Description

This is a simple but elegant pre-WWII brick building with metal roof prominently sited on this busy street in Toowong. The red brick gable front with TOOWONG FIRE STATION clearly signed in the gable is oriented west, to the street, and is an easily recognised and memorable building seen along Jephson Street.

The brick front section of the building has had its front doors converted to shopfronts and is currently used as a business office. Brick pilasters exist on the corners of the front and framing the front opening. The northern brick side walls contain three double hung windows. The rear of the building is timber chamferboard clad and contains one double hung window.  A lean-to roofed section of the building along the southern side is timber clad.

Statement of significance

Relevant assessment criteria.

This is a place of local heritage significance and meets one or more of the local heritage criteria under the Heritage planning scheme policy of the Brisbane City Plan 2014. It is significant because:

Criterion A

The place is important in demonstrating the evolution or pattern of the city's or local area’s history

as the construction of this fire station illustrates the history of the provision of fire services in early twentieth century Toowong.

Criterion E

The place is important because of its aesthetic significance

as it is a well-known landmark in Toowong which features a notably compact, visually pleasing form composed in brick and corrugated iron.

Fire Department

About the Brisbane Fire Department - NCFA

The Brisbane Fire Department started as a volunteer organization in 1932 and in many ways was the organizational and administrative center around which the City was formed.  Shortly after the City's incorporation in 1961, the Fire Department in 1963 became a professional, career department.

In 2003 the cities of Daly City, Brisbane, and Pacifica collaborated to form the North County Fire Authority (NCFA) through a Joint Powers Authority agreement.  The primary objective for this effort was to provide a cost-effective and efficient delivery of Fire Department emergency and non-emergency services to an area of approximately 60 square miles serving a population of over 185,000 residents.

Under the North County Fire Authority, headed by Fire Chief Ron Myers, fire stations and fire companies are strategically located throughout the three communities, which provide rapid assistance for medical, fire or other hazardous situations.

To learn more, visit  www.northcountyfire.org .

Check out this video from a recent Wildland Awareness Event in Brisbane, CA .

Fire Hazard Severity Zones

You can enter your address to locate your property on a map showing Fire Hazard Severity Zones. For Brisbane, we are located near a moderate or "yellow" zone due the city's close proximity to San Bruno Mountain being in close proximity.

Getting the Most out of Fire Station Visits

' src=

I have a toddler that is obsessed with all things firefighting. She has been for over a year now. It’s serious.  She has made her own fire extinguisher out of craft supplies, she watches combat competition videos on Youtube, she points out every hydrant, standpipe, valve, alarm, sign and fire truck that crosses her path. She maps out evacuation plans in every building we enter.  And most importantly, we visit fire stations to talk to firefighters. Often.

Whether you call them fire stations, houses or halls (we call them stations where I come from), these buildings are EVERYWHERE. There are likely several in your community, and at least one within walking distance of your home. If you have a “Jr. Firefighter” like I do, a visit to your local fire station is inevitable.  Go prepared.

Getting the Most out of Fire Station Visits

Since we’ve now visited several dozen fire stations in multiple cities across North America, I’ve created a list of tips for parents and kids to get the most out of a visit to a fire station, whether it’s your first or twenty first visit.

Getting the Most out of Fire Station Visits

BEFORE YOU GO:

Read books on firefighting to familiarize yourself with the vocabulary of firefighters. Knowing terms like what a fog nozzle and telescoping ladder are make it easier to point out items you see around the station and ask questions about them. We like the DK Books in the non-fiction area of the library like “ Mighty Machines Fire Truck ” and “ A Day in the Life of a Firefighter .”

Make a thank you card for the firefighters. Going under the pretense of thanking the firefighters for their service to your community gives the trip more purpose and teaches your child about the value of civil service.

While fire stations are open 24/7 (for obvious reasons), they generally prefer hosting little visitors during daylight hours.  Call ahead to the station you wish to visit to get a feel for when they would prefer you stop by.

Getting the Most out of Fire Station Visits

THE DAY YOU GO:

Warn your child that if the firefighters get a call before you arrive or while you are there, they will have to leave the station and not be available to visit with you. Be flexible to visit later if you see there are no trucks in the bay.

