virgin classes of travel

Virgin Atlantic Upper Class is one of the most sought after business class products for travel to and from Europe.

Operating primarily out of London-Heathrow and Manchester, Virgin Atlantic covers almost all major US cities, with many more routes to Africa and Asia.

In fact, Virgin Atlantic doesn’t have any short-haul flights within Europe, and primarily flies long-haul, with a couple of short flights in the Caribbean.

In this guide, we’ll explore why Virgin Atlantic Upper Class is so popular. We’ll go over the entire Virgin Atlantic Upper Class experience, from before you board, to what you can expect in the air.

Lastly, we’ll look at all of the available routes, and of course, the best way to book Virgin Atlantic Upper Class with miles and points.

The Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Experience

Virgin Atlantic certainly tries to separate itself from other airlines. The Upper Class experience is a far cry from your traditional business class product.

The vibrant neon lights and the onboard bar provide a more lively atmosphere for your journey than the more classic, business-like cabin found on most other airlines.

Indeed, one of the highlights of the Virgin Atlantic Upper Class experience is the onboard lounge known as “The Loft,” located on most of Virgin Atlantic’s Airbus A350 aircraft.

Additionally, every Upper Class seat is able to transform into a fully lie-flat bed, so you’ll be able to sleep during your international flight.

Ground Experience

If you’re flying out of London-Heathrow, your Virgin Atlantic Upper Class benefits begin as soon as you arrive at the airport.

Virgin Atlantic has a dedicated drop-off area known as the Upper Class Wing. Marketed as “your own private airport,” the Upper Class Wing is an exclusive check-in area for Upper Class and Delta One passengers.

Through the Upper Class Wing, you’ll be able to breeze through security and onward to perhaps one of the highlights of the Upper Class experience: the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse.

The Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse London is perhaps one of the world’s best business class lounges.

Not only does the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse have the usual spread of food and drinks expected of a high-quality lounge, but they go far above and beyond.

One interesting feature is the small fitness centre equipped with peloton bikes to get in a quick workout before your flight.

This outdoor green space provides spectacular views of the tarmac, and is overall a great area to enjoy the unique experience of waiting for boarding while basking in the sun.

London-Heathrow’s Clubhouse is Virgin Atlantic’s flagship lounge, but there are also other Clubhouse lounges available to Upper Class passengers in the following cities:

  • Boston (BOS)
  • Johannesburg (JNB)
  • New York (JFK)
  • San Francisco (SFO)
  • Washington DC (IAD)

If you’re flying Virgin Atlantic Upper Class out of another city, you’ll most likely still have access to one of the many shared lounges. The full list of lounges available to you if you’re flying Virgin Atlantic Upper Class can be found on Virgin Atlantic’s website.

virgin classes of travel

Virgin Atlantic Upper Class seats may differ slightly, depending on what aircraft you’re flying on. Virgin Atlantic operates four different aircraft types, and all of them have an Upper Class cabin.

All Upper Class seats are high quality and can be converted to lie-flat beds. Upper Class seats on the Airbus A350-1000 are arranged in a mix of herringbone and reverse herringbone seats.

The window seats face away from the aisle, while the middle seats face towards the aisle.

On the Airbus A330neo, all seats are forward-facing, with window seats alternating row-by-row, and seats being either right up against the window or closer to the aisle.

Upper Class seats on Virgin Atlantic’s Boeing 787-9 and on the Airbus A330-300 are similar in that the window seats face inwards and the middle-row seats face to the right side of the aircraft.

Virgin Atlantic Upper Class seats are between 20 inches wide on the Airbus A350 and 22 inches wide on the Airbus A330neo, Airbus A330-300, and Boeing 787.

All Virgin Atlantic Upper Class seats are fairly similar, but there are some important distinctions.

The Airbus A330neo is the newest and most updated version of Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class. It’s also the only Upper Class cabin with privacy partitions that fully close around your seat.

The Airbus A350 is equipped with a slidable partition, but it doesn’t provide complete privacy.

Virgin Atlantic Upper Class seats found on the Airbus A330-300s and Boeing 787s have the least amount of privacy, with no sliding doors or partitions.

Not only is the Airbus A330neo the newest Upper Class cabin, but it’s also the exclusive home of the Retreat Suite, located at seats 1D and 1G.

The seats themselves are comparable with all other Upper Class products; however, the leg room and overall space is significantly larger.

Additionally, at the front of the Retreat Suites, there’s an ottoman, which can double as a second seat. With this additional seat and the larger space, you can actually have a guest join you to enjoy a meal.

What’s more, the touchscreen entertainment unit is 27 inches, up from 17.5 inches found in the other Upper Class seats.

The slight upgrades that come with the Retreat Suites, also come with a slightly higher price tag, which we’ll go over a little later.

Food & Drink

Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class dining experience is described as a “restaurant above the clouds,” and during your flight, you’ll be able to choose from multiple options for your four-course onboard meal.

In fact, you can even pre-order your meal on Virgin Atlantic’s website between seven days and 24 hours before your flight.

Meal options can change depending on the season, but options have included North Atlantic cod, roasted Norfolk chicken breast, or a toragashi-marinated halloumi poke bowl.

If you have any dietary requirements, Virgin Atlantic provides alternative options to cover any food preferences or restrictions you may have.

As for drinks, you’ll have a choice of welcome champagne or orange juice upon boarding. While airborne, you’ll have access to a full bar, serving soft drinks, hot drinks, wine, beer, spirits, and tasty cocktails.

Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Cabin

There are a total of four different types of Virgin Atlantic aircraft, and all of them are equipped with an Upper Class cabin.

Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A330-300

Virgin Atlantic operates 17 Boeing 787-9 aircraft, which means this aircraft makes up almost half of Virgin Atlantic’s fleet. In addition, the fleet contains 10 Airbus A330-300s.

Virgin Atlantic’s Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A330-300 aircraft have an almost identical layout. Both have a total of 31 Upper Class seats arranged in a 1-1-1 configuration.

The middle row on both aircraft, row G, and the right window row, row K, share an aisle.

Row A on both aircraft provides the most privacy, as it doesn’t share an aisle with the middle seat.

With that in mind, if you’re a solo traveller wanting maximum privacy, you’ll want to choose any seat in row A (keeping in mind that seat 1A on both aircraft is closer to the galley and toilets, and may have more traffic and noise).

If you are travelling with a companion, then choosing two seats directly across from each other, one in row G and one in row K, will allow you the best chance of enjoying the flight together.

Both the Boeing 787 and the Airbus A330-300 have a bar on board, available exclusively for Upper Class passengers.

On the one hand, the bars on these aircraft pale in comparison to the lounges located in the Upper Class cabins on the other aircraft.

