Alison Krauss helped bring bluegrass to a new audience in the ’90s. Blending bluegrass with folk, Krauss was instantly acclaimed from the start of her career, but it wasn’t until her platinum-selling 1995 compilation Now That I’ve Found You that she became a mainstream star.

Between her 1987 debut Too Late to Cry and Now That I’ve Found You , she matured from a child prodigy to a versatile, ambitious, and diverse musician and, in the process, made some of the freshest bluegrass of the late ’80s and early ’90s.

Krauss & Union Station followed the unexpected success of Now That I’ve Found You with So Long, So Wrong in spring 1997. Forget About It came in mid-1999. A year later, Krauss & Union Station joined the likes of John Hartford, Ralph Stanley, and others for the multi-million-selling soundtrack O Brother, Where Art Thou ? A North American tour encompassing some of the album’s stellar musicians followed in summer 2002, allowing Krauss and her band’s popularity to soar. New Favorite appeared in November and went gold within four months. A live record came soon after, and in 2004 Krauss put forth Lonely Runs Both Ways. A Hundred Miles or More, a collection drawn from Krauss’ Rounder albums, along with sides recorded for assorted soundtrack projects and five previously fresh new tracks, appeared in 2007.

Joining Union Station

Krauss’s journey led her to meet Dan Tyminski and the members of Union Station in 1984 at bluegrass festivals. This encounter marked the beginning of her illustrious career with the band that would shape her musical identity. The Path to Stardom

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss announce first tour in over a decade

The collaborators are gearing up to tour the US and Europe next year in support of their new album, 'Raise The Roof'

Led Zeppelin ‘s Robert Plant and singer-songwriter Alison Krauss have announced a 2022 US and European tour, marking their first time hitting the road together in 12 years.

It comes after the pair released their new album ‘Raise The Roof’ yesterday (November 19), marking 14 years since the release of their first collaborative release, ‘Raising Sand’.

‘Raise The Roof’ features 12 new recordings of songs by the likes of Merle Haggard, Allen Toussaint, The Everly Brothers, Anne Briggs, Geeshie Wiley, Bert Jansch and more. The record also includes ‘High and Lonesome’, an original song written by Plant and Burnett.

“We wanted it to move,” Krauss said in a statement about their new album. “We brought other people in, other personalities within the band, and coming back together again in the studio brought a new intimacy to the harmonies.”

The album was produced by T Bone Burnett and features contributions from drummer Jay Bellerose, guitarists Marc Ribot, David Hidalgo, Bill Frisell and Buddy Miller, bassists Dennis Crouch and Viktor Krauss, pedal steel guitarist Russ Pahl and more.

The accompanying tour will kick off on June 1, 2022, at CMAC in Canandaigua, New York, and will include a performance at London’s BST Hyde Park festival on June 26.

The band’s full discography is now available for users to soundtrack their posts with, and the new account promises Led Zeppelin-themed artwork, graphics, archive live performances and more.

The band join the likes of The Beatles and ABBA in joining TikTok in 2021, with the former adding 36 of their biggest hits to the platform including ‘Hey Jude’, ‘Love Me Do,’ ‘The Long and Winding Road,’ ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand,’ ‘Something, ‘Eleanor Rigby’, ‘Day Tripper’ and ‘Paperback Writer.’

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss will be on tour together for the first time in 13 years next summer when they team up for a joint outing in the U.S. and Europe behind a new album that comes out today, “Raise the Roof.”

The tour isn’t an extensive one, at least as currently announced. In America, Plant and Krauss are due to only play 10 dates, all in the eastern U.S., Midwest or South. Their European trek is even shorter, consisting of eight dates.

Three of the 10 U.S. dates are in New York state, with the tour scheduled to kick off in Canandaigua, NY on June 1 and proceed to Saratoga Springs and Forest Hills Stadium in Queens. From there, there are shows in cities including Chicago, Philadelphia and Indianapolis before the U.S. leg wraps up just over two weeks later at Atlanta’s Cadence Bank Amphitheatre.

Ten days after that, Plant and Krauss commence the European leg in London at BST Hyde Park on June 26, wrapping up in Berlin on July 20.

Tickets for the U.S. go on sale to the general public Dec. 3, following some presales on Nov. 29. For the European dates, the presales begin Nov. 24 and the general sale commences Nov. 26.

Demand will certainly succeed supply at these outings, and there’s no word on whether dates in other areas may be added later. But even after their previous album, the Grammy-winning “Raising Sand,” came out in 2007, tour dates didn’t come in huge abundance, topping out at fewer than 50 shows.

