Often referred to as the City By The Sea, Newport, RI is a spectacular place to experience on the New England coast . Between the Gilded Age mansions and the gorgeous Cliff Walk, to amazing shopping & dining, and sailing tours, Newport has something for everyone, and is sure to be a memorable trip.

If you’ve been thinking of taking a Newport, RI day trip, be sure to keep reading because having done several day trips here myself, I’ve learned and experienced all the best things to do in Newport, and am excited to share my tips to help you plan the perfect day.

Is It Worth Visiting Newport, RI?

Newport is most definitely worth visiting. With a deeply-rooted history that still feels very much alive within the city, you can almost feel though you’ve stepped back in time when visiting Newport. With plenty of coastline to explore, you’ll also feel incredibly connected to nature, and instantly relaxed. And there’s so much character at every turn, from the cobblestone sidewalks of Thames Street, to the Georgian-style homes along the waterfront on Washington Street, and of course the Gatsby-era mansions that millionaires once called summer homes, it’s sure to be a memorable experience.

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Newport, RI during a day trip, this list will help you plan the perfect day. And if you’re looking for help to plan the perfect itinerary to maximize your time while visiting Newport, be sure to scroll to the end of the list because I’ve got some tips that may help you!

1. The Cliff Walk

The Newport Cliff Walk is at the top of everyone’s list of the best things to do in Newport, and it’s honestly my favorite thing to do here as well, and completely worth the praise it receives. The Cliff Walk is a paved pedestrian path that hugs the coastline, and offers you amazing opportunities to see some of the best views in Newport. And the best thing about it? It’s completely free.

During the Cliff Walk, you’ll get to take in absolutely breathtaking views of the Atlantic, and encounter a few special places along the way that make for great picture spots, including Forty Steps, and the rocky coastline viewpoints along that stretch. Newport, RI is worth visiting just to experience the Cliff Walk.

How To Get To The Newport Cliff Walk

The Cliff Walk actually has a few access points, but the most popular is the beginning of the path which is close to Easton Beach, right by The Chandler Hotel. There are also access points to the path at Narragansett Avenue, Webster Street, Sheppard Avenue, Ruggles Avenue, Marine Avenue, Ledge Road and Bellevue Avenue. A popular place to start the path is at Forty Steps, and you would start at the Narragansett Avenue entrance to begin there.

Where To Park For The Newport Cliff Walk

I’m going to be honest with you, parking for the Cliff Walk can be tricky, especially in season (June-September), and even moreso on weekends. You’ll likely want to arrive knowing it could take some time to find a parking spot, but fear not! There are plenty of options, depending on how much you’re willing to pay, and how long you’re willing to look for free street parking.

Along Memorial Boulevard at Easton Beach, there is metered street parking, and this is the most convenient option if you want to start the Cliff Walk at the beginning. Easton Beach also has paid lots, and there are usually available spot since the lots are fairly large, but you’ll pay between $15-$25 to park for the day.

There is also a pay-by-plate lot at the Narragansett Avenue entrance, which is where you would want to park to start Cliff Walk at Forty Steps.

Before you arrive at Easton Beach, there are residential parking spots on the side streets off of Memorial Boulevard. In season, some may be permit parking only, but year-round, I’ve had some good luck finding free parking in that area. I’ll usually circle the area a few times and try and look for a spot (or simply Uber over from downtown, or walk to make it easier).

Tip : The city only charges for parking at Easton Beach and the Cliff Walk lots between Memorial Day and Labor Day, so if you take your Newport, RI day trip after Labor Day, or before Memorial Day, you’ll likely get free parking.

How Long Is The Newport Cliff Walk?

The Newport Cliff Walk is 3.5 miles long one way, so if you decide to walk the entire 3.5 miles to the end, be sure to plan for enough time to walk back.

Can You See The Mansions From The Newport Cliff Walk?

