The Top 10 Tourist Attractions In Cambodia That You Have To See
As it slowly recovers from the Khmer Rouge’s reign of terror, Cambodia is becoming a rising tourist destination. The stunning temples of Angkor are the obvious draw for most visitors, but the country has plenty more to offer including tropical beaches, colonial buildings, and an abundance of natural attractions. Here is a look at what to see in Cambodia.
Anglor Wat Temple
By far the top Cambodian tourist attraction, Angkor was the Khmer Empire’s capital city, which flourished between the 9th and the 15th centuries. Today, the city is in picturesque ruins, nestled amid forests and farmland near Siem Reap .
Over 1,000 temples are located here ranging in size from piles of rubble in the rice fields to the magnificent Angkor Wat , which rises over three tiers to a height of 669 feet and is the world’s largest single religious monument; it inspires and mesmerizes all who visit. Arrive before dawn to catch the sunrise over this magnificent structure. The entire architectural complex has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Stone Monkey Statue
2. Banteay Srei
Considered by many to be the jewel in the crown of Angkorian art, and sometimes known as the “Art gallery of Angkor”, Banteay Srei is a 10th century Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. The temple is cut from stone of a pinkish hue and includes some of the finest stone carving anywhere on earth.
Begun in 967 CE, it is one of the smallest sites at Angkor, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in stature. It is wonderfully well preserved, and many of its carvings are three-dimensional.
Koh Ker Temple
Koh Ker is a remote archeological site in northern Cambodia about 75 miles away from the city of Siem Reap. It was one of the most significant settlements during the Khmer rule and briefly served as the capital of the Khmer Empire. Some magnificent monuments were constructed here. The predominant one being Prasat Thom, a superb pyramid that rises 98 feet into the air.
Unlike the temples of Angkor Wat, the temples of Koh Ker are dispersed within dense forests with little human population in and around the site. Many of the temples are hidden under dense overgrowth or are too dangerous to be accessed because of the presence of landmines in the area.
Irrawaddy Dolphin
Kratié is a quiet former French colonial market town in eastern Cambodia, standing on the banks of the Mekong River . Its marketplace is still at its core, surrounded by French colonial structures. The town is famous for being home to the Irrawaddy Dolphins . Increasingly an endangered species, these incredible creatures have lived here for centuries and have a symbiotic relationship with the local fishermen, helping them to trap fish. It is estimated that there are only about 80 dolphins left here.
5. Bokor Hill Station
In the early 1920s, the Bokor Hill Station, located on Bokor Mountain in the Preah Monivong National Park, was a popular luxury summer retreat for French colonists wishing to escape the oppressive heat of Phnom Penh . It was abandoned in the 1940s because of the Japanese invasion and again in the 1970s during Pol Pot’s violent Khmer Rouge Regime.
Nowadays, it is a ghost town but most of the buildings are still standing. It features several French colonial buildings including a royal residence, church, casino, and hotel. Its strategic importance is underlined by the fact that the Cambodian authorities still maintain a ranger station on the site.
Silver Pagoda
6. The Silver Pagoda
Known by the official name of Wat Ubosoth Ratanaram, the Silver Pagoda stands within the grounds of the Royal Palace in the heart of Phnom Penh. It takes its name from the 5000 silver tiles which cover its floor. It houses two of the most important statues of Buddha in the country, the 17th century crystal Buddha and a life-sized Maitreya Buddha, encrusted with 9584 diamonds.
The interior walls of the pagoda courtyard are decorated with a mural of the Ramayana myth which was painted by 40 Khmer artists in between 1903 and 1904. The Silver Pagoda currently serves not only as a tourist attraction, but its grounds are also being used for various royal and national ceremonies.
Tonle Sap Shores and Boats
7. Tonlé Sap
Tonlé Sap refers to a wetland area comprising the seasonally inundated freshwater lake of Tonlé Sap and the 75-mile-long Tonlé Sap River, both of which are part of the vast floodplain of the Mekong River. The lake has the distinction of making a dramatic transformation every year. In the dry season it has a maximum depth of just three feet and an area of around 1,000 square miles.
However, when the monsoon rains come it swells dramatically to a depth of 30 feet and a total area of 6,200 square miles. The Tonle Sap River changes the direction of its flow twice a year due to the seasonal effect of this sheer volume of water. The lake is home to floating villages, the Mekong giant catfish, which is one of the world’s largest freshwater fish, and a significant population of several reptile species including many species of freshwater snakes.
A large number of migratory birds visit the lake including the spot-billed pelican, the greater adjutant, Bengal florican, and the grey-headed fish eagle, among others. Due to its ecological significance, the region has been designated as a biodiversity hotspot and has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1997.
8. Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville is a coastal Cambodian city and the country’s number one beach resort. An almost uninterrupted stretch of sweeping white sand beaches, crystal clear seas and coastal marshlands, with a unique biodiversity, have been the reason behind the transformation of this once-quiet fishing port into a major seaside resort in recent years. Many new hotels have been built as the area grows to keep up with the tourism demands. The Ou Trojak Jet is the only navigable river in Sihanoukville.
9. Preah Vihear
Of all the Khmer temples, this one, situated upon a 1722-foot-high cliff in the Dângrêk Mountains in the province of Preah Vihear, commands the best location. This beautiful temple offers the most spectacular view over the adjacent countryside. The Preah Vihear was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.
10. Siem Reap
Siem Reap is the capital city of Cambodia’s Siem Reap Province and serves as the gateway to the Angkor Wat. The city also has attractions of its own including colonial and Chinese-style buildings; museums, including Angkor National Museum and the Cambodia Landmine Museum; cultural villages, traditional handicraft shops, silk farms, and more. The Apsara traditional dance performances, and Phare − the Cambodian Circus, are also popular attractions for tourists visiting Siem Reap.

