Are the adult beverage tastings worth it anymore?

My booking window opened a couple of weeks ago and I rushed to salvage the resie scraps that were available being a newbie cruiser. Now, with a cold head, I’m beginning to wonder if the tastings are even worth it in 2022 given that they are twice as expensive as before. All the old reviews seem to focus how it is a good deal despite drinking “supermarket” alcohol. My local wine shop offers killer tastings for just $20 and I don’t know if I want to waste $45pp to get a sip of Barcardi or Barefoot-like wine just because “it’s Disney”.

Any thoughts? What am I missing?

image

I can tell you that the champagne tasting was amazing

Champagne: yes Margarita/tequila: yes Rum: maybe - I love rum and they had some STRONG rums! Lol Martini: yes

They do offer many higher shelf options for the tastings. The object is for you to want to order them by the glass or bottle later on. So they’re not gonna showcase the cheap stuff.

The wine tasting was not Barefoot. It was high end bottles of wine. They aren’t serving swill. We did Mixology and Wine tasting last year. We’ve booked both of those again plus the bourbon tasting. Even with the increases in prices I still think they will be worth it. I’m anxious to see what bourbons they serve as I live in Kentucky–the home of bourbon-- and in the city known as the Bourbon Capital of the World.

My hubby did the expensive Whiskey one and he was NOT impressed with the man’s knowledge. He said he spewed inaccurate information (my husband is a whiskey collector). There were some good choices but one of DH was really unhappy that the man had ruined this rare whiskey but adding apricots and something else to it and letting it sit. He told the man it tasted like orange fanta. LOL The man at the dining table next to us in our rotational dining was also a whiskey drinker and was chatting it up with hubby as he had done the regular whiskey tasting
it did not sound like that one had anything really worth going out of your way for. Hubby did find a fantastic Scotch flight for $60 that he said was a steal in the The Rose bar in the adult dining area.

I am working on becoming a first time DCL cruiser as well and have been contemplating the same types of questions
but when I look at your list with the price today vs. before, it just looks to me like the standard mark up on everything over the last year. eg Distilled water was 89 cents per gallon and now it is $1.39. Somewhere around 50% price increase seems standard

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I have tempered my expectations and cancelled some of the less interesting tastings but kept the other ones. The consensus seems to be that it is no longer a great deal like before but still a good deal.

My local liquor store didn’t increase prices by 50% even if water did so I’m not quite ready to become an inflation apologist just to line up Chapek’s pockets with my money.

My first cruise was last week, on the Dream. I considered the tequila and margarita tasting, but decided not to book it since I was worried about too much to drink in a short time, and not wanting to be tied to schedules. However, I found a bartender that I really enjoyed (respected his knowledge of his craft) and he mentioned he was leading that tasting the next day, so I signed up. We learned a lot and had some good drinks. I’m happy I did it, but it was very situation specific.

You say this was your first time cruising. How was your overall experience? DCL for life or willing to try others?

I would likely cruise other lines, in addition to more DCL cruises. I’m not sure who the other lines will be, but I’m open to others. I have an aunt and uncle that like cruising, but not DCL, so I could see joining them. And the friends I went with last week are DCL loyalists, plus I bought a bounce back, so I’m sure that will happen again

@jesstmu totally off subject but what movies were playing in the theater? We leave on the Fantasy October 8 and DS was wondering.

Unfortunately, I can’t help. We didn’t watch a single movie, or even consider it much. It was a 4 night cruise, so not nearly enough time to do it all

Worth It? Complete Guide to MSC Cruises Drink Packages

Sailing on MSC and ready to really go on vacation? Then you might start with a drink package . Instead of worrying about the price of your bar bill, you can pay one set daily fee and get your drinks included for the entire cruise.

MSC ship at Ocean Cay with lighthouse

On the surface, the MSC drink packages are pretty simple. You pay the daily cost, and you get to drink your fill of whatever you want. However, with any drink package there are always a lot of options, fine print, and caveats.

To help you sort through the details and make sure you get the right deal for you, we’ve covered all the ins and outs of MSC’s drink packages below. This includes how to figure if the package is worth it for your cruise.

In This Article...

What Drink Packages Are Offered on MSC?

Following a revamp in late 2021, MSC has a total of five drink packages. Of these, three are alcoholic packages and two are non-alcoholic.

Alcoholic Packages MSC offers several different options for those wanting to drink their fill of cocktails and beer on the ship. This includes the Easy Package, the Easy Plus Package, and the Premium Extra Package.

Easy Package: This deal offers selected drinks aboard the ship. Your options are somewhat limited, but it does include some beers, well cocktails, house wines, soft drinks, juices, bottled mineral water, and coffees. (A sample of the included drinks is shown later in this article.)

Easy Plus Package: A step above the Easy Package is the Easy Plus Package. This package offers drinks up to $10 per glass. Here you’ll find a much wider selection with cocktails, wines, and beers, as well as sodas, juices, energy drinks, and more.

Premium Extra Package: MSC’s top-of-the-line package is called Premium Extra. With this package (which is also the most expensive) you get drinks by the glass up to $16 each. This package is the most similar to drink packages found on other lines where you have the widest number of options across the ship. If you want a beer, cocktail, wine, specific brands of liquor, water, coffee, energy drinks, juices, and more, it’s almost surely included in this offer.

Non-Alcoholic Packages MSC also has two non-alcoholic packages that feature drinks across the ship that don’t have alcohol. This includes non-alcoholic cocktails, soda, energy drinks, juice, water, coffees, tea, and even ice cream. They are known as the Alcohol-Free Package and the Minors Package . These appear to have the same beverages offered, but a cheaper price for those under 21 sailing from the United States.

How Much do MSC Drink Packages Cost?

Each of the packages has a different cost, ranging from as little as $21 per day to $104 per day at last price check. Note that prices can change at any time. You’ll see the latest prices when you book your cruise.

The most recent pricing we’ve seen is:

  • Easy Package: $49 per person, per day
  • Easy Plus Package: $64 per person, per day
  • Premium Extra Package: $88 per person, per day
  • Alcoholic-Free Package: $30 per person, per day (21+ years old); $21 per person, per day (3-20 years old)

As well, you receive a 15% discount if you purchase the package before sailing. That means you can save a substantial amount if you simply pre-purchase the package ahead of time versus waiting until on the ship.

One note: Unlike other cruise lines, MSC does not charge a gratuity on top of the price of the package. So the price you see is that you pay each day.

Is Gratuity Included? Do I Need to Tip More?

Yes, gratuity is included in the cost of the package, according to MSC. So the price you see is the price you’ll pay.

And once at the bar, you don’t have to worry about additional charges or gratuity. It is already taken care of. You can tip more if you feel generous, but it’s not expected or required.

You should note that if you use the package to buy a drink while in port, you may be charged tax on the purchase.