Wear your favorite firefighting gear. My daughter has several fire truck shirts, a chief hat and various costume pieces she wears when she visits fire stations.

Plan to spend no more than 15 minutes in the station on any one visit. It’s a place of business, so they must stick to a schedule.

Prepare a list of 3 or 4 questions for YOUR CHILD to ask the firefighters so he/she can learn something new on each visit. Your child can also bring one of the library books to look at with the firefighters and ask any questions you have about what you see or read in the book. By having your child communicate directly with the firefighters builds public speaking confidence and a positive relationship with civil servants. My daughter has talked to dozens of firefighters and they have ALWAYS been incredibly awesome with her. The usually squat down to look at her in the eyes and she has gotten very comfortable talking with and learning from them.

Getting the Most out of Fire Station Visits

QUESTIONS TO ASK AT YOUR LOCAL FIRE STATION:

  • I live at XXX address. How long does it take for you to get to my house in the event of an emergency? (They usually have a map on the wall and can point at your house and the station and talk about the route they would take.)
  • If I get hurt at home and need to call 9-1-1, should I specifically ask for fire response? (In some areas, the responders are equally trained and one has a faster response time than the other, so it’s important to request the faster service if seconds count in your emergency.)
  • Does this station have an ambulance?
  • If I got hurt and you needed to take me to a hospital in the ambulance, which hospital would you take me to?
  • May I see the inside of the ambulance so I know what to expect if I ever have to ride in it?
  • If you live in a high rise, you can ask if their truck ladders can reach your floor of the building. If they can’t, you can talk about the best evacuation plans based on the age of your building (different building codes determine where the safest places in the building are. Newer buildings have specially designed stairwells that keep fire out.)
  • If you visit frequently, you can learn the names of the crew members (see my Final Tip below on how to address firefighters by name) so you can have more social follow-up conversations like learning where they went to fire school, what they do for exercise during off hours, etc.
  • Where do you train? Is there public viewing of the training sessions? (some stations have public viewing of hose and ladder practice, but it’s likely on the outskirts of town where there is more space to make a mess.)
  • What are your most common calls – fires, injuries, people getting stuck, etc?
  • What are ways I can stay safe so I don’t need to call 9-1-1?
  • If I DO need to call 9-1-1, what information should I have memorized (address, last name, etc.)

Getting the Most out of Fire Station Visits

QUESTIONS TO ASK AT NEW FIRE STATIONS:

  • May we have a tour of your station? (Some walk you through the kitchen and sleeping quarters, some have museum memorabilia in the lobby, most just show off the trucks and common areas but we’ve found that each station tour is different and unique.)
  • May we see the inside of one of your trucks? (Most will let your child sit in the truck, some will turn on the sirens – either way, be prepared to take pictures)
  • Do any female firefighters work at this station? (It’s good for kids, both girl and boy, to meet females who have worked hard to break into the male-dominated profession.)
  • Does your fire station have a pole? (Ask gently if someone will demonstrate, but be prepared for a “no” since some find it annoying to use the pole).
  • How old is this fire station? Do you have old pictures of the building? (Some have pics of when the trucks were pulled by horses which is cool).
  • Any interesting facts about this particular fire station or crew?
  • Do you have a fire dog/boat/helicopter at this station?
  • What is the newest or coolest piece of equipment you have in this station?
  • Do you give hose demonstrations? (Some firefighters will spray a hose at the truck or let your little one hold the hose… it depends on the location of the station and what the water restrictions are in your area.)

Getting the Most out of Fire Station Visits

Ask if this fire station has any special events coming up. (Some host dinners or open houses for the public.)

Ask if there is anything you can do or bring on future visit to help them? (Some may appreciate snacks, etc.)

Courteously ask if they have any stickers. (Most stations offer stickers, temporary tattoos or hats to little visitors. At one station, my daughter got a cool t-shirt. Say lots of pleases and thank yous.)

