How to get From St Kitts to Nevis: a Complete Guide

Visitors often wonder how to get from St Kitts to Nevis or vice versa as there are many things to do on St Kitts and Nevis . If you are staying on one of the islands for a while it is worth taking the trip to visit the sister island to explore what is on offer there too. This post will break down each method of transport, the costs and how long it takes so you can decide which is the best route for you.

How to get to Nevis from St Kitts Cruise port

For passengers arriving by cruise ship the easiest way to visit Nevis is to exit Port Zante on foot. Turn left down Bay Road and walk for a few minutes over the small footbridge and on the left-hand side is the passenger ferry port. Here you can purchase tickets to Charlestown in Nevis, and there are Five ferries to choose from. This is also the cheapest way to get from St Kitts to Nevis and Vice versa.

If you know what time you need to return to St Kitts from Nevis it is cheaper to buy a return ticket for the same ferry and it costs $50XCD. If you want to be flexible on your return, then you will need to buy separate single tickets for each ferry which cost $28XCD for adults. Children get a reduced rate.

There is also a small departure fee to pay at the port in Nevis which is $2US or $5XCD per person. Be aware if you are trying to leave Nevis at peak times e.g. between 4-6pm then there may be a long wait and you may not get the ferry at the time you want.

The ride takes approximately 45 minutes and the ferries run between 6 am and 6 pm Monday to Thursday. With an additional 9 pm departure on Friday, and further 8 pm and 9 pm ferries on Saturday.

Sunday service is limited, with just two departures in the morning and three in the afternoon. You can view the schedule here and it is updated weekly or you can text “Ferry” to “7568” to get the ferry schedule sent direct to your phone.

Getting to Nevis from St Kitts Airport

If you are arriving to St Kitts by air, there are a couple of ways to get to Nevis. The first but most expensive route, would be to get a connecting flight from St Kitts to Nevis. However, the airport on Nevis is very small and only accommodates small aircrafts and private jets.

Direct flights do not operate very frequently so a private charter may be needed. These take approximately 10 minutes and cost around $600US per person.

If you have booked hotel accommodation on Nevis it is common for guests to be met by the hotel at the airport in St Kitts. You will then be escorted to the water taxi on the southeast peninsula for transfer to Nevis.

The total time from exiting the airport to arriving at your hotel on Nevis should take no longer than an hour. Hotels will usually communicate the cost of the transfer and if it is included in the price of the stay.

If you are travelling independantly the quickest way to get to Nevis from St Kitts airport is to take a taxi from the airport to the water taxi dock at Reggae beach. Taxis cost around $30USD and the water taxi is $20USD for a single trip.

Getting from St Kitts to Nevis by car

If you are renting a car on your trip to St Kitts and want to take it over to Nevis to explore there are a couple of options. There is a small car ferry which leaves from Basseterre ferry port. This only holds 5 vehicles so space is limited.

The best option is to take the Sea Bridge Ferry which operates daily from Majors Bay on the southeast peninsula. The trip takes approximately 20 minutes to cross the channel.

The cost for the sea bridge is $150XCD per car plus $50XCD per person and the ferry arrives in Cades Bay on Nevis.

Fun fact: You have to reverse your car onto the ferry in St Kitts. This is so that you can drive straight off on arrival in Nevis. As there is only one entrance and exit onto the ferry! If you are not confident reversing onto the ferry ask the boat handlers for assistance.

The Fastest route to Nevis

The fastest way to get from St Kitts to Nevis is by water taxi. There are a few different private water taxi companies that depart from Reggae Beach pier on Cockleshell Beach. Or from the Park Hyatt resort on the southeast peninsula. They are more expensive than getting the ferry but much more flexible and the short ride is enjoyable.

The Islander water taxi arrives in Nevis at the Oualie Beach pier and there are usually plenty of taxis waiting on arrival. The Blu Waves water taxi usually arrives at the Yachtsman Grill on the privately owned pier there. It is a good idea to arrange a taxi pickup in advance. Sometimes after a bad storm the pier at the Yachtsman Grill is too damaged to use so they will also arrive at Oualie Beach Pier. If you are departing from Oualie Beach Pier, then the $2US or $5XCD per person departure fee is applicable.

The schedule is frequent with water taxis arriving and departing 12 times per day during the week with late depatures on weekends up to 10.30pm. If you want to arrange a trip at a specific time you can do this in advance by calling ahead but this may cost more.

The journey across The Narrows is fast, taking between 6-10 minutes. Just enough time to enjoy the complimentary Carib beer, Ting or water that is offered.

The cost of a water taxi is $20US or $50XCD for a single trip or $30US or $80XCD for a return journey. This can be paid on the first trip and you will be given a ticket for your return journey.

Cruising to Nevis

There are no large cruise ships on Nevis as the port is not large enough to accommodate them. However, there are facilities to dock smaller cruise ships and yachts around the island. So if cruising is your preferred method of travel then check out Seabourn Caribbean cruises or the luxury Ritz-Carlton Yachts . Prices for cruises will vary according to season so check with the cruise operator before booking.

You can also visit Nevis as part of a catamaran trip from St Kitts port. This is a whole day trip including snorkelling, unlimited alcoholic beverages and lunch on the beach. On arrival in Nevis, you will have a few hours of free time in which to explore the island. The cost of a catamaran trip is $95USD for adults and $47.50USD for children.

So, there you have it, everything you need to know about how to get from St Kitts to Nevis! It really is worth taking the time if you are visiting St Kitts to cross the channel. Nevis has a lot to offer that you won’t find on St Kitts, such as the hot springs and some lovely boutique hotels like The Hermitage Plantation Inn .

St Kitts Cruise Port Guide | 9 Best Things To Do In St Kitts Port

St Kitts panorama

Welcome to St Kitts cruise port guide!

Officially named the Federation of St. Christopher (St. Kitts) and Nevis, St Kitts and Nevis is a small country formed by two islands in the Leeward Islands chain of the West Indies. Basseterre, the capital city of St Kitts, was founded in the 17th century and is one of the oldest seaports in the Eastern Caribbean.

With its capital city Charlestown, Nevis Island is smaller and situated around 3 km/2 miles south of St Kitts. Due to its stunning nature, beautiful beaches, and rich historical and cultural heritage, St Kitts (with Nevis) is one of the major Caribbean ports often included in the Caribbean itineraries. In this article, read about:

  • St Kitts cruise port (St Kitts cruise terminal, getting around, helpful cruise info)

St Kitts Cruise Port

Cruise ships dock at Port Zante in Basseterre, the capital city located on the southwest coast of the island. Due to its deep water harbor, Port Basseterre has two berths that can accommodate both large cruise vessels and cargo ships.

Sometimes, cruise ships anchor at the cargo port located a couple of miles further, and in that case, the tender boats are provided to transfer the cruise passengers ashore. On the west side of Port Zante, a small yacht marina is where the tenders normally drop passengers off when the ship is anchored.

St Kitts cruise port - Port Zante.

Port Zante is located within a short walk from the historic center of the city and the port itself is developed and offers a wide variety of facilities. Upon exiting the gangway, after several minutes you’ll reach a vast square filled with restaurants, bars, a casino, souvenir shops, duty-free stores, and international brands including Diamonds International, Effy, Harley-Davidson, and many others.

You will also find a tourist information center, restrooms, tour booths, and a taxi rank. The shore excursion meeting place is usually in the Arrivals Hall located at the terminal entrance (always double-check the tour ticket, though).

St Kitts ferry terminal is situated next to the cruise port terminal (a 5-minute walk) and provides daily ferries between Basseterre and Charleston (Nevis).

Getting Around St Kitts Port

  • Basseterre city center is only a few minutes’ walk from the cruise port and can be easily explored on foot. The port area is flat and suitable for people with walking difficulties and wheelchair users.
  • Port Zante boasts over 60 duty-free stores, selling watches, jewelry, cosmetics, clothing, and handmade souvenirs. There is also a small craft market (“Amina craft market”) where you can buy artwork and handicrafts made by locals.
  • Public transportation is available, however, taxis are the best way to explore the island. I always suggest checking with the tourist information center for guidelines on taxi rates.
  • Transportation used in the Caribbean is usually minivans or mid-size buses with little space for storage.
  • The official currency in St Kitts and Nevis is the East Caribbean Dollar (XCD; currency symbol – X$). 1 USD equals 2.70 XCD. US dollars and credit cards are widely accepted. Check in advance if your change will be given in US dollars.
  • Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport is the only airport in St Kitts and is located 3.5 km/2.2 miles (a 10-minute drive) north of the cruise port.

9 Best Things to Do in St Kitts Cruise Port

1. basseterre old town.

