College is a major investment, and the only way to really know if you’ve found the right fit for you is to see it in person. That’s why campus visits are such an important piece of the college search puzzle. Only now we’ve found a way to make it even more fun…

Go on our Campus Visit Scavenger Hunt!

Below you’ll find our official Campus Visit Scavenger Hunt map. Okay, we know your college campuses won’t look exactly like this, so don’t take it too literally. (You might get lost!) But the buildings and landmarks listed can be found at practically every college—and they’re all places you should try to see during your visits. Take the map along on your next campus visit and check off all the stuff you can find. We’ve also included questions to help you learn more about your colleges; use them as a guide to talk to students, professors, and staff at each stop.

Important stops

These are all the essential buildings and areas to check off on your campus visits! You’ll find more details on the map, but here is a helpful introduction to each landmark. So you can make your quest a success:

  • Student union: The hub of campus life. Could also be called a hall, center, or commons.
  • Library: Students may be busy here, so be sure to respect the quiet.
  • Dining hall: Depending on the size of the school, there could be one dining hall or several. Try to have at least one meal on your visit!
  • Dorms: They’re sometimes scattered all over campus, so focus on where you’ll be living as a first-year student if you’re in a time crunch.
  • Academic buildings:  These may also be all over campus, so center your attention on your future major department’s headquarters if you have a program of interest.
  • Athletic facilities: If there’s a game going on while you’re visiting, go!
  • Recreation and fitness center:  See if there are some classes, rec clubs, or exercise equipment you enjoy, since most gym memberships are included in your tuition and fees .
  • Administrative offices: You don’t have to visit all these buildings, but you should try to meet with an admission counselor so they’ll have a face to associate with your application.
  • Health facilities: Hopefully you won’t be spending a lot of time here, but it’s important to know where they are just in case.
  • Career center:  This place is not just for seniors! You should make the career center one of your first stops when you start classes.
  • Auditorium or performance center: Check out all those flyers at the student union to see if there’s a concert, lecture, or student production going on while you’re visiting.
  • Campus mall or quad: There will be plenty of students hanging out here if you visit during the school year, so don’t be shy—introduce yourself and ask them a few questions !
  • Bonus finds: See the map for details. You won’t find these on every campus, but we’ll give you extra points if you do.

SocialPoint Audience Engagement Platform

11 Best Campus Scavenger Hunt Ideas for New Student Orientation

SocialPoint Campus Scavenger Hunt

Most new student orientation programs want to help students make a successful academic and social transition to the university community and university life. The best orientation programs help reduce student attrition. Engaged students are retained students.

Many of the programs try to drive students to university buildings, greenspaces, the student union, and other campus highlights. But you can go beyond that.

We’ve partnered with a number of universities to design more creative campus scavenger hunt for their new student orientation. Here are some of the best ideas:

  • Get to know the buildings on campus: Getting people to learn where the buildings are located is campus scavenger hunt 101. So have them visit your Business, Art, Science, Law, Engineering, and Education buildings. There are a variety of QR code challenges that you can create, such as:
  • Visiting a popular lecture hall.
  • Finding a factoid about the alumni whom the building was named after.
  • Standing near a popular arch on campus.
  • Answering trivia about the alumni for whom the building is named.
  • Take a picture with your favorite piece of art.
  • Take a picture with a student heading to an interview (Business school).
  • Campus library: Ask students to visit the library and take a picture in the stacks. Since it’s during orientation week, they won’t have to be as quiet!
  • Career center: Getting a job after graduation is a parent’s goal for their son or daughter’s college career. Let’s make sure they know where the career center is.
  • Founder statue : It seems like all campuses have a statue of the founder or another legend on campus. Have the students strike a pose at one of these statues.
  • Mascot: Challenge your students to find the school mascot on campus and take a picture. It could be a painting, sticker, or statue. If you’re really lucky, it will be a live person in costume!
  • Legendary campus sites: Some campuses have legendary sites such as the Block M on the diag at Michigan, Touchdown Jesus at Notre Dame or the Sample Gates at Indiana University. Your campus probably does too! Set a QR code near that famous location that asks students to post a photo of themselves at this site.
  • Student union: Many student unions are full of interesting activities and things. So, you could choose one or two places inside for students to visit to make sure they get to know the building better.
  • Sports stadium: Ask students to scan the QR code in front of your sports stadium and take a picture with their new friends. (Stadiums are really big so let them know what entrance has the QR code.)
  • Get to know the university clubs & groups : Setup a QR code for each of the campus clubs and university groups. Then have students earn points for visiting the clubs.
  • University swag : Everyone needs to know where to buy university swag. You can have players scan a QR code that gives them coupons for sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats, sweat pants, koozies, and other products emblazoned with your university’s logo.
  • Attending orientation courses : Give players points for attending courses on safety, smart spending, alcohol and sexual violence, healthy eating, technology, or getting advice about transitioning to campus life.