Plant and Krauss did almost all of their previous touring as a duo over a period of six months in 2008, followed by a handful of European dates in 2009. They did subsequently perform together for a few songs in 2015 as part of a tribute to the blues legend Lead Belly at the Kennedy Center.

The new “Raise the Roof,” on Rounder Records, has been hailed as a worthy follow-up to “Raising Sand,” which won Grammys for album and record of the year, among other plaudits, at the Grammys. Both albums were produced by T Bone Burnett, who joined the band on the 2008 tour.

“The album sounds warm, mystical and at times slightly foreboding, like an old friend you’re glad to see again who’s still a little mysterious,” wrote Variety in a November profile of the duo. Read that interview here .

The pair will appear on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” tonight and “CBS Saturday Morning” tomorrow morning.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss Announce Global Summer 2022 Tour

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss will hit the road together next summer for an international tour in support of Raise the Roof , which arrives today.

The trek will kick off on June 1 in Canandaigua, N.Y., and conclude on July 20 in Berlin, Germany. These are the duo's first dates together since 2008, following the release of their initial collaboration, Raising Sand .

The announcement is part of a huge media blitz. Plant and Krauss will appear today on CBS Morning and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert , where they're set to perform songs from the new album . They will host a global YouTube livestream , and join NPR Music for an album listening party. They'll also play more from Raise the Roof this weekend on CBS Saturday Morning .

Plant admits there was some apprehension about stepping back into the studio more than a decade after the monumental success of  Raising Sand . “I wasn’t sure whether we could re-invoke what we had,” he told the  New York Times . “But it was very short-lived, that question of whether or not it was real. It was like, I bow to her and she curtsies to me, and we see what we can do.”

Robert Plant  and  Alison Krauss have announced their first joint tour dates in twelve years. The summer 2022 tour will come in support of  Raise The Roof , the duo’s first collaborative effort since their blockbuster debut, Raising Sand , which netted the unlikely duo six Grammy Awards including “Album of the Year” in 2009.

Beginning on June 1st, 2022 in Canandaigua, NY, the Led Zeppelin frontman and the 27x Grammy-winner will bring their new set of tunes to U.S. amphitheaters and bandshells including Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY (6/3), Forest Hills Stadium in Forest Hills, NY (6/4), Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago, IL (6/7),  Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD (6/11),  The Mann  in Philadelphia, PA (6/12), and more.

Beginning on June 1, 2022, the Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer and 27-time Grammy winner will bring their brand new music to an international run of bandshell shows, including New York City’s Forest Hills Stadium.

Tickets for U.S. dates go on sale at 10 a.m. local time Friday, December 3, following a series of presales starting Monday, November 29. European dates go on sale at 9 a.m. CET on Friday, November 26, with presales beginning Wednesday, November 24.

The release of Raise The Roof has been accompanied by a host of major appearances and performances from Plant and Krauss. Earlier today they gave their first U.S. TV interview tied to the album on CBS Mornings .

Tonight, they will perform on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert , and tomorrow on CBS Saturday Morning . In the weeks leading up to Raise The Roof , the album has been celebrated with a New York Times Sunday Arts & Leisure profile, a multi-page spread in Vanity Fair , as well as features in Variety, Entertainment Weekly, People, Associated Press, and far beyond. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss aren’t ready to stop singing together just yet. “We’ve been doing this on and off since 2007,” says Krauss, “and it’s just gotten better every time we’ve gotten together.” So after touring for the past two years behind their second collaborative album, 2021’s Raise the Roof , they’re adding 28 tour dates this year, beginning in June. Krauss and Plant gave Rolling Stone for their only interview about the new tour, explaining why they just can’t quit each other, discussing future plans, breaking down their set list, and much more. Alison Krauss:  It’s felt great. I’m really glad that we’ve been able to revisit this as many times as we have. The band has more room, and I get a little more consistency with what’s happening when it’s time for me to jump in and sing harmony. And I thought, “Oh, it’ll be too long in between …” But it’s amazing how quickly the months go by before we go out again. I’m really looking forward to doing it again.

Alison, when you mentioned a little more consistency, I know that was always kind of an issue. Robert sings with a lot of freedom and improvisation, so it was always a challenge to harmonize. How are those things changing to make it easier? Krauss: Oh, I don’t know if they’re changing [laughs] . It’s just that I can catch a little bit more of his phrasing when he looks my way.  He’s always very funny, because he’s like, “Don’t worry about it!” He goes, “It’s the same. It’s the same every time.” And i’m like, “It’s never the same!” So, you know, I gotta hang on for dear life.