Upon exiting the terminal area, you’ll find yourself on Bay Road street filled with numerous shops, restaurants, and a few historic landmarks. Basseterre’s historic old town is located a stone’s throw from there. To get there, turn left after you exit the terminal and in a couple of minutes you’ll reach an old, arched 19th-century building housing the National Museum , where you can enjoy exhibits on local history and learn about St Kitts’ rich cultural heritage.

After you pass through the archway, walk straight and you’ll come across Berkeley Memorial , a green iron clock tower standing in the middle of the Circus Square , a small yet busy roundabout that used to be the site of slave auctions back in the past. Watch out for the cars here and be careful when posing for a photo, because the area is packed with cars, taxis, street vendors, and tourists.

Turn right to Bank Street and you’ll reach Independence Square , a beautiful park with a fountain and benches to sit and relax. The square has a lot of trees and shade and is dominated by the impressive Immaculate Conception Catholic Co-Cathedral , built out of a grey stone in the early 20th century on the site of an old church.

If you continue to walk along Fort Street, north of Circus Square, you’ll stumble on another architectural gem – Saint George with Saint Barnabas Anglican Church with a stunning bell tower, built on the site of a former Notre Dame Catholic church dating from the 17th century.

Right next to it, a peaceful Wesley Methodist Church is another place of worship worth your attention. These two churches are surrounded by beautiful, well-maintained grounds a bit further from the hustle and bustle of the Circus.

2. St. Kitts Scenic Railway

Do not miss this unique sightseeing tour on the “Last Railway in the West Indies”, the only and last operational railway in the Caribbean! Enjoy the Caribbean countryside and learn all about the history of St. Kitts on a 30-mile circle route by train and a small sightseeing bus.

The railway was constructed in the early 20th century to transport sugar cane from St Kitts’ sugar plantations to the sugar factory in Basseterre. The railway tour normally takes 2h 45 minutes (2 hours by train, 45 minutes by bus) and takes you around the eastern part of the island.

You’ll ride for approximately 30 km/18 miles on double-decker railcars allowing you to enjoy breathtaking views from the top. The bus portion includes around 20 km/12 miles on small, air-conditioned sightseeing buses.

St Kitts Scenic Railway

This tour is one of St Kitts’s highlights and allows you to take in the stunning views of the coast, mountains, forests, villages, farms, canyons, and bridges. You’ll see landmarks such as St. Paul’s Village, Brimstone Hill Fortress, and Old Road Town. It is a scenic train ride and stops at sights are not included.

A ride from Port Zante to the departure point of the railway takes only 10 minutes. This tour is not wheelchair accessible, as the buses and train don’t have a lift and there are steps to be managed. Also, buses cannot take wheelchairs and scooters as they are small/mid-sized.

Make sure to check with your Shore excursions team for ticket availability, as departure times are mostly reserved for cruise ships when in port. You can also check for tickets on the official page www.stkittsscenicrailway.com

3. Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park

This spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Site was built by the British military to protect the island from a French sea attack during the European colonization in the Caribbean. The fortress was constructed by African slaves between the 17th and 18th centuries and sits on a steep volcanic hill providing stunning views of the island’s countryside, coastline, and nearby islands.

Fort George Citadel is one of the areas you can explore and here you can visit Fort George Museum displaying exhibits and interesting historic artifacts. You will hear stories of the soldiers, slaves, and local people, and watch a short video about the fort’s history in an air-conditioned room.

Brimstone Hill Fortress is located on the west shore of the island, approximately 17 km/10.5 miles or a 30-minute drive from Port Zante. The road will take you along the scenic coast, with Mount Liamuiga on your right-hand side. There is a significant amount of walking uphill involved, so be mindful of that. Allow at least one hour to walk through the rooms and explore the fortress.

4. Mount Liamuiga Volcano

Discover the tropical flora of St Kitts on a 6-mile up-and-down hike through the rainforest to 3000 ft above sea level to the crater of this inactive volcano! Mount Liamuiga is 3.792 feet (1.156 m) high and its peak is one of the tallest ones in the Caribbean archipelago. From the top, you can get amazing panoramic views of the neighboring islands including Saba, Statia, St Barths, and Nevis.

5. Take a Trip to Nevis

If you are familiar with St Kitts, then take a trip over to his sister island Nevis! From the Port Zante pier, there is only a 5-minute walk to the ferry station from there you can take a 45-minute scenic boat ride over to Nevis.

The ferry pier in Nevis is located at Charlestown , the capital city and birthplace of Alexander Hamilton. You can visit several landmarks within a short walking distance from the pier, such as The Museum of Nevis History (the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton), Jewish Cemetery , Nevis Hot Springs , and Charleston Methodist Church. Botanical Gardens are nice to see, but you need to take a cab and ride for around 10-15 minutes to get there.

Beaches in Nevis are truly stunning and you can relax on a golden sand beach or cool off with a swim in the tranquil waters of the Caribbean.

The best Nevis beaches are Pinney’s Beach (2.5 km/1.5 miles from the Charlestown ferry pier. You can either walk 30 minutes or take a 5-minute taxi ride), Oualie Beach (8.5 km/5.3 miles from Charlestown, approximately 15 minutes drive to the north), Paradise Beach (4.5 km/2.8 miles, less than a 10-minute drive from the pier), Lovers’ Beach (9.5 km/ 5.9 miles, around 15 minutes drive from the pier to the north), and Nisbet Beach (13.5 km/8.4 miles, or a 20-minute drive to the north).

The ferry from St Kitts to Nevis departs around ten times per day (usually once per hour) and there are several different companies offering ferry rides. You’ll need to select a specific return time when buying a round-trip ticket. The ferries are quite small, so don’t wait for the last ferry, and make sure you plan your day according to your ship schedule.

6. Island Sightseeing

If this is your first time in St Kitts and you want to get to know the island, make sure you start your day on a guided tour of St Kitts and learn the history and lores of St Kitts. Many of these tours will make stops at several landmarks providing you with the opportunity for great photo stops.

One of them is Timothy Hill located at the southern end of the island where you can see the stretch of land that separates the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean (on a clear day you can also see the island of Nevis in the background).

Timothy Hill Viewpoint is located only a 10-15 minute drive from the St Kitts cruise terminal and what you’ll see there is absolutely breathtaking! The area is quite busy and you’ll see many locals selling stuff and offering pictures with wild monkeys (agree on the price first!).

Timothy Hill viewpoint in St Kitts

Another famous landmark and a frequent stop in sightseeing tours is Romney Manor , located 25 minutes drive along the west coast toward Brimstone Hill Fortress. Romney Manor was a plantation house owned by the great, great, great grandfather of Thomas Jefferson.

Nowadays, a part of the estate has been transformed into a gorgeous, European-style garden filled with Caribbean tropical plants. Romney Manor is also home to Caribelle Batik and in the museum, you can see artisans demonstrating the batik process.

You can do sightseeing by bus, ATV, or dune buggy  – depending on your preference, physical shape, and budget. Some of the tours also include stops at Brimstone Hill Fortress and Basseterre highlights.

7. Rainforest Zipline Adventure

Fly through and over the Valley of the Giants at the historic Wingfield Estate sugar plantation ruins , located near Old Road Town, a 25-minute drive from the port of St Kitts. Experience thrills and fantastic views of local flora and fauna as you zip over the tropical rainforest and old sugar plantations!

The base camp is at Romney Manor and the whole adventure includes 5 zip lines: Line 1 (Monkey Trainer), Line 2 (The Boss), Line 3 (Mango Tango), Line 4 (Brimstone Blast), and Line 5 where you fly to a river pool for the chance to cool off! However, due to the ship’s limited time in port, not all five zip lines are available to cruise ship passengers.

8. St Kitts Beaches and Snorkeling

St Kitts is known for its beautiful sandy beaches, crystal clear blue waters, and great snorkeling for lovers of underwater activities. If you are a beach person, you should definitely consider spending some time at one of the island’s gorgeous beaches. Below is the list of the best beaches in St Kitts:

  • South Frigate Bay – One of the most popular beaches in St Kitts, this white sandy paradise offers calm waters making it ideal for snorkeling activities – look out for sea turtles and colorful sea life, and don’t forget to bring snorkel gear. There is a variety of places to eat and drink and water activities and rentals are also available (kayak, jet ski). South Frigate Bay is located south of Basseterre, around a 10-minute drive from Port Zante (5.7 km/3.5 miles).