On the other hand, having a bar on board is still a unique feature, and it’s also equipped with extra seating so you can get a break from your Upper Class seat and mingle with other passengers.

Airbus A350-1000

The Airbus A350 has two different Upper Class layouts. The most common arrangement can be found on seven of the nine A350s in Virgin Atlantic’s fleet.

This layout consists of 44 Upper Class seats in a 1-2-1 configuration with a mix of herringbone and reverse herringbone seats.

The window seats face towards the windows, and the middle seats face towards the aisles.

If you are travelling solo, any window seat will provide the most privacy. Seats 1A and 1K are closest to the toilets and galley at the front of the aircraft and this may mean increased aisle traffic.

Seats 11A and 11K are closest to the onboard lounge, which may or may not be a good thing, depending how close you want to be to the lounge and its social atmosphere.

If you’re travelling with a companion, the two middle seats have a sliding partition. This partition can be opened to allow you to enjoy your Upper Class experience with another.

The 44-seat layout on the A350 also has “The Loft,” which is an onboard lounge where you can enjoy drinks and snacks in a space that provides more room than any business class seat.

In fact, the Loft also has a 32-inch TV which you can connect to bluetooth headphones to watch your favourite show on a larger screen.

Virgin Atlantic’s remaining two A350s only have 16 Upper Class seats. These seats are arranged in the same 1-2-1 configuration as the other A350s.

The main difference on these two aircraft is the absence of the Loft. Instead, these Upper Class cabins have what’s called “The Booth.”

The Booth is a significantly smaller lounge than the Loft, and can only be enjoyed by two people at a time.

If you want to spend time in the Booth during your flight, you’ll have to book a spot with the crew as soon as you board.

virgin classes of travel

Airbus A330neo

Lastly, Virgin Atlantic has four Airbus A330neo aircraft in their fleet.

These cabins have 32 Upper Class seats which also have a 1-2-1 configuration. However, the layout is very different from the A350 Upper Class layout.

The main difference is that all seats are completely forward-facing. What’s more, every Upper Class seat has a door that can close all the way for complete privacy.

If you’re travelling solo on the A330neo, and you’re looking to enjoy maximum privacy, one of the following seats is your best choice: 2A, 2K, 4A, 4K, 6A, 6K, 8A, or 8K .

Not only are these window seats, but the seats themselves are right up against the window with your armrest, seat controls, and tray table in-between you and the aisle.

If you’re travelling with a companion, then by far the best seats are the Retreat Suites at 1D and 1G. These special seats allow you to easily lower the partition between the two seats, and you can even share the same table.

That being said, side-by-side middle seats will also allow you to easily converse with your travel partner.

All A330neos have the same Loft lounge that’s found on the Airbus A350s. This lounge is located right behind row 8, in between the Upper Class cabin and the rest of the aircraft.

Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Routes

Virgin Atlantic has an Upper Class cabin on all of their routes, and the airline flies to over 30 locations across five continents.

Most of Virgin Atlantic’s flights operate out of London-Heathrow. However, there is one route that’s operated out of Edinburgh, and four routes operating out of Manchester, as well as a couple of short-haul flights in the Caribbean.

A list of all of Virgin Airlines’ destinations and routes can be found on their website.

How to Redeem Points for Virgin Atlantic Upper Class

After many years of operating without being a member of any airline alliance, Virgin Atlantic has recently joined the SkyTeam Alliance.

This means that there’s more opportunities to use points for Virgin Atlantic Upper Class flights.

One way to book a Virgin Atlantic Upper Class flight is with Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, which has two published zone-based award charts: one for standard season and one for peak season.

During the standard season dates, a one-way ticket in the Upper Class cabin to or from the UK will cost the listed number of Virgin Points to the following destinations:

  • USA – Northeast: 47,500
  • USA – Midwest & South: 47,500
  • USA – West: 67,500
  • Israel: 28,000
  • India and Dubai: 37,500
  • Caribbean: 57,500
  • Nigeria and China: 57,500
  • South Africa, and Indian Ocean: 57,500

During peak season, you can expect the number of points required to go up by around 10,000 Virgin Points per one-way flight.

Additionally, on any of these routes, you can travel with an infant under two, who will be travelling on your lap, for only 5,000 extra points in Upper Class.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points are fairly easy to earn, as Flying Club is a transfer partner of most of the major US banks. In fact, you can transfer to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points at a rate of 1:1 from the following programs:

  • American Express US Membership Rewards
  • Bilt Rewards
  • Capital One Miles
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • Citi ThankYou Rewards

Additionally, there are often transfer bonuses of up to 30% for you to take advantage of, offering the opportunity to snag an Upper Class flight between London and New York for only around 36,600 points when transferring from one of the above programs.

virgin classes of travel

However, it’s important to note that when booking any Virgin Atlantic Upper Class flight departing from the UK, you’ll be subject to the United Kingdom’s Air Passenger Duty (APD), which can certainly add to the cost of your ticket.

For example, a one-way Upper Class flight from London-Heathrow (LHR) to New York (JFK) can be booked for only 47,500 Virgin Atlantic Virgin Points, but you’ll also have to pay £627 in taxes and surcharges.

Despite not having to pay APD when flying into London, the taxes and surcharges for that same route but instead from New York (JFK) to London-Heathrow (LHR) carries similar fees.

A way to book Virgin Atlantic Upper Class without having to pay exorbitant fees is through Delta SkyMiles.

The same Virgin Atlantic Upper Class New York to London one-way flight that we mentioned above will only cost $5.60 (USD) in all taxes and fees when booking through Delta SkyMiles. However, it will cost over five times the number of Delta SkyMiles than it would with Virgin Points.

Indeed, this trip comes out to a whopping 260,000 Delta SkyMiles.

The third, and perhaps best, option is to use Air France KLM Flying Blue miles to book your seat in Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class cabin.

Using this program, the same flight from New York to London costs 75,000 Flying Blue miles and $227.50 (USD) for the taxes and fees.

Flying Blue miles can be earned by transferring from the following loyalty programs at the listed ratios:

  • American Express Membership Rewards : 1:0.75
  • American Express US Membership Rewards: 1:1
  • Capital One Miles: 1:1
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards: 1:1
  • Citi ThankYou Rewards: 1:1
  • Marriott Bonvoy : 60,000:25,000

Redeeming Flying Blue miles for an Upper Class flight is a great option because the points required are significantly lower than Delta SkyMiles, and the taxes and fees are less than half of what you’d pay if you were to redeem Virgin Points.

virgin classes of travel

Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Award Availability

The best way to find Virgin Atlantic Upper Class award availability is by using Virgin Atlantic Flying Club’s reward seat checker.

You can look up any route Virgin Atlantic flies and search month-by-month for award availability.