As you leave the station, while everything is still fresh on the brain, talk to your child about things they saw that were new or interesting to direct future learning. For instance, at one station, my daughter was allowed to hold a fire hose and spray the parking lot.  Afterwards, she wanted to learn more about the specific nozzle she operated so we went home and looked at Youtube videos demonstrating the nozzle and we even found one video of the factory MAKING the nozzle.

Getting the Most out of Fire Station Visits

Respect that the fire station is a place of business and that while they welcome little visitors, they really can only take about 10 minutes to host you. If the bell rings and they have to take an emergency call, you must get out of the way immediately and let them take off on in the truck. The excitement of the call is usually enough to distract little ones from the fact that the tour got aborted, but mitigate melt-downs by explaining ahead of time that emergency calls take top priority.

Don’t harass your local station. If it were up to my toddler, we’d visit our neighborhood station (only a few blocks from our home) daily. We limit in-person visits to once every two weeks, and just wave at the station as we walk past in between visits. If any of the firefighters are out in the driveway as we walk past, we stop for a quick hello, but not for a full visit inside.

If your child wants to learn the names of the local firefighters, be sure to ask how they wish to be addressed. Office titles are hard to achieve, so should be respected. Address a Lieutenant or Chief as such unless they say otherwise.

Remember that firefighters are there to help you, so if you have any questions or concerns about personal or property safety, ask! They have great information that will reduce your likelihood of actually having an emergency. The goal is to get the info during friendly visits so you don’t ever have to call them in a crisis.

it sounds like your daughter is going to be a fire-fighter at the earliest possible opportunity. Thanks for a lovely post, I enjoyed reading this. 🙂

' src=

I love seeing/hearing about children with a deep desire for a profession. My grandson loves how things are made and will watch/read anything he can find..

' src=

Allison, You have a very intelligent and motivated little girl. If she does not choose firefighting for a career, she will most certainly be a conscientious worker in whatever field she chooses.

Thank you so much for the detailed questions and instructions you gave so that potential small visitors to firestations would be prepared for such visits.

' src=

Fire station visits are always a fun time, and a great learning experience!

' src=

OMGosh, this is awesome! I love that you have a little girl who loves all things firefighting!!!! Love it… Thank you for this guide, its really thorough and comprehensive. Those are amazing pics… I have a great friend who worked really hard, as a woman, to qualify and become a firefighter; maybe someday I will see your daughter do the same thing.

This morning there are some folks from the local fire station bringing a truck to the school we attend for playgroup…..gonna be a great morning!

' src=

My boys had a school trip to the fire station and they just loved it!!! It was an excellent learning experience for them.

' src=

Great tips. I didn’t know fire stations were open to the public but have always known the firefighters to be extremely friendly and helpful during local event days.

' src=

What an awesome learning experience for the kids!!!!!

What a great adventure,my grandson would enjoy this

On the last week of preschool the kids got to visit the station and sit in the Firetruck, the kids were in awe

Fire station visits are always so much fun and the kids learn so much

I love to see children with an interest in a field

Girls can be anything they want

' src=

Day 1 • Tuesday: Depart Brisbane

To start our adventure, enjoy an afternoon welcome reception at a local cafe in Brisbane, right beside the iconic Roma Street Station. Meet your tour leader as well as your fellow travellers while enjoying a beverage and canapes before heading to the platform for our date with the Spirit of the Outback. After checking in and locating your sleeping berth, relax and settle in for our 6.10 pm departure. From the comfort of your air-conditioned, first-class sleeping berth you will enjoy a fascinating journey from Brisbane to Longreach. A chef-prepared dinner is served in the train’s “Tuckerbox” dining car and afterwards you can unwind in the “Shearers Rest” lounge car as evening descends on our northbound train. Overnight: Spirit of the Outback (D)