South Frigate Bay - St Kitts

  • North Frigate Bay – At this beach located north of South Frigate Bay, the waters are a little rougher as it is located on the Atlantic side. There is a good place for snorkeling close to the Marriott St. Kitts Beach Club , however, take all safety precautions if deciding to snorkel on your own. The Marriot Hotel offers a convenient Resort Day Pass for you to enjoy the hotel facilities and beach area. Food and drinks are not included, however, you can opt for the VIP package where you can get discounts on food, beverages, and spa treatments.
  • South Friars Bay – This golden sandy beach is located on the Caribbean side of Saint Kitts, south of Frigate Bay, approximately 15 minutes drive from the port of Basseterre (8 km/5 miles). Here you will find the renowned Carambola Beach club, restaurants, and rustic beach bars as well as water activities available for rental. This is a popular beach for cruise ship passengers due to its calm, pristine waters and one of the best snorkeling on the island (you will find an abundance of marine life in the southern part next to the Shipwreck Beach Bar).

South Friars Bay, St Kitts beaches

  • North Friar’s Bay – This beach is not really for swimming or snorkeling as it is located on the rough Atlantic side, north of South Friars Bay. This beach doesn’t have any amenities but is ideal for long walks along the beach and scenic views of the shore. It is located approximately a 12-15 minute drive from the port.
  • Cockleshell Bay Beach – This gorgeous white sandy beach is located on the southern tip of the island facing Nevis, approximately 20 minutes drive from the St Kitts cruise port (16 km/10 miles). On Cockleshell Beach, you will find local restaurants, bars, and facilities available at a fair price. Snorkeling is possible at this beach, however, it is not considered to be great.
  • Dieppe Bay Beach – If you are looking to experience a black sand beach at a tranquil location, then make your way to the northern part of the island. There are no amenities available at the beach, however, swimming and snorkeling are quite enjoyable. Arthur’s restaurant is nearby if you are looking for something to eat and drink. This beach is located a 40-minute drive from the port.

This blend is evident in the island’s festivals, cuisine, music, and daily life, creating a unique cultural identity that is both diverse and unified.

Historical Influence

St. Kitts has a storied past that significantly shapes its cultural landscape.

The island was among the first in the Caribbean to be colonized by Europeans, with both the British and the French establishing settlements in the 17th century.

This history is still visible in the well-preserved forts, plantation houses, and colonial architecture scattered across the island.

The African influence is equally profound, brought by enslaved Africans who worked on the sugar plantations, contributing to the demographic makeup and cultural practices of the island.

Festivals and Celebrations

The spirit of St. Kitts shines brightest during its festivals.

The most notable is the St. Kitts Carnival , also known as Sugar Mas, which takes place from late December to early January.

It’s a spectacular celebration of music, dance, and costume that reflects the island’s African and Caribbean heritage.

Calypso and soca music competitions, street parades with vibrant costumes, and traditional folklore performances are central to the festivities.

Another significant event is the St. Kitts Music Festival , held annually in June.

This event draws international artists and local talent in genres ranging from R&B and jazz to reggae and soca, showcasing the island’s diverse musical tastes and talents.

Food of St. Kitts

The cuisine of St. Kitts is a delightful blend of Caribbean flavors, African influences, and a touch of European and Asian tastes.

Its culinary landscape is marked by the use of fresh local ingredients, including seafood, tropical fruits, and root vegetables, creating dishes that are as vibrant and colorful as the island itself. Here’s a taste of St. Kitts’ culinary offerings:

Signature Dishes

  • Stewed Saltfish : A traditional breakfast dish, saltfish (salted cod) is soaked to reduce its saltiness, then stewed with tomatoes, onions, sweet peppers, and spices. It’s commonly served with spicy plantains, coconut dumplings, or breadfruit.
  • Goat Water : Despite its name, goat water is a hearty stew made with goat meat, breadfruit, green papaya, and dumplings, seasoned with local herbs and spices. This dish is a staple at festive occasions and a must-try for those seeking authentic Kittitian flavors.
  • Conch Fritters : Conch, a type of sea snail, is minced and mixed with flour, eggs, and seasonings, then deep-fried until golden. Served with a dipping sauce, these fritters are a popular snack or appetizer.
  • Roti : Influenced by Indian cuisine, roti in St. Kitts is a flatbread filled with curried chicken, beef, or vegetables. It’s a favorite for a filling lunch.
  • Johnny Cakes : These are small, fried breads, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, often eaten as a side dish or for breakfast.

Local Fruits and Produce

The fertile volcanic soil of St. Kitts yields an abundance of fruits and vegetables. Mangoes, papayas, pineapples, soursop, and guavas are just a few of the tropical fruits that add a sweet and tangy flavor to many dishes.

Root vegetables like sweet potatoes, yams, and cassava are also staples in Kittitian cuisine.

Given its island location, seafood is a major component of the local diet.

Fresh fish such as mahi-mahi, snapper, and wahoo are commonly grilled, baked, or stewed.

Lobster and shrimp are also popular, especially when grilled or added to flavorful stews and curries.

Street Food

Street food in St. Kitts offers a genuine taste of island life.

Food trucks and roadside stalls serve up delicious, quick meals like grilled fish, barbecue ribs, and jerk chicken, often accompanied by rice and peas, salad, or local vegetables. It’s an affordable way to enjoy the local flavors.

  • Rum : As in much of the Caribbean, rum is the spirit of choice in St. Kitts, with local distilleries producing a variety of styles. Rum punch is a ubiquitous and refreshing cocktail.
  • Mauby : A traditional drink made from the bark of the mauby tree, fermented and sweetened, often described as an acquired taste due to its bitter undertone.
  • Sugarcane Juice : Once a major sugarcane producer, St. Kitts offers fresh sugarcane juice, a sweet, refreshing drink, often sold by street vendors.

Desserts in St. Kitts often feature local fruits and spices. Coconut is a favorite ingredient, used in cakes, candies, and tarts. Guava cheese, a sweet, concentrated jam-like treat, and sweet potato pudding are also popular.

The food of St. Kitts is a direct reflection of its history, culture, and the rich natural resources of the island. Dining in St. Kitts, whether at a high-end restaurant, a local eatery, or a street food stall, provides a delightful culinary journey through the flavors of the Caribbean.

Port Zante (Basseterre's cruise port) serves the capital city of Saint Kitts and Nevis - an island country in the West Indies (Caribbean Sea). Port Zante is located in a bay on St Kitts Island's southwestern coast. The other cruise port of the country is Charlestown (on Nevis Island).

Basseterre City (population around 13,000) is one of the oldest in the Eastern Caribbean. It was established by France in 1627, under Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc (1585-1637). Port Basseterre is one of Leeward Islands' major commercial seaports.

For the season 2015-2016, Port Zante reported a total of 373 cruise ship calls and 913,716 passengers. Season 2016-2017 was a record-breaker - with 1,125927 million passengers and 569 ship calls. For the season 2017-2018, Port Zante had scheduled 596 ship calls with 1,500993 million passengers.

On January 12, 2017, Saint Kitts Island was visited by 6 cruise liners with total passenger capacity over 16,000. These vessels were RCI-Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas and Freedom of the Seas , Princess Cruises Regal Princess , AIDA Cruises AIDAluna , Marella Cruises Marella Discovery , and also the mega-yacht SeaDream (docked at Nevis Island ).

In 2018 started construction works on Port Zante's new (second) cruise pier which was completed in 2019 and officially opened in November. With the new (2-berth) dock the cruise port now has berthing capacity of 3 of the world's largest passenger ships (of RCI's Oasis-class) simultaneously.

On July 16, 2018, St Kitts received its 1-millionth cruise passenger with the arrival of Freedom of the Seas. The liner docked in Port Zante at 8 am. The lucky cruiser received a free island tour, while all other arriving tourists received complimentary T-shirts. On December 11, 2018, Port Zante handled the Oasis-class liner  Symphony of the Seas (LOA length 362 m, max capacity 6370 pax plus 2400 crew). Symphony OTS visited on a 7-day Eastern Caribbean itinerary roundtrip from PortMiami.

For 2018-2019, two other Oasis-class ships ( Allure  and Harmony ) were also included in Port Zante's schedule. The season had all 8 Royal Caribbean liners visiting 85 times. On December 16, 2019, Port Zante reported a single-day record handling 10629 passengers on 4 ships - Anthem of the Seas , P&O Britannia , Celebrity Summit , Seabourn Odyssey .

Popular tourist destinations on the island visited on shore excursions from Basseterre include Carambola Beach Club (South Friar's Bay), Fairview Great House and Botanical Gardens, Caribelle Batik (Old Road Town's Romney Manor), Palms Court Gardens & Restaurant, Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, St Kitts Scenic Railway (3-hour / 30-mi / 50-km train tour encircling the island).

In 2023, the cruise port had scheduled a total of 364 ship calls, including 9 maiden/first-time visits - by the ships Carnival Spirit, Voyager of the Seas (RCI), Arvia (P&O UK), Seabourn Venture, Silver Dawn (Silversea), Ocean Explorer (Vantage Travel), Azamara Onward, Spirit of Discovery (Saga UK), Albatros (Phoenix Reisen).