Want a smoother experience for you and your new students? Set up your campus scavenger hunt game to use QR codes rather than an app.

The best thing about a QR code scavenger hunt is that players only need to use their phone’s camera to play. It’s so simple: Scan the code. Complete the challenge. Done.

  • Because there is no app to download, players more easily participate with just their camera’s phone and a web browser.
  • Players need to visit specific physical locations to scan the QR code.
  • Points, Rewards and more can still be delivered through the web browser.

Improve Your New Student Orientation With A Fun Campus Scavenger Hunt

New students are excited and nervous about starting college on your campus. Unfortunately, with a dull new student orientation, they will also be bored.

By hosting a fun scavenger hunt as part of their new student orientation, you’ll make sure they learn useful knowledge and bond better with their fellow students, increasing student retention.

College Scavenger Hunt Ideas (plus free template)

If you’ve found this article, chances are you’re looking for ideas to engage your student groups or faculties with something fun. Enter campus scavenger hunts!

The activity needs to hit all the right spots for your participants:

  • It needs to make clever use of the campus facilities.
  • It needs to be creative without coming across as stilted or lame.
  • It needs to be fun.

If you’re a student, you’re likely looking for something to help with orientation activities to get the freshmen familiar with the campus and each other. Other times it could be team bonding between different faculties, student bodies, or student organization camp activities.

If you’re faculty staff, you might be looking for something fun to help with faculty onboarding or team bonding activities without the stigma of being ‘mandatory fun.’

Fortunately, scavenger hunts done well can hit all those boxes and more. We’ll give you detailed steps, templates and a few must-haves to help your scavenger hunt be kickass and successful. We've also included a free downloadable template (read on to access the link)!

First, let’s figure out what we want:

Setting the Objective: What Do You Want Them To Experience?

campus tour scavenger hunt

There are plenty of objectives where scavenger hunts can neatly fit in, but knowing who your participants are and what your focus is should always be the starting point. Things get a lot easier when you design around what you want your participants to do and what they would find interesting.

Having been campus scavenger hunt planners and participants ourselves, here are a few objectives we’ve seen fit college scavenger hunts:

  • Orientation or Faculty Onboarding

Contestants need to know where the main buildings, important facilities and key landmarks are on campus. This leads to a scavenger hunt that could span your entire faculty or even campus with suitable activities too.

  • Building teamwork and cohesion within student groups or faculties

Planning activities that require them to work together and making things more competitive are a must.

Setting the Right Theme and Tone for the Audience

Since there’s no limit to human creativity, the best question to ask around themes is: would your participants like it? If you want to have themes around history, specific figures or even concepts that require thought-provoking discussion, this is your chance to involve them interactively.

For students, something closer to the latest action movies would fit. For faculty members, something from their generation would fit better.

On another level, you’ll also want to decide how competitive or laid back the scavenger hunt is going to be as well. This will affect how you’ll want to design your clues, riddles, tasks and scoring.

You can adjust the scoring methods to make things more competitive, such as rewarding teams with more points for finishing as many tasks as possible within a fixed time limit or finishing tasks quickly.

Psst. We’ve prepared a free planning template to help you with planning and scoring which you can download here !

From our experience, we’ve experienced some school activities built around pop culture references and movies, but there can be some timeless ideas too. Here’s a quick list of themes:

  • Today’s Pop Culture

We’ve seen scavenger hunts and station activities themed around things like the Netflix show Squid Game or Running Man for instance.