Many of the most famous mansions in Newport are on Bellevue Avenue, which runs parallel to Cliff Walk, so their back lawns face the Cliff Walk path. But, it’s actually hard to see some of them while walking on the path because they’re situated pretty far back from the water to avoid erosion issues. But, you can get a good look at The Breakers and a few others while strolling along Cliff Walk.

If you really want to see the best views of the Newport Mansions, though, I do suggest getting tickets to go inside, which will also allow you to explore their interiors, as well as back lawns where you can take in amazing views of the Cliff Walk from a different perspective.

2. Walk To Goat Island Lighthouse

Goat Island Lighthouse is a beautiful little lighthouse on (as I’m sure you’ve guessed) Goat Island. The island is part of the city of Newport, and is easily walkable from downtown Newport. In fact, it’s just about a mile from Bowen’s Wharf, which makes for a very pleasant excursion.

Once you’re at the lighthouse, you’ll have some awesome views of the Newport Bridge, and also be on the grounds of the Gurney’s Resort & Marina, which has a lovely little path along Narragansett Bay, where you can often see sailboats cruising by (I even saw a sailing class for children from here, and it was such a cool experience).

It’s worth the small trek out to Goat Island to escape the hustle of downtown and have some quieter moments by the lighthouse during your Newport, RI day trip.

3. Explore Bowen’s Wharf

Bowen’s Wharf is probably the most touristy part of Newport, and yet, it still feels really authentic and fun. And if anyone is a fan of the KJP brand from Instagram, you can find the Kiel James Patrick flagship store , owned by the creative husband and wife team, here at Bowen’s Wharf.

At Bowen’s Wharf, you’ll be surrounded by sailboats bobbing in the water, and lots of unique shops and some really fun restaurants. On summer weekends, you’ll find crowds, too, but I think it’s absolutely worth visiting during your Newport, RI day trip.

4. Go Wine Tasting

A short 15 minute drive outside of downtown Newport, and you’ll find yourself at Newport Vineyards , where you can enjoy calming views of the grapevines and enjoy tasting some local wines. At Newport Vineyards, there are different options for basic tastings and flights, and also really nice farm-to-table dining experiences in a beautiful setting.

On-site is also Taproot Brewing Co. , so you could also sample some local beer while visiting, but more on that later on in this list.

5. Have Lunch Or Dinner At Castle Hill Inn

The absolute best hotel in Newport in the Castle Hill Inn , which sits right on the water and has amazing views from all over the property. But for a day trip to Newport, you can visit one of their two restaurants for lunch or dinner to enjoy the grounds.

I personally prefer The Lawn, which is a casual dining experience that offers both lunch and dinner on a terrace outside, and also has Adirondack chairs for drink service.

There is also the main dining room at the hotel, which has a more upscale feel and menu, and completely indoors.

After your lunch or dinner at Castle Hill Inn, I recommend taking a walk over to the lighthouse on their grounds. It’s such a cute little lighthouse to see in person, and also provide amazing coastal views.

6. Tour The Mansions

There are 11 mansions in Newport, RI that you can tour, but for a day trip, I would recommend picking one or two, depending on what else you’re interested in doing for the day.

If you can only do one, I highly suggest you choose The Breakers , which is the most popular (and I think the most exciting) to visit. This mansion was a summer house for the Vanderbilt family, and has 70 rooms, including over 40 bedrooms, and is extremely grand and opulent, and loaded with history. I personally think Newport, RI is worth visiting just to get a peek inside these gorgeous mansions.

Getting its name from how the water would crash against the rocks, you can probably guess that this home is also ocean-front, and can be found along Cliff Walk (but if you remember, you really can’t see it from the Cliff Walk path, and it’s best to do an actual tour).

On-site at The Breakers is also a cafe where you can purchase food and drinks, and there is also free parking during your visit. Tickets can be purchased individually for just The Breakers, or you can buy a combination ticket to visit Marble House (which is next on my list!).

