‘Hamilton’ int’l tour cast shares what makes the American musical universal

Manila is finally in the room where it happens as “Hamilton” kicks off its international tour

History has its eyes on Manila right now as the hit American rap musical “Hamilton” has finally made its international premiere in the city.

Six months after the viral two-second video teaser of “Hamilton” creator Lin Manuel Miranda saying, “What’s up, dude, pare” was posted, the musical has officially opened, featuring a touring cast with members from various US runs, the West End, and the recent Australia run.

The cast also includes Filipina singer-actress Rachelle Ann Go , who notably appeared in the West End productions of “Les Miserables,” “Miss Saigon,” and “Hamilton,” where she played Eliza Schuyler. She is reprising the role for the Manila run.

Asked about her feelings on reprising the role, this time back in her home country, Go shared: “This is a dream come true for me. I was actually telling some of my friends that back in 2017, when I did this role in the West End, I had a feeling that ‘Hamilton’ would be going to the Philippines. For some reason, I had that vision. And I told myself, ‘I’m gonna do this role in the Philippines.’ And here I am, doing it in front of our kababayans, and it’s such a dream come true.”

“We first started talking about launching an international tour of ‘Hamilton’ not long after the show premiered on Broadway,” Michael Cassel, CEO of the Michael Cassel Group and producer of the “Hamilton” international tour, said during a press conference. “And when I shared the idea with Jeffrey (Seller, producer of “Hamilton” on Broadway) that this would make a wonderful tour to share with audiences around the world, he asked me, ‘Michael, where will we start the show?’ I said, ‘The only place to start an international tour would be the Philippines.’”

Manila is currently thriving with a great number of local theater productions, as well as local stagings of Broadway hits. Various international tours of musicals have also made their stops in the country—most recently “The Sound of Music” and “We Will Rock You.” Suffice it to say that Filipinos are a receptive audience for musical theater.

You may also like: September and October productions for every kind of theater-goer

“Hamilton” has gained a global following because of how it has creatively utilized musical genres that are unconventional for musical theater—using hip-hop, rap, and R&B to tell the story of America’s forgotten founding father as well as its road to independence. It is also notable in that it features a diverse, color-blind cast mix, where it is possible to see Black Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, and even Filipinos, portray people who were historically white.

“The only place to start an international tour would be the Philippines,” says “Hamilton” international tour producer Michael Cassel

Darnell Abraham, who plays the role of George Washington for the international tour, shares: “I remember our first preview performance here, and I was really moved because I looked across the stage and I had this thought, this must be heaven on Earth. Just to see everyone representing a unique culture and background.”

While the musical’s story revolves around the history and politics of the United States, the cast emphasizes how it is also—perhaps even more importantly—a reflection of the universal human experience and connection.

“I think with this show, the call is that even as flawed humans, we can still do something. The beauty of this musical is that it is so universal. It’s about the human experience, about human flaws… but being able to do something that will be relevant,” says Akina Edmonds, who plays Angelica Schuyler in this run.

“You see the best and worst of people, that people who have done great things have also done bad things. That’s part of the human experience. And that’s what makes [‘Hamilton’] an international show,” Jason Arrow, who plays the titular role Alexander Hamilton, adds.

Despite the popularity of “Hamilton” in the country, the cast jokingly remarked at how “polite” Filipino audiences are that prompted Rachelle Ann Go to explain that “Filipinos… wait until the end of the number to applaud”

Asked about the importance of “Hamilton”’s story to Asian audiences, Arrow, who also originally played Alexander Hamilton in the Australian run, says: “I thought [about] the same thing when they announced the show was coming to Australia. I didn’t know how the show would go anywhere but America. But what we found in Australia is that… the politics of it is just a vehicle for very human stories. That’s the main focus. And more and more I realize that politics has very little to do with it. The nationality doesn’t necessarily matter, what matters is the human connection.”

There has long been a clamor for the musical to be brought to the Philippines, and finally, Pinoy Hamilfans’ prayers have been answered. The multi-awarded historical hip-hop musical will be running at The Theatre at Solaire until November.