Since scavenger hunts are about solving riddles, mysteries are a good fit. If you want a time limit you could say that you need to apprehend the suspect before he escapes, and the team that apprehends him first gets the grand prize.

  • Action Flicks

One scavenger hunt (or large-scale escape room experience) we’ve experienced is where you’re a group of security agents racing to defuse a bomb. The final task was to play ‘keep talking and nobody explodes’ to win the game within a set time limit.

Fitting in with the ‘finding stuff’ theme, this could be something akin to pirates or finding treasure hidden in the jungle.

Shutter island type mysteries, haunted mansions, zombies, plagues. You could design the tasks around the theme or finding an escape, a cure, or something else.

  • Historical Culture

This theme is rather broad, but we’ve seen people theme their scavenger hunts around the history of your school or even ancient history such as Spartan military training. This could fit in with more physically-demanding tasks if that’s what you need to design your college scavenger hunt around.

  • Food Trails and Pub Crawls

For something more laid back, why not design clues around finding the best food and drinks in town? Now thats something everyone will be happy to hunt down.

  • Based On the City You’re In:

Your city or campus could have features unique to it. For example, if your campus is in Oklahoma, USA you can get the students to use the streetcar systems to get around. If your campus is in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia you could incorporate the Light Rail Transit system to widen the scavenger hunt.

  • List Out the Scavenger Hunt Activities Based on Your Objectives

While your goals may vary, here’re 8 different activity ideas you can incorporate into your scavenger hunt grouped by the objectives they serve best.

Ideas for Orientation and Onboarding

Download the template here!

1. Visit Important Locations on Campus

For those who are new to the college, whether they are students or staff, knowing where all the facilities and offices are is key.

You can design an orientation scavenger hunt route that systematically takes them throughout the whole campus and design games designed to help them find these buildings. For instance, you could start them off in the auditorium, take them to the library, dining halls and career offices and other key landmarks.

If your college consists of multiple large buildings around campus, such as Oxford University or the National University of Singapore, you can make use of Google Maps coordinates and clues that include instructions on how to get around to guide them to the buildings they need to go to.

There are also scavenger hunt apps like Playtours that can help set online map coordinates to activate their next tasks when they arrive there.

campus tour scavenger hunt

Station 1 set to online map coordinates on Playtours

You can write down the Google Maps coordinates of the buildings on the activity sheet, or get even more creative. In the example below, the organizers used the shape of the flats as ‘keys’ and asked participants to find the right one. Block 116 in Singapore’s Paya Lebar looks sufficiently like the teeth of a house key.

2. Making Use of General Facilities on Campus

Some colleges have different facilities that can make for great scavenger hunt experiences. Do you have different on-campus housing? A running track? A campus green? Swimming pool? Gymnasium?

Not only should these facilities be visited by students and new staff, but you can also set up activities around these facilities themselves.

Some universities like National University of Singapore have different types of residential options spread across the campus. Remembering where each of them are could be a little challenging.

You could set up some tasks in these different residences or halls and give them clues to get the right halls. E.g. There are 6 hostels in NUS, but only one of them is named after Singapore’s old name:

  • Eusoff Hall
  • King Edward VII Hall
  • Raffles Hall
  • Temasek Hall (Temasek is the old name of Singapore)
  • Kent Ridge Hall
  • Sheares Halls

When participants  arrive, they can then find a station master or scan another QR code there to begin their next tasks.

3. Facilities Outside Campus

In the first activity, your scavenger hunt can take people around campus, but why stop there when you can take them beyond campus too?

If your college is located in or near towns, cities or an area with external facilities and places of interest, you can set up your scavenger hunt to get your contestants to familiarise themselves with these as well.

To make sure that they visit these locations, you can get them to take selfies of themselves around a landmark or shop in these areas too.

If you want them to take a set route to visit these areas, you can try looking for a scavenger hunt app like Playtours that splits the activities into chapters, so participants will only see the next clues when they’ve finished their most recent tasks.

campus tour scavenger hunt

4. Incorporating Campus Values and Trivia with Riddles

Colleges and universities tend to have a lot of rich history and meaning behind them. Some of the activities that you can plan into your orientation scavenger hunts could require participants to look these up to solve the riddles you’ve placed for them.