Do I Have to Buy the Package For Each Day of the Cruise?

Yes. MSC requires guests who want the package to buy it for every day. You can’t purchase for single days. So if your cruise is a week, you’ll be charged for seven days, whether you have 10 drinks in a day or don’t drink anything at all.

Keep this in mind when considering the drink package. If you have a cruise with several days in port, you’ll still pay for the package even if you are off the ship and don’t use it (with the exception of Ocean Cay, where the package works on the island).

Also note that the package is not charged for debarkation day when your cruise arrives back home.

Does Every Person in a Cabin Have to Buy It If One Person Does?

Yes. MSC says that all guests sailing in a cabin must purchase the drink package if one person does. According to the terms posted on MSC’s website :

“Packages must be booked by all guests occupying the same cabin, and who are traveling together and wishing to dine at the same table. This includes minors, for whom the Minors Package must be booked. Packages are not obligatory for infants under three years of age.”

This is likely designed to limit sharing (one person buying the package and then getting drinks for someone without the package).

It’s important to note that this extends to kids as well. So if you are traveling with a minor that is three years or older, then you will have to purchase the non-alcoholic beverage package for them. There is a $21 cost for those under 21 years old.

Kids under three don’t have to get a drink package.

What’s Included/Not Included in the Packages?

Each package is different in what it does and does not include. You can view the complete list of what’s included for each package on MSC’s website .

Here’s a breakdown for each:

Easy Package (select drinks) Includes one brand of draft beer (Heineken) and/or bottled Miller Lite, well cocktails and non-alcoholic cocktails, house wines, soft drinks, juice, bottled mineral water, coffees, and hot chocolate.

Note: The Easy Package can’t be used in specialty restaurants. No drink packages can be used in MSC’s “signature venues,” which it says include “Venchi 1878 establishments, Lavazza Coffee Shops, Jean Philippe Chocolate, Coffee, Crepes & Gelato, Starship Club, Hola! Tacos & Cantina.”

Easy Plus Package (Up to $10 per drink) The Easy Plus Package includes everything in the Easy Package above, but has more options given the higher price ceiling. You’ll find a wide array of beers (around 20 beers, compared to two in the Easy Package), more cocktails, more wine by the glass and liquors. Specialty coffees, energy drinks, and canned soft drinks are also included. As well, drinks in specialty restaurants are available with this package.

Premium Extra Package (Up to $16 per drink) If you want the traditional drink package experience where you get your run of practically anything on the ship, then the Premium Extra Package may be ideal for you. It covers drinks on the ship up to $16 per glass. So you get any beer on the ship (as with the Easy Plus offer), most liquor brands, cocktails across the menu (including high-end cocktails), specialty coffees, juices, energy drinks, and more.

Alcoholic-Free/Minors Package If alcohol isn’t your thing or you are sailing with kids, then you might be interested in the non-alcoholic package. It offers non-alcoholic cocktails, sodas, energy drinks, juices, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate.

This package doesn’t apply to the specialty restaurants, unless it’s for a minor whose group purchased the Easy Plus or Premium Extra alcoholic package.

Does the Drink Package Work on Ocean Cay?

Coconut drink on MSC's Ocean Cay

Ocean Cay is MSC’s private island ( see our complete guide to the island here ), and yes, the MSC drink package works on Ocean Cay just as it does on the ship.

Since cruises aboard MSC from Florida typically include a stop here, it’s an extra day that you can get your money’s worth from buying the drink package. Simply head up to any of the numerous bars on the island and place your order.

One thing to keep in mind is that the menu on the island may be slightly different than what’s found on the ship.

Is There a Daily Limit on How Many Drinks I Can Get?

There is no mention of a daily limit on drinks mentioned with the packages. That said, if you appeared overserved, then don’t be surprised if the cruise line decides to refuse service.

Be sure to mix in some waters with those margaritas during your cruise!

I Bought the Free Drinks & Wi-Fi Offer. Which Drink Package Do I Get?

Currently, MSC is running an offer with drinks and wi-fi included with your cruise. In the case that you book this, you will be provided with the Easy Plus Drink Package (which offers drinks up to $10 per glass).

What Drinks Are Available With the Easy Package? What About Drinks $10 and Under for Easy Plus?

While the Easy Package is attractive at just $49 per day, many people wonder what alcoholic drinks are available. This used to be for drinks priced $6 or under. Now MSC labels the package as including “select drinks.”

According to the chart on MSC’s website, this includes a “draft beer” and Miller Lite, house wines, well drinks, as well as classic cocktails, mixed drinks with well spirits.

To give you a better idea, of what that means, below is a menu with low-priced simple mixed cocktails like a Moscow Mule, Long Island Iced Tea, Mojito, and more that would be available. These are the sort of drinks that would be included. Take a look:

As for beers, most are priced at $7.50, but you can get draft Heineken with the Easy Package.

Your options are much greater under the Easy Plus Package that includes drinks up to $10. Here you get a much wider selection of beers and cocktails, as well as the ability to get drinks with name-brand liquors. For example, beers like Budweiser, Dos Equis, Sam Adams, Guinness, and Blue Moon are included (along with many more).

As well, you get more liquor brands as well. Just one example is that while the Easy Package offers well whiskey, the Easy Plus package offers brands like Crown Royal, Jim Beam, and Johnnie Walker. You also get more cocktail choices, like Contemporary Classics:

As for the $10 limit, that seems to have the largest impact on the cocktails and wines by the glass. There, the limit does come into play on some more unique/high-end cocktails and more expensive wines. For instance, the cocktails shown below would not available with the Easy Plus Package, but are with the highest-end Premium Extra Package:

What if I Buy a Drink Above the Dollar Limit for the Package?

Say you really want to try the Mango Mojito — priced at $13 — but only have the Easy Plus Package that’s good for drinks up to $10. Do you have to pay full price?

On MSC, you are given a discount and only pay the difference between the per drink allotment and the menu price. So in this case, you would only pay $3 for the higher-priced drink.

The discount is $8 per drink for the Easy Package, $10 per drink for the Easy Plus Package, and $16 per drink for the Premium Extra Package.

Who Is Each Package Best For?

Not sure which package is right for you? The three options are very different, which can make things a little confusing.

Easy Package: The most restrictive package, we’d suggest this offer for people who don’t mind a smaller number of options. The unique, fancy cocktails aren’t included, but you can get classics like Rum & Coke, or a Moscow Mule. House wines, fountain sodas and premium coffee are also included. So if you aren’t a big alcohol drinker or don’t need a lot of variety, then this package might be good for you.

Easy Plus Package: This package is best for beer drinkers and those who favorite mid-tier liquors. One of the biggest differences between the Easy Plus and Easy Packages is the beer lineup. The lower-tier Easy Package has only two alcoholic beers included. The Easy Plus offer has more than 20 included.