Plant: I don’t notice any of that!

Plant: I think you do such a great job. I feel the viking lodestone moving around to magnetic north when you are doing the things that you do. So regal and beautiful … For me, it’s like Asbury Park, like a fairground ride at times, just to try and remember harmony positions, which I was not born into, because I was a rock & roll singer, trying to be Dion, all those years ago. 

I’ve learned a lot, and those moments are hair-raising. It’s great to be learning and be contrite and humble and come into your dressing room bowing and saying “Can you just explain the last harmony to me again?”

What have the two of you both been up to since July, when the last dates ended? Krauss: I’ve been in the studio recording. And that’s a tedious process. Plant: I’ve got a group of friends that I play with over here a little bit from time to time. I’ve also been going through all that stuff that I never released and never quite got finished. And getting excited about it. Going, “Wow. What am I going to do with that?” It’s the idioms, the visitation, the places that I’ve been musically which were not complete are just mind-boggling, and they’re a little bit overwhelming.

Are you writing new songs as well, Robert? Plant: I’ve got a Tascam digital recorder, and I sing, and I put the vocals through a guitar pedal, and then I record them on that over there, and it sounds great. Why bother to go to the studio? But I can’t find words. This is a very difficult time to try and wax lyrical out there.

I love that. Alison, in your genre, it’s taken for granted that people will stay onstage until, basically, they can’t stand up anymore, even beyond. You’re quite young still, but I’m sure that you’ve always taken it for granted that you’re going to be doing this if you can when you’re 80 or 90. Krauss: You never know how you’re going to feel, and you never know when you’re going to feel different. With this music, I think so many people started so young, and they toured so much. It’s all they knew. It’s hard to say, what I’m going to feel when when I get older. 

Robert, there’s people of your generation retiring. Do you think about retirement? You seem to love being on the road, so do you want to just push it as long as you can push it? Plant: The camaraderie, the things that you share up there, and the frailties that you know you’re carrying with you quietly, the exposure of yourself to yourself, is something that I would hate to say goodbye to. I can’t just sit back. Out there in the real world, people say to me, “What about the book?” And I say, “Are you kidding? What? This is spectacular. Why think about it twice?” This is today. What happened in Schenectady in 1969 is another story. And for me, the continuum must keep going. Today, I was pulling all my lyric books out and going, “Gotta get the groove back. I’ve got something to say.” So yeah, I’m going to keep going — as long as they’ve got effects machines that make me sound good [laughs] . Well, it worked for Elvis! Listen to the compression on his voice on some of those big ballads in ’57.  

Robert, you sang “Stairway to Heaven” for the first time in many years at a charity event last year. What did that feel like? Plant: It was cathartic. People go, “Oh, that’s good. He never was going to do that.” But I didn’t really do it! I just blurted it out. ‘Cause it’s such an important song to me for where I was at the time and where I was with Jimmy and with John and Bonzo. So on that night, it was what it was. It was a trial by fire, but I felt better at the end than at the beginning. 

Finally, you have these 30 or so dates, and you have your own careers. What are your hopes for the future of this collaboration? Plant: I really hope that we pull a cat out of the bag again.  

Krauss: We have had such a great time making those records and touring that I’d love to see it happen again, too. I feel like we’ve made something new when we recorded together. The whole thing has been a surprise for me. And I know it was for Robert too, although he seems to have more bravery in this department.

Further dates have been added to Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’ world tour, with the pair due to play more shows in the US in September.

The official Plant and Krauss Facebook page announced on June 21 that the pair will perform four further shows on the east coast of the US in September. Their June 16 show in Atlanta, Georgia has been rescheduled to September 6 after it was cut short due to severe weather .

The newly announced shows are as follows:

• September 6 – Atlanta, Georgia (rescheduled from June 16)
• September 7 – Franklin, Tennessee
• September 9 – Boston, Massachusetts
• September 10 – Mashantucket, Connecticut
• September 12 – New York, New York

The announcement of the new US shows comes as Plant and Krauss prepare to kick off their European tour leg with a performance at Glastonbury Festival in England on June 24.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss to tour Europe

If Led Zeppelin tours in 2008, it won’t be during May: Singer Robert Plant has reserved that month for a European jaunt with Alison Krauss.

Plant, fresh off a hugely successful reunion concert with Led Zeppelin, and bluegrass star Krauss announced the European leg of their tour Thursday. It had been known that a tour was in the works, but both had been mum on details.