Day 2 • Wednesday: Longreach

Wake up to a vista of the Central Ranges, while towns like Bluff, Blackwater and Emerald roll by as we enjoy our cooked breakfast. Soak up the ever-changing landscape as we head further into the heart of the Queensland outback, passing sleepy Central Queensland towns like Alpha, Jericho and Barcaldine in the afternoon, leading to our destination of Longreach at 7.15 pm. Named after the “long reach” of the Thomson River, the town had only been gazetted for five years when the railway arrived in 1892. Longreach is situated right on the Tropic of Capricorn and has a population of just over 3,000, boosted by travellers who come to see the great museums, notably the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and the Qantas Founders Museum. After our early evening arrival, we take the short walk (or taxi) across the road to our accommodation which is also the location for tonight’s dinner. Overnight: Longreach Motor Inn, Longreach (B,L,D)

Day 3 • Thursday: Longreach – Winton

After breakfast, we take the short stroll to the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, Australia’s premier outback heritage institution where you can explore the museum showcasing an eclectic mix of objects – touchscreens, open displays, photographs, artworks and audio-visual presentations. A fun filled live show follows before we head across the road to the Qantas Founders Museum for lunch. The Qantas Founders Museum tells the story of the four key figures who founded Qantas and highlights what life was like in Queensland in the 1920s. The history of our iconic airline unfolds as you experience a 1½-hour Jet Tour, a behind-the-scenes look at both a 747, 707 and more. In the afternoon, we board our private coach from Red Dirt Tours to take us the 180 kilometres to Winton and check into our heritage hotel in the heart of town. This evening you will enjoy dinner in the hotel’s authentic retro dining room. Overnight: North Gregory Hotel, Winton (B,L,D)

Day 4 • Friday: Winton

This morning after breakfast at the hotel we begin the exploration of Australia’s rich Dinosaur legacy. Viki from Red Dirt Tours is on hand once again to take us on a guided tour of the wild country to the west of Winton, leading us across the outback to the exceptional Lark Quarry National Monument. It was here that the world’s best preserved fossil, and proof of a Dinosaur stampede was discovered by the local station manager in the 1960’s. Your time here includes a guided tour and a film. Back in Winton, lunch at leisure before our driver, Vicki will pick you up for the drive out to visit the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum. Here you’ll have plenty of time to wander the displays and our guide will show us around and host the walk-through Dino Canyon. To cap off the day we enjoy an early dinner at Age of Dinosaurs and visit the new Observatory which has only just opened and is a great addition to the Outback story. Overnight: North Gregory Hotel Winton (B,D)

Day 5 • Saturday: Winton – Mount Isa

The morning is yours to continue exploring the town and its attractions or to just relax until it’s time to depart. You could explore the Waltzing Matilda Centre, the first museum in the world dedicated to a song. Our coach will then travel the journey across the wide, rugged outback, passing through Kynuna and Cloncurry to Mount Isa. After checking in to our hotel we don’t have far to travel to enjoy dinner—the private dining room in the hotel’s restaurant is the best place to go! Overnight: Ibis Verona, Mount Isa (B, D)

Day 6 • Sunday: Mount Isa

With a full day to explore, we start with a compact town tour travelling past the vast mine complex to the lookout and the historic Underground Hospital. In the afternoon, visit the lsa Experience and Riversleigh Fossil Centre. This is a multi-media gallery presenting the prehistoric, indigenous, cultural and mining heritage of the Mount lsa region. The gallery displays a mixture of artefacts, photographs, specimens and models as well as audio and video accounts of Mount lsa’s fascinating history. You then have some free time before we gather again in the afternoon and head out of town to visit Lake Moondarra for sunset drinks and canapes. Overnight: Ibis Verona, Mount Isa (B)

Day 7 • Monday: Mount Isa – Normanton – Karumba

This morning we board our flight from Mount lsa to Normanton via Doomadgee and Mornington island, hopping from one settlement to the other and flying low enough to enjoy the spectacular views of the Gulf. On arrival in Normanton, we will transfer to the train station for a 40-minute trip on the RM60 (subject to service running), the Normanton Station’s 78-year-old vintage rail motor. One of the highlights is watching the driver start the motor with a crank handle! After exploring Normanton and lunch at the local pub, we will transfer to Karumba and settle into our accommodation for the next two nights. Overnight: Ash’s Holiday Units Karumba, (B,L,D)