As well, there are more name-brand liquors available for drinks, including Jameson, Tito’s, Captain Morgan, 1800 Reposado, and dozens more. However, some menu options (specifically cocktails) are over the $10 per glass limit, restricting choices somewhat. Even so, you’d still be able to find something that you like given the number of choices.

Premium Extra: If you’re looking for the classic drink package experience where you have nearly everything on the ship included, then you’ll want the Premium Extra. Not only do you get what’s included in the Easy Plus Package, but there are also more liquor brands included. As well, you have the greatest number of cocktail options included, as well as the most wines by the glass. It definitely offers the most options, making it better for those who like “higher end” drinks.

The cost for MSC’s highest-tier package ($88 per person, per day) is in line with what many other cruise lines charge for their packages.

Is the MSC Drink Package Worth It?

For some people the drink package is a great way to save money. For others, it can be a waste as you’ll spend more than you would otherwise. In general, we think many people that buy an MSC drink package will get their money’s worth due to the relatively affordable cost — although the price has increased recently, making the deal a little less attractive than it used to be.

Before you buy the package, it’s important that you do the math and think about how you will use it.

The first thing to do is figure out what sort of drinks you’ll want on the cruise and how many per day.

Beer drinker? Most beers run about $7-8 each. If you plan to drink five a day, then that’s $35-$40, compared to the $64 per day for the Easy Plus Package (price before the cruise) that’s needed to purchase them.

Cocktail prices vary widely, with some well drinks being $7-8, but many more options available in the $10-14 range.

But you also don’t want to forget other drinks that you might have, including non-alcoholic drinks. To give you an idea of what things cost, we have general prices below that we’ve seen:

  • Beers: ~$7-$8
  • Cocktails: ~$7-$16
  • Soda: ~$3.50
  • Juice: ~$3.50
  • Energy Drinks: ~$4.50-$5
  • Bottled Water (Spring & Sparkling): ~$3.25-$6.50
  • Coffees: ~$3.00-$5

Beyond considering how much you will drink each day, consider the number of ports of call on your cruise. Remember that you can’t use the package while off the ship, unless you are visiting Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island. There, you can use the package on the ship while it is in port.

If you’re the sort of person who likes to get out and explore, then that’s a lot of time that you won’t be able to use the package.

Finally, remember that if one person buys a drink package, then everyone in the cabin has to buy it. So if you are a couple and one person drinks and the other doesn’t, then it’s going to be much harder to get your money’s worth.

The drink package rule also applies to kids that are three years and older. Be sure to add in these costs when making your decision on if the package is worth the money.

To help you plan, we put together a drink package calculator that you can use to estimate what you’ll spend.

How much is going to cost me to get a glass of wine for my dinner?(I don’t have any liquor plans)

It will depend on the wine, but expect it to run $8-$20 per glass.

Is there kosher wine on the menu?

That I’m not sure about!

Thanks for your article. Some questions for you about easy package: 1) Include alcoholic aperitives? (Bacardi Breezer and similars) 2) Include any cocktel with chocolate licor or any licor of chocolate or cream similar to Bayleys? Thanks for all!

Does MSC offer any non-alcoholic beverage (water, juice, soda) as part of the price? What happens if you don’t buy the drinks package? Is there any beverage included as part of the rate?

There is a 15 drink limit only for alcoholic beverages on Princess.

My partner mostly drinks prosecco. What level of package do we need to gdt so the prosecco is included?. I am happy to drink whatever is going 😉

How much are the ice creams and soft drinks for?

I am looking at the MSC Australia website. It says the easy plus package is $560 per adult. Is this Australian currency or USD

Could you provide the 2023 price list for alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks in order to figure out if is worthed or not to buy any of the beverage packages?

Headed on MSC in a couple of weeks. Will offer some update soon after!

There is a liquor store available on a ship. Can we purchase and consume?

No. The duty-free store that sells alcohol will package it up and hold it for you until the last night of the cruise.

If one of the guests in the room is pregnant could they get the nonalcoholic and the other person get the drink package? I know I will probably need to call just curious if it’s an option or no because the same room

You’ll need to call, but at least with other cruise lines this is usually possible.

On Princess all adults must purchase a beverage package in the same cabin even if its a soda or coffee package to go with another guest beverage package.

We have booked a cruise that includes the Easy Plus drinks package. I will probably pay the additional amount for the Premium Extra Package
. Will my wife have to upgrade also? She is more than satisfied with drinks on the Plan included?

Oh, that one I’m not sure about. If you find out, would you mind sharing what happened?

Good Day (once again), We have an Easy-Plus package, can you tell me if the drinks in the mini-fridge in our room are included with our drink package. Thank you

They are not.

We are leaving this Sunday on a 7-night MSC cruise. We prepurchased the Easy Plus Package. My travelling partner is concerned that the well drinks will not be of good enough quality. Do you have any way of checking which brands are included in each of the higher level packages? Thanks.

Sure, check out this page:

https://www.msccruisesusa.com/on-board/dining-drinks/drink-comparison-chart

Hello, thank you very much for the info. Just 1 quick question, I know the drink package works on Ocean Cay, but just to make sure, does the easy plus package works w/ the smiling fish and coffee bar (specifically the coffee bar)?

Hi, is it true that there’s a limit of how many times you can drink with the drink package? I heard 15 times per day??

On Carnival/Princess, there is a 15 drink limit. We know of no such limit for MSC.

Tanner, if my drink package includes up to $15 alcohol and I order $17 alcohol, will I be charged the difference in price or the full $17?

That I’m not sure about. I will be sure to ask the next time I am on MSC!

I have seen a few youtubers in the recent sailings confirming that MSC does it differently. It charges full price, not the difference.

I personally has never sailed w/ MSC before, but do have a sailing coming up in a few months, I can double check.

Thank you so much for posting the individual prices on drinks, Tanner. You’ve helped me decide not to get a drink package. Makes no sense being off the boat at excursions all day! Am I understanding this correctly- I’m cruising to Spain, Italy, and France and if I buy a local wine during the day, I can’t come back and enjoy it on my very expensive balcony in my very expensive room at night because they will confiscate said wine until the end of the cruise? (side eye on this).

That’s my understanding, however, rules may be different in Europe!

Can we buy a bottle of wine per day or do we need to pay by the glass?

Which drinks package applies from South Africa to Venice if anyone knows?

Can you bring non alcoholic drinks on board that you purchase in port? (Ie. Juice/soda) Is there a fridge in the room to keep drinks?

To my knowledge, MSC doesn’t allow you to bring on beverages. So if you bring them, they will be held until the end of the cruise and returned. There should be a small fridge in your cabin.

Hi there, what drinks are included in the free drinks and wifi package?

We have an Easy Plus Package included with our cruise, and have prepaid the “Hotel Service Charges”. Will we still have to pay the 15% Bar Service Charge every time we have an alcoholic drink over and above what is included in the package price?