Port Zante's largest cruise vessel so far is Wonder of the Seas (Nov 2022), while the ever-largest will be Icon of the Seas (Jan 2024).

Basseterre St Kitts cruise terminal

Cruise ships to St Kitts Island dock (anchor) at Basseterre's Port Zante. Deep Water Harbour (Port Basseterre) is capable of both berthing and anchorage of cruise vessels and cargo ships. It is located in Bay's extreme East.

Basseterre Bay also serves regularly scheduled ferries between Charlestown (Nevis) and Basseterre, with numerous daily crossings. The route is served by 6 ships. Ferry service between Oranjestad (Aruba Island) , Statia (Sint Eustatius Island) and Basseterre, as well as to Philipsburg (St Maarten) is also offered, but with irregular crossings.

Port Zante (on the photo below) is located in the center of the Bay. This pier is only used for docking by cruise ships. Port Zante can accommodate the world's largest cruise vessels and also has a yacht marina.

On October 6, 2018, was inaugurated the new Basseterre Ferry Terminal (building). The USD 1,4-million project included 6 months of construction works, carried out by Public Works Department and local contractors.

Second (new) cruise ship pier

In September 2016 was announced that by the end of 2016 starts the construction of a new (2nd) cruise pier at Port Zante. The formal agreement for the USD 48-million project was signed in 2015.

Two independent proposals were presented to St Kitts and Nevis Government. The Canadian Commercial Corporation was contracted for the project. Before the new pier's construction, during peak season additional cruise ships had to dock at the container terminal in Bird Rock, and all cargo vessels coming into port had to wait before docking - until the cruise liners leave the terminal.

In November 2017, SCASPA (port authority) and Canadian Commercial Corporation signed the contract for the second cruise ship pier construction. Works started in early-2018 and the project was completed within 18 months (in November 2019).

The new docking pier is located west of the old pier and south of the Port Zante Marina. Local subcontractors were hired for the building project. The new pier allows simultaneous berthing of two Oasis-class vessels, which are currently the world's biggest (LOA length 360 m, GT tonnage 227,000 tons, max capacity 6780 passengers plus 2390 crew).

The initial pier design was for only one Oasis-class ship (project cost USD 32 million) but was later lengthened and widened (new project cost USD 48 million). The upgraded design also included a larger Amina Craft Market with a dedicated parking area (for taxis and tour buses), as well as a tug boat (for docking assistance).

The Pier Area: Three different piers, including separate ones for cruise ships and the "Caribe Queen," the island ferry that runs between St. Kitts and Charlestown, the capital of Nevis. Friday and Saturday are particularly good times to be at the pier, when the colorful produce and vegetable market is in session. The terminal area at port Zante has restaurants, shops, and cafes, and it's about a 10-minute stroll into downtown Basseterre also called "The Circus".

As of 2020 the pier is capable of handling four large cruise ships at once. If more than four ships are calling, the other ships will either use the cargo port or tender passengers ashore.

The passengers can walk directly through the "duty free" shopping area and onward to the central downtown area. Before giving you duty-free rates, merchants often ask for something that shows you are not a resident, such as a cruise card, foreign driver's licence, or a passport.

Sightseeing:

An hour's easy walk will show you the highlights of Basseterre, the capital of St. Kitts with about 15,000 inhabitants. Basseterre is ideal for exploring on foot since everything is laid out in square blocks.

Basseterre has been the British capital of St. Kitts since 1727, though it was part of the French sector when the two nations both held the island.

The name Basseterre in French means "low land," which most of the commercial district certainly is; it has been flooded several times.

Be sure to notice the colorful red and yellow wooden fishing boats near the pier with their nets drying in the sun; they make great photos.

Treasury Building Standing right on the waterfront, this domed colonial building is a reminder of the importance of the islands as sugar colonies. Everything that arrived at or departed from St. Kitts went through these arches.

Beware of the guys with the monkeys. They will charge you if their monkeys jump on you and you take a picture.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Taxis are generally available for trips farther afield. Be sure to agree on the fare with the driver before starting out.

Many tour operators are at the dock, often with reasonable fares.

The St. Kitts Scenic Railway takes passengers on a 3-hour tour that makes a 30-mile circle around the beautiful Eastern Caribbean island of St. Kitts, with 18 miles by narrow gauge train and 12 miles on sightseeing buses.

Sky Safari Tours is a highly advanced, scenic zip line tour through the St. Kitts Rainforest, flying over Wingfrield River. This zip line course consists of one trainer line, 180ft long, followed by four larger zip line, lengths from 500ft to 1,350 ft. This tour strives to unite eco-adventure with St. Kitts interpretive knowledge.

Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of historical, cultural and architectural significance: a monument to the ingenuity of the British military engineers who designed it and to the skill, strength and endurance of the African slaves who built and maintained it.

There are many tour companies who offer their services on the internet. Touring this beautiful island is highly encouraged.

Due to strange driving license rules, car rental is not a good option.

The cruise port consists of a large finger pier, a welcome center and a large duty-free shopping area with cafes and restaurants.

St Kitts Cruise Port Guide - Spending a Day in St Kitts

Spend the perfect day in paradise with this St Kitts cruise port guide.

Although I’ve travelled aboard nearly 10 Caribbean cruises in the past, this was my first time visiting the beautiful island of St. Kitts and Nevis. When you only have about eight hours in port, you have to make the most of your time there. Naturally, only one day in a country is not nearly enough time to become absorbed or familiar with it, but it’s better than nothing.

Posts may be sponsored. Post contains affiliate links. I may be compensated if you make a purchase using my link.

I’m a firm believer that cruises are fantastic for a few reasons. First of all, it’s an easy way to travel. You get to leave your luggage in one place, dining choices are easy and plentiful, and many aspects of the holiday are completely included in the cost of the trip. Second, you get to travel to a whole bunch of places without experiencing the pains of travelling. There are no stressful airport visits between countries, no hectic train stations to navigate, and you don’t need to figure out how to get from point A to point B. Last, while you might only get a taste of each place, you’ll discover your favourites. These are the places that you’ll want to visit again for a more in depth trip.

Needless to say, St. Kitts and Nevis is one of those places I’m itching to return to again. Just one day in St Kitts is only scraping the surface, but I’m so grateful to have experienced this gorgeous island, if only for a day. With this St Kitts cruise port guide, you’ll be able to easily enjoy your day on the island by visiting the port itself and venturing out to a beautiful beach.

Our ship, the MSC Divina , arrived early in the morning. With only two cruise ships in port, it wasn’t very busy. As Justin and I had planned an afternoon shore excursion, I woke up bright and early to explore while Justin caught a couple more hours of sleep.

Walking down the dock, I was immediately greeted by a bright, yellow building with flags and signs. One of them stated, “Welcome to St. Kitts – Home of the Brimstone Hill Fortress, the Gibraltar of the West Indies – A UNESCO World Heritage Site.” If visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites is up your alley (I enjoy it myself!), you’ll want to check out Brimstone Hill Fortress. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the chance, but it’s one thing I’d like to return to see.

For those interested in buying some souvenirs or indulging in some retail therapy, check out the shopping malls around Port Zante, Basseterre’s cruise port and shopping centre.

In Port Zante, there are more than 60 duty-free shops offering jewelry, watches, souvenirs, t-shirts, and other wares. I also spotted a small coffee shop, as well as a unique store with silkscreen handmade goods.

I stumbled upon a small crafts market with booths featuring trinkets, handmade jewelry, and other inexpensive souvenirs.

The pastel buildings lining the gated streets in Port Zante are quite picturesque for a shopping centre.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ST. KITTS

St Kitts Cruise Port Guide - Spending a Day in St Kitts

The Treasury Building, built in 1894, is now home to the National Museum of St. Kitts. It highlights the culture and heritage of St. Kitts and Nevis. While I only admired this beautiful building from outside, be sure to explore this museum if you find yourself with enough time in port.

If you continue walking through the archway of the Treasury Building, you’ll leave the port area into downtown Basseterre.

The Circus is an octagonal roundabout, modelled after London’s Piccadilly Circus. The Berkeley Memorial is the focal point in the centre of the plaza, featuring a clock and a drinking fountain. Each of the four clock faces points towards one of the streets that lead to the Circus. If you’re into local landmarks, make a quick pit stop at the Circus to snap a few photos.

INDEPENDENCE SQUARE

St Kitts Cruise Port Guide - Spending a Day in St Kitts

From the Circus, roam around town a little bit and eventually, I am sure you will find Independence Square . This square was originally the site of the slave market as slaves were transported from Africa. It was renamed as Independence Square (from Pall Mall Square) when St. Kitts and Nevis achieved independence in 1983.

The central focal point of Independence Square is a stone fountain to commemorate the introduction of pipe borne water into Basseterre in the 19th century.

