Hi, we have select fare, and it includes the coach transfer from Glasgow to Southampton. Does anyone know where the coach leaves from in Glasgow, approx what time and whether the journey is as bad as i think it might be 🤔

Hi, it leaves from Buchanan Street Bus Station, the far side, at North Hanover Street, at 3.30am. First stop is Carlisle to pick up then stop at Tebay for breakfast about 6am. It is a long journey, but depending on the time of year, probably worth doing to avoid any weather problems preventing flights or trains heading south in the few days before. There was no power or Wi-fi on the coach which surprised me, particularly for that length of journey.

There was a recent discussion on this subject:

We done the journey from Carlisle last March, it was absolutely perfect. We were picked up at 6am, and there were ample stops for breakfast etc. Comfort breaks and other pick ups too. My parents travelled with us, mum walks with a stick and she managed journey fine too. They are luxury coaches so nothing to worry about. My brother also done the journey from Carlisle with 2 kids aged 9 and 13 in October with no problems, he too was concerned aboug it but they have rebooked for October this year as it is quite a nice part of holiday to relax and watch the world go by!

We have travelled by coach numerous times. While I would say that Eavesway, whom we paid for, were better coaches than those used by P and O, the Cruise Connect coaches by Ellison have always been ok. It is an early start but most folk snooze until the first stop. A tip for your first stop is to take a sandwich or snack  with you as often there is very little open. Plenty of comfort breaks and time to stretch your legs.

Looks as though Eavesway may not be running in 2020 which is disappointing especially as the future of air travel is in doubt. Have always used Eavesway but may have to swop to the opposition for our 2020 cruises unless things change

I dislike coach travel.... Having said that we have used it several times as it has been the least worse option (apologies to my English teacher). The main problem us my height - so I accept the problem is mine. Our coach journeys usually pick up around 6:00am. The journey south is good because you are buoyed up by excitement for your coming holiday. The hard bit is coming back which does seem a bit long. (Having said that, standing for a couple of hours in Southampton railway station until your booked train-‘you must leave enough time in case the ship is late docking’ & ‘I’m not paying that for an open return’ arrives is pretty demoralising. I do believe that CPS & a cheap hotel the night before is the best option but it is not always feasible.)

Oh one last point; after week(s) of pampering your eyes will water as you reach the till with your food at the first services station.

Have a great trip

Best wishes,

I love this comment, so true! We often eat out ashore in Spain and Italy, e.g. in Civitavecchia our family had starters, 5 pizzas, desserts, half a litre of beer, a litre of wine and 2 coca-colas for €59. Then we stop at the services on the way home and spend £30+ for sandwiches, crisps and drinks.

If coach travel is included in your cruise fare as part of P&O Cruises Select Fare, then all you have to do is let P&O Cruises or your travel agent know where you would like to join the coach.

Even if coach travel isn’t included, you can usually add it on for an extra charge, as long as there is space on the coach for you.

The service is called Cruise Connect and it is provided by Intercruises. Visit the Intercruises website to book online or over the phone.

Pick Up Points Aren’t Guaranteed

This page lists all of the possible pickup points, but not every one will be available on every cruise. If you leave it too late to book, there may be no spaces left from your chosen departure point.

In this case, an alternative would be to take the Megabus or National Express .

You may also want to consider a train to Southampton or even a flight, depending on where you live. The easiest way to compare all travel options is to use a comparison site like Omio . This doesn’t include Cruise Connect coaches, but it does have some other options for you to consider.

My Experience

P&O Cruises Cruise Connect coaches are generally very good. The coaches are usually modern and well-equipped with clean toilets and there are sometimes movies shown on the TV.

In my experience, the drivers vary, with some being incredibly friendly and chatty, and some being completely miserable and unhelpful.

The great thing about Cruise Connect coach transfers is that they often go straight to the cruise port with no stops. Of course, the route depends on how many people want to travel from each pick-up point.

And because this is P&O Cruises’ official coach transfer service, you never have to worry about missing your ship. If there’s a delay due to traffic, breakdown or any other reason, you can relax knowing that the ship will wait for you.

Hey say you had a large group all going to southhampton. Say in exceess of 40 passengers, do you think Cruise connect would negotiate on a starting point for the coach based on the majority of these passengers all coming from the same place/town?

It’s worth giving them a call to ask the question.

