Looking for things to do in Westport? You’ve landed in the right place!
Ready for some colour? Westport’s got bags of the stuff. Oh, and it’s got a ton of character, history, outdoor adventures and fine places for a pint too.
Named ‘the best place to live in Ireland’ back in 2012 by the Irish Times, this vibrant town on the Mayo coast has built on that recognition ever since.
Whether you’re visiting in the depths of winter or the height of summer, here’s 11 of the best things to do in Westport:

The lively little town of Westport is home to a handful of the best things to do in Mayo . It’s also a stone’s throw from many of the county’s top attractions.
In the first section of this guide, you’ll discover what to do in Westport. In the second section, you’ll find things to do near Westport (within reasonable driving distance).
1. Cycle the Great Western Greenway

If you’re wondering what to do in Westport that’ll get the blood flowing while treating you to some incredible scenery, the Great Western Greenway should tickle your fancy.
Following part of the old Midlands Great Western Railway route that closed in 1937, it’s now become a 43km cycle trail that meanders its way through Mayo from Westport to Achill, via Newport and several other towns and villages.
Free from the sound of droning traffic and containing only a few gentle inclines for any inexperienced cyclists, it’s a perfect slice of escapism (and exercise!).
2. Climb Croagh Patrick
Got your hiking boots ready? The epic pyramid-like figure of Croagh Patrick looms over Westport and no trip here would be complete without climbing Ireland’s ‘Holy Mountain’.
At a height of 2510 ft above sea-level, this is no simple stroll though so don’t take it lightly. It should take around two hours to climb to the summit but the views when you reach the top are epic.
On a pilgrimage or not, the climb is arguably one of the best things to do in Westport, and it’s well worth dedicating a day to. Here’s a full guide to the Croagh Patrick hike to follow.
3. Grab a post-adventure pint at Matt Molloy’s
Photo via Google Maps
There’s an endless number of pubs in Westport . From tourist favourites, like Matt Molloy’s, to often-missed spots, like Toby’s, there’s a pub to tickle every fancy.
If you visit during ‘normal’ times, you’ll find live music at Matt’s 7 nights a week (you might even catch the man himself joining in one of the sessions).
Kicking back with live music at Matt’s is one of the more popular things to do in Westport amongst visiting tourists, which means it can be tough to nab a seat. Try and get in early.
4. Try your hand at watersports
Photo by Rock and Wasp (Shutterstock)
They’re a dab hand at the old adventure game in Westport and if you like getting out of your comfort zone then watersports are solid option.
The Blueway is a network of water trails where you’ll have the opportunity to experience a range of water-based activities.
Zip up your wetsuit and choose from snorkeling, kayaking, stand-up paddle-boarding and the action-packed ‘coasteering’. More info here .
5. Head for a stroll around Westport House & Grounds
Almost 300 years-old, the beautiful Westport House is one of Ireland’s finest heritage attractions and just one visit will tell you why.
As well as the 30 ornate rooms on show and the six permanent exhibitions, it’s the stunning parkland setting that really sets it apart.
Its riverside location sits amid manicured gardens and offers incredible views overlooking Clew Bay and up towards Croagh Patrick – Ireland’s Holy Mountain.
If you’re wondering what to do in Westport when it’s raining, Westport House is a handy option. The gardens here are also a fine place for a ramble.
6. Make your belly happy at An Port Mór Restaurant
Photos via An Port Mor on Facebook
There are some excellent restaurants in Westport that make the perfect night-time destination for a post-adventure bite-to-eat.
One of my favourite spots is the brilliant An Port Mór. Here you can sample seasonal produce and some very tasty West of Ireland ingredients that’ll tantalise your tastebuds.
Its bright red entrance is unmissable, as is the food, served up by award-winning head chef Frankie Mallon. He says his style is ‘rustic meets quirky’ and you can be the judge of that by ordering one of his signature creations such as Crab Cakes in a Seaweed Polenta.
You’ll find plenty of other great places to eat in the town in our Westport Food Guide (from casual eats to fine dining).
Other popular things to do in Westport (and nearby)

Now that we have our favourite places to visit in Westport out of the way, it’s time to see what else there is to do in the town and nearby.
Below, you’ll find everything from the Westport Adventure Park and some gorgeous beaches, to a waterfall and more.
1. Visit Westport Adventure Park
Ever tried to play soccer while encased inside a 1.5m inflatable bubble? Yes, it’s not a conventional way of playing ‘the beautiful game’ but Westport Adventure Park is all about having fun and getting stuck into lively activities.
There’s also assault courses, paintballing, zorb wars and the new game Splatball – similar to paintball but with less impact from lower velocity guns.
Only a 15-minute drive from town, it’s a great spot for a stag weekend activity too. This is a handy place to head if you’re looking for things to do in Westport with a group.