No, that 15% is already included.

We’re about to go on our cruise in a couple weeks and have one question I haven’t seen yet. While coming from different places across the US and even out of the US, we’re meeting up with five other couples that are family or friends. We’ve been able to arrange us being grouped for dinners together. One couple in the group believes this means ALL parties (2 per cabin) would be forced to buy the same drink package. Any idea?

Did you all buy your cruise as one group or separately? I would think that the requirement to buy the package if another person does would apply only to those in the same cabin, or at most those who bought the cruise together. So if all the couples purchased cabins apart from each other, I doubt you’d have to all get the package.

We all booked individually and have our own booking numbers. I have tried talking to MSC on the phone and get disconnected when the initial people can’t answer without speaking to someone else. I haven’t received any calls back either, pretty sure all my information is in front of them on their computer screen. Anyway, too late to book a drink package at this point so I’ll have to wait until we board to ask in person. I will update this thread to help any others that have the same question.

If all of you are going to seat at the same table all of you must have the same drink package. You can find this exactly information at msc website.

Any updates on this Brad? Thx!

I believe its house wine in the package. I would be nice to know what is there house wine

Does MSC check your bags before boarding after a shore excursion?

Yes, every cruise line checks when you return to the ship.

Which brand is the energy drink thats included in the package? thank you.

Not sure on that one. Will check the next time onboard.

REd Bull 250ml

Do any of the packages include the cabin mini-bar? If not, is there price list available?

MSC says the mini-bar is not included in any packages.

Hello. If I have the easy plus drink package it seems to cover drinks up to $9. If I want a more expensive drink a time or two, does MSC allow you to get it with the package and pay the difference?

I believe MSC has a different policy that means the entire drink costs extra. So a $12 drink costs $12, not $3. However, that might have changed.

So just to be 100% clear, you don’t have to buy a drinks package with them, you can just purchase as you want if you aren’t a big drinker?

That’s correct.

I would check into this. I did some research, and it appears that you can purchase dinks on the ship. You have a gratutity added to the price. The drinks package has this already included. Trust me, they do not want to leave money on the table. If someone wants to buy something from them, they will allow it. Again, I would reach out directly to MSC to ask just to be sure.

What about if i want just rum nd no coke, thats the tricky part. They put more coke than rum and the the drink is undrinkable.

This may be where finding a bartender, tipping them well at the beginning of the cruise, and then going back to visit them may help get a drink mixed how you like it!

Can you take you bring your drink in the pool? And can you drink while sitting down watching a show on the auditorium?

Sure. In fact, there are bars at the pool.

If you have the Easy or Easy Plus drink package, and you want to get a drink on the premium list, do you have to pay the full list price? Or do you get any sort of discount?

I believe it is full price, however, not 100%. Haven’t done it personally and heard conflicting things.

This was really helpful, thank you! I was wondering can one person in the room get the easy package and the other person get the easy plus package? Or do they both have to get the higher option?

What drinks are included with NO package purchase?

Basic drinks like water, tea, coffee and flavored drinks.

hi, great read thank you just a few questions if you buy a drink either water coffee or beer can you bring to your room? how do they know what package you are on do you have a card? if you buy no package and just buy as you go do you have to tip? is water free any where on the ship with out any package or is it only by bottle and has to be paid for ? surely they have to supply water ? thanks again

– Yes, you can bring drinks back to the room – Your card may have a sticker on it, or when they scan it, the drink package will show up – If you buy as you go, a gratuity will automatically be applied to the menu price – You can get water around the ship. The easiest place is the buffet, but you can also get a glass from the bars.

Would it be easier to either bring a refillable bottle with you or just purchase a bottle of water and then refill it? Also, I read that the water is mineral water. So, wouldn’t that be different from distilled or spring? Would kids balk at the taste?

I’d suggest just bringing a refillable bottle. Holds more than the little cups you get at the buffet and you don’t have to head to a bar for a bottle each time.

I read that the kid’s package also includes soft server ice cream. Is that true? Also, when can you choose the drink packages (how many days after you reserve your cruise)?

Yes, it included soft-serve ice cream.

Are you not able to reserve? How long is your cruise? I’ve had the same issue and a call to MSC told me that you couldn’t buy a package before if the cruise was under 4 days long. (Mine is 3 days).

It’s not showing up, but maybe it’s because the cruise isn’t until March of 2024. So, they are probably waiting to publish the packages closer to sailing.

Can you purchase a drink package on a 3 day cruise

Yes, should be available.

no-minimum 4 days to be able to buy a drinks package

Thanks a lot for this complete review on the drinking package. Just realized they are not worth it. Saved me a lot of money. =)

I think the biggest part that may not make it worth it is having to get a drink package for the kids. My kids don’t drink soda or energy drinks. I don’t think it’s worth it for us, but we have until May to figure that out.

There are 3 of us sailing, The Mrs with me and the Grand daughter. We are not interested in the drinks packages for ourselves but can we purchase the kids one just for the Grand daughter. T.I.A

This is the most detailed and probably up-to-date breakdown of MSC drink packages I have seen. Makes a lot of sense now and I know what I’m getting myself into now. Thank you!

If you buy the Easy Package and you want to buy a $10 drink, can you? If so, are you charged $10 or the difference, $4?

Our understanding is that MSC charges the full price for a drink over the package limit. So in your example, you’d be charged $10.

Thanks for this great information. The most complete and concise explanation and comparison.

Drinks like Mud Slide, Bahama Mama, Miami Vice are they the Easy or Premium package?

You’ll want the higher package. The drinks on the Easy Package largely consist of simple two ingredient cocktails like rum and Coke, Cape Cod (cranberry vodka), etc.

Hello, so i know that each person in the cabin has to order a drink package. Will my husband be able to buy the Premium drink package, myself the Easy drink package and our daughter (19) the soda package? Regards, Rhonda

I believe you and your husband will need to get the same level drink package. Since your daughter is under 21, she can get the soda package.

When I was looking at ordering the drink package, it made me select the same drink package for me and my wife. They kids had to get the minors package.

What kinds of wines are included in the easy package.

Great question. I just looked through all the photos of menus taken onboard and don’t see a wine list anywhere.

I do notice that MSC makes no mention of wine in the Easy Package, but they do in the Premium Package. It could be that you need to have the Premium Package to have wines included.

i see in the basic non alcholic package it references coffee isnt coffee free in the buffet room

Yes. It likely means premium coffees.

