Milan, Venice, and Rome: Your Way

Venice and florence: your way, sorrento, rome and venice: your way, venice and barcelona: your way, venice, florence and rome: your way, more about venice.

Clichés come to be reborn in Venice, where all the picture books in the world won't prepare you for the sight of its gilded palaces rising from the sea. Explore the city's famous churches and museums but set aside time to get lost in The Canaled One. Deceptive, mysterious Venice has a soft spot for wanderers, and to them she will open her heart. There are many ways to explore the city, not the least of which is getting lost in its labyrinth of streets. (Don't be surprised to come to an intersection with signposts for your destination pointing in different directions—there's more than one way to get there.) Don't miss taking a gondola, the most enduring of numerous flat-bottomed craft that were developed to navigate the lagoon's shallow waters. These austerely beautiful and elegantly designed boats have evolved over centuries to meet Venice's unique needs.

One thing Venice has in common with much of Italy: spring and fall are the best times to visit. Summers are hot and crowded. Winters are relatively mild and tourist-free, but there are frequent rainy spells, and at the beginning and end of the season there's the threat of acqua alta, when tides roll in and flood low-lying parts of the city, including Piazza San Marco.

What Mardi Gras is to New Orleans and Carnaval to Rio, Carnevale is to Venice. For the 12 days leading up to quaresima (Lent), the city is given over to feasting and celebration, with more than half a million people attending masquerade balls, historical processions, concerts, plays, street performances, fashion shows, and all other manner of revelry. If you plan to participate, book months in advance.

Top Experiences

Murano Island and Glass Blowing : Murano is renowned for its glass making. Centuries old techniques are still used so observing the artisans is quite unique. Visit the Glass Museum and pick up a one of kind souvenir for yourself.

St. Mark’s Basilica and Doges Palace : The church is on the eastern end of St. Mark’s Square and attached to the Doge’s Palace. The Doge’s Palace was the seat of the Venetian government, doges were the elected officials of Venetian government.

Traverse the Canals : Traveling the canals of Venice may be accomplished in a couple different ways. Rent a traditional gondola which is more expensive but romantic. An alternative is to take the public water bus which travels all the main areas for much less money but is quite scenic and goes to outer islands such as Murano and Burano frequently.

Gallerie dell-Academia : Housing pre-19th century art, the displays in the museum are mostly by Venetian painters and arranged chronologically with themed displays.

Venice for Couples: 18 Fun and Romantic Things to Do

No other city on Earth is as romantic as the City of Canals. There’s much more to it than riding a gondola with your loved one, though. With that in mind, I’ll give you the 18 most romantic things to do in Venice for couples.

couple spending time by the Venetian canal

You and your significant will have the chance to see the city from above, catch an opera at Venice ‘s neoclassical theater, and wander through its picturesque neighborhoods, among so much else.

Table of Contents

Romantic things to do in Venice for couples

1. tour the city in a gondola.

two gondolas pass under the Bridge of Sighs

Gondolas have been the quintessential symbol of Venice for centuries. They were once much more common, but approximately 400 gondolas take loving couples for an unforgettable ride through the Grand Canal and the quieter waterways around it.

For about $85, you and your loved one will get to enjoy a 40-minute tour of Venice, as you marvel at the lavish palazzos between cuddles and snuggles.

For an extra fee, you can also ask your gondolier to sing old Venetian songs in the sweetest serenade you’ll ever hear.

A gondola can accommodate up to five or six passengers. Sharing a ride can make it more affordable. Still, for the full experience — including a passionate kiss under the Bridge of Sighs , you shouldn’t think twice before hiring a private tour.

2. View the city from atop St. Mark’s Bell Tower

view of Piazza San Marco from the top of St. Mark’s bell tower

Lookouts are naturally romantic, or are they? That said, a 500-year-old vantage point in the heart of Venice’s most stunning square is what dreams are made of.

At almost 330 feet, the fourth-tallest bell tower in Italy provides a commanding vista of St. Mark’s Square, the Grand Canal, and Punta della Dogana on the other side.

Still better, you won’t be sweating and panting when you reach the top, as an elevator will be waiting to take you up.

That makes the tower a fantastic spot to pop the question or just to repeat those three little words once again.

3. Learn how to make a Carnival mask

couple wearing Carnival costumes

Now strutting through the streets of Venice with a fancy Carnival costume on is as romantic as it gets. Yet crafting something together — especially a unique item like a Carnival mask — allows for an even deeper connection to arise between a couple.

In Venice, you two can get a lesson with a master artisan to learn how to either make a papier-mâché mask or decorate one (or both).

And if you don’t feel confident enough to match your creation with an elaborate costume, you’ll bring it home as a one-of-a-kind keepsake from your Venetian getaway.

