Next, we’ll board the Pink Line train at the historically-restored Quincy L Stop (1897) and make our way to Pilsen — a vibrant Chicago neighborhood just southwest of the Loop, originally settled by Czech immigrants.

Visit the Chicago Neighborhood of Pilsen

Downtown Chicago is known for its business, shopping, and extraordinary architecture. But downtown holds little in the way of truly individualistic expression and a sense of community. For that, you may have to think outside the Loop and the Mag Mile. For that, you can travel a short ways southwest, to the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. What I love about Pilsen is that it seems that everything is viewed as having artistic potential– a deserted building, a wall, some church ruins, even some wood shards.

The Pilsen neighborhood was heavily industrial through the 20th century; the Bohemians who were displaced by the 1871 Chicago fire that moved to the Pilsen Chicago neighborhood found work at the Schoenhofen Brewery , the lumber yards along the river, Chicago Stove Works Foundry, and the McCormick Reaper Works. But communities need more than just work. That’s where Thalia Hall comes in.

Commissioned by Bohemian immigrant and Pilsen resident John Dusek, the architecture firm Faber & Pagels designed Thalia Hall, in the Richardsonian Romanesque Revival Style, as seen in its Romanesque arches, rusticated stone, and cylindrical tower.

Built in 1892, various social and political groups formed and met in Thalia Hall, which also hosted various musical and theatrical productions. In fact, Thalia is a Greek muse of comedy.

Painting has been a way to tell stories and pass on information since the paleolithic era. Mural art traditions came with the many Mexicans that started moving into Pilsen in the 1950s and 1960s. They came in part due to the UIC expansion and its subsequent displacement of ethnic communities. These Mexican artists decorated the neighborhood with colorful murals and mosaics. While Latino transition into this Bohemian community was pretty smooth, perhaps due to religious similarities, their immigration and lives as minorities have not been trouble-free, and some of these murals depict their struggles. Some murals show stories of deportation and other hardships, some depict Latino history. While the owners of buildings generally have rights over their own walls, artists can get a permit from the city to paint along the 16th street tracks.

Walking along 16th street, one can see one story after another, one mural after another.

On my walk around the Pilsen neighborhood, I really experienced artistic satisfaction on all sensory levels. Music floated from a shop window. All that was missing was a willing rumba partner. Further along, I stopped at Josefina’s Bakery for some flan. This was just for research purposes, of course, and it was excellent.

One of my favorite executions of preservation stands at the corner of 19th street and Peoria in Pilsen. Fir and storms have repeatedly damaged the First Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church since its building in 1880. Instead of destroying the remains, John Podmajersky, the neighborhood developer, decided to preserve the tower. A beautiful, creative, and albeit eerie at nighttime skeleton of a church today envelops a private garden.

Artists can apply for a mural permit or display their work in the myriad of galleries along Halsted St. Art enthusiasts waltz through these galleries at the 2nd Fridays Gallery Art Walk. Like many in the Pilsen neighborhood, the enthusiasts are likely pondering their own unique means of expression…

I have an MA in Public History from Loyola University Chicago, and I have worked as a museum educator and kindergarten teacher. My desire to learn new things fuels my passion for educating others, which I get to experience every day as a Chicago tour guide. I live in the northern neighborhood of Rogers Park.

How to Explore Public Art in Chicago's Pilsen Neighborhood

In this neighborhood on the city's Lower West Side, Mexican American culture shines through art, history and food.

The aroma of meat and maize wafts over 18th street in Pilsen. Bright murals splashed across buildings tell the story of the neighborhood's Mexican American heritage. On Chicago's Lower West Side, Pilsen thrums with an eclectic mix of art galleries, bodegas, resale shops, family-owned restaurants and—more recently—hipster breweries and upscale eateries.

Luis Tubens, wearing a jaunty hat and gesturing enthusiastically, is taking a group of visitors on a mural tour. A local resident, poet and former arts educator, Tubens is also cofounder of Pilsen Public Art Tours . He highlights several of the neighborhood's 200 murals, pointing out oft-missed details. One mural covers a three-story house like wrapping paper; a giant arm reaches toward a painted red sky. While many of the murals are commissioned by businesses, Tubens says, this artist, Hector Duarte, lives and works in the building. The house's pitched roof and narrow footprint reveals the architectural preferences of the working-class Eastern European immigrants who settled Pilsen in the 1870s.