Flight of Parched Pig Beers at the Brewery Tour on the Carnival Horizon

Taking a Brewery Tour on a Carnival Ship

Last Updated on August 6, 2022

Microbrewing and craft beer have seen an explosion of interest over the last few years. Interest has bubbled over from just a niche audience to a much more mainstream appeal. Carnival noticed that its guests weren’t happy with just standard beer offerings and in 2016, introduced the first brewery at sea aboard the Carnival Vista in the RedFrog Pub & Brewery. It was the first time custom brews were made at sea, and in the following years, breweries were added to the Carnival Horizon and Carnival Panorama as part of Guy’s Pig and Anchor Smokehouse.

Carnival offers you the complete craft beer experience by providing brewery tours during the cruise. It’s almost a “hidden” tour; you barely see it mentioned except for one line, “ParchedPig Brewery Tour” in the FunTimes, but if you’re a beer enthusiast, it’s totally worth it.

What is the brewery tour?

The Parched Pig Brewery Tour is a 2-hour session where the ship’s brewmaster will walk you through the process of making beer, explain how the program started, give you a tour of the facility, and let you taste 5 beers. At the end of the session, you receive a parched pig souvenir glass and a voucher for a free beer later that week.

How much does the Carnival brewery tour cost?

The tour is only $30 per person, and, in my opinion, it’s totally worth it. It’s a steal considering that you get to sample all 4 draft beers, plus the seasonal brew. If you want to try all the beers, this is the way to go. The 16 oz pours are typically $6.75 each, so this is cheaper, AND you get an extra beer later on and souvenir glass.

How to go on the Carnival brewery tour

Usually, if you’re looking to do an activity on the ship, you book it online or through the Carnival Hub app in advance. The brewery tour is different; you have to wait until you’re on board and sign-up manually. To sign up, you just talk to the bartender at the Guy’s Pig and Anchor Smokehouse and sign your name and room number on a sheet.

Flavortown Bar on Carnival Horizon

The brewery tour was high on our list of activities and one of the reasons we were excited about the Carnival Horizon, so we high-tailed it to Guy’s Pig and Anchor Smokehouse on Deck 5 as soon as we boarded the ship. The bartenders were all busy, so we walked through the restaurant and went outside for the free BBQ lunch on the Lanai. Once we filled up on some delicious BBQ ( see the menu here ), we went inside and talked to the bartender about the tour. At that point, they didn’t have the sign-up sheet yet, so we went back after dinner that evening.

When we went back, they had a sign-up sheet ready, and the tour was on the next day at 2:30 pm. They said if there’s enough demand, they add additional times on the other sea days, so you shouldn’t have a problem booking a tour.

The brewery tour experience

Guys Pig and Anchor on the Carnival Horizon

We started by going to Guy’s Pig and Anchor Smokehouse a little before 2:30 pm. Unlike excursions, you don’t get any tickets to your cabin, so you have to remember when it is. There wasn’t much direction, but we saw a few people in the back of the restaurant, so we walked there. About 7 tables of 4 were arranged with a reserved sign and flight glasses, so we knew we were in the right place.

The brewmaster showed up a little after 2:30 and kicked off the tour. He used to be employed by Brew Hub, the company in Lakeland, Florida, that first developed the beers with Carnival. He took over the position as brewmaster on the Horizon when the original brewmaster moved to the new Carnival Panorama to set it up. The brewmaster was not “corporate” at all; he was a laid-back guy who just focused on making some great beers for the guests.

The brewmaster kicked off the tour by having us sit down at the tables. A majority of the 2-hours is actually spent sitting at the tables and sampling the beer; the production facilities themselves are relatively small, so they don’t take long to go through. As he talked through his points, he poured some pitchers of beer and passed them around. Every two tables, or about 8 people, split a pitcher, so there was A LOT of beer to go around.

Flight of Parched Pig Beers at the Brewery Tour on the Carnival Horizon

The brewmaster started by explaining how beer is made. If you’ve been on a brewery tour before, it’s something you’re probably well aware of, but he tells it in an interesting way. Then he explained how beer is made on the Horizon specifically, from scheduling to brewing.

After we tasted all the beers, we looked at the facilities. First, we saw the beautiful copper kettle out front, where they boil the mash. Then, we went into the cooler to see the beers in the fermenting vessels. It’s a relatively small room and barely fit the whole group. We finished the tour by getting our free glasses and certificate for a free beer.

Key takeaways from the brewery tour

  • The brewery onboard concept started when Carnival tried to overhaul their whole drink program to get away generic drinks. If you notice, on Carnival, each bar now a separate menu with unique beverages and offerings. It started with the higher popular Alchemy Bar and has continued since then.
  • Brewing on board is not that different from brewing on land. The biggest difference is all the certifications and paperwork he needs when disposing of the waste.
  • This Brewery only uses malt, hops, water, and yeast. They don’t add other flavorings like fruit or additives.
  • The Brewery only makes a portion of the beer on the ship. For other venues, the cans or draft are bottled by the Brew Hub brewery in Florida.
  • Each ship has a dedicated brewmaster who keeps up production during the cruise and makes their own seasonal offering.

How were the Parched Pig beers?

Tap Handles for Parched Pig Beers

The general consensus was that Carniva’s Parched Pig beers were pretty good. They are definitely more complex than the canned domestic beers on board but not as innovative or unique as some other craft breweries. They did produce a solid beer, though that ranks relatively high on Untapped , an app for beer lovers.

Parched Pig Toasted Amber Ale

cruise beer review

Untapped Rating:  3.52

Description:  “Balanced and smooth, this versatile beer has a rich, toasty malt character with biscuit and caramel notes.”

My take:  It’s a beautiful amber color and was very smooth. The light caramel notes were definitely there.

Parched Pig Farmhouse Ale

cruise beer review

Untapped Rating:  3.55

Description:  “Refreshing and fruity with mild spice character. This complex beer with a dry finish is perfect for a hot summer day.”

My take:  Probably one of the best beers of the bunch for drinking on deck in the Caribbean. It’s light and dry, with a bit of fruitiness to it.

Parched Pig West Coast IPA

cruise beer review

Untapped Rating:  3.61

Description:  “High hop content makes this beer bitter and bright, with citrus and pine flavors and aroma notes.”

My take:  If you like hops or IPAs, this one is for you. It’s quite bitter, and you definitely get the citrus and pine coming through without it tasting like a bottle of Pine-Sol.

Parched Pig Smoked Porter

cruise beer review

Untapped Rating:  3.71

Description:  “A full-flavor robust beer. Brewer with roasted grain and malts smoked in our wood smokers on board.”

My take:  I’m not a porter fan at all, but this beer was my favorite. I was shocked how much I enjoyed it; in fact, I used my free coupon to get a full pour of it later on in the cruise. The smokiness really added depth, and it perfectly complemented the BBQ they served in Pig and Anchor Smokehouse.

Other Beers:

Depending on your sailing, there might be some other beers available. The Carnival Panorama has the Parched Pig Blond Lager, which has a 3.69 rating on Untapped. We’ve also tried the seasonal Christmas Dunkleweizen, a favorable, spicy blend that was probably great for the holidays (our cruise was in March, and they were just finishing off the last batch). They’ve also done a Pumpkin Ale for fall that people rave about.

