax during a big Las Vegas convention sponsored by the conglomerate that owns Ranch Breakfast. Redford's supposed to ride onstage on a multimillion-dollar champion racehorse. But he has a run-in with the president of the con- glomerate, discovers that the horse is drugged and on steroids, and decides to make his own personal gesture of defiance. He rides onstage, all right -- and right offstage, too, and down the Vegas strip, and out into the desert.

Jane Fonda plays a TV newswoman who's covering the convention, and she does some clever detective work to figure out where Redford might be headed. And then the movie's more or less predictable: Fonda finds Redford, grows to share his indignation at how the horse has been treated, and trades her loyalty for exclusive rights to the story. It turns out to be a really big story, of course, as the conglomerate tries to track down its racehorse and the TV networks get in a race to find Redford.

If you spend much time scrutinizing the late show on television, some of this material might not sound dazzlingly original. The device of the famous runaway with a journalist in hot pursuit, for example, is straight out of "It Happened One Night" -- and as Fonda calls her office from remote pay phones, we're reminded of Clark Gable in exactly the same situations. The notion of the last of the cowboys heading for the hills and being tracked by helicopters is also familiar; it's from "Lonely Are the Brave," with Kirk Douglas , and some of the shots look hauntingly familiar.

The relationship between Fonda and Redford is also pretty basic stuff, in which the gruff outdoorsman and the perfect lady grow to respect each other while sharing the rigors of life on the run. Bogart and Hepburn made that relationship a classic in "The African Queen," but Redford and Fonda have much the same chemistry. Remember that scene on the boat with Hepburn putting her chin in her hand and giving Bogart the old once-over? Fonda does that to Redford, and it's about as erotic as six of your average love scenes.

Both Redford and Fonda have identified themselves with a lot of the issues in this movie (which are -- I have a list right here -- the evils of corporate conglomeratism, the preservation of our wild lands, respect for animals, the phoniness of commercialism, the pack instinct of TV journalism, and nutritious breakfasts). But although this is a movie filled with messages, it's not a message movie. The characters and plot seem to tap-dance past the serious stuff and concentrate on the human relationships.

If "The Electric Horseman" has a flaw, it's that the movie's so warm and cozy it can hardly be electrifying. The director, Sydney Pollack , gives us solid entertainment, but he doesn't take chances and he probably didn't intend to. He's an ideal choice for orchestrating Redford and Fonda; he directed Fonda in "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" and has made a subsidiary career out of directing Redford (in "This Property is Condemned," "Jeremiah Johnson," " The Way We Were ," and " Three Days of the Condor "). He has grown up with them, he respects the solidity of their screen personas, and he seems to understand (as the directors of Bogart, Hepburn, Gable, et al., did in the forties) that if you have the right Boy and the right Girl and the right story, about all you have to do is stay out of the way of the Horse.

Berlin-based weisenheimers the Bosshoss reinterpreted contemporary pop and hip-hop hits in the style of traditional country music. Singer/washboardist Boss Burns (born Alec Völkel), singer/guitarist Hoss Power (Sascha Vollmer), lead guitarist Russ T. Nail (Dean Micetech), bassist Gus Brooks (André Neumann), mandolinist Hank Doodle (Mathias Fauvet), and drummers Frank Doe (Ansgar Freyberg) and Ernesto Escobar de Tijuana (Tobias Fischer) co-founded the Bosshoss in 2004, taking the name from a song by the legendary U.S. garage band the Sonics. Clad in ten-gallon hats and fringe-adorned western shirts, the septet developed a sound they dubbed "country trash punk rock," performing rockabilly-inspired covers of songs by Britney Spears, Nelly, and OutKast. The gag quickly caught on with audiences, and by year's end the Bosshoss signed with Universal Music to record their debut LP, Internashville Urban Hymns. A 180-date tour followed in 2005, as did a sponsorship deal with ice-cream manufacturer Langnese, whose trademark jingle "Like Ice in the Sunshine" the Bosshoss regularly covered. After contributing to the soundtrack for the 2006 film FC Venus, the group issued its sophomore effort, Rodeo Radio, which debuted in the Top Ten on the German pop charts and led to a resurgence of interest in their debut, which started selling again and eventually went gold. Over the next few years the band remained immensely popular in the German-speaking countries, winning numerous awards and earning a further gold record in Austria. Maintaining an "if it ain't broke don't fix it" approach, they continued to churn out albums at a prodigious rate, each one incorporating more of their own original material: 2007's Stallion Battalion was followed by Do or Die in 2009, Low Voltage in 2010 and Liberty of Action in 2011. The following year, singers Boss Burns and Hoss Power became judges on the German version of the TV talent show franchise The Voice. I got a rare look behind the scenes at Ananda’s e-bike systems factory in China

