A Day Trip to Capri from Rome: Tips and Suggestions

All you need to know to plan a day trip to Capri from Rome

A Day Trip to Capri from Rome: Tips and Suggestions

If you are staying in Rome and would like to take a day trip to Capri , the first thing to keep in mind is that travel times between Rome and Capri are quite long, so the time you have remaining to enjoy the island if traveling from Rome to Capri and back in one day will be quite limited. We suggest you consider staying for at least one night on Capri or in Naples to be able to enjoy the island to the fullest. That said, with careful planning you an also enjoy a quick jaunt to the island even from Rome.

Please note: In the high season months of July and August, the island is very hot and crowded. We do not recommend attempting a day trip during this season, as you may find that you spend most of your time waiting in long lines for attractions and transportation. Either opt for a day trip in a quieter season, avoiding the high-season crowds, or plan to spend at least one night on Capri. If you do decide to take a day trip to the island in high season, the best option to make the most of your time is to book an organized tour from Rome, like the one-day tour that departs directly from the Termini train station.

Getting from Rome to Capri

Decide on an itinerary before you set off from Rome, keeping in mind that you won't be able to see everything on the island in just one day. Try to depart as early as possible in the morning, and opt for the fastest possible transportation option. The fastest public transportation to reach Capri from Rome is the high-speed train that runs from the Termini station in Rome to the central train station in Naples in about an hour and 15 minutes. Naples has high-speed ferries to Capri that depart from the Molo Beverello pier and arrive in Marina Grande on Capri in about 50 minutes. To get from the train station in Naples to the Molo Beverello pier, the fastest option is the taxi (about EUR15 for the 10-minute ride).

What to See and Do in One Day on Capri

Here's a suggested itinerary for a day trip to Capri departing from Rome :

830: arrive in Naples and take the ferry to Capri

9:30 - 11:30: boat tour of the island and/or visit the Blue Grotto

1130 - 3:00: visit Anacapri and a quick lunch

3:00 - 5:00: visit the historic center of Capri and shopping

6:00: Return to Naples and then to Rome

9:30 - Capri by Sea

After arriving at the port of Marina Grande , spend your first hours on Capri taking a boat ride around the island, choosing between a trip circling the entire coast or one that stops at the Blue Grotto . There are a number of different boat companies at the port that offer boat tours, perfect for admiring the beautiful coastline of Capri from the water. Otherwise, you can spend a few hours on the beach at Marina Grande or head straight to Anacapri by taxi or public bus along the spectacular scenic road along the water's edge (known as the "Mamma Mia Road").

Boat Tour with a Stop at the Blue Grotto Duration : about 2 hours Please Note: in June, July, and August, the line to enter the Blue Grotto can stretch into the hours, so the best strategy is to arrive first thing in the morning. The Grotto opens at 9AM, and the line begins forming shortly after, so try to be waiting at the entrance as soon as it opens to ensure you'll have time to visit!

11:30 - 13:00: Anacapri

capri day tour from rome

Get off the bus near the cemetery or the post office and explore the historic center of Anacapri at your own pace, enjoying the cobbled streets, flower-covered houses, and the beautiful churches of Santa Sofia and San Michele. Take a break with a quick lunch featuring the island's traditional street food (a "panino caprese" with mozzarella, tomato, and basil; or a slice of pizza and torta caprese chocolate and almond cake) and continue on to Piazza Vittoria. Here you can choose to take the chair lift up to the top of Mount Solaro to take in the splendid view over the entire island and Bay of Naples, or continue on foot to Villa San Michele , the former residence of the Swedish physician Axel Munthe. The villa is set along a scenic lane overlooking the Marina Grande port and Sorrentine Peninsula.