4. Take a cooking class together

man making pasta from scratch

Venetian cuisine is uncomplicated and fresh-tasting, much like that of the rest of Italy . Whether you and your loved one enjoy cooking together, or if you’re simply down to dive into the flavors of local cuisine, then you should by all means book a cooking lesson in Venice .

The best ones will welcome you with a drink and a handful of cicchetti , i.e. traditional Venetian appetizers. You two will learn how to prepare all courses of a meal so you can easily remember Venice when you’re back home.

5. Taste delectable wines from Veneto

bottle of Prosecco and four wine glasses

Veneto, which has Venice as its capital, is one of the most prestigious winemaking regions in Italy . World-renowned designations of origin like Prosecco, Amarone della Valpolicella, Soave, and Bardolino hail from the Venetian surroundings.

So you and your significant other shouldn’t miss the chance to taste those and other marvelous wines from both Veneto and all over Italy.

You can either go on a wine-soaked walk around a selection of cozy Venetian bars or head out to the countryside for a Prosecco-infused afternoon in the rolling hills of Veneto.

6. Go on a Casanova tour of the town

tourists on a guided tour in Venice

Giacomo Casanova had a busy love life, so to speak. Widely referenced in literature, cinema, and TV, the 18th-century Venetian nobleman is one of the city’s most legendary characters.

Retracing his steps isn’t exactly the sweetest of Venice couple activities, yet it is a great option for playful couples who love a good tease.

Besides the notorious womanizer’s raunchier stories, a Casanova tour will tell you fun anecdotes about Venice’s ancient carnival tradition as well.

7. Visit the suggestive Acqua Alta bookstore

woman reading and seated at the stacks of books in Acqua Alta bookstore

Crammed with stacks of books, Libreria Acqua Alta is one of my favorite places in the city. Visiting it is definitely in the top dun date activities in Venice.

Since the bookstore faces a canal, not a sidewalk, and often gets flooded, the owners have come up with an unusual idea to preserve the books: using a few bathtubs, rowboats, and even a gondola as shelves.

Acqua Alta also features a reading corner made up of book stacks, which is an amazing spot for a sweet couple picture.

8. Explore the charming Dorsoduro

empty Dorsoduro waterfront

While the path that connects the train station to St. Mark’s Square through the Rialto Bridge is truly mesmerizing, it’s a very crowded part of Venice as well.

So if you and your loved ones have enough time in Venice to go beyond the main sights, you should venture into the quieter boroughs that surround the historic core, like Dorsoduro.

The area, though filled with quaint boutiques, cafes, and art galleries, gives off far more authentic vibes as it’s not jam-packed with visitors.

After crossing the Accademia Bridge from San Marco, you can turn right and meander through the narrow streets till you reach the lively Campo Santa Margherita.

9. Wander aimlessly and get lost

couple stands at a quiet area in Venice

Walking toward a destination is fun, but have you ever allowed yourself to stroll around without worrying too much about where you’ll end up?

That’s how the best surprises cross our path, particularly in the dazzling, maze-like city that is Venice. And when you’re with your favorite person in the world, it feels even more exciting.

Apart from Dorsoduro, districts like Cannaregio (where the Jewish Quarter is located) and the peaceful Giudecca to the south of downtown are two of the nicest areas to get lost in Venice.

10. Ride a bike around the Lido

couple riding bikes during golden hour

The narrow island that separates the Venetian Lagoon from the Adriatic has historically been a popular summer resort with locals and visitors alike.

Despite not being monumental like the historic core, the Lido is crisscrossed with tree-lined boulevards which make for an inspiring bike ride on a sunny day in the city.

Sant’Erasmo, which is a bit further to the north, is also a good spot for that in case you two prefer a more rural environment.

11. Bask in the sun at Alberoni Beach

man walking along Alberoni Beach in Lido

The Adriatic-facing side of the Lido is made up of a row of beaches, and the majority of them get quite crowded in the summer months.

If the two of you like to enjoy a busy beach, then stick to the ones near the ferry terminal. When you’re looking for seclusion, however, Alberoni Beach is the place to go.

Head to the southern tip of the island and you’ll come across this piece of rugged and unspoiled nature tucked between soft dunes.

A great deal of the beach lacks all kinds of infrastructure, but at one point there’s a waterfront concession where you can rent a jet ski, munch on a snack, or grab a few drinks.

12. Discover the colorful town of Burano

woman walking through colorful alley in Burano

Lucky travelers who are staying in Venice for more than two days should set out to explore the other islands within the Lagoon.

One of the most evocative is Burano, a sort of miniature Venice where colorful waterfront houses are the calling card. Burano’s lace craft is one of the finest on the planet, so there goes another reason to visit the town.

13. Shop for beautiful glass art at Murano

Murano glass items on display

Murano’s glass-blowing tradition dates back 800 years and is famous all over the world. The island, while more similar to a small-scale Venice than Burano, is inviting and lovely in equal measure.