I recently took a trip to China in order to see for myself how many of the e-bike drive systems and components we use daily in the West were originally designed and produced. And no journey to view the origins of the most popular e-bike components would be complete without a visit to Ananda, one of the largest and most advanced OEMs in the industry.

I was able to visit the company’s R&D headquarters in Shanghai as well as one of their factory locations in Wuxi, giving me a close look at the design process and how those designs get manufactured into real e-bike systems.

After starting operations in 2001, Ananda has focused purely on micromobility systems since 2011. They’ve long built many types of hub motors for e-bikes and scooters, but expanded into their own mid-drive electric bike motors in 2017. And the company’s scale has grown massively ever since.

You might not have heard of the company yet, largely because they rarely advertise which major e-bike brands use their motors, controllers, and other components. But to put things in perspective, they produced around 6.5 million electric motors last year. Most of their products are built for the massive domestic market, but around 600,000 were exported to Europe and North America, where they made their way onto e-bikes we know and love. Many of the biggest brands use their systems. There’s a good chance you’ve got an Ananda motor, controller, or other hardware in your garage right now and just don’t realize it.

The company is constantly growing and a new Vietnamese factory is currently in the works, but because the North American and European markets are booming for Ananda, the company is currently working on setting up a new European factory. Ananda also recently opened up its first North American service center in Los Angeles and is expanding its local US-based team.

Ananda is responsible for designing and producing just about every component used in an electric bicycle other than the batteries and BMS. However, they work with several battery manufacturers and provide testing to certify compatibility with their extensive drive system lineup.

Their core competency is in research and development, followed by production implementation. While some companies merely design components produced elsewhere and others operate factories to manufacture third-party designs, Ananda does it all in-house, focusing on a wide range of systems ranging from entry-level to premium components.

And while Ananda started as mainly a component maker, offering their own motors and controllers, they’ve since evolved into an entire system integrator. Now they supply many e-bike brands with an entire e-bike system, minus the battery.

That all-encompassing approach has necessitated a huge footprint, with the company touting over 1,000 employees and over 200 automated machines, 70 of which are just for automated coil winding.

Ananda is also one of the most mature mid-drive motor makers in the Chinese market, now developing several higher-power models for the North American market. And with an obvious understanding of what Americans want, they explained to me that all North American motors they develop are compatible with throttles. Talk about knowing your audience!

Touring Ananda’s R&D facility in Shanghai

My tour at Ananda started in the R&D center. There, the company has a team of engineers and designers working on every component of e-bike drive systems.

A major piece of that design and development process is ensuring that each component can withstand the rigors of daily use in the harsh environments that e-bikes and e-scooters experience everyday.

I walked through rows of machines operating every type of torture test you can imagine. I saw motors being heat-shocked with high and low temperatures. I saw tanks with motors undergoing humidity testing, alternating between humid and arid conditions. Rain machines were running to keep a constant spray of water on the components. Each machine looked like a progressively worse type of condition that I’d definitely avoid putting my own e-bike through.

There were robotic button pushers who simply pushed buttons on handlebar displays tens of thousands of times. Motors were shock-loaded to simulate sudden stops and hard braking during operation; Imagine a broomstick in the spokes situation that instantly grinds the motor to a halt.

Dozens of dynamometers were set up for long-term testing, performing months of testing on constantly running motors.

Entire e-bikes were installed in full-scale testing machines to simulate long-term testing of complete systems over tens of thousands of miles.

In other parts of the R&D center, banks of 3D printers whirred away, producing prototypes that may become entirely new drive systems. One such system currently in the works is an e-bike hub motor that includes a three-speed transmission inside the hub. It will essentially become the marriage of a hub motor and an internally geared hub, offering the best of both technologies.