Despite the palpable popularity of “Hamilton” in the country, the cast jokingly remarked at how “polite” Filipino audiences are. Go explains, “Filipinos are very polite. I heard some (cast members) ask, ‘Are they enjoying it?’ And I have to explain to them that Filipinos… wait until the end of the number to applaud, which is amazing. I was watching everyone, and they’re really into it. They’re absorbing every single word, every single scene. Just to see their faces in awe makes my heart jump. As a Filipino, seeing my kababayans enjoy and have fun is amazing.”

HAMILTON in MANILA! (A Review) + Guide

hamilton international tour instagram

Hamilton, one of the most inspiring musicals of all time, finally opens in Manila! This Asian premiere is the only stop in Asia on the international tour before heading to Abu Dhabi. The musical tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of the United States, and the American Revolution and politics after the war.

I still remember watching my first musical, Miss Saigon on Broadway with my family, starring Lea Salonga. This time, I wanted to make sure my boys got inspired by Hamilton, with Rachelle Ann Go performing as Eliza. It’s a great musical about building your legacy, standing for what you believe in, and not throwing away your shot with the opportunities given to you. Related blog post: Hamilton Musical Review (Disney+ Movie vs. Theatre Version)

The first part of the play was rough, with some performances being tentative and actors just standing up and singing the songs like a concert. This was the second show in Manila after the opening the previous Sunday. The second act was more engaged, with lively rap battles focused on politics, betrayal, and redemption. We were crying at the end, thanks to Eliza.

The boys loved the first act, which was all about the American Revolution, but the younger ones got lost in the politics part. It’s best for teenagers, who can better understand the story, the songs, and the message of not throwing away their shot.

The entire performance ended with a standing ovation. Thank you to  @gmg.productions  and  @solaireresort  for bringing Hamilton to Manila!

Don’t miss your shot in watching Hamilton in Manila.

FINAL THOUGHTS

hamilton international tour instagram

Hamilton is our favorite musical, and it has become our theme song for our entrepreneurial journey, which began when I quit my day job to pave the way for the content creator ecosystem in Manila.

I cried at the end of the show because it made me think about who would tell our story, what our legacy in Manila would be, and how our boys and readers would remember the Our Awesome Planet journey.

As we enter the next phase of our entrepreneurial journey, I am determined not to throw away my shot at expanding our projects and raising the next generation of Filipino Gen Zs.

Hi, how did you get your e-tickets printed like that?

They can print it for you for Php50 per transaction

If you brought your own water tumbler, I assume you also have to leave it outside with your name on it?

Yes, you have to leave it. (or hide in your bag?)

Thanks for this, sure helped us when we went. My comments:

1. I didn’t experience the lack of energy or emotion that you mentioned amongst the performers. They must have hit their stride and gained confidence as we watched a week after you. Most of them nailed it, with some of them having uncanny similar voices & accents as the original cast. (King George, Alex Ham). The sole underwhelming performer for me was Lafayette/Jefferson but then who can match up with Daveed Diggs?

2. I realized that revolutionaries are chick boys by nature, given they are in their prime, smart and in combat, plus women really throw themselves at them. Rizal, Luna brothers are no different from Hamilton et al. ha ha ha ha

3. Overall this was an extremely satisfying, enjoyable and educational experience. The 46 song, 3.5 hr performance was extreme value for money.

Thank you for this comment! Wow, this is a good feedback and glad everything was good. Chickboys nga ang mga revolutionaryos…

Good morning, your blogs are very helpful, thank you so much for that.

We are planning to watch Hamilton, does your seats Orchestra Left have still the best view? Does it have a huge TV in the room for those who seats far from the stage? Tia 😊

Orchestra left is good and you can see most of it even from the aisle side.

I did not see any TV. Best to bring binoculars to see the facial expression.

Hi! Can you take selfies before the show?

Yes, Definitely!

Our tickets are for October pa! Can’t wait! Question – if we go to solaire now can we buy merch? Or is merch only available for people who are seeing the show?