VENTURE OUT TO THE BEACH

St Kitts Cruise Port Guide - Spending a Day in St Kitts

One of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen in the world is Cockleshell Beach in St. Kitts . We took an excursion with the cruise ship to visit Cockleshell Beach. It’s possible to go there without an organized tour. In the port, it will be easy to find a taxi driver to take you there. It’s approximately $28-30 for up to four people, one way.

On the way to Cockleshell Beach, you’ll be able to admire the beauty of the island from the vehicle. There’s a scenic outlook on the way where you can view the Caribbean Sea on one side of the road, and the Atlantic Ocean on the other from up high on a mountain.

Our excursion included transportation and lounger chairs to use, and you can also rent umbrellas. We preferred to soak up the sunshine!

St Kitts Cruise Port Guide - Spending a Day in St Kitts

If you’re looking for another gorgeous beach that’s closer to the port, check out South Friars Beach. It’s about $4 per person to take a taxi there. It is a little bit more convenient to visit and also quite beautiful. However, due to its proximity to the port, it will likely be more crowded and I feel as though the view at Cockleshell Beach is more spectacular.

OTHER TOUR SUGGESTIONS

While I really enjoyed walking around the St Kitts cruise port and downtown Basseterre, definitely get out there and take a tour or excursion if you can. See as much of the island as you can. We thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing day in the sunshine at Cockleshell Beach. Next time we’re in St. Kitts, we’d like to explore one of the following other options:

  • Brimstone Hill Fortress :  Because I’m a sucker for UNESCO World Heritage Sites. See all the main sites on a taxi tour.
  • St Kitts Scenic Railway Tour: It’s a three hour trip on the first scenic railway tour in the Caribbean.
  • Catamaran Cruise to Nevis : A day trip on a boat to the neighbouring island of Nevis? Yes, please!
  • Rainforest Tour in St. Kitts : Spend the day in nature to see natural springs, tall trees, and maybe even a monkey or two.
Check out more photos from our day in St. Kitts ! All of our photos are available for purchase from our travel photo album – prints, housewares, and more!

I agree with you that voyaging on water is much easier compared to flights and trains. But is it cheaper also? St Kitts looks so, so gorgeous, and I know a day wouldn't be enough to explore it completely.

St Kitts looks like a beautiful place to visit, especially around the Cockleshell Beach. I also love the architecture along Port Zante. It looks so picturesque.

Great post! Thanks for sharing.

Thursday 19th of April 2018

We spent 2 weeks on St. Kitts a few years ago, in a condo with a rental car for one week. Brimstone Fortress is a must for anyone into history, architecture, forts, or UNESCO site bucket lists. We spent 5 hours exploring on our own, much to the surprise of the very laid back staff. It is quite amazing. I also highly recommend the St Kitts sugarcane train. You take a bus one way and the train the other, getting great commentary and seeing the island from the second level above the height of the sugar cane that is still grown there. The views of the island and Caribbean are spectacular - and the included rum punch and local singers add to the fun. The scuba diving is different than other Caribbean locations, with much fewer tourists and lots of nurse sharks and lobsters along with the usual fish, coral and sponges. There is a batik factory to have a tour and shop with very reasonable prices for handmade clothes and fabrics, and enjoy the spectacular jungle views. You can also find the usual ATV tours, ziplining the jungle, and shopping. The drive to the ferry to the sister island of Nevis is an eco shock in itself, with the lovely beaches and greenery giving way to desert-like salt marshes. Then the ferry was its own adventure, with a WWII landing craft-style boat, cars parked so tight that you have to decide whether to get out before they park the next one, and park benches tied onto the deck railings for seating! St Kitts and Nevis are transitioning out of being the last source of commercial sugar cane in the Caribbean, to building a tourist industry so it has a quaintness to it not seen on other islands. I highly recommend a longer visit than a cruise stop! But if that is all you have, my vote would be the Scenic Railroad and Brimstone Fortress - and if you can sneak in a stop to the batik factory it is worth it.

The arrival building has bathrooms, a tourist information desk and usually a steel band playing.

  • To your left is also a meeting area for pre-booked local excursions.
  • If you are going to the Marina, turn left and it is a couple of minutes walk away.

  • For taxis and transportation, walk straight ahead and turn right when you see the green signs.

About our local vendors: Take your time and chat with the local tour guides in the square, they can advise and assist you. Basseterre, St Kitts Port Guide

St Kitts

The island of St Kitts is just simply stunning – full of sandy beaches, sugar cane fields, volcanic peaks and lush green rainforest it really is one of nature’s finest. It covers only 68 square miles but packs punch with all it has to offer.

The capital of St Kitts is Basseterre which is located on the island’s south coast. The city of Basseterre has experienced much devastation in the past, much of it through natural disasters including earthquakes, hurricanes and floods. However, there’s a spirit here among locals that offers the best and most relaxed vibe and they are so welcoming to visitors and cruise ships.

Basseterre, St Kitts Fort

Population:  14,000 people (as of 2018)

Climate:  Temperatures average 27 ° C year-round meaning it is mostly hot whenever you choose to visit.

Currency:  the local currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, however, the US dollar is widely accepted.

When to visit:  The summer, peak season, is between the months of December and April – the same as most Caribbean islands. May and June are considered the winter months and thus see fewer tourists.

Flight times from the UK:  Flights to St Kitts from London, UK, take just over 10 hours. This includes an hours layover in Antigua but passengers do not have to get off the plane.

Fun fact: The country is famous for having a large array of bird species – over 200 in fact! So when visiting be sure to keep an eye on the sky!

Basseterre, St Kitts Flag

Port Location:

The port of Basseterre is named Port Zante and is located on the southwestern coast of St Kitts. It has a welcome centre with a large shopping area for all your duty-free purchases. The port has capacity for two berths and so there shouldn’t be too many ships docking at the same time. The island’s museum is also located in the port area and is worth a quick visit to immerse yourself in the island’s culture and history.

Whilst Basseterre is easily reached by foot from the port and is easy to explore as it’s all laid out in square blocks, most passengers docking here will choose to opt for a guided tour or shore excursion to see the islands main tourist hot spots. However, if you do choose to stay local to the port then there’s still plenty to see in Basseterre including the Circus Clock Tower, the courthouse, various cathedrals, shops, and plenty of photogenic buildings in pastel colours. On some days there will also b a local market selling fruit/veg, craft items and tourist souvenirs – don’t miss the sugar cakes!

Basseterre, St Kitts Port Zante

Places of Interest in Basseterre, St Kitts:

St kitts scenic railway.

One of the most popular things to do when visiting St Kitts is take a ride on the St Kitts Scenic Railway . This heritage railway follows an old 18-mile narrow-gauge trail that used to be used for the transportation of sugar cane during the island’s sugar manufacturing days. Whilst onboard there is commentary detailing the sights and the history, and often a choir in traditional dress to keep you entertained. The 3-hour tour is completed with 12 miles on a sightseeing bus completing the full 30-mile circular route around the island. Along the journey visitors will see abandoned windmills, sugar cane estates, amazing views, Brimstone Fortress and more. Most cruise lines that dock in St Kitts will offer an excursion here. It isn’t the cheapest of excursions, with, for example, Marella offering one for £76.

Mount Liamuiga

For those looking for an outdoor active challenge then look no further than Mount Liamuiga. This huge extinct volcano is 3792 foot tall and is located on the Northwest side of the island. Some cruise companies will offer excursions here for the chance to see panoramic views and get a good hike ticked off!

Basseterre, St Kitts Mountain

Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park

Not far from the port you will find Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park. The fort was built in the 17th century and is located at the top of an 800-foot hill that looks down over the Caribbean sea offering stunning views. The fort is pretty impressive as its the most preserved fort in the Caribbean and is now named one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It was designed by the British and built by African slave labour so and so there is plenty of history to the place. An audio guide is available for those keen to learn more. From the top, there are awesome views out to sea and the rest of the island and this spot is a popular one for tourism.

Basseterre, St Kitts Brimstone Hill

Romney Manor

The site of Romney Manor encompasses 8 acres and the grounds have a strong sugar distilling history. There are no organised tours offered here but visitors are able to wander the gardens at their leisure and enjoy some rum punch at the Rainforest Bar. Often if you go with the ship line then they will guide you around. Also on site is a shop and collection of the Caribelle Batik works which can be admired and often you can see colourful clothes being made. Of course, you have the chance to do some retail therapy in the store too! Admission is $3 to enter. A stop here often makes up part of a cruise excursion itinerary.

Fairview Great House & Botanical Garden

Another monument house with a long history that can be visited whilst on the island of St Kitts is Fairview Great House. The house was formerly owned by a rich plantation owner and visitors are welcome to look around. Apparently, Prince Charles has stayed at the house when it was previously a hotel – if it’s good enough for the Royals then it’s good enough for us! Rum tastings and food tours are also offered here. Again, as with Romney Manor, Fairview Great House is often part of a guided excursion.