Website: Villa San Michele

3:00 - 5:00: Capri, The Piazzetta, and The Faraglioni

capri day tour from rome

From Piazza Vittoria, take a bus or taxi back to Capri town and take in the chic and bustling Piazzetta , home to the Cattedrale di Santo Stefano and clock tower. Stop here for a coffee or gelato, or wander along Via Camerelle, the island's "most luxurious street" lined with designer boutiques and high-end hotels. You can spend the rest of your visit shopping, strolling through the Gardens of Augustus , or walking out to the Tragara scenic overlook. The latter two options both offer breathtaking views over the famous Faraglioni , Capri's famous sea stacks that tower over the waters just offshore.

To end your day trip to Capri and return to Rome , go back to the Marina Grande port by taking the funicular down from the Piazzetta and the ferry back to Naples.

This 9-hour tour highlights the highs and lows of the Roman Empire, taking you on a historic path that gives insight into how people lived centuries ago here.

Start off in the morning by being picked up at your hotel by a luxury coach driven by your tour guide who speaks multiple languages to accommodate everybody.

The coach itself is quite comfortable, with padded seating and large windows for viewing the Italian landscapes as you drive to Pompeii. This private day trip is designed exclusively around your group, so feel free to ask any questions you may have!

Once you arrive to Pompeii, you’ll see Mt. Vesuvius looming overhead – the volcano which was the reason this Roman town now has not a soul to speak of residing in it.

Learn how the tons of ashes that rained down on the town managed to perfectly preserve its victims, art, and buildings. This makes for a great archaeological site, but also gives visitors an accurate look into how they spent their lives and followed certain traditions.

After wandering the streets through former houses, markets, and various pieces of art, you’ll stop for lunch right on the slopes of Vesuvius. Next, take a scenic journey to Naples, where you’ll also have plenty of time to sightsee on your own.

Pass through Piazza Garibaldi, marvel at the Ovo Castle, the legendary Castel Nuovo, or the Naples National Archaeological Museum. Don’t forget to take some time strolling around the Riviera di Chiaia promenade and take in that fresh sea air!

Naples is known for its amazing food (it’s the birthplace of pizza!), rich culture, tons of impressive churches, and ultimately for being one of the most unchanged city centers in all of Europe.

Your driver will take you to the top of Vomeri hill for beautiful vistas over the entire bay and see Mount Vesuvius looming over it all. Head towards the active volcano, arriving in the once-buried, active archaeological site of Pompeii.

Sightseeing in Capri

Located in Italy’s Bay of Naples, Capri is known for its “thousand faces”, where you can walk the winding trails on the cliffsides above the Mediterranean sea. Its incredible stretch of coastline is covered in enormous, glitzy villas, making it a destination for celebrities and artists, alike. Made entirely of limestone, the island dates all the way back to the prehistoric age!

They say that Capri was first “discovered’ by Emperor Augustus, where he ended up living and building many temples, villas, and gardens to create his own version of paradise. However, archaeologists have found ample proof that the island was inhabited centuries before the Roman Empire even existed – all the way back to the Stone Age!

The earliest mythiacl residents were the Teleboi from Acarnania, and it’s said that Capri used to consist of two towns and later reduced to one. Tiberius also spent the last years of his life there, building 12 villas – the most famous of which being the Villa Jovis (you can still see the ruins today).

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Naples once again began ruling Capri. Due to this, there were many attacks on the island, and was eventually given to the commune of Amalfi. In 1806, French troops under Napoleon took control of the island, and just a few years later, was restored to Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies. In the 19th century, it became a popular artist and celebrity destination, and has been that way ever since.

Sightseeing in Sorrento

This charming little coastal town faces the Bay of Naples, sitting on dramatic cliffs to offer sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Due to its natural and man-made beauty, it’s become a very popular resort town with a small-town feel that will enamor anyone. Known for its juicy and flavorful Sorrentine lemons, high-quality ceramics, lace and marquetry, there’s plenty to do and see here.