10 Best Places to Visit in Cambodia
By Carl Austin · Last updated on February 5, 2024
Travelers who are bored with the beaches of Thailand or the natural sights of Vietnam may be up for more ancient ruins viewing. In this case, Cambodia can satisfy these urges. While the larger cities are rapidly modernizing, a visit to the famous site of Angkor offers a chance to see temples unrivaled in scale and grandeur in southeast Asia.
Among the best places to visit in Cambodia are also some smaller towns and villages that provide a chance to experience a more traditional way of life, including treks into the jungle and to see even more fascinating ancient ruins.
10. Kep [SEE MAP]
Kep is a small sea-side resort that offers a variety of beach activities. Snorkelers can enjoy viewing the corals on the bottom of the shallow sea. Rabbit Island is a popular beach near Kep; conditions are rustic, however, with electricity being provided only a few hours in the evening. Most people visit the island on day trips.
Kep was founded as a colonial retreat for the French elite in 1908 and the town is still full of ruined shells of old villas, destroyed in the Khmer Rouge days. Visitors can also take in panoramic ocean views at Kep National Park, visit a butterfly preserve or see how peppers are grown organically.
9. Banlung [SEE MAP]
Banlung in northern Cambodia makes a great destination for travelers who enjoy being outdoors. Several tour companies overnight or multi-day trips into the jungles allowing adventuresome travelers to get up close and personal with nature.
They offer visitors the opportunity to view a variety of monkeys and other wildlife, though some visitors don’t appreciate getting that close to leeches. A sorter trips to Yeak Laom Volcanic Lake offers the opportunity to see deep lakes as well as see Cambodian women doing traditional weaving.
8. Battambang [SEE MAP]
Battambang is Cambodia’s second most populous city, and is especially popular with visitors interested in Cambodian history. Established as a trading center in the 18th century, Battambang later became part of French Indochina, with some colonial buildings still in existence.
The town has many Angkor-style temples and Buddhist shrines. It is easy to get around by foot or bicycle. Statues, mostly of animals and gods, can be found in most public places, the most famous of which is an ancient Khmer king that is located on the road to Phnom Penh. The Central Market also is worth a visit.
7. Kampot [SEE MAP]
Located on a river not too far from the Gulf of Thailand is more famous for its peppers than for tourists, though it is gaining more tourists all the time. Kampot’s black peppercorns are famous with gourmet cooks around the world because of their unique flavor.
Kampot is the gateway to Bokor National Park, famed for its abandoned French hill station, pleasant climate and lush primary rainforest. Kampot also offers visitors the opportunity to go boating and rafting on the river that winds through town, as well as take in scenic waterfalls along the route. The Kampot Kompong Trach caves offer spelunkers the chance to see ancient ruins. Crab curry is a popular local dish.
6. Kratie [SEE MAP]
Kratie is a small town located on the banks of the Mekong River and is dominated by a central marketplace surrounded by old, French colonial buildings. There’s no large scale tourism, but plenty of backpackers pour through here during the peak season.

5. Sihanoukville [SEE MAP]
Named after a former king, Norodom Sihanouk, Sihanoukville is the most popular Cambodian beach resort on the Gulf of Thailand. Also known as Kompong Saom, Sihanoukville is where the United States fought its last battle in the Vietnam War.
This southern Cambodia city offers both sandy and rocky beaches. Though none of Sihanoukville’s beaches would qualify as southeast Asia’s finest it is one of best places to visit in Cambodia after visiting all the Khmer and other attractions in the rest of the country. The beaches are popular with a variety of travelers from backpackers who stay in huts on the beach to those who prefer the luxury of five-star hotels. Snorkeling is popular on some of the offshore islands.
If water activities are not your thing, you can always rent a motor bike and check out the jungles surrounding Sihanoukville. And if you have the time, take a ride to pretty and pristine Ream National Park, which is an easy day trip from Sihanoukville and home to more than 200 different bird species.
4. Siem Reap [SEE MAP]
Siem Reap (literally “Siam Defeated”) is undoubtedly Cambodia’s fastest growing city and serves as a small charming gateway town to the world famous destination of the Angkor temples. Thanks to those Cambodia attractions, Siem Reap has transformed itself into a major tourist hub.
It is laid-back and a pleasant place to stay while touring the temples. Siem Reap offers a wide range of hotels, ranging from several 5-star hotels to hundreds of budget guesthouses while a large selection of restaurants offer many kinds of food.

In this short time some very spectacular buildings and immense sculptures were constructed. The site is dominated by Prasat Thom, a 30 meter (98 ft) tall temple pyramid rising high above the surrounding jungle.
Left to the jungle for nearly a millennium, Koh Ker was one of Cambodia’s most remote and inaccessible temple destinations. This has now changed thanks to recent de-mining and the opening of a new toll road.
2. Phnom Penh [SEE MAP]
Phnom Penh, the largest city is Cambodia, has been its capital since French colonial days. Once known as “the pearl of Asia,” Phnom Penh is considered one of the prettiest of the cities the French built in Indochina though the city is still recovering from war and revolution. The night market or Phsar Reatrey is a good place to pick up handcrafted items and souvenirs.
Of course, there are also more somber sites in Phnom Penh that recount the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime, including the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the infamous Killing Fields of Choeung Ek. There are 129 mass graves in the Killing Fields and its memorial stupa contains the skulls of more than 8,000 people who were murdered at this site.
1. Angkor [SEE MAP]
Angkor served as the capital of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 14th centuries. As such, it is filled with historic treasures, making it one of the most significant archaeological sites in Southeast Asia.

Many of the temples at Angkor have been restored, making the huge palace one of the wonders of the ancient world while offering an outstanding look of Khmer history.