Did you know the motto of the University of Oxford is “ Dominus illuminatio mea ” or “The Lord is my light”. This motto is the incipit (or opening words) of Psalm 27: “ The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?”

Many universities like the University off Oxford and Cambridge in the United Kingdom were originally monastic schools for the study of theology, hence the religious nature of their history.

Crosswords could be a good way to get your participants to engage with all the different trivia and history of your college. If your college has a rich history or different meanings to find, these could be grouped together in a crossword to reveal a hidden code to lead your participants to the next scavenger hunt clue. You can set up crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzle types in scavenger hunts on Playtours too.

campus tour scavenger hunt

5. Celebration of Campus Life

Some colleges and universities have mascots or statues on their property. While serving as landmarks, they can also serve as a great way to create memories for your participating teams.

As an activity idea, why not get your teams to post team selfies with the college mascot or statue in question?

6. Interactions with stakeholders outside your group

To round off the orientation and onboarding ideas, you can set up activities to get participants to interact with people from the facilities that they need to use.

You could get them to get the names of some of the library or career office staff for instance or take photos with them to be checked and judged by the scavenger hunt team.

If you're looking for other apps that can help elevate the campus experience, check out our article on the best apps for orientation and campus life here !

Ideas for Cohesion and Team Building

While orientation is great for freshmen, scavenger hunts are great activities for bringing your student groups or staff members together.

You could craft something more laid back so that the team has more chances to just work with one another, or you could inspire them with a more competitive edge.

If you want to push their teamwork via competition, you can craft different activities that require them to identify their talents, require them to think as a team and also have a prize that makes them want to compete and work together to win.

7. Variety show or Amazing Race style activity stations

Scavenger hunts don’t have to be limited to just answering questions and riddles. You can instead use the clues to bring teams to different stations to complete various tasks.

And one way to encourage talent diversity in teams is to mix up logic and physical activities in your scavenger hunt. These can range from simple ones like putting together physical puzzles to tougher ones like scoring 3-point shots in basketball. Once the activity is complete, the team can be given their next clue, just like in the show.

This is also an opportunity to make use of the different buildings and facilities laid in your campus depending on the tasks you want them to complete.

8. Food trails and pub crawls

This is a more laid back option, and something that college and university goers could also appreciate greatly.

Considering that scavenger hunts can be designed to lead people on a route, you can also get them to hunt for clues and even have food at different shops and pubs.

You’ll need to work together with the shops and pubs you’re planning to include the game of course.

To help you, you can check out our downloadable template that helps you to keep in mind your objectives, target audience, plot them out on a map of the area and also a section for planning the different tasks.

campus tour scavenger hunt

The scoring of the scavenger hunt sets the tone and pace of the whole activity whether competitive or relaxed. (Download the template here !)

If you want them to have a competitive experience, there’s a number of ways you can go about it:

  • Finishing the most number of tasks within the time limit

You can assign points to each activity and set a tighter time limit to the whole activity. This can encourage teams to split up and cover ground more effectively too if that’s your aim.

  • Assigning points based on task difficulty

Easier tasks can be worth fewer points, and harder tasks that require more teamwork can be worth more points. This scoring method works well in more competitive scavenger hunts.

  • Scoring based on how quickly tasks are completed

If you’re going for Amazing Race activities in your scavenger hunt, you can have station masters time the team at each station and provide more points the faster they finish the puzzles or tasks

  • Penalties for wrong answers

If you’re using scavenger hunt apps, some of them include certain answer types that could be abused by multiple wild guesses. If you don’t want to encourage this, you could set your hunt up so that there is a point or time penalty for wrong answers.

  • Leaderboards

Some interactive scavenger hunt apps can update team points in real-time, letting teams know who’s ahead and who’s behind.

Alternatively, if you’re going for non-competitive scavenger hunts, you could do away with the point systems entirely to let teams focus on finishing the tasks at their own pace

Choosing Your Platform to Put it All Together

Now that you’ve got your whole scavenger hunt planned out, you can consider how the game will be played.