Likely of Greek origin, Sorrento was once a Roman resort, becoming part of the Norma kingdom of Sicily in 1137. However, from the 8th century BC, there were already various indigenous villages all over the place. You can still see the oldest ruins of Oscan, which date back to around 600 BC!

Thanks to Sorrento’s naturally deep gorges, it was very well-protected from attacks. There are still many ruins in the villa quarter right ot the east of the actual town, though one of the largest sites is now where the Hotel Vitotria sits.

Located under the Hotel Sirena there are interesting finds like a rock-made tunnel, and by Capo di Sorrento there’s another villa called the “Bagni della Regina Giovanna”.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Sorrento was ruled by the Ostrogoths and later turned into an autonomous duchy in the 9th century. There were frequent confilcts between Amalfi, the Saracens, and Lombardic duchies.

The latter of which besieged Sorrento. In 1035 it was acquired by Guaimar IV of Salerno, and eventually was annexed to the Kingdom of Sicily. After much back-and-forth, it was officially annexed to the new Kingdom of Italy in 1861.

The flavors are nothing spectacular. Definitely, you could suggest another place. Another opportunity for improvement is the guides, they met their objectives, they took us and guided everything super punctually, but I think they could have more enthusiasm 8 Jose Ermilo

Writers, artists and intellectuals from across the ages have fallen in love with the history, nature, hospitality and culture of Capri . Now it's your turn to discover the myths and legends surrounding the island and its Blue Grotto , an incomparable experience.

Capri Day Trip

We'll meet next to the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri or we'll pick you up at your hotel in Rome, as you prefer. We'll then head south via the road nicknamed the 'Sun Motorway', driving through the  Italian countryside and past the area of communes known as Castelli Romani , historically a favourite retreat for ancient Roman noblemen. Halfway through the journey, you'll see the great Benedictine Monte Cassino Abbey , the site of one the most important battles of the Second World War.

Having arrived in   Naples, you'll board a ferry  for the 45-minute journey to Marina Grande, Capri's famous port.

You'll then be on your way to the  breathtaking Blue Grotto , one of the most beautiful natural places on earth. It's said that the cave flooded millions of years ago, blocking out the sun's rays. What little light that does enter the cave does so in a way that the water is illuminated in an enchanting blue colour.

Next up, we'll head down to  Capri  itself, where you'll have  free time  to catch lunch at a nearby restaurant and explore the most important town on the island at your own pace. Here, you can visit the Piazzetta, buy local products and souvenirs, and take unforgettable photos.

Returning to Naples, you can admire the view of the splendid  Maschio Angioino , a 12th-century fortress also known as Castel Nuovo, of the  Certosa di San Martino former monastery complex and of the  Royal Palace .

The tour will finish back in the centre of Rome, after 14 hours.

When you make your reservation you can choose the tour with pickup . In this case, pickup is included from 6 am at the main hotels in the centre of Rome that have a 24-hour reception.

If you're staying in apartments or bed and breakfasts you should choose the tour without pickup and at 6:45 am head directly to the meeting point located in front of the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri.

Do you prefer to be on your own in Capri? The self-guided tour  includes only the return ferry tickets so that you can explore Capri on your own the rest of the time. This option also starts in front of the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri.

Partial Changes

If the weather conditions don't allow us to visit the Blue Grotto, we'll replace the visit with the impressive Faraglioni rocks. If the weather conditions don't allow the boat trip, a land tour of the island will be made.

Traveler Reviews

I was able to take some beautiful pics on Capri. The ocean and scenery are gorgeous! I would go again, but not with this tour. Average is a good way to describe it. We did one to Tuscany the day before with a different tour company and it knocked our socks off! So we had a good comparison. Bus tour guide - friendly but didn’t share much knowledge about the area. Island tour guide - he did make sure we were together and no one was missing, but other than that, “0”. Lunch - below par. Everyone at our table was dissatisfied. There seemed to be many different places to eat there, this one was not worth it. The service was 1 ⭐️, and the food was 2 ⭐️. We took a boat around the island which was good and saw the beautiful grottos. But we were not told in advance we would not be able to go through the blue grotto. Not enough time. The island was beautiful. The tour was disappointing.