During it’s long history Angkor went through many changes in religion converting between Hinduism to Buddhism several times. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is one of the prime tourist attractions in Southeast Asia.

- The Top 10 Tourist Attractions In Cambodia
Cambodia is a small country located in the Indochina Peninsula's southern portion in Southeast Asia. The country is bordered by Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos. It also has a coastline along the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest. Cambodia has a well- developed tourism industry as tourism is one of the most important sectors of the country's economy. The country has a rich and inspiring history evident by the presence of magnificent temples and other structures from the past empires that ruled the region. Cambodia is also famous for natural attractions and unique biodiversity. Below is a sampling of ten of the most visited attractions in the country.
10. Siem Reap
Siem Reap is the capital city of Cambodia’s Siem Reap Province. The city is visited by millions of tourists each year as it serves as the gateway to the Angkor Wat. The city also has attractions of its own including colonial and Chinese-style buildings, museums, cultural villages, traditional handicraft shops, silk farms, and more. The Apsara traditional dance performances are also a popular attraction for tourists visiting Siem Reap. Siem Reap hosts a number of resorts, hotels, and restaurants to accommodate the large numbers of tourists visiting the city throughout the year.
9. Preah Vihear Temple
The Preah Vihear Temple is another temple tracing its origins to the Khmer Empire. The beautiful temple is located on a 525- meter tall cliff in the Dângrêk Mountains in the province of Preah Vihear. The temple offers the most spectacular view among all the temples built during the Khmer rule in Cambodia. The Preah Vihear was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on July 7, 2008.
8. Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville is a coastal Cambodian city and the capital of the country’s Sihanoukville Province. The city’s coast borders the Gulf of Thailand. The city is famous for its almost uninterrupted stretch of beaches and the coastal marshlands with its unique biodiversity. The Ou Trojak Jet is the only navigable river in Sihanoukville. The city is a relatively young one in the history of Cambodia as it developed in parallel with the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port construction. Currently, it is a leading center of commerce and industry in the country. The city is also popular among tourists who enjoy the beaches and islands of the city. It is steadily developing into the country’s premier beach destination.
7. Tonlé Sap
Tonlé Sap refers to a wetland area comprising of the Tonlé Sap Lake, a seasonally inundated freshwater lake, and a 120 km long river, the Tonlé Sap River. The Tonlé Sap is thus a part of the vast floodplain of the Mekong River. The water volume of the lake varies significantly throughout the year. The lake and the river support diverse inter-connected ecoregions and a great amount of biodiversity. At least 149 fish species including 11 threatened species are housed here. A large number of migratory birds also visit the wetland. Some of the most notable birds seen here include the spot-billed pelican, the greater adjutant, Bengal florican, the grey-headed fish eagle, etc. The Tonlé Sap also hosts a significant population of several reptile species including many species of freshwater snakes. The Mekong giant catfish, one of the world’s largest freshwater fish, lives in the Tonlé Sap. Due to its ecological significance, the region has been designated as a biodiversity hotspot and a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1997.
6. Silver Pagoda
Known by the official name of Wat Ubosoth Ratanaram, the Silver Pagoda is located on the Royal Palace’s south side. The pagoda houses magnificent statues of Buddha. Among the statues, the most famous one is a small, green crystal Buddha statue and a life-size gold statue of the Maitreya Buddha. The latter weighs around 90 kg and is decorated with 9584 diamonds. The Silver Pagoda is also inlaid with over 5,000 silver tiles and Italian marble structures on its outer facade. The Silver Pagoda currently serves not only as a tourist attraction but also its grounds are being used for various royal and national ceremonies of the country.
5. Bokor Hill Station
The Bokor Hill Station was once a popular hill station for French colonists in Cambodia. The hill station is located at the top of the Bokor Mountain in the Preah Monivong National Park. It is now a ghost town that is popular amongst tourists, as it features several French colonial buildings including a royal residence, church, casino, and hotel. In the early 1920s, the French colonists would enjoy the hill station as a luxury summer retreat. Today, modern buildings have come up in the region and several films like the City of Ghosts (2002) and the R-Point (2004) have been filmed here.
Kratié is a small town located in eastern Cambodia and is the capital of the Kratié Province of the country. The town houses a population of about 38, 215 people and is located on the banks of the Mekong River. Many people visit this quiet and peaceful Cambodian city to enjoy its scenic beauty and unique culture. The central marketplace of the city is surrounded by French colonial structures. Big islands with white sand beaches are located on the Mekong flowing by the town. If one is lucky, one can get a rare sighting of the critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphins in the Mekong River near Kratié .
For the more adventurous tourists visiting Cambodia, Koh Ker is a perfect choice. Unlike the temples of Angkor Wat, the temples of Koh Ker are dispersed within dense forests with little human population in and around the site. Koh Ker is a remote archeological site in northern Cambodia about 120 km away from the city of Siem Reap. Of the many monuments present here, only about two dozen are visited by tourists. The rest of the temples are hidden under dense overgrowth or are too dangerous to be accessed because of the presence of land mines in the area. Koh Ker was one of the most significant settlements during the Khmer rule. It briefly served as the capital of the Khmer Empire during the rule of the kings Jayavarman IV and Harshavarman II. Jayavarman IV contributed the most towards the development of the site and had a water tank and 40 temples constructed here during his rule. The Koh Ker has been a part of the UNESCO tentative world heritage list since 1992.
2. Banteay Srei
The Banteay Srei is a Cambodian temple that is often praised as the "jewel of Khmer art.” It is extremely popular among tourists who visit the site to marvel at its beauty. The Banteay Srei is a temple of the 10th century that is located near the Phnom Dei hills in the Angkor area. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, a Hindu god. Built of red sandstone, the building is elaborately carved.