History and energy are alive here, and it's seen everywhere, in the chatty street vendors and the man chopping meat at Carnitas Uruapan, serving pork that's hot and golden—a work of art in its own right.

Where to Eat

The tacos from Taqueria El Milagro are always fresh because it's also a tortilla factory. The Jibarito Stop is a delicious Puerto Rican restaurant known for jibaritos —picture a steak sandwich with fried plantains instead of bread. For classic hot dogs, you have to go to Memo's, which has been in the neighborhood for generations. People love Carnitas Uruapan for their famous shredded pork. And don't forget a concha from Panaderia Nuevo Leon bakery.

Where to Drink

Caminos de Michoacan is a traditional Mexican bar with a pool table and no bougie flair. The Giant Penny Whistle is a newer place with a younger crowd; DJs play a mix of funk, soul, house and Latin music. Cafe Jumping Bean is the classic spot for coffee.

Where to Shop

For throwback clothing items, check out Pilsen Vintage . Their selection is amazing. Tonantzin is named after the Aztec Mother Goddess, and it's a little artisan gift shop with funky hours. There's also Mestiza , which has products from local artists and Mexico.

Where to Find Art

The always-free National Museum of Mexican Art offers performances, concerts and an annual Day of the Dead exhibition. There are outdoor festivals in Pilsen, like the Mole de Mayo and Fiesta del Sol. And, of course, you should take a guided tour of Pilsen's murals (with Tubens!) through Pilsen Public Art Tours .

What's the deal with Pilsen?

Though it was originally founded by Irish and German immigrants, it was the sizable population of Czech immigrants who settled in the area in the wake of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that eventually named Pilsen after the city of Plzeň in the Czech Republic (formerly known as Bohemia). During the late 19th century and early 20th century, Czech immigrant established contemporary landmarks like the St. Procopius church and Thalia Hall, which was modeled after an opera house in Prague.

It wasn't until the mid-1900s that Pilsen began transforming into a hub of Chicago's Hispanic community, as Mexican American families displaced by the construction of the Stevenson Expressway and the University of Illinois campus moved south. By the early 1970s, Pilsen's population was predominantly Mexican American and vibrant murals had started to take over the sides of buildings.

Today, Pilsen is still changing, as new buildings, businesses and residents move into the neighborhood. More than a destination for amazing Mexican cuisine, live music, beautiful public art and great vintage shops, Pilsen is a neighborhood where it's easy to spot evidence of the various eras of its history, whether you're walking on 18th Street or searching for murals on side streets.

If you only do one thing

Get an order of carnitas (braised shredded porks) at one of the various Pilsen restaurants that specialize in the Mexican delicacy. Whether you sit down at Carnitas Urupan , Carnitas Don Pedro or Sabas Vega , you'll be able to order a pile of pork, accompanied by totillas and salsa.

Go off the beaten track

Just south of Harrison Park, you'll find the home of local artist Hector Duarte, which is covered in an eye-catching mural. Head for the corner of Wolcott Avenue and Cullerton Street to spot it. If you need a drink, find the nondescript building at the corner Cermak Road and Halsted Street—it's the home of Skylark , a great place for a cheap beer some tater tots (with dipping sauces).

On a sunny day

Spend some time in Harrison or Dvorak Park before taking a stroll along a railroad embankment to see the 16th Street Murals , featuring work by artists like JC Rivera, Hebru Brantley and ROA. Cool off with a visit to the hot pink La Michoacana Premium , where you'll find paletas, ice cream, aguas frescas and more tasty treats.

On a rainy day

Head for the National Museum of Mexican Art , a local institution that showcases works by both Mexican and Mexican American artists—admission is always free. If the rain hasn't let up, you can sit down for a bottomless cup of coffee at Cafe Jumping Bean .

Get cultured

Pilsen is filled with small (and large) galleries, including notable spots like Women Made Gallery , House of the Apocalypse and Mana Contemporary . Music lovers should make their way to Pilsen's record stores, including 606 Records and Pinwheel Records . And if you happen to be around in the evening, you should see who is taking the beautiful old stage at Thalia Hall , the neighborhood's most prominent music venue. 

Sit down at La Luna to sip a margarita (or a michelada) or head to Lo Rez Brewery  to sample a selection of creative local beers. For an even more relaxing afternoon, try browsing the shelves at Pilsen Community Books , a local store with an impressive collection of rare and vintage tomes.