Across the hall, old-school technology in the machine shop contrasts with the high-tech machines, offering no-less-critical machining capabilities for fabricating and modifying new designs.

Teams of bike mechanics install test systems on mule bikes while test riders put them through miles and miles of real-world riding verification.

I even got to have a go myself, donning a company helmet and testing out several of the new motors and drive systems that Ananda has produced. I tried an M100 mid-drive motor that felt like a perfect balance of power and comfort, as well as a more powerful 750W M6100 mid-drive motor that was a lot of fun but, frankly, probably more power than I truly needed most of the time. That model is destined for the US market and is likely to be popular among riders seeking powerful performance.

I even tested a moped-style hub motor system complete with cast wheels that I was sure included a torque sensor in the drive system due to how responsive the pedal assist was. Only afterward did I learn it was actually just a really nicely designed cadence sensor that they had managed to remove almost all the pedal lag from.

After testing the e-bikes, they showed me their new diagnostic tools, which include software designed to easily diagnose issues that could arise over a lifetime of use. Instead of having an unclear error, shops or companies can simply use the software to run checks on the bikes and find out exactly what could be causing a specific issue.

The second half of the day was spent at one of Ananda’s factories, where I saw their manufacturing firsthand.

The first step is the inspection and analysis of components from Ananda’s suppliers. Workers inspect these components down to the micron level, ensuring everything is manufactured to spec. Even a small deviation in a motor shell, for example, could result in extra motor noise and increased wear.

That level of precision inspection is what separates the truly high-quality manufacturers who understand the level of accuracy necessary for consistently performing and reliable products.

From there, we moved to the factory floor, where motors are manufactured. The first step is the winding of the motor cores, which involves spools of copper wire being intricately wound around the motor’s stators.

If you’ve ever seen the way electric motors were built in years past, and honestly still in some places, you’ve probably seen videos of women hunched over tables using their delicate fingers for hand-winding motors. But Ananda’s over 70 automated motor winding machines make that a thing of the past.

Now, motor cores are not only wound without human labor, but they’re also done so much more accurately and uniformly. The beauty of robots is that they never make mistakes or get tired and sloppy; they just wind up every single motor the exact same way each time.

Those wound motor cores are then inspected before heading on to the next step of assembly into motor casings. The assembly process is a combination of manual and automated tasks. High-precision jobs, such as placing the gears and building the internal transmissions, are done using robotic assembly machines.

These sub-assemblies are then passed onto the rest of the assembly line, where they are joined by hand with the motor cases. A laser engraver serializes each motor shell along the way, and then it heads to sound testing to ensure it powers up and operates as quietly as it should.

Some motors are assembled using automated machinery, ensuring precision placement of the motor gears and components.

Each finished motor is scanned into the database and then packaged up for shipment to an OEM that will build it into an e-bike, e-scooter, or e-moped. Years ago, e-bike motors were always shipped in foam packaging for protection. But Ananda has switched to much more environmentally responsible paperboard packaging, offering equal protection without using such harmful materials that are not able to biodegrade.

Interestingly, in another part of the factory, I saw many of the same torture testing machines that I had first seen in the R&D center back in Shanghai. As I quickly understood though, this was all part of the quality control process. The same way new designs get torture tested during development in Shanghai, the factory does the same extensive testing as part of spot inspections for each batch of components produced. The motors undergo similar loading and accelerated lifespan testing to ensure they are all performing as intended, and that there aren’t any deviations from one production batch to another.

The next stop was to see how controllers were made, and that involved getting suited up and heading into the company’s clean room facility. There, automated pick and place machines built up circuit boards that then passed through various soldering machines to produce the circuit boards. The process and outputs are all monitored using high-precision 3D optical imaging, allowing the workers to inspect each solder joint from many angles and ensure all the components are properly soldered to the board. Many of these components are too small to inspect with the naked eye, and so this type of imaging and analysis allows the company to ensure every tiny little leg and every minuscule drop of solder is not only correctly placed, but also properly soldered so it doesn’t shake loose 10,000 miles from now.

Next, conformal coating is applied to electronics, creating a waterproof barrier that prevents water vapor from corroding the metals and circuits.