In addition to splurging on home decor, you should also visit the Original Murano Glass Factory & Showroom to watch the process firsthand.

Private tours that include Murano, Burano, and sleepy Torcello are widely available, though you can buy tickets to a hop-on/hop-off ferry too and freely move between the islands.

14. Grab an Aperol Spritz overlooking St. Mark’s Square

bartender making aperol spritz

Venice’s central plaza — the only one officially called a piazza , as all the other squares are just campi — is the no. 1 place to see and be seen in the city.

Home to elegant bars and cafes, this is where you should take your better half to sip on a refreshing Aperol Spritz, the cocktail that best represents Venice and Veneto as a whole.

15. Have dinner on a rooftop

sunset view of the Grand Canal from the Fondaco dei Tedeschi rooftop

A rooftop dinner in Venice is a classic and stylish way of sparking up the love between a couple. Some restaurants, like Terrazza Danieli, are shut during the colder months, but bars like Settimo Cielo remain open year-round.

In case you’re after a more intimate ambiance instead, hit Cantina Do Spade, a six-century-old trattoria where Casanova would eat (or so legend has it).

16. Watch an opera or a concert at La Fenice

inside La Fenice theater

Opened in 1792, Venice’s neoclassical opera house is one of the most prestigious theaters on Earth. Attending a ballet, orchestra, or opera at La Fenice is one of the most romantic things to do in Venice at night for couples.

While the gorgeous interiors are spellbinding enough, live performances at the theater are nothing short of sublime.

And if you want to dive into La Fenice’s rich and troubled history — it was twice destroyed by fire — book a guided tour with your loved one.

17. Dress up to gamble in the casino

closeup of casino chips

Casinos are typically more popular with singles. The one in Venice, however, — probably the oldest on the planet — is a perfect place for a fancy night out.

Although the dress code is no longer strictly enforced, dressing up is always welcome. Picture you and your loved one pretending to be in Casino Royale as you gamble.

You might as well hit the jackpot — yet even if you don’t you’ll surely have a blast together!

18. Stay in a historic hotel

inside the Aman Venice, a luxury hotel located in the Palazzo Papadopoli built in 1560

A stay at a Baroque palazzo in Venice is something many couples can only dream of, but if you can afford the experience you and your S.O. will forever recall it fondly.

Several former noble townhouses across the city were repurposed as luxury hotels. Aman Venice , a sumptuous hotel overlooking the Grand Canal, is one of the finest examples.

So is Ruzzini Palace , which, despite being a tad simpler, boasts ornate interiors and is a stone’s throw from St. Mark’s Square.

couple kissing on Venetian bridge

Each year, thousands of couples land in Venice to discover its unique ambiance, which features narrow streets, Baroque palazzos, and iconic gondolas dawdling along the canals.

If you too want to enjoy all that with your significant other, you’ll hopefully get to draw inspiration from this post to plan an unforgettable trip together.

Let me know in the comments which of these Venice couple activities you can’t wait to experience!

Venice is more temperate than most of the inland cities, and the average annual temperature is 73 degrees Fahrenheit. A high of 83 degrees Fahrenheit is reached during the peak tourist season of July when the city is at its most crowded.

Top 10 Things To Do in Romantic Venice

Whether you’re on a romantic weekend in Venice or a beautiful honeymoon trip to Italy, you’ll want to take advantage of everything this centuries-old city offers. So without further ado, here is our list of the most romantic things to do and see while visiting Venice.

Romantic Gondola Ride through Venice Canals

Gondola rides are romantic for a few reasons, but primarily because you can escape the tourist crowds and relax in the canals of an ancient city.

Gondoliers are known for their singing, providing local insights into the city, and making the entire experience a romantic trip through one of Europe’s most romantic cities.

Gondola rides typically last 30-45 minutes and provides stunning views of Venice’s architecture, bridges, and waterways.

Here are a few tips to make the most of your gondola ride in Venice:

  • Time your ride: The best time to take a gondola ride is early morning or evening when the crowds have thinned out, and the lighting is ideal for photography.
  • Negotiate the price: Gondola rides in Venice can be quite expensive, but you can negotiate with the gondolier to get a better price.
  • Capture the moment: Take pictures and videos of your gondola ride to preserve the memories. You can also ask your gondolier to photograph you and your partner.
  • Put down the camera: I know our last tip was to capture the moment, but putting down your phone and taking in the moment is often times more rewarding and romantic.

Lights at St Mark's Square

Piazza San Marco, also known as St. Mark’s Square, is one of Venice’s most famous and iconic spots. At night, it transforms into a romantic and magical place, attracting many visitors seeking to experience the beauty of Venice under the moonlight.