Hi there Jenni, We have booked a Cruise Connect coach to take us down from Birmingham Airport to Southampton on the Caribbean Transatlantic Cruise on the Britannia. Do you know what time the coaches usually pick up from the Departure points and how long it normally take to get down to Southampton?

Hi Barbara. I would estimate that the pick up from Birmngham would be approx 9am, maybe 9.30am. Cruise Connect will be able to give you the exact time. The coach will probably only stop once for a quick break, and you should be in Southampton by around 2pm, depending on traffic. I hope that helps. Jenni

Has anyone travelled by train to Southampton from Glasgow to catch a cruise ?

Booked on Sky Princess next March and would like to travel by train and not fly

Haven't done Southampton to Glasgow, but in 2017, we did Southampton to Leuchars (St Andrews). It required a change in Birmingham, which was interesting, as we had to change platforms and only had about 10 - 15 minutes.

No regrets, longer than flying, but more comfortable.

jocap

We take a train from the Lake District, which has started in Glasgow, and change either at Birmingham or Wolverhampton- Wolves is better because the Southampton train leaves from either the same, or next platform.

The same returning- so far we've never missed the 08 15 north out of S'ton,  and change onto the Glasgow train at Wolverhampton- usually a 20 min break, which is handy to nip to the buffet to buy a coffee. ( We need it, as our next change is at Lancaster to catch the world's slowest train up the Cumbrian coast- no buffet and stopping at every village. 😮  ).

I haven't done this journey but I would def try National Rail Enquiries' search engine. March 2022 is too far ahead to get a quote but it will give an idea of cost, journey times and changes at Lancaster and Wolves. I picked 2 random Sundays, leaving Glasgow at 09:34 and arr at Southampton 16:42. The return trip also takes about 7 hours leaving Southampton at say, 14:20. £184 return. Here's the link :-

https://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/planjourney/search#

Another option worth considering is National Express coaches. They're closed down at the moment due to Covid but their search engine will quote for say May. The journey is 12 hours but the cost is £107 return. The £77 you save, could pay for a nice B&B at Southampton on the day before? Not that dissimilar but we are looking at Newcastle to Southampton options.

The train is a pain. Either change in London or Brum ... anywhere between 6 and 8 hours .... costings are circa £175 single, pp ... plus an arm and a leg taking a taxi across London to change stations. Mr Google says take the tube but Mr Google hasn’t got suitcases 😁

LoganAir ... direct flight ... 75mins ... flexible ticket with extra baggage allowance  .. £77pp.

Flying is not for everyone but that saving is paying for a pre-cruise hotel.

Aulanis

Now is probably not the time to be looking as trains are running

short of seats  so prices have doubled? trebled?  and maybe not

running at times you need.

Having said that we live in preston and have twice used avanti to

Birmingham and Crosscountry  Birmingham to Southampton.

I would want to go the day before sailing and stay over.

Lots of hotels in Southampton but suggest you book  a fully cancelable

stay  early as the prices go up on cruise days.  Think 3/4 ships on

the same day.

The train worked pretty well, they had advance tickets on all legs and

wait in Birmingham was around 30 mins (on same platform)

From Glasgow  an alternate plan might be to get down to

Birmingham , stay one night then early start next day to Southampton.

We are booked on a cruise in August - dont think it will go but

have set up the hotel. Hadnt looked at trains - prices now are

frightening- should be better for you by March

Last year we had booked Explorer 2 Iceland/Norway in August. First casualty was Flybe and the credit card came to the rescue. Like you we opted for Loganair and the price was reasonable, £110 return Exeter to Newcastle, direct flight for ! hour 15 mins. Exeter parking £45 for 2 weeks.

When Loganair cancelled, they refunded pretty quick, no quibble. I will use them again.

We are going in June 2022 on the Queen Mary and I was hoping that Eavesway would take us from Newcastle to Southampton.  We went by train last time and it was ok, apart from the London change over, however it would be lovely to get to Southampton and just get on a smashing Eavesway coach to go home.  Someone told me that Eavesway don't operate for Cunard any more.  I really do think there is a gap in the market here, all these people in the north trying to get to Southampton!

That’s the issue ... we live north of Watford and therefore don’t really count 😂

I failed Maths as well but passed Geography - where's Watford?

Yes you do. Inter cruises provide coach transfers.