Each of these steps is a small but critical part of the manufacturing process, ensuring that the components produced in Ananda’s factories perform their required functions not just at the start of a product’s life, but also for many years to come.

Rooftop solar array

The last stop of the tour was something I was surprised to see. Before I left the factory, I was led up to the roof where a large solar array gathered much of the energy used by the factory.

While it doesn’t cover 100% of the company’s energy usage, it does offset a large portion and helps to further promote the same message that the electric vehicles using Ananda’s components share: that how we generate and use energy has a major impact on our environment.

These types of steps go a long way to reducing our own harmful effects on the planet. Humans will always need to travel around their cities, and using two-wheeled electric vehicles is one of the most energy-efficient ways to do it . If companies can offset as much of the emissions generated from producing those vehicles, then all the better.

The takeaway

I’ve known of Ananda’s electric motors for years, and in fact built some of my first e-bikes with their motors over a decade ago. But I had no idea how large Ananda had grown and just how much of the entire e-bike system they now produce.

Far from just another e-bike motor manufacturer, Ananda is truly an entire system integrator. Producing everything from displays to controllers and every type of motor you can think of, Ananda has positioned itself as a leader in the micromobility space.

You don’t make 10 million motors a year and several million more controllers and other components without learning a thing or two about how important the quality and precision of those manufacturing processes truly are.

The company has obviously taken all of that learning to heart, developing a high-tech and highly automated design and manufacturing system that has grown into a massive operation.

Caltrain celebrates 160 years with electric train tour

( KRON ) — Today marked the last of three events celebrating Caltrain’s new electric trains. Visitors got to explore the new interiors, learn about new features, and get a glimpse of what Caltrain will be like later this year.

Electric trains aside, Caltrain was also celebrating 160 years with special commemorative events.

Some of the events included Caltrain giveaways, food trucks, games, a photo booth, and art demonstrations by Erick Reqitzer from 3 Fish Studios, who created the artwork seen below.

Through the electrification program, Caltrain’s new trains are supposed to enhance the speed, capacity, safety, and comfort of their commuter service while reducing emissions and improving air quality.

Some of the new features on Caltrain’s 19 new electric trains include more power outlets, onboard displays with trip information, restrooms, and more storage space.

Initially, Caltrain will replace approximately 75% of the diesel fleet with new electric trains, which will operate between San Francisco and San Jose by the end of this year.

Full replacement of the fleet with electric trains would occur at a future time when funding is identified, and the remaining diesel trains reach the end of their service life, Caltrain said.

Khabarovsk, Russia fascinates visitors with its unusual heritage and fabulous untouched nature. Tourists are drawn to the native culture, eclectic architecture and mesmerizing waters in this off-the-beaten-track destination, which promises a unique and memorable vacation.

As the center of Russia’s far eastern region of Khabarovsk Krai, the city offers celebrations throughout the year which are sure to give added flair to your trip, from traditional culture days to large-scale food fests. It is easy to keep a full itinerary during your stay thanks to its many theaters, museums, restaurants, workshops and quest rooms. Guests who want a more relaxed holiday can venture into the serenity of Khabarovsk nature, including the coast of the Sea of Japan or one of the region’s many picturesque lakes .

Khabarovsk Architecture

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. This is due in large part to major changes which the city underwent in the mid-19th-early 20th centuries in conjunction with developments in the political, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

• Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
• Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
• Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
• Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

• Khabarovsk Regional Puppet Theater;
• Triad Pantomime Theater;
• Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
• White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs

While the city’s souvenir selection is not as diverse as in other Russian cities, guests can still find something suited to their tastes on their tour to Khabarovsk. Amur River and the Sea of Japan offer an abundance of seafood that can be tasted on the spot or brought home in dried or smoked form. Yet it is the rich culture of the local indigenous peoples which provides the largest selection of national souvenirs.

If you’re looking for an original gift, traditional Nanai slippers are comfortable and warm. Sewn from leather or fabric and decorated in a bright, colorful style before being trimmed with fur, they make the perfect house shoes in winter. Traditional decorations include amulets which are made from animal bones, fur or fabrics and decorated with ribbons and colored beads.

Standard souvenirs like plates, magnets, mugs and flasks stamped with images of Khabarovsk or its coat of arms can be purchased in souvenir shops, which are mostly located downtown and at the airport and railway station.