The stunning architecture of the surrounding buildings, including St. Mark’s Basilica, St. Mark’s Bell Tower , and the Doge’s Palace, is illuminated, creating a breathtaking view. The sound of live music and the gentle hum of people enjoying themselves at the outdoor cafes adds to the romantic atmosphere.

The square is less crowded at night, providing a more intimate and peaceful experience. Couples can take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the beauty of the square and its surroundings, making it a truly romantic destination in Venice.

Seafood Pasta

There are many great places to have a romantic dinner in Venice. Our recommendation is to find a restaurant in a quieter sestieri, like Cannaregio , and enjoy time away from tourist attractions.

Part of the experience is being outside along the water, so the following restaurants have been selected with that in mind.

  • Al Timon: While a little more informal, Al Timon is one of the best restaurants in the city and offers a great selection of seafood, steak, and pasta. Arrive early and get outdoor seating.
  • Ristorante Casa Bonita: Right next to historic Ponte delle Guglie, Casa Bonita has been described as having some of the best seafood in Venice. Grab a table outside and sit next to the beautiful canal.
  • Restaurant Terrazza Danieli: Located in Castello, this restaurant offers superb rooftop views and classic recipes that are amongst the best in the city. Be sure to book months in advance because Terrazza Danieli fills up quickly.
  • Met Restaurant: If you want something more formal, you can’t go wrong with the Michelin Star-winning Met Restaurant in Castello. Although it’s not on the water, the interior design of this restaurant makes this a fantastic romantic experience.

For more information, we wrote a comprehensive guide to the Best Restaurants in Venice as well as a guide to local Venetian cuisine, foods and drinks .

If you want to take the guesswork out of picking a location, I recommend trying a Food and Wine tour . They take you to multiple locations, so you can try some of the best from each restaurant and winery. We took the Dine Around Venice: Authentic Food & Wine Experience with Moonlight Gondola Ride .

Romantic Venice Sunset

One of the best places to see the sunset in Venice is from the Rialto Bridge, one of the city’s most famous landmarks. From the famous bridge, you can enjoy stunning views of the Grand Canal and watch as the sun sets over the city’s most historic buildings and waterways.

Other great spots for sunset views include the Punta della Dogana, a scenic point at the entrance to the Grand Canal, and the Fondamenta Zattere along the southern edge of Dorsoduro.

You can also take a sunset cruise along the canals or lagoon for a unique and romantic experience.

Venice is full of the most romantic things to see wherever you walk. From world-famous historic palaces with breathtaking renaissance architecture to romantic hotels with a guestlist ranging from Princess Diana to Charles Dickens and Ernest Hemingway. The entire city is ripe with romantic spots and spectacular views.

Bridge of Sighs at Sunset

One of Venice’s most famous bridges , the Bridge of Sighs is often considered romantic because of its history and legend.

Ponte dei Sospiri was built in the 17th century to connect the Doge’s Palace with the new prison (and torture chamber), and it’s said that prisoners would pass over it on their way to their cells, taking their last glimpse of Venice through the small windows.

The name “Bridge of Sighs” comes from the idea that the prisoners would sigh as they crossed it, knowing they would never see their city again.

The romantic legend surrounding the bridge is that couples who kiss under it while taking a gondola ride at sunset will be granted eternal love and happiness. While nobody knows for certain where the legend originated, people like started kissing under the bridge due to the beautiful architecture, spectacular views of the water, and surrounding buildings creating a romantic atmosphere.

So take a gondola ride under the Bridge of Sighs, tell your partner about the legend, and enjoy the rest of your romantic ride through the Venetian canals.

Take a Wine Tasting Tour

Wine tours in Venice are a fantastic way to explore the local culture and, of course, drink some great wine. These tours typically take you on a journey through the Veneto region, which is known for its vineyards and wineries.

There are plenty of different companies that sell tours, but you want to look for ones that offer the following:

  • Visiting Lush Vineyards: Wine tours typically take you to the vineyards, where you can see the grapes growing and learn about the wine-making process. You may also have the chance to taste the grapes and learn about the different varieties used to make the wine.
  • Wine Tasting: Obviously, the main highlight of a wine tour is wine tasting. You will have the chance to taste different wines, learn about the different flavors, and understand how to pair wine with food.
  • Local Expertise: Wine tours are typically led by experts who deeply understand the local wine culture. They can provide insider information about the best wineries, the region’s history, and other cultural insights.
  • Scenic Views: The Veneto region is known for its beautiful scenery, including rolling hills, vineyards, and historic architecture. Choose a wine tour that provides the opportunity to take in these views while enjoying some of the best wines in the region.
  • Cultural Experience: Taking a wine tour in Venice is a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture. Look for guides who know about the region’s history, the wine-making process, and local customs.

Whether you’re a wine lover or just looking for a unique cultural experience, a wine tour in Venice is one of the most romantic things you can do while visiting.