Day 8 • Tuesday: Karumba

This morning after a hearty breakfast, our friends at Karumba host a bird watching boat tour along the river and estuaries including a history of the town from the aspect of the river as the gateway to the Gulf. The rest of the morning is at leisure for you to enjoy the town and take a break from the busy schedule to just relax. You also have the option to visit the Barramundi discovery centre which your tour leader can facilitate. We then gather in the late afternoon to join the Luxury Sand Island Sunset Dinner Cruise. Our little boat takes off from Karumba out into the Gulf waters. Watch the sky and sea turn to fire while relaxing on Sun Island (tide and weather permitting), an intriguing and completely flat sand cay. We enjoy a light dinner of banana prawns, a specialty fish dish, tropical fruit platters and ice-cold drinks. The rest of the evening is yours to enjoy and the popular Sunset Tavern always on hand for a welcome night cap. Overnight: Ash’s Holiday Units, Karumba (B,D)

Day 9 • Wednesday: Karumba – Normanton – Croydon – Cobbold Gorge

After breakfast we roll back across the flood plains and grasslands to Normanton and board the legendary Gulflander. Also known as the Tin Hare, the old rail motor has traversed the line between Normanton and Croydon every Wednesday for over a century on a unique line known as, “the line from nowhere to nowhere”. Our driver and guard keep the commentary rolling and the whole experience is a slice of authentic Australian bush travel, complete with the odd stop to drop off mail or allow wandering livestock and native animals to cross our path. We arrive in time for lunch at the Club Hotel in Croydon and then our coach takes us to the remote out-station of Cobbold Gorge Resort, arriving just after sunset where dinner is hosted on the deck of the restaurant. You are then free to have a nightcap at the bar or wander back to your cabin, marvel at the stars and enjoy the peace and quiet of this wild Savannah location. Overnight: Cobbold Gorge Resort, Cobbold Gorge (B,L,D)

Day 10 • Thursday: Cobbold Gorge

After a hearty bush breakfast, we will join a morning tour and cruise of Cobbold Gorge. Custom-made electric boats glide through the water below the spectacularly sculptured gorge walls in an almost eerie silence, ensuring minimal disturbance to wildlife. There’s every chance of seeing one of the resident freshwater crocodiles! The gentle bush walk takes you up to the edge of the gorge and then a smart glass bottomed bridge takes you across it revealing even more aspects of this ethereal place. After lunch we will board our all-terrain vehicle for a tour of Robin Hood Station (supposedly named because it adjoined the Sherwood mining lease), a 1284-square-kilometre cattle grazing property run by third-generation cattleman, Simon Terry and his wife Gaye. On your station tour you will visit the cattle yards, dams and outbuildings, hearing rare insights into the cattle grazing industry and relaxing over a traditional outback ‘smoko’. You can also take a helicopter joy flight (optional) to see this spectacular country from the air. Overnight: Cobbold Gorge Resort, Cobbold Gorge (B,L,D)

Day 11 • Friday: Forsayth – Mount Surprise

Staff from Cobbold Gorge Tours will transfer us to Forsayth where we board the Savannahlander for the first stage of its 500-kilometre journey to Cairns. Departing Forsayth Station, the terminus of the Chillagoe Railway and Mining Company line built in 1910, the train traverses the Newcastle Range and later, pauses for lunch at the iconic Einasleigh Pub right beside the vast Copperfield Gorge. In the mid-afternoon, the train pulls into Mount Surprise where we will transfer to Undara for an Archway Explorer Tour. The Lava Tubes are giant volcanic caverns—the oldest in Australia and the longest on Earth. At sunset, head back to Mount Surprise, and after a hearty roast dinner wander over to the character-filled pub or settle in for some entertainment around the campfire at the village. Overnight: Mt Surprise Village, Mount Surprise (B,L,D)

Day 12 • Saturday: Mount Surprise – Cairns

The second leg of the Savannahlander journey to Cairns has us boarding early at Mount Surprise. The journey is full of rugged Outback scenery, and we’ll make a few stops: lunch at the Railway Hotel, Almaden; Dimbulah for afternoon tea; Barron Falls and the grand Barron Gorge; and finally, Cairns in the evening. We will stay at the centrally located Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort and dinner this evening is at leisure. Overnight: Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort, Cairns (B,L)