Paris is going electric — for a new perspective on the city, take a low-carbon car tour

With its sights set on banning fossil fuel cars by 2030, Paris is embracing electric vehicles — and you can take one for a spin around the capital’s landmarks.

Vintage cars, with vintage engines, typically have a lot to say: they grumble around corners, groan up hills and continue to mutter to themselves even when they’ve come to a stop. But this one isn’t like the others. The white-and-blue Renault 4L, which rolled off the factory floor in 1955, should be as talkative as the rest of her kind. Yet, all I can hear as we stop at a red light between the honey-coloured apartments of the 8th arrondissement are wafts of French radio, blowing in through the sunroof on the breeze.

From the back seat, it’s hard to tell exactly where it’s coming from — beyond one of the cast iron balconies on either side, perhaps, or the next car over, where a blonde woman is cradling a miniature poodle on her lap.The light turns green, and the little Renault sparks into life. The engine sounds like a spaceship powering up— there’s an electrical whirring that grows increasingly high pitched. And then we’re away, speeding over the cobbles.   “She’s surprisingly powerful,” driver Renaud Garza calls back with a chuckle from beneath his navy chauffeur’s cap. “With the battery, I can drive at around 75mph.”

Increasingly, the streets of Paris are going electric. Like our Renault 4L, battery-powered cars have become a more popular sight over the last decade — together with a burgeoning herd of e-buses, bikes and even unicycles. It’s all part of the city’s plans to outlaw all but electric vehicles by 2030 in preparation for becoming carbon neutral by 2050. Officials have run incentives to boost the use of e-vehicles over recent years, such as the €100 (£85) per month leasing scheme that had to be phased out early due to the vigorous uptake. Infrastructure is being upgraded, too, with charging points appearing around Paris at increasingly regular intervals and a trial electrified motorway, which can charge cars as they drive, under construction nearby.

Renaud typically drives a fleet of petrol Citroën 2CVs between Paris’s blockbuster sights for his tour company 4 Roues Sous 1 Parapluie. But over the past few years, they have added an electric version alongside the Renault 4L. Both have retrofitted, specially designed batteries.

“Get ready — I’m about to drive in the most dangerous place in Paris,” Renaud calls from the front seat as we approach the Arc de Triomphe, the sound of sirens growing steadily louder as the traffic thickens. Here, 12 major roads, including the Champs-Élysées, converge into a vast, eight-lane roundabout with the alabaster arch at its heart, vehicles endlessly circling like planets around the sun.As we’re pulled into orbit, the little Renault judders across the cobblestones, rattling on a circuitous trajectory past uniformed gendarmes posing for photos and the arch’s intricate friezes. “The French invented the roundabout,” says Renaud with a proud nod. The Etoile, as this one is known, is the proud maman of them all.

We turn right down a shaded thoroughfare lined with plane trees, past cafes heaving with suited workers lunching beneath gold parasols, and bump across a bridge over the Seine to see our next stop piercing the sky. “The Eiffel Tower was built as the centrepiece for the 1889 World’s Fair,” Renaud explains as we draw closer to one of its broad, latticed feet. “Parisians didn’t like it at the time — they’d just finished their city with all of this nice stone and then this popped up. It was ugly, too industrial. But it was useful as a radio tower, so they kept it.” Soon, we’re close enough to see its ornate ironwork and the mechanics of the lift, the cogs slowly rotating. The garden around it is closed, in the process of being preened in preparation for its starring role in the Olympics’ opening ceremony — athletes will travel on boats for six miles down the Seine before coming to a stop here. It’s been 100 years since Paris last hosted the Olympics in 1924, and the tower is being repainted gold — closer to the colour Gustave Eiffel originally chose — to mark the occasion.

“The French are quite proud, it’s true,” Renaud says as we do another lap. “We want to impress the world.”

We decided to try Rail Express on the spur of the moment this week. Made a reservation the night before. Arrived, checked in and listened to the safety guidelines. All the employees seemed knowledgeable and friendly. Their website states that it is a 2 hour experience. We went out and back in an hour and a half. The scenery was lovely this time of year. I can't imagine taking this ride in the dead of summer. It was alot more fun than I thought it might be, especially on the way back which is downhill. At the turn around point, you spend about 30 minutes. There are lots of red chairs and a picnic table or two. Bring a snack and water. Would I do it again, probably not but I would recommend those interested to give it a try. It really is fun and you don't spend very much energy peddling ( the engine kicks in).