During our first trip to Venice, we took a combined Full Day Venice Island Boat Trip With Murano Tour, Burano, Wine Tasting & Monastery . It was a great way to explore the Venetian lagoon without having to worry about the logistics.

Don’t want to take a wine tour? There are tons of osterie (wine bars) in the city that offer a great selection of local wine. Here are two of my favorites:

  • Cantina Do Mori – Considered the oldest osteria in the city, Cantina Do Mori features rows of copper polenta pots hanging overhead in a dimly lit atmosphere. The owners pour wine directly from large demijohns and offer delicious ham and salad sandwiches ( francobolli ).
  • Un Mondo diVino – This converted butcher’s shop offers some of Italy’s finest wines and local Venetian cicchetti (bar snacks), such as insalata di mare (seafood salad) and regional cheeses.

Church of Santa Fosca

The Venetian lagoon is known for having unique and beautiful islands. Depending on your interest, you might want to head to Murano for glass blowing and shopping or Burano for the lace museum and colorful homes.

I recommend heading to Torcello Island for a more intimate experience that is fairly free of tourist attractions.

Torcello Island is just north of Venice and is one of the smaller islands in the lagoon. It is a great destination for tourists looking to escape the crowds and explore a more peaceful side of the region.

Part of Torcello’s charm is its lack of people. As of 2018, only 12 people live on the island – which means they heavily rely on your tourism to support their small economy.

To reach Torcello, visitors can take a water taxi or vaporetto from Venice’s Fondamente Nove stop. The journey takes approximately 40 minutes, but private boats can also take you there.

I recommend strolling around the walking paths to enjoy the lush greenery, quiet canals, and scenic beauty. A few historic buildings, like the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the Church of Santa Fosca, are well worth visiting.

After a relaxing day wandering the colorful island again, dine at the impressive Locanda Cipriani and try some local Venetian dishes (like local seafood) and fine wine there.

While it’s not a completely hidden gem, Torcello is quiet enough that you and your partner can enjoy alone time and talk about the beautiful island.

Teatro La Fenice interior seats

During our Venice honeymoon, one of my favorite parts was taking a romantic walk alongside the Grand Canal to this ancient opera house and watching an orchestral performance.

Due to its rich history and amazing architecture, the Teatro La Fenice is among Venice’s best things to see .

A victim of multiple devastating fires, “La Fenice” which means “the Phoenix” in Italian, has been restored and renovated to its original renaissance architecture. The building is a work of art with ornate decorations, gilded accents, and elegant chandeliers.

Over the years, Teatro La Fenice has hosted many of the world’s greatest opera singers and musicians, including Giuseppe Verdi, Gioachino Rossini, and Arturo Toscanini. It continues to be one of the world’s most prestigious venues for opera, and it regularly stages productions of classic operas and new works by contemporary composers.

If you’re lucky enough to be there during an opera or ballet, you will be hard-pressed to find a more romantic activity than seeing a show and walking Venice at night.

Romantic Boat Ride Venetian Lagoon

How do you make one of the most romantic places in Venice more romantic? A private Venetian water taxi at sunset through the Venetian Lagoon can be a beautiful experience. Ride past important landmarks while the sun paints everything in golden hues.

You have two options, and their price points vary greatly.

First, you can book a romantic gondola ride in Venice until 9:00 PM. The best options are those found in Piazza San Marco, as they will take you past St. Mark’s Basilica, the Bridge of Sighs, the Palazzo Ducale, and other historical structures.

We recommend it if you are pressed for time and want to save money while still having a memorable and intimate experience.

Several private boat tour companies operate in Venice. While they’re fairly pricey, they usually offer customized tours of the Venetian Lagoon. We opted for a tour with a personal guide that offered us more information about St. Mark’s Square, the Rialto Bridge, the Grand Canal, and Santa Maria della Salute .

Our tour started right before sunset, as the light was soft and golden, and let me tell you that the views of Venice from the water are breathtaking. It took us around Venice, past Lido Island , Murano Island , and Burano Island , before returning to St. Mark’s Square. All in all, our tour was right under two hours.

From gondola rides and romantic evening strolls in Piazza San Marco, to touring the Doge’s Palace and having a pleasant night at Teatro La Fenice, in Venice love never gets old. There are plenty of romantic activities and ways to make your stay here remarkably special if you’re on your Venetian honeymoon. All you need to know is that a single moment in this beautiful city can be enough to create long-lasting memories. So why not explore Venice and experience one of the most romantic cities in Italy for yourself? Do you have any tips to make Venice romantic? Let us know in the comments!

Planning a romantic getaway to Venice involves more than just booking a flight. It’s about choosing the right time , finding the perfect hotel, and understanding your travel style to ensure your trip is as magical as you’ve imagined.

Most Romantic Time to Go to Venice

Timing is crucial when planning your romantic trip to Venice. The city is beautiful all year round, but spring and fall are particularly enchanting.

