What a fantastic historic site to visit. The two homes that are on the property also share the barn in the back. The amazing part of the barn is that each house decorated the building to match their house, one barn to houses. Of all the historic sites that I have been to, I can't remember a setup quite like that. They only do guided tours which is good because they have a ton of information to pass along. Plus any question that one might have the tour guides can answer. The wood carvings and stained glass inside the homes were absolutely incredible to see.

Hello Mark! Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We are delighted to hear how much you enjoyed learning about our homes and taking in all of their details- from the hand carved woodwork to the spectacular stained glass windows! We hope to have the pleasure of hosting you again soon!

Absolutely 5* tour of two historic homes. Tour guide, Sue, skillfully mixed facts and personal details into a melange that made me feel that I personally knew the Hackley & Hume families. Beautiful decorative details (stained glass, hand-carved wood) were works of art in themselves. I enjoyed this tour immensely (thank you, Sue!), the modest admission gets you into the Depression Era house and the firehouse museum as well. As long as you're still wearing the wristband, you can access each building. At the tour's end, Sue asked, "Which house would you like to live in?", I want the showcase house, so totally opulent, over the top and so me! A special note to the woman who took my admission: one of the nicest people I've ever met, great attention to detail, reminded me to put my credit card back in my wallet -- thank you for saving me from myself! This tour was so wonderful, I most likely will do it again this summer ... it's just that fascinating.

Thank you for allowing us to host you, J N.! We are delighted to hear had a wonderful experience and we hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back again soon!

I am so glad we visited these homes! If you have the chance you should absolutely go! I enjoyed being able to see the extraordinary woodwork and craftsmanship that went into the Hackley home. Our tour guide was great, brand new but seemed to know his stuff. After the homes we went to the Skolnik House and the Fire Barn that were included in the combo ticket. I also recommend those, both were very interesting. The woman Teresa working at the Skolnik House had so much knowledge about the area and about the homes, it was awesome.

Hello Adrienne! Thank you for visiting with us! We are delighted to hear how much you enjoyed your guided tour of the Hackley & Hume House and your time at the Scolnik House of the Depression Era and the Fire Barn! We look forward to warmly welcoming you back!

I you enjoy Victorian homes, you will certainly enjoy touring these homes. Tour costs $5 but, it is well worth the price. You get a guided tour of the barn and both houses by a very knowledgeable guide. Our tour was 1 1/2 hour tour. The young lady who lead us had many details about the family and their history. It was really, really good.

Two of the most beautiful historical homes I have ever visited. We got a private tour of both homes. Such detail and workmanship in both homes and even the barn! A small donation for the tour and the guide was very knowledgeable. A don't miss gem in a historic residential district started by lumber barons in the 1800s.

These houses are beautiful. Our guide was knowledgeable and patient with everyone's questions. The tour took about an hour. It was well worth the $10 admission. There is still work to be done to finish restoring the houses. We will be back in a couple of years to see it again after more renovations are completed.

Greetings Donna! Thank you for your wonderful review and for allowing us to host you for a guided tour! We look forward to warmly welcoming you back again during your future visits to Muskegon!

Great historic tour! Not one, but TWO house tours. Our tour guide Leigha was very informative and the houses were wonderful to see. Each house, especially the Hackley house, has all hand-carved woodwork and hand-painted stencils get on the walls. The tour lasted a little over an hour and was well worth the price of admission.

Photo of Gwen K.

Fantastic tour of 2 beautifully constructed older homes. Short film and museum displays to start. A guided tour of both houses by a very knowledgeable, friendly guide. They have done a very good job. The woodworking in the Hackley home is amazing. Well worth a visit!

One of Muskegon's hidden gems. Lots to do and see and so much history. If you want to see a pristine Victorian era mansion that is completely redone then this is your place.

hackley hume house tours

The sumptuous Queen Anne house of lumberman Charles H. Hackley is unexcelled in Michigan. Its irregular silhouette is composed of assorted gables, clustered chimneys, bays and porches, and an octagonal corner tower. The rich textures and colors of latticework and shingles and the skillfully carved, turned, and molded spindles, posts, and horseshoe openings enliven the surface of the pine-clapboarded wood-frame house, raising it to the very heights of picturesque. The interior is even more lavishly ornamented with cherry, oak, and butternut woodwork, fireplaces, stained glass, fabric wall covers, ceramic tile, and metals. The Kelly Brothers Manufacturing Company, highly skilled Muskegon woodworkers, did the exquisite interior carving. The reception hall gives the first and most opulent impression of the grandeur of the house.