My husband found Rail Explorers in Amador by chance and we decided to take it! This is a great experience and what a surprise! We visited on Easter (we forgot about the holiday since we didn't have any family plans this year) and the staff who greeted us were just as happy as us to be there. The parking is very well maintained and plentiful for our entire group. We checked in at the small gift shop and they gave us bracelets and said we could wait in the tables and chairs until they were ready for us to start. It was a chilly but sunny beautiful spring day so we were thankful for that because the previous day was one of the roughest rain and lightning storms of the year and the group was delayed so we JUST made it on our day. The staff offered to take our pictures by their sign and showed us to the bathrooms to use before we departed as there were no bathrooms on the trip. And let me just say the bathroom was a trailer like one at events I've seen. I was so surprised when I went into the bathroom and there were like 4 or 5 stalls and a sink with a mirror! They also have a ground level more accessible large port-a-potty. We were called to the carts and given the safety and operational instructions about the carts and what we should expect from our excursion. Everyone was super nice and very informed - they all supported each other which was nice to see. We got on our cart, we had a 2 person one and I was surprised it was so spacious - the website said you can bring a dog and/a cooler/backbacks etc. We were super eager to take our cart out! The cars are motor assisted so we weren't expecting much resistance, but I was a little worried about it at first because I'm not in the best shape! But when we were given the OK and took off, the resistance was next to nothing! My feet were almost slipping off the pedals like I was on a bike that the chain fell off LOL. They offered cars with 4 seats as well. The ride was about 8 miles total according to the guides and we stopped traffic a few times to cross the highways - that was funny, I had no idea we were going to be crossing road ways, but the staff operated the RR Crossing lights, bells, and arms and also sent staff out in neon vests to ensure no cross traffic. The ride itself was pretty relaxing and super fun! It may have been too early for many wildflowers but we were able to see some flowers against the green hills from all the rain. At the halfway point, we slowed and stopped our cars and were guided toward a bluff overlooking a valley in the distance. It was beautiful and there were seats all along the bluff. Great for pictures and a picnic! The staff turned our cars around and we were off back to where we started. All in all it was a very nice adventure - we'll bring some friends and more food next time! Thanks for being open on a holiday too!

This was such a fun experience. The staff was super friendly and welcoming, and the scenery along the track was beautiful. Pedaling was pretty easy since it was assisted, and the seats were comfortable. I went at the beginning of April, so all the grass was green and full of life. It was also raining nearly the entire ride, but they provided ponchos and hand warmers. It was honestly so fun despite the rain making it extremely cold. I appreciate the staff still going out to ride with us even in that weather. I would definitely go again!

Great experience! Very professional staff is very attentive and monitors safety as the priority. Very easy pedal uphill with the motors, and a brisk downhill ride at 15 mph makes for an exciting time! I wholeheartedly recommend this trip!

What a cool adventure this was! The rail cars themselves are new, and almost effortless to pedal. Even going uphill was easy! The staff was very friendly, attentive, and intent on all involved being safe and enjoying the experience. We are in our mid-50s and found it enjoyable, but there were also families with small children that found it fun. Being the middle of spring, all the trees and grasses in Amador County are beautifully green and flowers are blooming. The scenery was magnificent! We only wish it lasted a little longer. Would highly recommend for anyone who is up for doing something unique in the area.

What a surprisingly fun adventure! Tucked away on a small road in Ione is Rail Explorers. Prepare for Amador counties version of Hogwarts Express. 2 of 4 person custom pedal assist rail cars will take you up into the hills of Gold Country along 4 miles of track. Stop over for a picnic and enjoy the views, including horses, cows and even Preston Castle off in the distance. Hold on to your hats, this time it's all downhill and it's much faster this time. We had a great time. Thank you!!

The ride with Rail Explorers!