Simpler scavenger hunts can be played using A4 paper game sheets distributed to each participant or team. Coordination can be done via mobile phone in case teams get stuck or need clues.

You could try out a scavenger hunt mobile app designed around expanding and streamlining what you can achieve with your scavenger hunts.

  • Location-based tasks

Scavenger hunt apps like Playtours can link up with online maps to create “physical stations” where player have to go before being able to see the task set there.

This is a great feature for the exploration teams need during orientation activities

  • QR Barcodes

QR barcodes can be used in many different ways in scavenger hunts. They could be ‘items’ to be found or be the trigger to give teams their next clues without needing to use a physical object.

This feature links well with getting your teams to familiarise themselves with different facilities around campus or to give them the clue to their next station’s location for team building hunts.

  • Image submissions accessible by the game master all in one place

With chat apps becoming widely used, it’s possible to have teams send the selfies or activity photos to the game masters individually for judging.

However, some scavenger hunt apps lets the game masters see all the teams’ photos all in one place and approve or reject them right from there instead.

  • Multiple answer types

Different scavenger hunts will need different ways of answering your riddles. Apps like Playtours have support for many different answer types like:

  • Multiple Choice
  • Word Search
  • Matching Pairs
  • Scrambled Phrase
  • Image Jigsaw
  • Combination Lock

Worried about misspellings and capitalisation? Apps like Playtours have multiple ways of receiving answers, including leeway for capitalisations and spelling.

We hope that you’ve found this guide valuable and we wish your next scavenger hunt to be a great one.

11 tips for creating a memorable campus tour

In an era when prospective students and their parents can learn about nearly any college from the comfort of home, the in-person campus tour offers an excellent opportunity to influence enrollment decisions.

But too often, these tours follow the same staid formulas, potentially blending together in the minds of families who may visit more than a dozen schools during their searches. Creating a memorable tour can maximize visitors’ time spent on your campus and finalize their commitment.

Here are 11 suggestions for increasing the effectiveness of a campus tour.

1. Sweep them off their feet

As campuses grow, many institutions find creative ways to help visitors see all the best features, no matter the distance. Golf carts, vans and Segways have become common additions to the traditional walk. Some schools even offer trips by boat and bicycle.

2. Set up selfie opportunities

Pointing out popular spots on campus for selfies can generate a social media experience that also showcases the institution’s best assets.

3. Create unique events

By going beyond a traditional campus walk-through, institutions can make a big impact and an instant connection. Personalized parking signs for prospective visiting students, a campus scavenger hunt, or inclusion in an institution’s notable tradition can generate extra enthusiasm and interest.

5. Offer customizable schedules—and language choices

Being able to organize their own tours allows students to focus on relevant areas. For example, a future commuter student may skip a dorm tour to meet with a financial aid counselor. Colleges looking to attract multicultural populations must provide tours in multiple languages.

6. Go for intimacy

Many smaller institutions already offer individual tours for prospective students, so larger ones should try to keep tours at or below the student-teacher ratio. In-person meetings with faculty have also become more common, as it allows for direct connections and immediate feedback.

7. Meet visitors’ basic needs

It’s important to remember visitors’ immediate needs, as walking them around campus without a break or a beverage can send a bad message. A lunch can also make a strong impact: A student host, faculty member or coach can have lunch with visitors and steer the conversation toward why the school is a great fit.

8. Veer off the script

Admissions offices should encourage student guides to go beyond the standard tour script and share their own personal experiences and reasons why they chose the institution, which may resonate better. Grouping together two or three guides on each tour can offer a variety of experiences.

9. Don’t avoid the safety discussion

Going off script doesn’t mean avoiding more serious topics, which means preparing tour guides to answer questions regarding safety. Highlight efforts such as hurricane preparedness, campus security and emergency response.

10. Elicit real feedback

Customized visitor surveys can provide admissions departments with feedback on anything from a tour route to a guide stumbling over a tough question. Learning what works—and often more important, what doesn’t—helps optimize tours.