2. Tourmakeady Waterfall (30-minute drive)
If you fancy escaping the hustle and bustle of Westport Town, take the 30-minute drive out to Tourmakeady Woods.
It’s here that you can head off on a glorious woodland walk that’ll take up around the incredible Tourmakeady Waterfall – a very hidden gem.
The walk here is nice and leisurely and it’s a place that tends to be missed by many that visit Westport, so it’s well worth doing.
4. Visit one of the many mighty beaches at Mulranny (35-minute drive)
Westport Ireland Points of Interest: Photo by Aloneontheroad (Shutterstock)
Another of Mayo’s hidden treasures, Mulranny’s tranquil beaches offer striking panoramic views over scenic Clew Bay.
A 35-minute drive from Westport, there’s plenty of activities to get stuck into once you arrive, including hiking, fishing and golf.
But really Mulranny is all about the beaches and gorgeous landscape around them. A fine place to see some of the best beaches in Mayo .

5. Visit Pirate Adventure Park (one of the best things to do in Westport with kids)
If you’re looking for a perfect family day out, then you could do a lot worse than Westport’s award-winning Pirate Adventure Park .
With activities including a mini zip line, a vortex tunnel, an inflatable obstacle course and, of course, a swinging pirate ship, there are loads to keep the little ones entertained for a few hours.
It’s also only a stone’s throw from Westport House if you want to combine the two in one visit.
Things to do near Westport
OK, so we’ve tackled what to do in Westport, it’s time to take a look at the best places to visit nearby, within reasonable driving distance.
Below, you’ll find everything from Clare Island and Inishturk, to Castlebar, Doolough Valley, some incredible beaches and more.
1. Islands galore
You’ve several gorgeous islands a handy spin from Westport. Achill Island (home to the highest sea cliffs in Ireland and Keem Bay ) is a short, 40-minute drive away.
The departure point (Roonagh Pier) for both Clare Island and Inishturk Island is also a handy 35-minute drive. Each of the islands is well worth a visit, although Clare Island and Inishturk are much quieter.
2. Hidden gems
Photos via the Lost Valley
If you fancy stepping a little off-the-beaten-path, you’re in luck – there’s some brilliant hidden gems a near the town.
The Lost Valley (55-minute drive) is arguably one of the most unique places in Ireland. Doolough Valley (40-minute drive) will treat you to endless wild, unspoiled scenery.
And the incredible Silver Strand Beach in Louisburgh is up there with the best beaches in Ireland. Other nearby attractions include:
- Ballintubber Abbey (20-minute drive)
- Knock Shrine (45-minute drive)
- Wild Nephin Ballycroy National Park (45-minute drive)

Wonderfully planned and executed trip. Our tour director was a gem and looked after us as if we were in her own family. Lots of good, first hand info, including her native experiences growing up and raising her family. She did poetry readings, wonderful Irish stories and sang a song or two, all seemingly by memory.

Great irish tour.

The scenic beauty and charm of westport.
Westport is a charming town in County Mayo on Ireland's west coast . Located about 1hr 30 mins from Galway, this remote area of Ireland retains its rugged beauty. There's plenty to see and do around Westport including the Great Western Greenway, Achill Island, Clare Island, Clew Bay with its 365 Islands, Westport House and Croagh Patrick.
We decided to do a weekend in Westport this April and thoroughly enjoyed a wonderful few days absorbing the landscape. Westport is a lovely small town, but there are plenty of lovely towns and villages in Ireland. What makes this area unique is the landscape, and I'd recommend spending some time absorbing the fresh air - just kick back and relax.
Our Westport Highlights...
1. Achill Island & "Achill Henge"
On the first day, we headed out to Achill Island, and the first point of call was " Achill Henge ". Built in 2011 by developer Joe McNamara, it was supposed to symbolise the Celtic Tiger (the large boom in the Irish Economy that preceded the recent recession). It was built without planning permission on a hilltop above Keel on Achill Island. Some people like its symbolism, some think it's just hideous. I'll leave you to make your own judgements...

Achill Henge does, however, seem to do its job in representing the Celtic Tiger. It sprung up without any planning by a developer who is now bankrupt, left half-built on a remote site and now with no one quite knowing what to do with it. Just like so many of the "Ghost Estates" in Ireland's countryside.
There have been legal movements by the local council to have it removed, though as yet no action has been taken. It does seem though now the years are starting to pass that it may become a permanent feature of Achill Island's Landscape.
Achill Island has many other boasts including Europe's highest sea cliffs. It is a rugged island of hills & bogs, giant views & small villages. A perfect place for those wanting to experience the big scenery & ruggedness of the islands of Ireland's Atlantic coast.