Angkor was the Khmer Empire’s capital city that flourished between the 9th and the 15th centuries. During its peak in 1010 to 1220, Angkor was a megacity that supported 0.1% of the global population. Today, the city is in ruins but is most famous for the grand Hindu temple complex of the Angkor Wat. The picturesque ruins of Angkor are nestled amid forests and farmland near the Siem Reap city of Cambodia. Over 1,000 temples are located here ranging in size from piles of rubble amidst the rice fields to the magnificent Angor Wat, the world’s largest single religious monument. The entire architectural complex has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is visited by millions of tourists each year.

Vibrant, bustling Phnom Penh is the heartbeat of Cambodia. This sprawling capital, spread out beside the banks of both the Tonlé Sap and Mekong Rivers, is a city of wide central boulevards and skinny back alleys, where modern and old collide.
The Royal Palace complex is the city's top attraction but for anyone interested in exploring Cambodia's 20th-century history, Phnom Penh is also a vital stop, for it is home to two of the country's most sobering places to visit.
The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and Tuol Sleng Museum (the prison of S-21) both provide an insight into the reign of terror this nation suffered under Khmer Rouge rule.
Travelers heading out to Cambodia's premier tourist attraction of Angkor Wat also benefit hugely from a stop in the capital, as the wonderful National Museum of Angkor is here.
For more ideas on your sightseeing options, read our list of the top attractions and things to do in Phnom Penh.

The highlight of Phnom Penh is the beautiful Royal Palace - the seat and residence of Cambodia's royal family since the 1860s.
The spired-roof pavilions of the complex are an excellent example of classic Khmer architecture.
Both the Throne Hall area and the Silver Pagoda - set within manicured gardens - are open to the public for visiting. The Throne Hall was built in 1917, replacing an earlier wooden structure.
The Silver Pagoda is famed for being the home of the Emerald Buddha statue and a mammoth 90-kilogram Gold Buddha statue studded with thousands of diamonds.
The Silver Pagoda escaped the brutal destruction of the Khmer Rouge reign and so still contains some beautiful artifacts. The interior ceiling mural depicts the Cambodian epic poem, the Reamker , which is based on the story of the Indian Ramayana.
Address: Sothearos Boulevard, Phnom Penh
The traditional Khmer building that houses the national collection was built in 1920.
Inside, the dazzling array of ancient Khmer artistry, with more than 1,800 objects on display, is a must visit for anyone with an interest in Cambodian history.
The major highlights of the museum galleries are the Vishnu head excavated near the vast temple complex of Angkor Wat; the incredible Angkorian collection , with statues from the temples of Koh Ker and Angkor Thom; and the large exhibit of pre-Angkorian artifacts that trace Cambodia's Funan and Chenla periods.
Address: Street 13, Phnom Penh

The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek are a somber reminder of the terror of the Khmer Rouge whose brutal regime, intending to turn Cambodia into a socialist agrarian society, ruled the country between 1975 and early 1979.
In under four years, it's estimated that between one and three million Cambodians were killed under Pol Pot's authoritarian command.
Many perished because of famine and disease, but also hundreds of thousands of Cambodians – intellectuals, educated people such as teachers and doctors, regime opponents, and simply anyone suspected of being an opponent – were murdered.
Here at Choeung Ek, it's estimated that 17,000 people met their death. The victims here came from S-21, the Khmer Rouge's high-security prison that is now Tuol Sleng Museum.
There are 129 mass graves here, 86 that have been excavated, exhuming the remains of 8,985 people. At the center of the area is a memorial stupa that contains more than 8,000 skulls.
A visit here is an entirely sobering experience that will aid in your understanding of this tumultuous period in Cambodia's modern history. Choeung Ek lies off Monireth Boulevard.
If you want to truly understand what happened here and the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime, The Killing Field and Toul Sleng Genocide Museum (S21) Tour can help. During this tour, a driver will pick you up and drive you to the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center, 14 kilometers away south of Phnom Penh, where you'll spend two hours exploring the former orchard that became the site of the mass graves. You'll then head back to the city and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, set inside the former high school turned high-security prison.
It was here, in the Khmer Rouge's Security Prison S-21 that some of the regime's worst torture atrocities were carried out. More than 17,000 people passed through these gates between 1975 and 1978, accused of betraying the revolution in some way.
Nearly all prisoners brought here were once themselves members of the Khmer Rouge who were turned on during one of the regime's many internal purges.
The visiting experience is made ever more visceral by the displayed photographic evidence hanging on the walls of the sparse cells next to empty beds. S-21 was exceedingly well-managed by Comrade Duch (the head of the prison) who made sure that extensive records were kept. As the prison was hastily abandoned when the Vietnamese took Phnom Penh in 1979, the detailed notes and photographs have survived.
Address: Street 113, Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh is a riverine town, and one of the most relaxing ways to go sightseeing in the city is to take to the water. There are regular sunset cruise tourist boat departures from the riverfront between 5pm and 7.30pm, which head along the Tonlé Sap and Mekong Rivers.
Alternatively, you can also hire a private boat nearby to head out on the water at any time of the day (you'll want to put your bargaining hat on though, if you'd like to hire a private boat).
This is a great way to get away from the bustling motorbike-clogged streets for an hour and soak up the gentler pace of local river life.
Address: Tourist Boat Dock, Sisowath Quay, Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh is decidedly flat. The only rise in the landscape here is the 27-meter-high hillock that is home to the temple of Wat Phnom.
The first religious building on this spot is thought to have been constructed in the 14th century and has been rebuilt several times, with the current main temple sanctuary dating from 1926.
This is one of the city's most important Buddhist temples and is often bustling with locals leaving offerings here and praying at the various shrines that surround the main sanctuary.