I was not the most pleased with this tour… the guides were excellent but it was such a long day of travel for like a hot minute in Capri. When we got to Naples, we were passed off to Valentina who was just the sweetest and so helpful.. but then there was another 50 minute ride on a ferry to Capri. When we got to Capri, Valentina ushered us to the Funicula (spelling?) to go up to a high end shopping area. When we were in line, we asked when we’d be able to go to the Blue Grotto and we’re promptly told it was “impossible” in the amount of time we had??? We were perfectly on time so that was super frustrating. It was honestly the only reason we had picked this tour over going to Pompeii. But if we hadn’t asked we wouldn’t have even known that the Blue Grotto was off the table.. we would have just kept waiting for that part of the tour. So anyways we get to the shopping area which was nothing special and not what we would have chosen to do. We then followed Valentina into like the middle of nowhere for a pretty gross lunch. We ended up bailing at that point and went back down to find a reasonable shopping area, better food, and a beach. I really wish there just would have been more communication about our options once we got there. Another person on our tour had bailed as soon as we got to Capri and just booked a private tour and did her own thing for lunch and I wish we would have done the same. Also - don’t bring kids on this trip! It is SUCH A LONG DAY. Like literally 8-9 hours on a bus/ferry for 3 hours on Capri. A family was with us and while their kids were great on the way there, the same cannot be said about the way back and I honestly couldn’t even blame the kids for being OVER IT. But it still was not ideal to have kids screaming and kicking my seat and running up and down the bus isle the whole ride back. Do yourself and your kids a favor and don’t put them on an 8 hour bus day haha

When we arrived on Capri, we chose to take a boat ride around the island. It was stunning and gave a great perspective. This was not part of the tour and something we chose to do when we got there. Loved it! We did lunch on our own. Skipped going inside the blue grotto because lines were too long and the boat ride around the island showed us more.

There was no guided tour, so don’t expect that if you sign up for this. Once you get to Capri they give you options to do different things, and all are a separate cost. Didn’t have lunch until after 2pm and pretty much you can just walk around on your own. Not worth the 8 hours of travel for the day. Disappointed and this should be advertised differently.

absolutely amazing, more than what we were expecting. places they took us we didn't expect to do as much as we did

Cristina is an amazing guide. She made our trip much better than it was. Very knowledgeable of the Roman and Italian history, she pointed at every landmark taking us on a trip to the past. She is also friendly and approachable. Our Capri guide, Pino is a bit quiet but very efficient and has a charming dry sense of humor. He took very good care of the group, including a drunk lady that was part of it. The meal, though was bad. As simple as that. It was a restaurant called LA PIGNA. Rice was half cooked, cold and the so called “calamari” were like the hairs on the calamari leg. The pork looked pale and it was like an unappealing thin brown leaf. Everything - pasta included was tasteless and it seemed that all the meal was cooked many hours before served. We were rushed and pushed to finish quickly. I think the agency should seriously consider to change their lunch provider or risk to lose business because of the poor quality and lacking service of that place. The island is beautiful. I recommend to take the boat ride around it. It has amazing views!!

Capri is a must see island! The ride to the island was very choppy but worth it. You get very nice views, when we went it was raining but still worth it

Lovely trip. If you want to see the Blue Grotto I suggest you visit the island by yourself and reach the island at the crack of dawn . We M Missed out on the blue grotto due to the high tide. We instead settled for a trip around the island and that was spectacular and so was the chairlift . The lunch however wasn’t that great. Over all a great experience

The Capri guide Pino was unpolite calling out “Indian Time” for being delayed by 8 mins. And was rushing us through the tour. Apart from him the other guide Silvia was excellent and very kind.