We saw this outfit on the local news and it looked like fun. It WAS! The rail bikes are pedal cars (two-seaters and four-seaters) that ride on abandoned railroad tracks and have an electric motor assist. The tour starts in Ione (Hunter Lane is a dirt gravel road, but rest assured, you're going the right way!) and you ride the Amador Central rail right of way for 4+ miles to the turn-around point. Going out is mostly uphill, but with the electric motor it's a breeze. The turn-around is on a hilltop that has a nice view of Highway 88 and an abandoned mine, which is nice since it takes a while for the crew to turn the bikes around for the return trip. The way back is mostly downhill, and it's easy to top 25 MPH. That might not sound like much, but when you're riding on an open vehicle with no steering wheel, it feels plenty fast! Unfortunately, they're only operating for a few more weeks until they shut down for the winter, but they plan to open for more tours in the spring.

A fun afternoon riding through the hills where you can enjoy the scenery and see cattle roaming near the tracks. The staff really made the trip fun and enjoyable.

Electricity Cuts to Affect Costa Rica Next Week, Confirms ICE

The Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) informed through a press conference about the electricity cuts that will be carried out in different parts of the country.

According to ICE, rationing will begin on Monday, May 13th. Roberto Quiros, ICE manager, stated that based on the data available until this morning, the rationing would extend for five calendar days, affecting only the country next week.

The institution declared that the service would be suspended from Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. In extreme cases, this schedule could be extended from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. ICE authorities explained that any change in Costa Rica’s climate could improve the situation. However, rainfall forecasts for the country suggest a deficit, which is unfavorable in the midst of this scenario.

Although ICE’s Electricity Manager initially said that the cuts would not exceed two hours, on Thursday, he indicated that there could be situations in which they could be extended for up to three hours.

Quiros suggested that customers should proactively check the websites and social networks of the electricity distribution companies. They are the ones that will draw up the schedules and define the places that will be affected. As reported by the personnel, the information will be updated daily.

“ Rationing will be communicated to all our customers through text messages and calls. Therefore, it is important to have updated data,” said ICE officials.

ICE’s authorities explained that the bill will continue to be charged as normal. In other words, only the energy consumed will be charged and the power outages won’t be included in the bill.

They also emphasized the need for the population to reduce electricity consumption to face this emergency and overcome it as soon as possible. Costa Rica will experience what other countries such as Colombia and Ecuador have had to deal with.

“Together, ICE Group and the distribution companies continue to make efforts to minimize the impact of the effects of the El Niño phenomenon. The Group’s technical teams are working 24 hours a day to analyze weather data and ensure the efficient operation of the generation plants,” concluded the institution.

These Russian stone carvings date back to 12,000 BC. WHAT??!

With its gracious, broad and tree-lined boulevards, well maintained turn of the 19th to 20th century buildings and a lively riverfront, the city of Khabarovsk is often called the most European city in Asia. Nothing in the tranquil city hints of a history that goes beyond the middle of the 19th century, but a short road trip along the Amur River is enough to unfurl a treasure trove of petroglyphs (prehistoric rock carvings) that are believed to date back to 12,000 BC.

The Khabarovsk Krai, which has about 789,000 square kilometers of territory, is one of the most sparsely populated places on the planet. These vast swathes of emptiness are visible when one drives on the highway that connects Khabarovsk with the industrial city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

75 kilometers north of Khabarovsk and just off the highway and on the right bank of the Amur is the Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan, where the petroglyphs are located. Residents call the village the ‘home of angry spirits’, thanks to the mystical occurrences that many have claimed to witness there.  

History on the rocks 

The area has about 200 petroglyphs, with a significant number being well preserved. The petroglyphs are easily accessible, as they are near the water’s edge on basalt boulders.

The best time to visit the area is actually early or late winter (despite the brutal cold), since the overflowing waters of the Amur hide them in the warmer months. Floods and ice floes have also caused considerable damage to many of the petroglyphs. Locals say some of the boulders have been turned upside down. 

The carvings that date from different periods depict hunting scenes, animals, such as elk, horses and mammoths, shamans and shamanic masks and even people sitting in boats.

Russia’s Far East is believed to have been one of the last habitats of mammoths before they became extinct. Among the best-preserved petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan, there is one engraving that clearly depicts a mammoth, while another shows a mammoth with an unknown creature. There’s also a large depiction of a beast with a tail.   