It’s easiest to find availability in Virgin Atlantic Upper Class by booking using their own Flying Club loyalty program.

If you want to redeem using Delta Skymiles or KLM/Air France Flying Blue miles, you’ll have the most success by booking far in advance.

Tips and Tricks for Virgin Atlantic Upper Class

Even though it may cost more to fly out of London-Heathrow, doing so will grant you access to the Upper Class Wing and the famous Clubhouse lounge.

With the fitness centre and the rooftop garden, it may just be worth the APD fees.

If you have the choice, you’ll want to make sure you book your Upper Class flight on either the A330neo or on one of the seven A350s that have the Loft lounge.

In order to ensure you’re booked in the A350 that has the Loft lounge, you’ll want to check how many Upper Class seats there are.

If the A350 has 44 Upper Class seats, then it’ll be the aircraft with the Loft. If you happen to book one of the A350s that doesn’t have the Loft, you’ll still have access to the smaller lounge, the Booth.

However, make sure to book your time for the Booth right away, as it can only accommodate two passengers at a time.

Lastly, if you’re flying on the A330neo, and you want to experience the extra space that comes with the Retreat Suites, you’ll have to try and pay for an upgrade.

Notably, the Retreat Suites can’t be booked directly – they can only be booked by passengers with a confirmed ticket in Upper Class.

In order to book the Retreat Suites, you’ll have to reserve the seats for an additional £200 each for a one-way flight, and this can only be done 14 days before departure.

Whether or not the extra £200 is worth it depends on how much you value having the extra space and the unique experience.

Virgin Atlantic Upper Class is the complete package from the ground experience to the onboard service.

The world-class Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse in London is especially unique with a fitness centre and a rooftop garden.

On board, you can relax in your fully lie-flat seat, or head over to one of the bars or lounges to enjoy the journey from a different area.

Virgin Atlantic Upper Class can be booked with Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Delta SkyMiles, or Air France KLM Flying Blue.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club requires the fewest number of points, but costs the most in fees and surcharges. Delta SkyMiles is the cheapest for taxes and surcharges, but costs significantly more miles.

Flying Blue miles arguably provides a happy medium, requiring a reasonable amount of miles, and a mid-range cost for fees and surcharges.

The best program to book with will largely depend on how many points or miles you have in each, and how much you’re willing to spend on fees and surcharges for an Upper Class flight.

Understanding the differences between Virgin Atlantic's 3 economy fare types

Ben Smithson

Virgin Atlantic offers three different cabins on its aircraft: economy, premium economy and Upper Class (its version of business class). But did you know its economy cabin offers three very different fare types?

For starters, all three economy fare types include the following, which you would expect from a full-service Virgin Atlantic flight:

  • A seat in the economy cabin of the aircraft;
  • Hand luggage on board;
  • All meals, snacks and drinks;
  • In-flight seat back entertainment; and
  • The ability to earn Flying Club miles for the flight.

The three fare types, called Light, Classic and Delight then differ as follows:

*Passengers flying to or from Delhi, Mumbai, Lagos and Johannesburg have a different baggage allowance.

So why are there three different options for the same cabin? Virgin says it is about giving passengers more choice in how they travel and not paying for things they don't want or need. Don't need checked luggage for a cheeky weekend in NYC? Don't pay for it. Really want seat selection to ensure you sit next to your travel partner? There's that option there, too. Economy Delight comes with loads of perks that airlines usually reserve for their elite status members who are flying economy -- now everyone has the choice to pay for these benefits.

The three options also help Virgin compete with Norwegian on many of the same routes to the United States, which offers very low headline fares similar to the Economy Light option with Virgin. Where you see fantastic sale fares advertised with Virgin Atlantic, it will most likely be Economy Light options. I would argue that an Economy Light fare with Virgin would be better than the same on Norwegian , as Norwegian does not include a cabin bag, food or drinks for free on its cheapest fares, whereas Virgin Atlantic does.

Related: Norwegian Air implements fees for cabin bags, increases checked-luggage allowance

Photo by Jean Arnas/The Points Guy

How much does each option cost?

Looking at a return trip on the busy London to New York route in March I can see fares priced as follows:

  • Economy Light -- $350
  • Economy Classic -- $481
  • Economy Delight -- $573

So for a cheap sale fare, Classic is $130 more than Light, or almost 40% more. Delight is around 20% more than Classic and more than 60% more expensive than Light.

There are two ways to look at this. You could take the position that Light is incredibly cheap for a trans-Atlantic flight on a full-service airline -- Norwegian may be a similar price and also not include seat selection or checked bags but it won't include a cabin bag and food and drinks like Virgin does.

Another way to look at it is that the Classic and Delight fares are significantly more expensive than the Light option, so consider if you need all those extras that are bundled together in Classic and Delight fares if you are trying to decide between the three. If you can get away with hand luggage only for a long weekend and don't want to upgrade your fare with miles, remember that you can pay $40 per person for seat selection if you wish -- even doing that both ways you'll still save money versus the Classic price.

Related: Crowd pleaser: A review of Virgin Atlantic's A350 in economy from London to New York

Bottom line

Virgin Atlantic has split its economy cabin into three different fare options. You only need to pay for what you use and you have the choice between very cheap fares without any bells and whistles through to fares with just about everything you could possibly offer an economy passenger. Always keep in mind that Virgin Atlantic is a full-service airline so you can earn miles as well as enjoy food, drinks and entertainment on all flights.

What to expect flying first class with Virgin Atlantic

When flying Virgin Atlantic first class, also known as upper class, you'll experience luxury every step of the way. Your experience starts with a chauffeured ride to the airport, and then continues with exclusive airport lounges — and that's all before your eventual departure.

Bag allowance. First class passengers may check up to two pieces of baggage per person, and these bags may weigh up to 70 pounds each. Additionally, you may bring two pieces of hand baggage on board, with a combined weight of no more than 35 pounds.

Boarding. As with most airlines, Virgin Atlantic allows first class passengers to board and deplane ahead of other passengers.

Seats. First class seats offer 20 to 22 inches of width, which is the largest available on Virgin Atlantic. The seats lie flat when in bed mode, and offer more than 6 1/2 feet of space to stretch out in.

Onboard social areas. Virgin Atlantic's first class cabins offer exclusive areas for passengers to grab a drink or dine with friends. Older planes have a bar, while the new A350 planes have "the Loft," a relaxing social area.

Lounges. The Upper Class Wing is its exclusive first class lounge for Virgin Atlantic at London Heathrow. Plus, there are seven additional Clubhouse lounges and numerous partner lounges around the world offering drinks, food and wellness spas.

Food and drink service. You'll experience five-star dining at 30,000 feet with Virgin Atlantic, starting with a chilled glass of pre-departure Champagne. There is full-service dining in lounges and varying menus on-board based on your departure time.

