public vs. private carriage tours

Public is a no dot the private is a 5 dot. We would not recommend the public carriage tours. We used to always take these, but they have become to commercial. You start out in one side carriage, then half way through they switch you to a larger carriage. However, while you are waiting for the switch, they stop at where there are stores, with the attempt to sell you more things. The one we were on last time, the people on the carriage tour were not well behaved. I know you can not blame the carriage tour for the way people behave. The grandson we had with us was disappointed because he could not hear anything the driver was saying. We felt it was a waste of our money. When we were there in June with another grandson, we took a private carriage tour. You find those carriages in front of the fort. They will take you any place you ask them, they are very knowledgeable. Our grandson, hand lots of question and our driver Rachael never lost patients with him. She was able to bring him into the conversation by asking him questions about what he was seeing. Since this was his first time to the island we ask for just an over view of the island. We took the hour tour, to go see Arch Rock would be an hour and a half tour. Since we were going to ride bikes later we knew that we could see this on our bike ride. The cost was 120.00 for the 3 of us for the hour. If you are a couple and have another couple with you, you can split the cost. The public carriage tour may be slightly cheaper, but the value of the private carriage tour is so much better. We will never take the public carriage tour again.

We have taken a couple of these tours at different locations. So much depends on your guide. The trip is broken into two parts. Our first guide did an excellent job and the tour was enjoyable and educational. Part two was through the state park without much to see but foliage. Our guide was a first timer and hadn't learned his script. Unfortunately, that made some of our fellow tourist nervous and restless. Too bad. The highlight of part two was the Arch Rock. That made up for the lack of a guide.

I've been on two carriage ride tours on Mackinaw Island - one was a carriage that took 20+ people and the other was after I was married and we had a carriage that took 2 - 6 people. Both times I was amazed on the knowledge the drivers had about the island. The smaller carriage tour was better - we were able to tour the town and learned about the different homes on the island and who they belonged to and the history of different buildings. We learned about the fort and the church... It was pretty amazing! I would defiantly go on a carriage tour again when we go back to the island. It was GREAT!

This was our first visit to Mackinaw island. We had asked a couple people on the ferry ride over what was the best way to see the island and were told to take the carriage ride. Boy, were we in for a disappointment! Despite many carriages just waiting, we had an hour wait. Our first tour guide had a terrible script to follow but he at least made it tolerable. Part way through, we had to disembark, get in another line for another carriage for the rest of the tour. The 2nd tour guide was just flat out awful in his talking points. We didn't finish the tour and instead choose to walk back to town from the fort. Everything that we saw on the carriage tour is either walkable or an easy bike ride. Save your money. The carriage ride was a total rip off!

There is a lot to talk about at Mackinac Island so I will just focus on this tour. This should be the first thing you do when you get to the island. (side note: Bring any map you have of the island with you since you will feel lost once you get off the boat) If you ask any of the numerous shop attendants where the carriage ride is located, they will all very kindly tell you that it is "right down the street". Head right. It is pretty far down and on the opposite side of the road. I had my slightly disabled Mother with me so it was a little hard on her with all the people walking on the sidewalk. Speaking of my Mom's trouble getting around, the workers on this tour were very accommodating and brought an extra step and a small platform to assist her. The tour was a little expensive but well worth the money! After you pay, they will tell you to come back 10 minutes before departure and sit on the benches nearby. You will board a 2 horse carriage with numerous bench seats (roughly big enough for 4 adults) and the driver will introduce him or herself along with the horses. The drivers are all very kind, funny, and open. (Ours was Connor) They will take you through the historic streets pointing out buildings of interest including the Grand Hotel. They are knowledgeable about the islands history and will add jokes and stories when appropriate. The carriage will end at Surrey Hill. You exit the 2 horse carriage and are advised that, when ready, to meet and board a second carriage for the second half of the tour. At this stop, there is a butterfly conservatory. It was nice and only cost a few more dollars. My 13 year old daughter enjoyed having butterflies land on her. In the big green and red barn there are old time sleighs and carriages. There is no charge to view them. Now, here is the part that you MUST MUST MUST do......eat a donut!!! Oh. My. Goodness!!!!! The first building, where the carriage dropped you off, houses the MOST INCREDIBLE DONUT you will ever eat! I purchased glazed and a cinnamon for my Mom. They were small, warm, crispy and airy. We both agreed that we needed one more! I believe it was called Aunt Mary's or Saint Mary's. I don't even like donuts but the minute you walk into the building the smell of fresh sweetness hits you and beckons you like a siren to the rocky coast! Ok, ok, enough about that! :) When you are ready, you will wait at the back of the building for a 3 horse green carriage to take you to the back half of the tour which ventures through the park areas and forests. You will get a new driver and new horses. (We had Katie) Again, the driver is funny and open and knows tons of history. It was very interesting and even held my daughter's attention. You will visit the beautiful Arch Rock. (No climbing but a great overlook) You will see the Fort and be given the option to exit the carriage and enter the fort for an additional cost (I think it was $16). As the tour winds down, you are given another option to depart the carriage and walk a short distance to the Grand. If you choose to stay on, you go back to Surrey Hill and get on a 2 horse carriage again and go back to where you started in town. The last driver doesn't do any talking but that's ok. Yes, the other drivers accept tips but they do not badger nor insist. Personally, I gave each one $2. If I could have afforded it, I would have given them more as they are very good at their job.