Basseterre, St Kitts Botanical Garden

Palms Court Gardens & Restaurant

Palms Court Garden is a rather fancy privately owned home which boasts boats stunning views over Basseterre harbour and beyond. Visitors can enjoy the oasis of lush tropical gardens as well as an infinity pool and elegant restaurant. It is a $2 fee to access the 1-acre garden and it is free for children. Should you wish to enjoy some time at the pool then a day pass costs $15 for adults and $12 for children. It really does look very picturesque!

Basseterre, St Kitts Palm Trees

Sky Safari Zip Line

For those feeling a little more adventurous then head to the Sky Safari Zip Line . Most cruise lines offer a pre-booked excursion here and the company recommend you book through them to avoid any disappointment due to limited numbers. Just so you know, if you were booking independently then a 1-hour tour featuring 5 zip lines costs $60 for an adult and $45 for a child so you don’t want to pay the cruise line much more than this!

As you can imagine the island of St Kitts is home to many beautiful beaches. Popular with cruise passengers are South Friars Beach and Frigate Bay South as they are the easiest to reach from the cruise port. Other noteworthy beaches include Cockleshell Beach, Frigate Bay North, Sandbank Bay and Majors Bay Beach – each as stunning as the next. Many local taxis will be happy to offer you transfers to the beaches or even do a customised trip if you want to visit more than one. Be sure to take your snorkelling gear and look out for tropical fish and turtles!

Basseterre, St Kitts Beaches

Tours and Excursions:

According to TripAdvisor, the most popular tour operator for St Kitts is Greg’s Safari’s which specialises in off-road island adventures. Greg’s Safari’s offer various tours including the 4×4 island safari and beach tour, and 4×4 sugar heritage tour. The ‘4×4 island safari and beach tour’ is an “ off the beaten track tour ” exploring the mountains, beaches and south-east peninsular of St Kitts with a beach stop. This tour takes 3.5 hours and costs $65 for adults. The ‘ 4×4 sugar heritage tour ‘ takes guests for a look around the 300-year legacy of sugar production on the island and includes a trip to Shadell Great House. This tour costs $70 and lasts 3-4 hours.

Basseterre, St Kitts Tours And Excursions

For those wanting to head into the rainforest then there are various tour operators offering the chance to immerse yourselves in St Kitt’s eco-system. The tour we looked at began in the gardens of Romney Manor and was followed by a trek through the Central Forest Reserve Natural Park . This trip takes 3 hours and costs just over £50.

With so many lush beaches to explore then a tour of the best ones might be the best way to see them. Private tours to visit 2 of the best beaches will cost about £33 for a 5-hour stay.

For thrill-seekers, there’s always the option of getting on the water and crashing through the waves on a speedboat. Hiring your own speedboat for two this excursion sees you explore the southeast peninsula of st St Kitts on this self-drive tour. This type of experience will set you back about £57 a person.

Basseterre, St Kitts Central Forest Reserve

We love the look and sound of St Kitts and know we would find it hard to choose what we would like to do if docked here. I think for us it’s a toss-up between the St Kitt’s Railway and a rainforest trek, but do let us know what takes your fancy in the comments below! We would love to hear from you!

St. Kitts Cruise Port Guide

A cruise to St. Kitts will take you to Basseterre, the island’s bustling capital, an intriguing mix of whimsically colorful Caribbean architecture and stately Georgian buildings that date back to the 18th century.

St. Kitts and Nevis, its sleepy neighbor, may be small, but both islands offer plenty to see. Explore lush rainforest dominated by towering volcanoes, or unwind on long, sandy beaches. Admire the vibrant coral reefs and green, rolling countryside. Visit Brimstone Hill Fortress, one of the most impressive military structures you’ll see on a Caribbean cruise . There are also grand old country estates to explore, and a vintage railway to carry you through verdant landscapes and along the surf-pounded coastline.

Top sights & attractions on st. kitts cruises, brimstone hill fortress.

Brimstone Hill Fortress is a formidable citadel, regarded as one of the most impressive fortifications of its kind. It’s dubbed the “Gibraltar of the West Indies” due to its impenetrable nature. The fortress, which clings to the side of a hill 800 feet above sea level, was designed in the late 17th century by British military engineers and built over the course of a century by African slaves. Today, Brimstone Hill is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Wingfield-Phillips Rainforest

Learn about the island’s lush nature on a guided hike through the Wingfield-Phillips Rainforest, just outside Basseterre, along one of the many marked trails. You’ll most likely spot vervet monkeys in the trees, as well as lizards, mongoose rustling through the undergrowth, and colorful tropical birds. Combine the hike with nearby Romney Manor, a sugar plantation dating back 350 years. See its gorgeous botanical gardens, 400-year-old rain tree, and batik studio.

Fairview Great House & Botanical Gardens

Basking in tropical gardens, the magnificent Fairview Great House offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the wealthy in 18th-century St. Kitts. The old house, built by the French in 1701, has been painstakingly restored and furnished in authentic colonial style. You can tour the grand dining room, the master bedroom, with captivating views across the water to Nevis, and the bathhouse and old kitchen. In the gardens, there’s an apiary, a tapas bar, and a chance to taste local rum.

Things to do in st. kitts & nevis, ride the st. kitts scenic railway.

The enchanting, narrow gauge St. Kitts Scenic Railway was built between 1912 and 1926 to transport sugar cane from the plantations to the sugar processing factory in Basseterre. Today, it’s a wonderful way to see the island’s rolling countryside on a 30-mile, three-hour loop. The double-decker train rattles along the remote coastline pounded by waves, past the remnants of old plantations and tiny villages where local children wave as you pass

Take a Day Trip to Nevis

Volcanic Nevis lies across “The Narrows,” a short stretch of water separating it from St. Kitts. A 3,230-foot volcano, often wearing a cap of clouds, sits at its center. In Charlestown, the capital, you can see the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, now a museum, as well as other fine examples of Georgian architecture. Explore the town and a local craft village before driving to Pinney’s Beach to cool off, enjoy lunch, and look out for the vervet monkeys that scamper through the trees.

Join a Snorkeling Tour

The waters around St. Kitts are rich in coral reefs, which teem with life, from angelfish to striped butterflyfish and brilliant blue tang. You could also spot graceful sea turtles, eagle rays, and bigger fish such as barracuda and snapper. Local boat crews know the best snorkeling spots. Typically, a snorkel safari will include a stop at a beach bar for refreshments and sunbathing.

Top Food & Drink in St. Kitts

You’ll find an abundance of Caribbean flavors when visiting St. Kitts & Nevis. The islands are blessed with fertile volcanic soil in which everything from soursop and breadfruit to lush mangos and sweet bananas thrive. Locally grown spices include ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, and cloves.

Popular entrees include goat water stew, a rich stew of slow-cooked goat meat, green papaya, onion, chilis, and tomatoes, as well as conch fritters. Conch aside, lobster, wahoo, and mahi mahi (also called dolphin but not related to the marine mammal) are the best seafood to try. The national dish is stewed saltfish. For dessert, don’t miss out on the tasty snack of sugar cake, made from sugar, coconut, and ginger.

Culture & History of St. Kitts & Nevis

St. Kitts was named in 1493 by the explorer Christopher Columbus after St. Christopher, the patron saint of travelers, and later shortened to the more familiar St. Kitts. The first non-Spanish colony in the Caribbean was established by the British in 1624, after which sugar cane became the island’s main industry, in turn establishing St. Kitts as the epicenter of the slave trade in the region. By 1775, there were 68 sugar plantations on the island. European powers struggled for control over the Caribbean—St. Kitts was shared between Britain and France for nearly a century—and pirates prowled the seas.

Slavery was abolished in the British colonies in 1834, prompting the decline of the sugar cane business, although the last factory was closed as recently as 2005. St. Kitts & Nevis became independent from Britain in 1983, and while the islands remain part of the Commonwealth, they have their own government and prime minister. Tourism has replaced sugar cultivation as a source of income. And while you’ll still see elements of “British-ness” in the Georgian architecture of Basseterre, the passion for cricket, and driving on the left, the islands very much have their own character. Locals are warm and friendly, and you’ll hear many references to “limin’”—the art of hanging out with friends, chatting, and doing very little.

St Kitts & Nevis Cruise Port Facilities & Location

Cruises to St. Kitts pull into bright and colorful Port Zante, which leads straight to downtown Basseterre. Purpose-built for cruise ships, Port Zante encompasses 30 acres of shops, bars, restaurants, pedestrianized walkways, and the cruise terminal itself. You’ll find everything you need here, from tourist information to restrooms, and free Wi-Fi at some of the bars.