Address: Norodom Boulevard, Phnom Penh
The most important temple complex in Cambodia, Wat Ounalom is the headquarters of Buddhism in the country. A stupa within the complex contains one of the Buddha's eyebrow hairs.
The wat was first situated here in 1443 and although it suffered considerable damage during the Khmer Rouge era, with many of its statues and religious iconography destroyed, it is thriving again today.
Of particular note for visitors is a beautiful Buddha statue in the main building's third floor that has been reassembled after being smashed to pieces by the Khmer Rouge and a statue commemorating Huot Tat, the fourth patriarch, who was murdered by Pol Pot, on the 2nd Floor.
Phnom Penh's chaotic and lively Russian Market hums with local life, and produces some great shopping opportunities as well.
You'll find everything here from tacky souvenirs (much made in neighboring Thailand rather than locally produced) to beautifully-made local wooden handicrafts and Cambodian silks, along with bundles of stalls selling exceedingly cheap clothing.
This is not the place to come for some midday browsing, as temperatures skyrocket within the market, so aim for an early morning visit. The market opens for business at 6am.
This is also just the place to put your haggling hat on and try out your bargaining skills.
The market's real name is Psar Tuol Tom Pong , but earned its moniker due to the number of Russian foreign residents of Phnom Penh who used to shop here.
Address: Street 155, Phnom Penh
The distinctive domed building that holds the central Psar Thmei market was built in 1937 in Art Deco style and dominates Phnom Penh's central city. There are excellent opportunities for soaking up a slice of local life here with the market's huge array of local produce on display and plenty of hustle and bustle.
Everything is sold here, from fresh fruit and vegetables to jewelry and clothing, and the market is abuzz with energy from early in the morning to early evening.
It's a great place for an aimless wander, and keen photographers will find plenty of colorful scenes to capture.
Address: Street 126, Phnom Penh
The patch of grass that intersects Sihanouk and Norodom Boulevards is home to Phnom Penh's Independence Monument, built to celebrate Cambodia's independence from French colonial rule in 1953. The sandstone structure represents an Angkorian temple, intricately decorated with nagas (multi-headed snakes).
As well as commemorating the nation's independence, the monument is now also a memorial to Cambodia's war-dead.
Just a short stroll from the monument is the green stretch of Wat Botum Park where you'll find the Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument , built in 1979 after Vietnamese forces had defeated the Khmer Rouge.
Address: Sihanouk Boulevard, Phnom Penh
Traditional Khmer classical dance originated in the royal courts and wasn't introduced to the general public until the mid-1900s.
Today, a number of theatrical performances can be seen in Broadway-like shows around Cambodia, where costumed dancers recreate epic poems and legends through elaborate moves.
If you're in Phnom Phen, a great way to see this first hand is to join the Experience Cambodian Living Arts, Dance Show tour.
The tour starts at the National Museum of Phnom Penh, where you'll be able to discover the gardens and see stunning examples of Khmer art and architecture. The tour then continues on to a dinner theater, where you'll experience dining while enjoying a Cambodian traditional dance and music performance on stage.
Sisowath Quay is Phnom Penh's most popular promenading spot and is always busy at sunset with walkers and joggers.
This riverside strip, rimmed with palm trees, stretches north for three kilometers from the Royal Palace. It's a great spot for watching and taking photographs of boats on the Tonle Sap River.
There are cafés, as well as street stalls selling food dotted along the route as well, so it's a popular spot for simply hanging out, particularly in the early evening.
A stroll here is easy to combine in a sightseeing itinerary between visits to the Royal Palace and Wat Phnom, just west of the quay's northern end.
Koh Dach and Koh Oknha Tei (both more commonly referred to as Silk Island by foreign visitors) are two Mekong River islands linked together by a bridge, sitting about 10 kilometers north of the central city.
The islands are known by their "Silk Island" moniker due to the large community of silk weavers who live on Koh Dach and Koh Oknha Tei. It's normal for visitors here to be invited into local workshops to watch weavers at work and look at the silk products they're selling.
Both islands make a good option for a day trip. There's not a huge amount to do here, but it's a tranquil rural break within easy reach of the big city. The easiest way to get around on the island if you want to explore them fully is to rent a cycle.
Ferries leave regularly to both Koh Dach and Koh Oknha Tei from three separate ferry stops on the river banks opposite the islands. Some tour boat operators in Phnom Penh also offer tours here.
In Oudong, 43 kilometers north from central Phnom Penh, the stupas and temples atop the hill of Phnom Preah Reach Throap are well worth a trip from town, particularly if you want to enjoy some excellent vistas from the hill top, across the surrounding countryside.
The large temple of Vihear Preah Ath Roes with its 20-meter-high Buddha is the hill top's main attraction.
Other temples and stupas here range in age from the 17th century to the modern era. Some of the buildings with the most interesting intricate facade decorations include the Ang Doung stupa built by King Norodom and the Mak Proum stupa built by King Monivong.
About 70 kilometers south of central Phnom Penh, the temple of Phnom Chisor sits on the 133-meter-high hilltop of Chisor mountain. The brick temple was built by the Angkorian Empire KIng Suryavarman I and is dedicated to the Hindu gods Vishnu and Shiva. It dates from the 11th century.
The staircases to get up to the temple are quite an effort if it's hot, but the sprawling views of the surrounding landscape below with its patchwork of lush green farming plots and rice fields between trees, are well worth it.
Most people hire a private driver or take a tour to come here, as there's no direct transport. Try to get here early to beat the heat.
We recommend these great-value hotels and guesthouses in Phnom Penh, near the top attractions in town:
- La Rose Suites : This luxury boutique hotel has a fantastic location and offers four-poster beds, beautiful pools, and complimentary massage.