Chauffer service to and from airport. Complimentary chauffeur service within 75 miles is available at select airports for first class passengers traveling on paid tickets. Travelers on award tickets may book chauffeur service for additional miles.

Ways to get good value

When booking a Virgin Atlantic first class ticket, follow these tips to maximize your experience and receive exceptional value.

Book Virgin Atlantic upper class with points

Flying first class can be very expensive, so that's why booking Virgin Atlantic upper class with points offers such tremendous value. Be aware that fuel surcharges are levied on some flights with Virgin Atlantic, which can significantly reduce the value of this redemption.

Earn a companion ticket with your spending

When you spend at least $25,000 each year with the Bank of America Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® , you'll receive a companion ticket. This allows you to book a companion for a small fee in the same cabin or class as your cash ticket.

» Learn more: The best airline credit cards right now

Upgrade paid ticket to upper class

If you don't have enough points to book a first class flight, you can use points to upgrade a cash ticket to first class. The cost to upgrade depends on the type of ticket you initially purchased (economy or premium) and where you're flying to and from. For example, from Boston to London, it would cost 71,200 points to upgrade from economy to upper class.

When traveling during peak season, there is an additional cost of 10,000 to 15,000 points each way.

» Learn more: How to get free upgrades on flights

Book an upper class chauffeur

In addition to booking a first class flight, your points can also help you arrive in style when you book a chauffeur for your ride to or from the airport. Call the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club team to book a ride within 75 miles of London Heathrow, Manchester or select U.S. airports for just 17,500 miles each way.

Booking chauffeur service with points is available to all classes of passengers on Virgin Atlantic.

Combine points and cash to book your flight

To save your cash, you can use a combination of points and cash when booking eligible Virgin Atlantic flights. For every 3,000 points you redeem , the price of your flight will be reduced. The value of this redemption can be less than a penny per point, so travelers should look elsewhere for higher values. These flights can only be booked online, so bookings using the mobile app or over the phone are not allowed.

If you fly Virgin America first class

Travelers looking for a luxurious experience should consider booking a first class flight on Virgin Atlantic. They'll enjoy premium service from the moment they step into the chauffeured airport ride until takeoff, then can relax in lie-flat seats and onboard social areas. The airline's credit card not only earns points toward free flights, but it also offers the ability to earn a Companion Ticket and tier points towards elite status .

Flights can be booked with cash or points, but take note of the potentially high fuel surcharges on award flights. One-way flights from the U.S. to London in first class can be found for under 50,000 points, so redemptions are relatively attainable after earning the card's welcome bonus: For a limited time: 60,000 bonus Virgin Points after spending $2,000 or more on purchases within the first 90 days of account opening. .

If airlines have gained a reputation for taking the fun out of travel, Virgin Atlantic has worked hard to be different. The London-based airline brings a fun atmosphere to flying, and it’s obvious when flying their Upper Class product.

From great lounges — particularly at London Heathrow (LHR) and New York City (JFK) — to inflight bars to fun crew members, the Upper Class experience is nice and easy from start to finish.

Virgin Atlantic A350 Upper Suite seat 4K

If you’re looking for a way to cross the Atlantic, flying Upper Class on Virgin Atlantic is a very nice way to go.

Now, let’s be clear from the outset: this isn’t going to be the same over-the-top experience as flying Lufthansa first class  or Singapore Airlines Suites  to Europe, but it’s still a great way to fly.

Every Upper Class seat can flip into a lie-flat bed so you can catch some shuteye, whether you’re on a 7-hour flight from the East Coast or a 10-hour flight from San Francisco.

Additionally, each seat has direct aisle access , so you won’t have to worry about others climbing over you or tripping on someone just to walk around during the flight.

Again, don’t expect the same kind of space at your seat that you’d find when flying Singapore Airlines business class . The seat width isn’t terrible, but the walls on each side of it can feel a bit cramped.

Hot Tip: If you want to turn your seat into a bed, you’ll need to get some help from a crew member as the seat won’t recline until flat — it must be flipped into the bed position.

Finally, most Upper Class seats are positioned so that you are facing someone across the aisle. This leaves very little privacy for those who would prefer to feel like they’re alone when sitting in their business class seat.

As part of Virgin Atlantic’s effort to make flying fun, you will also have access to their inflight bar .

On an overnight flight from New York City (JFK) or Washington Dulles to London, you might not find many people congregating, but there are usually at least a few. If you have a long flight, you can expect more action around the bar (especially if it’s a daytime flight).

Whether you’re hanging around the bar or watching a movie from your seat, you’ll always be able to enjoy a glass of champagne or a cocktail.

As an Upper Class passenger, you’ll also enjoy a multi-course meal that includes an appetizer, main course, dessert, and a cheese course. Throw in some friendly service from the crew, and you have quite the enjoyable flight!

Virgin Atlantic A350 Upper Suite LHR Clubhouse

Beyond the flights, you will also have access to Virgin Atlantic Clubhouses at a number of airports, including the famous Clubhouse at London Heathrow. Additionally, when London Heathrow is your destination, you can grab a shower and a bite to eat at the Revivals Lounge before heading into the city.

Now that you have an idea of what to expect (and why you probably want to book Upper Class soon), let’s talk about the booking process itself.

Virgin Atlantic’s New Upper Class

Virgin Atlantic revamped their Upper Class product. The old product consisted of herringbone seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, whereas this new arrangement consists of modified reverse herringbone seats.

Offered on the A350-1000 , this new version of Upper Class represents a huge upgrade compared to their older Upper Class seats, which have been criticized for their lack of privacy.

Virgin Atlantic A350 Upper Suite seat 4K from the side

The new Upper Class seats are 20 inches wide, 44 inches in pitch, and 82 inches in bed mode, equal to 6’10”. While these seats are quite narrow and on par with United Polaris, there’s a privacy divider that adds additional privacy.

The high-tech, touchscreen, in-flight entertainment screens measure 18.5 inches, so it represents a huge upgrade over the last version, which measured 13 inches. Also, the in flight entertainment system will be Bluetooth compatible, which will allow passengers to also control the screen at the touch of a phone.

All of the seats are facing the windows, so you won’t need to turn your neck to look outside. In addition, Virgin Atlantic is revamping their onboard bar. Instead of having an onboard bar, they will offer an in-flight lounge called The Loft.

Virgin Atlantic A350 Upper Suite cabin

Inside The Loft, you’ll find lounge seating for up to 8 passengers and tables for snacks and drinks. Also, you can enjoy programming from the 32 inch television connected to personal Bluetooth headphones.