The whole ride was mostly about what The chambers own, rather then the island. You take a short trip up to another place were they drop you off. Push you thru a trinket shopping area, then get onto a bigger rig with three horses and take you out to arch rock, which is ok. Talking to island residents, they said that carriage tours don't own the rigs, they are owned by the 68 lease holders that get dividends for the year. We just happened to be on a tour that had a run away, were the horses bolted and they could not stop them. I felt really uneasy with that, and we had one person fell out of the carriage and had to be sent off the island to a hospital. The worst thing is all the carriages cluttering the roads and making traffic worst for tourist. And constantly be yelled at by carriage drivers to get out of there way. After checking into Mackinac Island laws, people have the right of way not the horses. But if you want a great horse and buggy ride go down to the park for the hourly tours. They give the best tour about the island, ask for Arrowhead Tours or Dale Golfs tour buggies. Those are the best tours on the island.

I visited Mackinac Island, voted the No. 1 travel destination this summer. No cars are allowed on the dreamy Midwest island.

  • Mackinac Island is in Lake Huron in Michigan and it feels like it's part of a fairy-tale.
  • The island has no cars and is filled with historic structures, sweet shops, and pretty cottages.
  • The island's Grand Hotel is famous for its fancy dinners, high tea, and formal dress codes.

Insider Today

On Wednesday, USA Today announced its No.1 Best Summer Travel Destination as part of its 10Best Readers' Choice awards for 2024. Topping the list is one of the most beautiful islands in the Midwest: Mackinac Island.

Mackinac Island — pronounced "mack-in-awe" — sits in Lake Huron, directly between Michigan's Upper and Lower peninsulas.

To get to the island, you fly into the small airport , or take a ferry from Mackinaw City and get dropped off downtown. From there, you can walk on foot, rent a bike, or take a horse-and-carriage "taxi."

Mackinac only has about 500 year-round residents , and over 1 million people visit each year . It's also home to over 500 horses because motorized vehicles have been prohibited since 1898 because they scare the horses.

Keep reading to see what it's like.

There are a few places to stay, but the historic Grand Hotel is worth a visit no matter what

Grand Hotel is one of the few remaining wood-frame hotels in the US and is a National Historic Landmark.

The property overlooks the lake, and its porch , at roughly 660 feet in length, is said to be the longest in the world.

The property, where no two rooms are decorated alike, was built by steamship and train companies in the late 19th century.

Back then, the hotel catered to the ultra-elite, wealthy guests who would spend their entire summers on-site.

In honor of the historic site's grand history, there's still a dress code after 6:30 p.m. — guests must wear a coat, tie, slacks, dress, skirt, or pantsuit in the common areas.

If you spend a night on-site, you'll have the chance to attend a spectacular three-course dinner in the grand main dining room .

Related stories

There's also a high tea in the parlor each afternoon.

There are also stables, museums, and outdoor attractions

Visitors can also check out Surrey Hill , home to attractions like the Grand Stables, where the Grand Hotel's current working horses reside.

It's also a museum with antique carriages and sleighs on display dating back hundreds of years.

Some have been previously owned by prominent figures of the 19th century, like William Vanderbilt.

Across the way is the Wings of Mackinac Butterfly Conservatory , which hosts hundreds of native and tropical butterflies.

The area also houses historic landmarks, like Fort Mackinac , the oldest building in Michigan, founded in 1780.