Marble House was also a Vanderbilt family summer home, and is most known as having a Chinese tea house built on the property. It’s a really exciting place to experience, and you can purchase either a Duo or Passport ticket to see multiple mansions, and get a bit of a discount. Marble House also has free on-site parking.

Other really fun mansions to tour are The Elms, Rosecliff and Kingscot. But for your first visit to Newport, The Breakers and Marble House are the best options (and I would say Rosecliff is a close third).

7. Go For A Ride On Ocean Drive

Ocean Drive is about 10 miles long, and one of the most scenic drives in the state. Even for a Newport, RI day trip, this is one of the best things to do.

During the drive, you’ll pass by a few mansions, Brenton Point State Park, Fort Adams, Gooseberry Beach and Hammersmith Farm, which is where Jackie Kennedy spend her childhood. You’ll, of course, also pass beautiful landscapes during the entire drive.

Tip : To start your cruise along Ocean Drive, you can either begin in downtown Newport at Thames and Wellington, or outside of town at Ocean and Coggeshall Avenues (use these GPS coordinates: 41.45679261107366, -71.3102932106861). I personally think it’s better to start in-town because you’ll be driving on the right side of the road, closer to the water. But you really can’t go wrong with either.

8. Enjoy The Local Beer

While the local breweries aren’t right in downtown Newport, if you’re a fan of trying different brews, there are a few places that will be well-worth driving a short distance to.

We’ve already touched on Taproot Brewing Co. , which can be found at the Newport Winery, so be sure to add that to your list if you plan to go brewery hopping. There are also these really great breweries to try:

• Newport Craft Brewing and Distilling for local beer and spirits tastings, as well as factory tours.
• Coddington Brewing Co. for beer flights and a restaurant.
• Rejects Beer Co. for local beers on tap, as well as comedy nights!

There are also some more breweries a bit further outside of Newport. If you’re up for it, Twelve Guns Brewing and Pivotal Brewing Company are located in Bristol, and The General’s Crossing Brewhouse is located in Jamestown.

9. Head To The Beach

Even for a Newport, RI day trip, you can still take a walk on the beach. The best beaches to visit in Newport are:

• Easton Beach , which is the beginning of the Cliff Walk. You’ll often see surfer’s riding the waves here, and there are also public restrooms.
• Gooseberry Beach is probably my favorite, and the prettiest beach in Newport, but it’s a bit trickier to visit. You must purchase a day pass in advance ( which you can do by clicking here ), but it’s also along Ocean Drive, so you can swing by during your drive and combine these two attractions.
• Fort Adams Beach is a very small beach, but it also has plenty of free parking, and the park is also free to visit, so this is a great and easy option if you want to get to the water easily and without paying anything.

10. Take A Sailing Tour

One of the absolute best things to do during a Newport, RI day trip is to head out onto the water. My favorite tour that I’ve done has been with Classic Cruises , which is a sailing tour on schooner Madeleine along Narragansett Bay. I’ve found the prices to be very fair for such a great experience, and it’s very easy to book online (I highly recommend booking at least 2-3 days in advance on weekends because they fill up fast).

During my cruise with them, they provided lots of fun information about the area, and even offered to take pictures of everyone with the sails in the background. It was a great experience, and one of my favorite things I’ve done to make Newport, RI worth visiting.

11. Hit Up The Shops

Shopping in Newport is plentiful, and there’s a great mix of franchised stores and independent boutiques to pick from. Definitely be sure to walk down Thames Street if you’re looking for some unique finds.

But there are so many shops in Newport that you could spend your entire day visiting the shops and still not see them all.