Currently, the new Virgin Atlantic Upper Class seat is offered on:

  • New York City (JFK) – London-Heathrow (LHR)
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – London-Heathrow (LHR)

Unlike many airlines, Virgin Atlantic is not part of a major airline alliance, but they have partnered with several other airlines. Let’s take a look at a few ways you can use points and points try Virgin Atlantic Upper Class. Note that taxes, fees, and carrier-imposed surcharges apply to all reward flights. Points shown are for round-trip flights; one-way flights would have the points halved.

As you would expect, you can use Virgin Atlantic’s Flying Club program to book Upper Class award tickets. The process is quite simple; just follow the steps below:

  • Visit Virgin Atlantic’s website
  • Select “Book” from menu options
  • Select “Book A Flight” from the drop-down menu
  • Enter your origin and destination
  • Select “One-Way” or “Return”
  • If you don’t need to travel on specific dates, you can choose to search for dates within 1 week or within 5 weeks
  • Select “Pay with Points”
  • Show “Advanced Options”
  • Select “Upper Class” as the cabin type
  • Click “Find My Flights”
  • Select your flight and click “Next Step”
  • Review the Flight Summary and click “Next Step”
  • If you aren’t logged in to your Flying Club account, you will be prompted to do so now
  • Complete your booking

There are a couple of things to keep in mind when booking with Virgin Atlantic Flying Club.

First, the carrier-imposed surcharges are steep , especially when flying from the United States to the United Kingdom.

Second, the Flying Club award chart has peak season and regular season. Make sure you book awards during the regular season to save a ton of points!

While the redemption rates aren’t always great and the carrier-imposed surcharges can be very high, the advantage to using Virgin Atlantic Flying Club is that you can transfer a number of rewards currencies to book if you need more points:

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards  (almost instantly)
  • American Express Membership Rewards (roughly 2 days)
  • Citi ThankYou Points  (roughly 2 days)
  • Marriott (< 24 hours)

Delta SkyMiles

If you want to keep carrier-imposed surcharges to a minimum, Delta SkyMiles is probably your best bet.

To book Virgin Atlantic Upper Class, follow the steps below:

  • Go to Delta’s  website
  • Log in  to your SkyMiles account
  • Select “Book A Trip”
  • You can also use “Advanced Search” to search by month
  • Select to show the price in “Miles”
  • Make sure the flight is operated by Virgin Atlantic – this will be clearly stated
  • Review your itinerary
  • Enter passenger information, then select your seat and pay the taxes/fees

As Virgin Atlantic operates out of a limited number of airports in the U.S., a connection on Delta might be required . Sometimes, the online search results won’t show Virgin Atlantic flights as an option if a connection is required.

However, if you can find award space on Virgin Atlantic and a separate saver level award for a connecting flight, there is a way to make this work. You can speak with Delta via online chat or over the phone and they can add the connecting flight so you don’t have to book separate awards .

Delta is an American Express transfer partner  at a 1:1 ratio if you need more SkyMiles to complete your booking. Transfers from Membership Rewards generally process almost instantly.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) Mileage Club

ANA Partner Award Chart

Unlike the options above, if you want to book Virgin Atlantic Upper Class with All Nippon Airways (ANA) Mileage Club , you will have to call to complete the booking. Just follow these steps for an easy booking process:

  • Note the flight numbers and times
  • Call ANA’s contact center at 1-800-235-9262
  • Specify that you want to book an award ticket on their partner Virgin Atlantic
  • Provide the flight dates and flight info
  • Complete the booking

Like Virgin Atlantic, you’ll want to be careful when booking with ANA Mileage Club as they will pass on the steep carrier-imposed surcharges . While the mileage cost is much cheaper, ANA requires you to book a round-trip award ticket — which means very expensive taxes and fees.

Like with Delta, you can transfer Amex Membership Rewards to your ANA Mileage Club account to get the necessary miles to book Upper Class.

The difficult part is that Membership Rewards often take 2-3 days to transfer. This is made more difficult by the fact that ANA will not put award tickets on hold.

Other Ways to Book Virgin Atlantic Upper Class

Virgin Atlantic also partners with Singapore Airlines, which allows you to use KrisFlyer miles to book Upper Class. Unfortunately, other airline partners such as Air New Zealand and South African Airways don’t have award charts that are competitive.

Virgin Atlantic Airbus A350

Many of the award booking options for Virgin Atlantic Upper Class flights are going to involve some steep taxes and fees thanks to carrier-imposed surcharges. That being said, there are some interesting ways to book Upper Class so you can get the most bang for your miles.

If you are okay with roughly $1,200 in taxes and fees, you can book Upper Class with ANA Mileage Club for 88,000 miles round-trip between San Francisco and London.

You could also depart from New York City, Washington, D.C., or another city further east — but if you’re going to spend $1,200 on taxes and fees, it might as well be for a 10-hour flight so you can have time to enjoy the inflight bar!

If you only need a one-way award ticket, Delta SkyMiles can book Upper Class for 85,000 miles plus only $5.60. Clearly, this is the cheapest out of pocket option .

Hot Tip: Since Delta uses a region-based award chart, the one-way cost will be 85,000 miles whether you book Upper Class from San Francisco or New York City!

Virgin Atlantic’s own Flying Club program splits the United States into East and West with different redemption rates for each.

The East includes Atlanta, Boston, Miami, New York, Orlando, and Washington, D.C.; a one-way Upper Class booking from here will cost 47,500 miles plus around $500 in taxes and fees.

From the West Coast (San Francisco and Seattle), it will cost 67,500 miles plus the ~$500 in taxes and fees. Regardless of the departure airport, make sure you book during the regular season , since peak season rates require significantly more miles.

You could also connect in London on your way to Johannesburg, South Africa. Again, you’ll see that Delta provides an option without carrier-imposed surcharges: 150,000 SkyMiles plus around $50 for a one-way Upper Class award.

ANA Mileage Club allows you to book Upper Class round-trip for 104,000 miles plus roughly $1,100. Notice that this is actually cheaper than just flying to London !

Hot Tip: ANA also lets you book a stopover, so you could visit London for a week before continuing to South Africa if you wanted.

Virgin Atlantic requires 105,000 miles for a one-way award in Upper Class plus just over $500 for taxes and fees.

Overall, each loyalty program has its positive aspects when booking Upper Class:

  • Delta keeps your cash costs to a minimum
  • ANA requires the fewest miles
  • Virgin Atlantic miles can be earned so easily because of 4 transfer partners

Virgin Points can be transferred from Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, and Citi Thank You Rewards (all at a rate of 1:1), or from Marriott Bonvoy at a transfer rate of 3:1.

Delta and ANA are Amex and Marriott transfer partners.

Flying Virgin Atlantic Upper Class is a great way to travel for a number of reasons, but here are few that really stand out.