The cluster of military buildings sits high on a coastal bluff and is no longer active, but it still serves as a historical attraction open to the public.

You can also rent a bike and pedal around the outer rim of the island. The flat, leisurely 8.2-mile route hugs the coastline and offers gorgeous lake views .

It's also worth visiting Mackinac Island State Park, which offers miles of walking trails , woods, and the signature limestone Arch Rock formation.

The area's also known for its fudge and live music

When you're downtown, grab some famous Mackinac Island fudge at one of the sweet shops on the main street.

You can watch people make fudge, and the shops are pretty generous with samples.

It's also worth visiting the Pink Pony , one of the island's most popular restaurants , bars, and music venues with fabulous lake views from its patio.

Mackinac Island with Kids: What to Do and Where to Stay on Michigan's Idyllic Car-Free Island

W hen you tell people you’re going to Michigan’s Mackinac Island, they often get a wistful look in their eyes. Car-free for more than a century, this charming and thickly forested island (whose name is pronounced “Mackinaw”) evokes a bygone age with its Victorian homes, elegant hotels, horse-drawn carriages, and fudge. Lots and lots of fudge. With more than a dozen fudge shops, Mackinac Island is the fudge capital of the world, which might explain why it’s one of the most popular family vacation spots in the U.S. for kids (or anyone with a sweet tooth).

Surrounded by the rich blue waters of Lake Huron and the Straits of Mackinac, the tiny eight-mile island is blanketed in state park greenery. After arriving by ferry, you’ll spend your days strolling the adorable downtown, bicycling the lakeshore, and riding carriages past historic sites. Relaxing, listening to live music, playing lawn games, and drinking in the endless blue skies are popular pastimes on Mackinac Island.

But those are also just a handful of the things to do on Mackinac Island as a family. You can also kayak, mini golf, and attend special events like the annual Lilac Festival in June and the Fudge Festival every August.

MAKE MEMORIES: 50 Best Family Vacation Ideas for a Trip They’ll Never Forget

Family-Friendly Things to Do on Mackinac Island

Many families enjoy the simple pleasure of strolling the car-free streets of Mackinac Island. The island is dotted with boutiques, bookstores, restaurants, ice cream parlors, and fudge shops. The sweet lure of all that fudge and ice cream is all but impossible to resist as you listen to the clip-clop of horses through the adorable downtown. On our family vacation to Mackinac Island, my teen son thoroughly enjoyed the freedom of riding his bike around the island and to the many fudge shops.

YEAR-ROUND FAMILY FUN: 12 Best Midwest Vacations for Families

Speaking of bikes, you can easily rent bicycles and pedal around the entire island. Mackinac Island’s M-185 is the only U.S. highway where cars are banned. You’ll roll past gorgeous views of the Mackinac Island Bridge and make plenty of scenic stops along the way. You can also paddleboard or kayak the cool waters surrounding Mackinac Island if you’d rather get out on the water than on two wheels.

And if you’d rather let someone else do all the hard work of getting around, don’t miss a horse-drawn carriage ride with Mackinac Island Carriage Tours , whose Belgian draft horses will take you on an informative ride past the Grand Hotel, historic houses, parks, and stables.

Active kids and teens will enjoy climbing to Mackinac Island’s Arch Rock , a natural limestone arch over the Lake Huron shoreline where you can climb the 207 steps for a great photo opp overlooking the aquamarine waters below. Arch Rock can also be reached by horse-drawn taxi or with a tour group for those who aren’t interested in the steps.

One of the more unusual things you can do on the island is  fire the morning cannon at Fort Mackinac.  Atop a bluff over Marquette Park, a Fort Mackinac soldier will help those over age 13 blast a wakeup call to the island. You can then tour the fort and explore the historical exhibits.

Over at Mackinac Island Butterfly House and Insect World , you can enjoy the experience of live butterflies fluttering all around you in a warm, indoor tropical garden. Kids delight in seeing the different shapes, colors, and varieties, and bug lovers of all ages will appreciate the displays of insects from around the world.

HIT THE ROAD: 11 Best Family Road Trip Ideas in the U.S.

Play a round of putt-putt at the  Greens of Mackinac at Mission Point Resort . This 18-hole mini golf course features real bent grass greens and serene views of the Straits of Mackinac. Grab a drink at Bistro on the Greens and swing for a hole in one. Glow golf lights up evening play with glow-in-the-dark golf balls.