Best Shops In Newport, RI

If you’re looking to scope out the best shops and boutiques for your Newport, RI day trip, below is a list of my favorite places to pop into when I visit. Of course, there are tons of places to shop in Newport, and I always seem to discover a new favorite during each visit, but these are my staples:

• Shore Soap Co. – The flagship store for this Rhode Island-based handcrafted soap company is always so fun to visit, and one of the reasons Newport, RI is worth visiting.
• Kiel James Patrick – I’ve already mentioned them, but their store is really inspiring to visit in-person, and such a treat to peruse! This is a great place if you’re looking for modern/classic New England clothing.
• Seashells in Bloom – A really lovely mix of jewelry and floral pieces made out of seashells.
• Wald & Sea – An incredibly inspiring home goods boutique. I’m pretty sure I always leave here with something for our home!
• The Space & Tea Exchange of Newport – A really fun place to re-stock your kitchen pantry, as well as find some cute and unique gifts.
• Cottage & Garden – A amazingly curated boutique with antiques, garden decor, home goods and gifts.

12. Tour The City By Trolley

If you want to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time, and also pass by some of the best mansions, and take a tour of Ocean Drive, then a trolley tour is definitely the way to go (and it’s pretty affordable!).

You’ll board an old-fashioned trolley at the Newport Bus Terminal, and cruise around the city for 90 minutes with a professional guide giving you all the best historic and interesting information about the city.

Tip : There is plenty of parking at the bus terminal, but it is paid. You’ll only need to spend about $3-$5 to park while you’re gone on the tour, though.

13. Explore Fort Adams

We’ve touched on the beach at Fort Adams State Park, but you can actually explore the historic fortress, which is the largest and most complex coastal fortress in the U.S., and also a National Historic Landmark. Fort Adams has history dating back to 1824, and was an active fortress up until World War II, so there are so many stories and things to learn while visiting. And since it stands guard over Narragansett Bay, there are also wonderful water views to be had.

Tip : To visit the fortress itself, you’ll need to purchase tickets for either self or guided tours. Parking is free!

14. Take A Lighthouse & Mimosas Cruise

If sailing isn’t your thing, Classic Cruises also offers a Lighthouse and Mimosas cruise, where you’ll get to see the area’s lighthouses, sip on delicious mimosas and snack on madeleine cookies.

The tour is 75 minutes long, and rather than boarding the Madeleine schooner, you’ll hop onto the Rum Runner II, a classic motor yacht that was originally built in 1929 to help mobsters smuggle alcohol during prohibition. So even just being able to say you were on a boat with such a cool history is pretty exciting, and this is definitely one of the best things to do in Newport, RI.

While the focus of the tour will be lighthouses, the crew will also be able to point out different locations along the way, and they’ll also play some fun music during the cruise to elevate the atmosphere.

15. Dine At America’s Oldest Tavern

The oldest tavern in the U.S. is the White Horse Tavern , and it can be found right in Newport! For an upscale but cozy dining experience, this is a must while on your Newport, RI day trip. The menu focuses on local seafood, and also has caviar service and a great raw bar, and offers a modern take of traditional New England cuisine (they always have vegetarian dishes as well for those who don’t eat meat).

For certain holidays throughout the year, they also have a great brunch, so for special occasions like Mother’s Day or Easter, this is a great place to consider if you happen to be visiting Newport to celebrate your mom, or during the spring holiday.

16. Tour The Historic Homes

While Newport is home to some of the most amazing Gilded Age mansions, it’s also have some beautiful residential homes and neighborhoods that are so fun to admire. If you walk away from the waterfront areas, you’ll be able to get lost in the historic streets and find gorgeous homes dating back to the 1600-1700s. These beautiful clapboard-style homes will often have plaques telling you when it was built, and come in all kinds of different colors. It’s always fun to stroll through the streets and imagine what life was like back when these beautiful homes were first built.

17. Get A Lobster Roll At Newport Lobster Shack

If you’re looking to get an amazing lobster roll during your Newport, RI day trip, be sure to stop at Newport Lobster Shack . Located right in downtown at Long Wharf, this place is a casual little shack that serves up the best of New England fare like chowder, lobster bisque, lobster rolls, fish ‘n chips and fries. You’ll also find covered seating next to the shack overlooking the water.