- iRoHa Garden Hotel & Resort : With mid-range pricing, welcoming staff, a peaceful setting in the embassy district, and lovely pool, it's hard to beat this hotel.
- G Mekong Hotel : Affordable rates, helpful staff, comfortable rooms and a rooftop pool are some of the main attractions of this property.
- Angkor International Hotel : This centrally located budget hotel features large air-conditioned rooms with comfortable beds.
While other Southeast Asian countries experience slightly cooler seasons at some point of the year, Cambodia is hot all year long.
Because of this, the best time to visit Phnom Penh and Cambodia in general is during the dry season, which runs from November to January. While temperatures won't actually be much lower during these months, humidity drops considerably, making the weather more bearable.
This also means lots of people choose these months to visit, so prices go up and you are unlikely to find any discounts on airfares, hotels, or package tours.
If costs are an issue, consider arriving during the hot season, which runs from February until mid-May.
With temperatures in the high 30s and very high humidity, these aren't great months to tour the temples of Angkor Wat and nearby Siem Reap , but things are not as bad in the capital city - just make sure your hotel has a pool and organize your outdoor excursions for the early morning or the evenings.
Heavy southwest monsoon rains hit Phnom Penh from May to October, with the strongest storms happening in August and September.
In the city, this can mean flooding and lots of mosquitoes but also lots of beautiful thick greenery, dramatic electric storms, and a concert of geckos singing well into the night. This is the cheapest time of the year to visit and a great time to see the real Phnom Penh without masses of tourists around.
The Phnom Penh Airport is just 10 kilometers from the city center - a distance that could take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes to cover, depending on your choice of transportation and how bad the infamous Cambodian traffic jams are that day.
For time efficiency, the best choice is the shuttle run by the Royal Railway Cambodia, which runs straight from the airport to the Phnom Penh Railway Station, right in the city center; the trip takes half an hour with no stops.
You can also catch public bus number 3 at the airport, which runs every 15 minutes and takes you all the way to the Night Market in the center of the city. The ride takes about an hour, and the bus makes about 20 stops, so you could always get off at a different place if it's more convenient to get to your hotel.
If the weather cooperates (and you don't arrive during a heavy downpour in the rainy season), a tuk-tuk might be your best option, as it will drop you off right at your hotel's door. Tuk-tuks are open taxis that charge flat rates - how much you'll pay for the ride to the city center depends on your negotiation skills, so be ready to discuss prices. There are always tuk-tuks parked just outside the arrival area of the airport waiting for passengers.

Natural Wonders of Cambodia
Explore Cambodia Guides
Published on December 9, 2022
The Southeast Asian kingdom of Cambodia is a magical combination of ancient tradition and modern culture. This lush nation, located on the Indochinese Peninsula, is a must-visit for nature lovers because of its biodiversity and mesmerizing national forests and islands. The 181,000 square kilometers of Cambodia are crisscrossed with sinuous rivers, vast swathes of fertile land, and impressive mountain ranges, all of which are home to some of the world’s best natural wonders.
Here are five of the most incredible natural wonders and attractions in Cambodia.
Phnom Kulen National Park
The waterfall at Phnom Kulen National Park | Visit Southeast Asia
Named after the mountain range in which it resides, Phnom Kulen National Park is sacred land. This area is where King Jayavarman II, founder of the Khmer Empire—which later became Cambodia—had himself crowned King of Kings. Located 48 miles from Siem Reap, the second-largest city in the country, Phnom Kulen is relatively easy to access by car. This 373-square-kilometer mountainous park is home to temples, caves, waterfalls, rivers, and statues, attractions that make it a must-visit destination.
Some of the best places to see within Phnom Kulen National Park are Srah Damrei—otherwise known as the Elephant Pond—for its off-road collection of stone-carved animal statues and the park’s two waterfalls, which are popular places to picnic. Fun fact: the taller waterfall in the park makes a brief appearance in the 2001 action film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider . Film appearances aside, visitors should also make time to trek along the River of a Thousand Lingas, a series of carved tributes to the Hindu god Shiva located alongside the actual Kbal Spean river.
Phnom Kulen National Park is part jungle, part land filled with ancient temples and ruins, natural beauty, and sacred history. Make sure to head to this mystical location for a sense of Cambodia’s founding and some of its most ancient history. This is a natural wonder of Cambodia that you won’t want to miss!
Battambang Bat Caves
Battambang Bat Caves | Visit Southeast Asia
Every night without fail, millions of bats burst from the Battambang Caves to fly off into the sunset. One of Cambodia’s most unique and incredible sights, the Battambang bats are sure to impress even the most jaded nature lovers. Located at the base of the limestone cliffs of Phnom Sampeau are the streets where visitors gather to see the spectacle of bats. Braver tourists can also hire guides to bring them up hidden paths to the mouth of the bat caves. (Some even believe these bats represent the lost souls of the victims of the Khmer Rouge’s genocide.)
There are so many bats residing in the caves that the mass exodus can take up to 30 or even 40 minutes, and it usually begins around 5:30 pm. This magnificent sight is one of the fascinating natural wonders of Cambodia; Phnom Sampeau and the bat caves are a short 12 kilometers outside of Battambang’s town center, making it an easy drive if you visit Battambang.
Bou Sra Waterfall
Bou Sra Waterfall | Visit Southeast Asia
Bou Sra Waterfall—also known as Bousra and Busra—is considered one of the best tourist attractions in Cambodia. Located in the sparsely populated eastern province of Mondulkiri, Bou Sra is almost at the country’s border with Vietnam. This scenic waterfall is the highlight of the Bou Sra Eco Park, a preservation site for local flora and fauna and home to an ethnic village called Pichinda. The waterfall is known for its three stages, which vary in height and speed; each stage is about 15-20 meters high.