Hop aboard a  Sip N’ Sail sunset cruise  to listen to live music as you sip a drink and sail past the Mackinac Island Bridge. The captain often allows passengers to take the wheel and steer. (While children under age four are free, this trip might be best enjoyed as adults-only.)

Where to Stay on Mackinac Island

There are no chain hotels on Mackinac Island. The famous  Grand Hotel  might be the most storied accommodations on the island. Considered one of the best family resorts in the U.S. , this large and luxurious hotel can boast that no two rooms are decorated alike. The only dog-friendly resort on the is Mission Point Resort , also known for its attractive grounds dotted with white Adirondack chairs overlooking the Straits of Mackinac. It’s a storybook location with many weddings held on-site. The heated outdoor pool and hot tubs make it fun to swim even on cool days, and the complimentary kids club gives parents a chance to reconnect while kids get their energy out. Farm-to-ferry dining can be savored al fresco or inside with sweeping views.

Family-Friendly Dining on Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island is peppered with casual to fine dining restaurants and sweet shops. Let’s start with dessert since Mackinac Island is all about the fudge and ice cream. There are 13 fudge shops on Mackinac Island. Joann’s Fudge , Murdick’s Fudge , and Ryba’s Fudge are the main outlets where you’ll find fudge being folded on marble tables. (“Folding cools it down, making it less grainy,” the folks at Joann’s Fudge explained to me.)

Ice cream is also a big deal on Mackinac Island. After all, what summer vacation is complete without lapping up a creamy treat from a waffle cone? The salted caramel ice cream from Moomers  was so magnificent that the four members of my family all had to share that flavor.

Round Island Kitchen  at Mission Point Resort makes the most delicious smoked whitefish dip with warm, buttered crostini.  Bistro on the Green  serves up sensational views next to a picturesque mini golf course while you enjoy Mediterranean-inspired dishes and indulgent chocolate mousse, often to the tune of live music. Pick up a picnic basket from the boutique at Mission Point and picnic on the lawn or at Marquette Park.

The iconic Pink Pony  is a downtown bar that’s been named one of America’s best outdoor dining spots. Breakfast, sandwiches, salads, and soups can be enjoyed on the balcony overlooking the harbor.

How to Get to Mackinac Island

Reaching Mackinac Island is an experience in and of itself. Since it’s a car-free island, most people arrive by ferry. Board  Shepler’s Ferry  from Mackinaw City or St. Ignace and you’ll soon arrive to the sound of clip-clopping horse hooves on Main Street. From the ferry docks, your luggage can be transferred to your hotel while you stroll past fudge and ice cream shops to your destination, sweet treat in-hand.

Mackinac Island in Michigan named No. 1 ‘Best Summer Travel Destination' by USA Today

It's the second year in a row the "car-free" island has won the award, by francie swidler • published may 23, 2024 • updated on may 23, 2024 at 1:37 pm.

The No. 1 best summer travel destination is in the Midwest, according to a new list.

Mackinac Island , in Lake Huron, between Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsula has been voted the "No. 1 Best Summer Travel Destination" in USA Today's "10Best" Readers' Choice awards for 2024.

Watch NBC 5 Chicago news stream free, 24/7, wherever you are

According to editors, the list was curated by an "expert panel" that selected their "must-see places for a summer vacation."

After that, readers voted on their favorites to determine the top 10 winners.

"Between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas, you’ll find Mackinac Island, where you’ll ride on horse-drawn carriages along car-free roads, observe fudge being made (and then sample it), and tour the historic Fort Mackinac," the Island's No. 1 entry reads. "This Lake Huron-based continental island is also home to Mackinac Island State Park, where you can hike, bike, kayak, and take photos of the local natural beauty, including the stunning limestone Arch Rock."

According to a spokesperson, it's the second year in a row the destination has earned the top spot.

“Earning this top honor for the second year in a row demonstrates just how special of a place Mackinac Island is to many people,” Mackinac Island Mayor Margaret Doud said in a statement. “I want to thank our island community for their unwavering commitment in creating unforgettable experiences for our guests and extend my gratitude to the all the individuals near and far who voted for Mackinac Island.”

"It's hard to beat Wisconsin’s Door County, home to 300 miles of shoreline along Lake Michigan and every water sport you can imagine," the entry for Door County reads. "Paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, water skiing, and even scuba diving around shipwrecks are all among the aquatic activities available throughout this Midwestern destination."