The best part about Newport Lobster Shack is that everything is caught locally by fishermen in the Newport Fisherman Cooperative, so this will be some seriously fresh seafood! In the summer, there will be longer lines, but it’s definitely worth the wait. It’s also open year-round, so if you happen to visit during off-season, you’ll still be able to grab some delicious food.

Free Things To Do In Newport, RI

While most things in Newport cost money, there are some free things that you can do (some of which we’ve already covered on this list). Most of the free attractions and activities in Newport are outside of the city, so if you’re on a tight budget, you may have to leave Newport’s downtown area to get to some of the more budget-friendly places. Below is a list of free things to do in Newport, RI during your day trip.

How Should I Spend A Day In Newport, RI?

The great thing about this destination is that most everything is fairly concentrated in the downtown area, so it’s very easy to plan your Newport, RI day trip. But if you’re a little overwhelmed and looking for help to make the best itinerary for your trip, I’ve put together a list of things to consider to help you make the most of your day.

Tip 1: For day trips, I always suggest arriving early and staying for dinner to really make the trip worth it. Arriving early is also nice because you won’t have to worry about parking areas filling up quickly, and you’ll be able to enjoy a couple of hours in the morning before most other tourists begin to arrive and fill the streets. I would suggest you try to arrive by 9a.

Tip 2 : Before your day trip, it’s a good idea to decide what you want to experience with the fewest crowds, and then plan to do that in the morning. For example, if you’re looking to experience the Cliff Walk without as many people, you may want to do that first thing when you arrive. Of if you’d like to experience downtown and Bowen’s Wharf while it’s still quiet and just as the shops begin to open for the day, do that first.

Tip 2.5 : I’ve been to Cliff Walk first thing in the morning, as just before sunset, and even though it’s really nice and pretty much deserted in the early mornings, it doesn’t ever feel too crowded in the late afternoons/early evenings. My personal tip would be to head into downtown Newport for some quiet moments in the morning.

Tip 3 : Plan your tours and your excursion to Goat Island Lighthouse (if you decide to do that) after lunch. This is when Newport will start to fill in with more people, and the tours and lighthouse will be a nice way to escape the crowds for a couple of hours.

Tip 4 : If there’s a restaurant you really want to visit, check and see if they take reservations. This is especially important during peak season and on weekends for dinner. This will eliminate wait times, and help you make the most of your time during your Newport, RI day trip.

Tip 5 : Since Cliff Walk/Bellevue Avenue are about a mile away from the shops and restaurants in downtown Newport, keep this in mind as you plan your day. Usually, I’ll start my Newport, RI day trip in the downtown area, then drive to Cliff Walk just before dinner, and end my day at Castle Hill Inn for dinner and sunset.

How To Get Around Newport, RI

The best ways to get around Newport are by walking, biking or driving. If you love to explore places by bike, Newport does have about 6 miles of designated bike lanes throughout the city, but keep in mind that traffic can be congested in peak season, and the bike lanes are not separate from the road.

Driving around Newport is easy, but you will run into traffic getting around the city during peak season. It’s best to park your car, and spend the day exploring by foot or bike.

Is Newport, RI Walkable?

Newport, RI is very walkable! To get to most attractions, you won’t walk more than a mile, and likely much less than that. Most of the shops and restaurants are concentrated together, and the only places that will require longer walks to get to would be Cliff Walk and Bellevue Avenue (where the best mansions are), and Goat Island Lighthouse. Those will all be about a mile from Bowen’s Wharf in downtown Newport, but the walk will be pleasant and easy.

If you’d like to explore Ocean Drive, this is one thing I don’t suggest you do by walking. Driving is definitely the way to go in this case.

If you’d like to visit Castle Hill Inn for lunch or dinner, you will have to drive there as well since it’s 4 miles outside of downtown Newport.

Is There Uber In Newport, RI?

Yes, Uber is available and easily accessible throughout the entire city of Newport. If you need to get from downtown Newport to Cliff Walk or Bellevue Avenue, and aren’t up for a walk, Uber is actually a great option so you don’t have to move your car.