Find tacos and cocktails—as well as some gorgeous all-seasons patio spaces and a speakeasy called The Alderman—at Pilsen Yards . And if you love to end your evening listening to live music, Giant Penny Whistle nearly always has a DJ behind the decks spinning everything from salsa to soft rock.

Nearest CTA stations

Heading to 18th Street? The 18th Street Pink Line Station is your best bet. The Damen and Western Pink Line stations are also located within the neighborhood, but they're best for those traveling farther west to businesses along Cermak Road or in the old Heart of Italy.

What else is nearby?

From Pilsen, you can walk south (across the South Branch of the Chicago River) to Bridgeport, where you can scale the hill at Palmisano Park. It's also not far to Chinatown, which is just to the east of Pilsen. And if you're looking for a huge stretch of green space to traverse, Douglas Park is to the west.

Experience the grandness of Pilsen’s murals with poet and multidisciplinary artist Luis Tubens . The public art on railroad viaducts, buildings, and doors shows an evolution of the community’s Mexican identity, heritage, and activism. In the tradition of Mayan and Aztec practices , these murals are vibrant, large-scale reflections of personal lived experiences. The style of the mural paintings has gone through multiple phases–political, social, graffiti, icon art–and will continue to evolve along with Pilsen’s population.

Tubens is a former arts educator at the local National Museum of Mexican Art .  This tour is created in partnership with Pilsen Public Art Tours .

CHICAGO — April showers bring May flowers, and plenty of spring festivities around the city.

Kick off the month with Cinco de Mayo celebrations, tours through Pilsen and Little Village with Chicago historian Shermann “Dilla” Thomas, a Critical Mass bike ride through the South Side, a pop-up makers market and more.

There’s also a Kentucky Derby party at an Irish pub, a new theatrical adaptation of “Bluey” on stage at the Auditorium Theatre, a massive record sale and Chicago Humanities Festival events.

West Town First Friday

5-8 p.m. Friday

West Town Chamber of Commerce, 1819 W. Chicago Ave., and other venues

The West Town Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art for a new exhibit opening Friday evening. In conjunction with West Town First Friday, a time when local art galleries stay open late, the month-long exhibit will kick off with a family-friendly opening at 1819 W. Chicago Ave.

Neighbors can also visit participating art venues that will be open until 8 p.m., such as Vertical Gallery, Fulton Street Collective, The Chicago Fine Art Salon, ARC Gallery, Mariane Ibrahim Gallery and more. Find more information here .

Southside Critical Mass Chicago Bike Ride

5:45-10 p.m. Friday

Start at the south end of Nichols Park, 1300 E. 55th St.

Join fellow Chicagoans and cyclists for a monthly social bike ride through the South Side, which takes places on the first Friday of each month April-November. The group normally travels at a moderate pace of 15-20 miles per hour. Participation is free, but all riders are responsible for their own bikes, masks, helmets, water, bike locks, bike lights and other gear.

The goal of Critical Mass is to uplift cycling as a method of transportation in Chicago and “to make our neighborhoods more bikeable and … liveable.” Learn more here .

‘Bluey’s Big Play’

Marché Privé is a new luxury pop-up market and daytime social for Chicago entrepreneurs who are Black, Indigenous or people of color. It’s hosting its inaugural themed showcase this weekend in honor of Derby Day, featuring more than 15 local vendors, a bar and music by a DJ. Attendees are encouraged to wear derby-inspired attire.

Old Town School Of Folk Music Record Sale

Cinco De Mayo Tours With Dilla

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a two-hour bus tour of Pilsen and Little Village, two of Chicago’s oldest neighborhoods, led by Chicago historian Shermann “Dilla” Thomas. Dilla will cover their histories dating to the 1800s, from the “Bohemian Czechs who laid out the streets … to the burgeoning Mexican communities of today.” Sites include Benito Juarez High School, the 16th Street murals, the Mexican Museum of Modern Art and Thalia Hall.

2 shot, 1 fatally, on Lower West Side

A witness told police they saw a white SUV fleeing the scene.

Two people were shot on Saturday in the 1700 block of West 18th Place.

One person was killed and another wounded in a shooting Saturday night on the Lower West Side.

A man and a woman were outside about 9:15 p.m. in the 1700 block of West 18th Place when someone opened fire, Chicago police said.

Victor Martinez Mejia, 27, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The woman, 24, was struck in the leg and taken to the same hospital in fair condition, police said.

No one was in custody.