11. Campus tour needs to be authentic

Tours need to present an authentic view of the campus experiences. Don’t just showcase the shiniest, newest facilities, especially if prospective students will not have access to those facilities until later in their academic careers. Being honest with students can help shape expectations and lead to future student success.

We've prepared this list of campus-based scavenger hunt ideas as a starting point for student orientation organizers preparing a custom scavenger hunt for incoming freshmen, or any administrators putting together a fun activity for alumni and visitors.

The list is filled with generic Missions involving common buildings and areas found on most North American college and university campuses. We realize that not all of them will be applicable in every case, and we highly encourage organizers to further customize the Missions to their school before running their game.

Organizers should start by:

  • Adding in proper names for whom your faculty-specific buildings were named after.
  • Modifying the Mission requirements to involve traditions and rituals specific to your institution's faculties.
  • Adding in the correct answers to text Missions (all answers are currently accepted).
  • Creating new Missions for any notable/important buildings or locations specific to your school that we didn't include on our list.

Still planning your scavenger hunts on paper and interested in how GooseChase can supercharge your next campus experience? Take a look at our Campus Orientation page to see how easy it is to get started on GooseChase!

121 Scavenger Hunt Ideas and Lists for 2024

scavenger hunt

What Is a Scavenger Hunt? What Is a Treasure Hunt? Are They the Same?

Scavenger hunts have been around for ages. They’re a popular choice for people of all ages as a way to make any event or occasion more enjoyable and entertaining. They can even be an event all their own.

The main difference between a scavenger hunt boils down to this:

A scavenger hunt is an activity that has participants go around collecting different items and performing different activities or challenges from a predetermined list.

A treasure hunt , although similar, typically involves participants finding clues one at a time. Each clue leads them to the next clue and so on until the treasure is ultimately found.

Often times, the term is used synonymously, especially in today’s world or team building, virtual scavenger hunt, and scavenger hunt apps.

Who uses scavenger hunts?

Anyone really. It’s a tried and true activity for people of all ages from kids to adults to employees to students and more.

In today’s business world where employees are demanding more engagement and better company culture, these hunts are even used as team-building activities and a way to help remote teams connect and create stronger bonds and better working relationships.

So, what can you hunt for with a scavenger hunt?

The real question is, what can’t you?

There is no shortage of inspiration and pre-planned lists out there, proving that you really can have a scavenger hunt with just about any theme or list of items.

Virtual scavenger hunts are even becoming increasingly popular because so many people are working remotely these days.

Read on to learn about the most popular types of scavenger hunts and clues and how you can plan your own.

How do you organize or create a scavenger hunt?

Traditionally, scavenger hunts were performed with pen and paper.

Fortunately, today, there are apps and platforms like Scavify that make it easy to create, organize, and run your scavenger hunt effortlessly. These apps also take the interaction to a different level with features like photos, videos, GPS, QR codes, trivia, notifications, and more.

1. Adult Scavenger Hunt

The basic adult scavenger hunt can include any theme and type of clues that you desire. These will typically be more difficult than clues for children’s hunts, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. The great thing is that you can choose. Riddles are fun, and you can even take selfies and videos to add to the entertainment.

Adult Scavenger Hunt List:

  • Look in and out and all around, I don’t exist, but everywhere I can be found. (Take a picture of your shadow.)
  • Find two memes that describe your current mood and your feelings about life in general.
  • Take a five-second video doing the most ridiculous thing you can think of.
  • Scrub-a-dub-dub, I’m not in the tub, but I do like to splash around. In a bowl or in a snack container is where I can be found. (Goldfish-- animal OR snack cracker!)
  • Take a photo of the funniest street or business sign in your town.

2. Employee Scavenger Hunt

Employee scavenger hunts are great ways to get people engaged and working together in the office, or any other work environment. They can be fun for corporate events and special occasions, or even just as team-building exercises . Although you really can use just about any clues that you want, things that relate to work are a good place to start.

How to Create Online Scavenger Hunts

If you want to play online or do a virtual hunt, it’s just as easy. All that you need to do is decide on the type of game you want to play and how many people will be playing. Michigan Central Station: What you'll see on the tour

campus tour scavenger hunt

Today is the day when Detroiters get to go inside and see restored marble, limestone and carvings for the first time.

