The Jeanie Johnston In Dublin: Tour, History + What To Expect
By Author Norah Deay
Posted on Last updated: January 2, 2024
The Jeanie Johnston is one of the most unique museums in Dublin .
The Jeanie Johnston was a ship built for carrying cargo across the Atlantic Ocean, but during the Irish Famine, it began carrying desperate passengers to America.
It’s described as a Coffin Ship; however, in 16 trans-Atlantic trips, nobody died, and a baby boy was even born on board.
In the guide below, you’ll discover everything from where to grab Jeanie Johnston tickets to what to expect from the tour.
Table of Contents
Some quick need-to-knows about the Jeanie Johnston
Although a visit to the Jeanie Johnston Famine ship is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.
1. Location
The Jeanie Johnston ship of today is a replica Tall Ship, identical in every detail to the original. She retired to the Docklands in Dublin and is now run as a museum on Custom House Quay. It’s a 15-minute walk from the City Centre or 12 minutes on the number 151 bus.
2. Admission
The cost of admission to the Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship and museum is:
- Adults €15.00.
- Senior €13.00.
- Student €13.00.
- Teenager €12.00.
- Child (Age 6-12) €10.00
3. Opening hours
The tours take place daily from 10:00 to 16:00 every half hour.
4. How long it takes
The tour lasts about 50 minutes, and a knowledgeable guide will take you through the stories of the people who had to flee Ireland during the Famine. You will find out about the conditions they had to endure and what awaited them when they finally arrived in America.
5. Part of the Dublin Pass
Exploring Dublin over 1 or 2 days? If you buy a Dublin Pass for €70 you can save from €23.50 to €62.50 on Dublin’s top attractions, like the EPIC Museum, the Guinness Storehouse, 14 Henrietta Street, the Jameson Distillery Bow St. and more (info here ).
Things you’ll see, do and learn on the Jeanie Johnston tour
Those that climb aboard the Jeanie Johnston Famine ship are in for a treat, with a wealth of history to be discovered.
The tours offer an insight into the stories of those who were forced to leave Ireland, many forever, along with the ship itself.
1. Follow in the footsteps of those who fled the Famine
Photo by Mark Hewitt Photography (Shutterstock)
Desperation makes people courageous, and none more so than the Irish escaping the Great Hunger. The Jeanie Johnston tells their story as they left their homeland for a better life in America.
Step below decks to experience what it was like for 250 people crammed into a hold meant for 40 at most. They spent 23½ hours there every day, only emerging for a half hour to get some fresh air.
And this was a boat with a decent captain – thousands of people died on other ships. The lucky passengers were those who only had to endure seasickness, starvation, and storms.
2. Meet the passengers from the past
Photos via Shutterstock
The guides on the Jeanie Johnston tour are knowledgeable and often amusing, despite the sad stories. At least the Jeanie Johnston had one good news story, the birth of a baby boy named Nicholas Johnston Ryan.
The Donovan family from Tralee owned the ship, and most of the passengers were either tenants or former tenants availing of Poor Law legislation that allowed Donovan to pay their passage and claim it back later.
Win-Win for Mr Donovan as he also got the £3 10s for each fare, and the passengers thrived because he didn’t want his business to suffer because of any horror stories.
3. Experience a famine ship firsthand
As they stepped aboard, the immigrants would have been awed by the grandeur of the Jeanie Johnston and its promise of a new life to come.
They wouldn’t have had long to admire their surroundings, though, as getting them packed into their quarters would have been immediate. How long would they have waited, excitement giving way to anxiety before the ship finally pulled anchor?
The seasickness started, and dignity disappeared. Thankfully, they had a doctor and 30 minutes daily to bring their blankets outside and shake them in the fresh air while their quarters were washed out. Nobody died, though.
4. Discover the story behind the original ship
The Jeanie Johnston Famine ship was built in 1847 by a Canadian, John Munn. She was sold later that year to John Donovan & Sons, hardware merchants in Tralee. They had a large timber yard, and this figured in their purchasing decision.
Emigration up to this point had been sporadic, but by 1847 it was obvious that it would continue, so buying the ship was a sound business proposition. They could ship emigrants out and bring timber back.
Most of the passengers were from the Tralee area, so that was probably why they got such good care on the Jeanie Johnston – Donovan was protecting his local business.
Places to visit near the Jeanie Johnston ship
One of the beauties of the Jeanie Johnston is that it’s a short spin away from many of the best places to visit in Dublin .
Below, you’ll find a handful of things to see and do a stone’s throw from the Jeanie Johnston Famine ship (plus places to eat and where to grab a post-adventure pint!).
1. EPIC Museum (2-minute walk)
Photos by The Irish Road Trip
Epic by name and nature, you can spend hours here discovering the stories of our Irish diaspora at the EPIC Museum . Voted Europe’s best tourist attraction in 2019, 2020, and 2021, the museum is entirely interactive. Stamp your EPIC passport, dance a jig or reel, or test your knowledge with the EIPC quiz and loads more.
2. The Famine Memorial (3-minute walk)
Norma Smurfit commissioned The Famine statues in 1997, and it is dedicated to the Irish who were forced to leave Ireland during the Famine. The sculpture’s location on Custom House Quay is fitting as the Perseverance, the first famine ship to leave Ireland, sailed from here on St Patrick’s Day 1846.