Hackley came to Muskegon in 1857, reportedly without money. When he died in 1905 his estate was worth more than $12 million. During his life and through his will he gave over $6 million to the city. This home is eloquent testimony to both his personal flamboyance and his success. It was located just up the hill and three blocks away from the Hackley and Hume offices on Western Avenue and 8th Street. The Lakeshore Museum Center, formerly the Muskegon County Museum, owner of the Hackley and Hume houses since 1986, meticulously restored the Hackley house with funds from a millage.

The Hackley house was designed by architect Hopkins (1834–1918), of Argyle, New York, who came to Grand Rapids in 1864 and who originated a mail-order system of selling house plans. He also designed the Thomas and Margaret Ann Banks Hume House, which was built at the same time and by the same carpenters and workmen. It is a larger Queen Anne residence with a profusion of porches, bays, tower, and gables to accommodate the Hume family of seven children. But it is also less ostentatious than the Hackley house and is a gentle, but clear reminder that Hackley, who owned three-fourths of Hackley and Hume, was the senior partner of the firm. The carriage house behind and between the two houses was held in common, each half reflecting the style of its respective home. Hume (1848–1937) arrived in Muskegon in 1872 and worked his way up to the position of bookkeeper for Hackley and McGordon. Later Hackley made Hume a partner, and Hume carried on many of the day-to-day details of running Hackley and Hume.

You haven't lived here until ... you visit Hackley and Hume

The Hackley and Hume Historic Site is located on Webster Avenue in Muskegon. The houses were built in the late 1800s.

IS THAT ONE HOUSE OR TWO? You get two for the price of one (and that's a $5 price for adults and children 12 and up, in case you were going to ask about that.) The two houses are next to each other in Muskegon; they were owned by lumber barons Charles Hackley and Thomas Hume, who were business partners. Hackley bought three lots in 1887 and sold one and half of them to Hume. The Humes moved in the following year and the Hackleys in 1889.

ARE THE TWO HOUSES SIMILAR? Both were designed by Grand Rapids architect David Hopkins in the highly ornamented Queen Anne style and are designated in the National Register of Historic Places. The Hackley House is more exotic, while the Hume House is more modern and open. Both are painted their original colors — Hackley has 13 hues and Hume, 14. The only ones they share are the black of the window sashes and the green of the porches.

TELL ME ABOUT THEM. The two homes were considered modern at the time, because they had central steam heating systems, indoor plumbing and city water and sewer hookups. The Hackley Home is one of the best examples of Queen Anne architecture in North America, according to Dani LaFleur, the Lakeshore Museum Center's historic sites curator. Most notable is its hand-carved woodwork, especially around the ceilings, banisters and walls. Each room has a theme, such as food designs in the dining room and music in the second parlor.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE IN MUSKEGON RELATED TO THEM? Both men were philanthropists; for example, a local park, public library and hospital campus are named for Hackley and Hackley Day, which was established in 1891 and is celebrated every May 25. Hume paid to build a seniors citizens residence, which today bears his name.

ANYTHING ELSE ON THE SITE? The City Barn is behind the two homes, because the two families both used it for horses and coach staff.

WHEN MAY I VISIT? During this year's holiday season, the historic site is open 5-8 p.m. Nov. 28-29; 1-4 p.m. Nov. 30; 5-8 p.m. Dec.12-13; 1-4 p.m. Dec. 14; 5-8 p.m. Dec. 26-27, and 1-4 p.m. Dec. 28. It reopens in April for school tours only and then for the public May to October, when the hours are 12-4 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday.

Lost In Michigan

The Historic Hume House

hackley hume house tours

Thomas Hume arrived in Muskegon from Ireland in 1870. In 1872, he joined Charles Hackley’s lumber firm as a bookkeeper.  Charles Hackley and Thomas Hume became partners In 1881 creating the very successful lumbering firm of Hackley and Hume.

In 1887, Hackley purchased a series of lots on the corner of Webster and Sixth. He immediately sold one and one-half of these lots to Thomas Hume, and then constructed his own house on these lots. Hume engaged architect David S. Hopkins (who also designed Hackley’s house shown in the background) to design his home. It was completed in 1888. The Hume family expanded the house after the turn of the century, adding a library, dining room, and sleeping porch.