Their new album, “Raising Sand,” was released in October, just about the time Plant, 59, and former Led Zeppelin bandmates Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones confirmed they would play a one-time only show at a benefit concert for the late Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun.

The Led Zeppelin show, which took place Monday at the sold-out O2 Arena in London, drew rave reviews and sparked renewed rumors that the band — with the late John Bonham’s son Jason on drums — would tour.

But first, at least, Plant will hit the road with the 36-year-old Krauss in support of their album, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard chart in the United States and has been widely praised.

The duo will start the tour May 5 in Birmingham, England, and then move on to Manchester and Cardiff, Wales, before going to Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway.

The European leg will conclude in London at the Wembley Arena on May 22.

No other dates have been announced, but Plant and Krauss have said they will also tour in the U.S.

According to NME.com , LED ZEPPELIN frontman Robert Plant and bluegrass star Alison Krauss will embark on a European tour in May 2008 to promote their collaborative CD, "Raising Sand" . In addition to the "Raising Sand" material, they'll perform songs from their catalogs — including LED ZEPPELIN 's "When the Levee Breaks" and "Black Dog" .

Tickets go on sale on Friday, December 14 at 9:00 a.m. GMT.

According to Nashville's NBC affiliate WSMV-TV , Plant and Krauss will perform at the Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tennessee next June.

A disc of tender, mostly acoustic duets, "Raising Sand" — which was produced by T Bone Burnett — debuted at No. 2 n The Billboard 200 chart in late October, becoming an unexpected hit.

"Raising Sand" includes versions of the EVERLY BROTHERS ' "Gone, Gone, Gone (Done Moved On)" , TOM WAITS and KATHLEEN BRENNAN 's "Trampled Rose" and "Please Read the Letter" , first released on the 1998 PLANT / JIMMY PAGE album "Walking Into Clarksdale" .

According to Billboard.com , Plant and Krauss first performed together in 2004 at a Leadbelly tribute at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, but it took several years before they found time to team up in the studio with Burnett in Nashville and Los Angeles.

Tennessean.com reported that Plant and Krauss taped an episode of "CMT Crossroads" in October at The Mill at Lebanon in Tennessee that will air at a later date.

Plant and Krauss were interviewed on BBC 's "Breakfast" show on October 31 about "Raising Sand" CD. Watch the nine-minute segment below.

Alison Krauss is a country singer and songwriter hailing from Decatur, Illinois, United States who was born on the 23rd of July 1971. Since her debut in 1984 she has released 16 studio albums and has become the most awarded female artist in the history of the Grammy Awards.

Alison Krauss is the kind of late starter that could put this current generation of pop stars to shame. Picking up the violin at the age of five, she started studying the classical side of the instrument first before turning to bluegrass soon afterwards. Three years after she picked up the instrument she was already entering and winning talent contests and by the age of ten she was performing with her own band. She spent her early teenage years winning vast amounts of praise for her musicianship, with Vanity Fair calling her a Virtuoso and the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass in America naming her the "Most Promising Fiddler in the Midwest”.

However, Krauss’ career would soon take her far beyond anything regional. When she was twelve she joined the band of bassist and songwriter John Pennell, an outfit called Silver Rail. However, after another band was discovered of the same name, their moniker was changed to Union Station. In 1985 she released her first solo record, a collection of classic fiddle tunes that didn’t really go anywhere. However, it did land her a record deal with Rounder Records, and with Union Station backing her, and Pennell writing the songs, together they created Krauss’ second album “Too Late To Cry” in 1987.

It was at this point that Krauss and Union Station started to get some mainstream attention, quickly following up “Too Late To Cry” with extensive touring and then 1989’s “Two Highways”. This was Krauss’ first album to be credited to her and Union Station, but Rounder wanted her to alternate between solo records and then records with the band, so the first time that Krauss achieved mainstream success was under her own name with 1990’s “I’ve Got That Old Feeling”. The record was a reasonable commercial success but it was also the first record to net her a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Recording.

The 90’s proved to be very kind to Krauss, as her and Union Station took their brand of rootsy bluegrass into the mainstream charts. 1994 saw the release of her first top ten country hit in the form of “Somewhere In The Vicinity Of The Heart”. 1995’s compilation album “Now That I’ve Found You: A Collection” saw her embark into the top twenty of the Billboard 200 for the first time, peaking at number 13. The collection of older releases and covers from her career, one that was already a decade long at this point, would also go double platinum, selling two million copies before the year was out.