Svetlana Onenko, a local historian who is also the curator of the indigenous people’s ethnographic museum and cultural center in Sikachi-Alyan, says the very existence of the mammoth depictions proves that the petroglyphs date back to around 12,000 BC. She adds that the ancient dwellers of this area probably also hunted mammoths.

The older images, dating to the Paleolithic age, were carved out using stone tools. It should be noted that some archaeologists argue that the wild horses depicted in some of the petroglyphs did not exist in the Amur Region even in the Neolithic age.  

The newer carvings, including those of shamans and shamanic masks were used with more modern tools. These images are sacred to the Nanai and other indigenous groups who live in the village with a total population of just 300. Onenko says the members of the indigenous community are descended from the people who carved out the petroglyphs. Some European anthropologists, however, believe that the indigenous people were more recent settlers, who moved to the area around 2,000 years ago from Manchuria.  

An abode of Shamanism  

Neo-Shamanists visit the area from different parts of the world and take part in rituals, which some suspect as being influenced by a cult. Such is the belief in Shamanism in this area that the museum, which has a large number of indigenous artefacts, crafts and ancient Chinese coins, keeps its Shamanic objects in a designated space that is ritually blessed. “Shamanic objects are believed to possess a powerful (and potentially dangerous) energy,” Onenko says.

Locals claim to spot mystic occurrences near the so-called Starukha (Eng.: “old lady”) rock formation. According to indigenous legends, human beings did not die at one point of time, but their population grew so large that there wasn’t enough food for everyone. So the earth’s spirits decided that people, like animals, would also have to die.

The Starukha was apparently the first human being to face death and ended up turning into that big (and apparently haunted) rock. 

First Russian visitor 

While the Nanai and other indigenous groups were aware of the existence of the petroglyphs for centuries, the outside world came to know of them only in 1859, a year after the foundation of the city of Khabarovsk.

This “discovery” was made by Richard Maack, a geographer, naturalist and explorer who set out on an expedition of the Amur and Ussuri valleys. Maack, who was born in the Russian Empire’s Baltic governorate of Livonia, studied natural sciences at the University of St. Petersburg and undertook several expeditions to Siberia and the Russian Far East in the 1850s.

Maack’s main area of interest was botany and six previously unknown plants that he collected by the Amur were named after him. His expedition north of the newly-founded Khabarovsk led him to Sikachi-Alyan, where he spotted the petroglyphs. There are less than a handful of surviving copies of Maack’s book titled, ‘Travel on the Amur river made by order of the Siberian department of the Emperor’s Russian Geographical Society in 1855’, which contains a wealth of information.  

Russian archaeologists, scientists and historians took a great interest in the petroglyphs in the 20th century. In the 1930s, archaeologist Nikolai Kharlamov photographed them in detail. Three decades later, ethnographer and historian Alexei Okladnikov went on several expeditions to the area and wrote about the petroglyphs in detail in two books. His findings suggest that the artwork of Sikachi-Alyan had some resemblance to its counterparts from South East Asia, Polynesia and Australia.

The petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan are now among the most visited sites in Khabarovsk Krai. The Russian federal government was declared the legal owner of the petroglyphs in 2018 and efforts are underway to better preserve them, as well get the rock formations listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Bad Bunny pays homage to New Orleans music culture during electric Most Wanted Tour stop

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The Smoothie King Center was filled to near-capacity on Tuesday night as Bad Bunny, one of the world’s biggest music stars, brought his “Most Wanted Tour” to New Orleans. The Puerto Rican rapper, known for his energetic performances and catchy songs in Spanish, thrilled the crowd with a mix of hits and a special jazz-inspired number, paying homage to the city’s rich musical heritage.

With 17,000 attendees, the arena was buzzing.

“New Orleans looked like Puerto Rico last night!” Fox 8 reporter Andres Fuentes said. “17,000 Latinos all dancing to Bad Bunny”

Bad Bunny’s stage setup was designed to look like a bridge, which was not unique to the New Orleans date, but a coincidental nod to the Crescent City Connection.

Sitting beneath it, Bad Bunny spoke about New Orleans’ rich musical history and how honored he was to perform in the city. He then took a seat at a piano and played a jazz-inspired piece.