Jane Seymour’s Former English Manor Lists for $15.8 Million

By Katie Schultz

An ancient English manor with a celebrity pedigree just hit the market with an asking price of $15.8 million (£12.5 million), Mansion Global reports. British actor Jane Seymour owned—and carefully restored—the 11-bedroom and seven-bathroom countryside dwelling from the mid-1980s until 2007. The abode, known as St. Catherine’s Court, is located near Bath, England.

The 18,987-square-foot home dates back at least as far as 1591 and features elements of both Tudor - and early- Jacobean -style. It’s a protected historic monument, as are its gardens. Also featured on the grounds of the 14-acre estate are its namesake church, a tithe barn, a five-bedroom lodge, a three-bedroom cottage, horse stables, and an orangery.

An aerial view of St. Catherine’s Court.

The Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman star lent out the space to several alt-rock bands in the ’90s; Radiohead recorded their Grammy-winning album OK Computer there, as did The Cure for their album Wild Mood Swings , and the group New Order recorded part of their 2005 album Waiting for the Sirens’ Call there. English singer-songwriter Robbie Williams rented the property in the 2000s and really must’ve taken a shine to it, as he presented the manor as his own dwelling on the first episode of MTV Cribs (he later apologized for the misleading claim).

Intricately carved plaster ceilings, stone-mullioned leaded glass windows, oak floors, coffered ceilings, and large fireplaces are among the home’s grand historic details.

“What I love about St. Catherine’s is that you can live here and pretend you’re a farmer, and you never need to get out of your jeans and boots, which is how we usually live here,” Seymour told AD during a 1991 tour of the residence. “Or you can be extremely grand and dress up for dinner in another part of the house.” The Wedding Crashers actor told AD that she ate in the wood-paneled dining room by candlelight every night. The fireplace-warmed room has since been wired for electricity, but the same ornate floor candelabras remain.

How Leo Skepi Promises to Unlock Your Core Confidence

By Kate Lindsay

Image may contain Accessories Jewelry Necklace Face Head Person Photography Portrait Adult Body Part and Finger

Leo Skepi is not a therapist, and he wouldn’t describe himself as a self-help guru, either. Instead, the 26-year-old creator thinks of himself as the realest person in your group chat—the one who cuts through everyone else’s platitudes to say that you might just be full of shit.

Skepi has “an unorthodox take on all things self-development,” as he puts it, mixed “with a little bit of entertainment.”

When Skepi started on TikTok in 2021, he was not planning to become an inspirational speaker. He was just sharing his thoughts on life and found an audience that he resonated with. Not long after, he launched the podcast Aware and Aggravated . Altogether, he has over 4 million followers.

“Being insecure is actually hurtful to other people,” he advises in a typical video . “You’re not going to feel better by withholding love.”

“In Leo we trust!!!” replied one commenter, using the slogan that also provides the name of Skepi’s summer tour. In Leo We Trust , which Skepi describes as a live, interactive version of his podcast, kicked off on May 4 in Massachusetts, and has the creator making 19 other stops throughout the US this summer. (He's appearing at The Fonda in Los Angeles on Friday, May 17 .)

“You're getting the ultimate version of me and the ultimate guide for confidence from my eyes,” he tells GQ over Zoom—and in return, he says, audience members are giving him “the most heartfelt and transformative” hugs. Here, Skepi explains what he most wants to teach his followers and how he handles learning (and sometimes, stumbling) in public.

Leo Skepi : I'm 26, I'm Albanian, and I'm gay. And that brings up a plethora of different ideas and contradictions shooting around. But the way it got started was my background being Albanian, being gay, going through the upbringing that I have—which was eventful to say the least—I realized I have a very specific approach to life, and a personality that is not typical. There's a lot of duality in my personality and a lot of contrast. I just started making TikToks for fun, and then I quickly started getting a lot of traction and questions and people liking my personality and wondering how I had such a carefree approach and a sense of self-acceptance and competence that they hadn't seen before, especially in someone who's gay and young. It wasn't typical, from their perspective, to see someone like me show up.