The park also offers two zip lines over the waterfall, with lengths of 100 and 300 meters. Whether visitors view the waterfall from above or from one of many viewing stations, they will be impressed by the triple-tier plunge and sheer breadth of the natural attraction. The road to the waterfall is relatively challenging due to its rural location, but the journey there is well worth it.
Preah Monivong National Park
Preah Monivong National Park | Visit Southeast Asia
Home to evergreen rainforests and many endangered species, Preah Monivong National Park—also known as Bokor National Park for Bokor Mountain, its highest point—is 1,423 square kilometers of pristinely preserved land in the southeastern corner of Cambodia. Located within the Dâmrei Mountains, or ‘Elephant Mountains,’ this elevated park is one of only two ASEAN Heritage Parks in Cambodia. This area is popular among locals and tourists alike, who flock here for its incredible nature and historic sites.
The most famous attraction within the park is the Bokor Hill Station, an abandoned resort settlement built by French colonialists in the 1920s. It also includes a Catholic church, an exceedingly rare sight in a country that is about 97% Buddhist. Preah Monivong is known for much more than just Bokor Hill, though—it is home to countless endangered species, including Asian elephants, tigers, macaques, sun bears, pangolins, and much more, including over 300 species of birds.

Tourism in Cambodia is big business. But why is tourism so important here and how should it be managed? Read on to find out…
Cambodia, with its profound history and enigmatic landscapes, is a magnet for travellers seeking both heritage and nature. From the awe-inspiring temples of Angkor Wat to the untouched beaches of Sihanoukville, the country showcases a rich tapestry of experiences. In this article, I will explore the myriad facets of Cambodia’s tourism sector, illuminating its diverse attractions and cultural depth.
Geography of Cambodia
Cambodia is a Southeast Asian country located in the southern part of the Indochinese Peninsula. It shares borders with Thailand to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Vietnam to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest. Here is a brief overview of Cambodia’s geography :
- Landforms: Cambodia’s terrain is characterized by low-lying plains, river valleys, and a central plain known as the Cambodian Plain or the Central Lowlands. The Mekong River, one of Southeast Asia’s major waterways, flows through the eastern part of the country, providing fertile soil and playing a crucial role in Cambodia’s agriculture.
- Cardamom Mountains: In the southwestern part of Cambodia lies the Cardamom Mountains, a range that stretches parallel to the Gulf of Thailand. These mountains are covered with dense forests and are home to various wildlife species, including endangered ones like tigers and Asian elephants.
- Densely Forested Areas: Large parts of Cambodia are covered by forests, particularly in the northern and eastern regions. These forests are rich in biodiversity, with diverse flora and fauna, including rare species like the giant ibis and the Asian black bear.
- Tonle Sap Lake: In the central part of the country, there is the Tonle Sap, which is Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake. It is unique because its flow changes direction depending on the season. During the rainy season, the lake expands significantly, while during the dry season, it drains into the Mekong River.
- Coastal Areas: Along Cambodia’s southern coastline, there are sandy beaches and several offshore islands in the Gulf of Thailand. Popular tourist destinations like Sihanoukville and Kep are located in this region, attracting visitors with their beautiful beaches and tropical landscapes.
- Climate: Cambodia has a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct seasons. The rainy season usually lasts from May to October, characterized by high humidity and frequent rainfall. The dry season runs from November to April and brings drier and cooler weather.
Overall, Cambodia’s geography offers a diverse landscape, ranging from fertile plains to mountainous regions and coastal areas. This diversity contributes to the country’s natural beauty, rich biodiversity, and varied agricultural resources.

Impacts of Tourism in Cambodia
Tourism in Cambodia has emerged as a significant economic sector in the country, contributing to the country’s development and providing numerous employment opportunities. However, like any tourism destination, Cambodia experiences a range of impacts associated with the industry. This paper delves into the social, environmental, and economic consequences of tourism in Cambodia, shedding light on the overall effects on the nation.
Social Impacts of tourism in Cambodia
Positive Impacts:
Cultural Exchange and Preservation: Tourism in Cambodia facilitates cultural exchange between visitors and local communities, fostering an appreciation for Cambodia’s rich heritage. This interaction often leads to the preservation and promotion of traditional arts, crafts, and cultural practices.
Employment Opportunities: Tourism in Cambodia generates employment opportunities, particularly in the hospitality and service sectors, offering local residents income and improved livelihoods.
Negative Impacts:
Social Disruption: Rapid tourism growth can cause social disruption by altering the dynamics and values of local communities. The influx of tourists may lead to changes in traditional lifestyles, increased competition for resources, and social inequalities.
Exploitation and Cultural Appropriation: Unregulated tourism in Cambodia can lead to the commodification of culture and exploitation of local communities. Cultural appropriation and misrepresentation may occur, diluting authentic cultural experiences.
Environmental Impacts of tourism in Cambodia
Positive Impacts:
Conservation Efforts: Tourism in Cambodia can provide incentives for the conservation of natural resources and protected areas. Revenue generated from ecotourism initiatives can be reinvested in environmental preservation efforts, contributing to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
Environmental Awareness: Visitors to Cambodia often gain a deeper understanding of environmental challenges, leading to increased awareness and support for conservation initiatives.
Negative Impacts:
Overexploitation of Resources: Uncontrolled tourism in Cambodia can strain local ecosystems, resulting in habitat destruction, deforestation, and pollution. Overconsumption of water, energy, and waste generation can degrade natural resources and disrupt fragile ecosystems.

Foreign Exchange Earnings: Tourism generates foreign exchange through visitor expenditures, which contributes to the balance of payments and helps strengthen the national economy.