The ground floor of Michigan Central Station opens at noon for public tours that will include 60,000 people over 10 days, based on free tickets given away by Ford Motor Co. and the Michigan Central teams to residents throughout the community and those who went online from all over the country.

Visitors will experience film, art and storytelling about the history of the building and the future that Bill Ford, executive chair of Ford, envisions for the 30-acre campus in Corktown and southwest Detroit.

Here is what people will see, according to materials provided by Ford in advance:

  • The Cube, A Dynamic Film Experience: Inside the historic women’s waiting room, an LED installation "tells the journey of Michigan Central Station: history, restoration and the next chapter."
  • The Story of The Station: A 1,000-foot sculptural timeline of "shared moments of triumph, adversity, innovation and resilience that flows down the center of Grand Hall."
  • Faces of Michigan Central, A Portrait Gallery: Listen to memories recounted by people in their own voice.
  • What’s Your Station Story? In the historic reading room, visitors will be invited to recount their memories and hopes for Michigan Central. "These messages will be memorialized in a time capsule so that future generations can connect with our voices and experience what the station’s reopening means to Detroit residents during this once-in-a-generation moment."
  • Open Archive, Resurrecting a Landmark: Photographs and artifacts that offer a glimpse into what it took to restore the deteriorated site.
  • Poster Vault, A Visual Trip Through Culture: Walls covered with original train posters, vintage postcards, concert announcements, local sports team memorabilia and flyers for past raves.
  • Windows into the Future: A vibrant light installation within the Historic Arcade to learn about the innovative opportunities and programming at Michigan Central, and how it will evolve.
  • Interactive light sculpture: Speak a single-word vision of the future and watch as technology translates it into a pattern of light and color that shimmers across the structure, like a mandala, unique to each visitor.
  • The Kids’ Zone: Includes “color-your-own” posters for people of all ages, a scavenger hunt and Lego blocks modeled into the station.
  • Michigan Central in Motion: Learn about the innovation district where "leaders, thinkers, communities and creators come together to accelerate bold ideas and technologies" and the upcoming park south of the station.

The Faces of Michigan Central exhibit include a range of stories, past and present. Below is just a sample.

Real stories: Kohler

Tomasita "Tammy" Alfaro Kohler and her husband, Ken Koehler, are third-generation owners of Honey Bee Market on Bagley just south of Michigan Central.

"The original owners, my grandparents, were from Mexico. They were immigrants. My husband and I became a team almost 30 years ago," Tammy said. "Michigan Central Station coming here and it being right at the tip of a Mexicantown, we're neighbors. As we call it: Primos."

Ken said, "Ford, he had a vision. We all know what the building looked like. Look where it's at today. When we were building the store, they said, you're going to fix that building up? Are you crazy? I heard that from so many people. My wife and I, our hearts were in it. We want this for the community."

Real stories: Younk

Tiffany Younk is a journeyman ironworker who worked for Midwest Steel at the train station. Her father, Robert Younk, is an ironworker who served as foreman on the project.

"My first day at the station I looked at it and I was, like, 'Well, crap, this is a lot of work. I don't know what I got myself into.' And throughout the three years that we worked here, going through and learning the trade, from being so new and also watching the train station transform into what it is now, it's just awesome to see that."

Robert said, "The station to me, back in the day when I was driving down through Detroit and I was working all around the Detroit area: It was just a lonely, dark old building. It sat all by itself. And you think, there's no way that building's ever going to be salvaged again."

Real stories: Heinzman

Kitty Heinzman arrived in Detroit at age 16 from Westport, County Mayo, Ireland, on March 31, 1958. She waited an hour before her uncle picked her up at the train station, and the majesty of the ceilings captured her imagination that she remembers all these years later, she said.

"You never get over that feeling. I knew this was my destination. And you never get over it. You get emotional, you know, because it's beautiful. Don’t start me again … It's like yesterday," Heinzman said. "... You’re next door to Mexicantown, which is lovely. You've got the Irish, you've got the Mexicans, you've got the Maltese. So look at all the mixtures of people you got here. Everything."