2. The Great Western Greenway
An old disused train line from Westport to Achill Island has been converted into the Great Western Greenway - a 42km cycle path leading through some of Ireland's most ruggedly beautiful countryside. Coastline, mountains, bogs, rivers & villages all pass you by on this very well planned cycle path. I was impressed with how well this trail has been done. There are a few small stretches on road, otherwise, the vast majority is off-road and in some parts you really feel away from everything. Being an old railway line its gentle gradients make it a very enjoyable leisurely cycle, and with villages, cafés & pubs on route there's no shortage of refueling spots along the way.
Great Western Greenway Details
We hired bikes from Clew Bay Bike Hire , but there's also the option of booking a cycle tour and have a guide show you the best spots (€30-40 pp for 4-7 hrs | www.westportcycletours.com | +353 (0)87 9199152).
If you don't have a guide, be sure to check the wind forecast. The cycle path runs East (Westport) to West (Achill Island). Ireland's prevailing winds are westerly, so in that case, the bike hire people can give you & your bike a lift to Achill Island & you cycle one way with a tailwind the whole time!
The first village you'll pass on leaving Achill Island is Mulranny . A small village with stunning views across clew bay, there's a good café there too for a quick refuel. Look out for the Mulranny Goats too, wild goats that inhabit this area and are often seen on this stretch of the greenway.
We stopped about 5 km after Mulranny at the famous Nevin's Inn for lunch and can definitely recommend their meals - delicious!
Visitor Information
- www.greenway.ie
Along the route, you'll pass Newport , a small riverside town. There are several pubs to choose from here & if you fancy a bite to eat Grainne Uaile is a good choice for food.
Newport Details
There are many bike rental places along the route, so if you fancy just a short stretch then my favourite was the Mullanny to Newport part. 18kms with stunning and changing views and great lunch stops too.
4. Croagh Patrick
Ireland Holiest Mountain sits on the south side of clew bay, and after a few hours exploring Westport Town on the Sunday we headed here to climb the mountain. A distinctive cone shape, the 765m high Croagh Patrick is where St Patrick himself is said to have spent 40 days of fasting and penance.
Croagh Patrick Details
Pilgrimage of croagh patrick.
It's a very popular destination for tourists and pilgrims alike. You will find many religious pilgrims here climbing to the top and including some climbing in bare feet.
Do not be fooled by the large number of people climbing Croagh Patrick; it is a challenging hike to the summit. I was surprised on my first visit how hard parts of it are. It takes 1:30 to 2 hours on the way up, and maybe 1:30 hours on the way down. The upper section is made of a large scree slope of loose rocks that move and slide as you walk. Be prepared with spare layers for the cooler temperatures at the top, good footwear, water and some snacks.
The views though are worth all the effort in climbing, it's just spectacular. Check the forecast closely though for a clear day, and then you'll be able to see from Clare Island out in the Atlantic to Achill Island to the north, all the drumlins of Clewbay and into Westport too. The full 360 panorama of South Mayo is one of Ireland's best vistas. If you fancy travelling on to Clare Island itself, it is well worth the trip. Clare Island Adventures offer plenty of exciting activities that will make for an entertaining group day out, and there is a nice hostel on Clare Island which is also worth a visit. Get there with Clare Island Ferries
5. Clew Bay
Clew Bay itself is one of the most beautiful bays on the whole west coast of Ireland . Dominant mountains surround the bay on both sides, which is full of small islands called Drumlins. These were created as Glaciers from the last ice age 10,000 years ago melted and retreated, leaving small sand and shale islands. They say there's 365 of them, on for every day of the year, though many are no more than a part submerged sandbank. That said though if you've ever wanted to own your own Island then this could be a good place to look, John Lennon even owned one in the 1970s.
Clew Bay Details
There are plenty of charter boat companies offering tours of clew bay, and for the more enthusiastic then sea kayaking is another option too.
For me though just the views from the coastline across the bay are spectacular. Ideally, if you can get a bit of height, then you'll truly get to enjoy the big scenery Clew Bay has to offer.
6. Westport House
Westport itself is a busy town that's popular with tourists and is a favourite among tourists. Wandering the small town & surrounding area is a pleasure, with plenty of interesting places to discover. Between the town centre and waterfront is Westport House , a grand country estate set in large gardens. They have an activity centre & café, and the lakes make a grand setting for the house itself. Please note there is an entrance fee to get up to the house though you can see some of the gardens and lakes for free.
7. The Pirate Queen, Grace O'Malley
This area is home to Grace O'Malley, also known as Granuaile, the Pirate Queen . In the 16th century, she was chieftain of the O'Malley clan and has become a very significant figure in Irish Culture and history. Her clan ruled this area of Ireland and were feared seafarers. She was powerful enough to meet and negotiate with Queen Elizabeth directly, using Latin as their only common language. Nowadays there's both truth and folklore attached to Granuile, and for those interested in the history of Ireland then this area has lots of fascinating places to see.