What Carnival ships have the brewery tour?

This tour is available on the Carnival Horizon , Carnival Panorama , and Carnival Mardi Gras . It will also be available on the Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee when they launch.

There is a similar tour available on the Carnival Vista , but it’s at their Red Frog Pub & Brewery, where they brew the ThristyFrog beers, not Parched Pig.

Flavortown Bar on the Carnival Horizon Pig and Anchor Smokehouse and brewery

What beers do the other Carnival ships have?

3 cans of craft beer, Parched Pig and ThirstyFrog

If you’re not on a Carnival ship that has a brewery, don’t worry, you can still try quite a few of the custom Carnival beers. The Parched Pig West Coast IPA , Parched Pig Toasted Amber Ale , and Thirsty Frog Caribbean Wheat are available in cans and draft across the whole fleet. They also have a special Carnival Birthday Beer to celebrate their 50th anniversary and a new Beach Lager .

These beers are brewed by Brew Hub in Lakeland, FL, and then loaded on board. Want to stock up? You can pre-order these for your cabin at $24 for a 4-pack ( see listing here ).

What’s the difference between Parched Pig and ThirstyFrog?

Parched Pig is the name of the beers developed for Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse and are the ones brewed on the Horizon, Panorama, and Mardi Gras. The ThirstyFrog brand was the first beers developed to be brewed onboard the Carnival Vista. They have 4 standard beers available.

  • ThirstyFrog Red:  Light, clean, frothy, and a little bold, this craft beer offers balanced character and whispers of toasted malt.
  • ThirstyFrog Caribbean Wheat:  With hints of spice and orange, this brew is as sunny as the weather on a tropical cruise. With its crisp, refreshing flavor, you’ll want more than one on a hot day.
  • ThirstyFrog Java Stout:  Calling all coffee lovers: this stout beer features flavors of roasted java and dark chocolate for a bold, rich finish.
  • ThirstyFrog Port Hoppin’ IPA:  Between ports, nothing quenches the thirst of craft beer lovers like this extra-hoppy IPA. Hints of tropical fruit offer a delicious fragrance and flavor.

Review: Carnival Cruise Brewery Tour

Picture of Guest

  • September 5, 2018

You can get beer on just about any cruise ship, but Carnival was the first U.S.-based line to take the brilliant step of putting a craft brewery smack-dab in the middle of a cruise ship.

The beers brewed on board are not available anywhere else on the planet, but of course, that only matters if what’s being served up is a quality product.

To find out just how Carnival’s brewery stacked up, I registered for the tour to get the behind-the-scenes scoop and taste each of the varieties brewed on board.

carnival horizon brewery

CAUTION:  You definitely want to register, as there are only slots for 16 people on any given tour. PRO TIP:  If, when registering, they only offer you one time/date, it’s likely that other tours either are or will be scheduled. They like to try and fill the tours in chronological order. Ask to be slated for one of the later tours, and while it’s not guaranteed, it’s likely that enough others will register for that tour to ensure it won’t be canceled.

A Brief History of Carnival’s Craft Beers

Carnival Vista cruise ship

Carnival originally began brewing beer on Vista back in 2016, rebranding the popular RedFrog Pub into the RedFrog Pub & Brewery. When that proved successful, they took things to the next level on Horizon , where they replaced the RedFrog Pub with the Pig & Anchor Smokehouse|Brewhouse.

Thanks to their ongoing partnership with celebrity chef Guy Fieri, the new venue would offer a wide variety of food (with an emphasis on barbecue) as well as four Parched Pig brews.

About the Tour

Carnival Horizon Pig & Anchor

Ever done a brewery tour where you spend an hour exploring the facility, learning about the process and then, finally, get to sample the beer?

Well, it probably won’t surprise you to learn that Carnival knows that while passengers are interested in the process, we’re really all about the beer. So right off the bat, things get rolling with a sample of one of the beers we’re about to learn about.

After receiving a sheet explaining the various beers we’d be sampling, the first brew – the Toasted Amber – was placed on the table in a pitcher from which we could help ourselves.

While we sipped the beer, Carnival’s brewmaster, Colin, talked to us about the process of brewing beer in general and what he does specifically, complete with a helpful accompanying chalkboard infographic. (And really, who doesn’t love a good infographic?)

For the record, the Toasted Amber is slightly malty and a great introduction to craft beers for those who might not be familiar with them.

PIG AND ANCHOR BREWERY

We learned about the four main ingredients in beer: malt (usually barley or wheat), hops, yeast, and water.

While Colin explained the differences between German and American beers (mostly involving the stricter ingredient guidelines in Germany, as opposed to American beers which can essentially go crazy when it comes to what’s added), we continued sipping our beers, proving my long-standing theory that it’s always more fun to learn when beer is involved.

There was also an interactive component as Colin passed around hops pellets for us to smell. (Much like your teacher had to tell that one kid in class not to eat the paste, Colin warned us that while the hops pellets smelled great, we wouldn’t want to taste them, as their primary purpose is to add bitterness to beers.)

Carnival Horizon craft beers

Next, Colin presented us with pitchers of the Farmhouse Ale. This is a great refreshing beer for hot weather – appropriate for the ship’s Caribbean destinations – which uses a Belgian yeast, setting it apart from the other beers brewed on board.

We learned about the specifics of this ale, more about the brewing process and were able to ask Colin any questions we might have. (It’s worth noting that not only is he good at what he does – as the beers you’ll sample prove – but he clearly loves what he does and is enthusiastic about sharing it with others.)

Colin handed out pieces of dried malted barley (which, unlike the hops, we were free to taste if we wanted). These had a slightly sweet, caramel-like flavor.

Next up came the third sample: the West Coast IPA, brewed with Centennial, Amarillo, and Simcoe hops. At this point, we all got up and went into what Colin referred to as “the cellar.”

It’s not actually downstairs, but gets its name from the days when beer was brewed in basements for temperature regulation, before things like electric heat and central air conditioning.

The cellar contains the fermentation and serving tanks. The fermentation tanks are where the yeast does its magic by turning sugar into alcohol and CO2. The serving tanks hold the finished beer and are connected directly to the taps at the bar.

We could actually hear the sound of it being pumped whenever one of the bartenders served a patron. Beer really doesn’t get any fresher than that!

READ MORE: Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Review

After we were done with our tour of the cellar, we returned to our tables for our 4th sample: the Smoked Porter. This one was crafted to have a hint of smokey flavor from the smoked malt that is added, making it a perfect complement to the Pig & Anchor Smokehouse’s menu selections.

beer cellar on Vista

We took our porters with us over to the brew kettle and mash tub, which sit outside the restaurant for all to see and marvel at as they walk past on the promenade.