I stopped and thought about the power of a following and what could come from it. And people started asking a lot of questions. And self-development is something that's been a big component of my life. A lot of my personality is not by accident—a lot of the things I know are not by accident or just from one resource, like a book or a podcast or a leader or an idol or something like that. I've had to do a lot of work on myself and nothing is an accident with how I am and how I present in the world. So I figured it was a really good opportunity, since everyone pointed out what I wasn't seeing about myself.

I'm a registered nurse and I was a nurse for a few years. Aside from health care experience, there is a big section of nursing that is around psychology and mental health. I have a lot of infield experience with people suffering from many different mental disorders, from minute things to full schizophrenia where it debilitates your entire ability to live and you have to be confined to a facility.

Personally, I had my own self-acceptance and growth journey because I dealt with a lot of bullying growing up and a lot of things from my culture influenced my personality in a way. I started reading self-help books and I read over a hundred by the time I was 20 and I appreciated a lot of the advice. I went to therapy when I was 19 to help with my sexuality. Never thought I would come out, which is insane. I didn't come out until 21. But I have a lot of personal experience with this field. Specific things I've learned have come from my own insight and reflection and introspection that I've done.

I'd say edutainment. I use my personality that everybody likes to deliver the information, and I talk about a lot of deep and heavy topics with a little bit of lightheartedness and sense of humor. I know how to navigate that dance of what's delicate and what can be laughed at.

That's one thing that is very hard to pin down, 'cause I don't really talk to a specific type of person. I speak to every person individually because the thing I talk about the most is emotions, perspectives, and feelings. And everybody has them. So whoever it hits is whoever it hits. And that's one thing I love about going to see everyone in person on my tour is the melting pot of ages, sexes, races. Every walk of life comes in the door and I love it.

That's one thing that's nuts—seeing the impact. Because I have a weird thing in my brain with social media. I look at it kind of like a video game. It's easy to track numbers and be like, Okay, cool, this amount of people watch this. But I forget that it's people. So when I get to see people in person, it changes the whole thing. I see who I'm speaking to. And it's softened my approach and helped me get better at what I do because when I'm talking to a camera in my apartment, it's easy to be a little bit more insensitive than you would if there's someone across from you. But I think the biggest thing with recognizing impact is the way that people hug me at my live show. This sounds insane, but the way people hug me is like, you can tell I've helped them. And a lot of them say that I've saved their life and the way that they hug me, I feel it. And it makes me so happy and it makes me so grounded. And this is real. This is not a video game.

I would say the DMs that I started getting from people, and when people started to recognize me in person and come up to me in day-to-day life. The reactions people would have, they would be so overwhelmed with the emotion. A lot of people would cry. Like I said, the hugs people give me are insane.

Accountability, discipline—encouragement is a big one. Making people recognize the power in themselves and helping them spot the control they do have, when you do feel powerless. I've struggled with that and I know how impactful that can be. It's just to crack one perspective and show someone a tool that they have or a skill that they already have in them and they can use it to change something they're unhappy with. And I'd say growth. That's the biggest one. It's not fun. It's uncomfortable. Having a community built now and being able to have my journey be online and showing the growth and growing in front of everyone's eyes is not fun.

I went into social media very authentic, vulnerable, and honest. And I've kept that approach, but I've learned through time to set up boundaries with what you will and won't share, what you should or shouldn't share. And also boundaries around a certain topic that I'm still emotionally charged by, because you do not make good content and you do not articulate things correctly. I've learned from a lot of mistakes.

My biggest approach to this is not betraying myself. I'm very authentic. I'm very myself and I'm very honest and it's a big, big challenge to not be swayed by backlash and hate. I never want to be insincere when I say something. So I do not let myself speak on something until I've actually shifted my perspective. And I feel like it is the truth. I'm never gonna get online just to appease people. A lot of people get mad at me for the timing and when I talk about things, but I'm making sure I'm at a point where I fully understand it, feel differently about it, and can speak eloquently about that instead of just rushing a response that seems insincere or goes against myself and then I'm lying online, which I don't wanna do.