Where To Park In Newport, RI

Parking in Newport can be tough and overwhelming if you don’t look into it ahead of time, and to keep your day trip as stress-free as possible, I highly suggest you research parking before your visit and have a plan in place. The parking area I really like and use every time I take a Newport, RI day trip is either the Newport Gateway Center Parking Lot, or the parking garage located right across the street at 1 W. Marlborough Street.

Once you get to your parking spot, I suggest you leave your car there all day, unless you don’t plan to come back downtown for the rest of the day (for example, if you leave downtown to do the Cliff Walk, and don’t plan to come back downtown, you can certainly leave the parking area to drive to the Cliff Walk).

Best Places To Eat During A Newport, RI Day Trip

Besides the places mentioned in the list (White Horse Tavern, Castle Hill Inn and Newport Lobster Shack) there are a few other places I love to eat at when I visit Newport. Here some of my other favorites:

• Diego’s – Awesome Mexican place with amazing tacos, quesadillas and margaritas. Great outdoor patio at Bowen’s Wharf.
• Wharf Southern Kitchen & Whiskey Bar – Great spot for small bites and drinks (think hush puppies, fried pickles and tater tots), or a nice dinner with very homey and Southern influence.
• Brick Alley Pub & Restaurant – Really great casual place with a mix of comfort/pub food and seafood. A Newport staple.
• Newport Sticks And Cones – Great ice cream place!
• Look for stands all over downtown selling Del’s Lemonade!

Is Newport Better To Visit Than Providence?

Newport and Providence are both cities in Rhode Island that make for wonderful day trips and weekend getaways, but they’re very different, and one isn’t better than the other. Newport is worth visiting if you’re looking for a more upscale and ritzier feel with lots of opportunity to be by the water with the Cliff Walk, boating tours, beaches and tons of harbor-front walkways.

Providence is an under-rated city that has a more urban feel with lots of opportunities to experience local theater, incredible restaurants, tour prestigious universities like Brown and RISD, explore museums, visit a wonderful zoo and also a place where you can take romantic gondola rides up and down the calm river that runs through the city.

Depending on the vibe you’re looking for during your day trip, both make excellent options.

Can You Take A Train From NYC To Newport?

No, Amtrak does not have a train that goes directly into Newport. You will need to take a train from NYC to Providence, and then take the ferry from Providence to Newport. Alternatively, you can also take a train from NYC to Kingston, and then take a Ride Share, taxi or car service to Newport.

This route isn’t recommended for a day trip, and is better for longer stays in Newport, as the entire journey will likely take 4 or more hours one-way. Keep in mind that the ferry only operates seasonally, so plan accordingly.

How To Get To Newport From Boston

The best way to get from Boston to Newport, RI is to drive, as there is no direct public transit route. The drive from Boston to Newport is about 1.5 hours, depending on traffic, which makes for a very easy day trip!

If you don’t have a car and need to rely on public transit to get from Boston to Newport, there are a few options. You can either take a train from Boston’s South Station to Providence, and then a bus from Providence to Newport. Or, take a bus from South Station in Boston to Providence, and then another regional bus from Providence to Newport.

Once you arrive in Providence, it’s also possible to take the ferry from Providence to Newport, which takes 1 hour.

Best Time To Visit Newport

June-September is high season for Newport, with July and August bringing the most crowds. During this time, everything will be open, and you’ll experience the best weather, and most people will agree that Newport, RI is worth visiting during this time.

To avoid the crowds, I actually love visiting in May before Memorial Day, and in late September. Parking will be free at most lots and meters during these times, the weather is a bit more mild, and there are fewer crowds (but everything is still open).

What Is Newport, RI Known For?

Newport has become known for hosting the Newport Folk Festival, an internationally-recognized music festival where famous artists such as Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez have performed. Newport is also known for its lavish and historic Gilded Age mansions, as well as being widely considered as the Sailing Capital of the World.