Standard kettles are made of stainless steel, but for Carnival, Colin specifically chose unique ones made of glass so that you can see what’s going on inside. He also said that he tries to brew beer in the evening, so that passengers get a chance to watch the brewing process as they walk by.

We learned about the process the beer goes through as it goes from one kettle to the next. First, the malt is mixed with hot water to convert the starch from the grains into sugar. Then the liquid is drained from the grains, hops are added, and the mixture is brought to a boil.

Finally, the mixture is cooled and transferred to the cellar, where the yeast is added for fermentation.

We returned to our tables and learned that we were going to get a bonus sample: the seasonal beer currently on tap.

In honor of Horizon’s temporary stay in New York City, the seasonal on tap at the time was an apple beer (which we were told would basically be scoffed at in Germany), with cinnamon and other spices called “Big Apple Pie”… which was supposed to taste like apple pie, but I would say tasted more like cold mulled cider. I liked it a lot, but I can see where “beer purists” would definitely take issue with it.

Colin wrapped up the tour by handing out some swag. We each got a Thirsty Frog Red pint glass (which, should you want to buy a few more so you have a complete set, are available for purchase at the Red Frog Rum bar) and a certificate of completion “ideal for your man cave.”

We were also presented with the slips for us to sign for our payment of the tour ($24.95 each). With the certificate, we would be able to get one complimentary pint of Parched Pig beer of our choosing from the Pig & Anchor bar.

I was traveling with my husband and we didn’t really need two certificates, so I requested that both our names be on one. We did want two free beers, though, so Colin got clever with the Name field on our second one.

To get your free beer, you take the certificates to the bartender who initials the back to indicate you’ve collected your pint. With having just sampled a fair amount of beer, we opted to come back later that night to redeem our pints.

Final Thoughts

This was one of the best brewery tours I’ve ever experienced. Colin really encourages questions, so every tour is unique to what its tour group is interested in learning about the process.

This tour is ideal for home brewers, people with a passion for beer, or those simply looking for a fun and different way to spend a little time while also enjoying some tasty brews.

On Board Tastings

I booked my on board activities and port adventures but as silver level, didn't get some of my top choices for tastings. We did get Bourbon tasting, Cognac tasting, and Whiskey tasting. I'd like to hear opinions from those of you who have done any of these.

I'll add beer tasting to that question too.

sethschroeder

There are tons of videos out there which might help. This cruise was going to be our first tastings as well so watched a bunch of videos. Ultimately decided to just upgrade to concerige instead so we cancelled the tastings and excursions.

I am sure you have done this before but keep checking as things open up. Also if nothing opens up before you cruise when you get onboard you can often find openings. On the Fantasy you used to go to La Piazza and they would check the reservations and they almost always let me in.

Selections of a previous Bourbon Tasting (Pre pandemic): They offered 1.5 oz pours of Blanton's, Jack Daniels Sinatra, Larceny and Woodford Reserve. Everyone walked out of there buzzed and happy.

Perhaps my question wasn't clear. The opinions I'm looking for are how poi liked the tastings that I've listed (Beer, Cognac, Bourbon, and Whiskey). Did you like them? Were they fun? Would you do them again? Or did you not like them?

HiStitch626

Haven’t done cognac or bourbon, but we did whiskey couple of years ago on the Fantasy. It was in the Meridian bar in the evening and the atmosphere was just beautiful. We really enjoyed the tasting especially because we were not knowledgeable about whiskeys. I do not remember what we tried exactly, but I know that one was a blend, which I did not care for and one was a single malt that was 24 or 30 years old, and I thought that was pretty great.

Earning My Ears

I did a martini tasting with my mom neither of us like martinis but we had fun I think one tasted ok to us but the faces we made it was fun

Cruising Engineer

Cruising Engineer

We have enjoyed all the tastings, including beer (which I normally don't really like). The reason we keep signing up for them - no matter what ship - is the variety and education. Most of the samples are from well-known distilleries but the bottle is of much higher quality and cost than we would normally purchase for at the house. Some bottles are unique distilleries that are not in the shops here in NM. When the tastings are late in the evening, they are more educational than fun. Fun is very present in the mixology type tastings at two in the afternoon. I learn a lot about each pour, distinctive tastes, how it was produced, time in the barrel, etc. They are thoroughly enjoyable and we keep going back for more each cruise. And it's an opportunity to taste really good and really expensive spirits.

I've done the Bourbon tasting. I really enjoyed it because it introduced me to a new spirit as well as how to enjoy it properly. Bourbon has now become my go to liquor thanks to Disney! That is what the tastings are all about. Trying new things. As others have said the mixed drinks tend to be more fun and the single spirits more educational. I've done bourbon, wine, mixology, and martinis. I think you will enjoy the ones you are in.

I've also done a number of tastings including Whiskey, Bourbon, Mixology, Cognac, Rum & my personal favorite, the Mojito & Caipirinha. Both the Whiskey and Bourbon tastings were excellent and educational, although not the equivalent of taking a distillery tour itself...but really well done in a cruise ship environment (and that's coming from a KY boy who enjoys his bourbon). The Cognac and Rum tastings were in the Meridian lounge, which is my favorite place for tastings due to the atmosphere. I hadn't experienced cognac before, so I really found this one enlightening. However, Mixology & Mojito/Caipirinha turned out to be the most fun of the bunch, yet still plenty educational. As others have mentioned, there are many facets of tastings that play a role in one's enjoyment, so location is important and the crew member is critical in how fun and educational the tastings are. Also, some of the crew members will share recipes for their drinks and some add a twist of their own to some of the drinks. My final thought is that for the tastings I've enjoyed, I've had good friends and family participate as well...and no doubt, this enhanced the experience.

bedgraynexl said: I've done the Bourbon tasting. I've done pretty much all of the tastings and always had a good time. It does indeed depend greatly on your cast member who is doing the tastings, but it's usually a member of the bar staff who knows their stuff pretty well. They like to put a menu / check folio in front of the bottle for a "reveal" after people have guessed what certain liquors might be, so that's fun. Note that a lot of the hard liquor tastings are at 10:00pm on a lot of the ships, so you're going to be tight if you have second dining. And yes, you do leave "well lubricated" from those... :-D My absolute favorite has been the rum tastings - I'm a huge rum fan. But I've learned a lot at the whiskey, scotch, bourbon, etc tastings as well. Wasn't a huge fan of the mojito one, but my wife likes those, so we still had fun. Mixology is a lot of fun if you can get into it - it's very popular. On some of the longer cruises, they do chocolate and liquor tastings - HIGHLY recommend that. Insane what they can pair up there. And some of the best chocolate you'll ever have too. Cheers!

Beer on tap in The Retreat?