Day 13 • Sunday: Cairns – Port Douglas – Mossman Gorge – Kuranda – Cairns

This morning we head north, by air-conditioned coach to Mossman Gorge with a morning tea stop in Port Douglas along the way. We then travel to the Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre for a light lunch followed by a walk through the beautiful tropical rainforest in Mossman Gorge itself. We will return to Cairns and travel on to Kuranda, “The Village in the Rainforest”. The Skyrail Gondola is a special experience that takes us down to the coastal plain, flying over the canopy of the rainforest and marvelling at the wonderful views across the ranges and out over the Coral Sea. This evening is at leisure to explore the Cairns Esplanade, just around the corner from our hotel. Overnight: Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort, Cairns (B,L)

Day 14 • Monday: Cairns – Atherton – Kuranda – Cairns

After breakfast at the hotel, we depart for a tour of the region of the rich Atherton Tablelands. We start by travelling south across the Sugar Cane fields then up the steep Gillies Highway to the lush forests and farming country of the tablelands. First stop is the excellent Mining Museum and then we take the short run to meet the team at the Herberton Historic Railway Museum. Here we learn about the restoration work and history of the railways of the tablelands before sampling it ourselves with a run along the old line to the astounding Historic Village. You have time to explore the vast collection and witness a variety of big machines in action. We return via Mareeba and the mountain road back to Cairns. We should arrive with plenty of time to freshen up and rest before enjoying a delicious three-course farewell dinner at the scrumptious Raw Prawn on the colourful Cairns esplanade. Overnight: Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort, Cairns (B,L,D)

Day 15 • Tuesday: Tour End (B)

Breakfast is at your leisure in the hotel and then you are free to continue on your way to other awaiting adventures. Tour terminates. All out, all change. Please mind the gap!

Latest Information for U.S. Citizens

Information for U.S. Citizens in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza

The Department reminds U.S. citizens of the continued need for caution and increased personal security awareness as security incidents often take place without warning. The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events. Please see the latest Israel Security Alert .

U.S. citizens should heed the  Travel Advisory  for Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. The U.S. Embassy continues to closely monitor the dynamic security situation in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. There are active military operations and active rocket and mortar fire in Gaza and the Gaza periphery.  Terrorist groups, lone-actor terrorists and other violent extremists continue plotting possible attacks in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. Terrorists and violent extremists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and local government facilities. Violence can occur in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza without warning. If you require emergency assistance while in Israel, the West Bank or Gaza, contact the  U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem  by email ( [email protected] for those in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza or [email protected] for those in Israel outside of Jerusaleml).

Individuals seeking to depart Gaza: As of May 7, the Israel Defense Forces control the Gaza side of the Rafah Crossing. Since that day, the Rafah Crossing between Egypt and Gaza has remained closed. As soon as the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem receives information regarding new exit procedures from Gaza to Egypt, including when crossings resume, we will communicate this to the public immediately.

This remains a complex situation with serious implications for the safety and security of U.S. citizens. U.S. citizens in Gaza in need of assistance should contact [email protected] . U.S. citizens in Gaza are reminded that the U.S. government is unable to provide routine or emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Gaza as U.S. government employees are prohibited from traveling there.

The U.S. government does not control who is permitted to depart Gaza or enter Egypt. Individuals must assess their own safety and risks in attempting to cross the border. Individuals permitted to enter Egypt will likely receive a 72-hour Egyptian visa; all those who cross should have a plan for onward travel from Egypt in this timeframe. U.S. citizens, LPRs and their immediate family members who successfully enter Egypt and require further consular assistance should contact the  U.S. Embassy in Cairo  via the  U.S. Citizens Services Navigator .  Individuals may apply for a U.S. visa at any U.S. Embassy or Consulate; U.S. immigration laws and regulations will apply.

We continue to work in partnership with Egypt and Israel towards safe passage for U.S. citizens, LPRs, and their immediate family members.