Everything kind of boils back down to the point of somehow feeling defective or not enough. Relationship content that I make does extremely well because people are trying to understand why they were not enough for someone or why they were treated the way that they were and they think it's something about them. Same thing with eating, diet, exercise—all of that comes down to trying to get away from that feeling of not being enough.

Oh, all the time. Putting yourself online puts you in a hot seat and opens you up to so much more information because you're being looked at from so many different perspectives. A lot of people can identify things that you might not be seeing. So I'm very, very open to learning from my audience. I learn from them all the time and I encourage everyone in my comments with every podcast that I do to leave information they might know or a different perspective they may have. And if you have something else to share, share it. I'm very open to learning. I've had to recently change my relationship to criticism, but now I've learned a way to even learn from that.

My whole tour is around the topic of confidence. You're getting the ultimate version of me and the ultimate guide for confidence from my eyes. You get reconnected with who you are at the core and confidence coming from that, but also clearing up all the things that are preventing you from already being confident. I'm basically gonna remind you who you are at the core and that confidence is already there, uncover everything that's blocking you from it. I'm gonna rip it off. And then we just let it shine through the tactics that I share. The way that you maneuver life is gonna be completely different. I always say at the beginning of the shows: Prepare to say goodbye to who you were when you walked in, because it's gonna be a whole new version coming out.

But there's also a big community aspect to my shows, because they're all people who relate to what I say. People have gone to my show alone and left posting photos with six or seven people at dinner. Like, “Oh my God, I made all these friends.” So it's a very transformative event to go to, but it's also great for people who are looking for friends and looking for community.

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s “Undisclosed Location” Was a Very Expensive Italian Villa

hamilton international tour instagram

By Kase Wickman

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift

On Wednesday’s episode of the New Heights podcast, Travis Kelce was notably shifty about where he was holed up with Taylor Swift after taking in her Sunday evening Eras Tour performance in Paris . “I can neither disclose that information nor do I know,” he said when his brother-slash-co-host Jason Kelce asked where he was recording. “I can give you a continent: I’m in Europe.”

Specifically, we now know, he was in Italy, at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo’s Lake Como-view Villa Sola Cabiati. Swift and Kelce stayed on the property for three nights, Page Six reported , spending nearly $21,000 per night for the space, which boasts six suites and sleeps up to 12.

The property comes with the use of a full staff, including butlers and a private chef, at the disposal of guests, as well as more frescoes than you can shake a Neo-Classical stick at. The property is the historic home of the Dukes of Serbelloni, according to the hotel’s website , and “remains full of period heirlooms and artwork—including the bed in which Napoleon and Joséphine Bonaparte slept when they visited the Palazzo Serbelloni in Milan.” Don’t forget about the 17th-century villa’s private pool and sprawling garden property, either.

Swift and Kelce, both 34, were spotted Monday evening enjoying dinner al fresco and strolling through the property’s grounds.

The next stop on Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour is Stockholm, Sweden, where she will play three shows at the Friends Arena beginning Friday. Kelce has not confirmed whether he plans to attend, though he did mention on the podcast earlier this week that “I’m gonna be dancing around, I’m all around the world this off-season.”

Representatives for Taylor Swift did not immediately return Vanity Fair ’s request for comment.

Emma Stone Brings Lauren Hutton To Cannes

By Alice Newbold

Image may contain Emma Stone Fashion Clothing Footwear Shoe Adult Person Electronics Camera Accessories and Bag

Fresh from her Poor Things campaign, which ended in an Oscar and a Ryan Gosling-induced, bodice-ripping fashion moment , Emma Stone is back promoting Yorgos Lanthimos’s latest surrealist project, Kinds of Kindness . The Cannes Film Festival red carpet has prompted a distinct vibe shift from the pastel, ruffled whimsies that paid homage to Bella Baxter , the brilliantly bonkers character that scored the actor her second Academy Award. This new-look Stone on the Riviera is sexy, and not at all cutesy; a touch ’70s, rather than period costume adjacent; and inspired by the easy glamour of French style, as opposed to Frankenstein-like fashion drama.