The 21 Most Romantic Things to Do in Venice

Venice is a city brimming with romantic possibilities. Here are 21 of the most romantic things to do in Venice that will make your trip unforgettable.

1 – Take a gondola ride

A gondola ride is perhaps the most iconic and romantic thing to do in Venice. Negotiate the route with your gondolier to take you through the back canals away from the bustling Grand Canal for added romance.

venice tour package for couple

These quieter canals offer a more intimate and romantic setting, allowing you to soak in the city’s charm at a leisurely pace.

Timing your ride for sunset can add an extra layer of romance to the experience. As the sun sets, the city is bathed in a warm, golden light, creating a magical atmosphere that’s perfect for a romantic ride.

While it’s a common misconception that gondoliers serenade their passengers, this isn’t typically the case. However, for those seeking an added touch of romance, you can book a serenaded gondola ride. As you glide through the waterways, a musician on board will fill the air with beautiful Italian melodies, making your gondola ride a truly unforgettable romantic experience.

Before you take a ride on a gondola, make sure to read my full guide on the gondola experience so you know how to get the most out of it.

2 – Guided tour of St Mark’s Basilica at night

St Mark’s Basilica , located in the heart of Piazza San Marco, is a marvel of Byzantine architecture. While it’s a sight to behold any time of day, a guided tour of the basilica at night is a truly enchanting experience.

As the crowds thin and the night descends, the basilica takes on a mystical aura. The golden Byzantine mosaics that adorn the interior are illuminated, casting a warm glow that highlights the intricate details of the artwork. The quiet of the night allows you to appreciate the basilica’s grandeur in a more intimate setting.

For lovers of music and culture, an evening at the opera is a must-do romantic activity in Venice. Teatro La Fenice, one of the most famous and renowned landmarks in the history of Italian theater, is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the city’s rich operatic tradition.

The theater’s opulent interiors, adorned with gold leaf and plush red velvet, set the stage for a night of high drama and emotion. As the lights dim and the orchestra begins to play, you’ll be transported to a world of passion, romance, and tragedy through the powerful performances on stage.

Other handmade items to look out for include delicate Burano lace, fine stationary, and exquisite leather goods. Each of these items carries a piece of Venice’s history and culture, making them not just souvenirs, but treasures that will remind you of your romantic Venetian getaway.

5 – Eat dinner at a canalside restaurant

One of the most romantic things to do in Venice is to enjoy a romantic dinner at a canalside restaurant. As the sun sets and the city lights reflect off the water, these restaurants offer an enchanting setting for a memorable meal.

Venice is renowned for its culinary scene , with a rich array of dishes that showcase the bounty of the Venetian Lagoon and the surrounding regions. From fresh seafood to traditional pasta dishes, the food in Venice is a gastronomic delight.

7 – Watch the sunset from the San Giorgio Maggiore Campanile

8 – Do a mask making class

Venice is world-renowned for its tradition of mask making, a craft that dates back to the city’s famous Carnival. Participating in a mask making class is not only a fun and creative activity, but it also offers a unique insight into this important aspect of Venetian culture.

Many local artisans offer workshops where you can learn the art of mask making. Under their expert guidance, you’ll discover the history and significance of Venetian masks, and then get the chance to create your own. From molding the mask to painting and decorating, you’ll be involved in every step of the process.

Creating a mask together is a wonderfully romantic activity. It’s a chance to express your creativity, work together, and make a unique souvenir of your time in Venice. At the end of the class, you’ll have a beautifully crafted mask to take home, a memento that symbolizes your shared experience and the memories you’ve created in this enchanting city.

9 – Make your own glass jewelry

Venice, and particularly the island of Murano, is famous worldwide for its exquisite glassmaking. Taking a class to make your own glass jewelry is a unique and romantic way to engage with this centuries-old craft.

Several workshops in Venice offer the opportunity to work with skilled artisans to create your own piece of glass jewelry. You’ll learn about the history of Murano glass and the traditional techniques used in its creation. Then, under the guidance of these master craftsmen, you’ll get to melt, mold, and shape colorful glass into a beautiful piece of jewelry.

10 – Take a guided kayak tour of the canals

11 – Explore the smaller islands in the lagoon

Venice is not just one island, but an archipelago of many smaller islands, each with its own unique charm. Exploring these islands is a wonderful way to experience the diversity of the Venetian Lagoon and discover some of the city’s hidden gems.

One such island is Burano, famous for its brightly colored houses and delicate handmade lace. Walking through Burano island feels like stepping into a rainbow, with every house painted a different vibrant color. It’s a delightful place for a leisurely stroll, a quiet lunch, or a bit of shopping for lace souvenirs.

Less crowded than its neighbors, Torcello offers a peaceful retreat with its lush greenery, ancient churches, and quiet canals. It’s a place where you can slow down, enjoy the silence, and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the lagoon.