Transportation in St. Kitts

The main shopping area of Basseterre is located just steps from the pier, in Port Zante. Head further into Basseterre, though, for more authentic purchases, from paintings by Caribbean artists to antique maps and handmade flip flops and purses. Other popular souvenirs to bring home with you from St. Kitts include handmade batik prints, clothing and jewelry, Caribbean dolls, rum, spicy sauces, and locally made arts and crafts.

Shopping in St. Kitts

Local currency & tipping customs.

The official currency of St. Kitts is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC$), pegged to the U.S. Dollar at a rate of EC$2.7 to $1. U.S. dollar bills (not coins) are also accepted at most places. Even if paying with U.S. dollars, change is usually given in the Eastern Caribbean dollar. You can find ATMs in Basseterre. Most stores and restaurants take credit cards, but keep some cash handy for buying things in markets or at street stalls. For tipping, check if the service charge is already added to the bill. If not, it is generally expected to leave 10% to 15% of your total bill. For taxis, also expect to tip 10% to 15% of the total fare.

Cruise Port of Call - Basseterre St Kitts

The beautiful Island of St Kitts

Basseterre is the capital city of the two island nation of St Kitts and Nevis, which became independent in 1983. Today it’s the smallest independent nation in the Western Hemisphere.

Basseterre was officially founded in 1625 by French settlers. When you wander around you can see the influences of both modern and colonial English, French and African architectural styles.

Highlights include The Circus, patterned after Piccadilly Circus in London (The green Berkeley Memorial is set in the middle of the Circus. ), St George’s Anglican Church , Immaculate Conception Co-Cathedral Catholic Church and Independence Square which was formerly the site of a slave market.

Cruise ships dock at Port Zante in Basseterre Bay, an easy walk from the historic city of Basseterre.

There a lot of taxi drivers offering tours. Be aware, they can be a little pushy. There are also several locals with monkeys to get tourist to pay to have pictures with the monkeys.

Basseterre Port in Saint Kits

There is lots to see when you get right off the ship, but before reaching the old town everyone has to pass through the very nice and modern shopping area just outside Port Zante.

Port Zante has over 60 shops offering good deals on watches, fine jewelry, diamonds, and colored gemstones. Good for any duty free purchases or souvenirs.

The first building behind the port main shopping area is the Georgian-style Treasury Building. It houses the National Museum of St Kitts and is the gateway to historic Basseterre.

The heart of Basseterre is Independence Square, the former slave market, located 4 blocks north of the cruise terminal. It was named once Pall Mall square but was renamed Independence square in 1983 when St Kits achieved political independence.

Independence Square

Just east stands the towering gray stone Immaculate Conception Co-Cathedral, dating to 1928. This cathedral is the culmination of the quest for a permanent home for Catholics after two centuries of persecution. It’s Very pretty and well kept. There is not an entry fee but the church does accept donations.

Immaculate Conception Co-Cathedral

In my opinion the most beautiful is however the St George’s Anglican Church. With it’s tall clock tower, it is easy to locate. The church is located on Cayon Street, which is a few blocks to the north. At the entrance there is a stairway going to the top of the clock tower.

St George's Anglican Church

When you reach the top, you will be rewarded with the best views of Basseterre. The church has been destroyed and rebuilt four times since its original construction.

Most streets lead to The Circus roundabout in central Basseterre. In the center stands the Berkeley Memorial, a quirky combination of drinking fountain and clock tower.

The Island of St Kitts

The island is very pretty and the locals are rather nice. If you get a chance, a nice day trip is going to Brimstone Hill Fort and Romney manor. Beach enthusiasts will love either Cockleshell Beach or the exotic black-and-gold sand of South Friar’s Beach.

About halfway to the beach is popular Timothy Hill, from this vintage point you have a wonderful view of the golden sandy Atlantic beaches and the tranquil Caribbean Sea. The cloud-capped Mount Nevis is an awe-inspiring backdrop.

Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park

Known as the “Gibraltar of the West Indies”. The fortress, nowadays an UNESCO World Heritage Site, protected the British interests in this part of the Caribbean during the 18th and 19th centuries. The British military structure is one of the best preserved fortifications in the Americas.

The complex holds aslo the Caribelle Batik, where you can watch artisans hand-printing Sea Island cotton into beautiful batik fabrics.

St Kitts is a lovely typical Caribbean island. Visited the island a few times now, and each time I enjoyed my time there.

Cruise Port Terminal - St. Kitts & Nevis

Shore Excursions in St. Kitts & Nevis:

Ride the st. kitts scenic railway.

For our cruise in 2017, we made sure that we booked the St. Kitts Scenic Railway tour (aka “the Sugar Train”). The train tracks were originally built in the early 1900s to deliver sugar cane from plantations to the mill. Later the tracks were adapted into a tourist railway. You can read more about it here.

We actually booked the Rail and Sail tour that included a catamaran in hopes of seeing dolphins. Sadly there were no dolphins. But we had a nice hour and a half long catamaran ride to the southwest corner of the island where we had a great view of the Brimstone Hill Fort. Then we took a short bus ride to the train boarding area.

It’s not a train station. It’s just a circle of track where the train pulls up and passengers board. The train ride covers 18 miles and the train moves pretty slowly, so the whole ride took a couple of hours. We traveled within sight of the coast for most of the trip and saw lots of countryside and countless sugar plantation smokestacks. I was also really hoping to see a monkey, but they said the train noise scares them away. Rum punch and daiquiris are served on the train and a group of singers sing to passengers.

All in all, I’m glad that I got to ride the train, but it was a bit slow at times. I’d recommend it for people who are interested in the history of St. Kitts or who want a relaxing excursion.

Note: you may end up doing the tour in reverse.

St. Kitts Scenic Railway - Shore Excursion St. Kitts Cruise Port

Catamaran Fan-ta-Sea & Nevis Beach Break

On another cruise that also stopped in St. Kitts, we decided to do a Carnival cruise excursion on the catamaran Fan-Ta-Sea. It was my parents first cruise and I really wanted them to get to experience the Caribbean with a catamaran and snorkel trip. And I thought St. Kitts would be a good island for it because I thought the scenic hilly terrain would be best seen from a boat offshore. This trip also allowed us to visit the beach in Nevis, so we crossed two islands off of our trip.

Overall, the catamaran ride was nice. The boat was large and clean. The first place where we stopped to snorkel was nice. The water was clear and there were lots of fish. But the highlight was definitely seeing the little monkeys on the hillside when our boat pulled up and parked. Unfortunately, they were pretty far away and I didn’t get a good picture.

Snorkeling by the Catamaran Fan-ta-sea in St. Kitts Cruise Port Shore Excursion

After getting back on the boat, the catamaran made the journey back to the port. This is where I started to get a little bit bored, although the rum punch was flowing so if you’re the drinking type, then you’d probably enjoy it. My main complaint is that the journey from Nevis back to St. Kitts is a pretty straight path and I felt like the scenery didn’t really change. Not the Fan-ta-sea’s fault, and I will say it was a nice, calm boat ride.

View of St. Kitts from the Catamaran Fan-ta-Sea on St. Kitts Shore Excursion

Overall impression – No regrets since we wanted to catamaran at some point on our cruise. But my opinion is that all catamaran trips are relatively similar throughout the Caribbean, meaning you snorkel, beach, and drink rum punch. I personally would wait and take a catamaran ride on another island as the one from St. Kitts is overpriced and nothing special.

Additional Note – it’s really normal for excursion operators to ask for tips. They generally stand up towards the end of the journey and make a small pitch for tips and look extremely uncomfortable doing so. I completely get it. These people live in very poor conditions and I think all cruise ship passengers should tip for the service they offer, especially when the crew goes out of their way to provide good customer service. That being said, the Fan-ta-Sea crew takes it to a whole other level. We witnessed some of the crew calling out customers and telling them that they can afford to tip more than they did. It made me uncomfortable.

Next time I visit St. Kitts:

  • Wake up early & try to see the dolphins as the cruise ship arrives
  • Climb to the top of Brimstone Hill Fort
  • Visit Cockleshell Beach

Transportation on St. Kitts:

Some fellow cruisers took taxis from port to the beaches. I would recommend trying that or doing a different excursion for our next trip.

Lodging on St. Kitts:

None seen. Recommend visiting by cruise ship.

Restaurants/ Meals & Drinks in St. Kitts:

We ate a snack at an unimpressive restaurant in the cruise ship terminal and also didn’t see any others that appealed to me. I would not recommend it and instead suggest shopping quickly and just getting back on the boat.

Tips/ Things to Know before visiting St. Kitts:

  • Dolphins can be seen in St. Kitts if you approach the cruise port from the West. If you’re the early morning type, I recommend getting up early to see them. My parents were up and thought they were pretty awesome. The catamaran from Nevis approaches from the East, so no dolphins were seen.