3. Trinity College (15-minute walk)
The oldest university in Ireland, Trinity College , was founded by Queen Elizabeth I in 1592. Catholics were admitted in 1793, and it was 1904 before women were allowed to study there. The old library, which includes The Long Room , is the largest in Ireland, and it’s also home to the famous Book of Kells .

Jeannine helped setup our honeymoon to Tahiti (Tahiti; Moorea; Bora Bora). It was absolutely amazing! In fact, it may of been the best vacation I ever had (I've traveled the world). Jeannine made sure each detail with the transport to and around the islands were taken care of. My wife and I just showed up and enjoyed the experience. In addition to all that, Jeannine made sure to find the timeframe we desired while keeping the budget manageable. She even arranged everything in a short time!!! As far as my wife and I are concerned, she is our permanent travel agent (lol). I highly recommend using her!!!!!
When my husband and I learned that we were expecting, I knew we had to get a babymoon to Europe planned but the thought of where to go and what to do was overwhelming. I reached out to Jeannine and she helped us through it. After talking with me, we decided on Germany and Austria, Munich and Salzburg specifically. With our interests in mind, and some imagination on her part, she mocked up an itinerary for us. Since we were flexible on dates there was some back and forth on exact dates and activities. She patiently worked with us to plan an itinerary that we liked and after realizing our trip was longer than initially thought, also worked in a few days in Innsbruck. The trip was great. We had two small hiccups while in country but Jeannine quickly and flawlessly worked it out. It was great to be able to shoot her an email and know she would work it out, we could continue on our trip stress free. You're in good hands with Jeannine.
Jeannine was so worth hiring for our Europe vacation. Jeannine recommended cities to visit, tours to take and hotels to stay. My sister and I were interested in visiting Europe with little expectations. Jeannine asked us about our interests and she used that with her own personal experiences and gave us an amazing vacation. She was spot on all her recommendations. We did have an issue with one hotel stay and Jeannine immediately came to our rescue even though it was an odd hour here in the US. I highly recommend Jeannine and I will definitely use her again on my next vacation.
To be honest after years of my child begging for a Disney experience I gave in, I am not an amusement park person let alone devote an entire vacation for it. I enlisted the services of Jeannine of Classic Family Journeys learning very quickly that it was going to be OK. I say this because on the first conversation she asked so many questions. Quickly after making the decision to make this dream come true for our son we received a packet which included every detail we needed to have a great vacation. I reviewed all of the material and knew I had made a great choice and should never try to do this on my own. We went on our trip, loved our hotel which scored major points with everyone, all of the tips she gave us were so helpful. I felt silly that I had avoided this trip for so long! I read so much about Disney on my own, but advise from personal experience is priceless!
For the second year in a row, Jeannine and Classic Family Journeys planned another dream vacation for my daughter and I! This time we spent the holidays in Scotland. With very little notice, she planned an awesome vacation at a reasonable price. Without a doubt, Jeannine's customer service is second to none. She emailed us on the second day of our trip to ensure all was well with our flight and hotel. During our trip, she also coordinated a tour change for us when the tour was cancelled due to severe weather. Lastly, upon our return to the U.S., Jeannine requested a refund from a hotel that had a few maintenance issues during our stay. Jeannine provided peace of mind before, during and after our trip!
Outstanding service from Classic Family Journeys! Jeannine and her team were my first experience with a travel agency for a mother/daughter trip to London during Christmas 2015. Jeannine's recommendations, the tours, the agenda, the location of our hotel, all were spot on. Our trip to England was absolutely the BEST vacation we have ever been on. We would not change a thing about our trip. Jeannine and I discussed my budget, expectations, wants, concerns, etc and within 2 days, Jeannine had a draft itinerary built for our trip. She included 2-3 price options for hotels, flights, tours, and the website links for each to help me decide. I made additions/changes to the itinerary several times and Jeannine quickly made the adjustments and sent me new price quotes. Her assistance saved me countless of hours online and on the phone planning our trip. During the trip, Jeannine provided in-country emergency contact information of a "sister" travel agency in London, should we have any issues. She also provided travel apps personalized with our travel data (tour times, locations, phone numbers), which were extremely useful on a daily basis during our trip. She was also kind enough to send me an email at the start of our trip to ensure our flight and hotel were satisfactory. The entire process was stress-free for me and I am sure that is what allowed me to relax and enjoy the actual trip. I cannot thank the Classic Family Journeys team enough for making this trip a dream come true for my daughter and I. We have vowed to explore other international cities in the near future and I will certainly give Jeannine a call to help me out.
Jeannine Bottorff helped me plan a last minute trip to Germany. I had not used a travel agent in some time and our schedule was somewhat challenging. With just a little information about our family, Jeannine crafted a fun vacation packed into just a few days over Christmas. Apart from our time in Germany visiting family, we spent four days in Brussels and stayed at the hotel Amigo. The recommendations were almost perfect as were her tips ranging from best way to get passports for kids in a hurry, sightseeing agendas, sites to see...etc., were numerous and very useful. Jeannine is not cheap and neither was our trip. But she did manage to get our trip together in just a couple days and got good airline prices. Altogether we had a great time and I highly recommend Jeannine for the luxury or last minute traveler.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).
Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.
Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).
Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.
Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

I enlisted the services of Jeannine of Classic Family Journeys learning very quickly that it was going to be OK. I say this because on the first conversation she asked so many questions.