12 – Take a day trip to the Prosecco Road for wine tastings

Make sure to read my full guide on taking a day trip to the Prosecco Road .

13 – Get lost in the back streets

One of the most romantic things to do in Venice is to simply wander and get lost in the city’s back streets. Away from the main tourist routes, these narrow alleys and quiet squares offer a glimpse into the authentic Venice, a city of hidden courtyards, charming bridges, and local life.

As you meander through these less-traveled paths, you’ll discover unexpected treasures . It might be a quaint café tucked away in a corner, a beautiful piece of street art, or a stunning view of a canal that you have all to yourselves. Each turn brings a new surprise, making your walk an adventure.

Getting lost in Venice’s back streets is about slowing down and savoring the moment. It’s about the joy of discovery, the shared laughter when you realize you’ve walked in a circle, and the quiet conversations as you navigate your way.

14 – Have a photoshoot done at romantic places

Venice, with its stunning architecture and picturesque canals, provides a perfect backdrop for a romantic photoshoot. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply want to capture your love in this beautiful city, a photoshoot is a wonderful way to create lasting memories.

One of the most iconic spots for a photoshoot is the Rialto Bridge. As the most famous bridge in Venice, it offers a classic Venetian backdrop. The view from the bridge, overlooking the Grand Canal, is simply breathtaking.

Punta della Dogana, with its panoramic views of the lagoon, is another fantastic location. The contrast of the historic buildings with the open water creates a unique and romantic setting for your photos.

The Accademia Bridge is another picturesque spot. From here, you can capture stunning shots with the domes of Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute in the background.

15 – Do a sunset Jazz cruise on a catamaran in the Venetian Lagoon

For a truly unique and romantic experience, consider a sunset jazz cruise on a catamaran in the Venetian Lagoon. As the sun sets and the city lights begin to twinkle, you’ll set sail on a musical journey that combines stunning views with the soulful sounds of jazz.

From the comfort of the catamaran, you’ll have a panoramic view of Venice’s skyline, including iconic landmarks like St Mark’s Square and Palazzo Ducale. The changing colors of the sky, reflected in the calm waters of the lagoon, create a magical atmosphere that’s perfect for a romantic evening.

The highlight of the cruise is the live jazz performance. As you glide through the water, talented musicians fill the air with smooth jazz tunes, adding a soundtrack to your Venetian adventure. Whether you’re a jazz lover or simply enjoy good music, this experience is sure to delight.

16 – Take a cooking class to learn how to make traditional Venetian cuisine

Venetian cuisine, with its focus on fresh, local ingredients and simple yet flavorful preparations, is a culinary delight. Taking a cooking class to learn how to make traditional Venetian dishes is a fun and delicious way to immerse yourselves in the local culture.

Many cooking schools in Venice offer classes specifically designed for couples. 17 – Sip a spritz on a rooftop bar

Venice’s rooftop bars offer some of the best views in the city, and there’s no better way to enjoy them than with a Spritz in hand. This refreshing cocktail, made with Prosecco, Aperol, and soda water, is a local favorite and a must-try when in Venice.

One of the most romantic rooftop bars in the city is Terrazza Danieli. Located on top of the luxurious Hotel Danieli, this bar offers a stunning panoramic view of Venice, including the Grand Canal, the Doge’s Palace, and the islands of the lagoon.

18 – Stroll around the Zattere at sunset with a gelato

The Zattere, a long and wide promenade along the southern edge of Venice’s Dorsoduro district, is a perfect place for a romantic stroll. With its stunning views of the Giudecca Canal and the island of Giudecca, it’s a favorite spot among locals and visitors alike.

To make your stroll even sweeter, stop by one of the many gelaterias along the Zattere and treat yourselves to a gelato. This Italian ice cream is a delight for the senses, with its creamy texture and rich flavors.

19 – See the Bridge of Sighs from the inside

The Bridge of Sighs, or Ponte dei Sospiri, is one of Venice’s most famous landmarks. While many visitors admire this ornate bridge from the outside, seeing it from the inside offers a unique perspective and a deeper understanding of its history.

The Bridge of Sighs connects the Doge’s Palace to the old prisons. It’s said that prisoners would sigh at their last view of beautiful Venice through the bridge’s windows before being taken to their cells, hence the name.

To see the Bridge of Sighs from the inside, you’ll need to visit the Doge’s Palace. As part of the palace tour, you’ll walk through the bridge and see the same view that the prisoners once did. It’s a poignant experience that brings to life a different side of Venice’s history.

It’s said that if you kiss under the Bridge of Sighs that you will enjoy eternal love, so after, try to hop on a gondola ride to bring you below it.

Libreria Alta Acqua is filled from floor to ceiling with books, both new and used, in various languages. The books are stacked in gondolas, bathtubs, and barrels to protect them from the high tides that occasionally flood the store, hence the name.