New Zealand’s first and most popular marine reserve is a day trip everybody’s got to take when staying in the Auckland region ! It’s one of the best places in New Zealand to see marine life close to the shore. Goat Island is situated near the Auckland town of Leigh. Its waters are a marine reserve meaning it is protected from fishing. Plus, it has a no-touch policy where you cannot take any of the sea creatures, including shells, away from the marine reserve. That way, the fish can thrive at Goat Island, while us backpackers can enjoy observing marine life in its natural habitat.

How you enjoy Goat Island is where the fun comes in. There are a few awesome ways to experience the Goat Island Marine Reserve which we will go through in the list below!

1. Snorkel with the Fish

This doesn’t take much imagining but one of the best things to do in the Goat Island Marine Reserve is to do some snorkelling! You’ll probably want to hire the whole getup, wet suit and all for those chilly water temperatures. Gear hire and tours are available in the nearby town of Leigh. 2. Clear Kayak

One of the more unique things to do in Goat Island is to jump in a clear kayak and see the fish without even getting wet! When the swell is calm, you’ll get clear views all the way to bottom sandy and kelp forest bottom, along with all the creatures that call it home. 3. Scuba Dive

To spend a little longer with the fish, do some scuba diving! Tour operators in Leigh will either rent out equipment or take you on a guided scuba tour if you are a certified diver. 4. Visit the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre

Run by the Institute of Marine Science at the University of Auckland, the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre gives you a great insight into the marine ecosystems surrounding New Zealand. There are heaps of interactive displays and a touch tank to see starfish, sea urchins and other creatures of the deep up close. Plus, it’s affordable at under NZ$10.

Location: From the Goat Island car park, follow the roads and pathways about 250m (820ft) to the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre.

5. Do the Goat Island Walkway

To stretch your legs in Goat Island, do the Goat Island Walkway which follows the cliff tops partway to Cape Rodney. You’ll get some awesome views of the Goat Island Marine Reserve, as well as a viewpoint of Little Barrier Island . The walk takes 45 minutes one way.

Location: The walk starts opposite the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre.

Tour starts by us picking you up from Auckland CBD, we head north of Auckland on one & a half hour scenic drive into the Rodney Region.

Once we arrive at Leigh harbour, we start a one-hour return coastal walk into the native bush where you will see ferns, kauri, nikau, pohutukawa and epiphytes beside the track. you might also see or hear birds include kaka, tui, warbler, fantail, cuckoo, kookaburra and kingfisher. Seabirds include seagulls, gannets, shags and white-faced heron.

After That; we will take you to the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre to learn about Goat Island’s marine life. You will also watch The tide pool tank full of marine creatures.

Then we will take you to spend about one & half hours on the beach where you can relax on the beach, swim, rent a Kayak, Clear Kayak, Snorkelling Gear or go on a glass bottom boat ride.  (extra charges  applies to  these activities)

Later then, we head back to Auckland CBD through the scenic roads of Rodney Region.

Goat island marine reserve.

This marine reserve is named after the little island (Goat Island or Motu Hawere) that sits just 100 metres off the beach and protects it from Pacific Ocean swells. The island is a nature reserve and no landing is permitted. Goat Island Beach, a short walk down the hill from the carpark, is the setting off point for diving, snorkelling, kayaking and glass bottom boat tours. Dogs are not permitted at any time. All marine life is protected in the marine reserve which means no fishing or collecting of anything – even seaweed and sea shells. This is the reason you can see so much marine life on the rocky shore and in the water. The reserve is managed by the Department of Conservation and more information about New Zealand’s marine reserves can be seen on their website.

Goat Island Walkway

You will have spectacular views from this walkway which begins from the Leigh Marine Laboratory that sits above Goat Island Beach. See more on our walks page. At low tide you can walk to Pakiri Beach. It involves walking across sand, the rocky shore and hopping across boulders to get there. On the way is a beach with pink sand and a small waterfall after rain. Allow time to return before the tide comes in or arrange transport from Pakiri Beach.