The Clubhouse and Revivals Lounge

When you fly Upper Class, make sure you leave time to visit one of their Clubhouse lounges, especially if you are departing or connecting at London Heathrow or New York City (JFK).

From great cocktails and champagne to delicious meals, you’ll actually enjoy waiting for your flight here!

If London is your destination, take advantage of the Revivals Lounge at Heathrow.

You can get a hot shower, breakfast, and coffee or tea to give you a jolt and start the day right. If you so desire, spa treatments are also available, which can be especially nice after a long flight from the West Coast.

Inflight Bar

There are several airlines that provide inflight bars, but you usually only find them on the Airbus A380.

Virgin Atlantic has taken a different approach and installed inflight bars on all of their aircraft, so every Upper Class passenger can mingle, enjoy a drink, and grab a snack.

Keep in mind that the inflight bar will not be offered on the new Upper Class routes. Instead, you’ll be able to enjoy The Loft aboard the new Upper Class.

A Fun Flying Environment

Whether it’s the atmosphere of The Clubhouse lounge or at the inflight bar, Virgin Atlantic strives to make flying fun. The crew members are very often friendly and willing to chat while making sure every passenger has what they need.

While some business class products are great because of their spacious seats or cabin layout, Virgin Atlantic sets itself apart with its approach to flying. While the cabin layout could probably use some improvements and the seats are due for a bit of an upgrade, they are a fine way to travel and not the only reason to try Virgin Atlantic Upper Class.

With several ways to book one of these flights and plenty of ways to earn the necessary points to do so, you will be on your way to an Upper Class experience before you know it!

Virgin Atlantic is one of the most well-known airlines in the UK, and it’s one of my go-to air carriers when I’m flying to Europe. While Virgin Atlantic offers several fare classes, their Premium and Upper-Class cabins are top-tier.

I’ve had the pleasure of flying both, and I walked away with a bit of insider knowledge. It’s not often that I get to fly Premium or Upper Class, but when I do, I make sure to indulge in the experience. So, if you want to know more about the differences between Virgin Atlantic Premium vs Upper Class, check out the content below!

The Bottom Line Up Front

Overall, I will opt for Premium Class over First Class when flying with Virgin Atlantic. In my opinion, it gives me a similar experience for a lesser price.

Of course, flying First Class is always luxurious, but it can get expensive. The only useful perks that are missing from Premium Class are lounge access and expedited security checked-in—which isn’t that important unless it’s a busy travel season.

Main Differences Between Virgin Atlantic Premium vs Upper Class

The main differences between Virgin Atlantic Premium vs Upper Class are:

  • Upper Class customers get two checked bags and Premium passengers only get one.
  • Upper Class allows lounge access, whereas Premium does not.
  • Upper Class passengers get more meal options than Premium Passengers.
  • Upper Class is more expensive than Premium.
  • Upper Class passengers are allowed expedited security check-in, whereas Premium passengers are not.

The Key Features of Virgin Atlantic’s Premium Class

Virgin Atlantic Premium vs Upper Class

Baggage Allowance

Premium Class passengers are entitled to two free checked bags weighing up to 23kg each. You can also bring a carry-on bag and personal items onto the airplane, which is great if you need more suitcases! The extra bags that I get when flying with Virgin Atlantic is such a huge benefit, especially when I’m taking a long vacation.

Another feature that I really enjoy when flying Premium Class is the priority baggage delivery. It saves me so much time, and I don’t have to go through the headache of waiting for my bags to come out at the luggage station.

Seating

The seats in Premium Class are super comfortable. They are large, leather seats with a 38-inch pitch. Also, if you are a premium passenger, you get the option to select your seat when you book your flight. This is a pretty good perk because it guarantees that you can sit where you want or sit next to your travel buddy.

In-flight Entertainment

Well, you don’t have to worry about feeling bored while on your flight. As a Virgin Atlantic customer, you’ll have access to an incredible in-flight entertainment system. It includes a vast variety of TV shows, movies, and games. The entertainment system is located on the seatback screen, which is large and simple to navigate. You can also buy Wi-Fi for a small fee.

Food and Beverage

Food and Beverage

Your ticket includes complimentary food and beverages as a Premium Class customer. However, the selection of menu items depends on the length of the flight. But the good news is, Virgin Atlantic always offers snacks and non-alcoholic beverages on short flights. On long flights, they’ll serve a hot meal.

Not only that, but premium passengers are welcome on board the flight with a glass of bubbly and are offered three main food courses.

The Wander Wall

The Wander Wall

One of the features that I absolutely love about Premium Class is the Wander Wall. It’s a wall full of delicious snacks that passengers can grab whenever they’re hungry. I love that! There aren’t too many airlines offering amenities like this!

Excellent Cabin Experience

I can truly say, Virgin Atlantic’s Premium Class cabin is one of the best I’ve ever experienced. I enjoyed all of the snacks and beverage options, the service was incredible, and the seats were really comfortable. I know that I’m not the only person who feels this way because Virgin Atlantic was given the Skytrax World’s Best Premium Cabin Award in 2019. They are definitely doing something right!

Bypassing the Luggage Line

Bypassing the Luggage Line

One thing that I dislike is standing in line to drop off my checked bags. This is especially true when I’m running late or the airport is crowded. Thankfully, Premium passengers are allowed to skip the line when checking their luggage.  Plus, they get priority boarding onto the plane.

No Lounge Access

As wonderful as Virgin Atlantic’s Premium Class is, they definitely disappoint by not offering lounge access to Premium customers. It’s primarily for Upper-Class customers only. There are other airlines that allow Premium/Business Class customers into their lounges, but not Virgin Atlantic.

Wi-Fi fee

Wi-Fi is not included with a Premium Class ticket, and I feel like it should be. I can understand if the lower class cabins charge for it, but not Premium Class.

The Key Features of Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class

Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class

When traveling Upper Class with Virgin Atlantic, you are entitled to two pieces of checked baggage weighing up to 32kg each. You’re allowed two pieces of hand luggage as well. This is a fantastic perk when taking an extended vacation.

The seating in Upper Class is top-tier. Passengers get an extra-large, leather seat and a fully flat bed. The bed makes it so easy to lay down and sleep well during a long flight. I love being able to stretch out and enjoy my rest while I’m traveling. There’s nothing worse than getting to my destination feeling tired because I haven’t slept.

In-Flight Entertainment

The in-flight entertainment system is impressive. There’s a large selection of movies, TV shows, music, and games to choose from. I never get bored on a Virgin Atlantic flight. The screens are large and easy to use.

Food and Beverages

Food and Beverages

The food and drinks served in Upper Class are excellent. There’s a wide variety of meal options, and the food is always fresh and delicious. You’re welcomed with a glass of bubbly before takeoff, and you’re given complimentary snacks and drinks.