Adding to the bookstore’s charm are its resident cats. These friendly felines roam freely around the store, napping among the books and happily accepting pets from visitors. They add a touch of warmth and whimsy to the already enchanting atmosphere.

Wrapping It Up

In this guide, we’ve explored 21 of the most romantic things to do in Venice, but the truth is, the city’s magic lies not just in its attractions, but in its atmosphere. It’s in the way the city lights reflect off the water at night, the sound of church bells echoing through the narrow streets, and the taste of gelato on a sunny afternoon.

So whether you’re planning a romantic weekend, a honeymoon, or a trip to rekindle the spark, Venice is a destination that promises romance at every turn. It’s a city that invites you to lose yourselves in its beauty, to slow down and savor each moment, and to fall in love all over again, not just with each other, but with Venice itself.

Since it is less crowded at this time, the price of airfares and accommodations are cheaper. It is a perfect time to attend events like Hanukkah, Christmas, and the Feast of Saint Anthony. You can also visit the iconic Piazza San Marco, admire St. Mark’s Basilica, and explore Doge’s Palace.

How to Reach Venice

1. By Air- Air is the best and the most convenient method of transportation from India to Venice. Although there are no direct flights, you can take a connecting flight from major Indian cities like New Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad to Venice Marco Polo Airport. Airlines like Air India, Lufthansa, Finnair, Air Dolomiti, and Swiss Air operate indirect flights on this route. These flights offer layovers in cities like Rome, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Munich, Warsaw, Paris, Zurich, and Vienna. The average flight duration of these indirect flights is 10 to 15 hours, thereby offering a hassle-free journey with our Venice Italy trip packages.

Places to Visit on the Venice Tour

Here are the famous places to visit in Venice :

1. St. Mark's Basilica- St. Mark’s Basilica is a beautiful attraction to see with our India to Venice tour package. Flaunting the Byzantine architecture, you can marvel at shimmering gold mosaics, marble columns, and the dazzling Pala d'Oro altarpiece of this popular attraction. It also lets you take a tour of the terrace for panoramic views of the magnificent Piazza San Marco. As a symbol of the heritage of Venice, St. Mark’s Basilica attracts you to admire its beauty and experience its spiritual ambience.

2. Piazza San Marco- Piazza San Marco , also known as St. Mark’s Square, is another top attraction in Venice. It is the largest open space in the city for centuries. Once a bustling market, it is today surrounded by impressive buildings and the iconic Basilica di San Marco. Napoleon dubbed it as the drawing room of Europe for its beauty. You can see the Basilica, Campanile di San Marco, and numerous museums in the square. Furthermore, you can hear the ringing bells of the clock tower and see the attractive waterline around the square.

3. Rialto Bridge - Also known as The Lover’s Bridge, the Rialto Bridge is a must-see attraction on the itinerary of travel packages to Venice. This ancient bridge was built in the 16th century over the Grand Canal, connecting the districts of San Marco and San Polo. It is filled with bustling shops and stalls that form the lively Rialto market, and you can shop for souvenirs here. During the sunset, you can enjoy the magical scenery of boats and gondolas gliding in the canal.

4. Doge’s Palace- Doge’s Palace is a prime example of Venetian Gothic-style architecture that dates back to the 14th century. Once the residence of the Doge of Venice, it now stands as a symbol of the rich history and political power of the city. The palace has grand chambers, administrative offices, and even prisons that showcase the intricate layers of Venetian governance. Here, you can also see one of the largest rooms in Europe called the Chamber of Great Council, and the Scrigno Room, home to the historic Silver Book.

5. Teatro La Fenice- Teatro La Fenice is a famous opera house in Venice that draws theatre lovers from around the globe. With a rich history dating back to the 19th century, it has premiered operas by legendary composers like Verdi, Bellini, Donizetti, and Rossini. Since the meaning of Teatro La Fenice is ‘The Phoenix’, it has always emerged stronger from fires in 1774, 1836, and 1996. Today, you can experience world-class performances in this historic venue through your Venice travel package.

Things to Do on the Venice Tour

1. Take a Gondola ride- A gondola ride is one of the must-do things in your Venice Italy trip packages as it allows you to witness the unique view of the city. 4. Explore the City's Finest Churches- Another great thing to do on your Venice trip is explore the finest churches of the city. These churches showcase stunning art and architecture, including the exquisite frescoes in Santa Maria dei Miracoli and San Sebastiano. The best way to explore 18 beautiful churches in the city is with the help of a Chorus pass. Through this pass, you can also see the jewel box Miracoli and frescoed Frari. It is a wonderful way to experience the rich cultural heritage of Venice.

5. See Venice’s Birthplace on Torcello- Witnessing the birthplace of Venic on Torcello Island is a must-do thing with our India to Venice tour package.