My Time Spent on the Island of St. Kitts:

  • 1 day cruise port in February 2016, on the Carnival Breeze
  • 1 day cruise port in January 2017, on the Royal Caribbean Jewel of the Seas

Charlestown Nevis & St. Kitts

Last updated on June 6th, 2023 at 02:34 pm

Experience the best of both worlds in Charlestown, where the tranquil charm of Nevis meets the vibrant energy of St. Kitts. Discover the historic plantations, lounge on pristine beaches, or hike to the summit of Nevis Peak for panoramic views. Indulge in the delectable local cuisine and immerse yourself in the warm hospitality of these twin Caribbean gems.

Located on the smaller of the two islands that make up St. Kitts & Nevis, Charlestown Nevis is a quiet haven with lovely beaches and a much smaller tourist crowd. A towering volcano rises from the center of the island, its green slopes covered with lush rainforests. Most cruises stop at its sister island, St. Kitts, so if you’re lucky enough to have a stop in Nevis, chances are you will be the only cruise ship there.

Charlestown has a small population of only 1,500 people. The buildings of the town are unique - due to a history of earthquakes toppling the second floor, the lower floor is built of concrete, while second levels are usually wood.

Check out these excursions in St. Kitts !

East Caribbean Dollar. There are three banks close to the Charlestown Pier. One in each direction; straight inland, left and right. You can’t miss them!

Wireless Internet:

Nevis beaches are known to have Wifi. Pinney’s Beach, in particular, has at least three Wifi hotspots. The Joe Nevis cafe has free Wifi for customers.

English. Many people also speak Saint Kitts Creole.

Where You Dock in Charlestown Nevis & St. Kitts

Cruises anchor offshore and passengers are tendered to the dock in Charlestown. Downtown Charlestown is within walking distance of the tender pier.

Getting Around Charlestown Nevis & St. Kitts

Buses and taxis are the main methods of transportation in Nevis. For a trip North out of Charlestown, the buses wait at the south-west end of D. R. Walwyn Plaza. If your destination is south, you will want the buses waiting at the north side of Memorial Square.

If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your bus driver.

Shopping In Charlestown Nevis & St. Kitts

The Cotton Ginnery Mall is located within walking distance of the tender pier. This restored stone building now houses shops and restaurants including clothing stores, a local craft shop, among others.

Dining In Charlestown Nevis & St. Kitts

Turtle Time Beach Bar & Grill – Pinney’s Beach – Casual atmosphere and great food right on the beach. Turtle Time is one of the most highly recommended restaurants on the island!

Joe Nevis – New Castle – This extremely casual cafe is known for its home-cooked food, free wifi and inexpensive meal options!

Things To Do in Charlestown Nevis & St. Kitts

Botanical Gardens of Nevis – Some of the world’s rarest plant life can be found in these incredible gardens. A combination of water features, artwork and beautiful landscaping makes it the perfect place to relax and enjoy the wonderful weather.

Nevis Peak Hike – The full hike isn’t for the faint of heart and requires hiking boots and likely a guide. There are several hikes through the lower slopes of the volcano that most people can do regardless of physical fitness. Bring a water bottle and leave at least 3-4 hours aside for the full hike.

How Saint Kitts and Nevis is Prioritizing Sustainability

M any travelers are familiar with St. Kitts and Nevis because they once stopped at its port on a multi-country cruise. Yet the dual-island nation is worth getting to know in its own right-particularly its verdant mountains, white-sand beaches, and accessible historic and cultural sites.

Today, the Caribbean nation-technically, the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis-is working hard to become more of a singular destination for travelers. And in doing so, it is prioritizing sustainability in exciting ways.

"As a country that relies heavily on tourism, we must protect our tourism products so that locals and visitors can enjoy them for generations to come," says Marsha Henderson, St. Kitts and Nevis's minister of tourism, civil aviation, and urban development.

In 2013, federation officials launched the first programs to encourage businesses across the islands to establish sustainable practices. Those initiatives led to the country adopting a sustainable development planning framework in 2023 (in conjunction with the United Nations) with a focus on policies with ecological, educational, cultural, and financial objectives. St. Kitts and Nevis now aims to become the first Sustainable Island State -meaning that it will prioritize economic and social development with a lasting commitment to environmental sustainability.

Residents are starting to see increased investments into renewable energy, eco-friendly infrastructure, and sustainable business practices. Travelers are also seeing changes, such as increased options for green hotel stays and excursions across the islands.

For example, St. Kitts has encouraged rewilding of former sugar plantations. The government ended commercial production of sugar in 2005 to instead focus its resources on tourism. "Naturally, nature started taking over and reclaimed much of the sugar lands closest to the rainforest. As a result, the rainforest has expanded," says Henderson. Notably, St. Kitts and Nevis's central mountain rainforests are protected from development under legislation dating to 1904.

St. Kitts and Nevis's naturally steep topography is ideal for cultivation of the rainforest, which continues to expand, reclaiming previously abandoned sugarcane fields. "We now seek to increase economic sustainability by creating closer links between tourism and agriculture," Henderson says, as well as "the creative economy and souvenir manufacturing, thus reducing the leakage of foreign exchange and expanding the wealth of tourism in the local communities within the federation."

Similarly, some hotels across the country are adopting green energy and waste reduction practices. Sunset Reef Resort , a luxury boutique stay, is a great example of this. The resort incorporated sustainability into its infrastructure since its inception. According to Chris Crane, the property's chief operating officer, it has property-wide water filtration and reverse-osmosis drinking water systems in each guest room. It also eliminated plastic bottles and straws, planted native flora, and installed a geothermal air-conditioning system.

Crane credits the government and residents for supporting country-wide sustainability initiatives. "St. Kitts is a stunning Caribbean treasure," he says. "Locals are committed to preserving its beauty while recognizing the need for ongoing progress and infrastructure development to stimulate growth and attract tourists." To that end, the government is now offering incentives to resorts that integrate renewable energy practices into new and continued property renovations.

"What is often overlooked is that sustainability is not just environmentally responsible, but a sound business strategy," says Crane, "yielding a higher return on investment than traditional approaches."

This is why, in part, seven tourism-related businesses in St. Kitts and Nevis are working with the St. Kitts Sustainable Destination Council (SDC), a nonprofit advisory group of government and private-sector representatives formed to promote sustainable destination management. The SDC has also trained more than 100 residents as "Destination Guardians" through workshops about tourism-related waste reduction and community development. Guardians visit popular tourist sites to identify challenges while developing responsible recovery plans.

The SDC has worked to preserve Kittian culture through sustainable activities for tourists. By partnering with Leonard Stapleton, a local historian, the SDC has launched a series of workshops focused on increasing awareness and appreciation of St. Kitts's history and cultural traditions.

Tourism professionals visiting the island can also participate in these workshops, where they will be immersed in different aspects of St. Kitts and Nevis's local heritage. They will be able to tour sites around the islands, including the capital city of Basseterre, to learn about the country's colonial-era architecture, hear examples of traditional music, watch folkloric dances, and understand the types of games that children play.

Additionally, the federation has been working on longer-term investments into renewables to benefit residents and visitors alike. It has started a campaign to convert streetlights and lighting fixtures at sports facilities away from traditional, energy-consuming lighting to LED, reducing power consumption. And this year, the parliament voted to ban the use of single-use plastics. By the end of 2024, the federation will place bans on Styrofoam food containers, plastic straws, single-use plastic cups, plastic plates, and plastic utensils. The sale and distribution of plastic bags within the country will be banned by March 2025.

"Some restaurants on the island have already implemented the ban on single-use plastics," Henderson says, "utilizing Mason jars, paper straws, biodegradable takeaway containers, and banana leaves as plates."

Put together, she says, these initiatives are still in the infancy stages, but have already shown encouraging results: "This ongoing process highlights the effectiveness of long-term conservation efforts and the government's continued commitment to increased protection of these natural resources."

Dual-island nation St. Kitts and Nevis is making sustainability a top priority.

This Caribbean Cruise Port Just Set a New Record

One of the fastest-growing cruise ports in the Caribbean just set another record.

Thanks to recent calls by Celebrity Beyond and Norwegian Sky, the Antigua Cruise Port just set an all-time passenger record, with more than 500,000 passengers since the beginning of 2024.

That includes a total of 255 ships calls — 42 more than this time last year, and more than 105,281 passengers above the first half of 2023.

The elevated numbers “extremely exciting for us,” Cynthia Jacobs Browne, officer-in-charge at the Antigua Cruise Port, said in a statement provided to Caribbean Journal.

“We are on track for a record-breaking year, and we could not be prouder of our team and our success at this point,” Browne said.

Looking ahead to the summer, bookings are also up she said.

What’s next?

“We are on course to outperform last year’s numbers,” she said.