Immediate family members of U.S. citizens include:

  • unmarried children under the age of 21, and
  • parents of U.S. citizens.

If the U.S. citizen is under 21, immediate family will also include any siblings who are also unmarried and under 21.

Immediate family members of LPRs include:

  • unmarried children under 21 years of age.

Local News | CSUF communications students getting a front-row seat at Paris Olympics

Hands-on broadcast, print reporting.

fire station tours brisbane

From print stories and news packages to social media posts and daily blogs, these broadcast journalism students will be getting a front-row seat to what it’s like to cover the world’s biggest sporting event.

The group will be led by CSUF Department of Communications assistant professor Gayle Jansen Brisbane. A former sports broadcaster, Brisbane brings 20 years of experience in television news, including 16 years at KSAZ-TV Fox 10 in Phoenix. She will be joined on the trip by visiting professor Bob Young, a journalism faculty associate at Arizona State University and former sports writer for the Arizona Republic.

Students on the 22-day trip will complete two courses, one in sports broadcast journalism and one in sports reporting, which will expose them to both the video/news side and print side of sports media coverage. For many of the students, the classes will be applied toward earning CSUF’s Sports Media Certificate. A new offering within the Department of Communications, the certificate will provide hands-on opportunities for Titan students who are interested in a career in sports media.

“In sports right now, with the addition and the technology of live streaming, it is opening doors, and there are so many more options out there,” Brisbane said. “The fact that we have now this specialized Sports Media Certificate, I think increases our ability to help our students realize their dreams.”

The 26 students were selected by Brisbane from a group of applicants and will work in teams to develop a content calendar with story ideas that cover a range of Olympic topics, including Orange County athletes and coaches, the fan experience and local Parisian culture. While they will likely not have full media access to practices or games, many will be conducting research and interviews prior to heading to Paris and will add some local footage and flair once arriving in France. In addition to posting daily social media content and blogs, the students will pitch their print stories and news packages to local SoCal media outlets for publication.

One of the attendees is third-year Titan student Lina Naranjo. A member of Titan TV and set to graduate in spring 2025, Naranjo is majoring in communications with an emphasis in broadcast journalism and is working toward a career as an entertainment reporter.

Naranjo has already completed an interview with American rower Kara Kohler and is developing some cultural entertainment story topics. Additionally, she is part of the student team that handles CSUF’s social media and podcast content and is looking forward to capturing Olympic moments through those channels as well.

“I think it will be a good opportunity for me to meet new people, see different cultures, expand on my communication skills and get out of my comfort zone a little bit,” Naranjo said. “I’m really looking forward to making as many connections as I can. … I want to improve on my editing skills too, my time management skills … and just become more independent.”

Fifth year student Robbie Loya is finishing his degree in communications with an emphasis in journalism and was asked by Brisbane to serve as one of the student executive producers for the study-abroad program. He will help oversee all of the written stories and video work produced by the student team.

Thanks to CSUF, Loya already has an extensive resume of sports broadcasting experience that he will be bringing to Paris. As a play-by-play broadcaster for CSUF and UC Irvine, he has reported more than 100 Division 1 games on ESPN+. He also recently secured a broadcasting position with the Lake Elsinore Storm, the Single-A minor league affiliate for the San Diego Padres. Despite his full schedule, he knew this was an opportunity he could not pass up.

“I think it shows what Cal State Fullerton is all about and that their goal is to give us opportunity,” Loya said. “The saying goes, what does it mean to be a Titan? And for us, it’s to achieve the unachievable … and I think our students have certainly done that with this huge opportunity.”

Brisbane will be pushing her students to produce high-quality content, and she is hopeful that study-abroad trips like this, along with the Sports Media Certificate, Titan TV and the Titan Sports Network partnership with the Big West Conference and ESPN+ will make CSUF a premier destination for those pursuing a career in sports journalism.

“I think that doing any kind of study abroad is just such an amazing, life-changing cultural experience for students,” Brisbane said. “I hope that it unlocks their drive and their curiosity for the sports media industry and really provides some inspiration for them to just really go for it.”