By JonoBhoy , April 5, 2022 in Celebrity Cruises

Cool Cruiser

Having not sailed in a couple of years now and not on celebrity in 5 years. We have just booked on on Edge, in the Retreat, for January 2023. One thing which I have always found lacking on most cruise ships is the ability to get a good draught beer/lager. It looks like there is a tap or two on the Retreat sun deck bar. Can someone confirm and also what is available?

Also, what tends to be the champagne on offer in The Retreat?

Great question!  We haven't been in the Retreat since return to sailing, but found that there is beer on tap (so to speak) in Craft Social on the S-class ships.

I was on Millie in February and there was not beer on tap in the Retreat.  Will be on Beyond in a few weeks and can let you know!

I'd hope there would at least something on tap in there! I enjoy a beer(s) on vacation during the day but struggle with a bottle, I can get them from the fridge at home. So would be good to know what the on-tap options are

On the Apex I think they had Heineken on Tap in the Retreat Sun Deck Bar according to the handle.

There were a few bars that had a draft on Tap.  I think it was all Heineken.  The Sports bar on the edge may have some different ones.

Once on board just do a quick tours of the bars or ask a few of the BTs.   They should be blue to tell you.

if none on the ship that appeals to you you can always try what is in the bars in port.

Happy cruising. 🌊 🚱 đŸ‡ș🇾 🌅

DaKahuna

The Retreat Lounge on Silhouette had Heineken on tap but that ran out.  It is a very small device at the bar that holds a small amount of beer.

I have seen taps in Craft Social, Mast Bar, and Craft Social.  However, whether there is draft beer available I cannot say as I normally do not drink beer on cruises.

Thanks. Heineken is perfect if that is indeed the case 🙂 I will be sure to find something to keep me hydrated.

The Heineken draft was back in the Retreat lounge earlier today when we dropped by for a post breakfast coffee.    If you look at the right hand side of the bar, to the right of the bottle cabinet and to the left of the water station you will see a domed shape device.  That is Heineken draft setup.

Craft Social has Heineken and Newcastle Brown draught and Heineken only in their “Bottoms Up” draught system.

Here’s what the Bottoms Up system looks like in Craft Social.

Just be careful...We found out on Silhouette, occasionally the glass will leak from the bottom.  Makes quite a mess!

17 gallons of beer? Pabst Blue Ribbon offers 180 pack for 180th anniversary. Where to buy

Pabst Blue Ribbon is marking its 180th anniversary with another outsized bundle of beer -- a 180 pack. That's nearly 17 gallons of beer.

Looking for one? The Pabst Brewing Co. has made 2,500, which went on sale last week, according to Food and Wine .

Here's what to know.

Where to buy the PBR 180 pack

The 180 pack is on sale nationwide at select liquor stores and supermarkets for $95, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel .

An email to Pabst about Ohio locations selling the 180 pack has not yet been returned.

Kroger and Giant Eagle do not show the product on their websites; emails seeking more information have been sent to their respective spokespersons.

However, the beer finder on the Pabst website shows several retailers near Akron, Canton, Columbus, Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky sell the beer.

Pabst has offered 1,844 and 99 packs of beer in the past

This isn't the first time Pabst has offered a huge pack of beer.

In 2019, the brewery rolled out the " Pabst Blue Ribbon Family Pack ," a 99-can bundle. It was available in 15 states and sold out in less than 24 hours in some locations, according to Food and Wine.

And in 2022, Pabst released an 1,844 pack in honor of the year of the brewery's founding in 1844, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Only 250 were created, and each had a suggested retail price of $849.99, according to Food and Wine.

“This limited 180 pack is a way for us to celebrate a significant milestone in Pabst history—our 180 th  anniversary,” Rachel Keeton, marketing director at Pabst Brewing, told Forbes . “Our fans get really excited about these large promo packs, so we always try to bring something exciting or new to market.”

lazy Sunday afternoon and decide to have an ice cold root beer. Decided try a new place in town that changed ownership recently. The name is Custers and located in a small town called Chetek Wisconsin. The menu is not extensive but adequate. Ordered foot long chili cheese dog basket with root beer. The car hop brought out my order in a plastic basket and the drink in a plastic glass. I was in my car and was expecting a tray that would sit on the driver's window for easy eating, but that did not happen. I asked the young lady for a tray and she did bring it out. I then examined my order and discovered soggy lukewarm fries, foot long hotdog with skin that was so tough it would not be cut by a plastic knife. In the great state of Wisconsin, known for its cheese, this dog had cheese whiz and nothing that resembled chili. It was a brown liquid with chili flavor but no onions, beans or hamburger. What a disappointment! This stand is only summer seasonal and makes it money on repeat business - which I will not be among that crowd. They had a golden opportunity to bring a new venue to town with very little added cost but a world of new place to enjoy. Sorry Custers but it is my last stand if this is how it will be going forward.

GM gives troubled Cruise self-driving car unit $850M amid strategic review

cruise beer review

by Duncan Riley

General Motors Co. announced today that it’s giving its troubled self-driving car unit, Cruise LLC, $850 million in funding while it works out what to do next in terms of its strategy and funding.

Bloomberg reported  that the announcement was made by GM Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson at an investor conference in New York. He explained that GM is reviewing how it will fund the business going forward and will look at sources outside the automaker for cash. Jacobson also said that GM was considering the best way to use the technology developed by Cuise, be it for robotaxis, its current model, or for personally owned vehicles with part or full autonomy.

“I think this is a really important R&D phase, not just for the notion of robotaxi, but ultimately for personal autonomy,” Jacobson told investors. “It’s kind of a pay-as-you-go, but this buys us time to continue to pursue our strategic review.”

Trouble at Cruise, which has developed autonomous vehicles and was successfully trialing a robotic taxi service, started in September when reports emerged that two Cruise vehicles delayed an ambulance in San Francisco on Aug. 14, leading to a patient later dying in hospital.

On Oct. 2, a pedestrian who was hit by a car driven by a human driver was thrown into the path of a Cruise robotaxi. Instead of stopping, the Cruise vehicle dragged the woman 20 feet down the road before coming to a stop.

Following the two incidents, Cruise announced on Nov. 8 that it was recalling all of its 950 driverless vehicles. At the time, Cruise said the accident was the result of its “Collision Detection Subsystem” which “may cause the Cruise AV to attempt to pull over out of traffic instead of remaining stationary when a pullover is not the desired post-collision response.”

As a result, both Cruise Chief Executive Officer Kyle Vogt and Chief Product Officer Dan Kan quit the company later in November. With its C-suite jumping ship and its robotaxis grounded, it was then announced in December that Cruise was laying off 900 employees and nine additional executives.

Cruise recently started resuming testing its vehicles in Phoenix and Dallas again, but with trust in the vehicle’s safety aspects dented, it may be some time until it can assure both the public at large and investors that it’s safely back in the autonomous vehicle game.