As far as I know, Eavesway still run coaches to Southampton... we used one after Inter cruises took over the contract from Cunard/P&O etc, although that was down the west coast. If you google them, they have booking forms on line- I  don't know if Newcastle is mentioned, but they're offering cruise coaches TO Newcastle for Fred O and Marella, so are probably doing the Edinburgh/N/C route to Southampton.

Well worth adding Skyscanner to faves (if you haven't already done so). At the moment, Loganair run this route, so £172 pp return is a bit pricey. However, once 'normality' returns  🤐  and BA return to compete, you may find prices come down :-

A great website for travel between any two places anywhere in the UK (or the world) is  https://rome2rio.com    they give every option of travel between any two points.

I suggest you also look at trainline.com for tickets on the trains as booking ahead is a good money saver.

I checked at the weekend and the cost from Leeds/Bradford/Barnsley was £50 per person each way. Due to COVID there were reduced pick ups. We are sailing with Celebrity and they go to the City terminal. Inter cruises do not deal with Celebrity.

Something to bear in mind here is Saturday and Sundays are popular days for rail engineering works although these are usually planned well in advance and information can be found on the rail websites.

On 2/28/2021 at 8:30 AM, MBP&O2/O said: Not that dissimilar but we are looking at Newcastle to Southampton options. The train is a pain. Either change in London or Brum ... anywhere between 6 and 8 hours .... costings are circa £175 single, pp ... plus an arm and a leg taking a taxi across London to change stations. Mr Google says take the tube but Mr Google hasn’t got suitcases 😁   LoganAir ... direct flight ... 75mins ... flexible ticket with extra baggage allowance  .. £77pp.   Flying is not for everyone but that saving is paying for a pre-cruise hotel.

I always get the train down, and have never paid anywhere near £175 for a single, and thats in 1st.  I always book early through LNER.  Also, if you are travelling with someone else, well worth buying a 2together card, as it gives you a third off the fare, making it even cheaper.

Just checked, and my next trip is in August, and for 2 returns going 1st, I paid £154.40 to London, and the fare from London to Southampton can be had from £10 if you get the slower train.

We looked at the train for going to Southampton in July but too many changes with luggage, and coming home on a Sunday could be a nightmare with engineering works. We have decided to drive down.

The schedules must have changed since we did Southampton to Leuchars. We only changed once in Birmingham, but it certainly wasn't easy making the change in about 15 mins with luggage.

When I left the ships in Southampton, I always hired a car and drove up - way faster than the train, but that was long before the days of photo radar.

We usually travel to Southampton by train.Once we used The Baggage Handling company to pick up our luggage from home (next time you see it its on the ship) and that worked quite well.Quite expensive but less stressful than having to find somewhere to put luggage etc

My wife and I have travelled from Edinburgh or Glasgow to Southampton quite a few times by  train, its always our preferred way. Change at Wolverhampton however if you miss the connection then you have to wait an hour for the next one. The first time we did it we travelled on the same day and because of delays we were the last 2 on the ship, so always travel the day before and stay overnight in a hotel.

In June 2016 we drove to Southampton, it took about 4 hours+ inc one stop. At the time, I resolved to give the train a go. The train time including changes is about 4 hrs 30min. Just done a dummy run on the GWR site and found they do an off-peak return for about £160 for 2 passengers, arriving midday on the outbound section.

CPS parking plus petrol is a tad more than this, so I'm very tempted to let the 'train take the strain' on our next booked Southampton cruise.

Things to do in Southampton

Famously, Southampton is the port the Titanic sailed out from, and you’ll find a range of maritime-themed things to do during your stay. And it’s not just all about ships and the sea – inhabited since the Stone Age, the city has plenty to do.

Where to eat

Hoxton Bakehouse

You’ll find the Hoxton Bakehouse close to Southampton Docks, serving up warm loaves of hand-leavened bread and other delicious pastries. They also offer classes on how to make your own sourdough from scratch.

It’s A Pizza Thing

Pizza is one of the world’s favourite foods – and Southampton’s It’s A Pizza Thing demonstrates exactly why. This mobile food truck is a big favourite with locals and offers hand stretched artisan pizzas, all cooked inside their wood fired oven. Check their Facebook page to see where the food truck will be set up next.

If you’re still after some lovely Italian food but don’t fancy a pizza, Ennio’s is where you’ll want to head to. With boutique hotel rooms above the restaurant, it’s known in Southampton as a place to go out for a special meal. They do also offer a more affordable lunchtime menu.