Leakages and Dependency: Leakage occurs when a significant portion of tourism revenue leaves the host country, benefiting foreign investors rather than the local economy. Overdependence on tourism can make the economy vulnerable to fluctuations in the industry.

These New Airports Are Making Bucket-List Destinations More Accessible
T he most difficult leg of a trip—especially on long international journeys —is making that last flight connection or lengthy ground transfer to your final destination. Those final couple hours in transit, when the effects of jet lag are rearing up and patience is running thin, can be laborious and time-consuming, but are often necessary in order to reach some of the world's most remote destinations .
Now, a new crop of well-located airports seek to make some of these historically out-of-the-way regions more accessible to international travel. Forget about the shuttle bus or puddle-jumper flight: these eight new airports—which have either just opened or are currently under construction–will make it that much easier than ever to reach bucket-list destinations around the world.
Tulum, Mexico
Thanks to the new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, it is easier than ever for international travelers to reach the seaside escape of Tulum , one of Mexico's most popular tourist hubs. The airport officially opened to domestic flights in December 2023 and will welcome international airlines beginning March 28, 2024. Multiple routes from American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, JetBlue, and Spirit will launch throughout the year. Previously, travelers would typically need to fly into Cancún and drive about 80 miles south to access Tulum, a two-hour road trip that the new facility will mercifully eliminate for many passengers.
Siem Reap, Cambodia
In November 2023, Cambodia inaugurated a brand new airport in Siem Reap , the gateway city to Angkor Wat, the UNESCO-listed ancient temple complex that’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. The new airport, which replaces an older Siem Reap facility built in the 1930s, is about 25 miles east of the Angkor Wat temple complex. That’s further away from the archeological site than the original airport, which sat just over three miles away, but the new airport will make it easier for more tourists to access Angkor Wat . Thanks to its size, it can handle larger planes used on nonstop international flights and accommodate up to seven million passengers annually, with plans to grow that capacity to a whopping 40 million people per year by 2040.
Amalfi Coast, Italy
Starting this summer, visiting the candy-colored buildings perched high above the azure waters of the Amalfi Coast will be less of a headache for travelers. That's because the popular tourist spot in Southern Italy is finally getting its own commercial airport. The town is converting what used to be a military airport, and later a private airport, to a facility to be used by everyday travelers. The first flights are set to take off on July 11 and will be operated by Spanish airline Volotea, with routes from Nantes, France, and Cagliri, Sardinia , according to CNN . However, the complete renovation is not scheduled to be complete until 2026, and other airlines and routes will be added along the way.
Nuuk, Greenland
In one of the country’s most significant moves to enhance tourism , Greenland is debuting a major expansion of the airport in its capital city, Nuuk. The new airport’s runway will be double the size of the old one—big enough to handle nonstop flights from destinations in North America and Europe . That means much more simplified travel for international visitors, who would previously have to transit through the small town of Kangerlussuaq. The new terminal building is expected to be operational by May 2024, with the full facility up and running by the end of November.
The “Nature Island” of the Caribbean— Dominica —started construction on its first international airport in late 2023. It’s set to be one of the island’s largest construction projects ever. When it’s completed by 2026, the new airport will replace the current regional facility that has just three gates. By contrast, the international airport is slated to serve more than 20 airlines from the Caribbean, Europe, and North America, each of which will be able to fly directly to Dominica, the country’s prime minister said in 2022 , making it easier for far-flung tourists to access the island without needing to make a connection.
Dominica is one of our Best Places to Go in North America & the Caribbean in 2024 , part of our global guide to the Best Places to Go in 2024 —find more travel inspiration here .
Western Sydney, Australia
A second airport in Australia’s capital is set to bring a host of advantages when it starts operations in 2026. The Western Sydney airport, also called Nancy-Bird Walton airport, is currently being constructed further inland from Sydney's current airport. For locals who live farther on the outskirts, that means not having to trek all the way into eastern Sydney to catch your flight. For visitors, the airport’s location on the western edge of the city will be an ideal gateway for travelers wanting to explore the nearby Blue Mountains National Park , known for its striking cliffs, waterfalls, and unique sandstone formations. Plus, it could mean less crowded airport spaces, too. The facility on the opposite side of the city will also take some capacity pressure off of the current Sydney airport: Western Sydney airport will be able to handle 10 million passengers a year when it launches.
Peru's Sacred Valley
For the more than 1.5 million travelers who visit Machu Picchu every year, a simpler transit option will be available starting in 2026: Chinchero airport, located smack dab in Peru’s Sacred Valley. Currently, international visitors to Machu Picchu usually must fly into Lima and connect to Cusco, which doesn’t accommodate many international flights and sits about 46 miles away from the archaeological site. They then must take a train the rest of the way. Chinchero airport will be able to serve nonstop flights from North America and major cities throughout South America and act as a direct gateway to Machu Picchu. The project is not without its controversies , however. Critics of the Chinchero airport say its construction is endangering ancient Incan archaeological sites, as activists voice concerns that the noise pollution from the planes and subsequent traffic will cause irreparable damage to the fragile environment.
Gelephu Mindfulness City, Bhutan
The Himalayan Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan has announced it’s building a second international airport as part of an ambitious project to create a brand new modern city from scratch. The sustainable community, called Gelephu Mindfulness City , will see the construction of a new 1,000-square-kilometer economic and tourist hub near the current town of Gelephu, which sits on the country’s southwestern border with India . In addition to the new international airport, the large city will feature a new university, spiritual and cultural centers, and healthcare facilities. Although there is not yet a set date for the completion of the airport, when it opens it will be an important new option for tourists wishing to explore the southern and western regions of Bhutan, home to attractions like Royal Manas National Park and Phrumsengla National Park.