Since then, Krauss has gone from strength to strength. She’s won a veritable mountain of Grammy Awards (27 in total), had a further five more of her albums certified Gold, become an omissible live act with Union Station and generally become one of the biggest Bluegrass artists in the world. Not to mention recording and releasing a critically acclaimed and commercially successful album with the one and only Robert Plant as well. She’s something of a legend, and for that, she comes highly recommended.

I don’t often get all excitable and gushy about bands or artists, but then it’s not often that I’m granted the privilege of seeing one of the biggest talents in American music alive- the legendary bluegrass singer and fiddler, Alison Krauss. I’ve loved her incandescent, soulfully pitch-perfect voice and lullaby-like lyrics since hearing her featured extensively on the soundtrack to the Cohen Brothers’ masterpiece movie, ‘O Brother Where Art Though’ in 2000, but Krauss has been performing and winning awards (she’s currently the most awarded singer and most awarded female artist ever) since the release of her first album, ‘Different Strokes’, in 1987. Her voice and sheer instrumental talents on the piano and violin remain, in my opinion, unsurpassed, and along with her long-time band, Union Station, Krauss puts on a stellar show that is a delight to be a part of.

I was lucky enough to catch Alison Krauss and Union Station on the same bill as another country music legend, Willie Nelson, earlier this year, so this was a special show indeed- but for me, it was all about Krauss. She certainly didn’t disappoint, playing classic balladic hits like ‘When You Say Nothing At All’, ‘Stay’, and the gospel-influenced ‘Down In The River To Pray’, a favourite track from the ‘O Brother…’ soundtrack. Union Station were also all class and musical talent, and accompanied Krauss’ delicate-yet-powerful vocals perfectly. An amazing show of true prowess from some of the most legendary living artists!

It takes quite the performer to be able to hold their own alongside a musician as legendary as Robert Plant, but whilst Alison Krauss probably can’t quite lay claim to having quite the same level of fame or musical influence as the former Led Zeppelin frontman, she’s certainly of a similar stature within her own genre of bluegrass. Underlining how huge that style is in America, she’s won an astonishing twenty-seven Grammy awards, making her the record-holder for the living person with the most wins alongside Quincy Jones, and she’s managed a couple of platinum records, too, as well as success on both sides of the Atlantic with Raising Sand, her collaborative album with Plant - it went in at number two in both the U.S. and the UK. She continues to tour, too, these days primarily with her band, Union Station. Her most recent jaunt across the UK came back in 2011, when a run across the nation’s theatres culminated in two nights at London’s Royal Festival Hall. She played career-spanning sets, showcasing the flexibility of her vocal talents, with Union Station providing superb backing throughout; still only forty-three, there’s still time for her to genuinely conquer the UK, so look out for a return before long, too.

Alison Krauss is something of a legendary performer when it comes to the genre of country and bluegrass. Entering the music industry at an incredibly young age seems to have given Alison an advantage against her contemporaries as she has had extra time to perfect her craft and develop her natural musical talents.

Now a complete professional when performing live, she selects her most accomplished and celebrated work from her long discography to really amaze fans with her abilities. The way in which she is able to captivate a room with the slight flick of a violin bow is really something and matched with her startling vocal the whole audience are entranced by the unusual performer.

The levels of music here is of the highest calibre, as one would imagine it would be for a 27 times Grammy award winner yet Alison stills breaks from her performance to interact with the crowd. A real icon of genre and a performer who cannot be compared.

Flat out one of the best singer performers alive today. Her voice has amazing tonal qualities and perfect pitch. Seeing her in concert seven years ago was a treat from the second row! Jerry Douglas world class dobro player and Union Station are in the top five acoustical acts that I've ever seen. In live shows my favorite women singers are Alison and Bonnie Raitt. The blending of the bands instruments are acoustically matched and blended producing unmatched balance from the years of practicing and touring together! I can assure you any opportunity to see them.....I will be going!

What a show. Supported by two of the Cox family. Sang most of her recognised songs.

Disappointed she didn't sing " please read the letter".

But her version of " you say it best" was stunning.

We traveled from Spain for this concert. Took friends who had never heard of her and they loved it.

saw Alison Krauss at Foxwoods on 9/7. Her voice is amazing! The harmony between her and the Cox family that joined her for the evening was fantastic! A lot of the songs were very moving, stating love, faith, and worship. Highly recommend seeing her if the opportunity arises.

Alison Krauss and band had the beautiful, pure sound audiences have always expected from them. Sweet harmonies and familiar melodies along with creative, sensitive instrumentation contributed to a lovely and memorable evening of musical entertainment.

She sings like an angel and her band is first class. I just wish she could have appeared without Willie Nelson so we could hear more from her and her band mates.