“There’s something so modern, fresh and effortless about this look,” says Stone’s longtime stylist, Petra Flannery, of the burgundy sequined gown featuring a deep V-neckline, sheer tulle back panels and a slight ruffled train, designed–of course–by Nicolas Ghesquière at Louis Vuitton, for whom Stone is ambassador. “I loved the idea of this deep brown-red color set against the blue sky and water. With Emma’s red hair and pale skin, we knew it would pop at Cannes.” The 800,000 paillettes, which took a total of 1,700 hours to perfect, certainly helped.

The dark rouge palette was not just plucked from thin air, but has roots in Lanthimos’s new current-day movie, in which Stone plays three juxtaposing protagonists in a trio of interconnected fables. The polar opposite of Poor Things ’s sherbet-colored dreamscape, Kinds of Kindness (no spoilers!) feels, says Petra, “streamlined and crisp”. More effortless than frou-frou, Flannery found she had one woman in mind when musing on Stone’s no-frills promo looks: Lauren Hutton.

CANNES FRANCE MAY 17 Emma Stone attends the Kinds Of Kindness Red Carpet at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival at...

Known for her classic approach to getting dressed–“Fashion is what you’re offered four times a year and style is what you choose for yourself,” Hutton told Vogue recently–the now-80-year-old model-actor is still put on a pedestal for her uncomplicated, impeccably chic wardrobe choices. As Cannes Film Festival becomes more and more like the Met Gala, with Tinseltowners, models and media personalities all turning out their takes on megawatt glamour, how reassuring to have an understated icon in the back of one’s mind.

Travis Kelce Has a Very Travis Kelce Nickname for His Taylor Swift Concert Buddy, Bradley Cooper

By Emily Tannenbaum

Travis Kelce Bradley Cooper

Of course, of course, Travis Kelce refers to Bradley Cooper as “Big Coop.”

In the latest episode of the New Heights  podcast, the Kansas City Chiefs player told his brother Jason Kelce all about attending the Eras Tour with Gigi Hadid and her boyfriend , Big Coop. The group danced the night away at Swift’s final show in Paris on May 12, which also happened to be her 87th show. The number 87 is of particular significance to Travis, who wears it on his jersey in honor of his older brother, who was born in 1987.

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

Swift herself marked the occasion during her surprise set by singing a mash-up of “Treacherous” and “ The Alchemy ,” a new song from The Tortured Poets Department that is largely believed to have been written about Travis—though the “shirts off” lyric could easily be considered a nod to Jason .

TikTok content

Overall, it sounds like Travis had a great time with the Hollywood It couple, as well as two other VIPs. According to the football player, Donna Kelce and Cooper’s mom, Gloria Campano, were also in attendance. It was Mother’s Day in the United States, after all.

“I got to see Gigi and Bradley. Bradley Cooper, man. B.C., Big Coop. We were all in the suite having a blast. They’re amazing,” Travis Kelce told his brother on their podcast, which dropped its latest episode on May 15. “Of course, Bradley Cooper’s a huge Eagles fan. And he got to see Mom.”

After hearing Travis describe the evening as “an all-around lovely night,” Jason asked him how the show measured up to the previous four Eras Tour stops he has attended in Kansas City, Argentina, Singapore, and Australia. “I don’t know if they’re just getting better or if I just keep forgetting how they are,” Travis said. “It was electric in there.”

They aren't hiding their PDA.

Gigi Hadid, Bradley Cooper

Though Travis admitted that “Kansas City showed out,” Argentina was “unbelievable,” Australians “party with the best of them,” and Singapore was “so unique and so fun,” the NFL star said Paris was on “a whole ’nother level, man.”

“I’m just happy for everybody that’s in the Eras Tour that’s performing,” Travis continued. “From the dancers to the band, and obviously Taylor, it just looks like they’re having so much fun up there and they’re absolutely killing it, and they’re putting on a show that you won’t get anywhere else.”

When it comes to support like that, who are we to fight the alchemy?