Furthermore, Upper-Class passengers have the choice of four-course meals. When I flew Upper Class with Virgin Atlantic, I was glad to get a glass of bubbly and a nice meal after a long day of traveling.

Expedited Security Check-in

It feels so good to not have to wait in line at security. With an Upper Class ticket, you get to use the Fast Track lane. This is a huge time-saver, especially if you’re flying during a busy season. One of the things that I dislike most about going through the airport is going through security, so this is a nice bonus.

Clubhouse Lounge Access

Clubhouse Lounge Access

When you’re flying Virgin Atlantic Upper Class, you’re allowed access to the Clubhouse Lounge. This is a huge benefit because it’s a relaxing space to wait for your flight. There are plenty of food and drink options, as well as comfortable seating. I’ve spent many hours in the Clubhouse Lounge, and it’s always been a pleasant experience.

Obviously, the cost is the biggest downside to flying Virgin Atlantic Upper Class. It’s not cheap. But if you can afford it, it’s worth it. The benefits are numerous, and the experience is fantastic.

I don’t like that Premium Class charges a Wi-Fi fee, but I most definitely don’t like that Upper Class charges one. I think that it should be included in the price of the ticket. With the money that Upper Class customers pay, they shouldn’t have to spend money on anything extra.

Alternative Airfare Classes

Virgin atlantic economy delight.

Virgin Atlantic Economy Delight

This option is a step below Premium Class, but it’s one of my favorites. Economy Delight customers receive selected seating, a checked bag and hand luggage, and premium check-in. Also, this class includes priority boarding. If you want a good flight experience without the Premium Class prices, this is a great alternative.

British Airways Business Class

British Airways Business Class

Comparable to Virgin Atlantic’s Premium Class is British Airways’ Business Class. In Business Class, you’ll receive an amenity kit, as well as priority boarding. Customers are provided spacious seating and lots of tasty food and drink options. British Airways has an advantage over Virgin Atlantic because they give lounge access to their Business Class customers.

American Airlines First Class

American Airlines First Class

American Airlines offers a nice First Class experience. Passengers are provided access to lounges and are given priority privileges. As a First Class customer, you can go through expedited security and be first to get your checked bags upon arriving at your destination. While on your flight, you’ll get chef-inspired meals, relaxing seats, and an amenity kit.

FAQs About Virgin Atlantic

Question: does virgin atlantic have a partnership with delta.

Answer: Yes, Virgin Atlantic has a partnership with Delta . Since they’re a UK-based airline, partnering with Delta allows them to provide more services to the United States. If you choose to fly with Virgin Atlantic from an area of the United States that’s not in a big city, you’ll probably end up on a Delta-operated flight.

Question: Does Virgin Atlantic have a rewards program?

Answer: Yes, they do! It’s called the Flying Club, and it’s one of my favorite airline rewards systems. Virgin Atlantic points never expire, and you can spend them on numerous perks, like flights, merchandise, and travel upgrades.

Question: Are Virgin Atlantic tickets refundable?

Answer: That depends on the ticket that you have. In most cases, the Economy tickets are not refundable. However, Premium and Upper Class fares have more leniency. You can request a refund with Virgin Atlantic by submitting a form to them.

My Final Thoughts On Virgin Atlantic Premium vs Upper Class

No matter which option you choose between Virgin Atlantic’s Premium vs Upper Class, you’ll have a good experience.

Obviously, First Class is top-of-the-line, and you’ll never be disappointed with that choice. However, if you don’t want to pay First Class prices, you’ll still have a good time in Premium Class—which is the option I normally go for. The service is good, the amenities are great, and I don’t have to spend as much money.

Well, hopefully, this guide answered some of the questions you had about Virgin Atlantic’s top-tier airfare classes. Which one of these options will you choose for your next vacation.

The Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program is one of the most popular frequent-flyer programs in the United Kingdom, where Virgin Atlantic is headquartered.

However, this program is also largely popular among U.S.-based points-and-miles enthusiasts because it’s a transfer partner of many programs, including American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Capital One Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards and Citi ThankYou Rewards, making it easy to rack up Virgin points if you have a credit card from any of these major issuers.

Virgin Atlantic is also a member of SkyTeam alliance, meaning that Flying Club members have many options for redeeming their points for partner flights, some of which offer outstanding value.

One of the most overlooked ways to get incredible value through the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program is to use your points to book Companion Seats. With this feature, members who are already booked on a Virgin Atlantic flight can purchase a ticket on the same flight for a companion with points at a 50% (and sometimes even larger) discount.

Essentially, by purchasing a Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat ticket with points, you’d instantly be doubling the amount of value you’d get if you purchased the award ticket for yourself. Of course, there are some rules that you need to be aware of when booking a Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat. But, for the most part, this offer is exactly as it seems—book a Companion Seat with points at a 50% discounted rate.

Virgin Atlantic

What Is a Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat Voucher?

Broadly, a Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat voucher is a voucher that allows a Virgin Atlantic Flying Club member to bring a companion with them on the same flight. However, there are actually three different kinds of Companion Seat vouchers that are earned in three different ways:

  • Standard Companion Seats: You can purchase these vouchers with Virgin points (at a 50% discounted rate) when a Flying Club member is already booked on that flight and there is award availability on that flight. Taxes, fees and surcharges apply.
  • Gold Renewal Companion Reward: You earn these vouchers each year that you renew your Gold elite status in the Flying Club program. You don’t have to spend any Virgin points to use these vouchers. Taxes, fees and surcharges apply.
  • Credit Card Companion Reward: You earn these vouchers when you spend either 20,000 British pounds sterling (about $25,336) in a cardmember year on the Virgin Atlantic Rewards Credit Card or 10,000 British pounds sterling (about $12,668) in a cardmember year on the Virgin Atlantic Rewards+ Credit Card. You don’t have to spend any Virgin points to use these vouchers. Taxes, fees and surcharges apply.

Once you’ve earned them, all three of these Companion Seat vouchers work in similar ways. However, for the sake of this article, we’re going to focus on Standard Companion Seats and how you can get a ton of value out of your Virgin points by redeeming for them.

As a quick note on Gold Renewal Companion Rewards and Credit Card Companion Rewards, although these Companion Seat vouchers come as a byproduct of your elite status or credit card spending, we still recommend maximizing their value redeeming them for the ticket with the highest cash price available.

Virgin Atlantic Companion Seats

How to Book a Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat

To book a Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat, you need to be a Virgin Atlantic Flying Club member and you need to be booked on a Virgin Atlantic-operated flight. To book a Companion Seat award, the primary member can purchase their ticket with cash or points.