Time for a spin?
Okay, sometimes it rains. We’ll admit it. But you don’t need to wait for rain for a guilt-free excuse to take the car for a spin. The most amazing scenery lies within easy reach of Westport, and for many, the only way to get to see it is behind the wheel.

Head south to Killary Harbour, Ireland’s only natural fjord, and the village of Leenane (where Jim Sheridan filmed John B Keane’s classic ‘The Field’). The more direct route (around 40 mins/37km) brings you out the N59, gently winding through some truly stunning landscapes. The Sheeffry and Partry Mountains rise dramatically from farm and bogland, and soon you’ll be greeted with the first glimpse of the fjord, before reaching Leenane on its shores. Drink in the majestic sight of Mweelrea Mountain, the highest point in the province of Connacht, and maybe take a boat cruise along the fjord!
Take a different, slightly longer route home (around an hour, 43km), taking a left after Leenane to the picturesque Aasleagh (Ashleigh) Falls on the River Erriff before travelling through the Delphi Valley and stunning and history-laden Doolough Pass flanked steeply by Mweelrea and the Sheeffrys. You’ll emerge on the coast road and wind your back to Westport via Louisburgh and Murrisk, with the sea lapping the shore to your left.

Take the 30k spin north to Letterkeen, on the edge of Ballycroy National Park. The 40-minute drive will bring you through Newport, and then on through the breathtaking lake-filled landscape of Furnace, before taking you higher through Shramore and up into the Nephin Beg mountains. Deep into mountainous forestry to Brogan Carroll Bothy, an old stone hut that was rebuilt in recent years and marks the start of several forest and river trails – should you feel like stretching your legs. Take the same route back to Westport, or loopback by Keenagh, Lough Beltra, Croaghmoyle Natural Heritage Area and Glenisland (50 minutes).

The dramatic 40-minute drive south to Tawnyard Wood takes you to an area known by some locals as ‘Little Canada’.
At Liscarney, around 8km along the N59 Leenane Road, take a right towards the picturesque village of Drummin. You’ll cross Sheeffry Bridge before zig-zagging up the steep mountainside that yields wonderful views of the valley below. The road then curves around Tawnyard mountain to the right before descending to the Tawnyard forest carpark.
Just below Tawnyard mountain and above Tawnyard Lough, the lodgepole pine forest offers stunning views of the lake below and surrounding mountains – the Sheefry Hills to the north, Mweelrea to the west and Ben Gorm to the southwest.

Take a drive up through the lunar landscape of the ‘Ballycroy badlands’ to Blacksod point on the Mullet Peninsula. At an hour and 40 minutes, it means slightly longer behind the wheel, but by the end of it, you’ll feel like you’ve travelled through several countries.
Passing through Newport, you’ll take a right at Mulranny. Flanked by the steep heather-covered Nephin Beg foothills to the right and the blue waters of Bellacragher Bay to the left, then it’s on through the vast and pristine Ballycroy National Park landscape, where wild and open Atlantic blanket bog gives way to even wilder mountainous terrain. Heading further north still, cross over onto Mayo’s most westerly point, the 33km-long Mullet Peninsula, which curls around to face back towards Achill Island. Along its eastern side, discover beautiful Elly beach, while at its tip lies Blacksod lighthouse. In June 1944, this granite lighthouse changed the course of history by issuing a weather report that saved World War II’s D-Day invasion from potential disaster.

Instead of taking the N59 north from Mulranny to Blacksod, take the R319 and you’ll hit Achill Island, connected to the mainland by a spectacular bridge that looks like whale ribs floating over the sea. Ireland’s largest offshore island is a magical paradise to explore by car – turquoise waters lap beautiful beaches, seabirds wheel around sheer craggy cliffs, scattered villages offer welcomes and refreshments, the stone remains of the Deserted Village poignantly hark back to harder times, and high on a hill, the controversial ‘Achillhenge’ stands defiantly tall. Just an hour from Westport, but light years away from the rat race.

Sometimes you don’t need a destination. Take the Newport Road out of Westport, and take a left towards Carrowholly and Kilmeena to spend the day meandering along the many boreens and backroads of the indented coastline, discovering hidden coastal gems like Inishgort, Rosmoney and Inishcuttle. Don’t forget to take a picnic!