Where to drink

Whether you’re looking to sink a pint…

Southampton’s publicans are barkeeps are partial to stocking the odd pint of craft ale. Situated inside a former bank, the aptly named Overdraft Craft Ale Bar offers a wide range of rotating brews on tap, many of which are also vegan. BrewDog also has a branch in Southampton, well worth a visit. If chains aren’t your thing, pay a visit to local brewery Tap It for a range of different IPAs at their taproom.

…or sip on a cocktail instead

In 2012 it was announced that Stephen Fry and Ian McKellen would pay the licensing fees for The Hobbit pub to stay open in Southampton without needing a name change after being open for over 20 years. So pop in for a Gimli (not a gimlet – each of the drinks are named after Tolkein characters) and admire the themed décor. If you don’t need a theme to be able to enjoy a tipple, book a slot at the Bring & Mix cocktail bar – bring your own bottles and their expert mixologists will create bespoke drinks just for you.

Going ‘out out’

As well as being the birthplace of none other than Craig David, Southampton has some great nightlife. Check out student favourite, the Orange Rooms for a big night on the town.

Where to shop

Oxford Street

London isn’t the only British city with a busy shopping district on Oxford Street. Southampton has its own too, and it is home to a diverse array of boutiques and bars. The city centre is also home to many gift shops with a nautical theme, as well as independent retailers selling unique items.

Beatnik Emporium

If vintage is what floats your boat, you’ll enjoy picking out retro fashion finds at Beatnik Emporium (to buy or, if you’re planning a return trip, rent). The store also celebrates events such as World Record Store Day, and partners with local 70s-styled nightclub Orange Rooms.

Robin’s Nest

Another emporium in the city, this warehouse store stocks a vast treasure trove of furniture, fabrics and other bric-a-brac. Robin’s Nest also has a coffee shop serving up great food.

Top tourist attractions

Tudor House

Southampton’s first museum was founded in 1912 and covers over 800 years of history. Located in the Old Town, renovations to Tudor House were finished in 2011 to include new displays and facilities. The Grade I listed building remains one of the best examples of Norman architecture in England and also has a traditional knot garden.

SeaCity Museum

Visit the city centre’s SeaCity Museum to explore the story of the people of the city, their fascinating history and connections with the Titanic. Suitable for all the family, the interactive museum lets you explore Southampton’s proud, sea-faring history.

Mayflower Theatre

Visit this Grade II listed theatre for a range of different performances year-round including shows on tour from London’s West End.

Things to do for kids

Solent Sky Museum

This museum documents the history of aviation, with a focus on the local Supermarine aircraft company, which designed and manufactured the Spitfire fighter plane.

Itchen Valley Country Park

Itchen Valley Country Park is an idyllic 400-acre plot in the heart of the city. Filled with water meadows, spectacular flowers and walking trails, the Park is home to a treasure trove of wildlife, and thanks to an excellent café, is a great way to spend the day while taking in beautiful, scenic, county-wide views.

Southampton in one day

One reason Southampton is such a popular student city could be because of its relatively small size. There’s still a ton of stuff to do, and with so many attractions dotted around, city centre walks are a great way to take in everything on offer. Starting throughout the day from the city centre’s high street, experienced guides will introduce you to the city’s many sights and secrets, so keep your camera nearby.

Learn more about the Titanic

Make Southampton’s maritime history the focus of your day, with the Titantic trail walk. The Titanic sailed from Southampton on April 10, 1912. More than 500 Southampton families lost a member when the ship sank. Visit the SeaCity Museum for their Titanic Story exhibition, and if you have time after, the Southampton Art Gallery (with free entry) is also just around the corner.

Walk the walls

The Bargate and town walls still remain around the Old Town, constructed back in Norman times. Well-preserved, the wall is the third longest stretch of medieval town walling in Britain. And if you’re peckish for food, pop into local Boulangerie Victor Hugo for fresh-baked croissants.

Hidden gems

Burlsedon Brickworks

The last steam-powered brickworks in the UK is open to the public to learn about the history of industrial Britain. The Victorian-built brickworks only stopped production in 1974.

Bedford Place

An alternative to the city centre, Bedford Place is filled with independent shops and restaurants.

The area’s old-fashioned aesthetic is kept intact as much as possible, and you’ll be able to find fashion and food alongside other staples such as a pharmacy.