Additionally, there must be award availability on the flight that you’ve booked. So, if you plan on booking a Companion Seat, we recommend doing so immediately after you book your own ticket so that award availability doesn’t fill up.

To search for award availability on Virgin Atlantic flights, we recommend using the Virgin Atlantic Reward Checker tool if you plan on flying to or from the United Kingdom. With this tool, you can select a Virgin Airlines route and view the exact amount of award space in each cabin class for each day of the month.

If your origin or destination isn’t in the United Kingdom, then the best way to search for award space is simply to go to the flight search tool on the home page of the Virgin Atlantic website, click the Advanced search drop-down menu and select Show Price In Points.

Virgin Atlantic

From there, you can search for Virgin Atlantic flights that have award availability. When you find an award flight that you want to book a Companion Seat on, you’ll need to call the Virgin Atlantic U.S. customer service line at 1-800-862-8621. It’s not possible to book Companion Seat awards online. Be sure to tell the customer service agent that you’re trying to book a Standard Companion Seat, as the different versions of companion fares may cause some confusion if you don’t specify what you’re trying to book.

Once again, to book a Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat successfully, you must already be booked on that flight and there must be award availability on that flight. If your request meets these conditions and you have enough Virgin points in your account to purchase the Companion Seat voucher, the customer service agent will confirm your purchase.

How Much Does a Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat Cost?

As previously mentioned, award rates for Companion Seats are at a 50% discount (and sometimes slightly more) compared to regular award rates. Just like with regular award tickets, there are two separate award charts for Standard season pricing and Peak season pricing.

Below are the Virgin Atlantic seasonality charts:

virgin classes of travel

And here’s the Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat Standard season award chart. The rates displayed in the award charts below are for round-trip flights.

Here is the Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat Peak season award chart:

If you compare the Companion Seat award rates in the charts above with the award charts for regular Virgin Atlantic awards, you’ll see that these Companion Seat awards are discounted by 50%, which is an amazing deal.

You can get excellent value out of your Virgin points by redeeming for Companion Seats. For instance, booking a round-trip flight from the U.K. to the U.S. West in Premium class during Standard season for just 27,400 points is an incredible deal.

For instance, using the Virgin Atlantic Reward Checker tool, we found availability in Premium class of round-trip flights between London (LHR) and Las Vegas (LAS) on Jan. 9 and 14.

Virgin Atlantic LHR to LAS

If you booked these flights as Companion Seats with Virgin points, it would cost you a total of 27,400 points (since these dates are during Standard season). Unfortunately, when purchasing a Companion Seat award with Virgin Atlantic, you’ll still have to pay any applicable taxes and fee, which are often quite high.

For instance, on this round-trip itinerary from London to Las Vegas in Premium class, the taxes and fees would be 533 British pounds sterling (about $678).

Companion seats with virgin points london to las vegas

When we searched for Premium flights on these same dates between London and Las Vegas, the best cash rate that we could find was 3,634 British pounds sterling (about $4,590 at the current conversion rate).

booking flight companion seats with virgin points

Thus, by booking this flight as a Companion Seat with Virgin points instead of with cash, you’d be getting a whopping value of nearly 14 cents per point (which factors in the taxes and fees that you have to pay). This is amazing value for the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program and the entire frequent-flyer miles landscape.

With some searching using the methods that we showed you above, you can find many Companion Seat redemptions that offer just as much (if not more) value than the example above.

Can You Upgrade Companion Seat Tickets?

When you book a Companion Seat, you need to travel on the same flight as your companion. If you, as the primary member, wish to upgrade to the next cabin class, you can do so with either cash or points. However, the companion that you’re traveling with can be upgraded using cash only (and not points) and only if there is an empty seat in that cabin.

If you choose to upgrade your companion with cash, you’ll get a discounted rate. If you choose to upgrade yourself, as the primary member, with points, then your companion will need to stay in the lower cabin.

Companion Seat Terms and Conditions

There are a few other rules and restrictions to be aware of when trying to book a Companion Seat award. We’ve listed these below:

  • From the date when the Companion Seat voucher is issued, you have 24 months to take the outbound flight.
  • Companion Seat awards can be changed or canceled for 30 British pounds (about $38) per person.
  • Economy Light tickets are not eligible for Companion Seat awards.
  • Economy Companion Seat awards are available only in Economy Classic. The primary member may purchase an Economy Delight seat, but the companion will be in Economy Classic.
  • You are allowed to bring a child as your companion. However, that companion will be ticketed as an adult, after which a refund of overpayment of taxes must be requested.
  • If you’re a Flying Club Red elite member, you can use a Credit Card Companion Reward only in Economy or Premium classes. Silver and Gold status members can use these vouchers for Economy, Premium and Upper Class.

The Bottom Line

If you’re already a Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program member and you frequently book flights for others, then you should definitely start looking into using the program’s Companion Seat feature. By booking a Companion Seat, you can book a ticket for a friend or family member on the same flight as you for 50% of the regular sum of Virgin points.

Virgin Atlantic is a transfer partner of many transferrable credit card rewards programs, so if you have credit card points with one of these programs, then you may even want to consider transferring some points into the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program just to use this Companion Seat feature. It’s one of the easiest ways to get outstanding value out of your points.

The Boca Raton

Boca Raton, Gold Coast Beaches

Virgin rating

Cloister

Split between Harbourside and Beachside, there are 200 private, tropical acres to explore at the new golden era of the historic Boca Raton resort. Having undergone a massive transformation, this beautifully exclusive hotel is great for adding on to a Miami or Orlando trip, for that beachside relaxation and indulgence. One iconic resort, made up of 5 distinct hotels, the Baca Raton offers a variety of accommodations from beachfront suites to bungalows hidden away in the gardens. From poolside relaxation to thrilling waterfront adventure, there are a host of activities on offer, not least the ‘extraordinaty experiences’ such as private boat trips, sunset dining, or for golf enthusiasts, ‘The Course Is Yours’, which closes off the 18-hole championship course for you to enjoy exclusively, complete with branded apparel and sunset drinks to round off the day. Whilst there is a VIP feel to the resort, it’s great for any ages. The Banyan bunch kids club offers a fantastic activity schedule for the little ones, whilst the splash pad and 5-story water slides offer perfect respite for them on a hot day in the Sunshine state. Whilst they’re entertained, be sure to book in for a treatment at Spa Palerma, a 50,000sq ft secluded oasis offering indulgent experiences such as the Diamond Facial and Gemstone Body Ritual. However you choose to spend your day here, there are plenty of options when it comes to staying fed and hydrated, with 10 restaurants, bars ,and cafes serving up everything from grab and go items to fine dining formality. For a taste of the Mediterranean at Beach Club, Marisol and the lounge were recently unveiled, curated by lifestyle guru Colin Cowie.