History of Goat Island

The Leigh coast has long been inhabited by Maori. The bay was known was Whakatuwhenua and the island as Motu Hawere. The coast was a prolific fish, shellfish and crayfish gathering area for local Maori.

In the 1940s, large snapper were caught from the beach, and crayfish collected from rock pools by locals. Large amounts of kelp that washed onto the beach after storms were collected to use for fertiliser. By the 1950s and 1960s the marine life had been reduced due to fishing and collecting.

A marine laboratory was established by the University of Auckland to the east of the beach in 1964. Auckland University scientists had the idea of creating a protected piece of coast so that their studies of marine life would not be affected.

New Zealand’s first marine reserve at Goat Island, officially called the Cape Rodney to Okakari Point Marine Reserve, was created in 1975 for scientific purposes. It covers 518 hectares of coastal sea.

Crayfish and snapper numbers increased once the area was protected. They fed on sea urchins, reducing their numbers and allowing the kelp forests to return. This in turn created more habitat and food for marine life, gradually returning the marine reserve to what all the coast was probably once like.

More than 100 species of fish have been recorded from the reserve. Invertebrate species that include crabs, sea stars and sea shells number in the thousands, just remember they are all protected in the reserve and cannot be collected.

Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing and bring water. You may want to purchase some gifts so bring a form of money with you, no bitcoin. At Goat Island a meal will be provided with the price of the tour. Note: Any gifts that you decide to purchase are not included in the price of this tour.

Your guide will meet you at the dock as soon as you pass through the security gate on the dock. Just go to your left, and they will be wearing a red shirt and holding a Blackwood Tours sign. You will have 30 minutes to find your guide. We ask that you exit the ship as soon as you can so nobody is waiting too long to start their tour.

Sydney Harbour National Park is open sunrise to sunset but may have to close at times due to poor weather or fire danger.

Park entry fees:

Bradleys Head: $8 per vehicle per day. North Head: $5 per vehicle per day. Tap and pay card or phone payments accepted at pay machines. Coin payment available at Fairfax carpark machines only. Chowder Bay: Monday-Friday: $3 per hour, to a maximum of $16 per day. Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays: $4 per hour, to a maximum of $20 per day. If you hold an NPWS All Parks or Multi Parks Pass, you can park free for up to four hours per day - additional time can be purchased. Car parks operated by Sydney Harbour Federation Trust or Mosman Council are not covered by your pass. Please check signs carefully. Park’nPay: You can also pay for your visit to any area via the Park’nPay app .

Other fees:

Landing fees or tour fees apply to visit Sydney Harbour islands. All public visitors to Shark, Clark or Rodd Island, need to pay a $7 per person landing fee. To arrange, please contact 1300 072 757 (13000 PARKS). Annual NSW Parks Passes do not cover landing fees.

Goat Island boasts a rich history dating back to the early pioneer days. According to legend, John Stedman, a miller, kept a herd of goats on the island. After a harsh winter of 1780, all but one goat died, leading to the island's unusual name.

Augustus Porter played a significant role in shaping the island's destiny. He saw tourism potential in Niagara Falls and paid for Goat Island in the mid-19th century. Porter allowed a bunch of Tuscarora Native Americans to live on the island and trade their handcrafted items to travelers. 

Despite the strong urge to develop the land, Augustus Porter resisted the temptation to tamper with the island's natural beauty. Instead, he chose to build a toll bridge in 1817 that allowed tourists to visit Goat Island without compromising its natural splendor.

Basil Hall, a traveler, praised the bridge as one of the most remarkable engineering feats of its period. The bridge quickly gained popularity and became a sought-after attraction in the region, attracting visitors from all corners.

Eventually, in 1885, Goat Island was included in the Niagara Reservation State Park, which happens to be the oldest state park in the United States. This addition was seen as a valuable contribution to the park's conservation efforts. Today, visitors can explore the island's rich history while appreciating its awe-inspiring natural beauty.
